Letter from the Director
Hans on the Latest and Greatest New Intros
Wow! Are we ever excited about our new line-up for 2022-2023! There
are over 75 new items for the new Walters Catalog. We have worked with
some of the worlds leading plant breeders as well as the team from the R
and D department at Walters Gardens to bring you some fantastic plants.
In the Proven Winners® program we have Astilbe ‘Dark Side of the Moon’;
a plant we have been working on in the research department for a number
of years and have finally built up enough stock to offer. This A. chinensis
hybrid has great vigor, sun tolerance, nearly black foliage and is topped
with pink flowers in summer. It is great for adding long lasting color and
texture to numerous color combinations in the garden and at retail.
The Agastache MEANT TO BE Series launches with a pair of taller plants
for the middle of the border. These have tremendous flower power, look
awesome in containers, are pollinator magnets, and are hardy to Zone 5.
The newly expanding burgundy foliage of ‘Royal Raspberry’ is attractive
long before the floral performance. Do native plants get any better than
this?
Folks have been asking for taller Monarda and we are thrilled to be able to
offer 3 cultivars in the UPSCALE Collection. Stemming from over 10 years
of hybridizing, these selections combine 4 different species and are nearly
3’ tall with the same flower performance, polished habit, and beauty as our
other Monarda series. The powdery mildew resistance is superior as well.
Last but not least in the Proven Winners® Highlights is the selection of our
native Switch Grass Panicum virgatum PRAIRIE WINDS® ‘Niagara Falls’.
A personal favorite among all the selections we have evaluated over the
years, ‘Niagara Falls’ features powdery blue arching foliage reminiscent of
a Pampas grass, and a profusion of airy cream colored panicles in the fall.
The vigor and performance is a nurseryman’s dream.
In our general perennial line-up some notable highlights include Ed
Bowen’s Bergenia ciliata hybrid ‘Ripple Effect’. This plant is to Bergenia
what ‘Empress Wu’ is to Hosta. Gigantic glossy foliage has wavy leaf
margins and forms a large majestic clump. Make room in your shade
garden for this one!
Alstroemeria ‘Golden Tiara’ was a serendipitous find by Tony Avent of
Plant Delights Nursery in a production block of Inca Ice. It has the same
wonderful garden performance, Zone 6 hardiness, and vigor as the original
but with beautiful yellow flowers. The growth rate and finish time in the
nursery is amazing.
Lavandula angustifolia ‘Imperial Gem’ was THE top performer for hardiness
and performance in Richard Hawke’s lavender evaluation in Chicago’s zone
5 climate. We are happy to be able to add this to our growing lavender
portfolio.
Only once in a lifetime does something as amazing as a new Iris come
along. I. ampliflora ‘Ming Treasure’ is a collaborative launch between Dr.
James Waddick, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Shanghai Botanical
Garden, and Walters Gardens. This vigorous iris (believed to be a chance
Hans Hansen, Director of New Plant Development
Hans has been the Director of New Plant Development at our
company for over a decade and the driving force behind our
numerous plant introductions. Under Hans’ guidance, our New Plant
Development department now works with over 80 genera of plants
(more than just perennials!) and is even pioneering new genera like
Mangave. From the truly unique to improvements in durability, Hans
is always working on something new to benefit growers, retailers,
consumers, and satisfy even the most eclectic. To see the latest
plants that have caught Hans’ eye, head to Instagram and follow
@plantsplantsen
hybrid between I. tectorum and another Chinese species discovered in
2013 by Dr. Xiao in Sichuan porvince) has formed a clump 10’ across in
2 years here and is covered in spring with dozens of violet-blue flowers.
Royalties from the sale of the plants go to further Dr. Xiao’s Iris research at
the Shanghai Botanical Garden.
And finally, exciting highlights from the Hybridizing Team here include lovely
double Echinaceas with great garden performance, lateral branching and
stem strength. Eight Hostas from my breeding program combining nearly
30 years of crosses. Most of the Hosta selections include rippled margins
– a hallmark of the breeding program.
And last but not least of my personal favorites – the Mangave. It has been
such a rewarding experience to work with and unlock the potential of
this amazing amazing group of plants. ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Permanent Wave’
combine all the iconic features of Agave with the grower friendly genus of
Manfreda.
Stay tuned as we continue to work and have fun with new plants.
