New parking at fairgrounds
Parking on the fairgrounds looks different
for this year’s Madison County Fair.
“Based on feedback from last year and
safety concerns expressed over the years, we
have made a significant change to the parking
plan,” said Paul Gross, Madison County
Senior Fair Board president.
As part of a multi-phase improvement
plan for the fairgrounds, the fair board has
created a new parking area in the infield of
the former horse-racing track. During fair
week, on-site parking is no longer available
anywhere else on the fairgrounds.
All vehicular traffic will enter and exit the
grounds from Garfield Avenue. The Elm
Street entrance is now open to pedestrian
traffic only. The setup is designed to keep vehicular
traffic on the outskirts of the fairgrounds
rather than driving through the
heart of the grounds where pedestrian traffic
is heavy.
Parking at the infield includes spots designated
for handicap parking. The Madison
County Shriners Club will offer free golf cart
rides to and from the parking area for individuals
with mobility challenges.
Fairgrounds Map
Hundreds of spaces are available in the
new parking area. They will be well marked.
In the future, permanent fences will enclose
the area.
“We should have capacity to handle all
the vehicle traffic we get,” Gross said.
Fair contact information
The Madison County Fairgrounds are located
at 205 Elm St. in London. Two entrances
operate during fair week—one gate on
Elm Street (pedestrians only) and a second
gate on Garfield Avenue.
Listen up for live music
Live music will fill the air two nights of
this year’s fair. Nashville artist Paulina
Jayne and her band perform on July 12, and
Marysville singer-songwriter Dan Wallace
and his band take the stage on July 13. Both
performances start at 7 p.m.
Paulina Jayne combines the storytelling
of country music with the edge of rock-n-roll,
the danceability of pop, and the thoughtfulness
of folk to create what she calls “urban
country.”
“Music is a vehicle for me to love people,
to help them feel known and seen through
song and lyric, and to create a moment that
both entertains and envelops an audience for
the short time I share with them,” she said.
Jayne’s song, “Love’s Gonna Always Win”
has generated more than a half-million
streams. The video for “Drove By,” a song
about a post-breakup moment, has racked
up more than 150,000 views on YouTube.
Jayne has opened for the likes of Sheryl
Crow, Rascal Flatts and Sam Hunt, and
shared Live Nation festival marquees with
such artists as Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert
and Luke Bryan.
In combination with her music career,
Jayne serves as an ambassador for two nonprofit
organizations, Ford Driving Skills For
Life and Miss Amazing, an organization that
empowers girls and women who have disabilities.
The sponsor for Paulina Jayne’s show is
Tri-Green.
Hailing from Marysville, Dan Wallace
prides himself on playing outlaw country,
whether in an acoustic setting or a full-bore
band format. He’ll have his band with him
for the fair show.
Wallace recently recorded his first album,
“Redemption,” in Nashville. He draws inspi-
Crashing and smashing
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Every year, Smash-It Demolition
Derby offers a crash course
in how to bring fair week to an
exciting end. The derby is always
the last event on the fair schedule.
This year, the date and time
are July 16 at 7 p.m.
Tim Clark, Smash-It owner
and a London resident, is running
five classes again this year,
including two that he introduced
last year—powder puff (for women
only) and minivan.
“The new classes went over really
good,” he said, adding that
all the classes enjoyed a good turnout in
2021.
In addition to powder puff and minivan,
the derby includes pro stock, mini-car and
street stock classes. Clark pays out three
places per class: $1,000 for first, $200 for second,
and $100 for third. The trophies are
four-foot, three-foot, and two-foot tall, respec-
The demolition derby returns to the Madison County
Fair, closing out the week in smashing fashion.
tively.
The derby typically attracts about 50
drivers, many of whom are from Madison
County. Several drivers are repeat participants,
showing up for the derby every year.
Some even follow Smash-It from show to
show over the course of a season. Smash-It
is hosting derbies in 36 counties this year.
Anyone 16 or older is welcome to participate.
The entry fee is $50. Those interested
need only show up at the fairgrounds on
derby day and visit the Smash-it trailer to
sign up.
Each heat comes with its own set of
rules, but some general rules apply to all
cars entered in the derby: all glass must be
removed, the doors must be wired or welded
shut, and the driver must wear a helmet
and seatbelt. For a full set of rules and other
information, visit https://smashitderby.com.
Clark also offers a power wheels division
for children ages 3 to 10 years old. Entrants
bring their own battery-operated power
wheel vehicles. Every child who participates
receives a trophy.
This year marks the 23rd year Smash-It
Demolition Derby has been in business.
Even though the business has a busy schedule,
Clark said he usually finds time to
switch hats from organizer to participant,
competing in one or two events a year put
on by other derby promoters in the state.
