Supporting local schools
and colleges
Crawfords’ team has been
busy attending local schools
and colleges, getting the next
generation enthusiastic about
the industry. Tom Power (Sussex/
Hants Product Demonstrator)
recently attended the two-day
Future Fields STEM event at
Plumpton College. Tom spent time
with local secondary school pupils,
teaching them about technology
in agriculture. Students even had
the chance to set-up and use the
tractor guidance system.
Writtle Junior School held a Car
Show in June but they fancied
something a little different. So, we
were pleased to provide a Fendt
724 tractor to put on display, along
with some goodies for the children.
Scott Clark (Kent Service Manager)
and Kieran Hale (Kent Technician)
attended the Hadlow College Open
Day, this is always a well-attended
event. A Fendt 724 and trailed
sprayer were on display with both
Kieran and Scott on-hand to show
the public around the machines
and talk about the farming calendar
and their day-to-day jobs working
for a machinery dealer.
Health & Safety
Nine team members from various
departments across the business
have recently been awarded a
IOSH (Institution of Occupational
Safety and Health) qualification.
This was a 3-day course where
a final exam was required for
participants to pass the course.
The course was led by Mia Banbury,
our Safety Consultant from Safety
Revolution. Safety Revolution work
with Crawfords to ensure that the
business is adhering to all rules and
regulations.
The future is bright
ead all about our
agwood ltd aquisition
The acquisition
of Agwood Ltd by
neighbouring AGCO
dealer RW Crawford
Agricultural Machinery
Ltd represents a
continued commitment
to providing a firstclass
experience for
Massey Ferguson
users in Essex, East
Hertfordshire, Kent,
Surrey, and Sussex.
Terms agreed by the Crawford family
with Agwood owner and Managing
Director Ian Wood, means that from
early August 2022, the three existing
Agwood depots, at Swingfield and
Linton in Kent, and Godstone in Surrey,
will continue operating under the
Agwood trading name. All the Agwood
team members based at these depots
will remain, ensuring continuity of
service for their customers. Ian Wood
continues his involvement in a senior
advisory role, and General Manager Phil
Bush has been appointed MF Dealer
Principal for the Agwood sales territory.
Family businesses
RW Crawford Agricultural Machinery
Ltd was established in 1980 by Bob
Crawford and became the Massey
Ferguson dealer for Essex in 2001.
Bob’s son Wes took over as Managing
Director in 2015, and Bob continues to
be involved with the business along with
other members of the Crawford family.
With the Agwood acquisition,
Massey Ferguson will have group
brand recognition in Essex, East
Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey, and Sussex
from four depots.
Dealer synergy
Ian Wood, who started Agwood in
1978 as a sole trader commented, “The
Crawford family has a very similar ethos
to ours, putting customers and staff at
the heart of their business, and making
them a great fit. Succession has always
been a key factor for Agwood’s future
and as the dealer network adapts
to the challenges ahead, Crawfords
has proposed a pathway forward for
Agwood Ltd and our staff. With AGCO’s
strategy for brand separation, the
Crawfords head office in Essex will work
alongside our depot teams, continuing
to provide the high level of support you
have enjoyed from Agwood Ltd over
many years.
Massey Ferguson National Sales and
Business Manager for the UK and Ireland,
William Judge says that the acquisition
will bring benefits for the brand as well
as for customers. “RW Crawford and
its team have continued to grow as an
AGCO dealer which performs as an
industry leader for Massey Ferguson.
Similarly, with Agwood’s we have always
had a strong and trusted business
partner with an excellent reputation for
sales and service. Bringing these two
groups together under the Crawfords
management will put Massey Ferguson
in a strong and stable position to ensure
that our customers get the best customer
care long into the future.”
Customer benefits
Wes Crawford explained that acquiring
the multibranch dealership will allow
the business to develop within AGCO’s
brand separation policy – Route 66, while
also bringing significant benefits for new
and existing customers, including a large
product stockholding and expanded
demonstration fleet.
