BIG
THMAR G. G
Dear Friends,
My father, Othmar G. Grueninger, the founder of this company and a true travel visionary, passed
away July 16, 2021, at the age of 92. For more than 60 years, he showed Hoosiers the world. A bigger
bigger
than
life
than life figure who seldom showed stress. His signature catchphrase, “No Problem,” continues to
be the foundation of the Grueninger Travel Group. His philosophy of giving our guests a stress-free,
carefree journey with around-the-clock support and attention to every detail is the backbone of our
business.
He lived by the words Dream Big. No goal was too lofty,
no plan too grand. He often told us “there was always a
way.” Boy did he make things happen, from buying his
own cruise ship, trains, and small airplanes to helicopter
skiing in British Columbia or ziplining in Costa Rica at
age 80.
More importantly, however, are the lives he impacted.
As his son, people from around the world, in all walks
of life, tell me how my father touched their lives. One
guest shared “He took me on a bike trip through Europe
that is still my favorite trip.” And another “I started
playing chess with your dad on a trip to Greece, and
from then on, he always made time to play with me, no
matter how far we’d traveled that day.” One more guest
shared, “Hoosiers from all over the state benefitted
by your creative father’s design. People who had only
traveled to destinations close to home found themselves
in places they never had dreamed of going thanks to
your father.” Or the guest who wanted me to know that
atrue
travel
visionary
RUENINGER
“The Alpine Haus was the ‘go to’ store for ski jackets, even for those of As a father, his calm, no problem demeanor instilled confidence in his
us who didn’t ski.”
children. He was always there, even when he wasn’t. For example, the
morning after my older sister’s wedding, she and her husband were
waiting in the Hyatt lobby at 5:00 am for a taxi to the airport. No one
was around, but the phone at the bell desk rang and rang, echoing in
the empty lobby. My brother-in-law finally picked it up and it was my
dad with some last minute, final instructions for their honeymoon.
There are all the past employees who he mentored, advised, and
helped along the way. It wasn’t unusual to hear: “He encouraged
me to go to college and helped with my recommendation letters.”
Perhaps many just remember him because he had such a full collection
of stories to share. He would travel around the state, giving his “You
Crazy, Wonderful Americans” speech in church basements to Rotary
Clubs and Garden Clubs, always wanting us all to realize how fortunate
we were to live in this county.
There were few places he hadn’t been. By our count, he traveled to 105
countries, but that number is probably too low. Aided with an infallible
sense of direction, adventurous spirit, and boundless curiosity, he
always knew where to go and how to get there. Local retailers, from
rug dealers in Tunisia to cuckoo clock makers in the Black Forest, knew
him. People in big cities to small towns remembered him. Once, in the
middle of rural Switzerland, our motorcoach stopped at a small hotel
and café for a break. An older woman rushed out with his cane as he
had left it at the cafe two years prior.
A big, fill-the-doorway man you could see in a crowd, walking ahead,
showing the way. A gentle man. A generous man. A real problem
solver. He just figured it out, whatever “it” was. Always, always, with
some idea percolating in background.
He came to the United States from the Black Forest, Germany for
graduate studies in international relations at DePauw. He spoke
German, French and Latin, but no English. No problem, he worked in
a movie theater and drove a linen truck to learn the language. He also
sat in on a United States History class even though he wasn’t registered
to take the class. After a few weeks the professor finally approached
him and, after learning my father’s story, let him stay in it for the rest
of the semester.
Broke and homesick, his solution was to coordinate a grand summer
tour of Europe for fellow students and a few professors. My mother,
Libby, was on that first tour as one of his first clients and the rest is
history. They married and expanded from student travel to a fullservice
business in June of 1956.