General admission to Madison County’s
demolition derby is free with paid gate admission
to the fair. Pit passes are an additional
$20 per person and can be purchased
at the Smash-It trailer.
The sponsor for the demolition derby is
Stanley Electric.

Mason Cordell’s father, Matt Cordell, and Mason’s brother, Case, lead the way on Mason’s
bike in an honorary memorial lap around the track prior to the start of the motocross
races at last year’s fair. A tribute is planned again this year.
Remembering Mason
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The motocross race at
the fair will once again
honor the memory of
Mason Cordell.
Mason, the son of Matt
and Amanda Cordell, was
a Madison-Plains High
School student who loved
motocross, football, hunting,
snowmobiling, 4-H,
FFA and more. He passed
away in 2019 as the result
of a fall from his motocross
bike.
In 2021, Amy Nichols,
a Madison County Senior
Fair Board member, organized
a tribute to
Mason Cordell
Mason that took place before the start of the
fair’s motocross race. She is doing the same
again this year and invites the public to join
in honoring the young man’s life.
The Mason Cordell Memorial Motocross
Race is set for July 14 at 7 p.m. Prior to the
race, London resident Ruth Peart will sing
the National Anthem. Mason’s father, Matt,
will lead a prayer after which FastTraxx, the
outfit putting on the motocross
event, will play a
recording made by a supercross
announcer in
Mason’s honor.
Matt will ride a solo
lap around the track on
Mason’s bike while one of
Mason’s favorite songs
plays. Following that
first lap, all of the motocross
entrants will take
a memorial lap.
Just like last year,
FastTraxx has designed
the race awards to include
an image of Mason.
Further tributes will
come in the form of loved
ones and supporters
wearing t-shirts emblazoned with 337,
Mason’s motocross number.
Proceeds from the t-shirt sales go to the
Mason Cordell Scholarship Fund. Mason’s
family awards scholarships to graduating
seniors from around Madison County. Anyone
who would like to support the fund can do so
by making a donation at Merchants National
Bank, 279 Lafayette St., London OH 43140.

Fight hunger, stock trailer
Farm Credit Mid-America, Rural 1st and
the Madison County Fair have partnered to
collect food donations to benefit Sufficient
Grace and other local food pantries as part
of a state-wide food drive contest.
Now in its second year, “Fight Hunger,
Stock the Trailer” is a friendly competition
that encourages junior fairs to collect food
donations for food banks across Ohio.
“Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer has
grown from a pilot project to a statewide initiative
that encourages the local community
to come out and help stock the shelves at
local food banks,” says Rudi Pitzer-Perry, a
regional vice president of agricultural lending
for Farm Credit Mid-America in Ohio.
“Last year, eight counties across central
and southeast Ohio collected more than
21,000 pounds of food that went on to benefit
18 local food banks. We’re very excited to see
what the growth and impact will look like as
the contest expands across Ohio this summer.”
Fair visitors may bring non-perishable
food items to the Madison County Fair July
9-16. Donations may be dropped off at the
trailer next to the Junior Fair Board office in
the middle of the fairgrounds. The total
weight of all donations will be calculated at
the end of the fair, with first-, second- and
third-place and cash prizes awarded to the
fairs that collect the most food.
“This initiative is near and dear to my
heart and the hearts of my teammates,” said
Amanda Lovedahl, an associate financial officer
for Farm Credit Mid-America and one
of the team members who leads the Fight
Hunger, Stock the Trailer initiative. “Anyone
can contribute and, ultimately, we all win by
giving back to a great cause.”
Prizes include a $500 award for each
county fair that participates, followed by a
$5,000 donation to the fair that raises the
most food, $3,500 for second place and $1,500
for third place. All prize money awarded will
support local junior fair activities.
The Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer contest
is being hosted on a regional basis. To
in 2022, reach out to Farm Credit Mid-America
The Monster Truck Racing League is making
its first appearance at the Madison
County Fair. Spectators can expect to see
trucks doing all sorts of stunts.
Get ready to be wowed by the agility and
speed of some out-of-this-world trucks as the
Monster Truck Racing League makes its
debut at the Madison County Fair.
Set for July 10, the show features four
monster trucks and one mini-monster truck.
The lineup, which is subject to change, includes
Amped Up, Awesome Kong, Predator,
and Pouncer on the full-size side of things
and Top Dog on the mini-size side.
Before the trucks get to showing off, the
league invites spectators to get an up-close
look at the vehicles and meet the drivers
during a pre-show called the Monster Truck
Fan Zone. Participants are welcome to get
autographs and take photos.
The show itself is presented in three
parts: wheelies, during which the trucks get
vertical; racing, during which trucks take
solo practice and qualifying runs then compete
side by side; and freestyle.