IRAMT30 (Ampliflora Iris) One of the best new hybrid discoveries of the past decade, I. ampliflora is an unknown interspecific hybrid possibly involving I. tectorum
(Japanese Roof Iris) and is sterile. The original hybrid was found naturally occurring in the south central region of China, notable among other species for its impressive
large plant and flower size. ‘Ming Treasure’ is a vigorous selection of I. ampliflora and can perhaps best be described as I. tectorum on steroids. The plant is significantly
larger than most other species of Iris and has a commanding presence in the landscape. Numerous 41/2” flowers are mid-violet with a yellow crest and small white
signal area, appearing on well-branched scapes.
Sarracenia Culture Information
Pitcher plants are a unique garden curio and a staple of bog gardening.
Although daunting by reputation, in the right conditions growing a
gorgeous crop of Sarracenia couldn’t be simpler. Maintain the right mix
of moisture and media to watch your plants thrive!
Lighting
Sarracenia prefer bright, intense sunlight to grow well.
Moisture
Plants should be grown with consistent sub-irrigation.
Temperature
Grow at 65-72° F, hold at 45-50° F
Media
Best grown in 100% peat moss or a 50-50 mix with perlite
Potting / Timing
Finished roots of plugs will not wrap at the base of the plug. Since they
naturally grow in bogs, they form a loose fibrous root system with little
to no root hairs. This can make them difficult to handle, which is why
we grow them in growcoon plugs.
Cutting Back
Saracennia go semi-dormant in winter. Best practice is to remove old
pitchers in early spring to encourage new growth. Be careful not to cut
the phyllodia leaves as they aid in photosynthesis.
Soil pH
5.0-5.5
Pests and Diseases
Sarracenia, especially the newly emerging pitchers, may attract
aphids. Insecticides can be applied to eradicate aphids, but lower rates
are recommended with minimal surfactants/adjuvants. Spraying on a
cloudy day will ensure plants do not burn.
Ornamental Grasses
Grasses Get a Boost
In 2023 our Grass Program is getting a boost with the
addition of seven new varieties, including three new genus.
We have long believed in the quality of the plants coming out
of our grass program and are pleased to be able to offer this
expanded selection to our customers.
Cool Season Grasses
Cool season grasses are at their prime during the cooler
months of fall, winter, and spring, and usually bloom before the
warmer summer weather arrives. This makes them ideal for
the spring retail season as their production cycle favors early
season planting. Cool season grasses should be received in
fall or early spring and potted immediately. They will put on
the most growth during these cooler months, opposite Warm
season grasses. Though they should be kept from freezing
over the winter, they do not require much, if any, supplemental
heat. Growth slows in summer months.
New Cool Season Grasses include:
• Calamagrostis a. HELLO SPRING!
• Carex b. ‘Firefox’
• Nassella tenuissima
Warm Season Grasses
Warm season grasses grow most actively during the
warmer months, then flower in late summer or fall. Most
go completely dormant in winter. Warm season grasses
are not recommended for fall planting. It is best to receive
them from early spring through late summer and pot them
up immediately. If necessary, provide supplemental heat to
keep the plants at 60°F or higher to stimulate top growth.
New Warm Season Grasses include:
• Miscanthus s. BANDWIDTH
• Muhlenbergia r. UNDAUNTED®
• Panicum v. PRAIRIE WINDS® ‘Niagara Falls’
• Panicum v. ‘Red Flame’
Why Mangave?
An intergeneric hybrid, Mangave inherits
the best of its parents. Agave lends
durability and large, architectural form.
Manfreda gives unique coloring and
spotting, faster growth, as well as softer
spines that make them easy to handle.
AGAPO72 (Queen Victoria Agave) Queen Victoria Agave is known for its white lined, beautifully shaped leaves that form a spherical habit. ‘Porcupine’ was selected
from the species for its compact habit. Although relatively hardy for Agave, good winter drainage is required. This species of Agave is slow growing.
MAGIM72 (Mangave) Agave-like deep green leaves have a waxy coating and interesting architectural form. The edges of the leaves fold together where nonlethal
marginal spines give the impression of jaws opening. Cinnamon terminal spines mark the end of the foliage. A large container is recommended for this
®
variety to accommodate its impressive mature size and quick comparative growth rate. Asexual propagation prohibited.
Mangave ‘Permanent Wave’ PPAF — MAD ABOUT MANGAVE® Collection
MAGPW72 (Mangave) This A. ovatifolia hybrid can be likened to a silver version of the popular Agave ‘Frosty Blue’ except with a significantly faster growth
rate. Massive paddle shaped leaves exceed 6” wide at maturity. Cinnamon terminal and marginal spines edge each leaf, contrasting nicely against the
plant’s waxy silver color. A. ovatifolia is one of the most cold hardy Agave species and we expect this plant to follow suit. Asexual propagation prohibited.
