Book club
Murder, mysteries and mayhem ... and a classic bottle of red!
A small town. A shocking crime. Our kind of novel. In Robert Gold’s Twelve
Secrets, two boys murdered their classmate, Nick, an event that changed
Ben’s life in an instant. It was a crime that shocked the nation, and threw Ben
and his family into the spotlight. Fast forward 20 years, and Ben is a successful
investigative journalist, living in his home town and part of its close-knit
community. But a fresh murder case brings Nick’s murder back into the spotlight,
and throws suspicion on those closest to him. And it appears that many, in this
small town, have something to hide. Sphere, available at Exclusive Books
It’s the club you’d kill to join, and billed
to be the celebrity event of the decade.
The opening of Island Home, a forgotten
island transformed into the height of
luxury. But, as is reported in the Vanity
Fair exclusive, no one expected how
tragically things were to go wrong. From
the tense opening chapter, The Club
by Ellery Lloyd (pseudonym for Londonbased
husband and wife team Collette
Lyons and Paul Vlitos) is taunt, exhilarating,
and completely unputdownable. Mantle,
We think this new Roodeberg
legends. Evolving from the master’s original
blend first created in 1949, a special panel of
winemakers has steered the secret blend since
the 1960s. This beautifully nuanced Roodeberg
Classic Red Blend has aromatic layers of fresh
red and dark fruit, cassis and hints of spice and
dark chocolate. Just the thing to enjoy alongside
a great book. The gift pack costs R109.99 and
Desirables to get us through the last of winter
Pack up a picnic
Winter’s not only about sitting around the fire on
the sofa, with chocolate cake and a hot toddy (not,
we rush to point out, that there’s anything wrong
with that at all!). But when the sun shines, and
it’s warm outdoors, pack up a picnic blanket and
a flask of coffee and enjoy an al fresco lunch. In
Foolproof Picnic, Marina Filippelli offers five dozen
delicious recipes, many of which are perfect for a
winter picnic. Let’s be honest, not much beats a
perfect ploughman’s with a classic scotch egg on
the side (she’s included those suggestions), but
there are also options, like Leek and stilton quiche
with walnut pastry, a blueberry and raspberry loaf
cake, lovely cheesy courgette scones, and a giant
couscous salad with saffron-toasted tomatoes and
beetroot. All very easy, completely delish and loads
of tips - what to pack, games to play, and so on.
Embrace the versatility of Port-style wines ... and win!
We tend to think Port, and Port-style wines, as a drink for mature drinkers to
enjoy with a cheese board or dessert. But it really is one of the most versatile
drinks ... working well with cocktails and with main dish pairings - think soups,
curries, and read meat dishes like steak. Try these this winter ...
The De Krans Premium Cape Ruby ... Go ahead and add it generously to your
potjie or any meat dish in a slow cooker – guaranteed to take your meat dish
to that next level. The Cape Ruby also pairs well with traditional Cape bobotie,
waterblommetjie – bredie, rustic pastas and hearty soups. R99.
The De Krans Cape Vintage pairs beautifully with a baked dessert like
chocolate fondant or a piece of dark chocolate, and is sublime with well
matured cheese. You can also serve this excellent value-for-money port-style
wine with Karoo lamb potjie, venison pie or roasted vegetable lasagna. R129.
Of all the different options, the De Krans Cape Tawny Limited Release, which
spends an average of eight years ageing in an oak barrel, is probably the most
unique and different. It’s an excellent alternative to sherry and best enjoyed
slightly chilled. It not only pairs well with baked winter puddings like malva
pudding and Crème Brûlée, as well as baked cheese with drizzled honey, nuts
and rosemary, but will also elevate dishes like brown onion soup, loin of pork
stuffed with dried fruit, or prawns prepared in a light Malaysian style. R240.
The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve, the flagship at De Krans, is truly
something special. And to truly experience and appreciate the quality of
this exceptional wine, it is best enjoyed on its own. Alternatively, it pairs well
with matured cheese. And if you’re looking for an excellent gift ... it makes
a jolly thoughtful one as it can be stored and matured for up to 40 years (in
favourable cool conditions, with the bottles lying down). R375.
You can order all online on dekrans.co.za. And you can win a pack of Port-style
wines, too. We’re giving one reader a three-bottle carry pack. Head over to our
IG page @getitnationalmagazines before August 25. Cheers!
up in a show-me-off bottle. You’ll find
Power woman
How does the theme for this year’s Spar Ladies 10km race, #IRise,
The theme for this year’s
resonate with you?
The theme resonates deeply with me and I am humbled to have been
Spar ladies 10km run is
chosen as an ambassador. Growing up in a not-so-great environment in
#IRise - and it could not be
Inanda, I faced many challenges as a young girl. My friends were getting
pregnant and taking drugs, and I could’ve ended up doing the same. I
better suited to ambassador have also faced a lot of criticism and harsh words from the guys because
I’ve chosen to play a male-dominant sport and work in a male-dominant
Zinhle Ndawonde, who is profession. I was raised by a single mother who was a domestic worker
and circumstances at home were not good, but instead of allowing that to
a firefighter based at King define who I was or who I became, I chose instead to use those challenges
to strengthen me. I also chose to rise above the stereotyping that people
Shaka International Airport
apply to women playing rugby or being in male-dominant professions. I am
unapologetic about the woman I am.
and a professional Sharks and
Springbok rugby player.
Strong and determined, Zinhle is the
kind of woman that all young girls should
be looking up to. Despite having had a
challenging childhood and facing much
criticism for her decisions to play rugby
and work in a male-dominant profession,
she has chosen to rise above it all and
follow her dreams. We caught up with this
incredibly inspiring power woman …
Tell us about a typical day in your life,
and how you balance your sport and
work commitments.
My days are usually quite simple, but busy.
I usually start off with a jog and bit of
conditioning before I get going with my
allocated work duties for the day. During
the day I usually have firefighter training
that I have to do, and then in the evenings
I go to gym for some strength training.
My days usually go by pretty fast. In terms
of balance, I am really lucky that my job
and sport actually complement each
other. They both have a similar sentiment
– being fit mentally and physically – and,
because we have a gym at work and I
have space to do what I need to, I can
usually ‘kill two birds with one stone’,
staying conditioned for rugby and
firefighting at the same time.
Do you enjoy running and where do you usually run?
I’ll be honest with you and say most professional athletes don’t enjoy running
– especially when it’s for conditioning on the field! I do love running on the
beach though. That is where I go to get in my ‘zone’ and spend time with
myself and my inner space. It allows me the space and time I need to think,
dream and plan.
What would your advice be to young girls in a similar situation you have
been in?
I always tell girls, especially those from rural areas who I work with a lot these
days, is this: we all have problems and challenges. It’s how you use those
challenges that count. Don’t allow your circumstances to make you feel like
you’re not good enough to pursue your dreams or blur your vision. Instead,
use them to change how your future plays out. Don’t let people discourage
you or say you can’t be anything you want to be. You can. It just takes
dedication, focus and fight. You have to fight for what you want and make
yourself heard.
What has been the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Nothing ever comes easy in life. Some things feel like they are taking forever
to work in your favour, but use the time while you wait for those things by
making sure you’re working hard, getting prepared and are ready. When I
decided I wanted to be a professional player I had to make big changes in my
life. It’s about discipline and working hard to achieve your goals.
Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years’ time?
I hope to have a foundation for young girls where they can learn the basics of
rugby from a young age (just like boys do). Many female rugby players don’t
know the basics. Some of them only begin playing in their 20s. Imagine if
they started learning from the age of 7 or 10? I would love to mentor young
girls and help create opportunities for them to play overseas so they can
bring home international experience and knowledge to share here with us.
What you need to know about this year’s Spar virtual challenge
The virtual run (or jog or walk) can be at your own pace at any location. You can run in groups or with a friend, but you
must do it any time between 6am and 6pm on Saturday, 3 September. The virtual race is limited to 60 000 entries, so enter
now if you haven’t already! Entry is R120 and includes a virtual pack with a T-shirt, buff, drawstring bag, printed copy of the
Kwazilience
The word resilience means ‘the capacity to recover
quickly from difficulties’. It’s a word we’ve heard many
times over the past couple of years, and it forms the
basis of a wonderful new word recently coined by North
Coast mom and grandmother, Lesley van Straaten.
Text: Leah Shone
14 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga August 2022
Like most of us, Simbithi-based Lesley had reached
what felt like the end of her tether when the
second round of flooding hit KZN. The Covid
pandemic, lockdown, riots, looting, floods (and then
more floods), coupled with personal losses and
tragedies over the past two years, began to weigh
very heavily on her.
However, just like the rest of us, Lesley picked
herself up and carried on ‘soldiering forward’.
She dealt with the blows and ‘kept it together’ . . .
because that’s what we do. In May, just a week after
her father tragically passed away, Lesley (who is a
retired primary school teacher), sat down and drew
out a timeline of everything that had happened
over the past two years.“ I wasn’t just thinking
about us as a family, but us as a community. Our
domestic worker, who lives in Tongaat, hasn’t had
water for months and there is no end in sight.” Then,
because it’s something she enjoys doing, Lesley
began playing around with words. When the word
‘kwazilience’ popped into her mind, she thought,
‘yes, that’s exactly it’. The word and its description
have since gone viral on the Internet.
A KZN girl through-and-through, Lesley grew up
and spent much of her life in Umhlanga. She has
three children, all of whom are born-and-bred
KZNers. She qualified as a teacher and spent 17
years teaching junior primary in La Lucia before
taking early retirement when the pandemic hit.