“Freestyle is when the drivers do whatever
they want. It could be doughnuts, jumping
cars, crushing cars, jumping dirt, doing
wheelies. They just really put on a show for
the fans,” said David Rife, Monster Truck
Racing League owner.
The 90-minute show is non-stop action
with no intermission. The full-size trucks,
driven by adults, average 1,500 horsepower,
weigh about 10,000 pounds, and sport 66-inch
tires. The mini truck, driven by a youth, does
the same jumps and stunts as the big guys.
“Kids really like watching the mini-monsters
because it’s kids who drive them,” Rife
said.
A monster truck show offers something for
everyone.
“Some people like racing, and we have
that with our side-by-side races. Some people
like demolition derbies; we have a little bit of
that feel with the trucks crushing whatever
we put out on the track. Some people like the
creativity you get with the freestyle part of
the show,” Rife said.
Monster Truck Racing League is based
out of Virginia and puts on 60 to 80 shows a
year. This year, the outfit has 16 shows
scheduled in Ohio alone. Rife said the sport
has a great following and continues to gain
popularity nationally and internationally.
“Our fans are pretty darn informed,” he
said. “There are so many Facebook groups
and YouTube channels that follow monster
trucks. They know their stuff.”
The sponsor for the monster truck show is
Coughlin Automotive.

Special interest auction
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Last year’s special interest
project auction went so
well, it’s back for a second
year.
Hosted by the Madison
County 4-H Committee, the
auction is for young exhibitors
with non-livestock
projects, such as clothing,
cooking, science and woodworking.
“They create an item related
to their project to auction
off to community
members and other supporters,”
said Frances Foos,
Madison County 4-H Extension
educator. “Each
item is unique and can include
anything from baked
goods and hand-sewn items
to STEM (science, technology,
engineering and math)
projects and home improvement
projects.”
Quilted pot holders, decorated cakes,
planter boxes and fresh breads were among
the items on the auction block last year.
“Their creativity
was what was the
coolest part.”
–Frances Foos
4-H Extension
educator
“Their creativity
was what was the
coolest part,” Foos
said of last year’s
participants.
A total of 23 exhibitors
created
items for the 2021
auction. All together,
their items brought in $7,000, much
more than the committee had anticipated.
“We had 50-plus bidders in the room.
There were lots of people who supported it,
plus people who came in afterward who
boosted up the totals,” Foos said. “Every kid
got at least $250. It exceeded all expectations.
The kids were really excited about it.”
The committee hopes to see even more
participation this year. Of the hundreds of
youths who take projects to the fair, approximately
100 take special interest projects
rather than livestock.
This year’s special interest project auction
is set for 5 p.m. July 14 in the Della Selsor
Building. Potential bidders are asked to
arrive by 4:30 p.m. to register.
Riley Cremeens, a member of the Fairfield Rascals 4-H Club,
displays her quilt as auctioneer Jay Kirtz collects bids at
the 2021 special interest project auction.
We applaud the efforts of all the young
people & adults who have worked together
to make this year’s Madison County Fair a
success. Thanks for a job well done.
Madison Editor
Six seats are up for election for the Madison
County Agricultural Society’s board of
directors.
The election is set for 1 to 5 p.m. July 16,
in the Coughlin Community Center on the
fairgrounds.
To run for election, a person must be a
Madison County resident and member of the
Ag Society. The two ways to become a member
are: purchase a week pass to the fair
(membership comes with it) or buy a membership
ticket to the fair. The fair office is
open prior to the fair for the sale of passes
and tickets. Hours are Monday through
Thursday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Petitions are available at the fair office.
Candidates must gather signatures from
other Ag Society members and return their
completed petitions to the fair office by 1
p.m. July 9.
To vote in the election, a person must be
at least 18 years old, a Madison County resident,
and an Ag Society member. On election
day, they must show their driver’s license
and their membership ticket.
Five of the seats up for election are currently
held by Jason Baker, James Cress,
Judy Gallimore, Les Geyman and Amy
Nichols. Each of these seats come with a
three-year term. The sixth seat was held by
George Roby who stepped down from the
board; the person elected to this seat will
serve the remainder of the term which expires
at the end of 2024.
Other members currently serving on the
15-member board are Paul Gross, Joe Henry,
Quinton Keeran, Tina Seaburn, and Kelly
Sifrit, whose terms expire in 2023, and Brock
Ballah, Brandon Estep, Kyle Seaburn and
Bryan Stonerock, whose terms expire in 2024.
The Ag Society (also known as the senior
fair board) is responsible for operating the
fair, managing other events that take place
on the fairgrounds, and maintaining the
grounds. The board meets at 7 p.m. the first
Wednesday of each month in the Coughlin
Community Center at the fairgrounds.
