INDUSTRYNEWS
Industry insight
What are the
driving regulations
across Europe?
For fleet operators managing vehicles travelling cross-border between the
UK and Europe, understanding the different road legislations and safety
specifications can be confusing.
Here, Emily Hardy, Marketing Manager and Road Safety Expert at
Brigade Electronics UK, discusses the variety of regulations along with
Brigade’s easy reference infographic outlining the rules and equipment
requirements across countries.
Road safety has come a long way in the last 50 years and
global efforts have meant our roads are now safer than
ever before.
The number of people losing their lives on Europe’s roads has
fallen over the last 10 years by 37% on average. However, this
figure falls short of the EU’s target of 50% and, sadly, deaths and
injuries from road collisions remain high in all countries across
Europe.
Efforts to improve road safety have resulted in a raft of varying
road regulations, rules and specifications for different types of
vehicles. Road regulations are reviewed and put in place by a
country’s relevant governing body, so inevitably rules differ from
nation to nation. The cross over between left-hand lane driving
to right-hand lane driving between the UK and Europe further
complicates matters. This can often make it challenging for those
operating fleets that travel across multiple borders.
Figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) reported that
99% of goods transported by UK registered HGVs in 2020 were to
or from the EU15* and that 18% of these journeys were between
the UK and France.
The UK’s Direct Vision Standard
In October 2020, the Direct Vision Standard was introduced in
the UK. The first legislation of its kind in Europe, it specifies that
all goods vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes require a permit
to drive into Greater London, including vehicles from outside the
UK.
To qualify for a permit, vehicles are issued with a star rating
and those rated 0-1 star (0-3 stars from 2024) will need to be
equipped with the DVS Safe System. These include side cameras,
ultrasonic sensors for the nearside of the vehicle and a warning
alarm, which is activated when the vehicle is turning. However,
for vehicles from outside the UK, this can cause difficulties
due to the nuances of legalities for commercial vehicle safety
technology in their own country. For example, in Germany fitting
alarms with speaking voices is not permitted and operators
could face hefty fines if they are found in breach of the rules.
Therefore, if you are a UK operator fitting the Safe System to
your fleet and your vehicles regularly travel to Germany, then you
should not fit a warning alarm that includes a spoken voice alert
feature. Recommended alternatives are White Sound® reversing
alarms, such as Brigade’s bbs-tek® White Sound Reversing Alarm
and the bbs-TI Turn Indicator Warning Alarm.
Recent updates to the Highway Code in the UK are also having
an impact on HGVs with the introduction of the Highway Code
Hierarchy. As a result of these changes, lorry drivers are now
ranked as having the greatest responsibility towards other road
users and are more likely to burden the blame in the event of an
incident. This is making vehicle safety technology in the UK more
important than ever with many operators opting to fit vehicles
with the DVS recommendations as a result.
Germany’s Abbiegeassistent
From July 2022, all long trucks in Germany that weigh up
to 44 tonnes and are 25,25 metres in length must abide by
Abbiegeassistent. Alongside this, the regulations recommend (but
6 THE GARAGE
6, 7 Industry Insight Emily Hardy.indd 1 28/07/2022 14:47

INDUSTRYNEWS
don’t require) that trucks weighing over 7.5
tonnes are fitted with a side camera and a
side sensor warning system to alert drivers
to objects and people in the nearside blind
spot – this is especially important when the
vehicle is turning right.
Germany’s Abbiegeassistent rules also
apply in Vienna, Austria.
France’s Road Safety Legislation
From January 2021, new safety regulations
were introduced in France requiring all
vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes,
whether they are used for goods or
passenger transport, to display blind spot
stickers. These stickers, known as ‘angles
morts’, must be clearly and appropriately
displayed on both the sides and the rear
informing others of the vehicle’s blind spots.
HGVs operating in France without the
appropriate stickers will risk a penalty fine
of up to €750.
Additionally, motor vehicles should be
constructed or fitted with one or more
indirect vision safety systems, such as
mirrors, with a field view that does not
include a blind spot likely to obscure a
vehicle about to pass it. Controls for such
devices should also be easily accessible to
the driver while the vehicle is in motion.
As part of these rules, it is recommended
that operators fit vehicles with the UK’s DVS
Safe System. Brigade’s DVS Safe System Kits
are available in two different types – one
for rigid vehicles and one for articulated
vehicles. Both kits are compliant with DVS
as well as all relevant regional laws across
the EU, meaning fleet operators can be
confident that the systems will meet all
necessary requirements.
To simplify these rules and regulations,
Brigade has produced a handy infographic
providing a country-by-country summary
of the most appropriate and suitable safety
devices for vehicles travelling cross-border.
NEWS
When Co-operation
Transcends Competition
The retail motor industry has
competition in its psyche, but
in the midst of our current dire
situation, is there not a good argument
for collaboration? Co-operation can only
help attract new talent into our industry,
preparing us for a brighter and more
positive future.
Long-term planning for apprentices
does not seem to have been a priority,
and unfortunately, look at the position
that the industry is in now in terms of staff
shortages.
Many managers we have spoken to,
express concern with regards to the lack
of qualified and skilled staff, but in the past
have done very little about it.
Employers have told us for years how
difficult it is to find good apprentices,
and we are aware that careers guidance
in schools is often well short of adequate.
Unfortunately, for many years now, schools
appear to have guided their learners into
further education. If any work is done in
schools, it is mostly carried out by colleges
and independent training providers.
Students should be given the
opportunity to discover other career
options across all industries. However,
there is currently no national careers
service that is independent of schools to
deliver this.
Our industry does not shout loudly
enough about the exciting career
opportunities that we have on offer. It is
time to wake up and realise that we as
an industry, need to promote ourselves,
because clearly no one else is going to.
The industry has a reputation of: “Work
is busy, we don’t have time to train an
apprentice”, and “Business is quiet, we
don’t need an apprentice”. We need to
break this cycle.
Individual dealers who have invested
in apprentices in the past, have raised
concerns that they leave once they are
‘out of their time’. However, recruiting
and training an apprentice is one thing,
retaining them is something quite
different.
The cost of one company pulling a
professional promotion together, in order
to attract applications for apprentice
opportunities, would not be deemed
cost effective. However, if for once, the
industry all co-operated and contributed
to producing a highly professional video
and social media campaign, the overall
cost per business would be very sensible.
Even though recruiting apprentices
today will not solve the current skills
gap, we need to address this urgently. As
the workforce ages, we must consider
succession planning, especially considering
the number of years it takes Apprentice
Vehicle Technicians, MET Technicians and
Panel Beaters to become fully skilled.
Once we have young people applying to
join our industry, then we can go back to
competing for them. Result, more quality
apprentices and better able to secure the
future of your workforce.
NEWS
Disrupting the
Automotive
Aftermarket is
what’s driving SMIC
Autoparts’ arrival
on the UK scene
Reinventing the parts supply process and introducing the
“Parivaar” way of working in the UK are just two of the aims of
SMIC Autoparts, the new automotive aftermarket start-up.
SMIC Autoparts’ vision is to become the world’s number one
auto parts brand.
And SMIC Autoparts aims to do this with a best-value approach
and a relentless focus on Integrity, Safety & Quality - its core
values to help its customers “Ride in Confidence”.
Born from established manufacturing and distribution giant,
Sona Mandhira Private Limited which has held a stronghold in
India and the SAARC region for more than a decade, through SMIC
Autoparts it can continue the global expansion from its London HQ
in Knightsbridge. SMIC Autoparts will also leverage an established
distribution network in the Middle East, Europe, North & South
America and the African continent via its sister offices in the UAE
and India (with the US to follow in 2022).
Announcing the start-up, the Founder of SMIC Autoparts and
CMD of Sona Mandhira, Ms Mandhira Kapur believes an innovationfirst
approach is crucial in an industry that needs shaking up and
future-proofing. She said: “I believe in daring to be different so I’ve
moved our global headquarters to London because I believe the
UK’s automotive aftermarket industry is an exciting place to be and
a natural gateway to our European and North American expansion.
We’ve also opened a sister office in Dubai to amplify our MENA
links. We’re bringing a start-up, entrepreneurial approach to
launching our new product line here and eventually helping resolve
the availability crisis deeply affecting the industry.”
The Sona Mandhira brand is renowned for reliable and durable
aftermarket products and SMIC Autoparts is backed by Sona
Mandhira’s strong team of R&D experts that have helped them in
creating world-class products for over 10 years.
Ms Kapur explained how in creating the brand SMIC Autoparts,
she retained the values of Sona Mandhira and wanted to bring the
idea of Sona Mandhira Parivaar (which means family in Hindi) over
Entrepreneur owner, Ms Mandhira Kapur, outlines
the start-up’s vision to become the world’s leading
auto-parts brand.
Born from Sona Mandhira Private Limited which has
held a stronghold in India and the SAARC region for
more than a decade, via SMIC Autoparts Ms Kapur
is taking a traditional manufacturing and distribution
family business and transforming it into a dynamic,
digital-first multinational company.
The start-up aims to reinvent the parts supply process
by delivering its brand’s promise to provide customers
with OE quality spare parts at an affordable price
as well as assisting the independent aftermarket in
digitalisation.
to the UK. She added: “In Indian culture, it’s all about relationships.
I genuinely care about our suppliers who are also our salespeople
and that permeates throughout the company. We believe in
working together to ensure all parties enjoy future growth. We
want to be successful and we want to help you to be successful.
