And the events keep coming

Following the success of the Kilmacolm & Port Glasgow

Agricultural Show and the Houston & Killellan Kirk Carnival

in May, we enjoyed a bundle of other shows during June

and we are delighted to bring you photos from some of

these events.

The Tractor Run through Houston was a delight with a huge

variety of tractors from all the eras. Kilmacolm CC’s Jubilee

Summer Fete was very popular. Houston Agricultural Show

saw large numbers of people visiting on a lovely sunny day.

Bridge of Weir Gala Day, Lochwinnoch Gala Day and Lilias

Day’s Party in the Park weren’t so lucky with the weather,

but that didn’t stop the crowds turning up to support the

parades and enjoy the attractions.

We went to print before the Kilbarchan Show and

Howwood Fete took place, but hope that these were

equally successful.

So what’s still to come for July? There’s Sma’ Shot Day and

Bricklive Fantasy Kingdom in Paisley, the West Renfrewshire

Young Farmers Car Treasure Hunt, lots of summer holiday

activities at RSPB and Muirshiel and the Scottish Arts &

Crafts Fair at Geilsland Country Estate at Beith.

Three Sisters Theatre bring us ‘9 to 5 The Musical’, KDS

are auditioning for their Christmas Panto, ‘King Arthur –

The Panto’ by Archie Wilson, and we’ve also heard that

Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group will be

back at the end of the year with their panto,

Cinderella!

It’s all great local news!

The Un Hor

The history of Paisley and Renfrewshire is vast, and plays an interesting

and important part in the development of Scotland. From the arrival of

the wandering preacher Mirin in the 6th Century to the arrival of Walter

Fitz Alan and establishment of the Priory of Paisley in 1163, through to the

latest developments in Paisley and Renfrewshire, the County has a wealth

of heritage to explore.

Join the Urban Historian on

a series of talks and walks

in the coming months, one

of which is the Kilbarchan

Heritage Walk on Saturday

16th July at 1pm.

Kilbarchan was once one

of many weaving villages,

and at one time there were

around 800 handlooms in

the village. One cottage named the “Weavers Cottage” built in 1723 has

been conserved by the National Trust for Scotland with weaving still in

operation, and guides demonstrate handloom weaving to visitors.

Discover the medieval and later history of Kilbarchan, meeting outside

the Weaver’s Cottage and beginning the walk at the foot of Church Street

before exploring the religious and textile heritage of the village.

Tickets are £5.00 and available, along with details of other events, at

https://www.theurbanhistorian.co.uk/

John Houston, another Kilbarchan Linen Merchant

The name Houston is one of the oldest family surnames in Kilbarchan

dating back to the early 1600s. John Houston, the Kilbarchan linen

merchant, married Margaret Naismith from Lochwinnoch Parish in

1750 and had nine children. He was a leaseholder in the village with

houses and a yard in Merchant Close, and in his later years lived in Old

Hall in Shuttle Street.

John Houston’s linen manufactory in Kilbarchan was established in

or before 1755 when he bought the land adjacent to the Barbours’

Auchinames Bleachfield. By 1779 some of his weavers were working in

silk, producing quality silk gauze for export to Dublin. He was extolled

as one of the principal manufacturers in the village and a ‘Dublin

Merchant’ by Semple in 1782.

Like other of the Kilbarchan merchants, John Houston had business

interests apart from the textile trade. He owned a large brewery in

Kilbarchan. When the linen industry in Kilbarchan was in decline in the

1780s, John Houston must have felt the need to increase his income

or consolidate his capital. In 1786 he placed an advert in the Glasgow

Mercury - ‘To be let at Kilbarchan – a brewery and malthouse with every

article necessary for carrying on the business, in good condition’ and

a ‘large new still to be sold’. It is not known if a subsequent letting

arrangement, or the sale of the still, took place.

Rather than concentrate on his Irish interests, John Houston entered into

partnership with a Paisley manufacturer in 1789. This newly established

Paisley firm, Dundas Smith & Co., specialised in plain and embroidered

muslins. The business had a factory in Paisley and employed weavers,

warpers, winders, tambourers (embroiderers) and clippers. From 1790

and until 1802 Dundas Smith & Co. marketed their goods in England

and exported cotton and linen goods to Jamaica. John Houston lived

to a ripe old age. In 1807 he was described as ‘about 87; quite agile and

strong; can walk to Paisley and return as cleverly as a man of twenty’.

Sunday 16th July - One for the bucket list?

Our Bungee Jump offers an extremely exciting day out! Crane

Bungee 160ft from the Riverside Museum, Glasgow - raise much

needed funds for the Hospice.

As you travel the 160ft height, you will enjoy views of the surrounding

areas including Glasgow Harbour. As you reach the top, you will have

a few seconds to prepare before hearing the famous countdown

Dog in Sr

rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/

seasonal/summer/dogs

• Never leave dogs in hot cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans

on a warm day (even if only for a short while). When it’s 22°C outside,

temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C inside, which can be fatal.

• Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed skin, such as the tips of their ears

and nose, to avoid sunburn. This is especially important if your dog has

white or light-coloured fur, as they can be very vulnerable to getting burnt.

If you’re unsure which is the right product to use, please ask your vet.

• Ensure pets always have access to shade and fresh drinking water

to help keep them cool.

• Check every day for flystrike - this can be fatal.

• Put ice cubes into your dog’s water bowl or make some tasty ice

cube treats. You could also freeze a kong with treats and water!

• Give your pet damp towels to lie on (never place a damp towel over

your dog as this can trap in heat) or an ice pack wrapped in a towel.

• If you’re planning a day out with your dog, check before leaving

home whether dogs are allowed. If they’re not, arrange a pet-sitter or

choose another, dog-friendly attraction.

• Groom them regularly - this can

help brush away any dead or excess

hair, leaving your dog with a less

dense coat - much better for

staying cool!

• Dogs may also appreciate a

paddling pool to splash around

in, although not all dogs like

water, so there’s no

need to force them if

they don’t want to!

A Charity, a Book, and a Poet

Kilmacolm resident, Johnny Woods (pictured) has surprised himself

by developing an interest in poetry, and further surprised himself by

publishing Sentimental Fool, his first poetry collection.

In May, he successfully launched his book at an evening of poetry

and music at Websters in Glasgow. Money raised by the sale of the

book is going to the Inverclyde mental health charity, MindMosaic

Counselling and Therapy, of which he is a trustee.

Bill Bell, Professor of English Literature at Cardiff University, says of

Sentimental Fool… ‘Johnny Woods is neither a sentimentalist nor a

fool, but his poetry is capable of inducing laughter and tears in equal

measure’.