New class for truck pulls
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
There will be even more to enjoy at this
year’s Madison County Fair truck pulls
slated for 7 p.m. July 15.
The Central Ohio Truck
Pull Circuit (COTPC) has
expanded its class offerings
to include a 6,500-pound
limited street gas category.
Bridgett Shoemaker, who
owns and operates COTPC
with her father, Dennis
Long, describes it as “more
of an entry level gas class.”
Compared to the 6,500-lb. open gas class,
the limited street gas class requires the
truck’s interior—dash, bed floors, firewalls,
etc.—to remain completely intact. Additionally,
drivers cannot hang weights from the
truck’s front to help hold it down.
“The trucks in this new class will look
more like everyday driving trucks going
down the track,” Shoemaker said.
“They are the nicest
people. If you have a pit
pass, the guys are all right
there, usually sitting
around their trucks.”
–Bridgett Shoemaker,
COTPC co-owner about the
public meeting truck pullers
In addition to the new class and the
6,500-lb. open gas class, the truck pulls includes
classes for 8,000-lb. work stock
diesel, 6,200-lb. light pro stock gas, 8,000-
lb. 2.6 diesel, and 8,000-lb.
run what you brung open.
Anyone can enter as long
as they meet all safety
equipment guidelines. Organizers
will take entries
the day of the pulls up
until each class starts. The
minimum cash prizes for
each class are: $300, first;
$250, second; $200, third;
$125, fourth; $75, fifth; and $50, sixth.
Established in 2011, COTPC usually
puts on 12 or 13 pulls each year. This year,
they have 16 on their schedule, thanks to
new contracts with Dragway 42 in West
Salem, the Shelby County Fair in July, and
the Preble County Fair in August.
“We’re happy about it. It’s exciting,”
Shoemaker said of the bump in number of
pulls.
COTPC is hoping for 45 to 60 trucks at
the Madison County Fair pulls. Shoemaker
said most entrants hail from London, Circleville,
Mount Gilead, Delaware and other
towns within a two-hour drive of Madison
County. COTPC is based in London.
The noise of the engines, the smoke, the
eye-catching designs on some of the trucks’
exteriors—these are all draws for truck pull
fans, Shoemaker said.
“In all three gas classes, they are old
body style trucks from the 1970s—people
like to see that. And in the run what you
brung class, the trucks are painted and
wrapped and flashy, and people like to see
that,” she said.
She also encourages spectators to take
time to meet some of the drivers.
“They are the nicest people,” Shoemaker
said. “If you have a pit pass, the guys are
all right there, usually sitting around their
trucks.”
Admission to the truck pulls is free with
paid general admission to the fair. Pit
passes are $10 per person.
The sponsor for this year’s Madison
County Fair truck pulls is McMahon Truck
Centers.

FFA Barn prizes return
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
After a two-year hiatus, cash
premiums are back for FFA
youths who exhibit projects in
the FFA Barn at the Madison
County Fair.
Traditionally, members of the
London, Madison-Plains and
Tolles FFA chapters exhibit projects
such as crop samples, garden
produce, items made from
wood, and welding samples. That
wasn’t possible in 2020 as the
barn was closed for the fair due
to the COVID-19 pandemic. The
barn was open in 2021, but project
entries were down. Schools
were still working their way
through COVID-19 restrictions
that impacted the amount of
time students could spend on the
projects. Along the way, premiums
got lost in the shuffle.
Premiums are cash awards. A
judge reviews the projects exhibited
in the FFA Barn and assigns
each a grade of A, B or C. Exhibitors
receive a premium of $2
to $5 per project based on their
grade.
“Some kids see it as a competition.
We’ve had kids in the past
earn as much as $30 or $40 by
taking as many projects as they
can,” said Gary Hoffman, Madison-Plains
FFA advisor.
He said he is happy to see the return of
premiums for these projects as an incentive
and a reward. Making that possible this year
is a $500 donation from Murray & Edwards
Marathon Products.
“The kids work so hard, and they want to
show these projects off,” said Amy Nichols,
Madison County Fair Board member. “We
thought, why not try to give them a little bit
of something for their hard work. Murray &
Edwards stepped up to the plate so that we
could return to doing that.”
In addition to the examples listed above,
FFA projects have included bales of hay or
straw, jars of corn or soybean seeds, birdhouses,
sawhorses, light stands that show a
student’s welding and electricity know-how,
and posters detailing students’ supervised
agriculture experiences.
Standing inside the FFA Barn on the Madison County
Fairgrounds, fair visitors take a look at the posters FFA
students made to explain their supervised agricultural
experiences.
