PROGRAM NOTE

Lively, mischievous, and with an unmistakable groove, “To Pull Out All the Stops” is the fourth movement of Snapshots; freshly re-orchestrated

from the original saxophone quartet scoring in a roller-coaster of a production. Written to cover the far reaches of the saxophone quartet’s ability

and now “band-ified,” this energetic, high-speed tour de force is packed with solos, extended techniques, meter changes, and so much more. Its

constant drive, jazzy interjections, and sheer volume make it at once gleefully fun, downright dirty, and an all-around showstopper.

To perform this piece, ensembles will truly need to pull out all the stops.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

• There are numerous extremely fast runs scattered throughout the piece. These are intended to essentially be schmears of energetic motion, and

while ideal, technical perfection is not needed for these fragments.

• Anything marked “sfz bring out” (found primarily in auxiliary percussion) needs to cut through the rest of the ensemble.

• Soprano Sax trills in measure 24. This will need to start slow and gradually speed up as it progresses.

• The orchestration is empty for the saxophone feature in measures 81 to 83. This is a reference to the original saxophone quartet version of the

piece, and the quartet is highly encouraged to stand up. This section should be as loud, full, and “honk-y” as the saxophones can manage. The fall

should last until the downbeat of measure 84 and begin on beat 6 of measure 83.

• Bassoon and Euphonium have trills in measure 84. These will need to start slow and gradually speed up as they progress.

• Please make a note of the few spots throughout the piece where accents are unexpectedly shifted over by one beat (i.e., measures 57 and 89).

• F Horn 1 and Soprano Sax have trills in measures 99 to 100. Besides being loud, these will need to start slow and gradually speed up as they

progress.

• On the last note, the saxophones and f horns need to arrive as loud as possible since they provide the harmony.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Franklin D. Hansen (b. 2002) is a composer whose work has been described by Eric Ewazen as “beautifully orchestrated” with “lovely, wistful melodies,”

and imbued with “virtuosity and [a] terrific sparkle.” His voice remains distinctive across mediums, often featuring chromatic inflections and

a signature whimsical energy. His music has been performed and/or recorded by groups such as the Eastern Wind Symphony, Momenta Quartet,

University of Kentucky Faculty Brass Quintet, Rutgers Saxophone Quartet, Grand Ledge High School Wind Symphony, and the East Brunswick

High School Wind Ensemble.

Franklin is currently pursuing a dual degree in Music Education and Composition at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, where he

studies with Dr. Amanda Harberg.