“I have had several discussions with Ian,
and he feels the time is right to plan
his future and succession plan,” Wes
continued. “Our two businesses are staff
and customer-focused, which fits well
with both parties. We are excited to be
able to continue building on the teams’
hard work, supplying premium products
and backing them up with the very best
after-sales service.
isuzu;
pomfret’s
choice
After a positive
experience with buying
a Isuzu D-Max pick-up
from the Crawfords
depot at Charing last
year, Charles Pomfret
contacted the Kentbased
team again this
spring when an ATV
and accessories were
needed.
Charles divides his time between
working at Pomfret Bros – a longestablished
butchers shop based in
Tonbridge which has been owned by
his family for many years and managing
shooting days at the Invicta ZZ Shooting
Club which operates on an estate at
Tudeley nearby.
Charles consulted the Crawfords Isuzu
specialist Nick Axford when choosing
his pick-up. “He was very helpful. My
only concern was that the D-Max had
a 1.9-litre engine which was smaller
than several competitors, but Nick
assured me that it had plenty of power
and encouraged me to try versions
with both the automatic and manual
transmissions to see which I preferred.
They were equally impressive, but I
preferred the manual gearbox.”
The D-Max DL40 selected by Charles
shares the same engine as other
models in the line-up with 162hp and
360Nm of torque, and the double-cab
body style carries up to 1,115kg in the
rear load bed, and will tow 3,500kg.
The right choice
Charles took delivery of his truck in
September last year and travelled
17,000 miles in the first nine months.
“I like it a lot and have no doubts that I
selected the right vehicle,” he continued.
“It is used for short, local journeys but I
also travel quite extensively within the
UK, and I drove it to Switzerland and
back too.
The ride quality is excellent, and
although my average fuel consumption
is 32–35mpg; on longer journeys it
achieves up to 38mpg. That’s good for
this type of vehicle, especially when it’s
towing for so much of the time.”
Versatile load carrier
Before buying the Isuzu, Charles had a
4wd car. “I needed a vehicle with greater
carrying and towing capacity, and it
had to have plenty of ground clearance
for off-road use as I do a lot of game
shooting during the winter,” explained
Charles. “I looked at other brands and
had a few test-drives, but the latest
Isuzu D-Max appeared better thought
out and had a quality finish, and it also
came with features such as leather
seats as standard which are easy to
keep clean but comfortable.”
6
IMPRESSION
The truck’s off-road performance
has also impressed Charles. “It’s very
capable and if the ground conditions
turn slippery then selecting 4wd is quick
and easy. Low ratio 4wd can also be
selected, but the engine has so much
torque that I have only used it once – in
an extremely muddy and rutted field.”
A triple-axle 16ft flat trailer moves larger
loads between work areas and Charles
said that the Isuzu’s well-spaced gear
ratios mean it is handled easily by the
new D-Max. Lower gears with plenty
of overlap make it easy to pull away
up hill, and the engine’s high torque
means that constant speeds are easily
maintained on gradients without
frequently changing gear.
“When it’s time to upgrade the vehicle,
I will definitely purchase another Isuzu
D-Max as competitor brands don’t
come close in terms of finish and
specification, and the standard 5-year,
125,000-mile warranty is reassuring,”
stressed Charles. “I might opt for the
top-specification V-Cross version next
time - depending on the deal from
Crawfords.”
Time-consuming ground
maintenance
Most club shooting is at the weekends
but looking after the large, mainly grass
area is time-consuming so Charles
spends a lot of time at the site. For
several years he relied on a diesel rideon
mower, but this couldn’t cope with
longer grass, struggled for traction on
wet slopes and was too slow.
Deciding that an ATV would offer
greater versatility and save time, he
sought the advice of Nick Axford at
Crawfords again.
Can-Am solution
As well as cutting the grass, there are
cartridge wads and broken plastic
targets to pick-up after each shoot, and
this was an additional task which could
be carried out by a suitable ATV. Nick
suggested that a Can-Am Outlander
XU+ with a 570cc, V-twin petrol engine
would be an ideal model for Charles’
situation.
