ACU BRITISH MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP, ALONG WITH MANY NATIONAL AND CLUB LEVEL RACES. THE CIRCUIT OFFERS GREAT
VIEWING FOR SPECTATORS IN FRONT OF THE IMPRESSIVE BACKDROP OF WHITBY BAY. THE SKELDER BANK TRACK IS WIDELY
RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE BEST VENUES IN THE NORTH EAST AND IS ALWAYS POPULAR WITH BOTH THE RIDERS AND RACE
FANS ALIKE.
BACK IN 2014 WHITBY HOSTED A ROUND OF THE OFFICIAL ACU BRITISH MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP WHERE WE SAW TOMMY
SEARLE WHO WAS RIDING FOR TEAM CLS KAWASAKI MONSTER ENERGY AT THE TIME WIN THE MX1, WHILST MATISS KARRO
WHO AT THE TIME WAS RIDING FOR WILVO FORKRENT KTM WON THE MX2. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE TOMMY SEARLE
RETURN TO THE MX1 THIS YEAR RIDING THE CRENDON FASTRACK HONDA TEAM TO SEE IF HE CAN TAKE HOME THE CHEQUERED
FLAG ONCE AGAIN.

Heading into

Round 7 of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels sees us head to Skelder Bank, Whitby. The
circuit offers good viewing for spectators in front of the impressive backdrop of Whitby Bay. The Skelder Bank track is widely
recognised as one of the best in the Northeast and is always popular with both the riders and race fans alike. At this round we will
see the 65cc, 85SW, 85BW, 125cc, 250cc, MX2 and MX1 classes all competing.
The 65cc class provided some fantastic racing at Fatcat and they will be back out to entertain us at Whitby. Wildcard Brian Gyles
showed up at Fatcat with a tone of speed and stunned his competition impressing a lot of people as he dominated and took all 4
race wins. He is looking to make another appearance at Whitby which spells bad news to the rest of the class. Marty Spires is the
young man that currently leads the Championship on 291 points and has been in control this season until the appearance of Gyles.
Spires is 26 points clear of Harley Marczak who has shown his speed this year and is improving each round. Arthur Moore is 3rd in
the Championship on 257 points, 8 back from Marczak. Casey Lister and Leo Wilson sit 4th and 5th in the series.
The 85SW class is currently lead by Robbie Daly on
374 points, Daly has been impressive this year
however Hayden Statt is only 13 points back and will
be looking to mount a challenge at the coming rounds.
Blake Ward-Clarke is 3rd in the series on 343 points
and is only a further 18 points off Statt, so as you can
see it is tight at the top which should make for an
exciting couple of rounds. Sonny Rooney and Joel
Winstanley Dawson sit 4th and 5th in the series, both
within touching distance of the top 3.
The 85BW class has been exciting to watch all season
and the battle at the front really intensified at Fatcat as
Championship leader Billy Askew and Josh Vail went toe
to toe all weekend providing some of the best racing
we’ve seen all year. Billy Askew has a commanding lead
in the series on 579 points however the battle for next
spot in the Championship is tight and through
performances at recent rounds Josh Vail now jumps to
2nd place ahead of Jake Walker in the series by 3 points,
Walker will be looking to reverse this at Whitby. Charlie
Richmond and Freddie Gardiner sit 4th and 5th in the
Championship.

The 125cc class has been one to watch this year with a whole
host of riders capable of winning however one man has been
a step ahead in raw speed, and that man is Charlie Heyman.
Heyman leads the series on 323 points and was flawless at
Fatcat so he is coming into this round in supreme form 81
points clear of his nearest challenger. Cole Mccullough in his
rookie season in the 125cc class finds himself 2nd in the
Championship having been consistent all year. After another
troublesome round at Fatcat, Ollie Colmer drops to 3rd in the
series, he will be looking to find his form again at Whitby. Joe
Brookes is 4th in the series and was showing he was back to
his brilliant best at the last couple of rounds however,
unfortunately he sustained an injury at Fatcat which may
side-line him for a while. Ben Mustoe sits 5th in the series.
The 250cc class has been under the control of Tyler Westcott
this year, Westcott has been dominant and through this has
amounted 332 points and a 53-point advantage over his
nearest rival, Jak Taylor. Taylor has been getting quicker and
quicker all season long and will be looking to steal a win or
two in the remaining rounds. Taylors Team Green Kawasaki
teammate Hudson Roper finds himself 3rd in the series, 56
points behind his teammate. Roper has been consistent all
year however Dominic Newbury and Callum Murfitt are both
snatching at his heels for 3rd in the Championship.
The MX2 class has been filled with drama so far this season and has been a real fan favourite. After taking a flawless 1-1 finish
at Fatcat, Conrad Mewse is your Championship leader on 229 points, he will be looking to stay clean and drama free for the
remaining rounds in his bid to wrap up this title. GRT Impact KTM rider, Jamie Carpenter finds himself 2nd in the series on 187
points, 42 back from Mewse. Carpenter has been fast and consistent all season long and will be trying to repeat this kind of
form at Whitby. Isak Gifting was your Championship leader up until he was stricken with injury, he will be out for the remaining
rounds. Tom Grimshaw has really found his feet in the MX2 class this season and finds himself 4th in the series, 18 points back
from Carpenter. Apico Husqvarna rider, Jamie Law in what is said to be his last year in the sport at this level is 5th in the
Championship on his 250 two stroke machine.
Tommy Searle aboard his Crendon Fastrack Honda is your MX1 Championship leader on 277 points, Searle seems to be
relishing the challenge this year and enjoying his riding, he will be looking for another win this time out at Whitby to further
solidify his points advantage. Cabscreens Crescent Yamaha man Harri Kullas is 2nd in the standings, 13 points back from
Searle, he will really be looking to put in a charge to try and snatch the title in the remaining rounds. Shaun Simpson has had
an up and down year and finds himself 3rd in the Championship however he has shown a lot of speed in the last couple
rounds, and he will be wanting to finish the year out strong. Josh Gilbert is 4th in the series 20 points back from Simpson after
a difficult couple of rounds. ASA United GasGas rider Jon Adamson has been flying of late and has really raised some eyebrows
in the paddock, he has been improving each round and was a force to be reckoned with at Fatcat, he will be one to watch at
Whitby.

