ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Jen and this is a little bit about myself. First, I must say this project was a lot of fun.
Like a book from my gradeschool years lol. I don’t know if children today still do book reports, but when
I was in school, they were required and boy did I dread reading the assigned books then having to
summarize them! I loved reading books that interested me and hopefully this will interest you. I created
it for anyone that needs help with identification. For the novice glass collectors that buy animal covered
dishes because they fall in love with the way they look or the type of animals they are, or simply for
their colors. For the avid collectors who enjoy buying a few of each animal regardless of the maker. For
the veteran collectors who may have hundreds of glass dishes who never cease to amaze me with their
beautiful collections. For the people that have inherited or purchased someone’s entire collection or
part of a collection and need help to identify things. For the people like me that are meticulous about
every detail needing to label things and just absolutely need to know the whats, whens, whos, hows and
whys of the animal dishes they own. For me, what started with one Asian yellow stained glass bunny on
a nest, has flourished into a full blown collection of hundreds of mixed and matched animal covered
“candy” dishes of all glass types and colors. No particular glass maker, just everything I can’t live
without. LOL. Anyone that knows me would tell you that I stop at nothing, studying book after book
searching for answers about my own glass animals until I find them. I have never been satisfied with a
mystery….unless it involves me watching Columbo, my lifelong favorite television program! I am a
mystery solver... a true detective. I get this from my Mother, Cindy -Sultana- Wheatley. I need to get to
the bottom of a piece of unidentified glass. It drives me bananas not to know everything I can about
each piece that I own. Next, I will tell you that the monetary value of my glassware means nothing to
me. I collect it because I love it. However, unique and rare is always a find! Sure, like every collector, I
love a bargain and have had to pass up many pieces that I could not afford. Ooooh the ones that got
away. They haunt me. I can assure you that when I get a new addition to my collection, it has found its
forever home. Someone before me and usually possibly before them owned these animal covered
dishes making a kind of history that I can only imagine in my mind, its importance to each person. There
is a reason behind every single glassware in every single dwelling. Glass symbolizes many things. It is
proudly displayed. It is important to the person who owns it. I enjoy seeing the happiness glassware
brings to people, especially these animal covered dishes. Who doesn’t love animals? I also enjoy seeing
my collection knowing these pieces of history live on and hope that when I am long gone, they will be in
other homes. My glass brings me peace; most peaceful in the evenings when the cabinet lights are on
and the glass does its natural thing; what it was intended to do since the day it was made...look pretty!
To me, it is reminiscent of having a year round Christmas Tree. Glass is AMAZING! I am a country girl
through and through. I love all things nature. I am an avid bird watcher and an all around animal lover. I
live in the beautiful state of Kentucky with my husband and our two dogs, Monkey and Johnnie, who by
the way, is named after my all time favorite singer, Johnny Cash.

Fenton art Glass
In 1905, Fenton Art Glass was formed by Fenton brothers, John and Frank. They
didn't pour their first piece of glass until two years later when they relocated from
Martin's Ferry Ohio to Williamstown, WV where Fenton would remain open for the
next 100 years and include four generations of family. Right out of high school, in
1897, Frank L Fenton went to work for Indiana Glass. Between 1898-1905 he worked
as a designer for three glass companies; Jefferson, Northwood and Bastow. In 1906,
Jacob Rosenthal, the creator of Greentown's Chocolate milk glass color joined
Fenton and stayed until his death in 1933. His sons Paul and Clarence worked at
Fenton with him. One of the first colors Fenton produced in 1907 was Chocolate.
Shortly after the first year, Fenton produced many iridescent colors and Stretch glass
in pastel colors into the 1920's.
In the 1930's Fenton poured the Knobby Back Turtle mold for L.G. Wright Glass
Company. Si Wright owned the Knobby Back Turtle and Atterbury-style Duck molds.
The L.G. Wright Atterbury style duck was poured by Fenton for decades. Upon the
death of their father and uncle in 1948, Frank L Fenton's two sons Frank M and
Wilmer C, known as "Bill" began to run the glass factory. Bill was a talented
salesman and Fenton prospered under the two of them. In 1986, the 3rd generation
of Fentons took over the glass factory. Frank M's son George and Bill's son Don took
over the glass factory.