Various options for cutting the
grass were discussed, and Nick
recommended a Wessex AT-110 1.1m
trailed rotary mower powered by an
integral 12.5hp engine. A Wessex MTC-
120E trailed sweeper collector with
a 1.2m revolving brush and a 5.5hp
engine was also specified, along with a
trailed roller.
The ATV and implements arrived in April
this year, and Charles said that they
have revolutionised his groundcare
work. “The ATV is comfortable and
quick, and it’s never short of traction so
even after rain the work on slopes can
continue,” he said. “The large flotation
tyres travel over soft ground without
making ruts, and that’s important as
we set ourselves high standards for the
appearance of the shooting ground.”
Mowing and collecting
The choice of rotary mower has also
proved successful. “It leaves a smart
finish on the main, flatter areas,
but it also copes easily with longer
vegetation. High working speeds mean
that considerable time savings are
achieved compared to our previous
ride-on mower.”
The sweeper-collector is used after
each shooting event, and Charles said
that it does a thorough job and is
much quicker and easier than walking
around for hours with a barrow
collecting the debris.
our apprentices have
Crawfords are celebrating their
talented apprentices as they
graduate this month and begin
permanent roles with the company.
The hunt is now on for the next cohort of apprentices to work
with one of the UK’s leading agricultural dealerships.
After a three-year comprehensive programme, Sam Pollard
and George Fenner, two of our graduating apprentices, have
graduated to become qualified Agricultural Technicians at our
Kent and Essex depots.
The programme combines classroom and workshop
training with practical, work-based development to lay
the foundations for a successful career in the agricultural
industry.
Over the past few years, Crawfords Agricultural apprentice
Technicians have come from several educational
backgrounds including school leavers, university and college
graduates, even those already in employment looking for a
career change.
Laura Crawford, Group HR Manager at Crawfords said:
“We are passionate about supporting our apprentices to
fully equip them with the knowledge, skills and experience
required to succeed in their role at Crawfords. No prior
experience is necessary, and we encourage anyone
interested in kick-starting their career with Crawfords to get
in touch.”
massey on stud farm
An Essex-based
family farming and
contracting business
which specialises in
spray applications and
baling, relies on a fleet
of Massey Ferguson
and Fendt tractors
from RW Crawford.
Trading as Stud Farm Contracting, the
operation is owned by the Kruse family,
and it is managed by Charlie Kruse and
his brother Alastair.
General contracting
A stubble-to-stubble contract-farming
service is provided for local farms and
all field work operations are offered.
Most work is within a 20-mile radius of
the base. Alastair is a very experienced
sprayer operator, and he provides a
specialist spraying service for farms in
the area, and Charlie looks after a rapidly
expanding baling operation - making
600ha of hay and haylage bales each
year for livestock and equine use, as well
as up to 54,000 straw bales - most of
which are biomass for a power station.
Approximately 800ha of grass is cut for
forage for a local beef enterprise, and the
brothers work with another contractor
who chops and loads the crop with a selfpropelled
forage harvester.
Brands from Crawfords
dominate fleet
The machinery fleet is impressive, and it
includes a fleet of three Massey Ferguson
tractors – a 7718S, a 7726S and an
8740S, and three Fendts – an elderly 716
which has worked 16,000 hours, a 724
which has clocked up 10,500 hours, and
a recently acquired Fendt 939. Three
additional Massey Ferguson 8S-265
tractors have also been hired for the busy
harvest period, mainly for operating the
bale chasers. “We hired three competitor
brand tractors a few years ago, but they
were so uncomfortable that we worried
that the drivers wouldn’t come back,”
commented Charlie. “We changed to
Massey Ferguson - the ride quality is far
better, and the operators love them.”
10
IMPRESSION
Massey Ferguson
“We all like Massey Ferguson tractors.