HOW HAS THE BRITISH SEASON BEEN SO FAR FOR YOU?
BRITISH HAS BEEN GOOD. WE ARE 2ND AT THE MOMENT AND FIGHTING FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP STILL. I
ENJOY THIS PROCESS. FOR SURE THERE’S BEEN RACES WHICH I HAVEN’T BEEN 100% HAPPY BUT IT ISN’T
ALWAYS GOING THE WAY YOU WANT.
WHAT HAS THE GENERAL SEASON BEEN LIKE FOR YOU?
GENERAL IT’S GOOD YEAR AGAIN. WE HAVE TO ALWAYS LOOK POSITIVE SIDE. 2ND IN BRITISH, LEADING MX
NATIONALS AND I GOT A DEAL WITH GP TEAM SO WE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE RIDING AT GP LEVEL? AND DO YOU THINK
THAT IT WILL HELP YOU PUSH FOR THE BRITISH TITLE?
GP WEEKEND WAS BIT DIFFICULT. FOR ME TO GO FIRST RACE TO
LOKET IS ALWAYS CHALLENGE. I NEVER FELT 100% THERE SO
MAYBE THE RESULTS WASN’T WHAT I’M ACTUALLY CAPABLE.
WE WORK AND HOPEFULLY WE HAVE BETTER WEEKEND AT
LOMMEL.
I REALLY WANT TO HOPE THAT GP RACES GIVE SOME EXTRA
PUSH FOR BRITISH ROUNDS BUT OBVIOUSLY LOCAL BOYS ARE
ALWAYS FAST AT HOME
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS HEADING INTO WHITBY?
NEVER BEEN TO WHITBY. I HEARD SOME EX RIDERS ARE PREPPING
THE TRACK SO I REALLY HOPE THAT’S TRUE. THEN IT SHOULD MAKE
NICE DIRT AND SOME LINES AND EXCITING RACING!
PREPARATIONS ARE SAME AS ANY OTHER RACE. BUT OBVIOUSLY
NOW TRAINING MORE WITH GP GUYS IN THE WEEK AND WEEKENDS
SO THE INTENSITY IS BIT HIGHER
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE 2023 SEASON?
FOR 2023 NO PLANS YET. BIT TOO EARLY FOR THAT. TRYING TO
FINISH THIS YEAR STRONG.
WHAT IS IT LIKE RIDING AT THE BRITISH COMPARED
TO THE GP'S?
BRITISH IS GETTING BETTER NOW, BUT STILL LOT TO
WORK ON THE TRACK MAINTENANCE AND WATERING
MAINLY. OBVIOUSLY SAME TRACKS YEAR AFTER
YEAR ISN’T IDEAL ALSO. BUT IT IS NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP SO WE TAKE AS IT IS AND TRY OUR
BEST ALWAYS.

TRISTAN
PURDON
Tristan is a South African Red Bull KTM Motocross
Racer with some highly ranking achievements under
his belt including the MX1 & MX2 South African
Championship titles. He competed at Blaxhall picking
up 18 points in the MX1 class and will be joining us
again at FatCat.
We spoke to Tristan about his performance at Blaxhall and his thoughts for FatCat and
this is what he had to say.
"I was really excited heading into Blaxhall. After a good race with Shaun the previous
weekend, I was keen to get on the line again. The intensity of the racing and track are so
different to South Africa. Rougher, faster and more competitive. I was hoping to do better
than what I did. The first moto I was in the top 10 and wasn’t too happy so pushed harder
and was feeling more comfortable going into the second moto, was stoked to be running
top 5, because that’s where I was hoping to be but a mistake cost me. We live and we
learn though.
It was insane to see so many spectators at the racing, back home it’s a lot smaller. A lot
of friendly faces too that are all just in it for the love of motocross which is really cool.
So stoked to have the opportunity to come back and race a bit more. The more time to
get to grips with the tracks and racing here, the more I can improve. I’ve been told Fat
Cats is a sandy one and I enjoy the sand back home, so I’m excited to take what I’ve
learnt and hopefully pull some better results out the bag.