Fenton borrowed the 7" Westmoreland Rabbit with Eggs lid mold from Levay
Distributing Company and paired it with their own smooth rimmed base to create
Fenton's Bunny Box number 4683. This base is also paired with the Rooster and
Mother Eagle. The bases resemble Challinor & Taylor bases. In the Spring of 1991,
Fenton debuted the 7" Bunny Box. The bunny would become part of their annual
Easter Collection that included a 7" Rooster, 5" Hen, small bunny and chick figurines
and sometimes painted eggs. Later they added a standing figural rooster. Offered in
Pastel iridized colors, these Barnyard Animals were sold as a set. The Easter
Collection was offered for a limited time each Spring. By Easter of 1996, artist Robin
Spindler created the Folk Art line. Folk Art required Robin to air brush, hand paint
and hand rub gold gilding on the bases of each animal covered dish which produced
life like appearances in natural colors.
In 1988, Fenton produced glass specially for the QVC (Quality, Value, Convenience)
Cable Channel, a televised home shopping program that began in 1986. Bill Fenton
went on air selling Fenton pieces with QVC host Steve Bryant.

FENTON ART GLASS
Two Easter Bunny boxes were sold at QVC. The first was March '97 in Plum
Iridescent/White Opal, Hand Painted. The second was March '99 in White Opal, Hand
Painted signed by Shelley Fenton. 7" long.
Fenton leased the Westmoreland Lion on Picket Fence mold in 1985 from Levay
Distributing and reproduced the Lion only one time. In 1994, the 90th Anniversary
Historical Collection was produced in very limited quantities. This collection was in
Stiegel Green stretch glass. Steigel Green was developed in 1933. Stretch glass was
popular in the 1920's. The effect was reached by spraying glass with salts and
reheating until it resulted in a satin finish. Usually pulled or stretched as it cooled. As
part of the Collection, Fenton reproduced the original Westmoreland Specialty
Company Lion on Picket Fence Base. The Lion base may be marked number 90 inside
an oval representing Fenton's 90th year and is *RARE* to find due to low numbers
produced. 5 1/2" long.
In 1991, Fenton leased the Westmoreland Mother Eagle lid mold from Levay
Distributing and paired it with their own 7" Fenton base to produce the Eagle as part
of their 1991 Historical Collection. It was made in light Amethyst carnival. Lid rim is
stippled. Marked WG in lid. Base is marked 'F' inside an oval. Fenton label in the base.
Levay received royalties as this was a part of a royalty agreement between both glass
companies. 7" long.
Fenton leased the Westmoreland Lamb on Picket Fence Base mold in 1985 from
Levay Dist. 1999-2001, Fenton produced the Lamb on Picket Fence Base for Martha
Stewart's mail order catalog company in White Milk Glass, Pink Milk Glass and
Martha Green aka Jadeite. Marked 'F' inside an oval. Silver and Black Fenton label
may be present. 5 1/2" long.
Also in 1999, Fenton bought these molds at the final L.G. Wright auction: 5 " basket
weave base, 5" duck lid & base, 5" lamb lid, 5" swan lid and 5" turkey lid. Fenton
reproduced these four animal covered dishes. These are marked with a cursive 'F'
inside an oval indicating Fenton purchased the molds from another glass company.
They may have a Fenton label inside. These animal covered dishes were produced in
several colors. The turkey was even produced in Burmese glass! Burmese glass,
which is UV reactive entered Fenton lines in the late 1970's. Burmese glass was
invented in 1885 by Frederick Shirley of Massachusetts. It is gold and uranium glass
combined in the mold and when reheated, the edges turned pink. Chemist Charley
Goe who worked for Fenton 1960-'69, perfected the Fenton Burmese technique.
Fenton leased the Westmoreland 7" Fox lid mold from Levay Distributing to
reproduce the Fox in 1993 in Ruby Marble, color code (RX). The Fenton Fox was a
private production, not shown in catalogs. Fox slag color looks like a fiery orange-red
mixed with white. Lid may be marked WG. Base is marked 'F' inside an oval and may
have Fenton's silver and black label inside. The Fox is ***RARE***.