Always a popular feature of the FFA Barn is the pen of
newborn chicks.
Visitors to the FFA Barn will see not only
individual projects but also displays by the
different FFA chapters showcasing what
they have done over the past year, including
community service projects, fundraisers, and
regular meetings.
“The No. 1 thing we try to do with the
FFA Barn is to promote FFA which is a national
organization,” Hoffman said. “We
want to promote agriculture. We want to display
what our kids do in the classroom to educate
the public about what’s out there
besides 4-H. It shows opportunities for high
school students.”
Other popular features of the FFA Barn
are the live ducks and the baby chickens,
along with picnic tables made by FFA students
where fair visitors can sit indoors, out
of the elements.

Even more rodeo to love
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Broken Horn Rodeo returns to
the Madison County Fair with an
expanded list of events.
Set for 7 p.m. July 9, the rodeo
includes the usuals—saddle bronc
riding, bareback horse riding, steer
wrestling, tie-down calf roping, barrel
racing, team roping, and bull
riding. New to the list is breakaway
roping for female competitors.
Breakaway roping is a variation
of calf roping in which the calf is
roped but not thrown and tied. It
requires a competitor to lasso a calf
from atop a horse. Once the rope is
around the calf’s neck, the rider
signals the horse to stop suddenly.
The rope is tied to the saddle horn
with a string. When the calf hits
the end of the rope, the rope is pulled tight
and the string breaks. A white flag or handkerchief
tied to the end of the rope helps the
timer see the moment the rope breaks. The
rider with the fastest time wins.
Broken Horn added breakaway roping to
give cowgirls on the rodeo circuit more opportunities
to earn points leading up to finals
competition in January.
“It’s quite fun!” said Sandra McElroy,
who has operated Broken Horn with her
husband, Jim, since 1991. The outfit is
based in Ripley, Ohio, and sanctioned by
the International Professional Rodeo Association
and the American Professional
Rodeo Association.
Spectators can expect to see both pros
Dean Harris, a Madison County resident,
will once again sing the National Anthem
at the start of the rodeo.
Josh Rainier of Groveport took third place in the tiedown
roping competition at last year’s rodeo.
and amateurs in the competition at the fair.
They come from all over the United States.
Entrants must register by 5 p.m. July 5 by
calling (337) 427-6336.
“We had a really good rodeo at the Madison
County Fair last year. It was awesome,”
Sandra said, adding that the event attracted
an unusually large number of bareback and
saddle bronc riders.
She encourages everyone to come out and
enjoy the competition, saying it’s wholesome
fun. The caliber of the cowboys and cowgirls
is top-notch, she said, and the rodeo’s funnyman
(the clown) is great about getting the
crowd involved. The funny man, the bull
fighters, and many of the cowboys and cowgirls
are happy to sign autographs.
“It’s family entertainment. Even grandmas
and grandpas like it,” Sandra said.
Youngsters have a chance to get in on the
rodeo action with stick horse races. There’s
no entry fee and no need to register ahead of
time. Entrants are divided into two age
groups—5 and younger, and 6 to 9. Winners
receive bicycles. This year’s prize sponsors
are Mason & Sons Dumpsters, Dena King
with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services,
Diamond J Quarterhorses, and Reiterman
Feed & Supply.
General admission to the rodeo is free with
paid gate admission to the fair. Watch and
listen for Dean Harris, a Madison County resident,
to once again sing the National Anthem
at the start of the event.
The rodeo sponsor is BST Trucking.

Racing around the track
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
For the first time, the Central Ohio
Quarter Midget Racing Association (CO-
QMRA) is hosting a race during fair week.
The association’s track, built in 2010, is
located on the fairgrounds along Elm Street.
From April through October, youths ages 5
to 16 years old get behind the wheel and put
the pedal to the metal.
The association’s upcoming race on July
10 coincides with fair week. Fairgoers are
invited to stop by the track to check out the
action. Admission to the race is free. Racing
gets started at 10 a.m. and will continue
until about 4 p.m.
“We’ll run seven to 10 races, depending
on who shows up,” said Chuck smith, CO-
QMRA vice president and tech director. “We
can get up to 12 cars on the track for the
older kids’ classes. We do smaller groups for
the novices.”
Each class starts with a heat race of 10 to
15 laps. Feature races are 25 to 30 laps. The
more experienced drivers can get around the
track in about 5 seconds.
“It’s the fastest quarter-midget track in
Ohio,” Smith said, crediting the fastness to
the track’s banked concrete oval design. “A
lot of other tracks are flatter. The banking
helps you keep your speed up.”
Events at the London track attract racers
from all over Ohio. The venue is one of five
quarter-midget tracks in the state.