So, if you like poetry, or want to support MindMosaic (or both), you can

purchase the book for £10 at Etoile, 1 Market Place, Kilmacolm (thank

you Etoile! ) or contact Johnny directly. Email jonathan.pwoods@

Clyde Valley Flyers Fun Fly

Although they might be more properly named the Gryffe Valley Flyers, to celebrate 50

years of activity the Clyde Valley Flyers model flying club held a Jubilee Fun Fly at their

flying site between Kilmacolm and Greenock on the 29th of May and were blessed with

decent weather for once. There was a fair turnout of flyers both from the club and from

clubs elsewhere in Scotland. After a morning of general flying and a lunchtime barbecue

there was a hotly contested simulated carrier deck spot landing competition won by Simon

McNeill from the Ayrshire club while the clubs’ own Stephen Semple won the concours with

his amazing Fairey Gannet scale model. Marking the 50 years, Colin Sparrow demonstrated

a collection of flying machines dating back that far. The event was deemed a success

marking both the club’s anniversary and a start to what we hope is a return to a normal flying

season after the disruption of the previous two years.

While computer gaming seems to have largely supplanted model plane flying for

youngsters it is undoubtedly popular as an absorbing and sociable pastime for the recently

retired with flying taking place most days when there is reasonable weather. Radio control

model flying has never been more affordable and while it is more difficult to learn than it

may first appear, the club has training facilities for new members and anyone interested in

taking up the hobby should look up the Clyde Valley Flyers website and get in touch with

us. www.membermojo.co.uk/cvfmac

SATURDAY 27TH AUGUST - SUNDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER

We are pleased to

announce the dates

of the Largs Viking

festival will be Saturday

27th Aug – Sunday 4th

Sept

We are hopeful that we

will be able to bring

you a full-scale battle

plan, including all

our festival favourites

such as the opening parade and ceremony, live entertainment, fringe

events, food and craft market, air displays, axe throwing, full Viking

village and ever popular Festival of Fire, with fire procession. As well

as the Viking skirmish, burning of the long boat, entertainment, and

ending in a fabulous firework display.

Our Story

Started in 1980, this Annual Festival marks

the 1263 Battle of Largs, the last mainland

battle between the Scots and Norse.

Each year the living history Viking Village is open to the public so that

they can get a glimpse of what life would have been like in a 13th

Century Viking Village.

Come and talk to them about their way of life; learn about how they

made their clothes, weapons, jewellery and food. Ask the Vikings

about their religion, beliefs, homes, crafts, ships, their homeland and

why they left it.

Wow! Thank you, Bridge of Weir! You broke all records again for funds

raised for Christian Aid.

During Christian Aid Week in May we were able to do some house-to-house collections using the

traditional red envelope. We also had a dedicate Bridge of Weir “e-envelope” for direct online donations

to Christian Aid. And there were church activities such as a “Big Brekkie” and a retiring collection. Total

donations made during Christian Aid Week came to over £4,460.

This years’ stars were definitely the three 12-year-old boys from the Boys Brigade who eagerly volunteered

to do the “Glasgow Kiltwalk” at the end of April to raise funds for Christian Aid. The boys raised more than

£2,000 in donations and, as I had to accompany them, I managed to raise nearly £1,000.

It gets even better because many of you took the trouble to fill out a “gift aid” form when making your

Christian Aid Week donations, this will lead to a further £750 going to Christian Aid and the Hunter Foundation

provided a 50% top-up for all funds raised during the Kiltwalk. Including the gift aid bonus and the Hunter

Foundation top-up, the total funds raised for Christian Aid this year reached an amazing £10,000.

So, huge thanks are due to the BB boys, all the volunteers from St Machar’s Ranfurly Church and Freeland

Church, and to the members of St Mary’s Church who held a retiring collection, but most of all, thanks are

due to you for your generous donations.

For over 70 years, Christian Aid has been fighting poverty and the causes of poverty. It supports people of all

faiths and none. To find out more about Christian Aid’s aims, activities and beliefs go to the web site (www.

Milr R ac un!

After an absence of three years, the Millport Raft Race returns to the island on Saturday 13th August 2022.

It is planned to kick off at 12noon (approx) starting at Kames Bay and finishing at Millport Harbour.

Application forms are available from Saturday 18th June from Gail Murphy at Pots and Pets (https://www.

facebook.com/Pots-Pets-1752122638399866/) with a suggested donation of £5 per person. There will also

be a fundraiser held on the Saturday night in aid of Girlguiding Millport and local youth groups.

Bonnie Bishopton is making a huge difference

in the village and I hope you have noticed the

colourful planters and the flower beds around

the community centre and the library. Lots more to come from

them I am sure. All thanks to Brighter Bridge of Weir for leading

the way.

I have set up a blog page and this can be found on www.

cllrjmaclaren.blogspot.com where I will post my reports to

community councils and other relevant material. Do let me have

your feedback on these.

Parking continues to be a problem outside Coast Restaurant in

Langbank and I have had a number of meetings about this which

hopefully will bear some fruit. Speeding is a problem which affects

all the villages and some Driver Feedback Signs will be deployed for

a period in a number of spots within the Ward. A few people have

shown interest in forming a Speed Watch group however whereas

before we could be lent a speed camera, now we are being told

that we need to buy this. This cost is not insurmountable and a

grant could very probably be obtained for this. If you would like

to be part of this then please let me know and if enough people

come forward then we can form a recognised group.

Please feel free to contact me with any of your concerns and I am

happy to meet with you at a mutually convenient time.

The brand new committee worked hard to put Gala Day together, and their hard

work paid off handsomely. The day could have been a literal washout this year

due to the terrible weather. A number of stall-holders didn’t turn up, and several

left because they needed something approaching good weather to “do their

thing”! However the entertainment from St Columba’s Pipe Band, Port Glasgow

BB Marching Band, Dancewest Scotland and the Gail Ashley School of Dance

was brilliant, as was Graham Donald our magnificent DJ!

The local councillors led and judged the parade, and opened the gala day. All

of the parade entrants were terrific, special mention to our prize winners - Eva,

Mahammed, Hammed, Ross and Alexis who all won ice cream vouchers courtesy

of Ice Mania. The Beavers, Rainbows and Brownies all won £50 for their group

effort. The restaurant raffle was a huge success, and 12 tickets won vouchers for

takeaways, meals, coffee and cake and a hamper from several of the restaurants

in the village - a special thanks to them for their generosity. Several businesses in

the village sponsored aspects of the day, including Gibb Stuart, Corum, Beaton

Brothers, Visiting Angels and Affluent Financial Planning.

Without all of the above the gala day wouldn’t have gone as well as it did.

However special thanks must go to our wonderful villagers who supported the

day. Hopefully next year the rain will remember that we don’t want it on gala

day!!