“All the teachers who continued to teach
throughout the pandemic are truly some of
the most resilient people in the world,” she says,
knowingly.
Lesley and her financial advisor husband, Andre,
recently relocated to Ballito to be close to their
two grandchildren. She remembers the day she
thought up the word ‘kwazilience’. “I was feeling
incredibly emotional that day. I had recently lost my
dad and was thinking, ‘how much more can we all
go through’? I had seen something on Facebook
where the person said, ‘If I had to go to war, I would
want to go with an army of KZNers.’ I loved that.”
When Lesley came up with ‘kwazilience’, a friend
asked if she could tweak the description a little and
use it on her social media platform. She agreed and
it went viral. What she put up was the following:
‘Kwazilience: applies to those who dwell in KZN,
South Africa. Almost a numbing; a coping skill
we have developed to Covid, lockdowns, rioting,
looting and flooding of excessive proportions.’
Before long friends and family who lived around the
world were messaging Lesley to tell her that she
had gone viral. “I didn’t even know what that meant,”
she laughs. The word and its meaning resonated
(and still does) with so many people. “The thing
is, unless you’ve actually lived what we’ve lived
through here in KZN, you don’t really understand
it. I think everyone needs to feel understood,
supported and connected at this point.”
Since then, Lesley says she’s been approached by
a large food company, asking if they could use
the term in their corporate teambuilding and she
featured on the Harvest Church podcast, where the
pastor referred to her as a ‘wordsmith’. “I found that
so funny,” she says, “and had a good laugh when
I heard it. I just think it’s great that this has left a
warm, fuzzy feeling with people.”
WHEN WOMEN GATHER ...
70 YEARS ON
It is a tale of caring and vision. Of selflessness and commitment. A story that began 70 years ago
when a few North Coast farmers’ wives decided it was time to lend a helping hand to the struggling
communities around them. It is a story that brings testimony to the strength behind the Christmas
Fair Fund’s theme this year - ‘when women gather, great things happen’.
In 1952, prompted by Shirley Jex and Ruby Stewart, a group of ladies set out
to raise funds for a car for the local clinic sister. A fair was organised around
Christmas time in the (then) Stanger town hall, selling homegrown produce
and beautifully crafted handwork. The cost of the car was 100 Pounds, but
the Fair raised 500 Pounds.
Buoyed by their success, the ladies started supporting other deserving
causes and the Christmas Fair became an annual institution. The non-profit
organisation, the Christmas Fair Fund, was born.
All members of the Christmas Fair Fund are volunteers who give freely of
their time, talents and expertise. It is a testimony to the dedication of these
special women that the organisation has survived for 70 years. The founder,
Shirley Jex, followed by a succession of talented and dynamic chairladies,
have steered the fund from humble beginnings to the influential, caring and
respected organisation it has become.
Shirley also started the famous Umvoti Mouth bridge day at her home at Jex
Estate, to raise extra funds for the growing needs of the Lower Tugela district
communities. The Christmas Fair Fund bridge day has been a fixture on social
calendars for many years. In later years the very stylish event, supported by
bridge players from far and wide, was also hosted by Hotel Izulu and Braeside.
When Deids Rush took over from Shirley as chairlady, an era of very
glamorous fundraising events followed. Fabulous fashion shows in
collaboration with Durban Designers and Durban Fashion Week, glorious
‘flowers through the home’, musical soirees, the annual Hirsch’s Golf Day and
informative talks graced the social calendar of the North Coast. These mustattend
events were always generously sponsored by the hosting venues:
Collisheen Estate & Wedding Venue, Zimbali, Hotel Izulu, Simbithi Country
Club, Sibaya, Mt Edgecombe Country Club, Umhlali Country Club and the
beautiful homes of the Hulett, Stewart, Rey and Milstead families.
Deids Rush was followed by Monica Mansfield, Sandy Keil and Shirley Yates,
June Garner, Michelle Blake and present chairlady, Gaby Lyle. Finances have
been ably managed by Ruby Stewart, Liz Osborn, and Olga Serton. Vice chair
and secretarial positions were managed by Sue Rowland, Michelle Loynes
and Gill Campbell. Over the years a membership of 48 volunteers have given
of their time and talents in supporting 24 sustainable projects, initiatives and
individuals.
All funds raised by the Christmas Country Fair and other fundraising
events were and continue to be distributed to sustainable, well-run local
organisations, institutions and individuals in the Lower Tugela District. The
focus has remained on education and health and, over the years, many
individuals, schools, clinics, feeding schemes and homes and shelters for the
vulnerable have been beneficiaries.
Long-standing projects supported by The Christmas Fair Fund include: Lower
Tugela Bursary Fund, St Lukes Home of Healing, Westbrook Retirement
Village, Hearts that Hope, Summerhill House, Nkgobongo Resource Centre,
North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, to name a few.
The success story of this well-run NPO is due to the incredible committee
of WOMEN, our community that have supported and sponsored, our media
partners Get It Magazine Ballito.Umhlanga, Life & Style 88fm and Magazine,
The North Coast Courier and the grace of God.
The Country Fair
Seventy years later, the Christmas Country
Fair is now one of the biggest of its kind
in KZN, welcoming 5 200 visitors last year.
Supported by vendors and shoppers from
across the country, the Christmas Country
Fair has grown into a beautiful showcase of
South African creatives, designers, makers,
bakers, crafters, producers and foodies. We
provide a platform to showcase, do good
business and support the community.
We launched our first Easter Country Fair this
year during challenging times, contending
with postponement due to floods, and
relaunched it as ‘After the Storm’. We are
excited for what next year holds for an Easter
event!
The success of our fundraising initiatives is
due to the passion and commitment of our
talented members, all of whom are women
who have a heartbeat for the upliftment of
our community.
We have grown a brand in showcasing the
talents of our Christmas Fair Fund creative
team, who deliver exquisite on-trend
season-themed products and fresh products.
This year’s Christmas Country Fair is
scheduled for 24 to 26 November at
Collisheen Estate & Wedding Venue. It’s
going to be big … we have 70 years to
celebrate! Tickets will be on sale online,
and because parking is limited, visitors are
encouraged to buy tickets online. Vendor
applications go live on our website on 29
July 2022 and the priority is to showcase
South African produced products.
We welcome new members!
Sharing love & giving hope
When women come together as a group, incredible things happen. Founded and run
entirely by women, the House of Love and Hope (HOLAH) baby house is a refuge for
babies and children who have no one else to care for them. We met two of their North
Coast board members and found out more about this remarkable organisation.
Co-founder Kim with one of the lovely carers who look after the kids at HOLAH
It’s hard to imagine how we, as individuals, can really make a difference
when we are surrounded by so much need every day. But we can. Just
ask these two Mount Edgecombe-based moms and businesswomen,
who also happen to be passionate, hands-on board members of this
wonderful non-profit organisation.
Both Colleen Wilson and Dominique Deana were immediately drawn
in by the love, compassion and care they saw when they first visited
HOLAH and met its founders, Kim Brown and Leanne Lorrance. “You can’t
help but be blown away by how much their name is ‘lived out’ every
day,” says Dominique, who joined the organisation last year.
About Likhon Ithemba and HOLAH
Founders Kim and Leanne started the charity organisation, Likhon
Ithemba, after being driven by a need to ensure that children are given a
chance to live a better life and be adopted - no matter their background.
The HOLAH baby house is one of four projects they run under the
charity.
Kim (who was adopted herself ) and Leanne (who has special needs
experience) have three adopted children of their own. They have a keen
interest in supporting abandoned children with special needs, who very
often don’t have anywhere else to go. “The fortitude, perseverance and
unbelievable strength that these women show is amazing,” says Colleen,
who became a board member and chairperson four years ago.
“We are in awe of them. And the
carers, the women who look after the
babies and children in the cottages
at the home. They have a deep
connection with the kids, sharing love
and humour with them. This isn’t an
institution, it’s a home filled with love.”
Apart from HOLAH, Likon Ithemba
also operates Bowl of Plenty, a
feeding and support scheme in the
local community, the charity Hop
Shop which brings in much-needed
funds for the organisation, and the
Vikela Baby Saver – a state-of-the-art
‘baby safe’ for safe and anonymous
baby abandonment, situated in the
boundary wall of the charity shop.
Meet the North Coast ladies
A businesswoman and mother of two,
Colleen works in the ‘transformational
change’ industry. A self-leadership
mentor and trainer, she also runs
conscious leadership, educator and
parenting courses. It was through
these courses, she says, that she met
Kim and Leanne and learned about
HOLAH. “They attended one of my
courses and our relationship grew
from there. The more I found out
about HOLAH, the more my heart
started to grow for the organisation.”
Although still juggling her own family
and work commitments, Colleen
joined the organisation in 2018. Not
long afterwards, she took on the role
of chairperson. “I probably played my
most pivotal role during Covid,” she
says. “We did everything to save the
organisation. Our overheads don’t
go away, even when funding stops.
Babies still need care and carers still
need salaries. We need electricity and
food. It was a real crisis for us, as it was
for many others.” Despite managing
to keep HOLAH afloat, Colleen says
they realised they needed more support. That was when she turned to her good
friend, Dominique.
Originally from Durban, Dominique lived in Johannesburg for seven years before
returning in 2011 to get married and settle down. While in Jo’burg, she managed
her own successful marketing and promotions agency. When they returned to
Durban and she had her first baby, she spent a few years filling the role of mom,
wife and ‘homemaker’.
She now works with her husband as the marketing manager of Just Flour Mills.
“Colleen sent me a long voice note about HOLAH needing some help. I knew
I could assist with my marketing and fundraising background.” She became a
member of the board in September last year. “There is so much need out there,
and this work is just so fulfilling. It’s not a commitment I take lightly, but I get
back what I give tenfold.”