Quarter-midget racing is so named because
the vehicles involved are a quarter the
size of full-size race cars.
“It’s an entry level form of racing until you
move up to stock or sprint cars. We have kids
now who are moving on to bigger things at
12 to 14 years old,” Smith said.
It’s an expensive sport, but the family atmosphere
can’t be beat, he added.
“We’re family friendly. Everyone pitches
in,” Smith said. “We’re a close-knit group. If a
kid is having trouble with his car, even if it’s
an opponent, we jump out there and help
them get it fixed and back on the track.”
Smith’s son, Charlie, started racing when
he was 5 years old. This year marks his third
season, and he’s loving it.
“Racing has helped him become more outgoing,”
Smith said. “He was shy when he first
started, but he has come out of his shell. He’s
also made a lot of friends out of this.”
Following the race during fair week, CO-
QMRA is hosting four more races in London
before wrapping up the 2022 season: Aug. 27
Charlie Smith speeds around the quartermidget
racetrack located on the Madison
County Fairgrounds.
at 5 p.m., Aug. 28 at noon, Oct. 1 at noon,
and Oct. 2 at noon.
For anyone curious about the sport, the association
is holding an arrive-and-drive Aug.
27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children ages 5 to
16 are invited to get into a quarter-midget car
and take a few laps around the track. To learn
more, visit “Central Ohio Quarter Midget
Racing” on Facebook or call (740) 506-1260.
Tug-a-truck and dirt drags
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Here’s your chance to be the star of the
show. The Madison County Fair’s tug-atruck
and dirt drags competitions are all
about you, the public.
Put on by the Madison County Fair
Board with the help of experienced volunteers,
the competitions are open to anyone
and are set for July 11.
Over the winter, the fair board installed
a concrete pad at the infield with the tug-atruck
competition in mind. So, what exactly
is tug-a-truck? Think tug-o-war for trucks.
“Two trucks of comparable size back up
to each other. You tie them together with a
strap and see which is toughest,” said Paul
Gross, Senior Fair Board president.
This will be the first time for tug-a-truck
at the Madison County Fair. The fair board
hosted a practice run in early June. More
than 30 trucks entered, and several spectators
showed up. Gross hopes that is a positive
indication for a good turnout at the fair
event.
The fair’s tug-a-truck starts at 5 p.m. The
dirt drags follow at 7:30. The fair board invites
anyone with a motorized vehicle and a
desire to race to enter the dirt drags. Just
about anything goes—cars, trucks, motorcycles,
ATVs, lawn mowers, you name it. Similar
vehicles will be paired up for one-on-one,
side-by-side races.
For information about registration fees
and deadlines, visit the fair’s website at
https://madisoncountyfairoh.com. For both
events, 90 percent of entry fees will be paid
out in prizes to the winners.
Everything’s under control
Katelynn Peterson and Rocket took the top spot in last year’s speed and control lead
line miniature donkey 8-13 class. Peterson is a member of the LFS Riders 4-H Club.

Young and in charge
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
When it comes to the
fair, adults aren’t the only
ones running the show.
The Junior Fair Board,
made up of teens active in
4-H and/or FFA, are an
integral part of the organization
and operation of
fair events pertaining to
youth exhibitors.
From choosing the fair
theme—this year it’s
“Home Grown in Madison
County”—to making
recommendations for
changes to events, the
Junior Fair Board has a
lot of say in what goes on
during fair week.
“We make a lot of the
decisions pertaining to
the Junior Fair,” said
Anna LeGault, 16, Junior
Fair Board president.
One of those decisions this year involves
the Ag Olympics, a just-for-fun event that
allows youth exhibitors to blow off steam
after a long week of showing and judging.
“We’re adding more diversity to the
events we do at Ag Olympics,” LeGault said.
“We hope to do a straw bale throwing contest
and throw wet sponges at fair royalty
and see who gets the wettest.”
Milk chugging and searching for pennies
in shavings also are possibilities for this
year’s Ag Olympics.
“We’re talking it up to increase participation.
For a lot of kids, it’s one of their favorite
events,” LeGault said.
Over the course of fair week, Junior Fair
Board members take turns manning the
Junior Fair Board Office. They sign up for
two-hour shifts and make sure the office is
staffed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. They
are there to answer questions, whether from
fellow youth exhibitors, parents or the general
public.
“It the perfect spot in the middle of the
fairgrounds. People will sometimes ask the
most random questions,” LeGault said. “The
most popular questions are: ‘Where are the
bathrooms?’ and ‘Where are the goats showing?’”