We genuinely feel like a family, and in an often impersonal world,
we want to make it more personal and grow that community ethos
here.”
Ms Kapur revealed that their sales team was “ready to hit the
road” and urged anyone looking to shake up their supply chain to
get in contact directly. She added: “We can’t wait to be out talking
to the industry about our new product lines and expect to see our
distinctive Lion logo in garages up and down the country in the
very near future.”
NEWS
Parts in
Motion
are moving
forward
at a pace
Today the Garage talks to Parts in Motion who,
even during difficult recent trading conditions,
have not stopped progressing and are now well
established as one of the largest suppliers to the
automotive market.
You are really making an impression in the UK parts
supply market, talk us through your business.
“PartsinMotion.co.uk started in 2013 with a background in the
automotive aftermarket. There was a real vision on how the
business might look in the future and how we could champion best
practice in parts distribution.
“In the past two decades, motor factors have evolved and
with it their focus on customer service, led in some ways by the
progression into retail. Helped along by numerous automotive
suppliers, motor factors have entered the world of retail and
seen the benefits of selling to both trade and consumer in a retail
environment.
“The move to online has been long in the making for the
automotive aftermarket. Every garage should have an online motor
factor in their supplier portfolio. We’ve built up relationships with
customers, have a responsible pricing structure and offer superb
value to both suppliers and customers – we’re an active member
of the automotive aftermarket community.”
You recently made two very important calls, garages have to
put quality first and also you called for greater sustainability,
tell us why these were vital.
“We’ve seen a shift from customers towards well-known quality
brands following the pandemic. This is continuing as garages are
more focused than ever before on their profitability and are more
aware of the pitfalls in fitting low quality parts. Demand for quality
braking, clutch, steering and suspension along with filtration
and exhausts is currently high, with garages benefiting from our
extensive availability of familiar brands – such as BM Cats, Bosch,
Blue Print, Borg & Beck, Febi, Gates, KYB, NAPA and Schaeffler
– and customer support. Products are dispatched on next day
delivery service, something that garages have become more
accustomed to since the coronavirus pandemic.
“In terms of sustainability, we have to continually look to lead
as a sector. The automotive aftermarket is a leader in service and
logistics – as the vehicle parc increases in age and size, we need
to ensure we maximise the opportunity of being more sustainable
as a sector. From the smallest to the very largest of contributions,
we are working closely with suppliers and our logistics partners
to ensure the most environmentally efficient practices are being
embraced.
The industry is going through a massive change,
how quickly do you see this revolution happening?
“The industry is going to have to cope with the most diverse
vehicle parc ever, with the rise in electrical vehicles. Against a
backdrop of global supply chain issues, recruitment challenges
and proposed legislation changes , garages are ultimately going to
have to invest to secure their future. It’s important that garages
are aware that businesses like ours are set-up to respond to their
investment, driving through key efficiencies to ensure garages
remain profitable.
What does the next 12 months look like at Parts in Motion?
“Due to our expertise and experience in the market, we offer
garages an unrivalled availability of quality brands and products.
Add to this an increasing hunger from garages for more
information, both technical and business related, we plan to
expand our support to ensure PartsinMotion.co.uk positively
touches all areas of a vibrant garage.
“Online is not going away, so the automotive aftermarket must
make the most of the opportunities it provides.”
Motul partners with Shelsley Walsh
and gears up for BRM celebration
● Legendary Speed Hill Climb venue makes Motul its official lubricant partner
● Motul looks forward to engaging with Hill Climb competitors and enthusiasts
● Classic Nostalgia event featured Motul-supported BRM celebration
Motul is delighted to announce a new
partnership agreement with the world’s
oldest permanent motorsport venue,
Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, which sees Motul
confirmed as the Official Lubricant of the
Worcestershire track.
The collaboration was showcased to
full advantage at the Midland Automobile
Club’s Classic Nostalgia Meeting, over the
weekend of July 16/17, where one of the
main features was the celebration marking
the 60th Anniversary of BRM’s F1 World
Championship win, for which Motul is proud
to be a presenting partner.
“Motul is extremely active in motorsport
of every type and we are delighted to
have become partners with the Midland
Automobile Club and its Shelsley Walsh Hill
Climb - a venue which embodies the past
present and future of Speed events in the
UK,” enthuses Motul UK’s Andy Wait. “Motul
is looking forward to engaging with the Hill
Climb community and we believe we have
the solution to all of their lubricants and
fluid needs, whether they are driving the
current crop of Hill Climb single seaters, or
the vintage and classic race cars that also
regularly compete on the hills.”
Motul will have a high visibility at Shelsley
Walsh, with branding at various points along
the 1000-yard course, which is the home
of the Midland Automobile Club (MAC).
Those coming to the Classic Nostalgia event
will also find Motul very much in evidence
around the BRM Celebration and other
areas of Shelsley Walsh, as MAC Director
Campbell Deas elaborates.
“Classic Nostalgia will be one of three
flagship events at which BRM celebrates
the 60th anniversary of its 1962 Formula
One World Championship success – the
first time that a British driver had won the
World Championship in an all-British car.
With team founder Raymond Mays having
enjoyed so much success at Shelsley Walsh,
it’s only fitting that more than 20 historic
BRMs will be there, including the fabulous
P15 continuation car with its V16 engine,
for which Motul has been lubricant partner
since the outset of the project.
“The car will be on display very close
to our Courtyard bar, which now looks
absolutely fantastic with the bar counter
supported by Motul Oil Drums - old and
current. Motul products will be available to
competitors and spectators at the venue at
most meetings. We look forward very much
to partners who are, like us, extremely
enthusiastic about creating the best
possible motorsport experience.”
The Motul-presented BRM 60 Celebration
will feature some 20 key cars and figures
from the marque’s history. These include
Graham Hill’s BRM P48, the front-engined
P25 F1 car and the Motul-sponsored P201 F1
car from 1974. Many of these will parade up
the hill, during the event - driven in some
cases by some of the former BRM drivers
who will be in attendance: well-known
and much-loved figures such as Richard
Attwood, Howden Ganley and Mike Wilds.
Classic Nostalgia featured a gathering
of group B Rally Cars, a Tribute to saloon
legend Gerry Marshall and a host of
other attractions including a Concours
d’Elegance, Live Music, Wall of Death and
Car Club displays.
Under the Spotlight
What is the future of this industry?
This month the Garage magazine talks exclusively to the Chief Executive of the IAAF, Mark Field.
Mark has just celebrated 12 months at the helm and here he reflects on the past year, looks at
the successes, future potential challenges and also how he copes with all his roles within the
Automotive industry.
A year into the role of Chief Executive of the IAAF,
what’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
Every business in the automotive aftermarket, whether
it be a garage, motor factor or supplier is dictated to by
legislation. The IAAF is fighting to uphold and strengthen the
rights and freedoms current legislation offers the sector and
so one of our biggest areas of focus has been to work more
closely with UK government departments, namely CMA, DVSA
and Department for Transport, following the UK withdrawal
from the European Union.
The issues facing aftermarket sectors around Europe are
the same and so it’s important we work together to support
the sector and member businesses.
Also, in my first year as IAAF Chief Executive, I have looked
deeper into the workings of the federation and sought to
see where, above all, we can offer members the very best
experience from their support.
Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations (MVBER) remain
much alive, and the Federation is working actively with UK
authorities to ensure the freedoms we have enjoyed as a
trade not only remain but are strengthened in line with a
technologically advanced and diverse vehicle parc of the
future. As an industry, investment in these new areas will be key.
You are one of the busiest people in the industry, how
do you still enjoy every minute?
I have an understanding family! In all seriousness, I’ve been
incredibly fortunate over the past 23 years in the industry.
I’ve been surrounded by good people and mentors and
believe the automotive aftermarket is one of the best
sectors there is, filled with entrepreneurial spirit, great
people and businesses, and unrivalled levels of customer
service. I’ve enjoyed visiting aftermarket businesses
throughout my career – everyone has a different, often
fascinating, story to tell.
What is the future of this industry? Why do we keep
getting highlighted and seemingly victimised?
We have to remember that as a sector we are a significant
contributor to the UK economy. We have to behave more
like a sector that employs around 350,000 skilled workers,
in about 35,000 (mainly) small businesses. This is about
70,000 more people than those employed in all vehicle and
engine manufacturing and their supporting supply chains. We
should also expect the spotlight to be on our trade and be
prepared to meet it accordingly. For example, regarding the
debate around the MOT Frequency, if it goes to consultation,
it will be the fourth time in roughly 12 years it has come up
and each time the sector has been united in its approach to
maintaining the current test frequency to ensure the highest
standards of road, vehicle and motorists safety.
UNDERTHESPOTLIGHT
“We have to behave more like a sector that employs around
350,000 skilled workers, in about 35,000 (mainly) small businesses”
IAAF’s next chapter will also look to play a more active role
in the support of businesses and recruitment of people, all
people, to the automotive industry. We should not continue
to beat ourselves up over the lack of new talent coming into
the trade, but instead look at what we can control and how
we can be the best version of ourselves, in order to attract
the best talent.
We recently witnessed at the UK Garage and Bodyshop
event, what a closely knit community we are, how
impressed were you?
