Vehicle licencing

services halted

by fed up staff

Workers protest over unhygienic building, smell

FAITH MTWANA and

TAMMY FRAY

Buffalo City Municipality

staff at the vehicle

licencing and registration

department on Lower Oxford

Street downed tools on July 5 in

protest against the unbearable

environment and potentially

hazardous building they work

in.

Staff have to deal with an

unbearable odour that

permeates the building due to

apparent sewage leaks under

the building.

In addition, staff say there is

no ventilation, with no windows

that open.

They claim they are forced to

halt operations and evacuate the

building up to twice a month

because of the stench, halting

services.

Workers were seated outside

the building on July 5 for more

than five hours.

“We’ve been sitting outside

since 7.30pm and no-one has

told us what to do or if we can

go home or not.

“They just leave us in the

dark. No work is continuing

i n s i d e ,” said one of the workers

who did not want to be named

for fear of intimidation.

The staff say the conditions

are so bad they fear for their

health.

“The sewage [smell] is bad

and they forcing us to sit in here

with the smell and most of us

get sick.

“We end up vomiting and

this could lead to illnesses. We

have rashes on our faces

because the germs that are in

the air affect us badly.

“They take chlorine and pine

gel and throw it over everything

to disguise the smell but the

problem of the pipes has not

been fixed.”

According to staff, it has

been an ongoing problem for

more than 10 years.

The South African Municipal

Workers Union claim a health

and safety inspection by the

Department of Labour was done

at the premises years ago,

however, the union believes the

recommendations were ignored

by BCM supervisors and

managers.

The caretaker and caretaker

manager of the building insist

the problem was a burst

sewerage pipe that was fixed on

July 4.

They say the building was

cleaned and steps were taken to

insure it was sterile and any

further issues had to be handled

by building maintenance.

Go! reporters were able to

enter the building and can

confirm a very strong smell was

present throughout, particularly

in the office area.

Parts of the corridors had

been cleaned, however,

cleaning detergent failed to fully

mask the smell.

According to employees at

the electricity department at 117

Oxford Street, the problems

with the vehicle licencing

building have been ongoing for

ye a r s .

They claim staff had tried to

bring the issues to the attention

of their supervisors in the past

The GO! contacted BCM for

comment, however, to no avail.

Also suffering were the many

members of the public who

were turned away at the door

due to services being halted.

“I am leaving the country

and I need to sort out my

documents before I leave. This is

a problem,” one person said.

Border Kei Chamber of

Business chairperson Lizelle

Maurice said: “The city needs to

allocate an annual budget for

maintenance and schedule

maintenance on critical

infrastructure and make it a

priority, because substandard

buildings and the cleanliness of

facilities pose a health threat to

staff and consumer safety. Staff

morale is affected, which results

in poor customer service.”

MAKING MOVES: Freelance dancer Lanelli Meek receives the Crowd Favourite award

during the World of Dance audition series at the Guild Theatre on Saturday July 9. Buffalo

City dance studio JJDC performed ‘Leave the light on’ Picture: SUPPLIED

EC dancers wow in World

of Dance audition series

FAITH MTWANA

The Guild Theatre hosted the World Of Dance

audition series on July 9, during which Eastern

Cape dancers got to show off their talent in

various genres – from hip hop to contemporary.

The auditions were part of a national

scouting campaign in which a select group of

dancers from each region are chosen to go to

Los Angeles to participate in the global World of

Dance competition.

Participants came from East London, Port

Alfred and Gqeberha.

Jo Jackson, the founder of Buffalo City Jo

Jackson Dance Company (JJDC), said the

competition was a great opportunity for dancers

from small dance studios to compete in.

“Many of these dance studios seem to be

nervous to compete. This is a great opportunity

for the dancers and for East London to show the

world our talent.

“The judges were very impressed with what

we showed them. A group with 33 dancers

made it alongside some solo performers.

“Now we wait for the final decision to find

out who will be going overseas,” Jackson said.

The World of Dance Championship Series

has grown from a single event in Los Angeles to

a globally-renowned competition featuring the

wo r l d ’s best dance groups and schools.

The competition, which has been

successfully showcasing talented dancers for

TEEN SCENE

about 13 years, has been to more than 30

countries. It also provides a platform for other

talented artists in music, fashion and lifestyle.

Emma- Jane Victor, a dancer from JJDC,

recounted her experience performing on stage.

“It was amazing. It was great to perform on

stage with my group and to be up against the

larger groups and experience the happiness and

excitement.

“I’ve performed solo and performing in a

group is different because we have to work hard

to make sure that everyone in the group looks

the same and remembers the routine.

