Greetings!
I am pleased to have you join us as we celebrate NAREB’s 75 th Anniversary during our
Annual Convention in Tampa – the city where it all began! This is a milestone event, and
as your President, I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am!
I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made since 1947. We have been relentless in our
effort to address the inequities that have plagued our nation’s housing and lending sectors for years – especially
those affecting the Black population. While there is still much to be done, we should take tremendous pride in
the role we have played – and continue to play – in moving our nation closer to housing equity for all.
The work that our NAREB Chapters have done on a local level has been nothing less than spectacular. Whether
you are a member of one of our 90 chapters or a treasured affiliate, you are the ‘change agents’ who consistently
advocate for the voiceless.
We still have a long way to go, and the crisis of housing affordability remains an urgent challenge for
communities across the country. Because of our united effort, NAREB is being heard, and our focus on
promoting our ‘Democracy in Housing’ agenda legislatively, remains intact. We must never forget the special
magic that lies behind our 75 years of successfully creating housing opportunities for those who have been
traditionally excluded from the market. It is the amazing bond among all of us who understand that
homeownership is a major component to building wealth, which is more than money, but peace of mind that
comes with intergenerational stability.
I certainly hope NAREB's 2022 Annual Convention will live up to your expectations. The training sessions,
speaker spotlights, breakout sessions, networking opportunities, leisure activities and social events all add up
to memorable experiences that will celebrate the work that you’ve done and recharge you for the challenges
that lie ahead. Let us never relinquish our commitment to "REBUILD, RESTORE, and RETAIN" that which has
sustained us for 75 years.
Thank you to the Bay Area Association of Realtists and Local President Travis Brooks for sharing your city with
us. Appreciation is also extended to our NAREB Annual Convention Committee and the 75 th Anniversary
Honorary Chairs for the dedication and hard work to ensure the success of our events.
For our new members and first attendees, please take advantage of the agenda workshops and events. May
your experience at this landmark convention create valuable opportunities for you and the communities you
serve.
Thank you to everyone attending NAREB's 75 th Anniversary in Tampa, Florida. Let the celebration begin!
History
After World War II, the nation found itself facing a mood
of deep-seated social segregation it could no longer tolerate
or afford. Yet the South, confidently proclaimed itself to be the
new plus ultra (uppermost limits) of Southern tolerance. Thus, was
born the Civil Rights movement- a period of the most difficult but
necessary struggle to topple the crumbling walls segregation had
erected between Americans who had fought- and died together.
The postwar years indeed gave African Americans inspiration, confidence,
strength and hope for a better America. The United Nations had been formed,
and Ralph J. Bunche had become the United Nations Division Trustee. African
Americans were gaining better paying jobs, and the Supreme Court had finally passed a ruling that
restrictive covenants and private agreement to exclude persons of designated race from the
ownership of real property were not enforceable under the law.
Although the lives of African Americans were now changing for the good, and a few victories had
been won, schools were still segregated under the “separate but equal” theory- and equal housing
had yet to become a reality. This is what drove the men and women who met in Tampa, Florida, on the
sweltering night of July 29, 1947, to form the National Association of Real Estate Brokers- NAREB.
These twelve pioneers, one woman and eleven men hailing from seven states across the country are
NAREB’s recognized founders.
Nannie Black, Detroit, MI
Macco Crutcher, Detroit, MI
Carleton Gains, Detroit, MI
W. D. Morrison, Jr., Detroit MI
O. B. Cobbins, Jackson, MS W. H. Hollins, Birmingham, AL
George W. Powell, Jacksonville, FL J. R. Taylor, Miami, FL
F. Henry Williams, Jacksonville, FL Horace Sudduth, Cincinnati, OH
J. W. Sanford, Oklahoma City, OK A. Maceo Smith, Dallas, TX
On this night, these people dedicated themselves to fair housing for all. They began by electing
temporary officers as follows:
W. D. Morrison, President
Horace Sudduth, Vice President
W. H. Hollins, Treasurer
national association of
real estate brokers
Word soon spread, and NAREB's first convention was held at the Convention Hall
in Atlantic City, NJ, on July 19-20, 1948. It was a resounding success-a moment of
synergy when men and women across the country were able to come together to
voice their opinions as one- and to take a stand against inequity and injustice.