The industry was crying out for an event that brought
everyone together and the UK Garage and Bodyshop Event
delivered, particularly meeting the industry’s thirst for
training and technology. It was also good to see exhibitors
set up to engage more with visitors. The event showed
the vibrancy of our trade, and we look forward now to
Automechanika Birmingham in 2023.
What is the biggest challenge the IAAF face moving
forward?
I believe, from the external pressures of Brexit, coronavirus
pandemic and global supply chain issues, to the internal
issues of skills and recruitment, market changes and through
the absolute need to ensure the independent aftermarket
has the right to service, repair and mot the modern motor
vehicle, IAAF stands at the very beginning of its next chapter.
We’re set up to rapidly expand our garage membership,
as we engage more with workshops on how we can best
support their businesses in light of the challenges they
constantly face around access to repair and maintenance
information.
Finally, as a federation, we have in my opinion a duty of
care to aftermarket people. The pressures of modern life are
all too real and we should support members in their ongoing
work around wellbeing and be more agile in our fundraising
activities.
J Day Engineering signs up
as first SmartWater Authorised
Registration Centre
Police-supported national scheme
helps prevent, deter and detect
catalytic converter theft.
The SmartWater Group is pleased to announce J Day
Engineering is helping to put the brakes on rising rates
of catalytic converter theft, having signed up as the first
Authorised Registration Centre for its new National Asset Database.
James Day, Director of J Day Engineering, comments: “As a
community-focused garage we are very keen to be part of the
solution to rising catalytic converter thefts in Henstridge and the
surrounding areas. We’re proud to be working with SmartWater to
help the police and bring added peace of mind to our customers.”
The SmartWater Group’s police-supported national vehicle
security campaign involves marking catalytic converters with a
unique and near impossible to remove forensic liquid that has been
proven to deter thieves and help police identify stolen property.
Garages, service stations and MOT Testing Stations are encouraged
to come on board to help roll the initiative out nationwide as
quickly as possible.
Alongside many other areas of the country, Somerset and Avon
has suffered a consistent rise in catalytic converter theft since
February this year. It is a crime that causes significant distress
as it leaves drivers with an unroadworthy vehicle and an average
replacement bill of £1,300. With some vehicles even having to
be written-off. To tackle this J Day Engineering has committed
to applying the SmartWater solution and registering customers’
vehicles on the national asset database, either for a small fee or
free-of-charge with any vehicle service*.
James Day, adds, “SmartWater is a highly proven deterrent
to criminals as it makes stolen parts too hot to handle. We look
forward to rolling out this technology, reducing theft and playing
our part to in creating a better and safer community for all.”
Gary Higgins, Chief Operations Officer at SmartWater Group
added, “We are delighted to welcome J Day Engineering on board
as our first aftermarket Registration Centre. Their enthusiasm to
come on board is testament to their dedication to vehicle safety.
We look forward to working with them and with other aftermarket
service providers who want to join us on our mission to eradicate
catalytic converter theft.”
SmartWater Group’s aftermarket scheme
SmartWater’s aftermarket scheme follows the success of an
initiative led by the Home Office funded National Infrastructure
Crime Reduction Partnership and supported by Toyota UK and
SmartWater, which achieved a 57% reduction in catalytic converter
theft*. Greater accessibility is now being enabled with the support
of aftermarket partners, such as MOT test stations, garages and
dealerships.
As an authorised registration centre, MOT stations and other
aftermarket companies gain an additional revenue stream through
marking and registering their customers’ catalytic converters.
Meanwhile, car owners gain the peace of mind that comes with
having their vehicles protected by SmartWater and their catalytic
converter recorded on the ‘National Asset Database’.
NTDA Chief Executive Stefan Hay said: “It’s been another terrific
year for entries, with some being without rival and after close
scrutiny, 49 have made it through to the finals and are now being
assessed by our independent panel of judges. As always, I would
have liked to have seen more entries from our tyre retailers,
distributors, wholesalers and recyclers, especially as I know, from
personal experience, the level of excellence many of them operate
to, but nevertheless we certainly have a battle on our hands across
many award categories.
I’m also surprised that more of our aftermarket equipment
supplier members aren’t competing for the crown in that category.
More than 600 guests have now booked for the 93rd Annual
and possibly record-breaking, evening and I am sure that my
co-host Louise Minchin will make it even more unique and add her
wonderful flair, charm and professionalism to the proceedings.”
Gallagher motor
trade team takes
on the Beast of Ben
Gallagher’s UK motor trade insurance team took part in
the recent ‘Beast of Ben’ challenge in Wales, raising
over £3,300 at the time of writing to help those in the
automotive industry who need it most.
Sending two teams – Team Alpha and Ange’s Angels – to
the event, which took place over the weekend of 6-8th July
2022, Gallagher’s motor trade colleagues completed a range
of gruelling challenges alongside other teams from across the
industry. These included abseiling, kayaking, orienteering, and
Autoelectro offers important advice
as classic car season continues
Classic car season is in full swing, and
Autoelectro is enjoying a buoyant time at
present. The rotating electrics specialist
revels in classic cars, with it being able
to offer either a unit from stock or a
‘reman and return’ service – with the
latter particularly pertinent.
For more than 35 years, Autoelectro
has remanufactured starter motors
and alternators, whether it be
bringing new-to-range references to
market, filling gaps in the pareto or fulfilling
‘classic requests’. From a Ford Fiesta and
Volkswagen Golf to a Jaguar XJS and MGB,
it can cater for all and, essentially, bookend
the market.
Focusing on classic car parts specifically,
the rush for components began in 2020,
driven by the first lockdown which occurred
in March 2020. Enthusiasts, according
to Autoelectro’s UK sales manager, Nick
Hood, “were able to finish those long-term
projects that would otherwise be
incomplete due to other commitments”.
Nick also believes that fewer classics
would’ve been driven during that period,
meaning cars were left in the garage or
under cover, meaning more replacement
parts were needed than normal when they
were eventually fired up and driven.
Sales remain upbeat but expectations
must be managed
With lockdowns and restrictions behind
us, the figures continue to make positive
reading for Autoelectro. While great news,
that does generate challenges too: the
older the vehicle, the harder it is to source
core and components.
Combine that with the well-documented
sourcing and pricing fragilities that exist –
not just in automotive circles but industries
worldwide – and Autoelectro has had to
respond accordingly.
As core becomes scarce for older
vehicles, Autoelectro has to ensure its
continuity, with some obscure pieces
subject to higher surcharge values. This
shouldn’t cause the customer an issue,
though, as returning the original unit will
mean the surcharge will be refunded.
What’s more, any classic car enthusiast
should be committed to this process,
as it presents a situation in which other
enthusiasts can benefit from Autoelectro
having the parts available on the shelf.
If these older references were available
as a new copy product, they could be
deleted from the range, leading to a
scenario where there was no original core
to rebuild and no availability for classic car
enthusiasts – it’s the sustainable route for
classic car motoring.
Furthermore, that decision to purchase
a remanufactured original unit will also be
rewarded when the vehicle owner decides
to cash-in their classic, as Nick explained:
“Autoelectro’s policy has always been to
remanufacture in-house – we have done so
since our inception in 1986.
“For classic cars, this is important,
as originality plays a significant part.
Indeed, it is possible to buy modified high
performance copy parts to fit these types
of vehicles, but, when it comes to selling
the car, the provenance of the components
underneath the bonnet can sway the value
of the vehicle.”
Autoelectro prides itself on availability
and range, and having the support of its
customers in returning units, particularly
for classic cars, will mean the remanufacturer
will be able to stock the parts
specialists and enthusiasts demand
year-on-year, extending the life of the
classic vehicle.
STAY SAFE
STAY LEGAL
SAVE MONEY
With the rail strikes threatening to cause further
traffic chaos on the roads as the big summer
holiday getaway begins, breakdown services are
bracing themselves for a rash of callouts. A high proportion
of those are likely to be for tyre failures, many entirely
preventable with a little forethought.
Many cars that normally see local journeys are being
pressed into use for long-distance commuting and holidays,
and defects that are a minor irritation become a major
problem when more miles are put under the wheels.
One such defect is poor suspension alignment, which
causes premature and uneven tyre wear and can even create
problems with electronic safety systems. Britain’s premier
wheel alignment equipment supplier – Absolute Alignment
– is urging all motorists to have their tyres checked professionally
rather than simply take depth measurements
themselves.
Technical Director at Absolute Alignment, Chris Dear,
says, “Many tyres that are legal show signs of uneven wear
that a skilled technician can interpret as a symptom of poor
suspension alignment. This can cause bald spots, blowouts
and in extreme cases the vehicle’s electronic safety systems
to malfunction because they rely on correct alignment to be
accurate.”
Absolute Alignment is campaigning for more awareness of
the problems that can be shown up by worn tyres. Its STAY
SAFE, STAY LEGAL, SAVE MONEY campaign highlights the
dangers of poor suspension alignment and recommends
regular wheel alignment checks as part of your car’s fitness
regime.
The IMI reports record-breaking rise
in the number of vehicle technicians
becoming EV-ready
Significant uplift in numbers in Quarter 1 2022 with
early indications that Quarter 2 will be even stronger
The number of technicians qualified
to work on electric vehicles (EVs)
in the UK is rising rapidly, according
to the latest data from the Institute of
the Motor Industry (IMI). The first three
months of 2022 had the highest quarterly
increase of EV qualified technicians on
record. The data also suggests that the
shortfall between EVs on the UK’s roads
and approved technicians to service,
repair and MOT them, will hit later than first
anticipated, now 2028 instead of 2026.
