County, Gary L. Gallimore is 

returning home to head up the 

grand parade at the Miami Valley 

Steam Threshers Association’s 

73rd annual reunion. 

“It’s a real privilege to be 

chosen as grand marshal,” said 

Gallimore, who has served on 

the association’s board of directors 

for 32 years, 14 as president 

and four as vice president. 

The Steam Threshers reunion 

is set for July 14-17 at 

Pastime Park in Plain City. 

The grand parade is scheduled 

for 6 p.m. July 15 and will

City. Spectators can expect to see plenty of antique 

and steam-powered farm vehicles and 

equipment. 

Born in 1955, Gallimore grew up in Plumwood 

and graduated from Jonathan Alder 

High School in 1973. After school, he worked 

at Smart Farm Equipment in Plain City then 

worked for two or three farmers. He became a 

farmer himself and owned and operated a custom 

hay bailing business for many years. He 

later moved to Logan County with Wilma 

Young who will accompany him at the grand 

parade. Currently, he 

owns and operates 

Cowpath Transport. 

As for his favorite 

make of farm equipment, 

Gallimore said, 

“I lean towards Allis- 

Chalmers, but I like 

them all.” 

He has a pulling 

tractor, an AC D21 

called “Road Rage 

Therapy,” and competes 

with the Ohio 

State Tractor Pullers 

Association in the 

super stock division. 

He should feel especially 

at home at this 

year’s Steam Threshers 

reunion as Allis- 

Chalmers is the 

featured make. Members 

of the Buckeye 

Allis Club plan to show 

up in force. 

“A lot of equipment 

and unique pieces are 

expected. They will fill 

the park,” said Ann 

Weeks, a Steam 

Threshers board member. 

As usual, the four-day event 

will feature daily demonstrations 

of a steam-powered lumber 

mill, wheat threshing 

equipment, a shingle and veneer 

mill, and more. Equipment 

of all makes and models 

will be on display. Plenty of entertainment 

is planned, as 

well. 

“This year, the touch-atruck/tractor 

includes a magician, 

face-painter and balloon 

artist. That will be a big thing. 

Most people love that for the 

kids,” Weeks said. 

The Little Darby Creek 

Band is slated to perform Friday night. The 

Re-Markie-Bellz, a bell choir, will perform Saturday 

morning. Daily steam engine parades 

will take place in the infield. 

Three types of pulls are scheduled—kiddie 

pedal pulls, a garden tractor pull, and a tractor 

pull. Last year, the garden tractor pull was 

cancelled due to bad weather. Weeks said organizers 

are crossing their fingers for clear 

skies this year. 

General admission is $5 per person, except 

after 3 p.m. July 16 when the price is $10 due 

to the tractor pull. On July 14, senior citizens 

(55 and older) and current and past military 

personnel get in for $2. Annual family memberships 

are $20, include two entry wristbands, 

and are good for the entire show. 

Children ages 12 and younger are admitted 

free when accompanied by an adult. Advance 

tickets and memberships can be purchased at 

the secretary’s office at the north entrance to 

Pastime Park July 12-13, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Mt. Sterling pulls out all the patriotic stops

The Mount Sterling Chamber of Commerce 

hosted an Independence Day parade 

on July 4. For close to an hour, a festively 

adorned crowd enjoyed the sights and 

sounds of band music, emergency horns, 

and the clattering of candy hitting the 

ground as parade entries made their way 

through the village’s downtown area. 

Waiting for the festivities to begin are (from left) Fallon Bailey, Emily Hignite, Violet Haning, 

Evan Hignite and Parker Haning. Their grandmother, Lisa Self, said they all make it 

a point to come to her home in Mount Sterling for the 4th of July parade as their route 

offers plenty of candy. “Ours is the first stop on the candy route,” she quipped.

Reay newest member 

of LCS school board

Lisa Reay looks forward 

to helping the London 

City School District 

realize its potential as the 

community grows. 

On June 28, the school 

board appointed Reay to 

fill the board seat vacated 

by Jonathan Stahl in 

May. Stahl had served on 

the board for 10 years. 

Reay was one of nine 

individuals who expressed 

interest in the seat. The 

board interviewed all nine

candidates. 

“In the end, the board felt as though Lisa 

was the candidate that best fit with the 

other members in terms of decision-making 

and outlook for the district,” said Superintendent 

Dr. Lou Kramer. 

A lifetime resident of Madison County, 

Reay graduated from Madison-Plains High 

School in 2001 and earned her bachelor’s degree 

in business administration from 

Franklin University in 2008. She works as 

a claims manager for the 

Industrial Commission of 

Ohio. 

Reay said her experience 

working for a government 

agency and in a 

team environment should 

come in handy as a school 

board member. She added 

that she has always been 

interested in education 

and, as a parent of three 

children who attend London 

City Schools, is particularly 

committed to 

seeing the district succeed. 

“My youngest is in first 

grade, so I will be invested in the district for 

a while. I want to help continue what is already 

in progress,” she said. 

Reay and her husband, Seth, live in London. 

Reay will served out the remainder of the 

board seat’s term which expires at the end 

of 2023. She joins Ashli Carter, Donovan 

Cooper, Marshall Geib and Juliet Wendler 

on the board.

HAWKES 

Mellie Theresa Hawkes, 66, born on May 19, 1956, in Columbus, 

Ohio, passed away at her home on June 28, 2022. She loved being 

outdoors, her cat Aisha, and watching T.V., but most of all she loved 

her family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Weldon Otis Hawkes 

Sr. and Martha D. Hawkes; paternal and maternal grandparents, 

William R. (Ruth) Hawkes and Lawrence (Martha) Britt; and sister, 

Cheryl D. Clark. 

