The Sixth Annual CFNKLS 

TREASURE HUNT 

is OVER! 

On Monday, June 27th at 1:05 pm, sixteen-year-old 

EVAN STEINMANN of Kaslo found the treasure near a 

spur off Branch Seven Road north of Kaslo. Evan will keep 

the attractive wooden box and it’s $250 cash treasure. 

The Treasure Fund, a separate sum of approximately $2000 

made up of donations from local individuals and businesses, 

will be given by Evan to a local charity of his choice. He 

has chosen to split it between the Hospice Society of North 

Kootenay Lake and the Kootenay Lake Historical Society. 

Congratulations Evan! A full report on this year’s treasure 

hunt will appear soon on the treasure hunt website, 

www.nkltreasure.wordpress.com. 

CFNKLS (Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake 

Society) is so very grateful to all those who donated so 

generously. Hopefully the other treasure hunters enjoyed 

the experience and will try again next year.

2022 Government elections 

In coordination with Elections BC, the RDCK has released its 

schedule of significant dates and statutory requirements for the 

2022 General Local Government Election. Important dates to 

keep in mind, include: 

• August 30 – September 9 – Nomination Period. The period 

for candidates to submit their nominations to local 

election officials. 

• September 17 – October 15 – Campaign Period. The period 

begins on the 28th day before General Voting Day and 

ends at the close of voting on General Voting Day. 

• September 19 – Declaration of Election by voting or 

acclamation 

• October 15 – General Election Day 

• November – Inaugural RDCK Board Meeting

ALL NextRide Now Live 

BC Transit has launched NextRide, its Automatic Vehicle 

Location technology, in the West Kootenay Transit System. Following 

several weeks of testing and training, the new technology 

is now available to BC Transit customers. 

NextRide allows customers to see real-time bus locations 

along routes and identify what predicted arrival times are at any 

selected stop. Onboard, automated stop announcements call out 

stops to customers riding the bus, which increases comfort and 

convenience, while also improving the overall accessibility for 

many using transit. Through BC Transit, bus location data is 

provided to mobility providers like Transit App, so customers 

in the West Kootenay region can track and monitor bus routes 

using their application of choice. Please note that customers 

using Google Maps to plan their trips will experience a short 

delay in the real time data showing up as it takes several weeks 

for Google to start sharing this information. 

What is NextRide? 

NextRide is a BC Transit initiative to install AVL technology 

on buses across the province. This technology already enables 

customers across seven transit systems on Vancouver Island, 

Squamish/Whistler and in the Interior to use web browsers 

and smart mobile devices to see the location of their bus along 

its route and its predicted arrival time at an identified stop. By 

downloading the Transit App, customers know exactly when 

their bus will arrive and allow them to see how full a bus is at 

any given time. 

“Timely transit information helps residents effectively plan 

their commute to work, school, and other activities. By providing 

real-time data on bus locations and arrival times for residents, 

the expansion of the NextRide initiative will help ensure 

smoother and more timely commutes for British Columbians.

partners on public transit projects like NextRide, which will 

improve the quality of life for residents and build more sustainable 

and accessible communities.”

On the Canada Day weekend, Kaslo hosted 

the 4th Annual iDIDaRide & Run (in 6 years). 

We were so please with the participation. 

Of the 90 participants, 36% were 

from Kaslo, 24% travelled from 

Nelson while the remaining 40% came 

from Trail, Castlegar, Calgary, Quebec, 

Invermere, Utah, Winnipeg, Golden, Port 

Coquitlam, South 

Dakota, Rossland, 

Saanich, Kamloops, 

The Netherlands, 

Vancouver and 

Coldstream. 

It was a happy crowd 

that gathered after 

the events to watch 

the Slo-Race and the 

hand-made awards 

presented. 

We received rave reviews 

for our trails and the races! Kaslo you’ve 

done it again.

So much effort goes into preparing for a 

day like this. The building and maintenance 

of the trails alone takes many hours starting

Composting to launch in RDCK 

On June 21, 2022 the Regional District of Central Kootenay 

(RDCK) will officially open its new composting facility at the 

Creston landfill to support the implementation of a curbside 

organics collection program in the Town of Creston, the first community 

in the RDCK to offer this service. This is the first step in 

a multi-phase approach to implementing a RDCK wide organic 

waste diversion strategy focused on the removal of food waste 

from landfills. 

Within BC, residential organic waste makes up approximately 

35% of material sent to landfills. In the quest for zero waste, the 

RDCK’s new program will help to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) 

emissions, save landfill capacity and reduce leachate impacts. 

Leachate is the contaminated liquid running through a solid waste 

disposal site and it is difficult and expensive to manage. While the 

Creston composting facility opens this month, construction of the 

central composting facility near Salmo started in early May and is 

scheduled to be finished by October. Once operational, this facility 

will accept organic material from Castlegar, commercial sources, 

and the greater Trail areas of the Regional District of Kootenay 

Boundary. Additionally, the RDCK is working with the City of 

Nelson to obtain diversion of organics from their municipal waste 

stream resulting in equivalent GHG reductions. 