They are extremely comfortable,
efficient, and reliable, and any of our
full-time or seasonal workers can get on
them and use them. They are practical
and user-friendly, but still come with
advanced features including Isobus
which is needed for most of our larger
implements, and CVT transmissions
which improve efficiency but help
reduce operator fatigue.
For mowing, baling, and pulling the
bale chasers, CVT transmission is a big
advantage allowing the ideal speed to be
selected for the job and conditions. For
baling – the ability to increase the working
speed by just 0.5kph when conditions
allow makes a big difference to our
productivity over the course of a season.”
Stick to Crawfords
“Stick to Crawfords has become the
rule,” confirmed Alastair. “The new
depot is slightly further from us than
before, but it’s better equipped and
accommodates a larger team of
specialists so the after sales service is
better than ever. We deal mainly with
Territory Sales Manager Tim Osborne
and Sales Director Nunzio Rio when
we need to buy or hire anything, and
Service Manager Shaun Baker and
Assistant Service Manager Neal Barber
in the workshops – although it doesn’t
really matter who we speak with as
everyone on the team is so helpful.”
Operator view
Operator Andrew Neary says that he
very much likes operating the Massey
Ferguson tractors. Andrew has driven
one of the hired-in 8S-series tractors. “It
is great on the road, and it has plenty of
power for the baler,” he continued. “It
must be the most comfortable tractor
I’ve ever driven, and the cab and seat
suspension work well and ensure a
superb ride. The visibility is very good
too – I’m really impressed.”
and Hampshire, the Ktwo business
started from more humble beginnings
producing drum mowers and swath
conditioners in a barn half full of grain.
That was in 1988, but in 1990 the BJ
Spreaders business was acquired, and
Ktwo quickly developed new models
with vertical beaters which were
By 1998, the business was growing,
and Ktwo was producing 25–30
spreaders per year. However, when
a contractor asked the company to
produce trailers for him these were
added to the range. “We have always
been proud of producing machines of
excellent quality and like to think they
are as good as anything else available,”
explained Group Managing Director
Terry Kelloway. “Being familiar with
our spreader quality meant that he
regarded us as an ideal supplier for his
trailers too.”
Increased manufacturing capacity
As demand exceeded the
manufacturing capacity available at
the Buckinghamshire plant, a visit to
the Warwick Trailers factory at Shirrell
Heath in Hampshire in 2019 resulted in
an agreement for Ktwo to acquire the
site and business, allowing it to triple its
production capacity.
Within less than a year, manufacturing
of Ktwo Curve tipping and Flatbed
trailers started at the newly acquired
site alongside selected models of
Warwick Trailers, while the Haddenham
plant continued producing spreaders
and push trailers, and cut and folded
steel for trailer construction at both
locations. Some steel cutting and
folding is also contracted out to local
businesses to ensure the high demand
for Ktwo products can be met.
The Haddenham Site covers 26,000ft 2 ,
while the former Warwick Trailers plant
is 52,000ft 2 . A team of 85 people is
employed – four of who were members
of the original team when the company
started. Terry Kelloway oversees
manufacturing at both sites and there
are also production managers at both
locations. “The additional space has
allowed us to increase sales while
investing heavily to further develop our
range,” he continued.
Ktwo employs three full-time design
engineers between the two sites who
are constantly working on product
improvements as well as future additions
to the range.
Quality components
To ensure product quality, only
premium materials and components
are used. Approximately 100t of steel
is purchased each month from Tata,
including standard, high-grade and
Hardox. PTO components and most
gearboxes are from Walterscheid.
One of the biggest changes in recent
years has been a move from selling
direct to appointing a network of
dealers, and this has resulted in a
significant increase in orders. Most
dealers are multi-branch and Ktwo
provides bespoke training for sales staff
to ensure customers are recommended
the most suitable products for their
applications. Dealers book and commit
to manufacturing slots through the year,
and final specifications can be agreed
later – ensuring excellent availability.