How can you help?
Here are two ways to ‘plug in’ and lend a helping hand:
* Donations to the charity shop: Emigrating, spring cleaning or just need to get
rid of anything that is in good working order? Donate it!
* Fund-a-future: Each child at HOLAH has his or her own individual needs such
as nappies, special food, medicine, therapy and education). If you would like
to support a child, have a look at the website and you can ‘meet’ each of the
children at HOLAH and find out what their needs are. You can make a once-off or
monthly donation of any amount you choose.
PROMOTION
Infertility
Despite the increasing number of people impacted
by infertility, the subject is still not a topic openly
discussed. Let’s change that!
Research shows infertility in women was ranked as the fifth highest and most
serious global disability, while in this country, as many as one in six couples are
impacted. It occurs in both men and women with a number of risk factors ...
occupational and environmental risks, age, smoking and alcohol use.
One of the most common risk factor for infertility in women is Polycystic Ovary
Syndrome (PCOS). Eight to 13 percent of women suffer from this condition - a
hormonal disorder that involves reproductive, cosmetic and metabolic problems.
Symptoms commonly associated with PCOS that women should be aware
of include: • If you are under 35 and have been having regular unprotected
intercourse for six to twelve months without falling pregnant • Experiencing
painful periods • Having irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles • Elevated levels
of the male hormone androgen which results in excess body hair and acne
The symptoms associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can cause a lot
of distress and the disorder affects women in so many different ways and to
different degrees. That’s why it’s best not to assume that you actually have PCOS
until you’ve been diagnosed by a gynaecologist.
According to 3Sixty Biomedicine’s CEO Boitumelo Sebambo, in cases where
infertility can be linked to the hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS, patients
who make use of products like Salome Fertility that contain
Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol, have seen an increase in their ovulation, a
reduction in their hyperandrogenism and the oxidative stress in follicular fluid.
The efficacy of the Salome Fertility product lies in it containing the correct ratio
of Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol, extracted from the pod of the Carob Bean
Tree. Clinical studies have shown that these natural extracts are instrumental in
helping manage the regulation of ovarian function in PCOS patients.
All Salome Fertility products are manufactured locally, and are
based on herbal extracts which have limited side effects.
And because they are
nappi coded, they are recognised and reimbursed by
certain medical aids.
The full Salome range of products that helps to manage menstrual
pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, premenstrual syndrome,
infertility in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and
menopause, are available from pharmacies nationwide or online
Neogenesis Health
Natural and
safe healing
Arthritis, although more common
in older people, can start to rear its
head from your early 40s, if not earlier.
Instead of gulping down pain meds,
look at this alternative option.
Getting older definitely isn’t always easy or fun. And too
often, it is accompanied by a presentation of aches and
pains that come with the degeneration of our joints.
As we get older, the cartilage in our joints (the cushioning
or shock absorbers) cannot regenerate like it used to
when we were young and full of ‘bounce’!
This loss of the cushioning or erosion in our joints
can result in degenerative patterns such as arthritis or
osteoarthritis – both of which lead to pain, stiffness,
chronic joint inflammation and those dreaded ‘aches and
pains’ we hear our grandparents complaining about.
These can manifest as a lack of mobility and an intense
pain on movement, especially felt in our knees, hips and
other joints that have had the highest impact because of
activity.
Traditionally, the only solutions have been to use nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and other
over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce
pain, but these often affect the gut lining, liver and
kidneys - even if used in moderation. These medicines
also only manage the symptoms and do not treat the
root cause, which is the erosion of cartilage.
Scientists have been searching for new, safer alternatives,
and, according to the team from NeoGenesis Health,
Natural Egg Shell Membrane (NEM) is what they have
discovered.
NEM is a special type of hydrolysed collagen that has
been clinically proven to show incredible breakthrough
effects by stimulating the regeneration of cartilage,
thereby reducing the severe pain and lack of mobility
associated with various forms of arthritis within days.
According to the NeoGenesis team, the product is
not only effective, but is a safe alternative, healing and
repairing the gut lining, with no negative effects on the
liver or kidneys. It is a groundbreaking option to treat
key pathologies of arthritis, including inflammation and
cartilage degradation.
Heavenly spa spoils
There is a stunning new, upmarket beauty sanctuary tucked away in Salt Rock with
skilled, professional therapists and treatments using high-end, exclusive products.
We popped in for a visit recently.
Text: Leah Shone
From the moment I entered the
Endless Beauty spa, it was clear that
this establishment had been created
with passion and care, and was
being run professionally and with the
utmost attention to detail.
Proud owner Tash Parsons greeted
me at the door, and I could tell within
minutes of meeting her that the
launch of this beautiful salon was the
realisation of a long-time dream for
this ambitious young woman.
Having studied somatology in
Hillcrest for three years, Tash moved
to Ballito where she managed a
high-end spa for seven years before
Covid closed the doors. “When things
opened up again, I decided to go
on my own as a mobile therapist. I
had always dreamed of opening my
own spa and having a base one day,
though,” she says.
Endless Beauty is situated in the Salt
Rock Shopping Centre and is tastefully
designed with three treatment rooms
(one big enough to accommodate
couples or friends). They offer a wide
range of services, from hands and
feet to incredible facials, tinting and
waxing and professional eyelash
extensions and, of course, amazing massages. During my visit I was treated to a
manicure and an 80-minute Cellular Recreation Face Treatment. Endless Beauty
is the only spa in the area that uses the exclusive range of Team Dr Joseph
products. “I have always thought very highly of this range and am so excited
to be using it in my spa. The products are all made with a combination of one
hundred percent natural ingredients and highly advanced technology, so you
get the best of both worlds – plants and science,” says Tash.
We started with the 80-minute facial. There are 45-minute and 50-minute facial
options as well, but this one includes a more concentrated serum and wonderful
massages. The treatment is incredibly luxurious and relaxing and evokes all of
your senses from the very start. A bit of deep breathing, a lymph drainage light
pressure massage and warm compresses all help to relax you, and then a spray
of pore-refining essence (with essential oils) really awakens the senses before the
facial begins. The treatment includes a cleanse (with a milk for mature skin or gel
for oily skin), followed by an enzymatic (not chemical) peel, which is made from
pawpaw and pineapple and helps to dissolve dead skin cells, clear pigmentation
and clear up underlying congestion (there is no down-time).
Then, using the ‘Well Aging’ Team Dr Joseph range, Tash applied a serum,
masque, moisturiser, lip contour cream and revitalising eye cream. She finished
off with a light sunblock. The whole range is available to buy in-store as well.
Massage is a big part of this treatment, and it’s clear that Tash is both a skilled and
experienced therapist. She has magic hands! “When it comes to the massage,
we try to feel out what the client’s needs are, and then focus on those areas. It
is usually a neck, shoulders and head massage, and an arm and hand massage.”
After the absolutely heavenly facial spoil, I dragged myself off of the comfy bed
and was led through to the pedicure station, where the lovely therapists greeted
me with a bottle of water and set about doing my pedicure. A visit to this little
gem really is such a spoil, especially if you value excellent service and
high-quality treatments. They also still offer mobile spa treatments on request,
which are ideal for customers who are homebound (for whatever reason), or
would like to host a pamper party at home.
Women
in fashion
From oversized flares to fabulous pops
of colour and gorgeous prints, this
season’s fashion trends are as varied and
unique as each of these phenomenal
businesswomen, all of whom own
exceptional stores at Lifestyle Centre Ballito
These leading lady entrepreneurs share a little about their biggest challenges in business and what it takes to make it in
the fashion industry, how they juggle work and home life and their fashion trend tips for 2022/2023.
MUZE – WENDY AND STEPHANIE
MUZE is a part of Wendy and Stephanie’s everyday life and they always strive to make sure
fun is at the centre of it all (often bringing their family and friends along for the sometimes
crazy ride)! They want women to feel beautiful and confident when wearing MUZE
clothing, and believe that if they remain authentic and true to who they are, success will
follow. In terms of trends, the ladies say that now is not the time to be wary of wearing
colour! “The trends are all about bright, bold colour, checks and stripes. And, as we head
into the warmer seasons, bold print on print and wide flowy palazzo pants are hot!” The
MUZE ladies believe fashion is about finding the balance between on-trend seasonal
garments and sustainable fashion; items that their customers will wear for seasons to come.
WHITE SUMMER – CARMEN
Carmen believes in being hands-on and not getting distracted by what everyone
else is doing. “You must stay true to your look and your goals and always look after
your relationships with suppliers, customers and employees.” She says finding a
work-life balance is always a challenge. “It only works because of all the support I
get from amazing family, friends and my staff.” Carmen, a lover of lists, also thinks it’s
important to plan and have lots of ‘tick off lists’. Her trend forecast is to add a splash
of colour to your summer look - tangerine, hot pink and Grecian blue. “If neutrals are
more your thing, accessorise with colour. Wear oversized button-up tops, short sets
and dresses (both maxi and mini) and add a bit of crochet to show off some skin.”
SWEET PEAS – Stacy AND Ché
Despite all of the challenges thrown their way over the last two and a half years, Stacy
and Ché say they are very blessed to work in an environment and with people they
love and cherish. They are passionate about their brand and what they do – so much
so that it often doesn’t feel like work. Stacy and Ché are devoted to timeless fashion
and simplistic pieces that stand the test of time. Their inspiration is drawn from classic
designs with a touch of contemporary elements of minimalism. Their philosophy for
the brand is ‘less is more’ and they embrace footwear and garments that embody ‘slow
fashion’: made from high quality materials, built for longevity, surpass passing trends,
eco-friendly in material and production, fair working conditions and fair pay.
