When Duty CallsNelson Troop 4th Contingent photographed on 27 February 1900 by Henry Brusewitz. The six riflemen inmilitary uniform prepare to serve King and Country in the South African (Boer) War (11 October 1899to 31 May 1902). To qualify as a mounted rifleman, each candidate needed to be in good physical health,an accomplished horse rider and, if possible, own his own horse. The photographer, Swedish-born HenryBrusewitz, worked from premises in Waimea Street (now Rutherford Street) Nelson in 1900.Nelson Provincial Museum Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao.