That was just the beginning. Using his native knowledge of Europe, he
arranged European tours for corporate travel clubs, ski clubs, religious
pilgrimages, and other groups, including Delco-Remy (division of
General Motors), DePauw Alumni, Indiana University Alumni, Indiana
State Teachers Assn, fans of the Indianapolis Indians, Indianapolis Art Museum. the Indianapolis Bar
Association, The Murat Shrine, Coca Cola, the Booth Tarkington Civic Theater, and North Methodist
Church. He was one of the first in the Midwest to provide tours to Israel, Russia, and Cuba and his
company was the largest agency in the Midwest for TWA, PAA, and EL AL airlines. Under Othmar
and Libby’s partnership, the company grew to 12 branch offices in Indiana, three in Massachusetts
and even one in Paris, France. He expanded from its initial offering of 6-10 week European tours
to include student travel, Olympic tours, three private pullman cars for weekly tours, involvement
in the Voyager 1000 travel club, privately owned motorcoach tours, student performance tours
to parades and other domestic and international festivals, off-season charters to southern Spain,
chartered cruises on the Great Lakes, as well as premium immersive experiences, including the Holy
Land and Mediterranean, the Black Forest & Switzerland, India, South Africa, Australia and China.
We purchased the Ambassadair Travel Club in 2005, continuing our commitment to group and
escorted travel.
My father chartered a 165-passenger luxury Greek cruise liner
throughout the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Holy Land. An official
Indiana State flag flew from the masthead of the ship. He also created
Indy 500 packages, bringing race fans from Hawaii, Guam, Australia,
South America, Europe and throughout the United States to Speedway.
His three private pullman cars, re-christened with names of former
Hoosier governors, were operated for 17 consecutive weeks each
summer as Expo Express, taking hundreds of Hoosiers to Montreal and
The Expo ‘67, expanding to Canadian Rockies in the following years. In
1968 his trains took a group of Indiana University alums to their only
Rose Bowl game in Pasadena. He also bought his own German double
decker motorcoaches, naming the first one, “The Bus.”
As his son,
people from
around the
world, in all
walks of life,
tell me how my
father touched
their lives.
Student travel was always close to his heart. He owned five VW “microbuses” for small student
groups to travel easily around Europe. He focused on student performance travel with both high
school bands and choirs but he was most fond of his relationship with the Indianapolis Children’s
Choir. I remember sleeping on the ground outside one night with a group from the Indianapolis
Archdiocese we took to the World Youth Day in Cologne Germany. He never wanted to miss an
experience.
While managing the Indianapolis Ski Club tours, my dad realized there was no place in Indiana
to buy ski equipment. He opened the Sport Haus in Broad Ripple, also selling scuba and tennis
equipment before it morphed in to the Alpine Haus, which also offered European import clothing
and gifts at the Glendale Mall. Never one to sit still, my dad became president of Carras Cruises in
1977 and successfully filled the two luxury ships by offering cruises as incentives for corporate groups,
innovative at that time. His knack for innovation continued as he started offering off season, charter
travel with his “Spain Plane” to Costa Del Sol. He offered trips to the Tokyo and Mexico Olympics
with NCAA track and field coaches. In 1997, he was honored as the Grand Marshal of the King
Kamehameha Parade and Festival for his impact in promoting Hawaii.
My father was always big on bringing technology into the business. He was one of the first in the
Midwest to install and use the airline reservation system Sabre, as well as other systems such as
Telemax and Reservatron. In early days, he bought a telex for world-wide communications, as well
as magnetic tape Selectric® typewriter to create faster itinerary service. He purchased an offset
press to print the company’s brochures, books, and special itineraries. In the early 1980s, he saw how
computers weren’t just for hobbyists and bought several Commodore and Osbornes. Growing up, our
house was filled with gadgets of all kinds. He loved walkie talkies, fax machines, printers, televisions
in all sizes, cell phones including the big bag mobile phones that were the size of a briefcase and lots
and lots of cameras.
Dad was a founding member and president of the American Retail Travel Association
(ARTA), as well as a state secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and the Northside
Kiwanis. He served on the board of the Jaycees, was State Secretary for a two-year
term and a long time Exhausted Rooster. He was also on the board of the Propylaeum,
and involved with the National Tour Association.
He was particularly proud of becoming a U.S. citizen in December of 1960. In 2015,
he was honored as the Hoosier German-American of the Year, a special award for
promoting cultural understanding between Germany and the United States and the
two sister cities of Indianapolis and Cologne.
He was a wonderful father and grandfather, always “there” no matter where he
was in the world. He instilled in his family, his friends and his customers a love for
exploring the world and finding adventure, from the famous historic sites of the world
to treasures often discovered off the beaten paths.