Growing export market
The first Ktwo trailer was a 12t model,
but now the company produces large
triaxle trailers up to 3.2m wide and with
up to 70t capacity for the American
market. A growing reputation for quality
products means that the demand from
overseas markets is growing, and now 20
per cent of the trailers and spreaders are
IMPRESSION 13
egularly exported to countries including
Canada and North America, Norway,
New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland,
where they are sold through dealers.
Because demand for the spreaders is as
high as for the trailers, shipping efficiency
is improved by loading spreaders inside
the trailer bodies. The factory’s location
close to the port at Southampton is an
advantage – reducing travel distances in
the UK.
Quality trailers
The Ktwo Roadeo trailer range includes
Flatbed, Low Loader, Contractor,
Dumper, Curve Tipping (10–20t), as well
as Compact and Push (16–25t) models.
Specialist Roadeo Compact and
Push trailers have a moving floor and
hydraulic headboard to eject the load as
an alternative to tipping and have been
manufactured by Ktwo since 2013. “We
were aware of push trailers entering
the UK from European manufacturers,
and as specialist top-end products this
type of trailer suited our business. Many
of our customers are larger farms and
contractors, and we believed that push
trailers would appeal to the same users.
We designed and built our own Roadeo
Compact and Push trailers which make
up the UK’s best-selling compactor range
today,” Terry explained.
Using the push headboard to compress
the load means compactor trailers
typically carry up to 25% more material
than standard models of equivalent size.
Most are supplied for silage and apart
from the extra capacity; advantages of
the push emptying system include the
ability to operate in low sheds where
standard tipping trailers are unsuitable,
and use on uneven ground where raised
tipping trailers could be unstable.
The company’s experience is that once
customers have had Roadeo Compact
and Push trailers then they don’t buy
standard trailers again. This is because
they are just as versatile as traditional
trailers and, as well as using them for
cereals, silage, and root crops, they
are ideal for woodchip, compost, and
aggregates where the ability to compress
and pack in more material improves
transport efficiency.
Terry commented that although the
move from standard tipping trailers
to push models has been gradual,
the change to large, flotation tyres is
happening more quickly. “Only a few
years ago most trailers had super-single
wheels and tyres, but now nine out
of 10 orders specify flotation options.
They cost more, but benefits include
reduced soil compaction and damage,
and fuel savings as they are easier to
pull. Steering axles are also becoming
more popular as they protect the tyres
by reducing scrubbing and extend the
working life.
“Suspension systems – active and
passive are also in demand, and it’s easy
to incorporate accurate load weighing
technology – especially for the push-off
trailers.”
“Manure has become a valuable resource
- partly due to the high cost of artificial
fertiliser but also because soil health is a
priority. This means that more farmers
are investing in spreaders capable of
precision applications, and sales of disc
spreaders are increasing. Farms are
also investing in their own spreaders
rather than relying on contractors which
gives them the flexibility to spread when
conditions are optimal, and to apply
manure as a light dressing when nutrients
are needed,” explained Terry.
Crawfords took on the Ktwo franchise in
June last year, although longer lead times
meant that 2022 is the first year that
products have been fully available. “Being
able to bring potential customers to the
New ultra-compact
rough terrain
telehandler
The Ultra-compact
Manitou Telehandler
range has been
consciously designed
to allow ease of use
and transportation.
Manitou Group has launched a new
ultra-compact rough terrain telehandler
aimed at the agriculture, construction,
and landscaping sectors.
While Manitou already has a large
customer base in the agriculture and
construction sectors, the company has
expressed that it wanted to develop
a model suitable for those in the
landscaping sector, allowing operators
to transport it on a road trailer hooked
up to their vehicle.
The new Ultra Light Manitou (ULM)
model has a transportable weight of
less than 3 tonnes, which can be loaded
onto a 3,500kg total capacity trailer.
The ULM Telehandler was designed
at Manitou’s Laillé production site,
which is home to a purpose-built R&D
centre dedicated to ‘super compact’
telehandlers.