“The promising increase in technicians
who have taken EV qualifications so far
this year, which in turn makes them eligible
to obtain IMI TechSafe recognition, is
extremely encouraging,” said Steve Nash,
CEO of the Institute of the Motor Industry.
“2021 ended with 11% of technicians being
EV qualified. At the end of March 2022 the
dial had moved to 13%, representing over
28,000 technicians across the UK - it’s a
real sign that the sector is responding to
the increasing adoption of EV motoring.
“The rise in the Quarter 1 has already
had a meaningful impact on the predicted
shortfall of technicians. Based on SMMT
EV sales forecasts, the shortfall between
EVs on the UK’s roads and approved
technicians is now likely to be felt 24
months later than we were predicting last
year. What’s more, early indications are
that figures for Quarter 2 will set another
new record, which is great news for the
industry and for the increasing number of
EV drivers.”
Technicians who have met the IMI
TechSafe standards - endorsed by
the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles
(OZEV) - can showcase their credentials
by joining the IMI’s industry-wide
Professional Register. The Register lists
individual members – and their place
of work – who have been recognised
for their achievements, experience,
professionalism and commitment to a
Professional Standard of behaviours, and
for keeping their knowledge and skills up
to date through Continuing Professional
Development (CPD). Drivers of EVs can
access the Register online for free, to find
local qualified EV technicians and garages.
“The IMI’s Professional Register enables
those looking to service or repair their
vehicle, to check who to call upon, with
reassurance that they are in skilled,
competent and trustworthy hands”, added
Steve Nash. “For technicians who have the
relevant qualification, the IMI’s Professional
Register is also a valuable tool to reach a
wider customer base. For those with IMI
TechSafe recognition, it will help them
attract EV owners as potential long-term
customers.
“Collectively, professionals listed on the
IMI Professional Register are driving up
standards across the sector, reassuring
customers of an ethical and quality service
and increasing public confidence in an
electric automotive industry.”
Garages
urged to
examine
customer
service
practice
George Phillips, Head of Customer Service
and Operations at Garage Services Online
Thousands of independent garages
throughout the UK are unknowingly
falling short on customer service.
Despite having professional and helpful mechanics, waiting
areas with refreshments and free WiFi, many garages are
neglecting the point at which customer service actually begins.
George Phillips, head of customer service and operations
at Garage Services Online, says many garages still assume the
customer’s experience – and first impression – starts either with
a phone call or at the workshop in person. It’s an oversight that
can cost them dearly.
He said: “We speak with garage owners everyday who pride
themselves on first class face-to-face customer service, but fail
to recognise the very first point of contact is actually online.
“If your website is the equivalent of a member of staff with
little knowledge, who goes blank when asked a question and is
technically inept, then the first experience of your customer
service isn’t going to be good. Are they going trust you with their
vehicle?
“They already feel let down and will probably never get far
enough to experience the reality of the garage’s true customer
service.
“From the moment your business’ name appears in a Google
search, the meter is running and opinions are being formed – in
seconds.”
It’s estimated 75 percent of people make an assumption about
how good a business is, based on its website and what they
read online. They can do so within 2.6 seconds; arguably much
quicker than in the flesh.
Phillips concluded: “The reality is, it doesn’t really matter
whether a garage owner feels they need a good, responsive
website or not. It’s what the customer wants that’s critical. And
that’s the root of where excellent customer service begins.”
EV
Charging anxiety may be fuelled by
human insecurity, not the EV network,
as 55% of Brits panic if their devices
run out of battery
One of the main barriers to owning an
electric car might be caused by a
modern obsession with needing fully
charged personal devices.
New research from Volkswagen Financial
Services UK (VWFS) shows that more than
half of Brits (55%) panic if they know their
phone or laptop will run out of battery,
which suggests that charging anxiety among
EV considerers could be influenced more by
human psychology than scepticism about
the UK’s public charging network.
Charging anxiety is the uncertainty people
feel when contemplating a longer journey in
an EV because of concerns about how and
where to recharge their vehicle’s battery.
The findings also reveal that Gen Z and
Millennials (77%) are most likely to panic if
their personal device were to run out of
battery. However, this age group are most
likely to be prepared by owning a portable
charger (68%).
Despite an uneasy disposition to low
battery life, younger people are more
convinced than any other generation that
electric cars will benefit the environment,
with 66% of 18 – 24 year olds believing this
to be true. Only 22% of this age group said
they were not convinced, compared to 44%
of people aged 65 – 74 and 36% of over
75s.
The exclusive research found that
affordability remains the top issue for
would-be EV drivers, with 38% saying that
they cannot afford an EV, although 72%
would consider an EV as their next car if
money wasn’t an issue.
The charging conundrum
The second most cited concern is around
the current public charging network.
Three in 10 people (31%) believe there
are not enough charging points in the areas
where they live and work, however, when
we consider the average length of each car
journey in the UK is fewer than 10 miles, this
could be another reflection of the nation’s
skewed attitudes to battery life.
Furthermore, Volkswagen Financial
Services UK data shows that 75% of people
would expect their electric vehicle to travel
up to 300 miles on a single charge, and as
an example, the all-electric Volkswagen
ID.3 can travel up to 340 miles on a
single charge, which is in line with WLTP
(combined) data.
Add to this that almost nine in ten people
(88%) ensure their devices are fully charged
before leaving home, with over half deciding
to charge their devices overnight (52%) as
well as using battery saver modes (55%).
This fuels food for thought that home
charging points would be the most
beneficial option for many electric car
26 THE GARAGE
EV
drivers, but with factors such as lack of
off-road parking for some households, and
rising energy prices, more needs to be done
to address this to aid a wider transition to
electric.
When questioned about their
expectations for charging times before
resuming a journey, 32% of respondents
said they would be prepared to wait up to
an hour, with just 12% saying they would be
happy to wait for longer.
Indeed, 32% said they would only pause
journeys for 30 minutes to charge their EV,
and just over one in ten (12%) wanted the
waiting time to be less than 10 minutes.
Regional findings
People living in Scotland are most on board
with the idea that mainstream adoption
of electric cars will positively impact the
environment, with just 29% of people
disagreeing with this sentiment.
Scots were also found to be the UK’s
most patient demographic, with 16% of
respondents saying they would be willing
to wait more than an hour for their EV to
charge to 100%.
In addition, people from the North of
England are most committed to buying
an electric car despite the rising cost of
electricity, with one in four (25%) not put
off purchasing an EV despite increasing
energy bills.
Quentin Willson, former Top Gear
presenter and founder of the FairCharge
campaign, said: “We’ve seen an explosion in
EVs in the last two years and in the next four
or five years electric cars will become the
preferred choice for many. We just need to
make sure energy prices stay affordable.
“Many people don’t realise that Lithiumion
EV batteries are completely different to
the batteries in our phones and laptops and
so we need to educate new adopters to
think differently about battery life, reliability
and charging. There are many EVs that now
l Exclusive research from Volkswagen Financial Services UK (VWFS) shows that
more than half of Brits (55%) panic if they know their phone or laptop will run
out of battery, meaning that charging anxiety among EV considerers might be
more to do with human psychology than EV infrastructure
l Gen Z and Millennial drivers (77%) are most likely to panic if their personal
device runs out of battery, and this age group is also most likely to own a
portable charger (68%)
l Almost nine in ten people (88%) ensure their devices are fully charged before
leaving home – over half charge their devices overnight – meaning home charge
points would be useful for most EV drivers
l One in ten people say they are only prepared to wait for up to 10 minutes to
charge their EV, whilst just a third (32%) would wait for an hour
do 200 to 280 miles on a single charge and
batteries in some of the earliest EVs are
outlasting the chassis of the car. Just look
at our roads and you’ll see that hundreds of
thousands of EV drivers have folded electric
cars into their lives and successfully use
them without anxieties.
“Graze charging is now a thing, where
people charge at home, top up at work,
then again at the gym and also at the
supermarket. I think charging anxiety really
exists mainly among EV considerers as
opposed to EV drivers. I don’t know anyone
who’s not completed a trip because they
couldn’t find a charging station. We don’t
have petrol stations at the end of our roads
or fuel pumps in our driveways. Even with
our current infrastructure - which needs
to improve - we can see that EV drivers are
managing.
“The main priority for me as founder
FairCharge is to lobby the Government
to establish a Charging Charter, which
regulates fair costs, a fair experience, fair
connectivity and fair reliability across the
charging network. I’ve had talks with Grant
Shapps, the Secretary of State for Transport
- an EV driver and enthusiast like me - and
he agrees we need to offer new EV drivers
the best charging experience and most
affordable charging costs possible.”
Mike Todd, CEO at Volkswagen Financial
Services UK, said: “The findings of our
research make for interesting reading at a
critical time for the automotive industry.
Forecasts by the Competition and Markets
Authority (CMA) suggest that up to 480,000
public charging points will be required across
the UK by 2030 but it seems this roll-out
needs to happen more quickly to encourage
the majority of would-be EV drivers to make
the switch to electric.