“We practised our three-minute routine for

15 hours to perfect it,” said Victor.

Lanelli Meek, a freelance dancer who

participated in the auditions, achieved second

and third place in his respective categories and

was voted Crowd Favourite by the East London

audience.

“It was a truly magical experience, seeing

the passionate dancers give it their all on stage

was a marvelous sight.

“It has always been a dream of mine to

perform with that WOD banner behind me.

“To perform with two of the best dancers I

know and my best friend with whom I first

started dancing with was really a full circle

moment for me,” said Meek.

After the next qualifiers, the top dancers from

all regions will qualify for the next round in

December in Johannesburg.

When three men found the body of Tonya

Hughes on the side of the road, they

had no idea t they were about to

uncover a dreadful and shocking hidden mystery

involving a father, his gruesome depravity and the

effects thereof on a defenseless child.

Girl in the Picture is a true crime Netflix

documentary that tells the story of the life of

Suzanne Maria Sevakis (or Sharon Marshal or

Tonya Hughes, depending on the period of her life

story you’re hearing about) and all the terrible and

inhumane acts that her “father”, Clarence Hughes

(who also goes many aliases) put her and her son

M i ch ael through.

A number of disturbing events, such as

abduction, rape, murder and sexual assault, are

explained in detail, so this one is not for the fainthearted.

Director Skye Borgman does a tremendous job

of deconstructing the personal life of the

perpetrator and his heinous acts, while also

shedding light on the personality and the potential

of a young victim who was robbed of the life she

could have had. The different character witnesses

of the victim share anecdotes of her life as a

friend, peer and mother and these are weaved

throughout the documentary to humanise

Suzanne and to give her a voice beyond the trope

of a victim.

The documentary does a great job of building

up suspense through its methodical reveal of the

terrible details of Suzanne’s torture, keeping

viewers narratively invested in what otherwise

would have been too difficult a story to stomach.

This is one of the best, and most wellconstructed

documentaries Netlix has produced.

The director tells the story in chronological order,

following the order in which the authorities were

able to uncover the information.

The result is a stomach-churning story of

sociopath and the damage he wrought on an

innocent life.

By the end, the documentary manages to

answer all the questions you may have had while

watching. Each of the interviews feels relevant and

provides much-needed insight into the drama.

Ex-EL star launches new

self-funded magazine

Mahashe hopes

venture will inspire

other SA creatives

FAITH MTWANA

Former East London performerturned-magazine

editorial creator

Vuyo Mahashe is once again flying

the Eastern Cape flag high on the world

stage with the launch of his self-funded

magazine Browski Magazine appearing

in print and online later this month.

The magazine is the second major

project under Mahashe’s Browski

brand, after the Browski x Swatch watch

design which saw Mahashe partnering

with Phathu Designs and showcasing

his design at the Dubai Expo.

Mahashe began his career as a

dancer and a choreographer but has

since branched out into the design

space.

“I just wanted to try something new

and in doing so I found a new passion.

Browski Magazine is a way for me to

give authentic South African creative

artists like myself an opportunity to

showcase their crafts.

“It will include articles about the

work that some artists are doing, as well

as interviews with these artists so they

can explain the meaning behind their

wo r k ,” he said.

Mahashe explains that the Browski

Magazine is more than just a small

passion project for him as he hopes to

use it to inspire artists to reach for their

dreams.

“At the beginning of July, I decided

to self-fund and publish my first

magazine, and put every last penny I

earned from touring with Pina Bausch’s

Rite of Spring towards this new dream.

Nowadays dreams are very expensive,

which is why I hope the public will

delight in this magazine and look

through its pages to dream, explore,

research and to live. I want them to be

inspired and not just pass time.”

Another big achievement for

Mahashe is his acceptance into the

foundation year of the Bachelor of Fine

Arts degree at the Paris College of Art.

“My acceptance into Paris College of

Art has been a dream come true. Paris is

a dream destination and the fact that I

get to call it home for the next couple of

years is wild to me.

“I received a partial scholarship to

study and I have started a GoFundMe

campaign to help me pay for my flights,

accommodation, tuition and study

m a t e r i a l s ,” he said.

Mahashe has planned for the

magazine to be of high quality, likening

it to high-profile magazines like Vogue.

The launch of the magazine, Vol1,

will also coincide with the launch of a

brand new Browski Tote bag. Both

launches are set for mid-July and early

August respectively.

Top SA magician on

FAITH MTWANA

Master magician Bryan King has

“I have grandkids too and

I’m always looking for fun things

for them to do,” said King.

“I am hoping this show will

provide some holiday fun for

East London audiences,

especially now during the

holiday period.”

