welcoming the exhibitors and visitors to last month’s 

Midsummer Fair. It was wonderful to see so many happy 

shoppers supporting all the small businesses who had made 

their stands look so very beautiful. If you came to Hole 

Park, I hope you were able to take advantage of a stroll 

around the beautiful grounds, which were open exclusively 

to Midsummer Fair visitors for the duration of the show. 

We have two very different properties for you to explore

charm and the other with a decidedly retro theme – both 

created by talented women with buckets of creativity.

On the subject of colour, it’s all about cheery

In the kitchen, Sophie Crowther took a break from 

packing for a trip to Italy – where she’s taken up a job as a 

chef – to squeeze in a food shoot that showcases her love of

How lucky were we to have 

three uninterrupted days of 

good weather for this year’s 

Wealden Times Midsummer Fair. 

Set over three days at the magnificent 

Hole Park in Rolvenden, Kent, the 

event is the highlight of our summer 

shopping calendar each June. 

We welcomed exhibitors from all 

over the UK and the continent who 

showed off their beautiful wares to 

visitors keen to explore the stands 

that spilled out of the tents and down towards our food and seating area. 

Visitors were expertly entertained with a musical programme that included 

Dulwich Prep Cranbrook, Ashford School and Sutton Valence School 

alongside Cranbrook Town Band and The Rhythm of Life Choir. 

Our stall holders really did create a visual feast this year, and it was almost 

impossible to pick the winner of our Best Stand competition. In the end 

it went to the wonderful Candle Wise (pictured left), whose stand not only 

looked gorgeous, but smelled divine, too. It was a well-deserved win for 

the company, who create small batch, sustainable, handmade candles. 

The entire fair and magazine team would like to say a massive thank 

you to everyone who supported our Midsummer Fair. If you didn’t 

manage to make it back round to your favourite exhibitor in time, or are

enormous central unit and a lovely white Aga. The units are painted 

in Farrow & Ball De Nimes. At the other end of the room, in the 

dining area, the ceiling soars up to the rafters over the dining table 

I’m not sure why this is, but country dwellers seem to use the 

back, or side entrances, to their homes rather than the front 

door – and today is no exception, except that this has become 

the main door, so the first impression of Liz Cruttenden’s large 

17th century farmhouse is disarmingly unimposing. A modest 

path leads from the drive down through a box-edged parterre, 

artfully blended into the house and prettified with topiary. 

An esteemed gardener, the late Antoinette Toynbee, lived here 

before Liz and her family. Antoinette had a close association 

with the visionary and eccentric Christopher Lloyd of Great 

Dixter, modelling her planting here in the style of the gardens 

there. So here there are yew hedges, parterres, meadows and 

even some topiary sheep – a nod to the house’s past. 

I’m not sure what I’m expecting as the door opens – for some 

reason I’ve imagined a low entrance hall or corridor, some sort 

of ante room to the main house – so I’m unprepared for what 

turns out to be the first of many ‘wows’, as instead of this, we are 

launched straight into the most magnificent kitchen and dining 

area. There’s an enormous central unit that’s big enough to be 

an actual island, an acre of Aga and, at the other end, the ceiling 

soars up to the rafters over the dining table, complete with

a stag’s head on the wall (that the plumber shot). Added to 

all this is the most exquisite pantry, decked out with Cornish 

ware and storybook storage jars of carefully labelled dried 

ingredients. I think I’ve died and gone to kitchen heaven. 

We take our coffee out onto the terrace and as I gaze 

down over a wide circular lawn above more gardens that 

lead out to the meadows and orchards beyond, Liz tells 

me more about the house and its renovation, an adventure 

that she started out on around seven years ago. 

“We were living in central Tunbridge Wells. I loved it so much 

but it was a Peter Pan house,” Liz sighs. “A town house… with 

footballs and children – when we really needed a field and a 

barn… I loved it, sold it – and bought a rattly old farmhouse. 

“The second I walked in through the kitchen door 

here, I could sense a feeling of peace,” she says and it’s 

easy to understand why, as we sit outside in the morning 

sunshine and there are no other houses in view, and the 

only sound is that of birds singing. “I got on instantly with 

Simon Toynbee – in fact he gave me a key before we’d 

even exchanged contracts. I feel it’s my spiritual home.” 

Period houses, even those with listed status, are constantly 

being re-invented to suit the needs of the people who live in 

them and whilst it is important to preserve as much of the

up their children here,” she smiles. “She also said that she remembers the smell of the sitting 

room – and was taken aback that it still smells the same – like a fire’s just gone out.” 

integrity of a historic building as possible, it also needs to be 

a comfortable place to live. Added to this, each incumbent 

leaves a story or two and sometimes the house itself has tales 

to tell, written into the very fabric of the building. All this 

making the process of renovation a fascinating, if sometimes 

rather formidable task. “You can see the husk evolving through 

the 17th century to the old Victorian additions,” says Liz. 

“Most of the house dates from circa 1650, although the listing 

says 13th, when the Huguenots came over from France. It 

was an old wool hall – we’ve even got some framed papers in 

the bedroom. And it’s in a book – Historical Houses of Kent. 

Yarn from sheep became valuable in the new world, so our 

topiary sheep nod back to when this was a sheep farm.”

all the windows, it smells of soot.” The previous owners’ 

grand daughter even came to stay. “She was here for a few 

days to do some photographs for her interior design degree, 

which was all based around the farm.” Liz explains. 

Undaunted by the fact that the house needed some work 

and that it is Grade II listed (off-putting to say the least), Liz, 

who has had previous renovation experience, set to work. 

Oh – and she also had three small children (aged seven, five 

and three) in tow – and had moved everyone, unpacked and 

settled in, all while her husband Ed was away at work. 

She hired in a workforce, including a structural engineer 

and a local blacksmith who could fabricate some of the 

project’s metalwork. I sense that Liz was in her element, 

and that despite the complexity of the task in front 

of her, project management is a skill that she is more 

than able at, frustrating though it can be at times. 

“It took a lot of hard work. There were the logistics – 

collect children from school, get home and then start the 

next job. I needed to be on site from 7.45.” She and the 

builders had a site meeting every morning, when the

day’s jobs were allocated. “It took four different trades just 

to get the windows made,” she laughs. “One to restore the 

Crittall windows, another person doing the lead lights, 

another for the joinery and then someone to fit them.” 

The kitchen extension was built in the 1960s and was 

originally a series of smaller utility rooms. “It was a bit of 

a jigsaw,” Liz explains. “We had a planning consultant and 

luckily the conservation officer understood that I was in 

sympathy with the original building and was doing my best 

for it. I worked with the builders through every stage, so 

she was very happy with all the changes I wanted to make.” 

Not everybody shared her vision though. “One of the best 

quotes came from one of my friends; she said “Oh, it’s got 

a lovely garden!” Simon Toynbee was very nice about it 

though – “oh you clever girl” – he said when he saw it.” 

The farmhouse sits within a wonderful series of gardens, 

separated by hedges, and a useful slope, into different areas, each 

a mini garden on it own. It was originally created by the previous 

owner Antoinette, but Liz has already put her stamp on parts of 

the exterior too. She made a bold decision to put in a terrace just 

outside the kitchen, something that many would have baulked at. 

“There was no terrace here,” she says, “just this huge pergola with 

all sorts of climbers all over it. They were lovely – it was lovely. 

Some of my friends thought I was mad to change it, but you 

couldn’t see the garden from the house. I wanted to see the

view, it just didn’t work, so it had to go.” Now there is a broad 

stretch of paving along this side of the house – and the loveliest 

view out across the garden and to the countryside beyond. 

Antoinette created a level, semi-circular lawn at the top 

of the garden and now the terrace, adorned with large 

pots, rather than light blocking climbing plants, looks out 

across to this space. The rest of the back garden then falls 

quite steeply away, so that the top lawn is framed by the 

canopy of the trees growing on the lower level beyond. 

Like all the best gardens, this one – helped by the slope – has 

areas that can’t be viewed from the house and so you are enticed 

to go down and explore. The lower level is less formal, but also 

manages to incorporate a swimming pool, tennis court and 

mature borders filled with lovely shrubs and seasonal perennials. 

The family lived for six months of the build in a tiny 

cottage – “literally no bigger than one of this house’s bedrooms 

and a bathroom,” she recalls. They moved back in when 

the house was still a building site – “the snug was a builder’s 

yard and the kitchen was all dug up while they replaced the 

drains and propped up with Acrow props. It looked vast.” 

It was during the build that Liz began thinking about 

working in interiors. She asked Shelley Hamblett, a friend 

from her children’s school, if she’d be interested in joining 

forces. “Shelley has renovated a lot of houses,” (see March’s 

issue for a feature on her glorious house in Tunbridge Wells). 

“I did a KLC interior design course through the pandemic 

and business courses prior to setting up the practice,” Liz 

explains. They have called their company Hambleden 

Interiors – a clever and classy mash up of their surnames. 

Liz has kept the farmhouse kitchen in the same place, but 

installed French doors out to the garden, where previously 

there was a line of units along the wall under windows. This, 

together with the vaulted ceiling makes the area very light and 

airy. It’s a perfect space for a huge, sculptural light. Designed 

by contemporary lighting designer Tom Dixon, this is just as 

much of an artwork as it is a functional piece. Floating above 

the light – actually adhered to the ceiling, are some fluffy 

clouds – “rugs from H&M” – that act as useful noise absorbers. 