Mellie is survived by: her son, Lawrence Hawkes; daughter, Cynthia 

D. Hawkes-Grubb; grandchildren, Stephany and Seth Grubb; 

sisters, Delores D. Hawkes and Tammy J. (Ed) Patterson; brothers, 

Weldon Otis (Brenda) Hawkes, Dwayne A. (Velda) Hawkes, and 

Terry L. (Kimberly) Hawkes; adopted brothers and sister, Mel, Rod, 

and Chris; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

ARTIS 

Brian Eugene Artis, 58, of London, Ohio, died on June 29, 2022, 

in Mount Carmel Hospital, Grove City. Born on Nov. 14, 1963, in 

London, he was a son of Earl Andrew and Carolyn Marie (Howard) 

Artis. 

Brian had spent his career in factory work. He was a very caring 

man who deeply loved his family in addition to taking passion in 

his work. 

He is survived by: daughter, Paige Artis, and son, Cason Gonzalez; 

grandchildren, Tailynn Frye, Todd Frye, and Hendrix Gonzalez; 

siblings, Estella “Bunny” (Harry) Lockwood, Robert (Chris) Artis, 

Lisa Artis, and Jason Artis; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; 

and best friend, Junior Miller. 

Brian was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David 

Artis. 

A celebration of Brian’s life was set for 1 p.m. July 9 at Fountain 

of Truth Ministries, 135 Maple St., London, with Pastor Tyrone 

Artis officiating.

McKINNEY 

Jack McKinney, 81, entered the light to the heavens above on 

June 29, 2022, following an extended illness. Born on Sept. 1, 1940, 

in Mount Sterling, Ohio, he was the son of the late Leo Lloyd McKinney 

and Gwendolyn Berle Bochard McKinney Kasper. 

Jack was a patriotic United States Army veteran. He took his 

basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky., and transportation supply school at 

Ft. Lee, Va. He was then stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, from 1960 to 

1963. He worked in the grocery business for over 40 years, including 

management and meat cutting. He was a devoted Zane Trace High 

School sports fan and an avid Ohio State fan. He loved WWE 

wrestling and would never miss the weekly matches on television. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Kyoko Asano 

McKinney. 

He is survived by: children, Bruce (Marilyn) Jackson of Westerville 

and Jackquelyn (Mark) Shepard of Chillicothe; grandchildren, 

Doug (Emily) Jackson of Gainesville, Fla., Jordan (Chelsie) Baker 

of Washington Court House, Trey (Maigan) Baker of Ft. Lewis, 

Wash., Hannah (Will) Chadwick of Cooper City, Fla., and Rachel 

(Joshua) Gordon of Concord, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Sophia and 

Matthew Jackson, Brynlee, Piper, Wrigley, and Juniper Baker, 

Lennon, Grey, Lincoln, and Oakley Baker, and Avery Chadwick. 

He also leaves behind his best buddy, his cat, Tinker. 

A very special thank you to his cousin and best friend, Mary 

Mason, who provided him with loving companionship for the last 

few years. Tremendous thanks to the National Church Residences 

Bristol Village Hospice, especially his aide, Dot, and nurse, 

Stephanie. Calling hours and a celebration of life service was held 

on July 7 at Porter-Tidd Funeral Home, Mount Sterling, Ohio, with 

Pastor Frank Klobucar officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant 

Cemetery.

William E. (Bill) Marcum, 82, passed away on July 1, 2022, at 

his London, Ohio, residence. Bill was also a longtime resident of 

West Jefferson, Ohio. He was born on Silver Creek in Crum, W.Va., 

on Oct. 9, 1939. 

He was preceded in death by: his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth 

(Stroud) Marcum; parents, Harmon and Blanche Marcum; and 

brother, Thomas David Marcum of Fort Gay, W.Va. 

He is survived by: his youngest brother, Charles Franklin Marcum 

of Louisa, Ky.; daughter, Carolyn (Marcum) Anderson 

(Michael) of Gibsonville, N.C.; son, Marty Lee Marcum (Bunny) of 

London; grandchildren, Stephanie Ann (Marcum) Edwards 

(Joshua) of West Jefferson, Brittany Nicole Anderson-Berney 

(Robert) of Gibsonville, N.C., and Stephen Michael Marcum of West

Ruth Ellen (Shumate) Graves 

passed away in death on June 24th, 2022. She was 

96 years old, still living in the home she and her 

husband Bill built in the 50’s, with her daughter 

and son-in law, on Alkire Rd , Columbus, Ohio. 

Her stories of growing up on the farm on Chrisman 

Rd near Mt Sterling, Ohio were a source of enjoyment 

by all her children and grandchildren. She 

was born at home to James and Christine 

Shumate. attended her high school reunion for 

Midway High School, Sedalia Ohio, the class of ’44, 

until 2017, where she received the crown for the 

oldest graduate in attendance. 

From a family of eight children: Lois, Betty, Janice, 

Mildred, Nancy, Art, and Howard, she is survived 

by Nancy Hall and Howard Shumate, of Madison 

County. Her marriage to William (Bill) Graves 

brought 4 children: Debbie, Sandy, Steve, and 

Willie and 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. 

She was adored for her unique humor. Many have 

commented on how they will miss the way she 

made them laugh because of her natural naivete. 

She was famous for her giving, kindness, and apple 

pies. As a homemaker, she was famous for her 

sewing projects, from drapes and upholstery to her 

daughter’s wedding dresses. 

Ruth treasured all that she learned about Jehovah 

God from her study of the Bible. She taught her 

children how to be a good Witness for Jehovah.