The ULM’s dimensions are among
the front runners of the compact
Telehandler market, offering a width
of 1.49m and a height of 1.92m. The
model comes in two versions (ULM
412 H and ULM 415 H) with lifting
capacities of 1.25 tonne and 1.5 tonne,
respectively, and a lifting height of 4.3m,
depending on options.
The new ULM range also features
four-wheel drive with an oscillating
rear axle and 3 steering modes. A
wide range of tyres are available
that customers can choose from,
along with a desirable high ground
clearance of 29cm.
Simultaneous boom movements
-The flow sharing distributor enhances
simultaneous hydraulic movements for
efficient work. You choose to do one or
several movements at the same time
for more precision.
Inching function - This feature
speeds up movement of the boom
while limiting the forward speed of the
machine. It is particularly useful for bale
stacking or pallet handling.
Electronic carriage compensation
system - By replacing the hydraulic
compensation with an electronic
compensation, we improve visibility at
the rear of the machine (by removing
the cylinder). This also reduces
its weight, thus optimizing fuel
consumption.
Driving assistance - A set of pop-ups
informs the operator in real time about
the use of the machine.
Joystick on floating armrest - Exclusive
to Manitou, the JSM allows you to control
all movements in complete safety and
without fatigue, with just one hand. You
always keep one hand on the steering
wheel for total control of your machine.
Optimal visibility - The roof window is
made of polycarbonate, a transparent
and very resistant material that meets
the FOPS standards (protection against
falling objects). The hoses are well
protected inside the boom for clear
visibility on the right side.
Quick and easy maintenance
Service intervals and error codes are
displayed on the clear digital dashboard
display. A large opening engine bonnet
on the side of the machine allows easy
access to the main components, while a
hatch at the front of the radiators allows
straw and dust to be removed easily.
The fuel and hydraulic oil tanks are
easily accessible and clearly identified
and the battery is easily accessible,
located just under the cab.
Cost of ownership
Cost of ownership was a major part
of the design process, a number of
features were built in to address this
key matter. The Stop & Start feature
reduces fuel consumption, co2
emissions, the number of recorded
engine hours and noise pollution by
automatically stopping the engine when
the machine is stationary. Engine restart
is automated without turning the key.
THE ALL NEW Q-SERIES
FROM vALTRA
Valtra’s 5th
generation model
line-up now
includes an entirely
new series that
sits between the
popular T and S
Series.
The Q Series tractor, designed,
engineered, and manufactured in
Finland, is ideal for large farms and
contractors looking for performance
and integrated smart technology in the
230-305 HP range. The Q Series has
the power, intelligence, and versatility
to maximise productivity while driving
down costs for large farms and
contractors by combining industryleading
design, high quality components
and finishing, and outstanding
aftersales support.
The Q Series is an easy-to-use,
intelligent machine, designed for
professionals, allowing customers to
perform any farming or contracting task
and handle any implement with ease
and efficiency thanks to the credible
7.4 litre AGCO Power engine and the
industry-leading Q Series AGCO CVT
transmission. The large comfortable
cab with excellent visibility, excellent
suspension, and the award-winning
SmartTouch user interface provides
outstanding operator comfort.
The Q Series has a very low total
cost of ownership. Precision farming
solutions that are simple to use, has a
powerful, robust, and reliable design,
and provides excellent customer support
allowing Q customers to maximise their
performance and ensure fuel efficiency,
working hour efficiencies, and reduced
inputs. This is a winning combination that
will provide the best tractor experience
available in this horsepower range.
The 7.4 litre engine has the largest
displacement in the market for a tractor of
this size, ensuring dependability and fuel
efficiency. Maximum power is available
at low engine speeds of 1850 rpm, and
maximum torque is consistent between
1000 and 1500 rpm. The Q Series’ high
power and torque are easily generated by
the long stroke engine. Valtra’s EcoPower
principle has been applied to the entire Q
Series range, lowering fuel consumption
even further. Only 1500 rpm is required to
reach top speed.