I know I have said this before, but I was so fortunate to get to work with my parents
for 27 years. That was a true blessing. Not a day goes by that I don’t wish I could talk
to my Dad, maybe to share a story about one of my children or to get his opinion on
the latest development or trend in the industry. He would always have a great idea
or just a simple piece of advice for me. Actually, knowing my Dad, he would probably
have both.
Bon voyage, Othmar. Here’s to smooth sailing and clear skies!
WHY
AMBASSADAIR?
Experience counts. In 67 years of traveling all around the world,
we’ve seen a lot of places and made a lot of friends. Doors do
open for us, for we have the key: Experience.
First-hand knowledge. It makes a difference. Our expert staff
custom design trips based on hands-on, been-there-ourselves
experience with just the right mix of activities and sights with
free time to explore or relax on your own. We know where to go
and where not to go, what to do and what not to do. We discover,
design, and develop the best trips with you in mind. Why piece
together your trip from online computer algorithms? We’ve
built our trips and reputation based on thousands of trips with
Hoosiers to hundreds of places through the decades.
The only way to create and develop a great trip—be it an
experience-of-a-lifetime or that smooth, stress-free quick
getaway—is by having been there ourselves. Few travel
professionals have the first-hand knowledge or industry
expertise our staff does. For more than six decades, we have
traveled the world discovering new sites, new hotels, new
restaurants and one-of-a-kind locations. There’s no substitute for
our personal experience or for our long-time partnerships with
travel vendors around the globe.
We are one of the most experienced
travel providers in the state.
Friends & Family. We’re a family and a company of passionate
travelers. As a locally, family owned and operated travel
company, our values and our vision remain constant: doing
whatever it takes to provide fellow Hoosiers with unforgettable
memories. We pride ourselves on delivering more than what’s
expected. We put our travel guests first. For us, it isn’t about
making a living, it’s what we’ve been taught to do, it’s what we
learned more than 65 years ago and never abandoned.
Partner Relationships: Ambassadair works closely with
industry leaders to provide our customers with the best pricing,
accomodations, and dining options. Holland America Line
awarded us Premium Preferred Partner. We’re members of the
National Tour Association (NTA), American Society of Travel
Agents (ASTA), Ensemble, Cruise Line International Association
(CLIA), and Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA), and
American Bus Association (ABA).
We are still one family, multigenerational with
a focus on improving your travel experience.
That’s what it’s all about.
Why choose
anyone
else?
Some places just have to be seen to be believed.
The
World is
Waiting
For You
We work hard to create that beyond-the-ordinary travel experience. From learning
how to roll pretzels or how to build a cuckoo clock to placing flowers to help finish
a Tournament of Roses Parade float, Ambassadair trips include special touches that
help define a destination, extras you can’t get anywhere else, insights from the people
who live there.
We take you front and center, up close and personal, with help from local experts. It’s
sight-do, not sight-see. We give you preferred access, from seating and behind-thescenes
tours to meeting an Iditarod musher or sharing a tea ceremony in a private
home. Best of all, we take care of all the worries.
We understand great trips include great food, engaging
entertainment, attentive service, comfortable accommodations,
and bang-for-your-buck value.
Many of our trips include local guides in addition to our Travel
Directors. These local guides bring insider knowledge and share
their home with you.
Let go!
No Hidden Fees. The cost of your trip includes transportation,
accommodations, travel director, most gratuities, activities and
sightseeing, baggage handling, breakfasts and other meals
as indicated in the itinerary. Since we create trips with time for
optional activities and meals for you to indulge in on your own, our
itineraries detail what is and what isn’t included. It’s peace of mind
for you.
you manage changing health restrictions and regulations. Should
you suffer health issues on your trip, your Ambassadair Travel
Director will be there to help.
Customer Support. We’re always here for you. We aren’t a faceless
name, robotic chat, or overseas call center. We are right down the
street and on-call 24/7 during a trip. This isn’t just a job for us, it’s
what we love to do.
Discerning Accommodations. We carefully select fine
accommodations with a balance of comfort, location, ambience,
cost, and service.