FRENCH KISSES – FRANCI
Franci stands firmly behind the ethical choice of sustainable fashion
culture, as opposed to fast-fashion - and that is based on personal principles.
Franci believes in staying loyal to what you know is right as a foundation for
personal success. She ensures that she sets boundaries around her work and
family time. “It’s not always possible to find a balance, so my advice is ‘don’t sweat
the small stuff’. Sometimes I only get it eighty percent right, and that’s okay.”
Franci feels far more productive when she is at her happiest, rather than feeling
stressed or guilty. Franci’s fashion advice? “Don’t follow the trends! Choose what
you wear as a means to express who you are.”
30 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga August 2022
BEACH AND BEYOND – JENNY
When it comes to business, Jenny believes that finding a niche
market and offering something unique is what gives you the edge
in the competitive fashion arena. Jenny and her husband both work
in their business together and she says it isn’t easy to not ‘talk shop’
at home. But Jenny loves what she does, so says she doesn’t mind
business spilling over into their private life. They ensure they take
trips together as often as possible. When it comes to fashion trends,
Jenny believes you should keep it classic. “Quality never goes out of
style. Also, invest in good quality fabrics such as pure silk and linen.”
CASTAWAY LOVE – MANDY AND Tanya
Mandy and Tanya’s work in the fashion industry has always felt unique, in the fact
that they are a thrift store. “We aim to educate our customers on the facts around
fast-fashion and its effects on the environment.” Approaching five years of being
based at Lifestyle Centre Ballito, Mandy and Tanya (both of whom have three
children), believe they have got themselves into a good rhythm that works for
them. They spend most mornings at the store and then with the children in the
afternoons. “Our systems run smoothly with a strong team of assistants who are
reliable.” Mandy and Tanya encourage the ‘maximalist look’, where you dress to
make a statement! “Looks are to be colourful, bold, creative and embellished.”
HOLIDAY – MORGAN
Morgan spends a lot of time forecasting prints and styles so that their store offering
is always on trend … and a little crazy! Morgan, a working mom, says the most
challenging thing for her is finding the right work/home life balance. “I love my
work, but I also have mom-guilt, for not always being with my kids! With the
feeling that the fashion retail industry is quite saturated at the moment, it takes a
lot of time and energy to stay one step ahead and offer unique products to our
customers.” As for 2022/23 trends, Morgan is a firm believer that ‘anything goes!’.
And, she says, fashion is about rediscovering creativity and optimism - from sequins
and beading, to mixing colours and prints, it all works. Anything that sparks joy is in!
RUSH – SALLY
Working in the competitive fashion industry, Rush owner Sally spends a lot
of time researching new styles for each season. “This enables us to constantly
change up, remain unique and be competitive,” she says. Although she finds
balancing work and business tough, travelling and gaining new experiences
helps her find balance. “When you own a business, it will forever be a part
of your life, so finding a way for them to live harmoniously alongside one
another is key.” In terms of trend forecasts for the season, Sally says ‘trendy
comfort’ is still a large focus. “Items like bomber jackets are great to have –
they are classic but can keep each outfit fresh and fashionable.”
ONE mind body soul – Nicci
“I think you officially know you are an entrepreneur when you sincerely start
to understand the meaning of cash flow management,” says ONE owner
Nicci. “I know I will get an Amen from fellow entrepreneurs!” In terms of
work-life balance, Nicci believes that building this brand has allowed her
the freedom to integrate family, friendship and business. “Understanding
and support from everyone gets you through the rocky start up beginnings
and helps you keep the faith!” And her fashion trend tips? “Explore bold
new colour combinations, never say no to a print, embrace silhouettes you
never imagined yourself in … it’s liberating and surprising at the same time!”
A true passion for fashion
A fashion brand created by a millennial for millennials. Yayarar is a passion-projectturned-successful
online business that was started during lockdown. We caught up
with the ambitious, driven and quirky founder, Aishwarya Bedessy.
Text: Leah Shone
Yayarar founder Aishwarya Bedessy
She may be young, but this dynamic
‘boss babe’ doesn’t let that get in her
way. In fact, Aishwarya doesn’t let
much get in her way.
Her business, Yayarar, is the first online
store in South Africa to offer fullycustomisable
bridal lehengas and
sherwanis, as well as Eastern, Western
and Indo-Afro event wear. It has
grown to more than 10 000 Instagram
followers since its inception in June
2020.
Getting a dress made by Yayarar
is like having direct access to your
very own fashion designer who will
customise and create a beautiful
outfit specifically designed for your
style, taste and body.
It wasn’t easy starting a business
during a pandemic, Aishwarya says,
but the naysayers who tried to
dissuade her made her even more
determined to make it a success. “It
did seem a bit insane to be starting
up a business that would ultimately
rely solely on events taking place,
but we aren’t most people and we
managed to make it work,” she laughs.
Born and bred in Durban, Aishwarya
studied environmental management
while taking part in pageants and
running a photography business
after school. She has always been
passionate about fashion, though.
“I’ve always been extremely
opinionated when it comes to fashion
and style. My aunts are in the clothing
industry, so I grew up learning about
fabrics, sample styles and quality
checks. Fashion is so much more than
what you put on your body - it’s an
extension of who you are and how
you feel on that particular day.
It’s ‘art in motion’ and I think it’s
beautiful how everyone interprets
that in their own way.”
The idea to start Yayarar was
something Aishwarya says she had
been thinking about doing for many
years. “I always wanted to create
My vision was to serve the
greater South African Indian
community and then branch
off into Africa with our
range of ‘Indo-Afro’ wear.
a platform for women and men who, like me, were
looking for pieces that were different and customised
to their exact preference. I knew my company would be
completely e-commerce-based and, two years later, we
really have thrived with this business model. I honestly
don’t ever see us having an old fashioned ‘brick and
mortar’ store.”
Very important to her, she says, is being able to provide
designs and fabrics that are unusual and not seen
anywhere else, especially for those clients who want to
turn heads when they walk into a room!
“I also wanted my brand to be inclusive for all body sizes
and shapes. My vision was to serve the greater South
African Indian community and then branch of into Africa
as a whole with our range of ‘Indo-Afro’ wear. My biggest
goal is to extend Yayarar’s footprint across our beautiful
continent,” she says.
Getting a dress made with Yayarar means you can design your
dream piece right down to the shade of thread that will be
used to put the garment together. “I always hated the thought
of paying an exorbitant amount for an item from a local store,
knowing that it had been there for years and wasn’t even that
‘grand’.”
Because the company is completely e-commerce-based,
Aishwayra says all meeting are done remotely from the comfort
of one’s own home and she can reach clients all around
the country - and world. “We even take clients through the
measurement process via video call.”
When she’s not hard at work on her business, Aishwayra spends
a lot of time reading and taking her Great Dane, Xana, for walks
on the beach. “My life revolves around my family, though, and
I dedicate much of my energy to them.” She also listens to
podcasts, which she does while doing other things, allowing
her to use her time wisely and efficiently. “We have 24 hours in
every day and we must make them count!”
We asked Aishwayra to share her top three tips for choosing (or
designing) the perfect event outfit.
“Firstly, make sure it’s something you love. Don’t just go for
trends. Remember, if it’s trending, you’re not the only one
wearing it. Secondly, your outfit must fit you well. You need to
be comfortable throughout the event and not adjusting and
fiddling with it the whole time. Lastly, be confident. Try not to
over-think your style or what you’re wearing. Remember, ‘the
person maketh the outfit’.
Calorie-conscious convenience
While most of us were binge-watching Netflix, comfort-eating and piling on
unwanted ‘lockdown kilograms’, chef Sam was losing weight, getting healthy and
creating what would eventually become the menu for her very own La Luciabased,
calorie-conscious frozen food business.
Text: Leah Shone
Like most small start-up business success stories these days, Sam’s started in lockdown. In fact, it all began during her
mandatory 14 days of self-isolation after returning to South Africa from working as a chef at sea on cruise liners.
Fast-forward less than two years later, and Sam (who is now also 18kg lighter) is the owner of a very successful online
frozen food business called The Frozen Bistro. She offers delicious, calorie-conscious convenience meals to people
who are either too busy or just prefer not to cook.
A born-and-bred Durban girl, 36-year-old Sam grew up surrounded by family in the hospitality industry. Her parents
have owned the Beside Still Waters Boutique Hotel for 15 years, which now also houses an open-to-the-public
restaurant called Neighbourhood Café, and her brother owns the popular coffee shop, Gatvol Coffee, situated on the
same property.
After studying at the Christina Martin School of Food & Wine and then spending a couple of years working both in
and out of the food industry, Sam set off to work on ships where she spent the next six years of her life.
“It was an incredible experience. I gained so much knowledge during my
time at sea and learned loads about fine dining and vegetarian food. I
would probably still be there if I hadn’t been forced to come home,” she
says.
But, when the pandemic did force Sam to return to South Africa (and
isolate for 14 days), she was also forced to take a long, hard look at her
health. “I got a bee in my bonnet and decided to lose some of the weight
I had picked up owing to the very unhealthy lifestyle I was living on the
ship.”
Sam moved into a small apartment on her parents’ property and, armed
with just a small convection oven, started eating loads of healthy
vegetables, experimenting with simple recipes … and doing some online
exercise classes!
“I’ve always had issues with my weight fluctuating up and down and I had
put on a lot of weight I lost five kilograms in the first month and realised
that it wasn’t really all that hard. I began hearing people talk about how
much weight they were gaining during lockdown and realised that
perhaps I could help them by creating some calorie-conscious meals.”