“However, with public charging stations
being installed at supermarkets, gyms and
elsewhere, frequent top-ups rather than big
weekly charges are likely to be the best way
forward for many, especially those without
off-street parking. This research shows how
ingrained our devices and battery lives are in
our everyday lives, and I believe charging an
EV should be approached in the same way
we top up a smartphone battery – something
that’s much easier if you have multiple
chargers within close proximity.”
Karen Rotberg, co-founder of
BookMyGarage, said, “Our new booking
capability for EV servicing is in direct
response to the rapid rise in EV popularity
in recent years. More EVs were sold in
March than in the whole of 2019. And the
pool of EVs aged three years or more is
growing too.
“From a servicing, maintenance and
repair perspective, these electrified
vehicles have different demands, and we
want to ensure that drivers can easily find
a qualified garage and compare the best
possible prices locally.
“We have also widened our EV focus
with the launch of our EV Hub. We want to
support EV drivers by providing them with
a comprehensive set of guides that not
only helps to inform current EV owners,
but also enables those that are considering
their first steps towards switching to
Tesla to regain EV dominance
but competition will intensify
Tesla have announced that it has increased its electric vehicle
(EV) deliveries by 26.6% in Q222 on a year-on-year basis but
deliveries on a q-o-q declined by 17.9% over the same period,
as Covid-related manufacturing plant closures in China and ongoing
supply chain challenges slowed output.
Implications
Although Tesla’s vehicle deliveries fell on a quarter-on-quarter
basis in Q222 largely due to production stoppages at its Shanghai
Gigafactory (which produces Model 3 and Model Y models), we
see notable upside in output as the automaker ramps up vehicle
production at its Berlin and Austin plants and the resumption of
operations at the Shanghai plant as Covid-related restrictions ease.
Tesla has announced production stoppages at its newer Giga Berlin
and Giga Texas operations to upgrade the production lines in an
attempt to boost efficiency and accelerate production.
While we hold a more optimistic outlook for the Berlin based
plant’s ability to ramp up output over the short term, we expect
further delays at is Austin facilities. The Austin plant will utilise newer
production processes which are expected to cause delays as the
level of complexity would require more production fine-tuning to
accelerate output. Some of these changes are the production of the
4680 battery cells that would offer higher energy density levels thus
increasing range which would be suitable for the upcoming Semi and
Cybertruck models and a structural battery pack design aimed at
achieving better efficiency by curbing weight by a reported 10% and
improving the structural integrity of the vehicle.
Tesla Still On Course To Produce One Million Units In 2022
Tesla Vehicle Deliveries (2016-2022)
Source: Company Announcements
We believe Tesla is still on course to maintain its dominance in EVs
sold globally as pent-up demand will likely be fulfilled by a rapid
increase in vehicle supplies over the next 24 months, thereby
securing the automaker’s dominance in the EV segment over the
medium term (2022-2026). In 2022, we remain optimistic that Tesla
will manage to achieve higher production output levels compared
to 2019 delivery figures of 935,950 units and breach 1mn annual
deliveries. Our view is based on the automaker’s ability to whether
the semiconductor shortage by cutting back on what the carmaker
defines as redundant features such as USB ports and frontpassenger
seat lumbar features. Also supporting our view is Tesla’s
ability to ramp up production output through the use of large
aluminium die casting machines able to produce large pieces of
body components in a much shorter timeframe and eliminating the
need of metal bonding while also reducing the level of supply chain
risk the automaker faces.
Our long-term view of Tesla’s dominance in global EV sales is less
positive as rising competition from well-established players such
as Volkswagen and BYD Auto, that are electrifying their product
range expeditiously, will gradually erode Tesla’s dominance going
forward. Although BYD Auto has managed to surpass Tesla in global
EV (fully electric and plugin electric vehicles) sales volumes in H122
by selling 641,350 vehicles versus 564,743 deliveries from Tesla, we
believe this milestone will be short-lived as BYD Auto faces possible
production stoppages due to lockdown measures implemented in
the city of Xi’an where the automaker’s manufacturing operations
are mainly based. We also expect relatively new entrants in the
EV market (such as NIO, Li Auto and Xpeng) that are experiencing
accelerated growth levels will be another source of competition for
Tesla going forward. NIO has managed to keep production steady
in Q222 and managed a milder decrease of 2.8% q-o-q, however
y-o-y growth levels only rose by 14.4%.
What’s Next?
After the planned plant upgrades at Tesla’s Berlin and Austin
locations, it will likely take the automaker a couple of months to
iron out any additional production bottlenecks stemming from the
upgrades. Furthermore, we note that while China’s strict ‘Zero-
Covid’ policy remains in place, production disruptions will remain an
elevated risk for automakers. We will therefore continue to monitor
developments from Tesla’s Shanghai operations and the latest
developments at the newer facilities based in Austin and Berlin.
NEOM’S ENOWA to boost Extreme E
with green hydrogen power
Extreme E have announced a multi-year relationship with ENOWA, NEOM’s energy, water and
hydrogen subsidiary, to introduce green hydrogen power to their global sustainable racing series.
The announcement comes just days
after NEOM, a sustainable region in
northwest Saudi Arabia being built
from the ground up, was revealed as the
title partner of the McLaren Formula E and
Extreme E racing teams under the banner of
‘NEOM McLaren Electric Racing’.
ENOWA is the engine room for sustainable
energy, water and hydrogen at NEOM.
Green hydrogen is widely seen as the
most promising green energy carrier for
the future to fight climate change. This
technology supports the transportation of
renewable energy over long distances and
the decarbonisation of major industries and
infrastructure.
Extreme E has become a role model
to demonstrate the co-existence of
motorsports, excitement and sustainability
and an ambassador for our planet’s climatic
hot spots through their dedicated race
locations.
By partnering Extreme E and ENOWA aim
to implement innovative green hydrogenbased
technologies to not only power
the championship towards a 100% “leave
no trace” ambition but also to showcase
the opportunities around this technology.
ENOWA will play an active part on the
scientific advisory board of Extreme E and
together ENOWA and Extreme E will develop
educational programs intended to excite
young generations about climate positive
solutions.
Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of
Extreme E, said: “We are delighted to
have ENOWA onboard as our official
Green Hydrogen Power Partner. We have
collaborated with NEOM for some time,
particularly in delivering a hugely successful
first Desert X Prix of Season 2; this
partnership with ENOWA marks a further
step in our mission for a more sustainable
future.
“The work undertaken by ENOWA is
extremely ambitious and an exciting
prospect. NEOM, much like ourselves,
pushes the boundaries of environmental
sustainability and we are delighted to be
partnering with ENOWA to go even further
in our objective to raise awareness of the
climate crisis.
“ENOWA plans to lead the development
of world-class, sustainable energy, water
and hydrogen systems which I am sure will
become a reference point in the future, and
our series will also benefit from this greater
focus on technology and innovation.”
Commenting on the relationship Peter
Terium, CEO of ENOWA, added: “Business
decisions in NEOM have sustainability at
their core which is why we are delighted to
partner with Extreme E. Our partnership
is aimed towards both creating visibility
to the most urgent problems the planet is
facing but at the same time demonstrating
solutions that deliver meaningful impact.
Together we can accelerate innovations
in clean technologies powered by green
hydrogen, contributing to hydrogen
mobility markets and the future of global
decarbonisation.”
NEOM is the first to produce green
hydrogen at scale, paving the way for
the hydrogen economy globally. Due to
the abundance of solar, wind and water
resources in NEOM, ENOWA and their
partners will provide large quantities of
green hydrogen that many industries
can use. ENOWA benefits from NEOM’s
greenfield site, which has no legacy
infrastructure, to advance energy, water,
and hydrogen innovation while providing
sustainable fuels like green hydrogen to
international users. It shares an ethos with
Extreme E in its demands for a greater
sustainability focus.
At the Season two opener of Extreme E in
NEOM in February 2022, the series revealed
its plans to launch an off-road hydrogen
Championship in 2024. Named Extreme H,
the championship will sit alongside Extreme
E, its existing electric racing series, and will
be a world-first for motorsport – further
reiterating the commitment to showcasing
the possibilities of new, sustainable
technologies in the race to fight climate
issues.
Development for the Extreme H vehicle
is already underway, with the aim being the
launch of a prototype in early 2023.
EV home charging
company
EVIOS secures
£5.8M to fuel
ambitious growth
● Peer valuation forecasts value of £300 million within four years; tenfold
return predicted for first-round investors
● EVIOS sets sights on becoming largest EV home charge provider by 2025
● New funds will support R&D, launch of the EVIOS Two workplace unit and
expansion into Europe
● Unique functionality of EVIOS One will accelerate mass uptake of EVs
British electric vehicle (EV) home charging
company, EVIOS, has secured significant
new external investment within weeks of
launching. Just a fortnight after its launch
in late April, the company’s initial target
had been pledged, and funding closed with
£5.8 million raised.
EVIOS is the brainchild of David Martell,
founder and former CEO of Chargemaster,
which was sold to bp for £132 million in
2018. Of the 66 new investors in EVIOS,
nearly half (30) previously had a stake in
Chargemaster. With a pre-money valuation
of £28 million and EIS advance assurance
from HMRC, EVIOS is an attractive
proposition for investors. A peer group
valuation of £300 million within five years
places the initial stakeholders in a solid
position to see a tenfold return on their
investment. EVIOS joins the home charging
market in a unique position offering a
standout product that is competitively
priced with multiple routes to market.