A curtain track has been put up around the dining room 

walls, as Liz is planning to install a soft divide between the 

kitchen and dining, so that when they have dinner parties, 

the preparation and cooking is separated off. “It’s great having 

a big family kitchen, but not when you want to shut off all 

the kitchen bit and make a more intimate space.” She has 

also made sure that the curtains are a neutral backdrop and 

not the focal point, as the garden is the feature here.

The colour scheme of the kitchen and pantry is blue, 

white and cream – possibly inspired by the Cornish 

ware in the pantry, the units in the main kitchen are 

a gorgeous shade of denim, actually called ‘De Nimes’ 

after the town in France where the material denim 

originated. “It makes a great foil against the reddish 

tones in the wood.” The counter and island unit are 

finished with worktops in Caeserstone’s composite 

marble. There’s underfloor heating in this area, 

everywhere except the pantry, which is positioned 

where it should be – “on the north side of the house, 

with no heating, so it acts like a second fridge.” 

We head next door into the snug, which used to 

be where the old front door – and a staircase down 

to a cellar, now blocked up – was situated. This has 

been turned into a cosy space, made warmer by the 

tawny oak beams – that are in evidence all through the 

house, but not oppressively so, because the building 

has such good proportions and high ceilings. “All 

the beams were nearly black, so we had them sanded 

back,” says Liz. “A huge and very messy job.” 

A small bureau with a writing desk is positioned over 

by the window, “filled with books that I keep meaning 

to read. There’s a wine fridge in this cupboard,” we peek 

inside. “Of course, that’s not the reason I like being 

here,” she smiles, “I can sit here almost unnoticed and 

can look out from my little corner over the garden.”

the library was originally very dark, with red walls and 

carpet. Liz has had floor-to-ceiling bookshelves installed, 

with picture lights instead of harsh overhead lighting, so 

that a gentle illumination washes down over the books. A 

vintage blind with a lovely portico design completes the 

look, matching in perfectly with the colour scheme. This 

room doubles up as a cosy dining room and is very warm. 

“I think it’s the insulation from the books,” she says. 

At the top of the wide and generous staircase, she explains 

how they managed to match up the new bannisters, rails 

and finials with the originals, so that little appears to have 

changed for centuries. “It was a bit of a jigsaw getting the 

proportions right, and then the tradesmen right,” explains 

Liz. “You have to take the whole thing into consideration, 

see the whole shape, then zone in and isolate any bit that’s 

not working.” Apparently at one stage in the last century 

there were three doors to the master bedroom – installed as 

a means of escape, because the lady of the house was having 

an affair with Prince Bernhardt of the Netherlands. 

Today the master suite looks very respectable, baronial even, 

with another mounted stag’s head and an antler chandelier. 

“The idea was Scottish country house, full of rich texture and 

timeless charm.” Two monumental lamps with tweed shades

The glamorous en suite bathroom is sleek and pale. Ever 

keen on recycling, Liz has cleverly used some of the old 

kitchen cupboards to make a vanity unit. “Simon Toynbee 

was very surprised to see them up here,” she laughs.

Another dramatic bathroom transformation is on this floor, as 

dark as the en suite is pale. The floorboards are very dark and the 

walls have been panelled and painted in Royal Navy from Little 

Greene. “Who knew navy would be such a hard colour to get 

right,” she says. “I went through sixteen to get the right one.” The 

rich blue contrasts perfectly with an inviting copper bath. There 

is also a secret panel in here that opens into the loft, which is 

now the plant room – so less priest hole than plumbers’ paradise. 

The country house theme continues in the guest room, but 

here the mood is softer, more of a botanical haven, with sage 

green walls, wallpapered in William Morris Willow Boughs. “I 

papered it myself – so hard!” she says. Liz also painted the French 

style bed frame – with Annie Sloan chalk paint – and then 

skillfully gilded the edges. She found the two small armchairs on 

eBay and had them re-upholstered in a floral print by Linwood. 

Back downstairs in the sitting room, Liz points out 

the curtains, which are from Susie Watson, who sources 

fabric made by artisans and craftspeople across the 

globe, giving them that unique handmade feel. 

Liz enjoys finding the right interior pieces – “you have to 

keep searching, but also know what’s available.” This ability, 

combined with her innate understanding of the geometry 

of living spaces, an eye for detail and practical solutions, has 

meant that Liz has been able to create a truly outstanding 

transformation within this historic and much-loved family home.

In recent times, the ancient town of Rye has become 

something of a centre for home style, with lots of 

fabulous shops and now The George hotel restored 

after a devastating fire, with the chicest contemporary 

interiors greatly enhancing its Georgian bones. 

What you don’t expect to find there is a house so fully 

renovated in the grooviest 1970s style, it is practically wearing 

flared trousers – but this was the only choice for Helen 

Walker, when she was making over the property to use as a 

family bolthole and Airbnb rental. “I wanted the house to 

be 70s, not a chocolate box cottage,” she says, as we sit at 

the rosewood dining table, next to the classic mid-century 

sideboard. “So I deliberately embraced the era the house 

was built in. I’ve always loved the 1970s, the vivid colours. 

I didn’t want to make it look like granny’s parlour.” 

With the entire far wall of the room resplendent with 

a mural of giant spots in purple and orange there is no 

chance of that, although when I ask, Helen explains 

that despite the huge scale, the wall treatment is actually 

wallpaper. “It’s made-to-size in three pieces per wall. 

The colour palette dictated the rest of the room.” 

This is most evident in the bright orange glass 

1960s light fitting which hangs over the dining table, 

perfectly mirroring the orange disc in the mural on the 

opposite wall – and it’s a taste of the way this happy 

colour is used to great effect throughout the house. 

What the wallpaper mural and light also point out is 

how smart Helen is at finding the perfect stuff to create 

the house as she envisioned it, from the most inventive 

sources, while staying strictly within budget. 

Her system comes down to five main resources 

– online searches, eBay, value chain stores and 

supermarkets, the splendid furniture and junk emporia 

of Rye, Hastings and St Leonards, and charity shops 

– with the odd segue into agricultural suppliers.

The wallpaper was an online find, while one light fitting 

was from Amazon, the other from the second-hand treasure 

trove that is Grand Designs on St Leonards seafront. 

The rugs are from Habitat at Argos, the disco ball plantpots 

from Asda, other accessories from Dunelm. The large floor 

lamp was a charity shop bargain. The dining table was an eBay 

find. As was the fabulous tan leather corner sofa. “I was going 

to buy a new one, but lead times for sofas are so long these 

days and I wanted to get the house finished after being

held up by Covid, so I went to eBay in the end. I found this 

IKEA leather one which worked perfectly for the layout.” 

Another source was stuff they had lying around at home, 

which is in the country outside Tenterden. “I bought 

the coffee table 20 years ago, when I was pregnant with 

my first daughter. I saw it in the paper. I’ve kept it all 

that time because I love it and now it has a place.” 

Another feature of this room, large French windows out on 

to the garden, which backs onto the river Rother, were already 

in place. “We didn’t have to do any big structural work, the 

layout was great for the space, the house was just a bit tired.” 

Now, it positively bounces with energy, something which hits 

you as soon as you enter the hallway, where Helen has given 

full rein to her love of orange. The scene is set with a vintage 

telephone table, complete with a vintage orange phone. 

Across the glass front door panel are orange jumbo-cord 

curtains from Habitat – the rest of the blinds and curtains 

for the house were from Dunelm – with a detail that adds 

that desirable finished look. “I had them shortened to the 

exact length, so they look bespoke.” Helen’s other suppliers 

are represented here too, with an orange shoe rack from 

Habitat and a vintage coat rack from a St Leonards shop. 

There’s more sunny orange in the kitchen, in a 1970s 

glass light fitting over the vintage Formica table and 

chairs from Grand Designs and even a salt and pepper 

grinder set in orange sunrise, found on eBay. 

The all-white kitchen came from another of Helen’s key 

spots – her family home. “We re-used an old Howdens 

kitchen from our house. We try to upcycle as much as 

possible.” In that spirit, the worktop was from eBay. 

The kitchen is very well equipped for a house that is 

going to be used for holiday lets, with a NEFF oven, an 

espresso machine and a Breville toaster and kettle – even 

the kitchen bin is particularly aesthetically pleasing. 

This isn’t just to have it nice for when the family use it – 

Helen has four children, three of whom aren’t old enough to 

drive yet, which can be problematic living in the country – 

“There’s nowhere they can walk to.” So, the odd stay in Rye 

offers the chance for them to go out and about independently, 

without the-taxi-of-mum-and-dad being required. 

But the high spec throughout the house is also part of 

Helen’s vision for the rental usage. “I wanted it to feel like 

a decent hotel,” she says. This becomes even more apparent 

when you head upstairs to the three bedrooms, all of which 

are beautifully appointed – with lovely bed linen on very 

comfortable-looking beds. As a frequent Airbnb user myself, 

this is often an area where properties fall down, so it’s great to 

see. “We’ve stayed in a lot of villas over the years for family

holidays,” says Helen, “and I know how important it is to have a good 

bed. We’ve had some terrible mattresses. So I invested in good mattresses 

– old fashioned, not foam – which cost £900 each, and good bedding. 

“The bed frames – all proper doubles and king-size, not those 

small ones – are from eBay, but with a good mattress, it’s a 

perfect combination. There was also that issue again that we 

couldn’t wait 16 weeks for a new bed to be made. This solution 

was so much cheaper and gives the rooms more character.” 

Continuing this level of service, each of the bedrooms has a 

smart LCD TV, a clock, a wastepaper bin and – something I was 

delighted to see – reading lights on both sides of each bed. Another 

thing that is all too often overlooked in holiday rentals. 