On Friday 3rd June members of the Village and Community Councils

gathered to celebrate the planting of a flagpole cherry tree kindly

donated by Gryffe Valley Rotary Club. Longtime village resident Dr

Morag McCallum completed the planting with the final trowel full of

soil. Those present then adjourned to the Village Hall where tea and

royal themed home baking was on offer.

The village Summer Social made a welcome return on Sunday 5th

June after an absence of three years. An excellent turnout enjoyed

jugs of Pimm’s and other liquid refreshments in the summer sunshine

along with strawberries and cream. We were particularly pleased to

be able to welcome our new neighbours from Weirs Wynd to the first

major village event since the lifting of Covid restrictions.

The proposed Stewart Milne development of new

homes along the western edge of Barochan Road,

Houston is now out for public consultation by the

developer. The housing application is at the pre-application stage.

Once a formal planning application is lodged, formal representations

of your views can be submitted to the council planning department.

In general terms, I’m aware of concerns about the impact on local

infrastructure and services of housing developments and also about

the relative lack of smaller properties and affordable housing in

Houston, Crosslee, Brookfield and Linwood. I will read the developer

consultation plans for this proposed development with keen interest.

You can make your views known by visiting barochanroadplanning.

co.uk. The website will be available to view between 6th June and

1st July. A live consultation day will also take place on 16th June,

between 2pm and 7pm, via the ‘live chat’ section of this website with

members of the project team available to answer questions.

On the first anniversary of the tragic death of 13-year-old William

McNally, his family paid tribute to him in a touching video that aims

to make all young people aware of the dangers of swimming in

open waters. The video can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/

watch?v=GpfahOzR7X0. William passed away on 5th June last year

after getting into trouble in the water at the Clay Pits in Linwood,

part of the River Gryffe, while swimming with friends. Renfrewshire

Council responded to the tragedy by placing seven new GPS signs at

potentially dangerous areas along the River Gryffe as part of a drive to

improve the safety of all waterways in Renfrewshire. The GPS signage

also includes a life buoy, a throw-line rope and a reminder that people

shouldn’t swim in the river. A new water safety policy has also been

adopted by the council which will continue to review and tackle water

safety issues. In memory of William and all those who have lost their

lives in our waterways.

Over the last month I was pleased to attend

two Platinum Jubilee community events in my

ward, firstly, a Platinum Jubilee Tea organised

by Linwood Community Council, and secondly, Brookfield’s Lark

in the Park, organised by Brookfield Village Hall Committee. Both

were blessed with wonderful weather and both communities really

enjoyed themselves. Many media commentators made the point that

a Platinum Jubilee is a unique event which is unlikely to happen for a

long time so I am glad these local events were memorable.

I am very concerned about issues arising from the prospective

planning application by Stewart Milne for the Barochan Road site

in Houston. This is not yet a live planning application but more a

preliminary look at general issues of concern. I am clear that I have

substantial concerns about the impact on school catchment areas, the

pressure on local infrastructure, and the effects on traffic congestion.

By the time of publication I have been strongly assured by Barratts

that they will have the lights at the Weirs Wynd development repaired,

which will be a great step forward for driver confidence along the

Bridge of Weir Road and for pedestrian safety. My only regret is that it

took Barratts so long to honour their commitment to the residents of

Weirs Wynd and to Renfrewshire Council.

It is a pleasure to be writing my first update to you all

as a newly elected councillor for the Houston, Crosslee

and Linwood ward. It is the absolute honour of my life

to be a local councillor for these villages, I love our wee

part of the world and want to look after it.

I said it on my election material and I will repeat it here, I am not your

typical cardboard cutout of a politician. I say that because I mean it. I’m

just a local guy from Renfrewshire that wants to help people and the

community, nothing more and nothing less.

I am looking forward to meeting with all the community councils, local

groups, organisations, charities and as many people in the area as

possible over the coming months. I want to see how your work, creativity,

priorities, and ideas for our community can complement my own work

within Renfrewshire Council.

A splendid sunny day on Saturday 4th June saw

a welcome return of the Houston Agricultural

Show.

The show was heralded in by the second year of

our free Tractor Run, on Friday 27th May. Village

residents lined the streets wearing their wellies to wave at

a cavalcade of tractors..

The event showcases the very best of agricultural livestock and horses, local businesses as

well as talented crafters and performers. It was a super family day out suitable for ages 0-109

years (Houston’s very own Marion Dawson being the long-living person in Scotland!)

Sav Dat:

Saturday 3rd

Every year the entries to the Baking and Craft show dazzle the judges and delight the visitors to the tent. Of

course, this year saw some special categories to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

Champion of Champions - Dairy Cow bred by Kerr Scott and family With light horses and ponies, mighty Clydesdales, cattle and

sheep and then a dressing up competition with horses and

their owners, such fun costumes. Our Champion of Champion

in the Livestock entries was selected by our show Chairman

Tom Stewart and went to Kerr Scott with his home bred dairy

cow.

The Houston’s Got Talent Stage welcomed some super

singing, gymnastics, sword dancing with our ultimate winner

being Clementine MacDougall (7 years old) playing the fiddle!

The stalls looked terrific, offering a fabulous selection of delicious treats, candles, crafts, soaps and flowers.

Community spirit is always in abundance and we are always glad to have representatives from West Renfrewshire

Young Farmers and the Gryffe Rotary in attendance.

Did you make a Moovin’ milkshake, pet a Larchgreen alpaca or learn a farming fact from RHET (The Royal

Highland Education Trust)? Hospitality was in demand with the Rollin Pig and Houston Inn having to replenish

stocks due to the outstanding turnout.

So many good boys and girls participated in our Dog Show. The well-groomed pups drew a crowd as they

paraded, showed their skills, and wagged their tails. Definitely 12/10!

The competitive spirit was high all-day culminating in the super-charged showdown of the Tug-of-War. The

Houston & Killellan Agricultural Society Committee were the ultimate Champion of Champions!

A huge thank you to our guest judges and special thanks also to our Show Secretary Mo Lyle who organises all

the moving parts on show day! What a woman.

If you have any feedback, we would like to hear from you. We are always looking for more help and plenty of show

day suggestions. To enquire about joining the committee please email: houstonshow@hotmail.co.uk.

With special thanks to our Programme Advertisers and a huge thanks to our 2022 Show Sponsors: WRC Recycling,

Houston Farms, Abbey Vet Group, The Malcolm Group & Who’s Town Band.

I had the chance to get along to the Houston Agricultural Show recently.

Well done to everyone involved in putting on a smashing wee day out

for families in Houston and beyond. The realities we all faced during the

pandemic have made events such as this even more appreciated and

long may they continue.

I will finish off by saying thank you to each and every person that went out

and voted on 5th May for myself and my running mate Cllr Audrey Doig.

No matter how you voted we are here to represent everyone in the area to

the best of our ability so please feel free to get in touch at any time.