EVIOS will use the majority of the funds
to fuel the company’s ambitious plans for
growth. £2.2 million will go into research
and product development; £1.2 million
will facilitate the launch of the EVIOS Two
workplace charging unit; and £1.6 million
will act as working capital and support the
company’s expansion into Europe early
next year.
73% of EV charging activity currently
takes place at home, where it is around
a quarter of the price of using a public
charge point. Martell comments: “The
home charge market is expected to grow
exponentially as more buyers make the
shift to electrified mobility. The current
base of 300,000 home charge points in
the UK is expected to reach between
seven and 10 million during the next
decade. Our focus is to incorporate stateof-the-art
technology into highly intuitive
yet simple products that make life easier
for EV drivers, and help more people
embrace electric mobility.
“The incredible support from our
new investors will now help us meet the
charging needs of the 70% of EV buyers
with access to off-street parking, and
the users or landlords of multioccupancy
buildings. By addressing these previously
unmet market needs, we will ensure EVIOS
becomes the UK’s largest EV home charge
provider by 2025.”
The EVIOS One makes charging an EV at
home as simple as possible. It is the first
unit to have a large colour screen, which
displays charging information using jargonfree
icons. Three charge modes support
changing customer needs – Pure Speed
charges as quickly as possible; Pure Green
charges using any on-site energy sources
such as solar power; and Pure Value uses
auto tariff scheduling to only charge during
off-peak times and significantly reduce
costs.
The EVIOS One takes account of the
user’s energy tariff and vehicle-specific
data to detail actual money spent and
mileage added. Unique PIN-protected
multi-user functionality can accommodate
up to eight profiles per unit, making it
ideal for workplaces and multi-occupancy
residences. Multiple units can be managed
via the app, which also generates historic
user reports to facilitate recharges to
customers or tenants.
Every interaction with EVIOS and its
product is designed to be as simple and
stress-free as possible. With the current
cost of living crisis, EVIOS wants to put
users in control of their finances, whether
charging using solar or off-peak tariffs or
helping to calculate recharge costs for
clients or work expenses.
The EVIOS One is manufactured at
EVIOS’ Bedford HQ, eradicating the long
wait times of concern to many customers.
At the point of order, customers are
able to select an installation date that
suits them and one of EVIOS in-house
installation team will fit the unit to the
home, configure the user profile(s) and
guide the customer through a simple
tutorial of the unit and app.
EARTH
OVERSHOOT DAY
BORG Automotive and remanufacturing make an
important contribution to conserving natural resources
Every year, the non-profit organisation Global Footprint Network announces the Earth Overshoot Day. It marks the
day when humanity has used up the resources that planet Earth can provide in a year. It is becoming increasingly
clear that mankind must change course and curb its consumption of resources. In the automotive aftermarket, all
involved parties can make a decisive contribution to this – with the use of remanufactured parts, says the Danish
company BORG Automotive, and also announces a renewable energy initiative.
Earth Overshoot Day 2022 lands on
July 28. The date describes the day
on which all nations together have
used up the resources available annually
without overexploitation. And the national
data already available once again make us
sit up and take notice: If all countries in
the world consumed as much as Qatar,
the global community would have been
living on credit since 11 February. If the
consumption of Canada, the USA and
the Arab Emirates is taken as a basis, all
resources of this year would already have
been used up on 13 March. Also, Germany
has been consuming of next year’s
resources since 4 May, Spain since 12 May,
Switzerland since 13 May and the UK since
19 May.
Remanufacturing: BORG Automotive is
leading in Europe
One thing is clear: Industrialised countries
in particular must rethink and conserve
natural resources. The transition to a
circular economy must be driven forward
more decisively, and the reuse of resources
must be given priority over scrapping.
Remanufacturing is of course not the only
solution to conserving natural resources
however, the example of BORG Automotive
shows how much potential there is in the
circular economy.
The Danish company is the largest
independent automotive remanufacturer
in Europe and specialises in the remanufacturing
of car spare parts. In a complex
process, it remanufactures used OE
starters, alternators, A/C compressors,
EGR valves, turbo chargers, brake calipers,
steering racks and steering pumps to as
new condition and thereby prolongs the
product lifetime. Spare parts from BORG
Automotive are visually and qualitatively
indistinguishable from new, original parts.
Considerable savings potential: 88
percent less raw materials required
Remanufacturing saves a considerable
amount of resources: Studies have shown
that the remanufacturing of a starter, for
example, requires 88 percent less raw
materials. Compared to the production
of a new part, energy consumption is
reduced by 55 percent and CO2 emissions
by 52 percent.
EV
“With such savings, the automotive
aftermarket can do its part to achieve the United
Nations’ sustainability goals. If all stakeholders in
our industry increasingly focus on remanufacturing
and saving resources, we can achieve a lot
together,” explains Sten Højland, Compliance
Director at BORG Automotive, adding, “It
is true that remanufacturing increases the
logistical effort somewhat, 5 per cent in the
case of starters, because used parts have to
be ‘collected’ in the market and returned. But
in total, these effects are not significant. The
savings by far outweigh the additional efforts
and, against the backdrop of an increasingly
growing environmental awareness among car
drivers, remanufactured parts is a good way to
meet their needs.”
Gradually switching to renewable energies
as part of GHG emission reduction target
To further improve its own balance, BORG
Automotive has launched a renewable energy
initiative. By 2030, the company intends to
reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of its
production, located in Europe, by 30 percent.
And by 2023 it wants to carry out a 3rd party
verified life cycle assessment to quantify
the CO2 savings of its eight product groups
compared with new products. Sten Højland:
“We have initiated the transition to renewable
energies and are looking forward to the progress.
At the same time, we look forward to, by next
year, being able to update our customers on the
exact CO2 savings they can contribute with by
choosing our remanufactured products.”
Remove valuables from your car
A simple mistake to make, but don’t leave valuables on display!
Keep your car keys safe
When at home, it’s vital to put your keys somewhere safe – away
from the front door “maybe use a faraday box”. Too many thieves
help themselves to your keys and take your car straight off the drive.
Keyless theft, also known as relay theft, works using short-range
radio waves. The key will transmit a signal which is then picked up
by the receiver in your car. This type of theft tricks your car into
thinking that your keys are physically present. If your keys are left
near the front-door and you keep your car parked outside nearby,
you’re leaving your car vulnerable to this type of theft.
Park in well-lit, secure spaces
Don’t have access to a drive or garage? Park in a well-lit space close
to other vehicles. Thieves don’t usually like a challenge; they want
a quick and easy steal with as few witnesses as possible. If you park
close to other vehicles and park somewhere well-lit, you’ll deter
thieves. Found somewhere to park close to CCTV? Even better.
Invest in additional security
You might be thinking, “my vehicle already comes with security
from the manufacturer, why would I need anything else?” This is
because thieves are continuously learning how to bypass modern
vehicle security, so it’s always wise to invest in the newest security
technology. The CAN-PHANTOM immobiliser is the perfect
deterrent.
Trackers
Although trackers won’t prevent theft, they can make it easier for
you to retrieve your vehicle once a theft has taken place.
Thieves are getting smarter and organised thieves may use
scanning equipment to find the tracker or disable them. We advise
that you install a back-up tracker which you can turn on remotely to
add an extra layer of security.
Immobilisers
Another worthwhile investment is to install a vehicle immobiliser. An
aftermarket immobiliser protects your vehicle from different types
of theft, including keyless-theft and relay theft, which are continuing
to rise across the country. “The CAN-PHANTOM”
How it works?
The CAN-PHANTOM prevents a vehicle’s engine from being started
until a unique PIN code has been entered, so even if your car keys
were stolen, your car isn’t going anywhere without the pin.
The CAN-PHANTOM currently has more than 85 certified installers
across the UK and Ireland, and the company is continuously adding to
their team of professional fitters.
Yiannimize
Most recently, CAN-PHANTOM has certified the team at Yianimize
Modifications, in Enfield, London. They are now official installers of
the CAN-PHANTOM, fitting them to their endless celebrity customer
list and to Yianimize Managing Director Yianni Charalambous personal
vehicles. Watch Yianni describe the importance of the CAN-
EV
Tackling
EV vibration
with Hunter
According to data recently revealed by the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), three quarter of a million
electric cars, vans, buses and trucks were on the road in 2021.
As EV usage continue to grow,
workshops need to be equipped
and staff trained in order to address
a host of new servicing challenges. While
much focus and attention, quite rightly, is
on the vehicle’s electronic architecture,
workshops should also consider new
challenges associated with traditional
components.
The NVH conundrum
“As part of the EV revolution, workshops
will undoubtedly see more customers
who have concerns about vibration
issues,” explains Clive Seabrook, CEO,
Pro-Align, the exclusive UK distributor
of Hunter wheel servicing equipment.
“Replacing an internal combustion engine
with an electronic drivetrain means that
drivers will be much more aware of other
vibrations, such as those from wheel and
tyre assemblies, that would previously have
been masked by those coming from the
engine. Consequently, workshops need to
prepare for this with equipment that can
diagnose and solve these issues efficiently
and effectively.”
The solution, according to Pro-Align,
is the Hunter Road Force Elite (RFE)
diagnostic wheel balancer as traditional
wheel balancers are unable to solve the
most challenging and subtle of wheel
vibration issues other than by trial and
error alone.
A unique diagnostic approach
Adopting a unique diagnostic approach,
the RFE can provide a fast, first-time fix to
any wheel-vibration problems, even doing
so in less time than a standard wheel
balancer.
