News From Teakwood Village Main Office
By John Houle
___________________________________________________________________________
I thought
I would fi ll everyone in on what’s going on around the Village. The new
privacy fence is completed behind K-Mart and Babcock Furniture. The pool equipment
at the East pool will be replaced this month. The West pool will be open during
the closure, so East residents feel free to enjoy it. Last month we had a professional
shuffl eboard resurfacing company come in and grind down and replace all the surfaces
at both shuffl eboard courts.
Vinyl siding work is being done around the park by Ray this summer. For those who have
an interest in having this done, please call the offi ce and ask about the 0% fi nancing.
Both lakes will be inspected by a lake and pond company which will be checking and
monitoring the fi sh and seaweed levels. As many of you know I’m an avid fi sherman and conservationist.
I want to make sure both lakes continue to remain pristine and healthy.
Teakwood Village is your home so if you ever have any suggestions or need any help,
don’t be afraid to let me know. My door is always open.
Young At Heart News
Submitted by Barb Wautlet
___________________________________________________________________________
Beginning in November we will be directing our time, money and effort to Largo
Middle School. The school has put out a threefold brochure entitled “Partnership
at Largo Middle School,” and I would like to share with you the section on
“Becoming a Partner in Education.”
Your business, professional organization, club or family can become a partner in education
with Largo Middle School in three different ways:
1. With a donation of $25.00, $55.00 or $75.00 and above, you can become a monetary
partner. Your donation will be used to provide items that could not be purchased
because of budget restraints. There are many departments in our school that need
special attention, including Science, Language Arts, Model Exceptional Student
Education (ESE), Physical Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL), and Music and Art Programs.
2. You can become a materials partner. Our school material needs are endless, including
books, visuals, special learning items, and classroom.
3. You can become a manpower partner. By volunteering yourself as tutors, mentors,
School Advisory Council members, guest speakers or judges for a special school
event, your donated time would greatly benefi t our school.
As you can see, Largo Middle School has laid out their goals and objectives with great
care. Next fall it will be the task of our committee to focus on our goals and objectives to make
the biggest impact with the funds we have available to donate.
A big thank you to those who volunteered their time to Mildred Helmes Elementary School
as judges for their Science Fair on Thursday, May 13. Hugh & Joyce Austin, OC Hansford,
Carol McClure, Shirley Rice, Roland Lausier, Bob LaParte, Sade Des Jardins, Jeannine
Lajoie, Martha Wheatley and Harold Voigt. Joyce Austin wrote a thank you e-mail to the
school for the lovely lunch that was provided and then added, “I think I can speak for all of
us from Teakwood, that judging the science project was a nice experience. We were amazed
at the early learning that is taking place today in our schools compared to the way we were
taught many years ago. Science and math are so important in many career fi elds, so advancing
the children’s thinking in those areas is a defi nite plus.
Next month’s article will give you information on other ways you can become a Partner
at Largo Middle School.
Blessings to all. I miss Koffee, I miss my bike, I miss all of you!
(From Publisher: Our sincere apologies for misplacement of the picture shown on page
27 last month. It should have appeared with the "Young at Heart" article in the May issue.)
Computer Class News
_____________________________________________________________________
____________________________
Our season is coming to a close. By June 1
the lab will be closed down for summer and
reopen as usual October 1. Jeff has been occasionally
cleaning the lab fl oor and my bulging lumbar
discs sure appreciate not having to do it myself. Due
to recent donations from Sharon Miller and Flo Monk
we have newer computers that makes three fairly new ones out of the four we always
seem to have. Everything seemed to stay up and running better this season than ever.
Francis Cormier and Sharon Miller volunteered their time to teach us more on cameras
with computers and Word. It was great to receive nicely organized folders with step by
step information from Sharon. This folder and books and other printed information, also
discs are available for lending to residents of Teakwood. Just see Marty or me or call.
Speaking of volunteers, the computer club owes many thanks to Aggie Moser for
heading up our fundraiser this winter. Not only was it her idea, but she made soup and
sandwiches and enlisted her sister and cousin and lots of folks who didn’t even belong to
computer club to help make the effort a huge success. About the only thing Marty and
I had to do was help serve (which folks seemed to really appreciate, not him but being
served) and I was mistress of ceremonies and we provided the majority of door prizes,
except for all the bottles of wine. There again, the wine was donated by a few residents
not members of the club! Ceil Turkington donated wine and sold our fi fty-fi fty tickets
and the Faddens donated wine along with Aggie, as if she wasn’t doing enough. Aggie’s
cousin, Kathy Huck, made a beautiful fl owered embroidery piece, which was raffl ed off
and proceeds donated to club. Unfortunately, I did not win it. The funds fi lled our coffi
ns for awhile to come. I know I haven’t mentioned all the helpers but goodness, club
members were on hand, we had our Teakwood karaoke singers who surprised everyone
present with their talent. We heard only favorable responses and some pleas to do it again.