The transmission is simple to use. The
electronic transmission management
of the Q Series automatically selects
the lowest possible engine revs for the
work to maintain the lowest possible
fuel consumption, and distributes
power accordingly to the hydraulics,
PTO, or transmission. The driver simply
adjusts the settings to suit the driver
or task at hand. Droop control allows
the operator to change the tractor’s
behaviour for even more economical or
intensive operation, saving either fuel or
time, depending on the customer’s costsaving
preferences.
With a weight of 9.2 tonnes, the Q is
neither too light nor too heavy and
protects soil from compaction. The
maximum gross weight is 16 tonnes,
which ensures a high payload and
guarantees that the load is always
transported legally.
The Q Series is small in size, with a low
total height and a long wheelbase. As
a result, the centre of gravity is low,
making the Q extremely stable. The
Aires Suspension, in conjunction with
the long wheelbase, increases the
tractor’s pulling force and reduces
power hopping. Because air suspension
has a faster reaction time than industry
standard hydraulic suspension, it
improves ground grip.
At road speeds, power is almost entirely
mechanically transmitted, resulting in
quick and smooth acceleration. The cab
and front axle are both air-suspended
and perfectly synchronised to ensure
a smooth ride in any environment and
temperature, whether harvesting on a
hot summer day or clearing snow from
the roads in winter.
for a previous AGCO dealer until
2013, looking after Massey Ferguson
machines,” he explained. “I was the
2010 Massey Ferguson Technician of
the Year, and now the other engineers
often ask my advice when dealing with
complex issues on older models.“
It’s a great industry to work in and this is
a very good dealer to work for, and I’m
certain that the Crawfords strategy of
training new engineers as apprentices is
the right way forward.”
New role
Lucy Beale has a combined product
support and trainee sales role. She
recently joined the Writtle-based
team and works with Product Support
Specialists Dean Chaplin and James
Sharp. “I’m keen to pursue a career in
agriculture, and particularly agricultural
mechanisation,” she explained. “When
I saw the role advertised, I asked my
There is definitely a very good
relationship between this dealer
and its customers. What I like
about the job is that we get to
know the customers so well –
business owners, machinery
operators, and their farms.
father’s advice. He’s a farm manager
and he confirmed that Crawfords has
an excellent reputation in the industry,
so I applied. Three weeks in; I’m already
very much part of the team and learning
fast. I will be gaining experience in each
department within the new Crawfords
Academy, which will allow me to find
which product area and role suits me
best.”
Finance controller
Russell Oliver is the Group Finance
Controller. The finance team of seven
people based at Writtle looks after
accounts for all the depots. “We
handle payments to suppliers as well
as payments from customers,” he
explained. “No-one likes paying bills, but
we have a strong credit control function
with few long-standing debts, and that
demonstrates that there is strong
customer satisfaction in terms of the
goods and services we have supplied.”
Isuzu Service
Ryan Murton is one of two Isuzu and
Can-Am specialist engineers at Writtle.
“I worked with many other vehicle
brands for main dealers before starting
at Crawfords three years ago,” he
explained. “I can’t fault Crawfords in
terms of investment in its brands to
ensure customers receive the best
service, and this is the first place I
have worked where servicing and
repairs is genuinely regarded as more
important than sales. There is a close
relationship between the dealer team
and customers – which helps when
breakdowns or faults occur as owners
remain far more relaxed. They know
that everything will be done to find a
solution as quickly as possible.”
Still built on service
Service Director Malcolm Baker joined
Bob Crawford in his machinery sales
venture only six months after the
business started in 1980. He remains
responsible for the service departments
at all the depots. “The business is only
ever as good as its staff,” he stressed.
“We are very lucky holding franchises
for the best brands in the industry, and
that’s due to our customers, and the
Crawfords teams who look after them
so well. The family feeling has been
retained while building this successful
business which means team members
feel valued and involved.”