The Madison County Junior Fair Board meets monthly from December
through July. At their December meeting, they exchanged
Christmas-themed socks: (front row, from left) Emily
LeGault, Anna LeGault, Maddy Estep, Thomas Leach; (back row)
Junior Fair Board members are in charge
of social media before, during and after the
fair. They also come up with each year’s custom
designed fair t-shirt. They help with fair
entries and running the shows. The list goes
on.
LeGault, who will be a junior at Madison-
Plains High School this fall, is enjoying her
time on the board. She served as a member
last year and started her duties as president
this past January. Serving on Junior Fair
Board is something of a tradition in her family.
Her grandparents, Tom and Karen
Geyer, both served as board presidents, and
her mother, Kimberly, was a long-time board
member.
“It’s definitely something my family is
very passionate about. I wanted to be part of
the Junior Fair Board to make a difference,”
she said.
Le Gault has been showing pigs since she
was 3 years old. She joined the 4-H program
as a Cloverbud with her mother as club advisor.
Currently, she is a member of Madison-Plains
FFA and the Mud Run Hustlers
4-H Club. This year, she is showing two
horse projects and two pig projects.
LeGault’s twin sister, Emily, serves as the
Junior Fair Board secretary. Ellie Heisler is
vice president.

Check out livestock sale
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The Madison County Junior Fair Livestock
Sale Committee is constantly looking
for ways to make the sale experience better
for buyers and exhibitors.
Last year, the committee introduced a
buyers hospitality lounge in the Coughlin
Community Center, adjacent to the Eby
Arena where the sale takes place. The
lounge offers an air conditioned space with
complimentary food and beverages, giving
buyers a comfortable spot to take breaks but
still be close to the sale.
“It was very well received last year. We’re
bringing it back this year,” said Crystal
Tubbs, committee president.
New this year, buyers can pay the day of
the sale by credit card. Checks also remain
an option.
Also new, buyers can make add-on (a.k.a.
boost) payments via an online portal at
https://madisoncounty.fairentry.com. The
site opens July 10 and closes July 20. Online
boost payments can be made for individual
exhibitors only. Boosts of any kind can still
be made on-site during the sale or with a
paper form by mail. New buyers can use the
aforementioned website to register.
This year’s Junior Fair Livestock Sale
starts at 9 a.m. July 16 in the Eby Arena.
More than 200 youth exhibitors are signed
up to take part in the sale.
The sale order is swine, goats, sheep,
poultry, rabbits, beef and dairy. The animals
of grand champions, reserve champions, and
premier exhibitors will sell first at the start
of their respective specie categories. The
grand showman of showmen’s animal will
take to the auction block at 1 p.m. All champion
animals will be on display in the
Franklin Barn on sale day.
“We have two main goals for the sale. We
want to attain the best possible outcome we
can for the exhibitors, and we want to provide
a meaningful experience for our buyers,”
Tubbs said. “We want to make sure our
buyers feel recognized, and we want to let
them know they are investing in hardworking
4-H and FFA youths who will become our
future workforce.”
For more information about how to become
a buyer or any other facet of the Junior
Fair Livestock Sale, contact Crystal Tubbs
at crystalhall2@yahoo.com.
‘I want them all to win’
By Jacqui Lauer
2021 Madison County Fair Queen
The big kids didn’t know I wanted them
all to win.
From the time I was tiny, I watched the
teenagers in my county show at the fair. I
admired them—they were so confident and
seemed to know so much. All of those kids
have “aged out.” Many of them have kids of
their own now who will be showing at the
fair. After I crown the next Madison County
Junior Fair queen, I will have aged out, too.
On the first full day of the 2021 fair,
after they placed the crown on my head, I
stepped out onto the midway. A little girl
asked for a picture with me. When I was little,
I wanted to wear the crown. I found myself
hoping the little girl would have the
same opportunity when she was my age, if
she wanted it.
As queen, wearing a five-inch crown, a
sash, and one of several machine-washable
dresses, I welcomed visitors from other fairs
and festivals to Madison County, handed
out awards to those who showed livestock
and took special interest projects, rode in
parades, attended hometown festivals and
special occasions, and visited other fairs and
festivals to represent Madison County.
Every fair or festival has something
about it that is the best, and I take many of
those ideas back to my own county. Adults
in business would call this “benchmarking,”
but I’m told that term doesn’t usually come
with a side of fair fries and a picture of a
champion rooster.
I was told the begats of the tractor
brands, but as a town girl, I admit, I don’t
remember them all. I came to appreciate copious
amounts of napkins and the difference
between true coney sauce on a hot dog
and sloppy Joe. I got to meet dozens of
other ambassadors and royalty who are
every bit as proud of their fairs and festivals
as I am of the Madison County Fair,
and I met up with several of them later
when competing in the Ohio Fair Manager’s
Queens Competition.