Sam started putting together a small menu of about six meals and
cooked for a few friends who were struggling to find the time to cook
and eat healthily themselves. Then more people began enquiring about
her meals and she realised there was a potential to build her business.
“We now have a 24-meal menu and, although it is very calorie-conscious,
it is by no means diet food. I’ve basically just tweaked simple dishes that
people like and are familiar with, and done them a little differently so they
have fewer calories.”
As a chef, Sam says she could never serve tasteless, ‘diet’ food, but rather
cooks food that she enjoys. “It’s restaurant-quality food that you can grab
out of your freezer at a fraction of the price, with way fewer calories,” she
says. While she does change the menu slightly seasonally, Sam generally
keeps it quite consistent, sticking to the favourites that always do well.
So, what’s on the menu?
“It’s really just pure, no-nonsense, good quality food.” Some of the dishes
on her order form include: Extra Lean Beef Lasagne, Greek Lamb Stew,
Chicken Pot(ato) Pie, Lean Moussaka, Tuscan-Style Chicken Pasta Bake,
Broccoli & Artichoke Casserole, French Onion Soup and Prawn Bisque …
to name just a few.
When it comes to knowing what to order from The Frozen Bistro, Sam
says it all depends on your lifestyle and your needs. “I have a client from
Ballito who orders an entire month’s worth of food for herself and her
kids, and others who just order a few meals a week to fill in on their busier
days.”
Sam has also tried to keep her prices affordable and in line with other
frozen foods on the market rather than other ‘health foods’, which are
usually much more expensive. She says she is happy with the progress
her little business has made so far, and incredibly grateful to her family for
helping her get started.
Sam enjoys getting to know her clients and is always available to chat
on WhatsApp about ingredients, calories and BMR calculations. She has
a lovely monthly blog post on her website, which is definitely worth
checking out as well.
Sam recently also took over the role of head chef at the Neighbourhood
Café, which opened to the public at the end of last year. “I helped out
with the menu planning and overseeing the restaurant initially, but now
I’m here full time and loving it.”
The restaurant serves café-style breakfast and lunch from 7.30am to
3.30pm. They also do wine tasting and fine dining evenings a few times a
month and will soon be opening a wine bar.
Pork belly skewers with sticky bitter orange dipping marinade
Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin from Steenberg Farm has shared her up-until-nowsecret
signature recipe for pork belly skewers with sticky bitter orange dipping
marinade. They take less than an hour to prep and prepare, and this serves six.
You’ll need: 500g pork belly – no bone, and rind removed; olive oil; Togarashi
spice; salt and pepper
To make: Halve the pork belly pieces, place on a skewer and drizzle with olive oil.
Season with salt and togarashi spice. Togarashi has a nice chilli bite, so use as
much you need to suit your taste buds.
In a preheated pan, pan-fry the pork on medium heat until golden on both sides.
Turn down to a low heat and continue cooking until cooked through.
For the sticky bitter orange dipping marinade, you’ll need: 125g sugar; 30ml red wine
vinegar; 500ml chicken stock; 10ml soy sauce; 35 drops Angostura Bitters;
1 orange; 15g corn flour; 20ml water; 30g butter;
To make: Place the sugar in a pot on medium heat, allow the sugar to melt and
start to caramelise. Once the sugar reaches a light brown colour; deglaze with
red wine vinegar and stock. Bring the sauce to the boil and reduce by half, add
the juice of one orange, Angostura Bitters, soy sauce, and butter. Dissolve the
corn flour in the water, thicken the sauce with the corn flour and water solution
and season with salt.
Serve the pork skewers warm with the sticky sauce in a bowl on the side for
dipping or drizzled liberally over them. Serve, obviously, with a glass of your
favourite Steenberg wine.
Keeping up with family and friends when organising dinner has become
occasionally ... all of the above. Hello Plant-Forward Keto, which gives
you an array of options and flexible meal plans to go beyond the diet
and embrace your love of food! In this new book Liz MacDowell shows
you how to keep healthy plant foods at the centre of your plate while
allowing a little meat on the side when you want to, while still reaping
all the benefits of a keto diet. The fun and delicious plant-based recipes
focus on using whole-food ingredients while allowing for mixing and
matching of smaller amounts of animal protein. Penguin, R540
The love of bees
Passionate about the busy little winged insects
responsible for pollinating our plants and increasing
yield of our food crops, Trevor Thompson is a pioneer of
beekeeping on the North Coast.
Text: Leah Shone
When he receives enquiries about his
beekeeping courses, Trevor says there
are always two groups of people that
emerge: those who are in it for the
love of the bees, and those who are
only in it exclusively to make money.
The latter, he says, don’t usually end
up being very good beekeepers.
Trevor and his wife, artist and floral
arranger Sharneen, have lived on
the historical Seaforth Farm near
The Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock for 57
years. They have been running their
Seaforth Farm bed and breakfast
for 27. Trevor’s family are also wellknown
for having owned and run the
Thompson’s family butchery for many
years.
Despite the incredibly obvious
respect and love he has for bees,
and the fact that he has been doing
it for more than 20 years, the former
butcher and skilled carpenter says
he never dreamed he would end up
being a beekeeper. In fact, he says,
laughing, it all came about quite by
accident after he suddenly came into
possession of a large number of pine
boarding that he wasn’t quite sure
what to do with. While on holiday in
the Berg, Trevor saw an advert for a
talk about beehives and decided to
have a listen. “It was a misty, rainy day
and we had nothing else to do, so I
went along. Afterwards, I thought it
might be a good way to use up some
of the wood.”
Little did he know, he would end
up being captivated by these tiny,
hard-working winged creatures. “It
caught me completely by surprise. I
was fascinated. When you look at the
overall picture and see how they work
and operate, you cannot doubt that
there is a God. Their work ethic and
ethos are all about working for the
greater good. They are completely
unselfish, working together in the
38 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga August 2022
swarm, and that’s what makes them so successful.”
Trevor started out with five or six boxes and friends and
neighbours began asking him to bring his bees along
to their orchards. He now has more than 500 boxes and
offers a bee removal service, as well as two-day, hands-on
beekeeping courses in their beautiful Salt Rock garden.
Bee pollination services, he says, are in huge demand,
especially for macadamia nut and litchi farms. “Bees can
increase a crop yield by more than 40 percent,” says Trevor,
who will leave his bees in an orchard for up to three
months at a time.
Moving the bees is quite a challenge, especially in warmer
months when they become quite defensive. “You can’t
move them during the day, as that is when the field bees
are out of the hive doing work, which they start at the first
light of day. At night, though, they are all inside the hive.”
Bees don’t live very long, only about eight to ten
weeks, and swarms can range from 5 000 to 8 000, and
sometimes going up to 50 000 bees. The stronger the
swarm, Trevor says, the more defensive they are. Our
African bees, he says, are also the most venomous in the
world, and just one teaspoon of their venom could kill
you in 30 seconds!
Trevor’s amateur beekeeping courses are perfect for
farmers, retired people and those looking to start a little
apiary of their own as a hobby. Even if you never do any
beekeeping after the course, it is a wonderful way to learn
more about nature and the insects and plants around you.
“You will come out of it with a much better understanding
and respect for the environment, and learn a lot of things
you didn’t know about the weather, pollinators and
pesticides,” he says.
The courses are run over two days, with about six to eight
people in each. “We start off with some theory, where I
demonstrate the equipment and teach people a bit about
the biology of bees and their habits.” On the second day,
Trevor provides bee jackets and takes his students out
to his apiary, where they can see the inside of a bee hive
up close and in detail. “If there is honey, we’ll harvest it. I
also show them how to combine two weak swarms and
moving them into one box.”
Trevor is a great resource for delicious, organic coastal
honey. His dark, molasses-coloured honey is different from
what most people are used to, but has an unbelievable
taste and must be tried! You can buy it locally in Ballito at
Homegrown at the Lifestyle Centre or at Tiffany’s Spar in
Salt Rock.
Living the dream
Text: Leah Shone
A lover of all-things-nature, especially trees, Ballito-based wood craftsman and father
of two, Ross Nixon, creates beautifully handcrafted furniture and gifts, and his business,
Nixon Woodcraft, is growing with each passing day.
Even from when he was a young boy, Ross always found himself happiest when submerged in and surrounded by nature.
From a childhood spent surfing and lifesaving on the South Coast, to studying environmental management, running an
outdoor adventure camp and then living and working in the wilderness on an island in northern Japan, his love for the
outdoors runs deep.
And his passion clearly shines through in his work. A skilled carpenter, 40-year-old Ross carefully and lovingly handcrafts
custom furniture and restores, refurbishes and replenishes sentimental timber pieces at his workshop based in Sheffield
Beach. Despite his obvious natural skill for woodwork though, Ross says he never thought he would ever end up working
with his hands. “I used to tinker around, like most boys, taking things apart and putting them back together, but I actually
never did really well at woodwork when I was at school.” After matric, Ross spent a couple of years working at Spirit of
Adventure – a leadership camp for school-going kids – and then studied environmental management at university. He
returned to the camp where he worked as camp director for six years. When they got married, Ross and his wife Lara
decided it was time to travel and broaden their horizons a little before settling down.