Another thoughtful detail is black-out linings on all the curtains, but these 

are all happy things that guests will discover over time. What will strike them 

straight away is the fabulous décor, which gives each bedroom its name. 

The Rainbow Room has an amazing serpentine rainbow stripe along one 

wall, from the same wallpaper mural company as the one in the sitting room. 

This is set off with a G Plan dresser and a – not matching, but beautifully 

complementing – chest of drawers that Helen found in a secondhand 

shop. The sunburst bamboo mirror was another Dunelm find.

To the left of the window is an unusually compact wardrobe 

– the result of a cunning online search. “I wanted each room 

to have a wardrobe, so people could hang their clothes up, 

and there was only a very limited space in this room, so I 

did an eBay search for ‘small wardrobe’ and this came up.” 

It was a happy outcome, especially as it came with 

a lovely matching dressing table with a long mirror. 

The wardrobe has a good number of wooden hangers 

inside, I note. Another Airbnb irritation eradicated. 

In the third bedroom, the River Room, there is another 

satisfying furniture outcome. What looks like one of those 

fabulous mid-century combined bed units, with bedside tables 

attached to the headboard, is actually two G Plan ‘Fresco’ 

bedside tables (with their very cool pedestal design) added

her striking pendant lights hangs over the bed and although 

it looks like a second-hand find, it’s actually brand new. 

The bathroom, on the landing between the bedrooms, 

was a particularly important project for Helen. “We 

gutted it and started again,” she says. “Although there 

is a downstairs cloakroom loo, there are no en suites, 

because there just isn’t enough room, so we wanted to 

put a sense of luxury into the shared bathroom. 

“We took out the bath and put in a large walk-in shower 

instead, which is such a simple way to get a big impact. 

We also installed double sinks with storage underneath.” 

Which is another detail that would be very welcome to me, 

if I was an Airbnb guest – so many holiday rentals have 

nowhere even to put your sponge bag (it drives me potty). 

Other pleasing details, which give the bathroom that 

boutique hotel feeling, are the large matte radiator and 

a lit mirror, both found online and luxe-looking. “I 

spent a lot of time looking for the right pieces.” 

The last stop on my tour with Helen is the part of 

the property where holiday residents will probably 

spend a lot of their time – the amazing garden.

Underneath the solar lights and disco ball (you can’t have 

too many in a 70s house) is a Habitat sofa and chairs with blue 

and pink cushions, designed for outdoor usage. The brightly 

coloured scatter cushions, found online, are also water resistant. 

Helen’s orange theme continues out here, with three lanterns 

(Dunelm again) and three striking convex mirrors on the 

black-painted fence. They look like designer pieces, but actually 

have far more prosaic origins. “They are the kind people 

use to see out of blind driveways,” says Helen. “I saw them 

online and thought they would be perfect for the garden.” 

They are – and also the ultimate example of the 

exceptional sourcing skills of this ingenious decorator.

Award-winning East Sussex 

College students selected to 

exhibit work at V&A Museum 

Three BA (Hons) Designer Maker students at 

East Sussex College have had their work selected to 

be exhibited in the world’s leading museum of art, design 

and performance, Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum, with 

two of the students having won City & Guilds national awards 

with cash prizes. The Pewter Live competition is held annually by 

the Worshipful Company of Pewterers. Alice Lawson, 28, won the Targett 

Award for her exceptional work titled ‘Tree of Life Body Sculpture’ 

which will be displayed at the V&A Museum. Sara Lee, 44, 

and Amanda Pattenden, 55, will also have their incredible work 

displayed at the V&A Museum with ‘Swimming medals’ and 

‘Emergence’ pieces respectively. The works will be shown 

at the V&A’s Whitely Silver Galleries from Saturday

Tonbridge’s upper sixth will be taking up places

What is your role as Captain of School? 

My role largely consists of coordinating 

my team of Purples (prefects) and 

acting as the conduit between the 

student body and Senior Heads. 

However, there are also lots of 

other difficult aspects to my role. 

What are your goals within this role? 

I endeavour to be a friendly and 

approachable face around school so that 

students feel comfortable flagging me 

down when in need of help, whilst also 

having the courage to stand up and put 

my own ideas forward. For me, leaving 

behind a legacy that outlives my time 

at King’s was always my goal as Captain 

of School, and so I relish the chance 

to lead workshops with younger year 

groups or attend meetings discussing 

school policy, as these conversations 

will have an impact on the careers of 

King’s students for years to come. 

Tell us about a tricky 

element to your duties. 

At times, it is challenging to report poor 

behaviour by students as you do not 

want to be labelled as untrustworthy 

by your peers, but ultimately, I have 

found that as long as you are acting 

with the school’s best interest at heart, 

you are making the correct decision.

do you spend your time? 

Other than my role as Captain of 

School, I spend the majority of my 

time in the Classics department. 

With only four students taking 

Latin in Upper Sixth, we feel very 

much like a tight-knit family. 

What are your plans for next year? 

Perhaps surprisingly then, I am hoping 

to read Economics at Bath university 

next year. I have also recently signed 

a professional rugby contract with 

Harlequins and represented England 

U18s, and so will continue to pursue a 

career in rugby alongside my studies.

unique for me is that you are actively

to read must come near to the top of 

the list of rewarding experiences too. 

How can parents/carers help support their child? 

Parents are of course their child’s first teachers, 

and we strongly believe that triangulating 

learning between home, school and child is 

key to successful outcomes. Parents can play 

a pivotal role in preparing their children for 

school and making that transition a smooth 

experience. It’s important to paint a positive 

image of school, even if as a child one didn’t 

enjoy it much. Schools have changed quite a bit 

since then! An ability to carry out some simple 

tasks independently will have obvious benefits. 

How is it best to prepare for the first day? 

Careful labelling of clothing is always a good 

plan. Show your child where you have labelled 

their items and pick a nice bright pen or 

label font. Try not to fuss your child as they 

approach the school building, this just leads to 

anxiety. Relax and enjoy your day and it will be 

more likely that your child will do the same!

At The Granville School we have a 

co-educational Pre-school for ages 3-4. 

We call it a Pre-school rather than a

we have wraparound care which is

Every day is a wonder when you are

to do a ‘Show and Tell’, or perform in 

a Christmas play, it’s an exciting age 

of ‘firsts’. Each of those moments is so

children about to start in education? 

Visit the setting for Newcomers’ or Taster 

Days to familiarise your child with the 

space and staff. Practise getting into their 

uniform, and be confident with toileting. 

Talk positively about school and the fun 

they will have. Seek out and share pictures 

on the school website of some of the 

activities they will be doing. Look upon 

the whole experience as a journey that 

you will share with your child and the 

families of the other class members – you 

will be friends for many years to come.

faces when choosing GCSEs and A Levels 

Any parent wants to 

support their child with 

making GCSE and A-level 

choices, guiding them but ensuring 

they make their own decisions. 

Balancing their passions and interests 

against what may be more practical 

down the line is no easy task, but 

hopefully these top tips will 

make the process a bit 

easier. 

Use your 

imagination 

At A-level the golden 

rule is... can the pupil really 

imagine enjoying two years of 

real depth in the subject and 

doing a lot of the relevant 

work – reading tons for 

philosophy and writing 

long essays, for 

example. 

Consider 

coursework 

A top tip for a GCSE 

programme is not to pick too 

many practical subjects that require 

lengthy coursework or portfolios. 

Doing Art and Textiles and Design 

Technology sounds like a lot 

of fun but the burden of 

coursework becomes 

untenable. 

Give yourself more options 

As a starting point, you will certainly 

be obliged to choose English, maths and 

science at GCSE which provide the core for 

most A-level choices. Some schools will only offer 

subjects if enough pupils choose it and have strict 

systems of ‘buckets’ from which choices must be 

made. This can cause uncertainty and inflexibility for 

you and your child so, if you have a choice of schools 

to attend, try to think ahead and look for one that 

can offer sufficient variety to suit your child’s 

interest, whatever that may be when the time 

comes. This is why at Eastbourne College 

we provide the resources to offer a free 

choice of a wide range at GCSE. 

Consider the consequences 

It invariably doesn’t go well if young 

people are forced to do subjects that they 

do not really enjoy, but as a parent you can 

and should frame the choice so they are aware of 

the realities and consequences of these decisions. 

For example, if your daughter or son wants to be a 

vet when they grow up, they must be good at maths 

and choose science subjects (especially chemistry). 

When presenting these options, it can be helpful to 

explain which doors will be closed and which will 

be left open based upon their choices, working 

backwards from the A-levels needed for 

certain degrees and the GCSEs needed 

to access certain A-levels. 

Follow your 

heart 

In the end, you cannot 

really go wrong if you 

understand that your 

daughter or son will 

thrive in the subjects 

they enjoy most. 

Focus in 

I mildly favour a coherent 

science or humanities focus, 

rather than ‘split-ticketing’ 

but it really depends on how 

developed your child’s university or 

apprenticeship plans are. I would 

avoid variety for variety’s sake, 

though, as that can mean you 

forgo the preparation for 

further specialisation at 

university. 

Less is more 

At A-level you are better 

off with three good grades 

than spreading yourself thinly over 

four subjects so only very confident 

highly-academic pupils should do more 

than three. Choosing maths, history 

or English is often a good starting 

point because they are the best 

facilitating subjects for science 

and humanities degrees 

respectively. 

Know what you’re 

signing up for 

Avoid allowing your child to 

choose a subject because it sounds 

interesting – they need to get really 

good advice from their school about 

what the subject entails to be sure they 

have the skills and interest. Pupils 

studying psychology and economics, 

for example, sometimes embark 

without knowing what the 

subject really is.