A great day was had by all at Kilbarchan Lilias Day despite the wet and

windy start to the day!

It was wonderful to see so many people come out to support the event and enjoy the day. Our

aim was to celebrate our return with a party in the park and we certainly did that! The event

kicked off with Habbie (Eden Dickie) and Miss Lilias (Amber Kissell) leading a mini parade

into the park. A dance display by Gillian Whyte school of dance, a mini highland hustle, music

from SambaYaBamba, and ceilidh music from Clamjamffrie got the crowds dancing whilst

the Battle of Kilbarchan commenced with Britannia XIV.

The Gateside Place crew retained their status as Tug of War champions and Bridge of Weir

primary won the local football derby against Kilbarchan Primary.

The prize for the best decorated house went to the Coutties of Milliken Drive and the best

scarecrow to the Downs’ of Steeple Square.

We’ve lots of good photos on our Facebook but here’s a few

favourites! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.5513

Senior Citizens Afternoon Tea

On 7th of June Howwood Community Council held our first afternoon tea

since before the pandemic for our Senior Citizens at The Midton Bowling

Club. Although it was held indoors, the sun shone on a beautiful summers

day and helped create a brilliant atmosphere.

It was very well attended by about 40 Howwood residents and it is fair to

say that all of us enjoyed the afternoon, full of sandwiches, an assortment

of cakes donated by The Boarding House, tea, coffee, soft drinks and

loads of blethers!

Great to see and hear!

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the appearance of the children’s

choir from Howwood Primary School who sang some great songs from a

few years gone by, adding to the party feel of the afternoon.

Our oldest villager, Peggy Moore, had just celebrated her 95th birthday.

Peggy was born in Howwood and has lived in and been very much a part

of the village ever since. As our “Queen For The Day”, she was presented

with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of us all by Coire Watkins, the youngest

of the talented youngsters from the school.

Hopefully, the day marked a welcome return to the times of meeting

up and friendship we have all enjoyed in the past - with many more to

come.

Thanks to all who made it possible from all sides of our community.

Hello everyone - I would like to take this opportunity to

introduce myself. My name is Chris Gilmour and, along

with my colleague Gill Graham, I was recently elected to serve as Local

Councillor within Ward 9 Johnstone North, Kilbarchan,Howwood and

Lochwinnoch. I have previously served as a Renfrewshire Councillor for

the period 2012 until 2017 representing Ward 8 which was Johnstone

North, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch. Having been away for five years it’s

great to be back and I am committed to ensuring Ward 9 has a strong

voice in Renfrewshire House.

I have been attending Community Council meetings since my election

and by the time you read this I with have attended all four CC.’S in the

ward and will have also attended Lochwinnoch Gala Day and Lillias Day

in Kilbarchan.

Over the summer period I shall be out and about in the Ward - please do

not hesitate to stop me for a chat. More formally I can be contacted on the

During the recent council elections one of the

key issues often raised on the doorsteps, both in

Johnstone and in the Villages, was the worry that

residents had about the current cost of living crisis and how it will

impact on their families. During the pandemic all political parties

pulled together for the common good, and with that example in

mind I have signed a Confidence and Supply arrangement with the

current administration to promote the key objectives of supporting

Renfrewshire residents to tackle the cost of living crisis in the shortterm,

and to restore the manufacturing sector across Renfrewshire in

the long-term.

This will provide greater stability for the Council to meet the ongoing

crisis and means in practical terms that I will support the administration

on votes of confidence and on annual budgets, but with the caveat

that the annual budgets continue to promote fair funding for the five

towns in Renfrewshire, and that investment continues in our village

communities like Lochwinnoch as it did from 2017/22. On all policy

issues I remain free to challenge the current administration and have

been elected the Convener of the Audit, Risk, and Scrutiny Board,

which heads up the opposition efforts to scrutinise the performance

of the administration.

Surgery Details: I have no face to face surgeries in July,.

I am delighted and honoured to have been elected

at the recent Local Council Elections to represent the

people of Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood

and Lochwinnoch. Throughout the campaign I had the opportunity

to speak to residents and to hear your concerns as well as your

aspirations for you and your family. Many residents have told me they

want the Council to get the basics right and focus on the priorities that

matter. Including the current cost-of-living crisis, anti-social behaviour,

speeding traffic, the state of our roads and pavements, the need to

maintain village bus services and protection of the green belt. I will

continue to focus on these issues and will be a strong and passionate

voice for local people over the coming 5 years.

In my new role as Labour Group Spokesperson on Education and

Children’s Services, I’ll use my professional experience to challenge

proposed cuts to Education funding and demand investment to

improve the outcomes and opportunities for our young people.

Since the May election I have had the opportunity to meet with local

groups and Community Councils as well as individual constituents. I

look forward to getting to know you more over the coming months.

If you have new ideas and projects to improve your local area, please

let me know. I would also encourage you to apply to the Council’s

Villages Investment Fund. Application forms can be requested via:

rcgrantapplications@renfrewshire.gov.uk. Cllr Chris Gilmour and I

will be arranging local surgeries where we can meet residents face to

face. Details will be published very soon. If I can be of assistance or

you would like me to meet, please feel free to contact me.

The Kilmacolm Summer Fete was

held as part of HM Diamond Jubilee

Celebrations took place on 5th June

in glorious sunshine at Birkmyre Park.

The event was very well attended and

had various activities for children and

adults including races and a keenly

contested tug of war. Thanks are given

to the Gail Ashley School of Dance

and the St Columba’s Pipe Band

for their performances. Kilmacolm

Civic Trust, Gryffe Rotary, Kilmacolm

Primary School, The Cross Café, St

Columba’s School and the local Scout

group all contributed to the afternoon

with various activities and stalls. Our

thanks to them for all their hard work.

Councillor David Wilson was an able

MC for the afternoon proceedings.

The KCC is giving consideration to

making the fete an annual event.

The Platinum Jubilee was a wonderful weekend

with the village at its best. There were many teas and

garden parties. The afternoon tea run by Jill Russell and the splendid

Outlook team in Kidston hall had 85 sitting down to a delightful

purvey. Anne McGown and Anne MacGregor entertained us with

community singing and a history quiz. The Lord Lieutenant Colonel

Peter McCarthy and myself spoke briefly with the Lord Lieutenant

appropriately leading us in a rendition of The Queen.

At the end of May we had a visit from the Duke and Duchess of

Cambridge to St Johns Primary school in Port Glasgow. The visit

was a great success and I am told that Kate was the star of the show

“quite outstanding with the children, best I have seen” said an Officer

present. Councillors were in Purdah.

Cala Homes have indicated their intention to apply for planning

permission for 100 homes on the site known as the Police Station

field. I do not see it as consistent with the Local Plan. On reflection we

should all have supported the St Columba’s extension and latterly a

relief car park on this location.