In 2005 for Fenton's 100th year Anniversary, they reintroduced Chocolate milk glass.
They produced several Chocolate animal covered dishes. These will have a Fenton
100th anniversary label. Base or lid or both marked 'F' inside an oval with 0.
Fenton reproduced quite a few animal covered dishes for themselves and also
poured glass for others. Many ACD's are marked 'F' inside an oval, indicating they
were acquired from other glass companies, both purchased and leased.
In the world of Glass, the Fenton brand gained the most notoriety and still does
today. Fenton was so much more than a just a Glass Factory. They were a glass
movement. Fenton had a gift shop, a decorating department and their own glass
club, FAGCA, Fenton Art Glass Club of America. They also offered a quarterly
magazine called The Glass Messenger to subscribers between 1996-2011. Informative
glass news, special glass purchases and stories of family members and Fenton
workers abounded. The employees were treated as family. Fenton did not make
many animal covered dishes and their other glassware was stunning. Fenton is best
known for their iridescent colors, carnival colors, stretch glass, and hand painted
items. They even produced a few slag colors. Fenton produced glass for numerous
businesses and glass companies so remember, just because a piece of glass is L.G.
Wright or Cracker Barrel or Hallmark, do not discount it! It could have been poured
by Fenton which was beautifully crafted glassware in the U.S.A. Fenton's glass world
is still very much alive today among old and new collectors. When a newbie collector
gets a piece of glassware, their first question is usually "Is this a Fenton?" Fenton
ended operations and closed their doors in 2011 after 106 years.
FENTON BIRD BOX
Fenton Art Glass produced this sample Bird Box in 1962. It has a Fenton sample tag
inside the lid. The owner got it in 2008 at the Fenton factory. The Bird was found in a
hoard of color sample bins or hidey hole of sorts. The owner, a Fenton expert, thinks this
color may have been an attempt at the old Hobbes Amberina. While I was trying to figure
out who Fenton borrowed or leased this Bird lid mold from led me here: Fenton's sample
Bird has a smooth berry and lacks the pointed twigs under the tail. Meaning, I could rule
out the Birds which were made with rough/seeded berries and pointed twigs under their
tails...Greentown & St. Clair/Joe St. Clair. Summit too, but Summit was late to the game
(1980). This left L.G. Wright, Imperial or Degenhart which all had smooth berries and no
pointed twigs. I studied every design on the lids of all my Birds to learn that this Fenton
Bird was made from the L.G. Wright mold. 37 years later, Fenton would go on to
purchase L.G. Wright's basket weave base at Wright's final auction. There was no
mention of who bought the Bird lid mold. John's Lid and Base are 100% from Wright
molds, even if it did take many years to pair them. This Bird has a Black base. 5 1/2" long.
fENTON SMALL BUNNY BOX
Fenton's Small Bunny Box is a reproduction of the original 1943-1978
Imperial Bunny-on-Nest. Fenton removed the Imperial logo and added 'F'
inside an oval which was the mark used on items they reproduced. Small
Bunny Boxes were advertised in Fenton's Spring catalogs between 2005-
2011. The majority were produced in Burmese glass or Opal White
Satin/Opal Sanded glass, hand painted and signed by artists. Gems are by
Swarovski. On their 100 year anniversary in 2005, Fenton produced a
Chocolate Milk Glass Bunny Box which varied in color. Bunny Boxes may still
have foil labels attached which read Fenton HANDMADE IN USA. Only the
Chocolate Bunny Box has a 100 yr label. Lid or base marked 'F' inside an
oval. Both pieces may be marked. 4 1/2" long.
Bunny Boxes were produced and sold on QVC, a televised home shopping
cable network.
Reproduced by Wilkerson Glass in uranium colors (UV reactive). Made in
the USA. Marked 'W' with wings.