There is so much wonderful talent in our schools’ sports programmes – it’s time to celebrate! 

Nothing but Net 

ACS Cobham hosts first-of-its-kind beach volleyball tournament for schools across England 

Students from across England with Tiffin landing a close second. Chris Hykiel, ACS Cobham’s beach 

gathered in London to compete in 

volleyball team coach, says: “We hope the 

the UK’s first-ever beach volleyball Winning the Division 1 Girls’ 

event is a small stepping stone towards 

tournament for independent tournament was Lakenheath High School putting the UK on the world map for 

schools. During the event, hosted by ACS 

International School Cobham, at the Barn 

Elms Sports Centre on 6 May, students also 

received exclusive coaching from England’s 

highest-ranking beach volleyball players, 

Joaquin Bello, Javier Bello, Jess Grimson 

and Daisy Mumby; all of whom are due 

to compete at the Birmingham 2022 

Commonwealth Games. 

Twenty-seven pairs of students, aged 

14-17, entered the event, representing nine 

independent schools from across England: 

Sev enoaks School, Lycée Francais, Brighton 

College, Epsom College, Lakenheath 

High School, TASIS, Tiffin School, ACS 

Cobham and ACS International School 

Egham. 

Lycée Francais won the Division 1 

Boys’ tournament and ACS Egham placed 

second. ACS Cobham won the Division 

2 Boys’ event and Brighton College 

placed second. In the Division 3 Boys’ 

tournament, Epsom College placed first, 

and ACS Cobham achieved second place. 

In Division 2 Girls’, ACS Egham placed 

first and Brighton College second. In the 

Division 3 Girls’ event, ACS Cobham 

landed first place, with ACS Egham 

achieving second place. 

Alongside the student tournament, the 

world-renowned beach volleyball stars also 

played their own adrenaline-filled matches, 

giving students a chance to see the best of 

the best in action on the court. Impressed 

by the high standard of the students’ 

performances, the professional players 

also each selected a Most Valuable Player 

(MVP), who will receive a special award. 

The MVPs were: 

Arthur from TASIS, nominated by Daisy 

Mumby 

Sammy from ACS Egham, nominated 

by Javier Bello 

Chloe from Lakenheath High School, 

nominated by Jess Grimson 

Isabella from ACS Cobham, nominated

inspire more children and teenagers 

to take up the sport. ACS Cobham 

students benefit from state-of-the-art 

sports facilities on campus, with an arena 

housing a volleyball show court featuring 

tiered seating for 280 spectators. These 

outstanding facilities are also offered to 

ACS Cobham’s local partner state schools 

for their use. ACS students also have the 

opportunity to train regularly at beach 

volleyball courts in London.” 

Javier Bello, comments: “It was great 

to see so many young players enjoying 

beach volleyball and we really hope to 

see it consolidated in the school sports 

event calendar. It was a perfect day in the 

sunshine, and the tournament produced 

some exciting matches and rallies. We look

Something New 

According to Claremont, the key to success is trying new 

things and encouraging others to do the same 

Students on the Claremont Sports Leaders programme have been 

visiting local primary schools across East Sussex this term to 

help organise and run their own sports day events, and provide 

on-field coaching for aspiring young athletes. Following the success 

of their community hockey tournament earlier this year and work 

with Sussex Cricket Foundation, they have also hosted a primary 

school cricket tournament this term to inspire the next generation 

of cricketers. Claremont take an inclusive approach to sport by 

creating a learning environment where every child can learn and 

develop skills in a broad range of sporting pursuits, and test 

them out in competition. Pupils are encouraged to develop a 

life-long love of sport, to step out of their comfort zones and 

try something new, but to also aim high and master skills in 

the sports that they love.

Hickstead success for Mayfield School's riders 

Mayfield School's Equestrian team won two national titles 

at the NSEA (National Schools Equestrian Association) 

Inter-County Dressage & Show Jumping Championships at 

Hickstead. In Dressage, Mayfield won the Inter-County Team 

Championships for a fifth year in succession, with the team 

comprising Year 13 students Eloise, Alice and Isabella. Eloise 

also came out on top in the individual standings, winning the 

Preliminary County Dressage Title. Mayfield's Showjumping 

Team, featuring Ella, Anabelle, Daisy and Eloise, followed 

this up by winning the Inter-County 1m Showjumping Title 

for the second year in a row.

Ashford School proudly celebrates cricket success 

Ashford School embarked on a journey which started with 

over 900 schools competing to become the best U15 girls 

indoor cricket team in the country. Undefeated in the 

preliminary rounds the girls were filled with high hopes. 

The finals were played at the prestigious Lords Cricket 

Ground where the school hope to be watching their stars 

in the future! Ashford girls won their first three games, 

one comfortably and two coming down to the last over. 

They were set for the final against very tough opposition 

– Ipswich School. The girls saved their best for last and set 

their highest total with the bat scoring 94 runs in 8 overs, 

shutting the game down with two overs to spare. What 

a performance from a group of girls who showed talent, 

understanding, teamwork and most importantly enjoyed the 

journey! Well done to the new NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

Fraser Halliwell, Head of Radnor House tells 

us about his work and inspirations 

What inspired you to teach? 

BBC wildlife documentaries and 

specifically, David Attenborough. 

Attenborough, like all great teachers, 

is a master of inspiring curiosity. I 

thought I wanted to make nature 

programmes so studied in Bristol, 

but I switched paths when I realised 

it was the education, and not the 

film-making that had engaged me. 

Did you have a favourite subject 

when you were at school? 

Not really, just favourite teachers 

– it’s the singer, not the song. Any 

teacher could captivate me if 

they had a passion for their 

subject and took the time to 

get to know their pupils. 

Tell us about your time in Colombia. 

As a biology teacher, I was drawn to 

the phenomenal biodiversity of the 

country (second only to Brazil). 

I went on a two-year contract and 

ended up staying for thirteen! 

It’s a beautiful country and I 

met many wonderful people 

during my time there. 

How do you think your experience 

in Colombia influences your work? 

Colombia taught me a great deal: 

to have the courage to take risks 

because life is not a dress rehearsal; 

to persevere and face challenges 

with a growth mindset because there 

is more in us than we think; and 

to respect others, whatever their 

background or nature. These are 

values we hold dear at Radnor House. 

What do you enjoy most 

about your work? 

Teachers have the most important 

job in the world – to expand 

children’s horizons, encourage them 

to dream big, and enable them to 

thrive as active and responsible 

adults. I am privileged to serve 

a school community focused on 

preparing inquisitive young minds 

for a happy and successful life. 

What are the greatest challenges of 

your role as Head of Radnor House? 

The single greatest challenge is 

convincing young people they are 

amazing, and the scope of their 

potential is limitless. Mass media 

has made life more complicated 

for our children and it preys on 

their insecurities. The best defence 

is to celebrate their uniqueness 

and help build self-efficacy. 

How do you relax outside work? 

My greatest passion is the natural 

world. I have been lucky enough 

to travel widely, but whether it’s 

the Amazon rainforest or the South 

Downs, a good walk in the country 

does my spirit the world of good. 

What is your favourite book? 

The Time Rainbow by Lisamarie 

Lamb was published this year to 

mark the tricentenary of Combe 

Bank House – the home of our 

school near Sevenoaks. It is a 

wonderful tale in which Radnor 

pupils travel through time and have 

adventurous encounters with former 

illustrious residents of the house.

We offer our support in weekly club sessions, 

taught in friendly groups of six. Additionally, we 

provide targeted resources, videos for tricky bits

What outcomes do you see? 

This year we have 200+ children enrolled. Our 

pass rate percentage is in the high 80s. With the 

parent appeal process (which we ghost write for 

our students) this pass rate percentage is pushed 

into the 90s. 

What if the 11+ and a grammar 

education isn’t appropriate for my child? 

Please don’t worry – we will tell you 

straight away if we feel this is the case. We 

keep detailed records of every child’s individual 

progression and regularly talk with parents.. 

Do you also help children with learning difficulties? 

Children with a specific learning difficulty are 

welcomed into our clubs. We have children 

with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, autism and ASD 

working confidently and making strong progress. 

If an appeal is needed we make sure their 

paperwork is in order for appeal and support

Mayfield School tell us about how their Lifeskills programme 

helps students ‘meet the needs of the age’ 

At Mayfield our aim is to develop strong, outward looking, 

informed and compassionate young women. 

Our founder wanted Mayfield girls ‘to meet the needs of the 

age’ and the Lifeskills programme is designed to support them 

to take responsibility for their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, 

to plan for their further education, career and financial independence, 

to develop practical skills and understand their responsibility as global 

citizens; but it also aims to ensure those achievements stem from 

each student’s sense of her intrinsic worth and are informed by a 

compassionate empathy for others. 

Starting in Lower School, girls cover topics as diverse as dress codes, 

managing finances and coping with the pressures of media influencers. 

As they move through the school they will explore the workings of 

the political system, advertising and fake news, risk management, and 

personal safety as well as a full programme of relationships education. 

The Sixth Form programme looks to prepare Mayfield students for life 

beyond school. Practical topics are covered such as cooking on a budget, 

self-defence, rental contracts, understanding mortgages and insurance 

as well as preparing girls for the challenges of professional and personal 

relationships in a digital age. 

To allow meaningful exploration of complex issues Mayfield has 

introduced Lifeskills Days. This creates a space for engagement with the 

most contemporary elements of the preventative curriculum, often in 

workshops with leading professionals: a day might cover #metoo, women 

in the workplace, fertility, alcohol, spiking and county lines.

to make good choices and navigate life’s pressures 

Since the days of distance learning, there has been a 

greater focus on the importance of having balance 

in our lives and to support our children’s Personal, 

Social and Health Education (PSHE). 