They moved to Japan where they were employed to teach English and expose the Japanese children to Western culture. “It
was an amazing experience. We lived in Hokkaido, an island in northern
Japan that is really in the middle of a complete wilderness. The winters
are very extreme (with temperatures dropping to -30C°), and we
would get up to six metres of snow. It’s quite similar to Alaska and I
snowboarded my guts out in winter,” he laughs. During the summer
months, when there wasn’t much else to do, Ross spent his time hiking
and walking in the mountains and fly-fishing in streams. He bought a
basic fly-tying kit and started making his own flies in the evenings. “It is
quite a detailed process and you have to get the proportions right, but
as I got better my confidence grew and I realised I was actually quite
good at doing things with my hands.” When the snow had melted,
he started collecting small wood samples and discs on his walks and
replaced all the knife handles in their house with wooden handles
that he carved and shaped with a handsaw and sandpaper. The
woodworking bug had bitten. “I began learning on the ‘world university’
called Youtube (you can teach yourself anything online these days) and
when we moved back to South Africa four years later, I carried on with
my hobby.”
When Ross and a few of his friends heard about an elderly man who
was selling up his entire woodworking workshop (including all the tools
and machines he had collected over the years), they decided to club
together and buy them from him. Everything went into storage for an
entire year before they found a mini-factory premises and began hiring
out the machines to friends who wanted to use them for small jobs. “It
never crossed my mind that I would ever end up doing this full-time,”
says Ross, who started working in construction when he returned to
South Africa. “I mean, we all dream of living on a smallholding, growing
our own veggies and having a workshop in the back ... but that always
seemed like a pipe dream.” Despite not being ‘entrepreneurial’ by
nature, Ross decided (with the support of his family) to take over the
workshop and starting making wooden furniture full time in 2018.
“My business model was literally non-existent. I just thought I’d make
some small and medium furniture pieces for people,” he laughs. “I spent
a couple of years figuring it out and it really was (and still is) an organic
learning process.” With his workshop now situated near Breadologie
(in Sheffield Beach), Ross creates sophisticated, rustic pieces that show
off the natural beauty of the wood he works with. “I’ve always been
fascinated with trees and I love wood as a medium. I try not to change
it too much, and the more natural I can keep it to show off the beauty
of the wood, the better.” Wherever possible, Ross uses reclaimed wood
or alien species to make his custom commissioned pieces, including
side tables, tables, benches, planters and lamps. He also works with
kitchens and built-in cupboards.
Road to Comrades
From barely being able to finish a 5km parkrun, to now readying herself to
participate in her first Comrades Marathon, Get It Ballito.Umhlanga graphic designer
Nicole von Metzinger’s running story is similar to so many others who will be at the
start of ‘the ultimate human race’ on 28 August.
Although she has always loved sport,
long-distance running was never
something Nicole thought she would
ever end up doing. In fact, she says,
her running journey has taught her a
lot about herself that she never knew.
Like most runners, the ‘bug’ bit her
quite unexpectedly a couple of years
ago. Now, after having completed
a few marathons and ultra-trail
runs, her sights are set firmly on the
Comrades.
Nicole’s fitness journey began in 2018
when a group of friends invited her
to join them in the Warrior Race. At
the time, Nicole was playing netball
once a week. “I thought I would give
it a go. I mean, how hard could it be,
right? Well, I had to call it quits after
3km and I remember thinking, I’m too
young to be this unfit,” she laughs.
Disappointed and wanting to
‘redeem’ herself, Nicole quit smoking
and joined the Ringside Boxing Gym.
“I started seeing how my body was
changing and, more importantly
(like my trainer Tyrone pointed out),
I started seeing what my body could
do.”
With the goal of finishing the next
Warrior Race in mind, Nicole knew
she had to do some running as well.
So, she headed off to the parkrun at
Holla Trails. “I dragged some friends
along and we pretty much walked
most of it. I remember us setting little
goals – we’d run to the next tree and
then walk. We felt like we were dying.”
Slowly Nicole’s running (and
confidence) began to improve.
She entered fun obstacle races and
trained at Ringside every day. When
she finally managed to finish the
Warrior Race in 2019, she says she
was proud but realised that running
had been her weakness.
Her first 10km race was in Durban in
October that year. “It was amazing
running with so many people from
so many different walks of life. I loved
it!”
Then, she started entering any and
every race she could. After her first
15km she felt like she could have
gone further and decided to do a
half marathon. The bug had officially
bitten.
“They don’t call it a ‘runner’s high’ for nothing. When the bug
bites, you can’t help but keep on pushing yourself and setting
new goals.”
As for most, Covid lockdown was hard for Nicole, who had
just reached a massive running goal (her half marathon). She
knew how quickly running fitness could be lost, so she ran
loops around her house and tried to stay motivated.
When restrictions were lifted, she joined the outdoor
Adventure Obstacle Training (AOT) Club. “I was hooked
immediately. Many of the people I was training with were
excellent athletes who I really looked up to. Training with
them (even though I always finished dead last) motivated me.”
Last year Nicole turned her focus firmly towards running,
aiming to run her first marathon. She also found the ‘fun tribe’,
a group of runners from different backgrounds with different
goals and paces who come together to run and have fun.
When she was nearing her 32nd birthday, she decided it
would be a good idea to run 32km to celebrate it! Her mom,
Delicia and stepdad, Grant, helped her plan the route and
seconded her, and friends joined her for different parts of the
run along the way. “I pretty much ran around the whole of
Ballito,”
When the ‘virtual Comrades’ came around last year, Nicole
decided to go for the half Comrades (even though she hadn’t
done a full marathon yet). “It was tough, and after 30km I was
ready to sit down,” she admits. But she pushed through. An
ITB injury caused her to take a step back from running after
that, however.
Not to be deterred, Nicole bought a bicycle and continued
cross-training. She also started working with AOT trainer
Claude Eksteen, who set up a training programme and
helped adjust her running technique to avoid injuries and
improve her running.
When she was able to run again towards the end of last
year, it was only short distances. “I told myself, if I can’t go
far, then I’ll go fast.” A month into her new plan Nicole says
she could already notice a difference. She was using less
energy to go faster and it was pain-free. When planning the
years’ goals on 1 January, she decided to enter Comrades
this year, and completed her qualifying marathon in May
with ease. “If it scares you, it’s a sign you need to do it.”
Nicole’s programme now includes lots of cross-training
(yoga, cycling, obstacle training and boxing) and running.
“Don’t be scared to be bad at something new,” are the
words she now lives by.
She is nervously excited about taking her place at the
Comrades Marathon start line. “I’m scared of not finishing,
but also proud to have gotten this far. I have already done
a lot of hard things, and I know that if I dig really deep, I
can push through. The love and support I’ve felt from the
moment I entered the race has been amazing and a true
reflection of what Comrades is all about.”
Running for a cause
A true empath, with a special heart for animals in need,
Nicole and her running friend Franky have decided to
raise money and dedicate their run to the Brighter Future
Sanctuary Project (which neuters dogs and cats in rural
areas and townships). To support them, check out their
Get mentally prepped!
Preparing yourself mentally for a big run is as important as preparing yourself
physically. In fact, some might say it’s even more important. Whether you’re joining
the thousands of Comrades Marathon runners this month, or are getting ready for your
first 10km, half or full marathon, here are some tips for getting your mindset right for a
long race (and for life!).
Running – especially the long-distance variety – is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. We asked highly
qualified and experienced executive, team and life coach and coach trainer, Mark Fraser-Grant, to share some tips for
getting your head into the right space before lacing up.
Text: Leah Shone
Passionate about people and helping them set and achieve goals (while having fun), Mark is also a runner. “I love to run,
although I only started later in life at the grand old age of 51 (I am now 55). I have found that I have been able to use the
tools of coaching and mental training to improve not only my pace and endurance, but also experience fun, joy and a sense
of accomplishment.”
While consistent physical training is an absolute must, Mark also suggests running with seasoned runners who know the
drill. “Their knowledge will transfer to you, plus, runners generally love to share.”
Tips for getting into the right
running mindset:
1. First and most important, believe you can
do it! Starting out with the proper mindset is
essential. Link it to a committed decision or goal.
Like being mentally strong and physically fit.
2. Learn to operate in the ‘stretch zone’, which
is roughly 10% to 15% outside of your comfort
zone. Your mind records that you can improve,
and this embeds in your consciousness
and becomes second nature. You’ll see
improvements relatively quickly, which supports
a growth mindset.
3. Monitor your self-talk and use running to
become more self-aware. Is your self-talk being
fearful, doubting and discouraging? Do you
make excuses and procrastinate? The good
news is you can change that by intentionally
replacing negative thoughts with empowering
ones. This, like physical training, may take time.
However, it is so worth it. Be patient and treat
your doubts and fears like hurt children who
need to hand over to the powerful adult version
of yourself.
4. Set realistic goals and, once achieved, learn
to celebrate success and acknowledge your
growth.
5. Life has many challenges and living in
KwaZulu-Natal needs a dose of ‘Kwazilience’.
That stuff can get heavy, so put the baggage
down, focusing on the beauty around us. Note
everything you can be grateful for and cultivate
a sense of humour and fun. Have perspective -
there’s no need to be a ‘doom scroller’ (spending
excessive amounts of time online scrolling
through negative news)! Lighter people travel
faster and have more natural resilience and
a possibility mindset. Every challenge has an
opportunity with it. It’s the law of polarity.
6. Realise that your subconscious records every
living detail of your life - especially anything
repeated - therefore these healthy habits and
mental conditioning can be applied to business
and life. You can do it and flourish in life.
Ocean positive eyewear
Trendy, functional and designed for those who love outdoor adventures ... we caught
up with the Ballito-based co-founder of 30 South Eyewear, Jamie Cockayne, to find out
how this exciting local brand is evolving.
Text: Leah Shone
Lifelong friends, adventure buddies and business partners, Jamie Cockayne and Richard Mcenery’s business, 30 South
Eyewear, recently started selling the first fully-recycled high-performance sunglasses in the world.