King, who has been a

magician for 64 years, said

interest in magic had changed

over the years.

He said magicians were

becoming more “mainstream”

and entering international

competitions such as America’s

This meant magic shows

were becoming highly popular

said.

“Even when you are older

it’s real or not, unless we make a

He will be receiving

GOING PLACES

Mkumatela is excited to

Mkumatela confirms that he

is excited although he may

be expected to leave home

His mother, Phaphama

Njikelana, says this

opportunity has been her

it would be separation from

her and the rest of the family,

she believes she cannot stand

in the way of his dreams.

Mkumatela is an admirer

of Cristiano Ronaldo on the

basis of the player’s work

ethic and he believes that

through emulating Ronaldo

he will be able to achieve

similar success.

Currently the family has

to cover expenses for the trip

they are appealing to local

Selbornians return triumphant from Ubuko run

TAMMY FRAY

During Selborne College’s 150th year,

the school’s efforts to raise funds for

prosthetic surgery and rehabilitation for

student, Ubuko Mpotulo, has swept

across the province rendering Selborne

College a flagship school for social

change in the country.

Educator and co-founder of Sport for

Lives, Jonathan Kruger, says that the

school has devised multiple streams

through which to fundraise for Mpotulo,

and that at every level of school activity,

the pupils have means of contributing

towards the funds for the surgery.

Returning from their 300km run from

Grey College to Selborne College to

raise funds, Kruger said that the

intention behind using school activities

for social good is to introduce pupils to

the reality of economically divided

instability in SA.

Kruger said: “Sometimes the pupils

don’t know that SA is the most unequal

society in the world.

“When I was in Grade 10 at

Selborne, our teachers took us to

Duncan Village. To see children living in

shacks changed my perception on what

I have and what I can do to help other

With 100% of the school’s tuckshop

proceeds going to Mpotulo as well as

sporting initiatives such as “Tries for

Ubuko” and “Goals for Ubuko” hosted

by the rugby and soccer first team, the

school encourages the public to

continue pledging their support by

committing one rand for every kilometre

Spay a Stray wins Inspiration Awards for

valuable service to community, animals

TAMMY FRAY

Founder of Spay a Stray, Louise

Impey, was crowned the 2022

winner of the East London

Inspiration Awards at a c e r e m o ny

held on July 8.

The Inspiration Awards,

founded in 2012, are organised in

collaboration with local

stakeholders who aim to highlight

people and organisations that

contributing to social change in

and around the Buffalo City area.

Spay a Stray aims to curb

overbreeding and the neglect of

domestic animals in East London.

The NPO sterilises female dogs

and cats in townships and

impoverished areas in East London

and provides medical treatment,

food and kennels for dogs in need.

In addition, Impey offers

training and workshops to educate

people caring for domestic animals

as well as the dangers to animal

the organisation’s much-needed

wo r k .

Spay a Stray is the first animal

welfare-related organisation to

have reached the finals for The

Inspiration Awards and is

subsequently the first to have won

the top accolade.

In the running for the prize were

three other organisations, Nyara

Youth Development, Clean Slate

and Love My Community.

Nyara Youth Development,

based in Mooiplaas, is the only

organisation in the area equipping

the youth with skills such as digital

literacy, as well as connecting the

area to wi-fi to enable young

people to apply for employment

and upskill themselves through

online courses.

Clean Slate works to undermine

prejudice against ex-offenders that

keeps them from being reintegrated

into social systems such as

e m p l oy m e n t .

Greenfields residents in and around

Reitz, Hampstead and Jan Smuts

avenues gathered at a community

meeting on July 6 to express their

objection over local business Ukhozi

Gaming having applied for a liquor

licence.

Situated at 3 Reitz Avenue in

Greenfields, opposite well-known

Ta s h a ’s pub and grub, Ukhozi Gaming,

which provides gambling, leisure and

entertainment facilities, has been in

operation for a year.

The residents are objecting to the

liquor licence on the grounds that with

five existing liquor outlets in the

immediate area, a sixth wo u l d

contribute to increased crime, violence

and disruption in the area.

At the meeting, Ukhozi Gaming

partner Wayne Krenski, said: “Pe o p l e

want to be able to just come to our place

and relax do some sports betting and

have a drink or two.”

Krenski said Ukhozi Gaming wa s

intended to be a respectable

entertainment facility in the area,

dissimilar to existing “run-down, backstreet

taverns”. He said the business also

contributed to the area’s economic

growth by providing jobs, as well as

contributing to gaming taxes.

