ARTISTS RECOGNIZE
PATRIOTISM ON THE
FOURTH OF JULY
States
Andrew Wyeth demonstrated this in his
painting “Independence Day 1961”.
An old black man sits on his porch in a
The Fourth of July has traditionally
signified a celebration of the success of
the experiment of a country honoring
the rights of all and yet, this past week
has been an example of the
repression and degradation of rights
and a backward direction in the
minimal achievement of basic human
rights. The most current example is
the Supreme Courts’ 5 to 4 decision
to remove the right of a woman to
control her own body. This is exhibited
graphically in Barbara Krugers poster/
painting titled, “Body is a Battleground”.
neighborhood while the stars and stripes
billows in the wind in front of him
signifying a promise that he can not
achieve.
Prior to Wyeth’s painting, Edward
Hopper created a painting of strangers
sitting in at that time, a modern cafe
with no connection between them
or their situation. The painting, “Night
Hawks”, captures a change from an
agricultural uncomplicated environment
to a metropolitan industrial environment
Artists recognize early when a society
is in decline and the platitudes of
patriotism are not reflected in the
actions and interactions of people. This
is not a new phenomenon in the United that reflects progress but loneliness and
Keys To Equality
Talia Keys’ “We’re Here” is a Call-to-Action Song
By John Stein

Talia Keys’ “We’re Here” is a powerful
song with a unique sound that
combines Reggae, Soul and Funk with
a political message reminiscent of late
greats Nina Simone and Bob Marley. It
calls for today’s queer generation to be
loud and proud in who they are and to
own their label because by simply
existing, they are changing the world
into a better place. Written and
produced by Keys, the song is
available on Apple Music, Spotify and
all digital platforms and its music video
is now on YouTube. We spoke with
Talia Keys from her home in Utah.
Talia Keys by Stefan Poulos
What inspired you to write
“We’re Here”?
Talia Keys: I grew up in Utah,
going to catholic school and
surrounded by Mormons who
devalue the existence of the
LGBTQ community. "We're
Here" is my anthem to say
we're not going anywhere and
we will never hide.
was physically and verbally
attacked on stage. It was a
blessing in disguise, really, and I
am thankful I finally came out
because I was miserable. The
truth is that I would rather play to
smaller like-minded groups than
to racist, sexist and homophobic
people. I wasn't put on this planet
to keep my mouth shut and be
background music. I was put here
to change the world. We all are.
All people simply want to
be seen and heard and to
feel they matter.
Talia Keys: Absolutely, we
want to be validated,
appreciated and quite frankly,
people want to be loved.
When politicians and church
leaders keep attacking us
and comparing our "sins" to
that of murder, we know who
to point the finger at. Jesus is
pissed. She is tired of this.
Pop urban artist Tysen Knight’s latest exhibition,
“MasterPiece MashUp,” opens July 1 at the Palm
Springs Cultural Center (PSCC). The exhibition,
which runs in the VIP lounge upstairs from July
1 to August 5, includes Knight’s latest collection
of paintings and drawings where he re-imagines
paintings by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo
Da Vinci and Grant Wood. Knight is popularly
In 2016, Knight began producing the documentary
“The Art of Hustle: Street Art Documentary,” which
follows Knight’s growth in the culture of street
art. He directed the documentary to deliver an
inspirational story about the dedication required
to achieve goals while shedding a positive light on
street art. The documentary won the “Best Feature
Film” award at the 2018 Oregon Documentary