Our ‘curriculum for life’ is both academic and pastoral, 

supporting the whole development of the child. The 

Pastoral and PSHE curriculum is taught from pre prep 

right up to sixth form, with flexibility planned in to allow 

for the changing needs of our students throughout the year. 

Our children will have many challenges throughout 

their lives so we teach and empower them to use healthy 

coping mechanisms to confidently meet them head on; 

making good decisions, exploring and living by our values, 

recognising and fostering healthy relationships, 

Taking informed risks and experiencing the many 

rewards of nurturing a positive attitude are not only 

introduced through the PSHE curriculum, but weaved into 

the very fabric of everyday school life at Claremont. This is 

achieved through a shared pastoral language whilst regular 

forums to facilitate student feedback help us identify where 

further support and discussion is needed. 

Whilst we are determined to maintain our high 

academic expectations, we recognise that some students 

become anxious during exam season, so this year we have 

added a range of wellbeing activities to the timetable 

including restorative yoga. The student-run Eco Store 

and many initiatives organised for Fundraising Week teach 

financial management skills whilst promoting a positive

We have developed our PSHE 

programme over the years. As well 

as ensuring it stays up to date with 

the latest developments – most 

recently and notably equality and relationships – we 

ensure it is expertly delivered by the school’s pastoral 

leaders who are trained and experienced in the issues 

being discussed. Specific teachers deliver their own 

speciality to ensure expertise across the programme. 

What makes PSHE at Hurst unique is how we 

intertwine it with our wellbeing programme. On 

alternate weeks Year 9 students take part in our 

Wellbeing Carousel which complements PSHE. This 

allows students to get involved in novel activities 

outside the curriculum to help them build confidence 

and skills which they may choose to develop further. 

All students participate in each activity and feedback 

each year as we develop the programme. 

One of the most popular aspects is our Forest 

and Farm activity when students learn how to make 

fires and build shelters whilst working in groups, 

before carrying out helpful tasks on the Hurst Farm. 

Students also enjoy yoga sessions, run by a specialist 

yoga teacher and spend time in the school gym with 

our strength and conditioning coach. Next year, all 

students will also take part in a mindfulness course, 

run by specially trained staff. 

Our combination of explicit PSHE lessons 

interwoven with the wellbeing programme helps 

support our pupils through Hurst and beyond.

That’s a Wrap! 

Wraparound childcare is priceless to busy parents, providing extra care on top of normal school hours, so how does it work? 

Dulwich Prep Cranbrook explain their flexible care 

Dulwich Prep Cranbrook has an extended day programme, 

which is highly tailored, offering as much flexibility 

as possible to accommodate working parents. 

Children can arrive at school from 8am, but there is also an early 

breakfast club option for Years 1 and above. This breakfast club 

begins at 7.15am enabling parents to catch the 7.34am train from the 

local train station and arrive at their desks in London before 9am. 

At the end of the school day, there is After School Care Club for 

children in Nursery up to Year 4, and then Prep Club for Years 5 to 

8, which extends the day until 5.30pm. Alternatively, there are all 

sorts of extra-curricular clubs. The 

school aims to provide fun, engaging 

ways to extend the school day, with 

different clubs and activities to 

appeal to all interests, the majority 

of which are run by staff and are 

incorporated into school fees. 

Children in Year 2 and above 

can also stay for tea until 6pm 

and thereafter, day boarding goes 

until 8pm for children in Years

Sutton Valence School’s provision for wrap-around care, 

wellbeing and pastoral support is at the forefront of everything 

they do. With excellent, recently renovated boarding 

facilities and dedicated wrap-around care staff, both students and 

parents have many options out of traditional school hours. 

To start the day, breakfast club in the refectory is a hub for the 

school community, especially boarders, providing the right nutrition 

to fuel the day ahead. Plus, early-morning training sessions in the 

health and fitness suite with a strength and conditioning coach 

are available to different year groups throughout the week. Flexiboarding 

is particularly popular with those attending these morning 

fitness sessions, providing the option to board on a flexible basis. 

After-school, students can head to the library where supervision is 

available for any late pick-ups and they can also get support with prep 

while there. The ‘Chat Room’ is also available for students seeking 

additional support, who need to talk or just see a friendly face. 

All-in-all, the school is full of resources, advice and support for those 

needing it. The wrap-around care feeds into a wider pastoral support 

system, which really focuses on ensuring all pupils are monitored, 

supported and able to thrive. A key aspect of this is a vertical tutoring 

system, which provides mixed Year 9 to Year 13 tutor groups. For 

older pupils this offers mentoring opportunities while also giving 

younger ones the security of knowing seniors. This is just one aspect 

which goes towards a palpable feeling of community throughout 

the school, as each cares for all and individuality is cherished.

On Your Mind 

New Beacon’s Headmaster, Mike Piercy, tells us about their recent mental health conference 

Our influence as educators has never been 

more important than it is right now. We are 

all concerned with academic achievement, 

educating the whole child, stimulating every part of 

the brain and, above all, personal development. It is 

the last of these which has come into sharper focus 

in recent years, and in aid of that, we held a mental 

health conference this May: Helping Young People 

Navigate the 21st Century. After three years of trying 

to run this event, our efforts were finally rewarded 

with invaluable advice from a host of experts on 

mental health and wellbeing. 

Dick Moore opened on behalf of the Charlie Waller 

Trust mental health charity, telling a very personal 

story. Touching on neuroscience, he explained that 

most mental health disorders begin in adolescence, 

and gave impassioned advice to help with that. It 

is easy to forget the privilege and responsibility of 

working with and shaping young people. Somewhat 

clichéd but we all remember certain teachers who had 

a profound, positive influence on our lives. 

The next morning, Dr. Pooky Knightsmith 

picked up the trail, talking of Adverse Childhood 

Experiences. She advised us to look out for the quiet 

ones who ‘fly under the radar’, to notice, to check in, 

and to ask not ‘what’s wrong?’ but ‘what’s happened?’. 

As adults, parents and teachers we feel we should 

be the fixers. Pooky and other speakers helped the 

audience unpack the backpack of responsibility 

we all carry, giving us the tools to help 

young people fix themselves. In the 

words of George Bernard Shaw, ‘What 

we want to see is the child in pursuit 

of knowledge and not knowledge 

in pursuit of the child’ – we want 

children to develop the strength 

and confidence to take charge of 

their own lives, while knowing 

where to find help when needed. 

Later in the conference, Richard Burnett 

of Tonbridge School and co-founder of 

Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP), 

slowed the pace by giving us a simple 

mindfulness exercise; a Personal Development 

Coach emphasised values; a GP spoke about 

clinical support and a counsellor unpacked 

his own toolkit. Pooky Knightsmith closed 

the conference by reminding us of self help, 

pointing out that, as with the oxygen mask in 

an aircraft, if we have no oxygen we cannot 

help others. 

The range of experts we heard from was 

truly diverse, each with different approaches 

and perspectives, yet there were common 

strands. My big takeaway was that we have to 

ask: are we too obsessed with achievement? 

And do we confuse that achievement with 

success? The world can be complicated and 

competitive (arguably increasingly so), and 

it’s important that children aren’t crushed 

by that while they’re still trying to grow. I 

sometimes talk to our pupils about ‘realistic 

ambition’. Ambition is healthy; unrealistic 

ambition, the pressure of expectation, not 

so, and it is potentially seriously damaging 

to mental health. As I take parents round the 

school, we stop and listen to the happy sounds 

of children at play – children happy to be at 

school – and that’s the trick. Let us not be too 

obsessed with achievement. Let us focus on 

emotional wellbeing. Individual personal 

achievement will follow.

Outdoor learning is a large part of 

Somerhill’s ethos, which is not 

surprising considering their 150 

acres of glorious parkland, with woodland, 

a large pond area, and even a lake. Used for 

everything from den-building and pond 

dipping, through bee and gardening clubs, 

to team-building and overnight camping, it 

is an intrinsic part of the school experience. 

Classes of children can often be found 

hunting for worms, measuring angles 

with sticks, building Viking model houses 

or practising Shakespearean lines in the 

grounds. Sustainability is also greatly 

promoted through gardening clubs and a 

school-wide tree planting programme with 

the grounds staff. 

Elsewhere, the extensive sports facilities 

include rugby and football pitches for the 

winter, and cricket pitches and athletics 

track and field for the summer, all of which 

are expertly looked after by a fantastic 

team of grounds staff and a sophisticated 

drainage system to prevent water-logging. 

The school also has an enviable 

reputation for its much-admired extensive 

cross-country grounds. 

But there’s also plenty of room for play. 

The large treehouse complex on the edge 

of the woodland is a kids’ paradise and 

perfectly complements the play areas dotted 

around the site. Pre-prep children have their 

own outdoor play area with child-friendly 

artificial turf and Pre-school pupils are 

encouraged to explore the big outdoors and 

experience the fresh air with the ‘Saplings’ 

initiative. This is a full day outdoor 

programme based on the principles of 

Forest School that takes place in a dedicated 

outdoor woodland area with the facilities 

needed to support self-care, clean running 

water, a Yurt for protection when needed, 

and plenty of nature to provide education.

Burrata with grilled 

peaches, basil oil & 

pistachio 

Prep time: 20 mins 

Cooking time: Around 10 mins 

Serves 4 

This dish is a crowd 

pleaser and perfect for a 

summer barbeque! The 

sweet peaches work so 

well with the salty cheese, 

sharp basil oil and nutty 

textures of pistachio. 