Fenton's 7" Bunny Box was part of their Easter Barnyard Animals Collection. Fenton leased
the original Westmoreland (WG) Rabbit with Eggs lid mold from Levay Distributing. Fenton
paired the Bunny top with their smooth rimmed base. This base also fits Fenton's Rooster
Box, Covered Eagle Box, and Covered Fox. Beginning in 1991, the Bunny Boxes were
advertised in annual Easter catalogs in limited quantities. The Easter sales lasted through
March 31st of each year. The Bunny was sold as part of a set including a 7" Rooster Box, 5"
Hen on nest and figurines. Easter of 1996, artist Robin Spindler created the Folk Art line. Folk
art animal covered dishes (Boxes) began as a solid Ivory color. Robin air brushed, hand
painted and hand rubbed gold gilding on the bases of each animal covered dish (BOX) which
produced life like appearances in natural colors. Bunny lid rim is stippled. Base may be
marked 'F' inside an oval. May have a Fenton Hand painted or Hand made label. May be
marked with a number of sequence produced. 7" long x 5" high.
Produced for Martha Stewart's mail order catalog, Martha By Mail, 1999.
Bunny Boxes were produced and sold on QVC, a televised home shopping cable network.
Fenton Art Glass Duck Box 6468 is a reproduction of the L.G. Wright 80-5 Duck Candy
Box ca 1961-1979. LG Wright Duck was not an original. It was a reproduction of the
original Czech Republic (Josef Inwald A.G.) Duck with Plate Rim, Small ca 1914. Note:
L.G. Wright did NOT acquire the original Inwald Duck mold. In 1961, Si Wright hired
Botson Machine & Mould to create one. In 1999, Fenton purchased the Duck mold at
the final L.G. Wright auction and produced it for their 95th and 100 year anniversaries
in 2001 & 2005. Duck has bulged molded eyes. Base is flanged. Top of flange is
smooth. Bottom has wavy lines or ridges which end/stop 3 cm from the edge. Base or
lid marked 'F' inside an oval. Fenton labels may be present. Some Chocolate Duck lids
have 100 YR details in scripted White writing. Even though L.G. Wright referred to this
FENTON covered eagle box
Fenton Art Glass Covered Eagle Box is a reproduction of the
Westmoreland Mother Eagle. In 1985, Levay Distributing Company
bought the Westmoreland Eagle lid mold. In 1991, Fenton borrowed the
lid mold from Levay in a royalty agreement with the Levis. Fenton paired
the Levay Eagle lid with their own smooth rimmed Challinor & Taylor
style base also used for the Fenton Rooster and Fenton Fox. Yes, there
was a Fenton Fox! The Fenton Eagle was only produced in light Amethyst
Carnival. It was advertised as part of their Historic Collection of 1991.
Fenton's Eagle never had glass eyes but did have flat eye sockets. Lid rim
is stippled. Lid is marked WESTMORELAND III in a circle. Base is marked
'F' inside an oval. Silver and Black label inside that reads FENTON
Handmade in USA. 6" high x 7" long.
No known reproductions.
In 2009 McKee Art Glass acquired the Eagle lid mold. The base was
scrapped by Fenton. McKee has not yet reproduced the Eagle at the
Fenton Art Glass Fox Box is a reproduction of the Westmoreland Fox on
Nest ca. 1972-1982. Westmoreland reproduced the original Atterbury Fox
Covered Dish ca. 1889. Fenton leased the Westmoreland Fox Lid mold
from Levay Distributing and paired it with their own smooth rimmed
Challinor & Taylor style base also used for the Fenton Rooster and
Fenton Eagle. The Fenton Fox was only produced in 1993 and only in
Ruby Marble, color code RX. The color can be described as a fiery Red-
Orange-Yellow swirled with bits of White. Unknown quantities. It was not
shown in catalogs. Base is marked 'F' inside an oval. Lid may be marked
the same way. Lid may be marked with the old WG logo.