Since then, NAREB and its REALTISTS® have gone on to win victory after victory in
support of equal housing opportunities for all. We are an association proud of our past,
relentless in our struggle, and 100% dedicated to the REALTIST® creed-
Democracy in Housing.
Hello Realtist and Future Realtist,
As the Chairman of the Board for the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Inc. welcome to
(NAREB) 2022 Annual Convention. Congratulations on the beginning of 75 years of fighting for Black
Families and helping to create Generational Wealth across the country.
Being the Chairman of the Board, I want to personally say thank you for attending the convention
now and all future Conventions to come. NAREB has been constantly fighting for Democracy in
Housing. The fight started years ago for ‘Democracy in Housing’, and it was before many of us were born. This organization
is the support for the outspoken and the voice for the unspoken. NAREB for years has been the catalyst on policies initiatives
and legislation matters and now that we have you as a Member, Partner, Board Member. We have the power needed to
bring about the change for many Black Families across the country.
We are extremely excited that you have chosen to lock arms with such a prestigious organization like NAREB. I would like
to think that by being a part of our organization, you will have a better chance of winning the fight for democracy in housing
by having us as your trusted partner. It is like having a left and right Jab in a fight for equality in all aspects of housing for
support of Black Families but being inclusive to helping all families.
By having you as an advocate with us, we can get down to the business of what we do best. Opening doors for
opportunities that otherwise you would not be privy too. The Barriers within racial systems created with legislative and
yet antiquated policies against Black families as well as Black Real Estate Professionals (REALTISTS). These laws are still
existing today, and the wealth gap continues to widen as we speak today.
We need your continued support, your ability, your tenacity, and commitment to make sure that we leave no stones
unturned. This is not an easy task when we know that we are constantly fighting battles for the underserved communities
against systems purposely creating gaps in inequality in all categories, especially in the Black Communities. I hope by now
you have heard the expression “Build it and they shall come.” Well, the NAREB is willing to lay the foundation and we need
your continued support to help building it up. We just cannot do it without your continued support.
I have always believed that getting in a “good’ fight” is easy because you are not only fighting for the underserved individual,
but you are fighting for the underserved neighborhoods, you are fighting the systemic racial barriers that are still in place
for the separation of wealth, food desert communities, education as well as home ownership. But what you are truly
fighting for is justice and equality for our Black Families and all people. And by doing all these things you make it a better
community and help to close the wealth gap of inequality and opportunity one family at a time.
I am profoundly grateful for your strong willingness to be a part of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Inc. that
has the mission and the vision to achieve our goal.
Welcome to a “Good Fight”, and your task is to Restore Stability, Rebuild Communities, and Retain the Legacy.
Enjoy NAREB’s 75 th Anniversary,
Hello REALTISTS!
Are you ready to take part in one of our most exciting NAREB Annual
Conventions ever? As your Executive Director, I can hardly wait!
On August 3, we’ll be coming together from all over the Country to
connect, listen, learn, enjoy each other’s company, and – most
importantly – renew our unflagging commitment to our ‘Democracy in
Housing’ agenda.
As you know, this year’s Annual Convention is especially significant
because we will be commemorating NAREB’s 75 th Anniversary! When the National Association
of Real Estate Brokers was launched in 1947, we had no idea that, 75 years later, there would still
be lingering inequities troubling our nation’s housing and lending sectors – even though
homeownership is one of the greatest pathways to intergenerational wealth and stability for
individuals, families and communities.
While we have come far, we must continue to promote and implement fair housing, equal
opportunity, and community development legislation at the local, state, and federal levels. Most of
all, we must make certain that communities of color are treated with dignity and respect.
This is why it’s so important that we all take time to commemorate our 75-year history and take
pride in our ourselves as REALTISTS – professionals who practice the highest standards of
professional integrity as we push even harder to move our nation closer to housing equity for all.
I am so honored and humbled to be your Executive Director, and I can hardly wait to connect with
you and the rest of our ‘change makers’ in person. You have worked so hard, and I would like to
take this moment to say, ‘thank you’ from the bottom of my heart!!
With warm regards,
C. Renee Wilson
Executive Director
made of some of earth's hardest and toughest materials, and resists corrosion. NAREB is also
beautiful, of high value, authenticity and clarity, and refracts light with its brilliance. The