Everything comes 

together so easily and can 

be made in advance. 

• 2 burrata balls 

• 3 peaches, sliced 

• bunch of basil 

• 1 garlic clove 

• 4 tbsps extra virgin olive oil 

• squeeze of lemon juice 

• rocket leaves 

• pistachio kennels 

1. Begin by slicing your peaches into 

wedges. Halve the peaches, twist off 

the stone and slice into 2 cm pieces. 

2. Heat a grill pan on a high heat, 

brush with oil and place the peaches cut 

side down. They will take 3-4 minutes to get 

charred. Once ready, flip to char the other side. 

3. Move onto making your basil oil. In a blender 

add your basil, oil, garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper 

and blend to form a smooth consistency. If it is not smooth 

enough, add a drop of water to help it come together. 

4. Now it’s time to assemble! Put your drained burrata balls on a platter 

(you can use mozzarella as an alternative), arrange your grilled peaches around the 

burrata balls, then add the rocket leaves and toasted pistachio nuts before drizzling 

with that beautiful basil oil! This is best served with crusty bread.

Beetroot orzo with 

goats cheese, lemon 

& dill

Serves 4 

This recipe combines 

my love of Italian 

food with a twist 

of Polish flavours 

from my heritage. It 

is extremely vibrant 

and a light meal for a 

hot summer’s day. This 

dish will make you beam 

with its bright flavours! 

• 250g pack of cooked beetroot 

• 1 onion, diced 

• 2 garlic cloves, minced 

• 400g orzo 

• 800ml vegetable stock 

• bunch of fresh dill 

• crumbled goats cheese 

• lemon zest 

1. Start by adding your orzo to 

salted boiling water and cook 

until al denté, this should take 

7-8 minutes. Stir occasionally as 

orzo can stick to your pan. 

2. Meanwhile add your diced 

onion to a pan with oil, when 

translucent add minced garlic and 

cook for a further 2 minutes. 

3. Add this to a blender along 

with your beetroot, veg stock, 

salt and pepper, and blend. 

4. Once your orzo is cooked, 

drain it, reserving a small amount 

of pasta water and combine with 

your blended beetroot purée. 

5. Mix well and add chopped dill, 

then serve with crumbled goats 

cheese, lemon zest and extra dill.

Fig frangipane tart 

Prep time: 20 mins, plus chilling time 

Cooking time: Around 40 mins Serves 6 

This dessert screams summer and is 

so simple to make. Everyone will be 

impressed with such a delicious bake! 

For the pastry: 

• 200g plain flour 

• 100g butter 

• 1 egg yolk 

• 1 tbsp cold water 

 

For the frangipane: 

• 100g butter 

• 100g caster sugar 

• 2 eggs 

• 1 tsp vanilla extract 

• 100g ground almonds 

• 3 figs, sliced 

• 1 tbsp flaked almonds 

1. To make the pastry add all your 

ingredients to a food processor, blitz 

until it forms a soft ball shape, compress 

and wrap and put in the fridge for 

at least 30 minutes before cooking. 

2. Whilst chilling, make the frangipane 

by beating butter and sugar together 

until pale with a hand mixer, then 

add vanilla and beaten eggs bit by 

bit, until fully combined. Stir in your 

ground almonds, then set aside. 

3. Roll out your chilled pastry to fit a 

23cm tart tin, trim, and add fork holes 

to the base, then blind bake your pastry 

with parchment and baking beads for 

5-10 minutes at 180°C, this will ensure 

a perfectly cooked tart. Remove the 

beads and cook for another 5 minutes. 

4. When your pastry has cooked, 

remove it from the oven and spoon 

in the glorious frangipane mixture, 

using a pallet knife to smooth out 

the surface. Add sliced figs and 

scatter flaked almonds, then cook for 

20-25 minutes, or until golden. 

5. This tastes beautiful slightly 

warm out of the oven, dusted with 

icing sugar, accompanied by a 

drizzle of fresh cream on the side.

A Perfect Fit 

When it comes to travel cosmetics, the best things now come 

in small packages, as Josephine Fairley explains

I 

am never going to be the sort of 

traveller who saws my toothbrush 

in half (as some hikers do), to 

reduce the weight of my luggage. I 

have in fact been known to travel as 

if headed off on the Grand Tour – 

not quite accompanied by a stack of 

monogrammed Louis Vuitton trunks, 

but let me tell you: if squeezing stuff 

into a suitcase was an Olympic sport, 

I’d definitely be on the rostrum. 

This summer, though, it’s all 

different. Airlines have in some cases 

been warning travellers to take hand 

luggage only, in order to avoid holdups 

– which means packing lighter 

has become an imperative. And the 

fact is, beauty products are often 

weighty – which means that downsizing 

your kit can save space (and help 

avoid any extortionate excess fees). 

There are three schools of thought 

about travel beauty products. One 

is that we should simply decant our 

regular products into small, screwtop, 

perhaps stackable containers in 

a very minimalist way. I do this with 

products that are easily identifiable – a 

visit to MUJI makes this simple – but 

having more than once applied foot 

cream to my face instead of daily SPF 

(because they had exactly the same 

texture), I’ve realised this isn’t always 

practical, at least for me. (There’s always 

the possibility of DYMO labelling, 

of course, but I never seem to get 

round to that as I’m trying to tick off 

everything on my To-Do list, before 

finally closing down my computer as 

the airport taxi sits purring outside.) 

The second approach is to use a 

holiday as an opportunity to try out all 

sorts of skincare and beauty products 

for the first time. I definitely do a bit 

of this, using samples I’m given when 

shopping, via my quarterly Liberty 

The Beauty Drop subscription, or by 

buying interesting, curated beauty 

kits – but it’s never wise to introduce 

an entire new regime at the same 

time, because the risk of a reaction, 

as your face is suddenly exposed to 

many ingredients it doesn’t necessarily 

recognise, is definitely not negligible. 

My approach, then, would be a 

sort of hybrid: the odd product I’ve 

decanted, a few new finds that I’m keen 

to try, and some dinky-sized versions 

made by the brands themselves of 

products I know and love, love, love; I 

can certainly refill any jars, if not tubes, 

from the full-sized product, in future. 

So, let’s start with some favourites, 

which I know my complexion and scalp 

are going to get along with just fine. 

Cleanser – Liz Earle Cleanse & 

Polish, from £7.50 for 30ml Starter 

Kit. Liz Earle have always been brilliant 

at doing intro/travel sizes, including 

this ‘Hall of Fame’ cleanser, with its 

familiar eucalyptus/aromatic scent. 

Night Cream – L’Occitane 

Immortelle Divine Cream, £14 for 

8ml. At one point this was the highestscoring 

‘Miracle’ treatment ever trialled, 

for The Beauty Bible Awards – it’s 

still right up there, and remains one 

of my absolute favourite moisturisers 

– and this little jar of Divine cream 

is just darling. NB When it comes 

to daily SPF for face protection, I 

pack a full size to encourage generous 

slathering. No skimping there. 

Serum – Balance Me Bakuchiol 

Smoothing Serum, £12 for 7ml. 

Bakuchiol is nature’s alternative to 

retinol, for smoothing and brightening 

skin; this serum leaves skin supersilky-soft 

and I am addicted. 

Eye Treatment – Balance 

Me Brightening Eye Serum, £11 

for 7ml. We’re talking about what I 

ACTUALLY use, here – so no apologies 

for two Balance Me products; with 

light-reflective mica particles, this 

visibly brightens the under-eye area 

while working to tackle fine lines, 

wrinkles and puffiness.

creams are one of the beauty world’s biggest bargains, and 

this softening threesome is infused with a wonderfully 

uplifting blend of lemon, neroli and mandarin oils. 

Haircare – Innersense Hydrate Travel Trio, £22. 

My highlighted blonde hair is perpetually thirsty, but it 

just slurps up these shine-boosting, moisture-powered 

natural hair products (so much so that I store full 

sizes at my hairdresser, to use when I’m there). The kit 

features a ‘Hair Bath’ (a.k.a. shampoo), conditioner 

and leave-in conditioner, which is brilliant for working 

through hair before swimming, as protection. 

Make-up kit – an increasing number of make-up 

bestsellers are now offered as minis, so I’ll be switching 

my full sizes up with the following: budge-proof Bobbi 

Brown Long Wear Crema Shadow Stick Mini, £14, 

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Airbrush Flawless Finish, 

£20 (the full size of this velvet-finish bronzer is much 

too big to carry around), and Benefit Bad Gal Bang 

Volumising Mascara Mini, £13.50, which in my 

experience eliminates the need for waterproof mascara. 

Nary a smudge, I find, even when I put my head 

underwater. (Albeit that’s not something which happens 

THAT often, as I tend to swim with my head well above 

the waves, rather like the Loch Ness Monster.)

No matter how hard I try, I can only manage 

three minutes of meditation before I’m utterly 

distracted, bored or find myself doing something 

else. My monkey-mind won’t rest. I’ve tried listening to 

whale music, birds, bees and a rainforest, which only left me 

more stressed than I was before I started listening to it… 

Many people swear by the Calm app – my husband is a 

huge fan – however as much as I love Stephen Fry’s voice, the 

sleep story about the lavender fields in Provence failed me. I 

listened right to the end and spent the next hour wondering 

what was going to happen next (when not thinking about 

tomorrow’s to do list). Those monkeys just keep chattering. 

Then a friend suggested we tried forest bathing. 