Membership was back up this year with several new residents from Teakwood
East and West. We hope to continue doing well, trying to provide what we can for our
members and encouraging any residents who would like to do so to join us. Check out
our corner for information, numbers to call, etc. Find the lab in Tiki Hall East.
Marty is headed to Oregon in July on his new BMW motorcycle and we may go
to Vermont for a long weekend. Of course, we will be primarily spending time with
children and grandson and hoping to sell our last house in Virginia. A few other trips
and before you know it we will be back in Aloha visiting with our Teakwood friends.
Have a great summer! Everyone stay well, be active, stay cool.
From Joyce Parker
It may have been a Mother’s Day Luncheon, but what made it
special was the Teakwood Village fathers. The adorable kitchen
staff, headed by Roland Lausier, included Claude LaJoie, Bob
LaPorte, and Hugh Austin. Also adding greatly to the whole luncheon
were the Dining Room Angels who served the meal: Ray
Carreira, Marty Feinstein, Bert Boyer, Jerry Yetter, Bill Gagnon,
and our newest home owner, Lionel Gagne. Thank you, Boys!
I must also mention Harriet and Estelle who came to my last
cry for help, and rescue me they did! Thank you, Girls!
And one last note of thanks goes to Harold Voigt, Paul Fadden,
Hank Sauer, and Bert Boyer for handing out the fl owers to all the
women at the luncheon.
A Note from the Social Club Board of Directors and Chairpersons
We want to thank you for your support this past year, and we wish everyone a very pleasant
and healthy summer. Until we meet again in the fall as one happy family, drive safely and carefully.
From Jim and Betty Flanary
We would like to thank everyone for your prayers and sympathy after our son Jim’s accidental
death. The loss of a child is beyond words, but our wonderful memories will keep
us going. Also, a special ‘thanks’ to Claire Kanan for keeping everyone informed about his
condition while he was in the hospital. We are truly glad to live in a community like this where
everyone cares. Many, many thanks.
From Flo Monk
Thanks to all my Teakwood friends for their get-well cards. It has been quite a different
life with lots of changes for me. I am still getting some therapy, but I am also doing well. It
would have been my 31st year in Teakwood this coming February! Thank you again, your
friend, Florence Monk.
Pet Peeves
___________________________________________________________________________
I need
some input from you out there in order to make a future column. So far I’ve
only had two responses. So dig into your memories and try to fi nd something relatively
small that makes you want to scream and climb the walls. It might just make
for a good giggle.
If you can fi nd something, give me a call at 581-5270 or email largomarty@tampabay.
President’s Message
By Steve Gillis
_____________________________________________________________________
__________________________________
June has arrived and warm weather too,
especially in Teakwood. With so many
people going home for the summer, I am
sure it is very quiet in the park. There are summer
events planned for the full time residents
and Buffy is looking after coordinating these
events. If you can help at one of these events,
please give her a call.
Mother’s Day has come and gone and next up is Father’s Day this month. I hope
all the mothers enjoyed their special day and that the fathers enjoy theirs.
With a lot of people not in the park during the summer, it is nice to know that our
full time neighbors are keeping a watch out for us. If you do see anyone give the Largo
Police a call. We have the Neighborhood Watch operating in the park but Guy and his
team should not be expected to handle something like this.
Hope you all enjoy your summer.
Teakwood West Neighborhood Watch
By Guy Shreck
_____________________________________________________________________
____________________________
Now that we’re into our summer months, let’s
all keep an eye on our neighbors’ homes and
a lookout for any suspicious activity in the
park. If you see anything that looks suspicious - any
criminal activity, people trespassing, or an open or
damaged door or window call the Largo Police -
587-6730. With your help, we can deter crime in our
neighborhood. Also, remember to lock your house,
shed, car, bicycle, etc. Also, have you noticed how
many people have started speeding in the park? Just a
reminder that the speed limit in the park is 10 MPH.
We sure wouldn’t like someone to get hit because
the speed limit was ignored.
Hurricane Season Information
_____________________________________________________________________
As we all know, summer residents need to prepare for the possibility of a hurricane
heading our way. Please read the information provided on the inside back
cover of this newsletter.
Food Bank
_____________________________________________________________________
Our contributions to the RCS Food Bank to date has reached 8562 pounds!!!