The footway in West Glen Road from High Street to Lodge Park has

been resurfaced. The corrugated road outside Westfield and West

Glen will be dug up and redone. This was caused by Scottish water

and they are paying us to fix the problem. This is due the 2/3rd July.

The Kilmacolm and Port Glasgow Agricultural Show was back after

3 years. The weather was kind and I cannot ever remember the car

park being full. A great day out was a credit to the Show and Ladies

Committees who had worked really hard to put on a great occasion

enjoyed by all.

Our pipe band is competing in the United Kingdom Championships

in Lurgan Northern Ireland and we wish them well. They were star

attractions at the fete and the cattle show.

I met, in my Chair of the Operations Committee role at SPT, with the

MD of McGills Buses. Bus patronage is down substantially in the West

Of Scotland and of particular concern locally are the X7 and the 530.

I believe that the X7 will recover over the summer but the 530 is in a

critical condition. There are some 400 loyal customers who use this

service over a week , to shop at the Retail Park ,visit Port Glasgow and

travel to work in the village. I will fight for its retention but I am afraid

we are close to “use it, or lose it”.

I am pleased to report that at the statutory meeting

on 19th May I was appointed Leader of the Council

for the fifth time. This is a great honour and I thank my fellow Councillors

for the confidence they have shown in me once again. Independent

Councillor Drew McKenzie, who represents the neighbouring ward

of Inverclyde East Central, was appointed Provost.

Following the publication of Scottish Government’s spending review

at the end of May it clear that Inverclyde, in common with all other

Councils in Scotland, is going to face an extremely challenging

financial climate over the next five years. The Scottish Government

is planning real terms cuts to our funding each year over this period.

This will require many difficult decisions to be made on service

levels, jobs, charges for service and Council Tax. The challenge is

compounded by the current high level of inflation for many of the

goods and services the Council purchases.

Congratulations and well done to Kilmacolm Community Council

and others who assisted in the organisation of the village fete as part

of the Council’s Meliora Festival and to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum

Jubilee. There was a very good turnout on the day, helped, no doubt,

by the fabulous weather.

I met Council Offers and a local resident on-site at Leperstone

Avenue, regarding the problems with dog walkers, to discuss what

can be done to address this issue. Officers are currently considering

what action can be taken. In the meantime I would appeal to people

who use this trail to park further away so as not to inconvenience local

residents or better still leave the car at home if you live nearby.

Surgeries: No surgery this month due to the holiday period.

Abbey Nursery

Over the past few weeks we have been learning all about the Royal family,

Princes’ and Princesses, familiar Royal buildings including Buckingham

Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral Estate and the famous Lion statues

situated outside of Buckingham Palace. We have been developing our

STEM skills re-creating these, adding guards and looking at different

mathematical terms such as non-standard measurement and patterns.

We celebrated the Platinum Jubilee with a Jubilee Party on Thursday at the

Nursery consisting of multiple bouncy castles, afternoon teas, tuff trays, arts and

crafts, role play opportunities, decorations, crown competitions and more.

The children and staff had a fantastic time and we hope that you all had a

lovely long weekend also!

We begin our Summer Programme soon with a variety of experiences

throughout themed weeks. The children will be taking part in some of

the following: Hawaiian Week, Disney, Space, Science and Nature and will

keep you updated on our Summer Fun progress.

Bridge of Weir Primary

Reading and writing awards for Bridge of Weir

pupils!

It’s been an exciting few months for Bridge of Weir Primary

School as we have scooped up several prestigious awards

for reading and writing.

First up is Lana from P6/5 who won the Junior category

of the Rotary Club’s Young Writer competition at

local, regional AND national level. It is an incredible

achievement to come first in the whole country! Lana has

been presented with her prize and trophy which is well

deserved for such a talented writer. This is the first time

the Gryffe Valley Rotary Club has had a national winner, so

they are delighted.

Congratulations also to Eilidh from P5a winner of the

local junior level and runner up at regional level as her

writing was highly commended. This too is a fantastic

achievement.

From writing to reading and we also have a winner in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. Taylor, from p6/5, is the winner of the ‘Pupil Reading the

Most Books’ category. He has read a mixture of paper books and myON audiobooks and has committed to doing the Accelerated Reader quizzes. He

has won a wonderful selection of prizes.

And finally, we are so excited and proud to announce that we are now a ‘Reading School’ and have won the GOLD award from Scottish Book Trust. Our

feedback stated:

“It was an absolute joy reading about all of the amazing things happening at Bridge of Weir Primary- you should all be incredibly proud of

yourselves!”

This has taken a lot of work so we would like to thank everyone. Thank you to everyone in the school, at home, and in the wider community for making

reading something we do for pleasure. Special thanks to the ‘Bookworms’ Reading Leadership Group who have planned and organised, encouraged

and influenced us to becoming a reading school.

It has been a blast!

Summer’s Arrived at St Columba’s

Inclusion Week

The week beginning 6th June saw both the Junior and Senior School

celebrating Inclusion Week with assemblies, talks, and social media

posts discussing different aspects of inclusion, such as mental health and

neurodiversity.

Thursday 9th was St Columba’s Day and, for the third year, we marked the

day by completing a sponsored walk in aid of a local charity. This year we

chose to combine St Columba’s Day and Inclusion Week and raise money

to support the charity “I Am Me”.

Inclusion Week is the beginning of a year-long awareness raising initiative,

which will see us creating a St Columba’s Inclusion Pledge. The Pledge

will help us become more mindful of our diverse community and the

needs of individuals, with the aim of making our school an even more

safe, positive and all-embracing place to learn and work.

Keep your eyes peeled on our social media accounts for more

information.

Summer Holiday Club

With the summer holidays rapidly approaching, we’ve got something to

keep the little ones entertained.

Our Summer Holiday Club is on throughout July and runs from 9am to

5pm each weekday (10am - 4pm for core hours) at Junior School.

The team have lots of exciting activities planned, including parkour, stage

combat, arts and crafts, and much, much more.

The Summer Holiday Club is open to all children who were in Junior 1-6

(P1-6) during the 2021/22 academic year. You do not have to be a St

Columba’s family to make use of this service – the more, the merrier!

To find out more and book your place, email holidayclubs@st-columbas.org

Make sure to follow along on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

accounts to find out more.

If you are considering a Columban education for your child, email

Houston Primary School

Primary 7 pupils had an amazing five day trip away to Loch Insh. They have

returned with a wealth of experience of water sports, with the favourites

being wind surfing, raft building and paddle boarding. On dry land the

pupils enjoyed tubing, archery and bushcraft. A great time was had by all.

A huge thank you to the staff who accompanied the children.

New Entrants - The nursery pupils who will be joining us in August to start

Primary 1, have been invited to a Treasure Hunt with Mrs Johnston. They

will also have Play & Snack sessions, sample a school lunch and meet some

of the Primary 1 teachers. We look forward to getting to know them.