You’ve got to be kidding, I told her; yomping for hours 

through a forest wilderness before jumping naked into a 

freezing, murky Shrek-like swamp pool and being bitten 

by bugs is so not my thing. My friend persisted – ‘it 

won’t be anything like that, come on – you’ll love it.’ 

So, purely in the interest of research, and having been 

promised I could drop out at anytime, I tagged along. 

We met in a car park along with a few other newbies who 

were all looking equally apprehensive. But within minutes, 

our welcoming, gentle guide had instantly put us all at ease 

We walked for just a few minutes – forest bathing isn’t 

about exercise so you don’t need to worry about fitness 

levels – before finding a comfortable space to settle. For 

some that meant sitting against a strong tree. Me? I did 

what was natural and lay face flat down with my head 

in my hands. ‘Shinrin-Yoku’ the Japanese for ‘Bathing 

in the Forest’ literally means to bathe your senses in the 

atmosphere of the forest and that is exactly what our guide 

encouraged us to do. I found that by tuning in to the sounds 

and smells of the forest I was less distracted by my endless 

to-do lists. I felt no pressure and if my mind wandered, by 

re-focusing my senses of hearing and smell it was easy to 

return to the incredibly immediate experience of being in 

the forest and discover sounds and smells I hadn’t previously 

appreciated. For once, the chattering monkeys were silent. 

After what seemed like 20 minutes, I was shocked 

to learn 2 hours had passed and our session was over. 

I felt incredible – calm, peaceful and happy. 

We’re told that being in nature contributes greatly to our 

overall wellbeing. Trees emit oils into the air (phytoncides) 

to help protect them from bacteria and damaging insects. 

These are also known to boost our immune systems, reduce 

depression, improve sleep quality, increase memory and 

boost energy. But the reality of this connected experience 

with nature really brought this all home to me

Quite often when we talk about ‘improving our 

health’, we make specific choices about the 

food that we eat or the amount of exercise that 

we do, but how often do we make a conscious effort 

to improve our mood, our relationships or work on 

how we feel? Living with a long-term physical health 

condition, for example, can have a serious impact on 

mental wellbeing. In fact, nearly one in three people with 

a chronic physical health condition also have a mental 

health issue, such as depression or anxiety. Similarly, those 

who are experiencing mental health issues are also more 

likely to have poor physical health where looking after 

their health is an additional challenge, as well as the direct 

effects of chronic stress on the body. That said, just as our 

mental and physical health can have a negative impact 

on one another, they can also positively influence each 

other, so what you do for your body to stay physically 

healthy, can also support your mental wellbeing.

rich in fibre – think colourful fruit and vegetables,

If you grind your teeth when you’re not eating, you may have a disorder called 

bruxism. Constant teeth grinding and clenching can cause your teeth to wear down 

over time. They can even become shorter and eventually break. Tooth grinding 

affects more than just your teeth, too – you may face discomfort and stiffness 

in the jaw, frequent headaches, migraines, insomnia, or even depression. 

What is BOTOX for grinding and clenching? 

BOTOX can help relieve the muscle soreness that comes with bruxism and

Where have all the flowers 

gone? It seems like only 

last week that the borders 

were full of colour, and now they’ve 

faded – just when summer is in full 

swing and we are outside, eating 

alfresco and enjoying the warm days. 

The trouble is that our traditional 

cottage garden, classic English blooms 

don’t always last for long. Most will 

have finished flowering by July and 

can also have quite straggly foliage 

by that time too. Do not despair. 

There are ways to salvage the situation 

and keep the garden brimming 

with colour for months to come. 

Chop chop 

Before rushing out to the garden 

centre to buy more plants, take a look 

at those already in the borders. If you 

have geraniums, lupins, delphiniums 

and other flowers that grow up from 

the base, cut them right back now that 

they’ve finished flowering. Be ruthless 

and cut everything – flower stems 

and foliage to the ground – and by 

August they will be back, with a repeat 

show of flowers and tidy new leaves. 

Endless flowers 

If you do find yourself wanting to 

buy gap fillers there are a few amazing 

plants out there that we should make 

plenty of room for in the garden. 

These star performers will flower from 

June until forever, providing continual 

colour without much fuss until the 

frosts stop them in their tracks. 

Verbena bonariensis has tall, delicate 

purple flowers on long wiry stems 

that will weave their way though 

other plants. Butterflies and bees love 

this flower, but you may go off it a 

bit, as it may rampantly self-seed all 

over the garden. Lower growing and 

spreading, is Geranium ‘Rozanne’, 

once voted plant of the century no 

less at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 

this is a truly amazing geranium, but 

may need trimming back if it sprawls 

about too much or gets above itself. 

Another low growing, endlessly 

flowering plant is the everlasting 

wallflower Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, 

which is also evergreen. It will flower on 

and off from March until November, 

but despite its name, it does get a 

bit tired looking after a few years of 

non-stop blooming. The good news 

is that it’s easy to take cuttings from. 

Tall, floaty and delicate Gaura 

‘Whirling Butterflies’, its flowers 

perched along the wiry stems like a 

proliferation of pretty little butterflies 

is also wonderfully floriferous. Like 

many of us it prefers a sunny open 

situation and won’t like sitting in 

cold, wet clay through the winter. 

Dahlias are in full swing now, and 

with any luck will provide a sumptuous 

summer spectacle from now until

the frosts. They are greedy plants and 

need rich, well drained compost and 

plenty of moisture. Dead head them 

regularly to keep the flowers coming 

and then, once the frost has cut them 

back, either lift and store the tender 

tubers somewhere frost-free for the 

winter, or heap up with mulch and 

leave them to take their chances. 

Gap fillers 

This is where annuals come into their 

own – cheerful, abundant and merrily 

flowering all summer long – providing 

you can stop them from setting seed. 

They are great for filling gaps where 

there were early flowering bulbs and 

biennials and can either be grown (or 

bought) in pots to plant out, or sown 

directly from seed where they are to 

flower. Annuals might only live for 

one year, but they pack an immediate 

punch because they’re in such a huge 

rush to complete their life cycle. Dead 

heading thwarts the process and makes 

them produce more flowers. Annual 

flowers like cosmos and sweet peas 

respond well to this and make lovely 

cut flowers too. For a light and frothy 

contrast try airy umbellifers like Ammi 

magus or Orlaya grandiflora. Love-in-amist 

is another floaty flower and – like 

the annual opium poppy – has pretty 

seed heads that last for a long time. 

Structure – and colour 

– from shrubs 

Shrubs provide height, presence and 

act as the backbone of a mixed border, 

carrying it through the seasons as the 

more ephemeral flowers come and go. 

It pays to think carefully about which 

of them to grow, and to choose those 

that will work especially hard to earn 

their keep, producing flowers, berries, 

autumn colour or evergreen foliage. 

Colour can also come from leaves – and 

leaves last longer than flowers. Think 

about the overall shape too and about 

how large they will get. Aim for

contrasting habits so that you don’t end 

up with a line of dumpy ‘Mr Blobbys’. 

Many of the familiar flowering shrubs 

– Philadelphus, Weigela, Spiraea and 

Choisya etc have finished flowering 

by July, but there are some good late 

summer bloomers. Hydrangeas have 

long-lasting bracts that fade beautifully 

into autumnal shades (and also make 

great cut flowers), Hibiscus will 

provide an exotic boost in shades of 

pink, blue or white, and the Buddleias 

will bring in butterflies and bees. 

Smaller shrubs like Caryopteris, with 

its sky blue flowers are useful in the 

middle of the border, and the low 

growing Ceratostigma wilmotianum 

has cerulean blue flowers and brilliant 

autumn foliage. There is a huge range 

of Hebes, with evergreen foliage and 

late summer flowers that are very 

enticing to butterflies and bees. The 

low growing Hebes are well behaved 

and gently enlarge into fairly tidy 

mounded shapes, but be careful with 

the bigger ones, as they can get leggy if 

not pruned regularly. Do this in April, 

once the worst of the weather is over. 

Fabulous foliage 

It’s easy to only focus on the flowers 

when choosing plants, but foliage can 

have as much colour as a flower, and is 

far longer lasting. Foliage really comes 

into its own once the initial impact 

of summer blooms has faded. Large 

leaves and architectural foliage will 

also bring structure and unity to the 

border and help set off any flowers 

to good effect. Try the exotic looking 

Melianthus major, with its glaucous, 

serrated leaves (it will be cut down 

by the frosts as it is slightly tender, 

but perks up again in the spring). 

Euphorbia ‘Wulfenii’ also has glaucous 

leaves, but these are evergreen and it 

has the added advantage of handsome 

lime green bracts in spring. A useful, if 

diminutive, group of plants that seem 

to grow in any situation, including 

tricky dry shade are the Heucheras. 

There is a striking, almost black variety 

called Obsidian, several cultivars 

come in opulent maroon shades, but 

there are lighter colours too, and for a 

splash of orange, try H. Marmalade. 

Late bloomers 

There’s a whole host of late-comers 

to the borders that are just warming 

up now. Many of these are in the 

daisy family – plants like Rudbeckias, 

Echinaceas, Asters and Heleniums. The 

range of colours are suitably sultry for 

late summer, verging on autumnal – 

shades of dusky pink, mellow oranges, 

russet and mahogany, with splashes 

of blue and mauve from the asters. 

Some have long lasting seed-heads 

too, so once the flowers have finished 

they persist as silhouettes, looking 

artistically sculptural when backlit 

against grasses in the autumn light. 

The salvia, or sage family is a large 

one – and keeps being added to, as 

the Russian sage Perovskia has now 

been re-christened as Salvia ‘Blue 

Spire’. This is a useful late flowering 

shrubby perennial that mixes well 

in the border or among grasses. 

