The summer is probably the best time to gobeach exploring, looking in rockpools is not as much fun in the colder weather!If you decide to go rock-pooling when you go to the beach, take a bucketand maybe a small net. A clear plastic jar makes a good viewer, if you putthe bottom of it in the pool and look down through you will have a muchclearer view of what is happening under water. Each pool will have its ownmixture of inhabitants, depending on its size, how warm the water gets inthe sun and how long the water is left between tides.The best way to rock-pool is to watch the pool you have chosen very quietlyand wait to see what moves. If there is seaweed, lots of small creatures willkeep safe in between the seaweed fronds. Sea snails, little crabs and lotsof insects will get in the fronds to keep away from predators and keep damp.Small fish and shrimps will swim around in the open water, they are oftenvery well camouflaged, so they are very hard to see from above. Larger fishand crabs can bury themselves in the sand or hide in cracks in the rocks.Rock-pools are actually quite dangerous places for sea creatures- they canbecome very warm or the water level might get too low so the creaturescould dry out. Sea-anemones pull in their tentacles and look like jelly blobswhen the tide is out so that they don’t dry out and die. Shellfish like limpetsand mussels cling on very tightly to the rocks so that they don’t dry out.When the tide covers the rock pool again, they will all open and move aroundin the water to feed.The best way to rock-pool is to look and not disturb the creatures at all, butif you want to look at something closely, catch it carefully and put it inseawater in your bucket- take a photo, draw it, try to identify it –then let itgo, very carefully back in the pool you found it. Please don’t take them homeor leave them in the bucket for hours or throw them in the sea. It really isimportant to put them back where you found them.Happy beach exploring!