Greenfields Community Policing

Forum member, Herman Goosen, said:

“People buy their alcohol and consume

it outside in the street and break bottles,

and get intoxicated and start fighting.

“Just yesterday [ July 5] we had

violence here with three people

stabbed. It’s an on-going problem we

have. The youth from George Randall

Primary see these things on a daily basis

and they tend to think this is the norm.”

The residents complained that liquor

outlet patrons left litter strewn around,

which community members had to

clean up. They also believe Krenski will

not be able to keep a firm enough grip

over his patrons should liquor become

available on the premises.

Greenfields ward councillor Shandre

Hoffman said there was some confusion

between the town planning office and

the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting

Board, as town planners insisted Reitz

Avenue was not zoned for a business

with an entertainment licence yet one

was issued to Ukhozi Gaming in 2021.

EAST LONDON

W E AT H E R

Weather in East London over the next seven days

remains fairly sunning although with the chilly

wind continuing to make jerseys and jackets a

necessity in the early mornings and late

afternoons with freezing cold evenings.

Thursday will be a mild day with cloudy

overcast for most of the day though rain will not

fall.

Friday will be sunny with minimal cloud voer

however warm clothes remains a necessity as the

temprature averages at 20°C. The weekend will

be another warm one in the sun as both Saturday

and Sunday give us two of the warmest days of

the winter season thus far with tempretures

reaching 25°C on Saturday and 28 on Sunday.

Weekends thus far into July have presented great

afternoons free of rain and hopefully this

weekend continues this trajectory.

Monday returns and with it colder weather as

the tempreture drops down four degrees to 24. As

the temprature climbs lower, Tuesday brings with

it rainy conditions and cloud cover with the

highest temprature reaching 23°C.

Wednesday brings with it warmer conditions

however the temprature remains in the low

twenties at 21°C.

tunnels providing

a healthier future

SIPHOSIHLE DYONASE

In late 2021, the Buffalo City

Metropolitan Municipality

introduced hydroponic farming

tunnels in various villages in the

Buffalo City metro and last

month, infrastructure and

training was provided for the

Duncan Village community.

East London agricultural

graduates such as Unathi

Mgcebele are inspired to

develop this approach to

farming in the region to help

alleviate food insecurity and

economic instability.

Mgcebele, 27, recently

obtained a diploma in

agricultural management from

Nelson Mandela University and

is currently an intern at INMED

Aquaponics.

He said growing up, rural life

had been slightly different for

him as he was not allowed to

assist his parents in the fields

where they grew crops.

“It confused and intrigued

me. There came a time when

nobody planted crops in fields

any more because so many of

the youth left the rural areas to

live in townships and look for

wo r k ,” he said.

Mgcebele said his concern

over the negative effect of

fertilisers on human health and

the soil was one of the reasons

he ventured into agriculture,

with a special interest in

alternative forms of farming.

“I wanted to gain knowledge

about organic farming methods

and share these with my

community and spread the

word about the importance of

organic fertilisers.

“INMED and NMU helped

me realise this vision and fueled

my passion for adaptive

agriculture, including teaching

me about organic insecticides.”

BCM and graduates such as

Mgcebele have turned to

alternative farming methods

such as hydroponics which are

better for the health of arable

soil and prevent the spread of

soil-borne diseases.

It also prevents arable soil

from running off into water

systems, and nutrients used in

the process of hydroponic

growing can be recycled.

Mgcebele is now studying

towards an advanced diploma in

agricultural management and is

also aiming for his honours.

“I’m saving money to start

aquaponics farming in rural

areas and would love to see

hydroponics and BCM expand

its programme countrywide. “My

advice to others interested in

agriculture is to have passion,

develop your interest, work hard,

continuously seek knowledge

and learn from people who have

e x p e r i e n c e ,” he said.

BCM said the hy d r o p o n i c

Selborne College’s ‘Beast’

Romans to represent SA

Teen off to Uganda for Africa champs, Finland for world champs

TAMMY FRAY

Selborne College’s

“Breece the Beast”

Romans, the current

fourth-best motorcross rider

in the country, has been

selected to compete at the

FIM Africa Motorcross of

African Nations continental

championship in Uganda

during August.

Romans, 17, has been

racing competitively for half

a decade now and received

his first South African junior

blazer for motorcross in

2018. In 2019, Romans

represented SA in

Zimbabwe but when Covid

struck in 2020, racing

internationally was

interrupted and he was

forced to commit to

practicing in his own

Thrills and spills in round 4 of karting championship

NEIL STEPHEN

Saturday July 2 was a beautiful day

for racing in Buffalo City, as record

fields not seen since before Covid

turned out to fight for honours at

round 4 of the Border Karting

championship. In the Bambino’s

division, Arabella Krause once again

dominated, qualifying with two

easy wins in the first two heats.

