Poem a Week
Gary Michael Dault
“Making a poem is like making a chair; a poem is
as real as a chair and sometimes more useful.”
--Rebecca Solnit, The Faraway Nearby (New
York: Viking, 2013), p. 72.
Actually, I think making a poem is more like building
a boat.
make a poem
of sticks and weeds
aloof with
homely weave
in a forlorn
unwelcoming
pattern
make a poem
like a stubbled field
a poem on a plain
of hard-baked loam
where nothing will grow
but language
To Reduction
using only rough
bleached words
construct a poem
that will shine
like a coin
use the words left there
with never any thought
of getting back
onto a desk
at home
use words lying
in unprocessed sunlight
words lapped by waves
wetting the shore
but leaving the poem
high and dry

Tamara Chatterjee
India (December, 2016) – I often find myself
reminiscing about Sikkim; feeling a strange
sense of calm, wonder and sudden strikes of
shortness of breath. The attitude reminding
me to temper my fantastical ideas of radically
climbing towards the sky. We arrived at
Changu Lake, surprised by the number of
large construction vehicles and hoards of yak.
Back to reality and closer to sea level; I still
have flashbacks of the time I was jabbed in
the thigh by an ill-humoured and but very
photogenic yak with goofy knitted horn
warmers.

brief acquaintance with poet P. K. Leung), June 26, 2022.