Both facilities will feature basic forced aeration composting 

technology. Collected organic waste will be received at both 

facilities in large mixing buildings. To maintain proper nutrient 

ratios, food waste will be combined with clean wood and yard 

and garden waste in a specialized mixing unit. Once mixed, the 

material will be transported to aerated windrows. Windrows are 

linear piles of organic waste and the aeration process uses fans 

connected to perforated pipes located underneath these piles. This 

system maintains oxygen and temperature levels, which promotes

active decomposition, limits odour generation, and prevents the 

piles from producing methane through anaerobic (low-oxygen) 

decomposition. The entire process takes approximately 12 weeks 

from start to finish, depending on the season, and will produce a 

safe, high quality product that can be used anywhere, including 

home gardens. 

In combination with the two processing facilities, the RDCK is 

also upgrading both the Ootischenia landfill and Grohman Narrows 

(Nelson) transfer areas to accept organic waste. Ootischenia 

will start accepting material once the Central Composting Facility 

is completed, while Grohman Narrows may be operational by the 

early fall. These transfer facilities will offer services to commercial 

haulers and allow businesses and residents to come drop it off 

themselves at a reduced fee compared to garbage. 

“Almost half the organic waste landfilled is generated by the 

commercial sector,” said Wilson. “The RDCK will be engaging 

with commercial haulers, institutions, and business to develop 

plans for incorporating organics diversion into their waste management 

programs.” 

The RDCK’s initial focus is on larger municipalities and areas 

within a close proximity to organics infrastructure, but in the 

future, the RDCK will support municipalities interested in establishing 

their own organic waste management solutions. This summer, 

the RDCK will begin the next phase of the organic waste 

diversion program, looking at a rural curbside collection program 

and seeking market information from haulers on collection costs 

for rural areas, which will inform an in-depth community consultation 

on the program in early 2023. Later in 2022, the RDCK will 

also be developing a preliminary design for an organics processing 

facility in Nakusp, and will be looking for future grant funding 

opportunities for that potential project.

Be flood prepared 

With snowpack levels the highest the province has experienced 

since 2012, the risk of flooding in the Regional District 

of Central Kootenay (RDCK) continues to increase. It is 

imperative that all RDCK residents take the necessary steps to 

be flood prepared. 

Currently the West Kootenay’s snowpack is at 128% of 

normal. With the reduced snowmelt rates, rivers, creeks and 

streams across the RDCK are flowing at seasonal to below 

seasonal levels. Weather plays a key role in whether flooding 

occurs, and cooler spring temperatures, periods of extreme 

heat, and wet weather can all exacerbate flood risk. The cooler 

temperatures through April and May have increased the risk of 

flooding if an extended period of extreme heat occurs in June. 

The key to emergency preparedness is knowing the risks and 

having a plan. Know the hazards in your area and take the time 

NOW to assemble your family Emergency Kit and Grab and 

Go Bag. Your plan should also include where you will meet if 

you need to evacuate, including moving pets and livestock to a 

safe area, in the event the situation worsens and an Evacuation 

Order is enforced. Sandbags and sand are also available for 

residents at any of the locations listed on the RDCK website: 

www.rdck.ca/befloodprepared. 

Sign up for emergency notifications, through Voyent Alert! 

The RDCK uses the mass-notification system to send out critical 

information to residents and visitors in the event of an 

emergency. Residents should also be aware that the province 

has expanded use of its broadcast intrusive system to include 

flooding and wildfire messaging. This allows local government 

and First Nations to use the service to alert residents if there is 

an imminent threat to life and public safety. This system will be 

used to amplify Evacuation Orders in the RDCK. 

The RDCK warns everyone to stay away from the edges of 

rivers, streams and creeks and report any erosion or flooding 

to the Provincial Emergency Coordinator Centre at 

1.800.663.3456. Residents and business along Kootenay Lake 

are encouraged to keep a close eye on lake levels and assess 

what impact rising lake levels may have on their property and 

be prepared in the event there is a sudden rise in lake level.

Kootenay Investment Challenge 

The Kootenay Association for Science and Technology 

(KAST) has partnered with Spring Activator to bring the Kootenay 

Investment Challenge to the region. The Challenge is a 

10-week online program, taking place this fall, that will bring 

together investment ready tech entrepreneurs and investors 

looking to make an impact in the local community. At the end 

of the Challenge, the investor cohort will select one Kootenay 

business to receive a $50,000 - $100,000 investment. 

The first of its kind for our region, the Kootenay Investment 

Challenge allows new investors (as well as experienced investors) 

to join an angel investment which is typically reserved 

for accredited investors only. The investor cohort will learn the 

fundamentals of investing, how to select businesses for investment, 

and how to conduct their own due diligence. Participating 

entrepreneurs will work alongside the investors building 

out their data rooms and developing a polished pitch. 