Tender salvias are at their best in 

late summer and will survive a mild 

winter in a sheltered position. Salvia 

‘Amistad’ is a favourite, slightly 

tender, tall and airy, with attractive 

purple flowers that the bees love. 

Sedum spectabile is another bee 

magnet and a great addition to the front 

of the border, providing long lasting 

colour right through the autumn too, 

as the nectar-packed flowers fade into 

attractive seed heads in shades of russet 

and bronze. Sedums are easy to care for 

and will put up with many situations, 

but given a choice they’d prefer 

sunshine and free draining conditions. 

All in all, once you start making 

plans for later in the summer and 

choosing long, or late flowering 

plants, it’s not impossible to keep the 

colour going, if not forever, then at 

least for the whole of the summer.

Glorious 

Sue Whigham delves into the 

background of this hardy perennial 

Bearing in mind what sparkle and zing the bright 

flowers of geums bring to the garden, I’m wondering 

why we don’t have more of them here but the 

three G. chiloense hybrids we do have, are well known 

varieties, (G. ‘Mrs. J. Bradshaw’, G. ‘Lady Stratheden’ 

and G. ‘Totally Tangerine’) and have been flowering for 

weeks. They certainly make their presence known and 

G. ‘Totally Tangerine’ floating above a sea of Euphorbia 

cyparissias ‘Fens Ruby’ is glorious. The fourth is a little 

Geum rivale, so delicate and so pretty but most definitely 

in the wrong place. It’s in the front of a border and is 

almost totally swamped by a self seeded hypericum. The 

hypericum might well have to go one of these days and the 

geum needs moving to a more shaded spot. It’ll thank me 

when I move it to a roomier position later in the season. 

The first thing to know about geum is that there are three 

groups; the best known being the Geum chiloense forms 

which are native to an island off Chile where they thrive in 

a combination of a cold, wet climate and cool, damp soil. 

The second group are G. coccineum which are alpines native 

to the Balkans and Northern Turkey and the third is G. rivale 

which are much shorter and are happiest in shady areas. They 

have ‘nodding’ flower heads and the many hybrids have an 

astonishing variety of different and delicate flowers in the 

most beautiful and subtle colours. So different from the G. 

chiloense varieties with their bright and vibrant blooms. 

We are lucky enough to have the National Collection of 

Geum here in Kent. Sue Martin, who holds the Collection, 

grows geum informally in a quarter acre cottage garden 

setting tucked away in a peaceful spot in the village of 

Frittenden. Her first geum, the alpine, Geum montanum came 

from Elizabeth Strangman’s nursery and her second was a 

deservedly popular Dutch introduction, G. ‘Prinses Juliana’, a 

stunning orange flowered variety which thrives in a moist soil. 

Monty Don was right when he said the other day 

something to the effect that visiting gardens is the way to 

learn and to get ideas. It is also great fun of course. I don’t 

know what I was expecting but coming through the gate 

to see geum growing informally as they do at Sue Martin’s 

garden was such a treat. The previous owner of the garden 

had grown vegetables and as a result the ground was well 

worked and had been regularly improved over the years. 

So from a blank canvas over thirty odd years ago, Sue has 

created a cottage garden full of variety and interest; crammed 

as it is with plants and shrubs as well as her geum collection. 

I really liked her Elaeagnus ‘Quicksilver’ with its silver

leaves and sweet scent and 

the geum, of course! 

Bearing in mind that the 

soil in Frittenden is a heavy 

clay, Sue adds both grit and 

compost when she plants out 

another area of geum. The 

idea is to grow two or three 

in each part of the garden and 

then to record how they fare 

in slightly different conditions 

depending on sunlight levels 

and their aspect. At present 

she has at least 115 different 

varieties in the garden and 

she knows them, their habits 

and their growing patterns 

intimately. Records are kept of 

flowering times and length of 

flowering on a yearly basis and 

whilst they vary, with a bit of 

dead heading, many of them 

come into flower in May and 

carry on for months. Some 

geum can be promiscuous, 

so hybrids are kept a close 

eye on. I particularly liked 

the large clump of Geum 

‘Bachelfe’. Its yellow/white 

drooping flowers were almost 

over but the achenes (fruits) 

were particularly decorative. 

Sue says that it is so vigorous 

there is only room for one 

in the Collection and this 

one has to be kept under 

control. It makes for a 

great ground cover plant. 

So geum are members of 

the Rosaceae family and to my 

mind have everything going 

for them. No wonder there are 

always great displays of them 

at the RHS Chelsea Flower 

Show and they were certainly 

in evidence this year. It was 

good to see them in Jo Swift’s 

Our Green Planet and RHS 

Bee Garden, destined to go 

to a school after the Show.

So geum are brilliant pollinator plants 

as well as being slug and snail resistant, 

with semi evergreen leaves and, in 

the main, a long flowering period. 

Geum chiloense are marvellous for 

the front of a border as they are ‘see 

through’ plants. They have long, 

narrow, branching and often hairy stems 

with clusters of bright flowers at the top 

of the stem in a huge variety of colours 

and can be both single and double. As 

G. chiloense comes true from seed, it’s 

an idea to leave some seed heads to 

mature and produce that seed. They 

can then be sown and overwintered in 

a cold frame or something similar. 

However, as geum grow from 

rhizomes, another way of reproducing 

the plant would be to make basal 

cuttings in the autumn having lifted the 

plant. Sue once produced an astonishing 

twenty eight new plants from dividing 

the rhizomes of G. ‘Hilltop Beacon’ 

which is a particularly vigorous 

chiloense variety. How satisfying! This 

variety has soft tangerine flowers, 

complete with a frilled edge and pink 

undertones on the reverse. It grows well 

in light shady conditions and should 

flower from May through to August. 

And whilst geum last for years, it is 

a good idea to divide them regularly, 

either in the autumn or early spring. 

The plants in the National Collection 

will be divided in the autumn. You’ll 

know, hopefully, when the plant is 

ready to be divided as, rather like some 

grasses, the strongest growth appears to 

be around the edges with a bit of a bare 

centre left in the middle of the plant.

over subsequent years eventually

Headcorn is celebrating the 

800th birthday of the church. 

Although there was a church on 

the site prior to 1222 this was 

the first recorded mention of it, 

when Henry of Ospringe was 

appointed as the first Rector. 

There will be displays prepared by 

the local history society, historical 

objects and documents, flowers, 

refreshments and quizzes for 

the children. The local primary 

school have prepared a display 

and Henry of Ospringe will 

greet visitors. On the Saturday 

evening from 7pm there will be 

a concert by local musicians.

are some steep slopes which are 

not suitable for those with limited 

mobility. Suitable for children 

aged 10 and above. Please wear 

appropriate clothing to be warm 

and comfortable as most of the 

tour will be out of doors in the 

town streets with limited places

Jane Howard gets ready to bale 

the Coopers Farm hay – with 

the help of a handy neighbour 

It’s July so thoughts turn to making 

hay. We turn the cattle out in the spring 

and together with the sheep they spend 

all summer munching away and keeping the 

grass down, raising their young and growing fat and 

glossy along the way. But in order for grass to grow 

the ground temperature has to be above 10˚C – once 

the autumn turns to winter it stops growing and we 

need hay to keep the animals fed through the winter. 

So in the spring we have to decide which fields we 

will use for grazing and which will be kept back for 

hay. The grass in these meadows will hopefully grow 

tall and thick and by July we will be 

on the alert for four or five days of 

good weather when, as they say, we 

will make hay while the sun shines. 

When we first moved to Coopers 

Farm we were full of romantic notions 

about the pleasures of hay making 

and in anticipation we purchased the 

necessary equipment – an ancient tedder, 

a worn out baler and a trusty Massey 

Ferguson tractor. Apart from the latter 

it never occurred to us to question why 

so much of this small, rather charming 

but distinctly outdated kit, was always available to buy. 

And we seemed to be the only people keen to buy it! 

First off our neighbour would arrive to mow the field 

and then we would take over. A few hours after mowing 

we would go tedding with our tedder, which is like 

a giant whisk that flings the grass in the air to settle 

across as large a surface area as possible to start drying. 

A couple of days and two or three teds later it would 

be dry enough, so husband Adrian would do something 

technical to the tedder (I never bothered to ask what) 

and instead of spinning and flinging it would collect the 

hay into rows known as winnows. Time to put the tedder

away and get out the baler, which to us novices looked 

like a cats cradle of string and confusion and indeed 

proved to be so. Luckily trusty neighbour with a lifetime 

of hay making experience under his belt would return to 

coax our baler into action and leave us 

with a field full of several hundred bales. 

At this point rain would usually threaten, 

and we then had to call in all the strong 

lads we knew and offer money and 

beer to hopefully get it in and stacked 

before the heavens opened to ruin it. 

This scenario played out for 

several years before it occurred to 

us there had to be another way. Ask 

the neighbour to make our hay! 

These days he arrives in the field 

with a huge tedder with arms which 

unfold to make something about as wide as a tennis 

court (ours had a six foot wing span). Two or three 

trips round the field and job done. Similarly he has a 

big round baler that wraps the hay up into 6ft bales, 

covers them in net and spits them out. Bloomin’ 

marvellous, with the added advantage that should it 

rain the wrapping gives the bale a protective layer, 

so no rush and no bribes necessary to get it in. 

By the end of July the barns will be filled to the rafters 

and there is nothing better than cutting open a bale 

of a hay on a cold frosty January morning to release 

the most heady aroma of a hot summer day. Bliss.
