Maher Naji is a<br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>ian pa<strong>in</strong>ter,<br />

based <strong>in</strong> Gaza.<br />

Maher's family was<br />

forced to flee from<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Sawafer Village prior to<br />

his birth, and he was born <strong>in</strong> 1963<br />

<strong>in</strong> Jabaliya Refugee Camp <strong>in</strong> Gaza,<br />

where he f<strong>in</strong>ished his primary and<br />

secondary education.<br />

He left for Russia <strong>in</strong> 1983 to<br />

jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baron Stieglitz Art<br />

Academy <strong>in</strong> St. Petersburg<br />

and returned to Gaza <strong>in</strong><br />

1994 after receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his PhD <strong>in</strong> Arabian<br />

Architecture. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his stay <strong>in</strong> Russia,<br />

he participated<br />

<strong>in</strong> numerous<br />

exhibitions and<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

back to<br />

Gaza he has<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued to pursue his work as an<br />

artist, whilst under blockade s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

2007.<br />

Maher's artwork is <strong>in</strong>spired<br />

by his family's memories of<br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e before 1948. “He relies<br />

on his mo<strong>the</strong>r's vast details of<br />

her memories, for every l<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

shape <strong>in</strong> his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs” says Maher.<br />

His art is a means of preserv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>ian culture. “The memories<br />

I pa<strong>in</strong>t are also <strong>the</strong> hopeful<br />

visualisations of return” says<br />

Maher.<br />

The hand mill is for Maher<br />

Naji, a tool that elicits such<br />

powerful memories of<br />

<strong>the</strong> home that he was<br />

raised <strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> village<br />

of Al Sawafir, Gaza.<br />

recount<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> hand mill and<br />

<strong>the</strong> manner <strong>in</strong> which it was used<br />

to gr<strong>in</strong>d wheat gra<strong>in</strong>s as she<br />

conversed with <strong>the</strong> women that<br />

surrounded her.<br />
