the rights of all and yet, this past week

repression and degradation of rights 

and a backward direction in the 

minimal achievement of basic human

to remove the right of a woman to

Talia Keys’ “We’re Here” is a powerful 

song with a unique sound that 

combines Reggae, Soul and Funk with 

a political message reminiscent of late 

greats Nina Simone and Bob Marley. It 

calls for today’s queer generation to be 

loud and proud in who they are and to 

own their label because by simply 

existing, they are changing the world 

into a better place. Written and 

produced by Keys, the song is 

available on Apple Music, Spotify and 

all digital platforms and its music video 

is now on YouTube. We spoke with 

Talia Keys from her home in Utah.

Talia Keys: I grew up in Utah, 

going to catholic school and 

surrounded by Mormons who 

devalue the existence of the 

LGBTQ community. "We're 

Here" is my anthem to say

we will never hide.

What impact did coming out 

have on your music career? 

Talia Keys: Coming out helped 

my heart, soul and mind. It did not 

help my music career. I lost about 

80% of my gigs in Utah. I have 

had my windshield kicked in. I 

was physically and verbally 

attacked on stage. It was a 

blessing in disguise, really, and I 

am thankful I finally came out 

because I was miserable. The 

truth is that I would rather play to 

smaller like-minded groups than 

to racist, sexist and homophobic 

people. I wasn't put on this planet 

to keep my mouth shut and be 

background music. I was put here 

to change the world. We all are. 

All people simply want to 

be seen and heard and to 

feel they matter. 

Talia Keys: Absolutely, we 

want to be validated, 

appreciated and quite frankly, 

people want to be loved. 

When politicians and church 

leaders keep attacking us 

and comparing our "sins" to 

that of murder, we know who 

to point the finger at. Jesus is 

pissed. She is tired of this.

Springs Cultural Center (PSCC). The exhibition, 

which runs in the VIP lounge upstairs from July 

1 to August 5, includes Knight’s latest collection 

of paintings and drawings where he re-imagines 

paintings by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo 

Da Vinci and Grant Wood. Knight is popularly 

known for his street art inspired by the works of 

famous street artists, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat 

and Keith Haring, and reflects the styles of Pablo 

Picasso and Andy Warhol. The PSCC is located at 

2300 E. Baristo Rd in Palm Springs, across from the 

Palm Springs High School. 

In 2016, Knight began producing the documentary 

“The Art of Hustle: Street Art Documentary,” which 

follows Knight’s growth in the culture of street 

art. He directed the documentary to deliver an 

inspirational story about the dedication required 

to achieve goals while shedding a positive light on 

street art. The documentary won the “Best Feature 

Film” award at the 2018 Oregon Documentary 


Film Festival. His second documentary, “The Art 

of Hustle: Homeless Street Artist,” follows three 

homeless artists as they create art to survive and 

won the “Best Director” award at the 2019 Marina 

Del Rey Film Festival. 

Along with producing street art documentaries, 

Knight was involved with the “Street Bench Art 

Pilot” project conceived by the Palm Springs Public 

Arts Commission, the City Council Downtown 

Subcommittee and Main Street Palm Springs. He 

decorated benches throughout downtown Palm 

Springs, with the theme “Urban Desert Palms 

and Icons,” which included icons such as Garland, 

Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Frida Kahlo and Lucille 

Ball.