Seamless Transportation. Motorcoach, transfers, flights
a group of classmates. Nancy traveled extensively with the Purdue University
Continuing Education program to the far corners of the earth including
Kenya, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Sweden, China, Australia, Spain and more!
education. She enjoys sharing her travel experiences with her guests and looks
forward to the many opportunities ahead as an Ambassadair Travel Director.
Joe has served hundreds of our guests on
international and national excursions,
including Mexico, Canada and Ireland, as
a registered civil mediator, and is making progress in learning to play his banjo.
use his free time as an Ambassadair Travel Director. His favorite destinations are
meeting new friends and works hard to enhance their vacation experience.
Chucks favorite pastimes are bird watching, scuba diving, aquatic gardening
and spending time with his three beautiful daughters. Chuck is an avid Colts
as an Ambassadair Travel Director.
her former work, personal travel and
humanitarian work. She has led international trips while working as the International
& Cultural Affairs Director for former Indianapolis Mayor Ballard as well as the
trip is one where you can experience the beauty and intensity of the local culture of
the destination whether it is the landscape, the people, food, music, or customs.
“I love to see new things, meet new people and I love to
learn. Traveling is a true trifecta!! It’s simply the best!”

TRAVEL PROTECTION/CANCELLATION WAIVER Grueninger strongly
recommends that travelers purchase a travel protection plan. Travel
protection safeguards your travel investment, your belongings, and
most importantly, you. Your travel protection plan should cover at
a minimum, cancellation, curtailment, medical, emergency travel
and personal accidents, and damage or loss to personal belongings.
Travel protection with Cancel for Any Reason coverage is available and
Grueninger recommends you research this coverage prior to purchasing
travel protection.
Grueninger is not qualified to answer technical questions about the
benefits, exclusions, and conditions of travel protection plans. Grueninger
cannot evaluate the adequacy of the prospective insured’s existing
insurance coverage. If you have any questions about your travel protection,
call the travel protection company directly.
Declining travel protection plan coverage could result in the loss of your
travel cost and/or require more money to correct the situation. You also
acknowledge that without this coverage, there may be no way to recoup
any losses, costs or expenses incurred. If a traveler chooses to travel
without adequate travel protection, Grueninger will not be liable for any
of your losses howsoever arising, which would have been covered by
adequate travel protection.
For trips that travel protection is not offered including charter flights and
motorcoach day trips, Cancellation Waiver may be offered. This covers
any cancellation fees incurred by changes or cancellation up to 48 hours
prior to departure of air and/or ground components. It does not cover the
Cancellation Waiver premium, non-refundable optional tours, one-way
travel, or voluntary changes made to your plans that result in a price
increase. The Cancellation Waiver may only be purchased at the time of
reservation and deposit and is valid for new bookings only on selected
trips per the trip page on ambassadair.com. If the Cancellation Waiver is
desired, it must be purchased by each paying passenger on the reservation
and each person sharing accommodations.
CHANGES Any changes you make regarding your reservation are subject
to a per person change fee plus any applicable cancellation charges or
increases in the package price.
CANADA
POLAR BEARS OF CHURCHILL, CANADA
Coming Soon • October 2023
Richard Day/Daybreak Imagery Frontiers North Adventures
Take an incredible journey to witness the polar bears
of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada firsthand. By October,
the polar bears are hungry. They emerge from summer’s
“walking hibernation” and gather on the shores of Hudson
Bay along the southern edge of Canada’s Arctic. Here, the
ice forms first. That means hunting season. While the bears
wait near the remote town of Churchill (so remote it can’t
be reached by road), there’s not much for them to do but
roam the tundra, spar, and occasionally cause mischief
that lands them in polar bear jail. The idle weeks create
perfect conditions for adventure-seekers to view the bears
– sometimes a bear walks right up to the specially designed
tundra buggies. Spend two days exploring the Churchill
Wildlife Management Area with a knowledgeable guide
observing and learning about these enthralling creatures in
their natural habitat. You may also see other wildlife such as
arctic fox, ptarmigan, and snowy owls, and maybe even the
aurora borealis.
Highlights Include:
• Up-close encounters with polar bears in their natural
environment
• 2 full days of tundra tours during peak bear viewing
season
• Opportunity to see the aurora borealis
• Winnipeg sightseeing tour