Thank you to all the residents who remember to bring their non-perishable food
items to the clubhouse. It is so badly needed by those in the community less
fortunate than most of us (see list on the board of items most needed). RCS also accepts
food coupons - you can drop them in the slotted box in the clubhouse. This month’s
Can Bingo will be held on June 19 - see board for details.
Teakwood West Picnic
Apr. 17, 2010
Buffy Handville
_____________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________
We couldn’t have
asked for a more
perfect day for our
annual picnic at Taylor Park.
Our able griller, Earl Jones,
had the hot dogs cooked to
everyone’s satisfaction by the
time all the accompanying
dishes were spread out on the
tables. And what a spread it was! In addition to the hotdogs, our picnickers chose from
a variety of salads, fruit, and desserts. After eating, many chose to take a walk around
the lake, others played games, and some just sat and talked.
But, oh dear, there had to be one glitch - Buffy forgot plastic glasses. Lorraine
and Richard Sturtz very kindly offered to run to the store to pick some up - thank you,
thank you for doing that.
Taylor Park is an ideal setting for picnics and everyone agreed we should have it
there again next year.
Mother’s Day - May 9, 2010
Buffy Handville
_____________________________________________________________________
Several of our Teakwood ladies were served a Mother’s Day treat at the clubhouse
to commemorate their special day. Don Langworthy, Art Doucette, Don Cooke,
and Ron Zajchowski served as hosts - setting up the tables, trimming the long-stem
roses which were handed out to the ladies as they arrived at the clubhouse, mixing the
punch, and serving the cake and ice cream. The service was exemplary with the women
sitting back and being treated like royalty.
Now ladies, the men did such a wonderful job serving us, we’ll have to reciprocate
with something special for Father’s Day.
Stars of the West
By Lorraine Sturtz
_____________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________
Don and Eleanor (Ellie) Cooke
greeted me warmly for our
interview at their lovely home,
128 Redwood. They spend their summer
in their condo in Malden, Mass and
were packing for an early departure. A
family celebration in the works, and
with four grandchildren, they do not
want to miss a thing.
Don was in the U.S. Army for
22 years and saw action in both the
Korean and Viet Nam wars. They were
stationed in many interesting places in
Europe and the U.S. In the early part of his career he trained boxers and was one himself.
He was stationed in San Francisco, California and his ring name was Chico Valdez.
During that time he had a chance to box for charity in the Cow Palace in Daly City. He
did a three round Exhibition Match with the great Rocky Marciano!! (There are photos
I hope to see in October.) Though he did not make boxing a career, he has many more
stories and great memories. The names of Iron Mike Pusateri, Tony DeMarco and Paul
Bender were ringing in my ears. He is a member of the National Veterans Boxers Association,
Ring 4. Out of all the positive and negative events of war and service, Don
witnessed an historical event that fi lled his heart with great emotion -the Prisoners of
War from the ship The USS Pueblo were released and Don witnessed them walking
across the Freedom Bridge at the 38th Parallel. Oh what a joyous celebration must have
taken place that day!
After Don retired from the Army he changed the uniform color and went to work
11 years for the Sheriff’s Department as a Corrections Offi cer. After trying retirement
for a second time, Don found a third job working at the Boston Stock Exchange for a
short time.
Meanwhile Ellie was busy with interesting careers of her own. Over the years
she worked for Malden Publications and the well-known David Brickman. She also
enjoyed other positions with the Malden Chamber of Commerce and City Hall. During
those years a son and daughter were part of the picture so Ellie had her hands full with
family, work and community activities. ....continued on page 27
Anywhere Ellie lives, her two favorite places are libraries and nature preserves or
parks. She’s a big fan of the new Eagle Lake Park in Largo. She loves to walk and is
one of our ‘early morning walkers’ here in Teakwood, easily identifi able around 7:30
a.m. by her travel mug of morning coffee. Has always loved jazz music - particularly
Brazilian Jazz. She’s a voracious reader and jokes about preferring to run out of food
before running out of a book to read.
Ellie and Don have been married 53 years and have owned in Teakwood since
1989. In 1998 they began taking Florida seriously and now spend most of the year here.
Don’s brother Gary and wife Pauline live in Teakwood East and Ellie has a sister that
lives in Largo. They enjoy family in both areas, so life is good!
Thanks Don and Ellie for a peek into your memory bank. Be sure you make some
great new ones this summer.
Over the summer, the coffees on the fi rst and third
Tuesday will continue. Our numbers are small,
but it is still good to get together and enjoy coffee
and donuts with our friends and neighbors. Also,
this month, we’ll honor the men in the park with a Pie
and Ice Cream on Father’s Day - served by the ladies
in the park.