It’s hard to believe, when you look at them, that these stylish sunnies - which are worn by both professional athletes and
regular, outdoorsy South Africans - are made from recycled fishing nets and ocean plastic.
Although they launched the business in 2018, it has only been in the last six months that Jamie and Richard started
transitioning towards becoming a fully-recycled and sustainable enterprise.
“We are both very ocean sensitive, having spent many years working, living and playing on and around the ocean,” says
Jamie. “We’ve finally found our niche market and are excited to be transitioning our entire range to be made from reclaimed
ocean waste.”
Lifelong friends and co-founders of
30 South Eyewear, Richard and Jamie.
Both originally from England, Jamie and Richard grew up in Spain
where they became friends at the age of 13. Going their separate
ways after school (Richard joined the Royal Marines and Jamie went to
university in London and then started working in professional football),
the two mates stayed in touch and remained close over the years.
Looking to earn some extra money, Jamie decided to go and work on
yachts. “I thought I would take a year off to go sailing and save up a
bit – but I ended up spending eight years working on yachts,” he says.
Richard, in the meantime, had established a successful marine security
company.
It was while he was working in the yachting industry that Jamie met a
South African girl named Lauren. The couple were married in 2017 and
settled in Ballito. When Richard came to visit, the two of them started
toying with the idea of starting a business.
“We’d been talking about owning an online sunglasses business for a
few years. We are both very sporty, so we began researching eyewear
for active, outdoor lifestyles in South Africa. There was a distinct gap in
the market between really cheap sunglasses and the more expensive,
high-end brands. We wanted to create something that was good
quality, but still fairly priced.”
They sold their first pair of 30 South sunglasses in July 2018. “From the
beginning, we wanted to be known for our excellent service and the
fact that we offer a lifetime guarantee. We started with one shape in six
different colours and our target market was outdoorsy South Africans,
aged between 25 and about 60 years old.”
After a few years of figuring themselves out, Ballito-based Jamie
and Richard (who now lives in Spain) took their business up a notch
towards the middle of last year. They employed a few staff members
and opened a retail space at Sage Centre in Umhlali. “We found our
unique selling point and ‘niche’ by becoming a
fully-recycled brand,” says Jamie.
“We want to be as sustainable and as local as we
can be. Our frames are fully recycleable, but they
are still manufactured in China as this is the only
way we can keep within our price point at this
stage. Everything is fully-traceable in terms of our
recycling, though. It’s very important to us that we
are taking plastic out of the ocean.”
Jamie and his team source recycled materials
from a UK-based company that turns old fishing
nets and ocean plastic into pellets. They send
the pellets to their manufacturers in China. “It’s all
above board and highly audited,” he says, “and we
worked out that even with the carbon footprint
involved in transportation, it’s still better for the
environment than creating new products.”
Theirs are now the only sustainable sunglasses in
the adventure lifestyle category in the world.
So, who are these sunglasses made for, exactly?
Pretty much anyone who does anything sporty
outdoors … cycling, running, paddling … you
name it. They have a number of top SA sportsmen
(cricketers, golfers and paddlers) wearing their
range, which is currently only available online (and
at Holla Trails and House of Golf in Ballito).
As they turn their focus towards the global
market, Jamie says they are considering having a
few other stockists in South Africa. “We are very
specific about our customer experience though,
so we aren’t going to put our sunglasses just
anywhere.”
Running wild
Relatable, relaxed and locally designed, Run Wild is an exciting new South African
running apparel brand that was born right here on the North Coast.
Laid-back classic trucker caps, colourful vests, tees and comfy
running socks – the Run Wild range is created by runners for
runners. But it didn’t start out that way. In fact, it all started with a
few bumper stickers to help raise funds for charity.
Now the brand has grown and evolved into a funky, successful
and ‘quintessentially South African’ running fashion range for
Umhlanga-based husband-and-wife team, Ryan and Sheralyn Elson.
Born and bred on the North Coast, Ryan and Sheralyn are both
sporty and love trail running.
“We actually only started running a little later in life,” says Ryan.
“We both enjoyed sport at school and remained active afterwards,
playing club rugby (Sheralyn played touch rugby) while we were
studying. That came to an end when our first son was born,
though.”
After completing a Bachelor of Science degree (with honours
in microbiology), Ryan decided he didn’t want to be stuck in a
laboratory all day and is a now a medical rep. Sheralyn is a qualified
tax practitioner. The couple started running about 10 years
ago, first joining the Regent Harriers running club and then the
Riverside Trail Club in Durban North.”
Having participated in a number of local trail runs and staged trail
races, Ryan and Sheralyn love running together - both in Umhlanga
and at Holla Trails in Ballito.
“We are lucky enough to both have very supportive parents who
help us out with the kids, and our boys have pretty much grown
up in the Virginia bush,” laughs Ryan. They also train together at
Adventure Obstacle Training (AOT).
It was just before the first lockdown, Ryan says, that Run Wild was
created. “We hosted a fundraising run for the ‘I Care Charity’ with
Riverside Trail Club and I had some bumper stickers made for that.
They were a hit and I thought the design would look quite cool on
a cap. I started playing around with designs and had two batches
of caps printed, which sold quickly.”
When the first lockdown hit, like many people Ryan and Sheralyn
had a bit of free time on their hands (in between those awful
backyard runs), and they started playing around with ideas and
designs for shirts.
“Once we put the word out, we literally sold out before we even
had them made. We have had the most amazing support from our
local running community,” says Ryan.
So, what is Run Wild apparel all about?
“Basically, we noticed a gap in the market in South Africa for
affordable (but still good quality) locally-made running gear. We
only make items that we enjoy running in.”
Keeping the cost-versus-quality balance in check is very important
to Ryan, who is also passionate about supporting
local. Everything is manufactured in KZN (except the
socks, which are made in Pretoria). And everything
has been ‘test-run’ by them before being added to
the range.
“Having never been a particularly stylish or
fashionable guy, this has really been a learning
curve for me. I’ve been operating right outside of
my comfort zone,” admits Ryan. “There has been a
lot of trial-and-error and I’ve had to teach myself
about social media and marketing, but basically I like
running and having fun outdoors - and that’s what
Run Wild is all about.
“We don’t do longer and multi-day trail runs, and
we haven’t done any of the major trail races yet. We
aren’t elite runners – just people who really enjoy
time on the trails together and with our friends –
and that’s the inspiration behind Run Wild. We want
the everyday runner to relate to the brand.”
With new items being added to the range regularly
(including shorts and possibly running tights in a
few weeks’ time), Ryan says they are always looking
for new ideas and designs. And doing lots of
research.
“I ask a lot of questions and do a lot of Googling.”
Although the brand is rooted in trail running, none
of the gear is exclusively for this use. Our items can
be used for trail or road running – or pretty much
anything fun and outdoors.”
With more and more people supporting local
brands, Ryan says when they launched the brand he
couldn’t wait to see someone who he didn’t know
running in their kit. “Now I see our items all over the
place and it’s just so awesome.”
Also passionate about conservation, Ryan says Run
Wild is involved with sponsorships for various local
fundraising initiatives (including sponsoring the
upcoming inaugural Upper Highway Trail Marathon,
which is raising funds for local conservancies).
preparations and modifications that cater to many different body types and abilities.
The STOTT PILATES method focuses on functional fitness, making it applicable to
everyday life.”
Tracy also offers a variety of STOTT Pilates instructor certification programmes, all of
which include the STOTT Pilates principles. These include effective communication
and observation skills, verbal cueing and imagery, modifications for specific body
types, postural issues and conditions, theory and practice of postural assessment and
exercise layering.
“The thing I love most about Pilates is
the way you feel afterwards – strong
from within. Also, anyone can (and
should) do it, as the benefits far
outweigh those of any other form of
exercise,” she says.
Pilates and running:
Tracy says that adding STOTT Pilates to
a running programme has extraordinary
benefits. “The attention to building up
strength in the core, the ability to locate
and work on specific, weak muscles and
the focus on the connection of body
and mind all combine to significantly
increase a runner’s game. The nature of
speed and distance running (the stress
on the joints, repetitive movements
and required reserves of endurance
mean that runners can develop a host
of physical issues. STOTT Pilates offers
a chance to exercise muscles while
relieving stress on the joints and works
on alignment, balance and muscle
activation around the joints. It also
helps with integrating the whole body,
rather than only looking at the lower
kinetic chain and focuses on bringing
symmetry, making it an ideal addition to
any running programme.”
Injury-free strides
Running - one of the purest forms of human movement – forms the basis of many
sporting and athletic pursuits. It can, however, also lead to a number of injuries if not
approached correctly. Ballito physio, Lianca Dookran, shares some thoughts.
Runners, assemble!
Whether you are training for a
marathon or have just found your
niche, joining a running club can
help you attain your goals. There
are a number of different running
groups that cater for different levels
of runners, from beginners to experts.
Running clubs offer motivation and
socialisation, as well as coaching tips
to streamline technique and prevent
injury.
Fix your feet
A good starting point for preventing
injury is investing in the correct
shoes for your foot type - neutral,
pronated, supinated, flat or narrow.
The main purpose of a running shoe
is to protect the ankle (and therefore
the knee and hip joints) from impact
and stress during training sessions, by
allowing the foot to move naturally
and preventing muscle imbalances.
Due to hard impact forces, running
shoes tend to wear and tear over
time. It is recommended that runners
change their shoes after a mileage of
500km to 800km.
Mileage check
Too much, too soon can be a reason
for injury. Muscles, ligaments and
tendons are under varying degrees
of stress during a running session.