The RFE differs from standard balancers
as it measures tyre forces known as Road
Force Variation (RFV) and Lateral Force
(LF) to conduct a full diagnostic of the
wheel and tyre assembly. It does this by
scanning the wheel rim and applying a
load via a roller to take the wheel and tyre
assembly on a simulated road test.
Once RFV is identified, the
balancer provides a ‘ForceMatching’
recommendation which matches the
stiff spot on the tyre with the low spot on
the wheel rim, minimising any vibrations
to give a smoother ride. Where LF is
identified due to conicity of the tyres, the
RFE even advises of the best position on
the vehicle to counteract it for a straighter
drive.
A better ride for all
“Undoubtedly, motorists are going to
become more demanding of workshops
with regard to wheel vibration issues,”
adds Seabrook. “Of course, this isn’t
exclusively an EV issue as ride quality
continues to improve on all cars.
Thankfully though, we’re delighted that
once again, the insightful engineers at
Hunter have been among the first to
identify this future problem and develop a
solution that will help workshops provide
their customers with the very best levels
of service.”
year for the past five years, the firm also
offers a range of Malibu ban conversion,
Auto-Trial, Auto-Sleepers, and Roller Team
motorhomes.
To pave the way for future success,
the A-class specialist recently relocated
to a brand new, purpose-built premises
in Cannock, Staffordshire. Alongside its
impressive showroom and lot, the new
premises incorporates a state-of-theart
service centre for aftersales support,
completed by a set of Totalkare’s T8DC
cable-free mobile column lifts.
A flexible solution to vehicle lifting,
the T8DC mobile column lift features
adjustable forks to accommodate a range
of wheel diameters and can lift 7,500kg
per column. Chargeable from a 240v
plug socket, they can also be used in
configurations of four, six or eight to lift
heavier triaxle or four-axle vehicles.
The addition of the T8DC mobile column
lifts at Go European’s service centre
enables operatives to work underneath
vehicles at a comfortable height, while the
easy manoeuvrability of the lifts means
they can be set aside when not in use,
freeing up workshop space for other tasks.
The T8DCs, which have been lease
hired by Go European, will be supported
by a comprehensive service contract
from Totalkare including two field service
engineer visits per year.
“We’re very proud of our new home in
Cannock, which enables us to continue
providing first class sales and service
support to our customers,” said David
Grimley, Director of Go European, “A big
part of this is the quality of aftersales
service we provide, and to do this we
wanted to equip our service centre with
the best equipment. Totalkare’s mobile
column lifts tick all the boxes for us in
this respect and we’ve seen the benefits
immediately.”
George Georgiou, Area Sales Manager,
commented: “Go European is clearly
delighted to support their future growth
with the supply of our market-leading
mobile column lifts and become part of
their local supply chain.”
HELLA GUTMANN
introduces the MT-HV high
voltage measurement module
With the phenomenal growth in the sales of hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), workshops need to be able
to accurately and safely take the high voltage electrical measurements associated with this fast developing
technology. As always, Hella Gutmann is on hand to support with its latest module.
“Following the recent introduction of
the mega macs X and macsRemote
diagnostic devices, Hella Gutmann has
again proactively addressed the future with
the addition of another must have tool,”
explains Head of Hella Gutmann UK, Neil
Hilton.
“As is clear by every measure, high
voltage (HV) vehicles are here to stay, so
the safe and accurate measurement of
their electrical voltage is a necessity for
workshops that intend to stay in the game,
because they don’t want to be turning away
business to the vehicle manufacturers (VMs)
franchised dealers or other more future
oriented competitors. They therefore need
a tool to allow them to undertake repairs
and diagnosis on these vehicles.
“The Hella Gutmann MT-HV module,
was specifically created for work on
electric and hybrid vehicles and utilises
permanently integrated HV measurement
technology. However, it also incorporates
a slot where the more familiar MT-56
and MT-77 low voltage modules can be
inserted, which transforms the MT-HV into
a wireless measurement module for both
low and high voltage measurements.
“Specially designed for HV measurements,
the MT-HV’s cables, which have a thick
cross-section that makes them easy to
hold while wearing protective gloves, also
encompass safety features such as the
contact switch that must be held when
taking the measurement. In addition, if
necessary, the measuring tips can also be
easily replaced and even be used with VM
specific, high voltage adapters.
“As an internal battery provides its power
supply, apart from the measuring cables,
there is no lead or connection that could
be a distraction or safety risk when work
is being carried out on HV components,
because the MT-HV operates wirelessly,
with its control unit communicating with a
Hella Gutmann mega macs X, for example,
via Bluetooth.
“Just as we have done with the mega
macs X, we have also changed the way
the software licences for the device can
be set and changed to suit the immediate
requirements of the workshop.
“For instance, provided that the right
accessories are used, such as the
appropriate measuring tips and terminals,
as well as the correct ampere clamps to
match the current, the MT-HV with a low
voltage module inserted, can be used with
a basic X3/X4 software licence. This allows
the measurement technology to function
as a two channel, digital multimeter and
ultra-fast oscilloscope, exclusively for
low voltage measurements. In addition,
in conjunction with a MT-77 it can be
connected to LPD kit sensors and is able to
perform pressure measurements.”
Every business owner knows how important it is to plan and
consider future expenditures and the costs of running a garage.
Funding equipment over time rather than an immediate outlay
is ensuring cash flows during such a period of evolution in the
industry are being maintained at a reasonable level. The major
key with lease finance, you can buy new equipment immediately
and start profiting from it without risking any other part of your
business.
Keep the money in the bank for the daily running of your
business has always been key, cash is king as they say.
Here are just some of the benefits of financing your
Mirka helps clean up workspaces
Mirka UK is helping to organise workshop floors across the UK with the addition of a new modular trolley to its accessories portfolio.
Available with two set-ups, the trolley provides technicians with a place to store all their machines and consumables and the option
to modify it based on the job they are performing.
The base trolley comes with either drawers or shelves and a
new hose arm with two machine hooks. The machine hooks
are easy to attach and adjust depending on the tool hanging
from them and the hose arm has been developed to fit two
27mm hoses and one 20mm hose.
To complement the base models and provide additional
storage, users can purchase a range of accessories that
seamlessly fit into the modular design of the trolley. These include
a tool wall, shelves and hooks, a spray gun holder, an aerosol can
holder and a waste bag holder.
In addition, the trolley can be easily moved from one job to
the next by the user, so they do not have to carry over the various
tools and abrasives they will need to complete the job.
Steve Smith, national sales manager ART for Mirka UK, says,
“We are always looking at ways to make a technician’s job easier
and more convenient and the addition of the modular trolley
to our product portfolio is the next logical step to achieve this
goal. We know that space is at a premium on the workshop floor
and the product’s modular design offers two major benefits. The
first is it is easily adaptable for the job at hand and any future
jobs that the business might add to their menu of services. The
second is it provides the user with enough storage to ensure a
tidy work area and reduces the need to go looking for items as
everything is one place.”
MAHA UK MBT 2250 EUROSYSTEM
‘perfect addition for workshops looking to invest
in quality and DVSA approved equipment’
Suitable for class 4 and 7 vehicles, as well as one of the approved pieces of equipment for
MOTs by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), MAHA UK’s 2250 EUROSYSTEM
is the perfect addition to any workshop looking to invest in quality and DVSA approved
equipment.
As it’s for class 4 and 7 vehicles, the MBT
2250 EUROSYSTEM is appropriate for
cars and vans with an axle load up to
3.5t. Built for high volume and repeatability,
MOT testers and technicians can be assured
of a product that will give them consistent
and clear results.
After racking up a quarter of a century as
a UK subsidiary of MAHA, the manufacturer
is acutely aware of the need and demands
from existing or prospective customers for
reliability, longevity and accuracy.
For instance, the MBT 2250 EUROSYSTEM
is fitted with a consistent speed motor.
These motors/gearboxes are assembled in
house and designed to withstand extreme
torque and stress – giving a longer lifespan of
the assembly.
EUORSYSTEM offers a one-stop shop
The MBT 2250 and EUROSYSTEM come handin-hand
– but what is EUROSYSTEM?
EUROSYSTEM controls the brake tester,
but where this intuitive software comes into
its own is that it can access, test and report
tests from other modules, allowing the MBT
2250 to transform into an all-encompassing
workshop platform:
● Headlight tester, such as the MAHA MLT
3000
● Sideslip mat
MAHA UK Sales Manager, Nick Austin,
explained: “EUROSYSTEM comes as standard
on all our brake testers and is one of our
unique selling points. Its user-friendly
software and on-screen graphics allow the
technician to get on with the job quickly
and, considering it can be used on several
workshop stations, get on with the job
efficiently.
“EUROSYSTEM configures a test report,
including all the measurement and evaluation
results of the tests performed, onto one
single print-out. Ultimately, EUROSYSTEM
turns MAHA UK’s brake testers into
futureproof workshop test and diagnostics
platforms, making life easier for the user.”
Relationship with Garage Equipment
Association (GEA)
The criteria for meeting DVSA specification
is becoming more stringent; therefore,
MAHA UK needs to stay on top of its game
to ensure everything required to be ‘green
coded’ – equipment that is current and fully
compatible for use in MOT sites – is met,
like up-to-date technical requirements,
calibration, level of instruction manual and
identification.