Supporting Ukraine - Have you spotted us? Well done to P6/5 and

Miss McCafferty for their wonderful singing talents in support of the

people of Ukraine. Hundreds of children in Renfrewshire came together

virtually to sing, ‘Let it go’. Well done to everyone #letitgoameila

Eco News - Each class has been bringing in plastic bottles and aluminium

cans for recycling. Mrs Morrison, our wonderful Gardening Granny and

her team have been collecting them from the school and taking them to

Sainsbury’s to receive monetary vouchers in return. These vouchers are

then used to purchase seeds, compost etc., for our Gardening Club.

Gardening Club - Our Gardening Club set each class a challenge to

decorate a planter and fill it with spring bulbs. Now that the bulbs have

bloomed our judges, Mrs Morrison and Mrs Farquhar have chosen the

winning planter. This year’s winner is Primary 5/4. Please see our school

Eco Blog for photographs.

P7 Transition - Our Primary 7 pupils, have engaged in their transition

programme to their chosen secondary school. They have met with some

of their new teachers and engaged in very many learning experiences.

To celebrate the end of their time at Houston Primary School, P7 have planned

a Beach BBQ, instead of a traditional school dance. Lots of fun ahead!

Rotary Club Winners - P5 and P7 pupils entered the Rotary Club’s

Young Writer Competition. Some talented pupils received gift vouchers

to the value of £25. They were absolutely delighted to have their talents

recognised.

Duchal Nursery

It’s been a busy time at Duchal as the summer term flies by.

We had an amazing time at our first summer outing for a few years, which

started off with great excitement with the arrival of the big bus that then

took us on a wonderful journey to Helensburgh and to the marvellous

Fruin Farm.

The children had a fabulous time as they were introduced to llamas, got

up close to some very woolly sheep followed by a spot of pond dipping,

where we discovered all sorts of creatures living in the water. To calm

things down we got creative as we painted animals inspired by what we’d

seen.

If you’ve not yet made it to Fruin Farm you must pay a visit, it is a wonderful

spot where you can see the farm animals or hold a special event.

There was an enthusiastic return of Sports Day with our young budding

athletes and their families getting fully immersed in all the races, (the

daddies race was as competitive as ever!!) as the sun shone across

Birkmyre Park. It was so nice to see so many families and friends gathered

together to enjoy this great occasion.

By the time you read this, term will be over and our young children

will have performed their hearts out at our Summer Concert, (they are

practising with gusto!) and we will be saying a fond farewell to our older

children who are now fully prepared for their next step as they move on to

a variety of primary schools across the local area. We wish them luck and

remember please pop back and visit to tell us all about it!

Finally a huge thank you to our wonderful teaching staff that make Duchal

the truly special nursery that it is. Wishing you all a relaxing summer.

New Entries to Duchal:

We now offer free pre school education for 3 – 5yr olds every day (during

term time) through the funded nursery scheme in conjunction with

Inverclyde Council, ensuring Duchal is available to all children in the local

area (including those living in Renfrewshire). Please get in touch for more

information, we are open daily 8am – 6pm, offering greater flexibility of care

for parents. Please visit our website for more information www.duchal.com

and find us on Facebook. If you would like to come and visit the Nursery

please get in touch on 01505 874358 or email: info@duchal.com

Kilmacolm Bowling Club Jubilee Celebrations

Kilmacolm bowling club celebrated Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee on Saturday

4th June with an open day and Wapinschaw. The day was a great success,

the club was adorned with balloons, bunting and flags, there was a large turn

out of both members and guests and the weather was fantastic. There was

also Prosecco and strawberry tarts to add to the royal flavour of the day, and a

toast to her majesty which was superbly written and delivered by club member

Alison Watson, all in all a great tribute, and a great day had by all.

Ranfurly Castle Muirhead Trophy Success

Sunday 5th June saw the Castle retain the Muirhead Trophy in

sensational style against our old neighbours Old Course Ranfurly

Golf Club.

A last gasp eagle, par, birdie when 3 down allowed Paul Mulligan and

Nic Patterson to salvage a draw and get the all-important half point to

secure the cigar box.

We hosted the after-dinner ceremony and shared some great stories

about the day’s golf. The final result Ranfurly Castle 6½ -OCRGC 5½.

A huge thanks to Captain Russell Johnstone and his team at OCRGC

for their sportsmanship throughout and making the afternoon special

as we basked in glorious sunshine on the terrace.

A fantastic result and one to cherish for another 12 months

The Gents Senior Individual Open Golf competition will take place on

Tuesday 26th July. Great course, great prizes, great fun!

Ranfurly Castle Ladies

May was a fairly busy month for the Ladies Section with competitions on

both Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Macmillan Cancer Stableford was played on both Wednesday 11th

and Saturday 14th of May with 24 ladies competing. The very windy

conditions on the Wednesday reduced the numbers playing but £100

was raised for this good cause. Helen Abram was the winner with 40

points and Louise Cooper was runner-up with 38 points.

Tuesday 17th May was the 9 hole Stableford and Eileen Rankin the winner

with 14 points. Wednesday 18th May was an Extra Medal as well as the

Medal Finals from 2021. Louise Cooper won the Silver Medal Final and

Morven McLeod won the Bronze.

The 19th of May was the first of the West Renfrewshire League matches.

6 Ladies travelled to Ralston Golf Club for the evening match which was

played in glorious weather. Sadly the home team had a very good win

over Ranfurly but the games were played in a very friendly manner and

enjoyed by all. The second match was played at Ranfurly Castle on 31st

May against Caldwell Golf Club. The conditions could have been very

wet but luckily the torrential rain on the horizon moved around us and

all games were completed dry. This was an overwhelming victory for

Ranfurly. Good luck to the team going forward for their next 2 matches.

On 25th May there was a Platinum Jubilee Celebration fun competition.

Unfortunately the weather was not what had been hoped for so the number

of holes played was reduced. Despite the wet and windy conditions the

40 ladies who played had great fun. The teams had been issued with a

piece of string which could be used once by each member of the team

to have a free shot, no longer than the length of the string. This should

have been simple, but not everyone remembered that they had the string

until it was too late! There were one or two other fun challenges as they

played. Everyone enjoyed a sumptuous afternoon tea in the club with

decorations of red, white and blue giving the finishing touch to the day.

The winning team consisted of Pamela MacKenzie, Rosemary Ogilvie and

Cynthia Keanie with 51 points.

On 8th June the weather once again won the battle and, due to torrential

rain, the Centenary Trophy was not played. Hopefully this fixture will be

rearranged and the sun will shine!

Kilmacolm Golf Club

We have been blessed with some wonderful golfing weather in recent

weeks, the course is in great condition, many thanks to the green keeping

team for their hard work and night time watering!