It is best, therefore, to acclimate
these structures by progressing your
running volume at a gradual rate. The
most common recommendation for
mileage increase is approximately
ten percent a week. Once you have
established a solid base mileage,
then you can start addressing
other components of your running
technique.
Cross-training
Strength training is essential for
reducing injury risk by rectifying
muscle imbalances and thereby
improving running efficacy and
performance. Focus on developing
key muscle groups that maintain
posture and correct biomechanics.
Core strengthening and exercises
that target pelvic stability are also
beneficial. People who only run
are more prone to overuse injuries,
compared to those who combine
running with other complementary
exercises.
Quality recovery
Many runners put a great deal of
thought into their running regime,
but few put the same amount of
thought into their recovery. Recovery
is giving your body the time to adapt
and recuperate from training loads.
Listen to the signs
Most running injuries don’t blindside
you, they have signals - soreness,
aches and pain. It can be tempting
to ignore these minor symptoms,
but the results of disregarding the
signs lead to time off running. It’s
important for runners to be aware
of warning signs, including: sudden
localised pain, swelling, numbness/
pins and needles and areas tender to
the touch.
Text: Leah Shone
One of the best things about
running is that you don’t need
a whole lot of expensive gear to
do the sport. You do, however,
need good quality shoes that are
(importantly) right for you.
Choosing a pair of running shoes can be
quite an overwhelming experience. Have
you taken a walk through a sport shoes store
recently? The plethora of different colours,
styles and brands are enough to confuse
even the most seasoned runner.
We asked well-known Ballito- and Umhlangabased
podiatrist Nelfrie Kemp (who also
happens to be a runner herself ), to help us
out with a few ‘do’s and don’ts’ for when it
comes to choosing the right running shoe.
“Comrades is so much more than just
running over the finish line in the designated
time and getting the medal around your
neck. It starts the day you put on your
running shoes and start training for the race.
Before you’ve even got your entry. For some,
it starts in a shoe store when the assistant
says, “these shoes are good enough for
Comrades’.”
Nelfrie says in her opinion shoes play the
primary role in your running mission. You
need the shoes before you can start any
programme.
“We live in an era where the market is
flooded with running shoes choices. The
running shoe companies are continually
researching, developing and changing
existing shoes to improve functionality to
enhance running efficiency.”
It’s for this reason, Nelfrie says, that you
should try on at least three brands when
you are on the hunt for new shoes – and
then you can make an informed decision as
to whether you are going to stick with the
same brand and type of shoe as before.
What not to do!
• Don’t base your choice on the colour and aesthetics of the shoe to match
your running outfit.
• Don’t base your choice purely on what works for your friend.
• The latest and greatest technology might not work for your style of
running.
• Don’t panic-buy a week before your race.
• Don’t get caught buying a shoe because it’s on sale and ‘such a bargain’.
• Lastly, just because Eliud Kipchoge won his Olympic marathon in ‘that’
shoe. does not mean it will work for you. Remember he trained for years for
that achievement!
Important points to remember:
• Your shoe choice will be determined by your frame, pace, running style
and foot mechanics.
• Always try on both shoes in the shop with the socks you usually use and
walk and run around in the shop.
• The shoe should encourage your foot to move forward, pushing through
your big toe joint, not cause your foot to collapse into the cushioning or
change your foot’s mechanics.
• Always buy one size bigger than your normal shoe size. Different shoes
have different cuts and sizing.
• Tie your laces every time you put your shoe on, as your foot and shoe
should function as a unit. If the laces are not tied securely your foot will
move around inside the shoe and alter your mechanics.
• Listen to your feet, they’ll tell you when you need new shoes. Running
shoes last on average 600 to 1 000km, but it depends on the individual’s
feet.
• It’s not advisable to patch the outer soles of your shoes, for the same
reason you won’t retread your car’s tyres. The midsole of your shoe will
wear out before the rest of the shoe.
• The wear pattern on your outer sole and upper side of the shoe tell a
story of your mechanics and not the quality of the shoe.
• There is a brand and version of shoe for every foot.
The food a Mundo Vida is full of flavour
and beautifully presented
The Bush Tavern is one of Umdloti’s most
loved gems! Great vibe, awesome food and
the place to be on match day!
We loved the variety of options
on the kids’ menu at Caff’e Java,
like this fun ‘Egg in a Hole’!
Boasting some of the top restaurants on the
North Coast, most of which are located directly
in front of the ocean, exquisite holiday homes
to rent and loads of beach fun to be had,
Umdloti is the ideal destination for a quick
‘staycation’, just 10 minutes up the road!
Whether you’re looking for a spot to have a
date night or a family brunch, or are hoping
to book a quick getaway (girls’ weekend or a
sneaky couple’s escape?), the village of Umdloti
has so many options available - all of which are
truly top-notch.
Our whirlwind visit to Umdloti started with
lunch on the deck of the stunning Mundo Vida
contemporary seafood restaurant, where our
host and owner Joni Wilkinson welcomed us
with a glass of white wine while we browsed
the menu.
Although predominantly a seafood restaurant
(delicious langoustines, prawns and sushi!),
there is also a wide variety of non-seafood and
vegetarian options available.
After deliberating, we finally settled on
sushi starters (so flavourful and beautifully
presented), followed by King Prawns served
with basmati rice and the most delicious
Almond Crusted Norwegian Salmon.
Everything was cooked to perfection and
served with very friendly smiles from the staff!
We didn’t have space for dessert, but were
tempted by the Chocolate and Nut Slice and
the Vanilla & Caramel Swirl Ice Cream (drizzled
with chocolate liqueur!) … so perhaps next
time!
After the decadent lunch, we made our way
up to Bellamont Road, where we were treated
to some pampering by the team at Hayahay
Beauty Spa.
Tucked away alongside a little forest-like
garden, the spa is owned by Cecilia Davies
(who is originally from the Philippines) and
offers a range of treatments in a tranquil, quiet
setting.
We were welcomed with a bottle of bubbly
(imperative for any spa spoil, we think), and
then shown to the treatment room where we
enjoyed an express facial and relaxing back and
neck massage. We left floating on air and ready
to check into our accommodation for the night.
On arrival at Copper Beach (a self-catering
cottage located literally on the beach), we were
greeted and shown around by our host, Myrna,
who lives in the main house on the property
with her husband Hugh.
Stylishly finished with three luxury en-suite
bedrooms (each with its own veranda), Copper
Beach comfortably sleeps six people and
features an open-plan kitchen, dining and living
room area. It has its own beach access and is
close to all of the restaurants and shops.
Our dinner spot for the night was the well-
known SandBar. Definitely one of Umdloti’s best kept
secrets (should be on your ‘to do’ list if you haven’t been yet).
SandBar has a wide range of seafood main courses and some
of the best-sounding burgers we’ve heard of (ahem, Crispy
Southern Chicken Burger...). They also do fantastic pastas,
chicken, curries, meat dishes and salads.
We decided to eat ‘tapas style’ and enjoyed a variety of
smaller dishes, ranging from the Pot Sticker Dumplings to
Camembert Spring Rolls and a Greek Mezze Platter, and
everything was absolutely delicious! The cocktail menu is
as exciting as the food, and this is the perfect spot to enjoy
a Sexy Umdloti Beach or Endless Summer Mojito while
watching the sun go down. We will be back (for a burger,
probably!).
After a really comfortable night’s sleep (and an early-morning
wake up to watch the sunrise on the beach with a cup of
coffee), we headed off for breakfast at Caff’e Java. Owner
Tanya greeted us and told us a little about this well-known
café and restaurant which serves a wide range of breakfasts
(all day), as well as a comprehensive lunch menu. Perfectly
positioned (on the beach, again) Caff’e Java is ideal for a
quick snack, business coffee or big, family brunch.
We tried the Corny Breakfast (mini jalapeno & corn loaf with
crispy bacon, egg, corn salsa, basic pesto and crème fraiche)
and the Naughty Yoghurt & Muesli bowl (with Greek yoghurt,
chocolate muesli, cookie, berry coulis and blueberries), both
of which were outstanding. Of course, after seeing the cakes
on display, we had to sneak some takeaways for the family!
Our very last stop (full disclosure: we returned a few days
later because tummies were completely overloaded), was to
the remarkable and renowned Bel Punto restaurant.
You can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped into the
Mediterranean when you arrive at this stylish spot
overlooking the ocean. Owned by Italian restaurateurs
Emanuel and Vanessa Cantatore (who are always around for
a chat), Bel Punto serves up arguably the best Italian food
with the most impeccable service on the KZN North Coast.
Everything – from antipastos and light snacks to hearty
For a pampering spoil, we
highly reccommend a visit
to Hayahay Beauty Spa
Copper Beach Cottage, situated on
the beach, sleeps six people and
has a stylish contemporary interior
Renowned Italian restaurant Bel Punto offers
impeccable cuisine in a magnificent setting
pastas or exquisite seafood, meat and poultry - is carefully
and thoughtfully prepared using age-old family recipes.
We enjoyed (devoured) a beautiful langoustine special
starter each, followed by their famous (and we could
taste why) Gamberi alla Padella (butterflied queen prawns
served in the most delicious garlic, white wine, tomato,
cream and chili sauce). This is a bucket list stop for anyone
who appreciates truly good food!
There is still so much to see and so many more wonderful
places to visit in Umdloti (from pizza places to top coffee
shops and more), that it’s simply impossible to write about
them all! Do yourself a favour though, and jump into the
car and head up (or down) the road to the little town of
Umdloti and do some exploring of your own … you will
not be disappointed!
