The Matrix Resurrections (R)

— The fourth installment of “The

Matrix” film franchise is available

once again on streaming for those who

missed its original premiere in December.

“Resurrections” takes place 60

years after the last film, following the

beloved duo of Neo (Keanu Reeves)

and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss),

whose memories, since their resurrections,

have been suppressed. Outside

of the Matrix, Bugs, captain of a hovercraft

called the Mnemosyne, recognizes

Neo in his suppressed form and

is able to extract him from the Matrix’s

grip, awakening his true memories and

identity. Now, with the help of Bugs

and her crew, Neo can help to free

Trinity and once again overcome the

mind-bending Matrix. Overall, this

installment maintains the essence of

the previous films while adding interesting

new characters and plotlines,

but it also has a lot of lighthearted,

comedic moments that, at times, feel

quite Marvel-esque. (HBO Max)

Eternals (PG-13) — Speaking of

Marvel-esque! As the 26th film in the

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU),

“Eternals” takes place in Phase Four

of the MCU, after the Avengers succeeded

in bringing back the missing

half of the population that Thanos

snapped away. Because of the population’s

return, the energy on Earth

brought on an apocalyptic astronomical

event called the emergence. The

only ones with knowledge of it are

10 superheroes, the Eternals, who

were brought to Earth in 5,000 B.C.

to ensure that the emergence happens.

After so many years on Earth that

fostered a great love for humankind,

the Eternals as a team now face great

inner conflict about doing what’s

right versus doing what they were

told. Hopefully, they’ll prevail in time

to save our planet! (Disney+)

Windfall (R) — This Netflix thriller

features a cast of three characters

who are never named, just described

by their general roles: CEO, Wife and

Nobody. Easy enough. CEO and Wife

enter their vacation home and quickly

discover a robber (Nobody), who

holds CEO and Wife hostage until he

receives $500,000 in cash. A battle of

mind games between the three characters

commences, until it’s impossible

to guess who will actually make

it out alive. Director Charlie McDowell’s

witty trio includes his own wife,

Lily Collins, as well as actors Jason

Segel (Nobody) and Jesse Plemons

a comedy-drama, this sex-positive

film is a bit of an eccentric watch, but

so charming that you can’t go wrong.

Host a Sidewalk Parade

for Fourth of July Fun

It's time for a sidewalk parade!

Whether it's on the Fourth of July, or

anytime all summer long, decorate

bikes, trikes, scooters, skates and wagons,

wear a funny hat and strike up the

band. A couple of families with a few

motivated kids is really all it takes to

make it happen. Gather kids of all ages

in your neighborhood, and get marching

to the beat of family fun and memory-making.

Here are some ideas to stage the

informal, high-spirited event:

Scale

Most of us diet and check

our weight, but the days of tall

scales sitting on a street corner

waiting for someone to put a

penny in the slot and step on the

scale are almost gone.

It was during the 1920s and

‘30s that coin-operated scales

were important. The first

pedestrian coin scales were

made in Germany in 1885,

and by 1889, the National

Scale Company was manufacturing

them in the United

States. In 1929, Peerless

Scale Company, the largest

in the U.S., was worth over

$50 million (much more if

you think in terms of 2022

dollars).

The pennies were enough. A

scale in a good location earned about

$1,000 a year. By the 1930s there

were new incentives to spend a penny.

The scale supplied a ticket with your

weight printed on it. The tickets added

fortunes, and people collected sets.

But the fad didn’t last and by the 1940s

there were barely a third of the scales

still left. The personal bathroom scale

had replaced almost all of them.

Collectors ignored the old scales

at first, but by the 1970s, there were

collectors who bought the Peerless

scales and others, and especially figural

scales like an iron Mr. Peanut. Mr.

Peanut scales were created in 1951.

There were only 65 ever made — one

for each of Planters Stores.

The scale pictured measures weights

from 25 pounds to 275 pounds. It sold

at a Cowan auction for $344.

a new mate. If you wish to place a message or respond to a message, please review the

acceptance standards and guidelines below.

HOW TO PLACE A MEET-A-MATE MESSAGE: Tradewinds will accept messages by

mail, e-mail or fax. We do not accept messages called to the automated answer line

or offi ce telephone.

Prepare your message: Type or print your message as you wish it to appear in the

Tradewinds Meet-A-Mate column. While we do not set a word limit, we ask that you

be brief with the details of your thoughts and features. Messages with inappropriate

language, innuendoes or lewd suggestions will not be published. We reserve the right to

reject or edit any message. The message must include your name, address and phone

number. We do not publish names, addresses or phone numbers as a part of the message

but we must have it on fi le in order to forward any responses to your message. We

will publish a code number assigned to your message, which allows readers to respond

directly to your message.

envelope and seal the envelope closed. Place the required postage (.49¢ stamp) on the

envelope. Forwarding of your reply is not guaranteed without proper postage. On the

back of the envelope, write the code number assigned to the person you are replying

to. Put your completed response envelope, along with $3.00 (per reply) check or money

order, in a separate envelope and address to: M-A-M, Tradewinds Classifi eds, 1430 I-85

Parkway, Ste. 239, Montgomery, AL 36106-3635. Seal and place the required postage

on the envelope and place in the mail. Payment for multiple responses may be made on

one check or money order for the total amount. (Tradewinds Classifi eds does not guarantee
