The Madison Museum of Contemporary
<strong>Art</strong> (MMoCA) Welcomes One and All to
the 64th Annual <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> on the Square
The Board of Trustees and Staff of MMoCA are excited to
welcome you to the 64th annual <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> on the Square! The
<strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> on the Square is the largest and longest-running
fundraiser for the Museum. Over the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> weekend,
fairgoers can meet nearly 500 juried artists; purchase unique
works of art and fine craft; taste sweet and savory treats
from dozens of food vendors; visit sponsor booths to learn
more about their offerings and giveaways; and take in live
entertainment on three stages. This year the full Silent
Auction tent is back, along with a lively Kids Area and the
Emerge Block, which features a dozen early-career artists,
some of whom will be exhibiting in an art fair for the very
first time.
ABOUT MMoCA
The Madison Museum of Contemporary <strong>Art</strong> offers free daily
gallery admission. The Museum’s vision is to be an
organization that fosters the exchange of ideas and creates
experiences that will inspire a wide audience; be a nexus for
the work of emerging and established regional, national, and
international artists; serve as a catalyst for the continued
development of a vigorous community of artists; and
provide a forum that will encourage people to be challenged
by, reflect on, and make connections between art and the
world around them. The Museum includes four galleries, a
rooftop sculpture garden, and The Shop, a space providing
interactive contemporary art experiences and educational
workshops for the community.

welcome the 2022 <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong>
on the Square Jurors
SHARON BJYRD
Sharon L. Bjyrd is best known for her vibrant portraits.
Self-taught, Sharon entered the art world as a second passion
after a life slowdown due to chronic illness created the space
to rediscover her love of painting. Her medium of choice is
acrylic paint, where her work touches on themes such as
diasporal culture, natural hair, body positivity, and colorism.
Sharon’s work has most recently been featured in the Honoring
the Black Woman exhibition at Madison College, as well as the
book Let’s Talk About It: The <strong>Art</strong>, The <strong>Art</strong>ists and The Racial
Justice Movement on Madison’s State Street; at MMoCA’s <strong>Art</strong>
<strong>Fair</strong> on the Square in 2019; and the historic South Side
Community <strong>Art</strong> Center, Chicago.
LIUBOV SZWAKO
Liubov Szwako is an experimental human in constant pursuit.
Born and raised in Mexico City, he is uniquely connected to
unconventional found objects, large mural works, and fine art.
His use of spray paint, acrylics, and other mediums creates
powerful patterns and shapes both undeniably recognizable
and pure. His persistent urge to paint allows him to create and
bring to life an endless stream of ideas which are often
repetitive and spontaneous.
ADAM VILLEGAS
Adam Villegas is an artist and curator from Milwaukee who
graduated from UW-Madison with a BFA focus in painting and
printmaking. While a student and post graduation Adam has
organized Pop-Up art shows and installations featuring local
artists, fashion, and musicians. He is the founder of
LivingOutUnrealDreams clothing company where he designs
and prints clothing by hand. His influences stem from his
Latino culture, Hip Hop, his childhood filled with vibrant street
art, and LOUD music.
MEGAN WIGTION
Megan Wigtion is the owner of Megan’s Custom Framing, and
Isthmus <strong>Art</strong> & Framing in Madison. Megan has been in the art
and framing industry for nearly 17 years, and loves working
with all styles of art. Megan strives to support as many local
artists as possible and allows artists to use her galleries for
shows and to display their art free of charge. Megan believes
art is for everyone regardless of income level or background.
At the age of 21, Megan opened her first frame shop and never
dreamed it would take her where she is today. “Working with
art every day is like a dream come true” says Megan.

Performances
Fans of music and dance will find another
reason to enjoy this year’s <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong> on the
Square. Nearly fifteen different groups and
individuals will perform at this year’s event,
including out-of-town acts and local
favorites. <strong>Fair</strong>goers can rest and watch
performances while enjoying a meal at the
food court on Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard, in the seating area at the top of
State Street, and on the Capitol Steps at
North Hamilton Street.

MMoCA selected Michael Rohner to be the 2022 <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong>
on the Square Featured <strong>Art</strong>ist. The featured artwork,
Milk and Honey, is a pen and ink mixed media illustration
on cold press watercolor paper. A limited edition,
archival-quality print will be available for bidding in
the Silent Auction at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Fair</strong>.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I see beauty everywhere, even when it hurts. Failure
can be an opportunity; tragedy can be a step towards
transformation. Our existential fears can prevent us from
seeing that which is in others.
I’ve lived through trauma, violent loss, and isolation.
I’ve been blessed with a very untraditional background:
immigrant parents and a stepfather, all from different
countries, along with three older sisters. Otherness,
femininity, international world views, and survival were
all woven into my upbringing. It’s a miracle my mother
made it through her fatherless childhood in post-war,
rural South Korea. The gifts she persevered to teach
me are, priceless: to see a world as I want it, not as it
is; there is wisdom in animals, and trees; and to find
happiness and joy within. My stepfather, from India, was
also adept at seeing the world with his own eyes; he
found success as an entrepreneur, filling voids in the
market. My family is loving; my half sisters raised me as
their little brother — I am filled with gratitude.
Every phase of my life — home, school, work,
community — I’ve seen through this kaleidoscopic lens.
There was always another way to look at things,
resolutions found under the unturned rock. I’ve spent
decades learning to describe this, but I’m better at
showing you how contradictory elements can exist within
the same space.
I want you to cherish your journey as I have mine. I
want you to live a life authentic to who you are and find
strength in listening to your heart. Through illustrations,
surreal expressions that capture these complex ideas;
through mixed media colorings, themselves a
representation of my patchwork foundation; through
vacating my id to allow these furry, feathered, blubbered
beasts to be, I’m sharing my truth on paper. I invite you to
share in living with feet in disparate worlds.