7 1/2" long. ***VERY RARE***
Gary Levi of Levay Distributing owned the mold from 1985 until he
passed away in 2009. Also in 2009, Chris Mckee of McKee Art Glass
was interested in buying Levay animal covered dish molds, but
Fenton had already scrapped the molds.
fENTON lION BOX
Fenton Lion Box W369 is a reproduction of the original Westmoreland Specialty
Company Lion on Picket Fence Base. Fenton leased the Westmoreland mold in 1985
from Levay Distributing. Fenton produced stretch Lion dish in 1994 for only 6
months. This Lion dish is Steigel Green Stretch Glass. Stretch glass is iridized glass
that has been re-heated after the iridescent is applied. The stretch effect is caused
when the iridescence (metallic spray) splits and expands (stretches). It gives glass
both a matte finish and a shiny finish at the same time. This Lion box was part of
Fenton's Historic Collection of 1994. Base is marked with an 'F' in an oval*. May have
a Fenton label. 5 1/2" long.
Due to low quantity produced: ***RARE***
McKee Art Glass Company purchased the Lion mold in 2009 from Dodi Levi and
produced in UV reactive colors. Marked McKEE. Chris McKee still owns the mold.
* 'F' inside the oval indicates Fenton's use of a non-Fenton mold, whether it was
borrowed, consigned, or purchased from another glass company to sell as their own.
fENTON lION BOX
Fenton produced Lion Box W369 in White Milk Glass the same time they produced
their Lamb. Though the Lion dish never appeared in any Martha by Mail catalogs, the
milk glass Lion was most likely poured for Martha Stewart’s line. Lamb and Lion
dishes in milk glass have been found marked F and zero, meaning they were
produced after the year 2000. White milk glass Lamb dishes were made for Martha in
2001. With this information, we should assume this NEVER-BEEN-SEEN-BEFORE
Fenton Lion was also made in 2001.
Here, we see the rare Lion Dish. It
is identical to Westmoreland Glass’
Lion on a Picket Fence but lacks
Westmoreland’s logos or numbers
inside lid or base. Base and Lid are
marked with an 'F' in an oval with a
zero. May have a Fenton label.
fenton owl fairy light
Fenton Art Glass Owl Fairy Light #5108 was original to Fenton. First
Fenton produced the Wise Owl Decision Maker #5180 from 1968-1972.
The original Owl was a decision maker/jewelry holder with a spinning
head. A removable piece had a ring holder and three divided sections
that held jewelry or trinkets. A paper label in the center read YES, NO,
STAY, GO and WHO KNOWS. These paper labels are often in poor
condition or missing. Instructions that came with the Owl said to "simply
spin the head and watch where his beak stops. Even when the owl is not
helping you with decisions, he is still quite useful, for he was designed as
a container for a roll of stamps, paper clips or change. If you can't decide
which to store in him, ask him. He'll help you decide." Decision maker
Owl came in colors: 5180MI White Milk Glass, White Milk Glass with hand
painted eyes and beak, 5180BK Black (Dark Amethyst) and a ***RARE***
5180BJ Pekin Blue II made in 1968. The BJ stood for Blue Jade. Owl came
with a paper tag on a string. Owl is unmarked. 3 3/4" high.
Fenton Owl Fairy Light #5108 was a reissue of the Wise Owl Decision
Maker with changes. Owl Fairy Lights came in two pieces and had
holes in their heads. Owl Fairy Lights were produced from 1973-1979.
FENTON box with cover, swan
Fenton Art Glass Box with Cover, Swan #4600 is a reproduction of the original
Westmoreland Raised Wind Swan. It was only advertised in Fenton catalogs as
part of their 1992 Gold Pearl Historic Collection. In 1992, Fenton leased the
Swan mold from Gary Levi of Levay Distributing Company and produced it in
Gold Pearl. [The Gold Pearl Swan is explained in John Walk's book* this way:
"Due to the Cerium that was used in the formula to produce Gold Pearl which
reacted with the bone ash to produce the opalescent, the glass became very
brittle when cooled, making this line extremely difficult to produce. The
Covered Swan Box is extremely rare today, as not many of them were
produced intact."]
In 1992 Fenton also produced a light Blue transparent Swan, possibly Salem
Blue and a White Carnival Swan, a special promotional color in 1992. Swan lids
and bases are marked 'F' inside an oval with 9 to indicate made in the nineties.
9 3/4" long x 5 1/2" high.