Over the last year, I’ve said, “Come to
the Madison County Fair - July 9th
through the 16th,” at least a thousand
times, and it will only get old when the fair
is over and the dates change for next year.
Representing my county has been amazing,
but I do look forward to crowning the
next queen. The kids competing don’t know
it, but I want them all to win.
Last year, Jacqui Lauer (center) was
crowned as the Madison County Junior Fair
queen. Her reign comes to an end at this
year’s fair.
Look who's
coming to
the Fair!!!
While Elvis will not be shaking
things up at the Fairgrounds
this summer, you just might run
into Joe there. Hopefully, he will
not be wearing his Elvis costume, though.
And if you don't see Joe at the fair, stop in to see him
at Plain City Druggist. He'll be there behind the counter,
waiting to answer questions and shake things up.
Mr. Puppet set to perform
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
He’s back and so are
his menagerie of entertaining
characters! Mr.
Puppet (a.k.a. Bob
Abdou) is slated to perform
in the pavilion on
July 12 at 12 p.m., 2 p.m.,
4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on
July 13 at 2 p.m., 3:30
p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Mr. Puppet’s puppet
family includes such hilarious
personalities as
Henrietta Operetta, the
opera-singing chicken,
Stinky, a possum who
wants to be an elephant,
and Grog, a wolf who
plays piano. There also
are Roofus Doofus, the
singing cowboy, Bingo,
the monkey who tries to convince audiences
that Mr. Puppet is the real monkey on stage,
Mr. Puppet will bring many members of his puppet family to
the fair on Tuesday and Wednesday.
and Oscar and Gertrude, a couple married
for 49 years who dispense advice about
love, marriage and children.
In the entertainment business since
1996, Abdou is a ventriloquist, puppeteer,
humorist and educator. He got his start in
Atlanta, Ga., then, after stints in Philadelphia,
Pa., and Austin, Texas, spent 10 years
in Columbus, Ohio. While he moved to
South Carolina last year, he still keeps a
full schedule of Ohio performance dates.
From July through September, he is making
the rounds at not only the Madison
County Fair, but also fairs in Crawford, Jefferson,
Morrow, Richland, Union, Van Wert
and Washington counties. He and his puppet
friends can be seen this summer at libraries
in Circleville, Clintonville, Crestline and
Springfield and at day schools in Columbus,
Dublin, Gahanna, Kettering and Westerville.
Mr. Puppet performs for young and mature
audiences alike. At festivals, fairs, libraries,
schools, and birthday parties, he
has the whole family in stitches. He also
gets adult audiences laughing at banquets,
corporate shows, holiday parties, conventions,
and senior citizens facilities.
“One of my greatest experiences as a
performer is when I perform at a party and
all the adults are in another room. The children
laugh so much that the adults just
have to see what all the commotion is
about. When the adults come see, they
laugh out loud, too,” he said.

Kiddie tractor pull change
Chance to qualify
for state competition
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Buckeye Pedal Pullers takes kiddie tractor
pedal pulls to a whole new level.
Based in Bucyrus, Ohio, the outfit is
making its debut at the 2022 Madison
County Fair. Children ages 4 to 11 years old
are invited to compete for trophies and even
a chance to qualify for state competition.
This year’s fair pull takes place at 12 p.m.
July 16 in sheep arena.
“We are the only kiddie tractor pullers in
Ohio who are sanctioned by the National
Pedal Pullers Association,” said Gary
Daiber, who has owned and operated the
business for the past 11 years.
Sanctioning means the top three finishers
in each age group at Buckeye Pedal Pullers
events qualify to compete at the state championship,
if they so choose. This year’s state
competition takes place Aug. 13 at the Hartford
Independent Fair in Croton, Ohio. Winners
in Croton move on to the national
championship which takes place in September
at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
“Approximately 25 other states participate,”
Daiber said.
Even if your child simply aspires to have a
good time at the Madison County Fair, kiddie
tractor pulls are a good bet. There is no cost
to enter, and every participant goes home
with a ribbon. Winners receive trophies.
Daiber stays busy. This year alone, he is
hosting pulls at 47 events around Ohio, from
fairs and festivals to antique tractor shows,
church functions and other events. He is excited
to add Madison County to the list this
year.
“We are very happy they invited us,” said
Daiber, who runs Buckeye Pedal Pullers with
the help of his son and daughter-in-law.
Kiddie pedal pulling started as a hobby for
the family then grew into a business. Daiber
said working with children is what he likes
most about it.
“I’ve had kids who have stayed with me
competing from the time they were 4 through
11 years old—they’re just like family to me,”
he said, adding that he gets emotional when
they compete at the state and national levels.
in the Sheep Arena at this year’s fair.