For those of you who like to play games, we have
Progressive Rummy on Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.,
Dominoes on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and Pinochle on
Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Friday is Wii bowling day, and
if you’d like to join in the fun, there is a sign up sheet
on the bulletin board. We schedule a dinner or lunch out
on the third Thursday of every month (let me know if there is a favorite restaurant you
would like our group to visit).
Next month will be our annual Fourth of July function. Not sure what is planned,
but Lorraine Sturtz has agreed to chair it. Watch for details on the board or in next
month’s issue of the Tidings (our newsletter name).
Coffee Hour - Tuesday,
June 1 and 15 - 9:00 a.m.
_____________________________________________________________________
_________________________
Join us for coffee and donuts and some early morning
conversation with your neighbors. In addition,
you’ll learn of any changes in our monthly activities.
During the summer, we’re fewer in number, but still
enjoy meeting with our friends and neighbors.
A note to our new neighbors in Teakwood West.
First of all, WELCOME. We would very much like to
meet you at our morning coffees held on the fi rst and
third Tuesday of every month. We gather in the clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. for fellowship
and donuts. This is a great way for you to become acquainted with your Teakwood West
neighbors. There is no charge – residents submit donations throughout the year to help
cover the costs. Bring your own coffee cup and if you want to take a chance on winning
one of the Share the Wealth prizes, bring a dollar for three tickets.
NOTE: During the summer we are asking for volunteers to host Coffee Hours. It
involves setting up the tables, plugging in the coffee pots, picking up the donuts from
Dottie VanZandt (those delicious donuts will be delivered to her at 6:15 in the morning!!!
- thank you, thank you, Dottie for doing this from those of us who like to sleep
in a little later). After coffee, just wipe down the tables and clean up the kitchen and
you’ll be done. EASY!!!! Nell Walworth has volunteered to host the coffees in June;
Lorraine Sturtz in July; and Sherry Hartel in August - we still need volunteers for the
months of September and October. Call Buffy if you would like to serve as a host or
hostess for one or more of these months.
Saturday Night Bingo
Guy Shreck
_____________________________________________________________________
Summer Bingo on Saturday night is going strong and everyone is invited to join
in the fun. Bingo starts at 7:00 p.m. sharp, so arrive at the clubhouse by 6:30 to
give you plenty of time to get your sheets, settle in and get ready for your chance
to win. An added attraction is Can Bingo held on the third Saturday of every month.
Hope to see you all there for an enjoyable night.
York Yankee banners on Bill Liebler’s home. (Bill these three banners aren’t going to help the
Yankees this year.)
The 6-foot vinyl fence that runs from Rosery and in back of Mandalay and across to the
back of Buccaneer and down Buccaneer to Golden Gate will be complete by the time you read
this. It looks very nice and will be a great upgrade for those on those streets.
Your TMHA board wants to remind all of you to keep your property looking good this
summer and to register your guests at the offi ce (read your prospectus for details). Eight violation
letters have been sent in the past few weeks regarding infractions.
Have a great summer.
Hurricane Preparedness –
What You Can Do Now
_________________________________________________________________________
____________________________
It’s not too early to start getting ready in case a
hurricane comes this way. You can prepare by doing the
following (don’t wait until a hurricane watch is issued –
do this now):
Shelter: If we are ordered to evacuate – will you
go to a friend’s or relative’s house, a hotel, or a shelter? If you have special medical needs,
make sure you are registered with the Largo Fire Department or Pinellas County Emergency
Management (464-3800). If you will be going to a shelter, have a folding chair, blanket, pillow,
medications, special dietary needs, and books, puzzles, or games ready to go.
Important Papers: Take your insurance, banking, and other important papers with you
or store them at a secure location. Include an inventory of your possessions and pictures or a
videotape of them for insurance purposes. Also a back-up of your computer fi les.
Automobile: Keep your car’s gas tank topped off during the summer (gas pumps will
not work if electricity goes out).
Cash: Have a supply of cash – ATM’s will not work if electricity goes out.
Medications: Fill prescriptions and remember to take your medications with you.
Home: Before you leave, store all outside furniture, potted plants, bikes, etc. in sheds or inside
your home. These will become missiles if left outside. Put awnings down and secure them. Turn
off your water supply and electrical breakers to prevent potential damage.
Contacts: Let friends and relatives know where you plan to stay and establish an outof-state
contact so everyone can check in after the storm.
Emergency Kit: Pack a kit with clothing, fl ashlight, portable radio, batteries, toiletries,
hand sanitizer, trash bags, fi rst aid items.
Food and water: Take enough water and non-perishable (remember the non-electric
can opener), as well as paper towels, paper plates, and utensils to last at least a week.
Follow the advice of the Emergency Management Offi ce provided by radio or television
stations regarding evacuations. DO NOT stay in your mobile home.