The course has been busy with players of all ages and abilities with

competitions to suit all or casual golf for the less competitive players.

The Gents Newton Shield team have got off to an excellent start having won

5 matches so far, with just 2 losses they are heading up the league and with

just 3 matches remaining will hopefully qualify for the semi-final stages.

The ladies Greenlees team had their first match rained off and are due to start

their campaign very soon, while the Junior Newton Shield team have won 2 and

lost one, with just one match to go. Good luck to all for the rest of the season.

Our Fryday Night Chippy nights have been proving very popular with

Neil serving up his fantastic fish and chips every other Friday with

option to eat in or take away. If you haven’t done so already make sure

to book in for the next one.

Friday nights also sees the return of our fun Friday foursomes, open to

all members of the club, this fun 10 hole competition is a fine way to

start the weekend and enjoy Neil’s fish and chips after your round!

We are looking forward to our Open competitions over the summer,

these are a great opportunity to play at Kilmacolm, there’s something for

everyone with Seniors, Gents, Ladies, Mixed and Junior events for more

information please go to our website: www.kilmacolmgolfclub.com

On 4th June Old Ranfurly Ladies section held their very popular Ladies Day competition. The dress option

this year was ‘Wear it Pink’ and many ladies were happy to oblige in support of Wear it Pink, one of our

charities this year. The other was for the Dystonia Society. The competition on Ladies day required lady

members to invite a partner to play in mixed greensomes. This was over 13 holes stroke play. The full days

play culminated in a 3 hole mumbo-jumbo fun competition. The course was in excellent condition and the

weather was glorious. 110 participants enjoyed a fun game of golf in the much welcomed warm sunshine.

Golfers could take advantage of the beer tent which was very David and Kay Skinner

much appreciated as golfing in the sunshine is thirsty work!! This was served by the club bar staff. After golf

Heather and Loiuse, our excellent catering team, were on hand for members to enjoy a post match BBQ

buffet in our newly refurbished club house. The winners of the Ladies Day trophy were Fiona McPhee our

lady captain and Russell Johnstone our club captain who were playing as a pair. Their score was an excellent

43net. Well done. The winners of the Mumbo-Jumbo competition were Linda Anderson and Derek Milne

with Fiona McPhee and Russell Johnstone congratulations to all. Our charities on the day raised £750 for

Dystonia and & £240 for Wear it Pink Breast Cancer Charity. A very successful day all round

Derek Milne, Russell Johnstone, Fiona

McPhee, Linda Anderson

The other June competition was the traditional Rosebowl. This was held on Sunday 12th June. It was a mixed

Stableford greensomes competition and open to members and guests. Once again there was a great turn

out for the club in spite of the inclement weather. It was played over 18 holes in often very stormy conditions. However it did not deter some excellent

scores The Rosebowl this year was won by David & Kay Kinner from Chester, their home club is Padeswood & Buckley golf club in Wales. Thank you to

everyone who came along and made the day both challenging and great fun.

Our next ladies competition is the ladies open on Thursday 7th July. It’s a four ball ladies greensomes competition and all entries are very welcome.

There are still some spaces so get your name in quickly if you wish to take part. There’s great prizes and we have participants from far and wide including

all the local golf clubs, also Helensburgh and Arran. Cost is £16 per couple. Make sure you book early as you don’t want to miss out. Thank you so much

to everyone who came along. Happy golfing to all!

A GROVE OF FOSSIL TREES IN GLASGOW’S VICTORIA PARK

This is a unique earth heritage site with eleven fossil

tree stumps from the Carboniferous Period. They are

about 330 million years old, and are preserved where they grew.

In late 1887 a path was cut as part of a new park through an old

disused roadstone quarry when the first of the fossil tree stumps was

uncovered.

Their uniqueness, rarity and importance was quickly recognised.

A building was quickly erected over the site – which is still there

today.

The site is owned by Glasgow City Council’s Parks Department.

The Fossil Grove Trust works with the Council to help present and

conserve the fossils and find new sources of funding to improve the

overall visitor experience.

Open days will be held during the summer, usually on the third

Sunday of the month, from 12pm to 4pm.

The Walk...

Cumbrae - Farland Point Walk

(Accessible)

by Rona Simpson

Difficulty: This is an accessible route that can be done by all. There is an all

abilities kissing gate at the Point which can facilitate wheelchair/mobility scooter

use (using a Radar Lock Key).

Starting Point: Millport Pier

Distance: 3.5 miles

Points of Interest: Fishing (if you like that kind of thing), the University Marine

Biological Station and great coastal views.

It’s the time of year that we

might be tempted to take

a wee trip doon the watter

or maybe o’er the watter to

the bonnie Isle of Cumbrae.

It is relatively easy to cycle

the 10miles of the Islands

circumference, but there

are also some great walking

routes if you want to explore

at a more sedate pace.

Begin this walk at the Old

Pier and from here follow

the esplanade along the

coast. You will pass the

Garrison House on your left

and the ‘well-kent’ face of

Crocodile Rock will be seen

on the right as you follow

the coastal path all the way

around Kames Bay. Take the

mainland is the deepest in Britain. Also visible is Hunterston Nuclear Power Station.

At the end of this stretch is the ruined Portencross Castle. From here is a spectacular

view of Ailsa Craig, the wee bump of an Island that is famous for its seabirds and

supplying granite from which to fashion curling stones.

Continue to follow the path towards to road and on the right and you will see the

Bridge of Weir Hillalker

Late May has seen the BoWers out on a walk

along Loch Lyon in Perthshire and a climb of

two Munros by Crianlarich.

The former involved some eight miles and

the mission was the Tigh nam Bodach Pagan

shrine in Gleann Caillich. Unfortunately the

fact that Mirren’s river was in full spate (not

very saint-like) meant that our team was

defeated by nature within sight of the target.

That weekend also saw a walk on the Rob Roy

way and a visit to the falls at Acharn.

The last weekend in May saw a small group

on the Cruach Ardrain, above Glen Falloch

and two went on to reach the summit of Beinn

Tulaichean as icing on the cake.

June will see trips to the Cobbler, Loch Ossian

(if there are any trains) and Glen Coe.

It is nice to see the warmer summer

weather and light nights here again.

This is the perfect time to get out and

enjoy the sunshine, and why not make

the most of this time by visiting us at

our reserve. You can come and walk

our beautiful woodland trails, look out

for butterflies and bees, and if you are

lucky, you may even spot damselflies and

dragonflies. At this time of the year the trails are full of beautiful

wildflowers which are an important food source for pollinators. We

have lots of summer migrants, swifts, swallows, house martins and

sand martins, look out for them performing their amazing feats of

aerial acrobatics. If you are interested in waterbirds why not visit our

Channel hide, where you be able to have an unobstructed view of

our new scrape. There you might be able to see our lapwings, blackheaded

gull, and Canada geese with goslings. If you are lucky, you

may spot osprey visiting our reserve. These magnificent birds can

sometimes be seen over the Aird Meadow, or you might even spot

an elusive otter, but all wildlife is amazing whatever you find!

