feature — 1 When someone asked recently, 'What is confirmation?' I realised that many things that go on inside churches must be a complete mystery to a large number of people, especially nowadays as religious education in our schools today cover so many different faiths — and often none — writes Bob Peters. It also made me realise that some explanation is needed for the advert about 'being confirmed in the Church of England' that first appeared in our last issue. Here is how the Church of England explains it ... 'Confirmation is a special church service in which a person confirms the promises that were made when they were baptised. If you were baptised at a christening when you were a child, your parents and godparents made these promises on your behalf. As a young person or adult, you may be ready to affirm these promises for yourself and commit your life to following Jesus Christ. At a confirmation service, you make these promises for yourself. Your friends and family as well as the local Christian community will be there to promise to support and pray for you. A bishop will place his, or her, hands on your head and ask God’s Holy Spirit to give you the strength and commitment to live God’s way for the rest of your life. Being confirmed is a choice not a requirement — the Church of England doesn’t have a formal membership in that sense — everyone is welcome to come along to church, worship and be a part of the church community. Being confirmed is simply a sign of your commitment and involvement. Some leadership roles and being ordained as a minister do require confirmation.' CLASSES The act of confirmation dates back to New Testament times when the followers of Jesus were baptised by his disciples after promising to lead their life according to the teaching of Jesus. As Christianity spread the role was taken on by the bishops — our illustration top right is from a German woodcarving made in 1679. Early in the history of the Church it became common for infants to be baptised. The earliest mention of infant baptism is thought to be in an African church by Father Tertullian, (AD 160 - 220). At St Andrew's, our next confirmation service will be held on Sunday 20 November at 10.30am when the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft will be officiating. Candidates who have not previously been baptised will be baptised during the service, and then all candidates will renew their baptismal vows. This involves agreeing to the rejection of the devil, repenting sin and accepting Christ as your Saviour. All this will be explained during a series of 'classes' starting in September, after which you will be in a position to decide if you would like to be confirmed. Remember, it is a choice, not a requirement to worship in St Andrew's, or any other Church of England Church. For young people, aged 10-18 years, the classes will be led by Westy on Monday evenings beginning on 12 September, and for adults, Rev Kate will be holding them on a Tuesday evening from 13 September.