But then, in a selfless act of

sportsmanship, she throttled back in

the third heat to coach newcomer

Carter van der Westhuizen, who was

elated to take the win. Odin

Thompson came in third.

Lincoln Randall took pole

position and three easy wins. Behind

him Redd Scholts and Myles Krause

traded places in the Mini Rok Class

in fiercely fought heats, with the

quickest lap going to Krause, and the

overall win going to Scholtz.

Sister Arabella came in third

ahead of Traiton Boshoff.

In the Senior clubman’s division,

Mornay Swanepoel took the overall

win ahead of Ashton Nel, Juan

Venter and Greg Thompson. Ty l e r

Stephen finished second on the road,

winning the Junior Class ahead of

Luke Swanepoel.

this year, he has spent

among others.

The track in Gqerberha is

four-stroke series with similar rules.

Hopefully this will be the beginning

of more interaction between the two

clubs going forward.

Gqeberha’s Pieter van Heerden

showed why he is dominating in the

city by immediately being on pace,

taking pole in the Masters Class as

well as the overall pole in an

impressive field of 20 competitors.

Border took the next five grid slots

with Rebecca van der Westhuizen

putting in a brilliant lap to place her

on the third row among the top

contenders in the class.

The four-stroke race was the

event of the day and Van Heerden

took full advantage of the dog fight

going on behind him to make a

clean getaway in all three heats,

winning the Masters Class ahead of

Luke Philips, with local boy Dillon

Bursey restoring Border’s honour

with a fine third place.

Gqeberha chair Clinton Moss

found himself in the midfield at the

mercy of Demi Potgieter, as they

disputed the same section of tar, with

Potgieter prevailing. She later went

on to win the “Farmer of the Day”

award for her several excursions to

the infield during the day.

The Senior Class was dominated

by Border, with TKY’s Derek Pratt

winning and Calvin Reabow taking

secnd ahead of Grant van Heerden.

He says, “we had to go

up four weeks in a row to

practice on that track in

Gqerberha but you can

never fully prepare for it

because it’s a sandy surface

so it keeps changing

depending on the weather

conditions. You don’t really

know what the bike is going

to do but you just have to be

up for it, you can’t afford to

be scared.”

So far for the season,

Romans’ performance has

remained consistently

within the Top 5 national

riders. However at the races

in Bloemfontein he finished

15th as a result of a crash.

Despite this he is

undeterred for the

championships ahead and

says, “motorcross is a mental

sport because if you come

into it with a bad energy and

a bad vibe it’s not going to

be very fun for you, so you

can’t think about falling

because if you think about it,

it will happen.”

In preparation for the

championships, Romans has

to maintain his performance

through regular practice as

well as diet and physical

conditioning, balancing

these sporting demands with

school work.

In future, he hopes to

continue riding but is also

committed to completing his

education at a tertiary

institution, saying that racing

locally is not as financially

lucrative as a contract

abroad because the sporting

code is more developed in

other parts of the world.

Brett Romans, Breece’s

father, says: “Allmans Racing

is the biggest sponsor for

Breece, but if there are any

private individuals or

companies willing to help

Breece get to Uganda via

sponsorship, that would be

most welcome.

waterpolo players

return from Fina

The South African ladies waterpolo side returned

triumphant on July 4 after placing 13th in the Fina

2022 World Championships in Budapest.

Competing against 191 other nations, SA’s 13th

position is historical for the nation and is testament

to the hard work the side put into preparing for the

ch a m p i o n s h i p s .

Assistant coach, Paige Meecham, said that the

playoffs towards the end of the tournament

revealed her side’s commitment to working as a

team as it was only through their collective effort

that they were able to hold out over the Brazilian

side to win 13th position overall.

This year’s South African side is made up of

young players with a few as young as 17 years old.

This proved to be an advantage and top goal

scorer of the tournament, Chloe Meecham, said

that the side was malleable and worked hard in the

training camps prior to the tournament to perfect

their strengths and prepare a strategy for effective

g a m e p l ay.

Chloe scored the opening goals of the

tournament for SA against the US side and the

closing goal for SA against Brazil.

The US side claimed tournament champions

followed by Hungary and the Netherlands in both

second and third place respectively.

Paige comments that Argentina and France,

who finished 12th and eighth respectively, have

improved greatly due to their off season

p r o g ra m m e s .

This momentum is what Meecham and head

coach, Delaine Christian, hope to maintain for the

rest of this year’s season as well as throughout the

preparations for the 2024 Olympic Games.