We have a few upcoming events for July starting with our

Mindfulness in Nature Guided Walk on the 17th July. This will

be led by Martin Stepek who has over 20 years’ experience in

this field. We also have our Guided Pond - Dipping and Wildlife

Discovery event on the Saturday 9th July, both events must be

booked on – line. Our kids self-led events run all year. From 28th

June – 15th July it is our Super Summer Scavenger Hunt and from

the 16th-31st July it is Happy Hedgehogs, both events are self-led

and no booking is required. Our reserve shop continues to sell all

Clyde Muirshiel

The Ranger Service are continuing our seasonal wildlife surveying work around the Park, such as butterfly,

bumblebee and breeding bird surveys. With the help of the Estate Squad we have also been busy repainting

the benches and fences at Muirshiel, finishing off the upgrading of the waterfall path and edging

the car parks across the Park. We continue to deal with fire damage from disposable BBQs ; we always ask

visitors to remember the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which means be respectful of other Park users, the

landscape and wildlife, and to leave no trace. At this time of year we would like to ask dog walkers visiting

the Park to keep their dogs on lead or under close control in order to protect farm animals, ground nesting

birds and other sensitive wildlife.

The Duke of Edinburgh group volunteers have been helping with tree maintenance and Plantlife flower

surveys. We counted over 480 cowslips in the Johnshill field meadow in Lochwinnoch as part of a Europe

wide survey.

As part of Plantlifes No Mow May campaign we left areas of grass at Castle Semple and Muirshiel uncut.

The youth volunteers helped us count the flowers at each site. At Castle Semple we counted cuckoo flower,

cowslips, ox-eye daisy and 4 other species. At Muirshiel we only had one solitary daisy. Hopefully with

some management in the Autumn we shall boost the flower numbers in the future.

At Muirshiel the Castle Semple Conservation Volunteer group have been removing old tree tubes from

around the park and the Cample Burn area. At Castle Semple they have been controlling the growth of Fewflowered

leek Allium paradoxum an invasive plant, litter picking the far shore and carrying out path repairs.

We had a group of 5th year students from St Columba’s in Parkhill Wood at Castle Semple helping prune

the rhododendron maze and laying scalpings and whindust to re surface the paths up to the maze.

As part of Renfrewshire Council’s commitment to improve biodiversity in the area, a portion of the playing

field at the Lochwinnoch Annexe has been given over to growing native wildflowers. The ground near the

River Calder has had some turf scraped and built into embankments. Wildflower seed from a wet meadow

mix was sown and firmed into the scraped areas, with the help from the Primary 5 pupils from Lochwinnoch

Primary School. After some recent rain the wildflowers have started to germinate.

#327 August 2022: 13th July

Summer has finally arrived and for the volunteers at Kilbarchan Smile this

means that the work never stops. At the Gateway Community Garden

the vegetable planters are flourishing and the tatties are promising an

amazing crop this year. The garden is open Monday and Friday from 2pm-

4pm most weeks.

Throughout the village the areas we care for have burst into life and colour.

The Rose Garden and the Green at the Cross, Steeple Square Garden,

Traffic Lights Garden on Barn Green and the newly installed Mary Barbour

Garden on New Street are all cared for by our volunteers.

The dry Spring proved very challenging however, with trying to keep

everything watered and weeded, and we are always looking for new

volunteers to come and help with our various projects.

It is not all work though, we always have time for a wee break and a natter.

So if you want to enjoy the benefits of fresh air and a bit of company this

summer with the bonus of improving our community, drop us an email

at hello@kilbarchansmile.co.uk or text 07952 169341 we will welcome

whatever help you can manage.

Brighter Bridge Of Weir

LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER? HA!

At the time of writing, Sustrans started

work on the new access route from their

path to Main Street, opposite Livery Walk.

There will be significant disruption to the

area Brighter Bridge of Weir adopted and

transformed from a neglected, overgrown

and ugly site into a Woodland Garden. It

will take some time to recover and won’t

be very attractive this year. The summer

planting, however, is complete. There

was a delay as the plants we ordered were not ready at the usual time. Previously, we’ve had them delivered

all at once, but they came in two batches this year. The first batch arrived on 6th June, more than a week later

than usual. The second batch were those we intended for the barrier baskets on Main Street, between Torr

Road and Houston Road. Unfortunately, they did not arrive in time to be planted for the Gala Day parade.

Nevertheless, the volunteers achieved

everything else on time — re-stocking

the other 84 planters plus 9 other sites.

The rest of the summer we’ll spend

watering and keeping the plants healthy.

Pretty much what we’ll be trying to do for

ourselves, really.

If you would like to help Brighter Bridge

of Weir, please contact the Group via

email (secretary@brighterbridgeofweir.

org), www.brighterbridgeofweir.org,

Facebook, or call 07810 722806.

Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society

This month our Gardening Group will meet on Thursday 14th July in Freeland Church Hall at 8pm. We

will hold our own version of Gardeners’ Question Time - always an interesting evening now we have more

unusual weather conditions to contend with. Details will be confirmed on our Facebook page and flyers will

appear as usual, and members will receive information via the monthly e-letter. In June we visited Wraes, a

nearby garden and were able to catch up with the progress of this relatively new, evolving garden since our

last visit.

Gardeners enjoyed recent warm and sunny conditions which tied in with local and national events, but now

thoughts turn to low reservoirs and potential drought conditions. Established plants with good tap roots will

cope well, but bedding plants and shallow rooted shrubs will wilt - drooping leaves will indicate something

is wrong. Give an ailing plant a good soak and check it

later. Simplify watering by locating several water butts

and watering cans around the garden.

If you have been enthused by the “Tree of Trees” outside

Buckingham Palace and are considering planting a tree

for the Jubilee/The Queen’s Green Canopy, here are

some suggestions. Look for a tree which will block out

something unsightly but not too much sun, nor grow

too tall. Don’t plant too close to your boundary to avoid

new branches hanging over next door. Choose a small

tree which flowers in Spring and berries in Autumn

(Amelanchier, Crab Apple, Hawthorn, dwarf fruit trees and

Rowan) or try “Eucryphia” another wonderful smallish tree

– evergreen with white buttercup flowers in late summer.

Insects love Eucryphia so it hums with their activity. For

extra impact grow a Clematis up through your tree! Local

nurseries will have a selection of potted trees for smaller

gardens but don’t delay - demand will be high.

Have a garden problem? Join us on the 14th July.