The GEA upholds industry standards by
handling the approval process on behalf
of the DVSA, and MAHA UK is in regular
dialogue with the GEA to help maintain its
own standards and, therefore, offer the best
equipment and service to workshops.
Ecobat Battery and the ONE BOX
battery installation solution
Since the AGM (absorbent glass mat) battery was adopted as the
original equipment fitment for micro-hybrid (start/stop enabled)
applications, pan-European battery distributor Ecobat Battery
has been at the forefront in expressing the need for independent
workshops to be fully up to speed when it comes to both the
batteries and the associated technology present in these vehicles.
However, although big strides have been made in the intervening
years, there are still some workshops that have yet to grasp the
issues and are therefore losing out on the potential it offers.
After researching the market and discovering that nationally, 43%
of workshops turned away start/stop battery replacement work,
Ecobat addressed the problem head-on and introduced the ONE
BOX, a solution that consolidated all the equipment needed to test
and install start/stop batteries into a single package and which
continues to provide workshops with an easy route to access the
profit potential these installations yield.
With the ONE BOX package and a little training to enable
technicians get the very best from the equipment, workshops find
that fitting these batteries correctly is not a complicated process
and allows them to provide a more professional service, which
improves customer satisfaction and reduces the risk of future
warranty claims due to the incorrect installation or use of an
inappropriate battery.
The components brought together in the ONE BOX bundle,
include an EBT780 battery analyser to accurately assess the
condition of the existing battery, an EBC8UK battery charger and
OBD lead to support the vehicle’s ECU/data storage during the
replacement process and an EBT420 battery validation tool to
ensure the new AGM/EFB battery is correctly assimilated into the
vehicle’s battery management system. However, the package can
also be supported with signage and point-of-sale material, to allow
workshops to fully promote their start/stop replacement capability
to motorists.
As with the other products in its portfolio, that include the
Exide, VARTA®, Lucas and Numax brands, the ONE BOX solution
is available to workshops through the company’s motor factor
customers. However, if a workshop’s regular supplier does not work
with Ecobat, they can still gain access to the package by contacting
the company direct, which will then arrange for one of its existing
customers to supply it, as well as coordinate the necessary training.
By combining the right tools and helpful guidance, Ecobat’s ONE
BOX opens the way for workshops currently turning start/stop
battery replacement work away and allows them to access the
business and increase their profits, with a straightforward, practical
and inexpensive solution.
RL Automotive aligns safety
and savings for a greener
transport world
As transport industries strive to balance commercial considerations with safety, compliance and the general ‘green’ issues
of the day, leading digital analysis and sustainable technology developer, RL Automotive, has introduced a unique tyre
management platform with a range of monitoring systems which enables fleet managers across all commercial sectors to
reduce running costs, increase safety and limit the environmental impact of their operation.
One such system, AutoAlign -
recently launched in the UK,
following a £2m/24-month
development project and part funded by
UK’s Clean Air Programme - is a dynamic
and unique real time vehicle monitoring
module designed to combat the problem
of wheel misalignment. This condition says
RL Automotive is unknowingly suffered by a
third of all commercial vehicles and around
half of all cars and vans in the UK.
In fact, during the development of
AutoAlign, industry research gathered
by RL Automotive concludes that on UK
roads today, there are 18.7 million vehicles
operating with incorrect wheel alignment
– a potentially dangerous and costly
condition which can go undetected for
months.
Currently, wheel alignment inspection
is not part of scheduled maintenance or
MOT tests, however misalignment results in
excessive fuel costs and uneven tyre tread
abrasion which in turn can lead to tyre
failure, accidents and excessive particulate
emissions – a major environmental
threat, as identified by the World Health
Organisation.
AutoAlign is a low-cost solution
consisting of sensors fitted to the steering
axle to detect wheel mis alignment as soon
as it occurs. RL Automotive’s cloud-based
servers automatically alert fleet managers
so that they can take remedial action,
saving fuel costs and excessive vehicle
emissions.
“This is all about good-old prevention
rather than cure!” Enthuses RL Automotive
Director Mark Longden. “Using our unique
telematics connectivity, we already have
a mobile wheel and chassis alignment
system in place, but this new module
uses bespoke wheel sensors in harness
with F1-grade telematics to enable
vehicle operators to remotely identify any
misalignment issues before they become a
serious and costly problem.”
Plus, explains Mark, in addition to the
numerous cost and safety implications
of misaligned wheels, operators can take
corrective action to significantly reduce
harmful emissions. “Just one degree out of
alignment between the wheels and/or the
vehicle centre will cause a 15% deficiency
in tyre wear and 3% increased fuel cost.
Therefore, early corrective action will
greatly reduce carbon output and keep PM
10 and PM 2.5 tyre particulate emissions to
a minimum.”
AutoAlign is currently undergoing field
trials with several strategic industrial fleet
partners and is scheduled for release
during the first quarter of 2022.
takes up the role as Motul UK Technical Specialist, with immediate effect.
This is the latest move in Motul’s
strengthening of its dedicated British
business - Motul UK - as the global
lubricant force expands its operations
in what is one of its key development
markets. “Has”, as he is generally
known, will henceforward head up
Motul’s technical function and all
related aspects in the UK and Ireland.
Has brings with him experience of
a number of different aspects of the
automotive mix.
Graduating from the University of
Bradford, with First-Class Honours
in Mechanical and Automotive
Engineering he worked as a Design
Engineer, before moving into the
automotive sector as a Production
Engineer with the JTEKT Group’s Koyo
Bearings brand, where his assignments
included projects for Jaguar, BMW and
Electric Motor Specialists, YASA .
Has then moved to Total Energies as
a Product Engineer, working on various
aspects of the business, including their
in-house systems, digital tools and
automotive troubleshooting.
“We are extremely pleased to
welcome Has on board at Motul UK,”
enthuses Callum Goodland, Motul UK
Country Manager. “He adds another
key string to our bow and has joined
Motul at a very exciting time, as we
develop our UK and Irish business.
Has’s appointment is a measure of
how fast things are moving at Motul
at the moment and we look forward
very much to him being part of our
expanding team here at Motul UK.”
PEOPLE
MotoNovo Appoint New Head of
Partnerships & Transformation
MotoNovo Finance has appointed Matt
Lucas to the business’ newly created
position of Head of Partnerships.
The new role underlines MotoNovo’s
commitment to bringing market-leading
innovations to the retail automotive
market and collaborating with like-minded
organisations. It is a pledge reinforced
by Matt joining the business Senior
Leadership Team.
Stepping up from a senior sales
leadership team within MotoNovo, where
he has worked for the last ten years, Matt
is clear that the new position is a crucial
part of the business growth plans for the
coming years noting;
“My new role is all about combining my
extensive dealer-facing experience within
the newly formed team I now lead, with
best in class innovations, partnerships and
technology. The motor retailing model is
evolving rapidly and we are committed
to helping dealers embrace change
and create an ever-evolving model that
ensures offline and online dealers remain
a valued part of people and businesses’
vehicle buying and ownership or usage
experience.”
The Partnerships & Transformation
Team includes all of MotoNovo’s
partnership, specialist asset, sales
development and distribution functions,
including field sales specialists,
distribution specialists, L&D specialists
and partnerships, along with plans to grow
in new specialist asset classes.
Karl Werner
Matt Lucas
Reflecting upon the key appointment,
MotoNovo’s Managing Director Karl Werner
concludes;
“I see this as a crucial appointment
that reinforces our long-held dealercentric
commitment and our reputation
for fresh thinking. That we have appointed
someone from our sales team to lead the
team says much for the practical, resultsfocused
nature of the role. Knowing Matt
well, I’m confident that he will hit the road
running.”
Prestige Fleet Servicing
bolsters senior team with
brace of new appointments
Prestige Fleet Servicing (Prestige), part of the AA, is looking ahead
to the future with a brace of new appointments. The move, which
follows the appointment of Penny Stoolman as managing director
earlier this year, coincides with exciting new plans for the business,
while completing the Prestige leadership team.
Tina Hand joins as customer service director. A customer
operations expert with more than 18 years’ experience combining
customer relations, call centre management, resource planning and
budget control, Hand is a strong leader with a proven track record
in building teams prepared to exceed expectations.
The appointment complements Tony Murtagh’s confirmation in
role as B2B sales director. Murtagh brings a wealth of experience in
the fleet industry to the business, most recently holding the position
of global sales director for e-mobility SaaS provider GoWithFlow. He
has previously worked with a number of leading brands across the
fleet leasing, vehicle manufacture and asset finance sectors.
Part of the AA, Prestige plays a critical role in the AA’s wider
group strategy in capturing driver requirements, both planned
and unplanned – a role set to rise in prominence as customers’
servicing, maintenance and repair (SMR) requirements evolve.
“I’m delighted to begin this new role, and very excited to be part
of the future plans of the Prestige team,” said Hand. “Working
with the right partner is becoming increasingly important for our
customers, something that is vital when demand has the potential
to outstrip supply – the situation we are currently experiencing in
the garage sector. In working with a partner like Prestige, businesses
can be confident of a resilient transport solution that will enable
their business to thrive in the future.”
“The SMR sector is undergoing an exciting period of change,”
added Murtagh. “I’m looking forward to joining the Prestige team as
we increase our capability to help fleets adapt and transition ahead
of the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans.”