We are asking for your help to spread the word about this 

unique investment program. We are seeking tech entrepreneurs 

based in the Kootenays or who can demonstrate strong

The Nelson and District Arts Council and Elephant Mountain

Elephant Mountain Literary Festival event. Richard’s daughter 

Jocelyn Carver, an arts lover herself, has continued the family’s 

generous support of this award and will on hand to present the 

award. 

Jocelyn Carver, the daughter of Richard Carver and the continued 

patron of the award shares “It’s such a gift for my family to be 

able to remember my father every year, surrounded by inspired 

and inspiring authors. That the award recognizes and provides 

a platform for emerging writers is very in keeping with his love 

and support for artists of all kinds. Zaynab lifted me up with her 

poetry performance on Saturday, so the exchange is both intergenerational 

and instant! A huge thanks to NDAC and EMLF… 

local heroes all! 

After Richard passed away in 2009, the Arts Council founded 

this award, which has been awarded eight times. Children’s author 

Darcee O’Hearne was the recipient in 2013, followed by poet Jane 

Byers in 2014. In 2015 the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival 

became a partner in the award, which that year was split between 

two deserving authors, Susan Dancer and Avi Silberstein. The 

recipients in 2016 were Donna Macdonald and Alanda Greene. 

In 2017 the recipient was Diana Morita Cole. In 2018 the Carver 

Award “honoured longtime literary advocates Morty Mint and 

Ernest Hekkanen, and 2019 the award returned to recognition 

of an emerging writer, poet Rayya Liebich. In 2020 author Danielle 

LaRocque was honoured. In 2021 Sarah Beauchamp was the 

recipient of the award with an honorary mention going to Vera 

Maloff. 

Richard Carver was invested in the community as a lover of the 

arts and the Kootenays. He was a mover and shaker on the board 

of the Nelson and District Arts Council, and the primary sponsor 

of this award named in his honour. 

The Nelson and District Arts Council and Elephant Mountain 

Literary Festival would like to thank all of the nominees, nominators, 

and the jury for all their work and commitment to the 

literary scene here in the district.

With summer break around the corner, many families have added 

summer vacations to their to-do lists. Given everything that the 

world has gone through in the past few years, travelling and visiting 

new regions can still make people anxious. For many, booking a 

trip in 2022 can feel nerve-racking because it’s hard to tell when 

unusual events such as a pandemic, war or severe weather will 

impact your intended destination. 

Travel insurance can give consumers peace of mind by protecting 

their trip against potential cancelled flights or changed 

itineraries, as well as health and medical needs. Make sure your 

travel insurance covers what you think it does and avoid having 

your claims with insurance rejected because of small print you 

didn’t read or understand. 

To help you choose the right travel insurance, BBB has prepared 

the following tips: 

What to expect from your coverage and the different types of 

coverage available. While all travel insurance plans are different, all 

policies should cover certain primary risks up to a specified level. 

The key types of coverage you are likely to see in your travel insurance 

plan are: 

• Trip cancellation or delay; 

• Damage to personal items or loss of luggage; 

• Emergency medical assistance; 

• Personal liability coverage 

Understand what are provided under your coverage. 

Find out what coverage you already have on your existing insurance 

policies by contacting your insurance providers. Understand 

the difference between natural disasters and epidemics, and read 

the language in the coverage policy with caution. Find out if you 

are covered in case of illness or theft, and if that coverage changes 

when travelling internationally. This is especially important if you 

or those you travel with have health issues. 

Check with your credit card company to see what they offer. 

If you use a credit card to book your travel, typically, there is 

additional protection for those purchases. So contact your financial 

institution first to find out what type of coverage is included. You 

may also have the option of purchasing travel insurance through 

your credit card company. 

Decide whether you need additional coverage. 

Once you understand what coverage is offered through your current 

policies and credit card companies, determine what additional 

coverage you may need. Are you covered in case of medical emergencies 

on your trip? What happens if you have to cancel? Will you 

be compensated for travel or baggage delays? Consider how much 

you are spending on the trip, and if you are prepared to take on 

additional financial burdens if something goes wrong. 

Ensure you understand every detail of the agreement, 

including the reasons for trip cancellation or delay. Some travel 

insurance policies will not cover trip cancellation for health scares, 

terrorist attacks, pandemics, or bad weather. Make sure you read 

the policy thoroughly and don’t be afraid to ask questions. 

The difference between trip cancellation insurance and a cancellation 

waiver. 

Before buying travel insurance, know the difference between 

insurance and a cancellation waiver. Although waivers do provide 

some trip cancellation protection, in many cases they include more 

restrictions. 

Always do your research. Before making your final decision, 

always research the company at BBB.org. Review their business 

profile rating, and check for complaints and customer reviews.