“The agricultural industry is still about
people dealing with people and I’m
pleased that the Crawfords apprentice
scheme is doing so well. Providing
excellent training while at the same time
instilling the Crawford values of going
the extra mile, building relationships
and looking after the customers, will
ensure business growth and success
continues.”
Warranty administrator
Amy Phythian looks after warranty
claims for all the brands and from all
the Crawfords depots, which involves
working closely with the workshop
teams as well as suppliers.
“I’m busy throughout the year, but
because most warranty repairs are
carried out when farms and our
workshop teams are at their busiest – I
tend to receive claims for processing
in large batches later when technicians
have the time to catch up. The priority is
always solving the problem and getting
the machine working first.”
Service Manager
Service Manager Shaun Baker joined
the Crawfords team when he left
school – 22 years ago. He started in
the workshop, specialising in Massey
Ferguson, and progressed to his current
role seven years ago. “Our priority is
always keeping machines working – that
is what we are here for,” he explained.
“We have an honest and hard-working
team of engineers, and they all get on
well with our customers. We enjoy great
customer loyalty, and many calls that I
take are from farmers who I visited in
my service van many years ago.”
“We are always looking for new people
to join our team. Crawfords offers great
career opportunities in a relatively
stable industry and in roles that most
people enjoy.”
Marketing
A familiar face at all the Crawfords
events – Hannah Kelsey is Group
Marketing Manager. She joined
Crawfords nine years ago after leaving
college. “My first role was very general,
and none of us knew how it might
develop,” she admits. “It was more
of a sales administration role - with
occasional marketing thrown in. There
was no need for a full-time Marketing
Manager at that time.”
Hannah had been very active within
the Essex Young Farmers Clubs
organisation, and her experience
helped when planning public events for
the dealer.
Hannah said that the dealer’s excellent
customer service is the easiest thing to
sell. “It’s always the priority and when
customers start dealing with us, they
quickly realise that,” she added. “It’s part
of the culture and comes so naturally
to everyone who works here. The
Crawfords family values everyone in the
team, and that’s something customers
notice and appreciate too.”
Sales Director
Nunzio Rio is responsible for sales from
all the depots, but he works primarily
with the Essex and Kent sales teams.
“In theory I just look after sales, but
because we all work together and
share similar values, there is inevitably
a crossover with aftersales too,” he
explained. “I joined Crawfords 21 years
ago and can honestly say that there
hasn’t been a day that I haven’t wanted
to come to work. I wouldn’t swap any
of the brands we represent, and as
sales teams I think we are fortunate
to be able to recommend and supply
equipment that we know is the best in
the industry.”
Product demonstrator
Dean Chaplin joined Crawfords in 2008
and is based at Writtle although he also
provides demonstration support for
other depots. He works with Product
Demonstrator, James Sharp.
“We demonstrate all the brands, and
work closely with the sales teams,”
Dean explained. “We also help
customers optimise the performance
and efficiency of their new machines
by visiting after delivery and explaining
advanced features available through the
latest smart farming technology, such as
FendtONE. It’s enjoyable spending time
with operators and explaining how to
optimise the performance, and they are
often amazed at what the new systems
can do.”
“AGCOConnect telematics is a relatively
recent addition, and we explain the
benefits available and encourage
owners to sign up for the service.
There is often the potential to improve
working efficiencies, while allowing our
teams to access performance data can
help reduce downtime through remote
fault diagnostics. There are many
benefits.”
Territory sales Manager
Tom Kerr and Tim Osborne are Territory
Sales Managers based at Writtle. They
work with Nunzio Rio looking after
customers in the Essex trading area.
“We have a vast array of customers
each to look after, and our role is
keeping in touch and supporting them
while providing solutions when new
or used machinery is needed,” Tom
said. “Increasingly, farmers want more
efficient machinery with lower costs
of operation and ownership. We offer
premium brands which are known for
their quality, our customers like the
fact that Bob and Wes Crawford remain
heavily involved in the business.”
Tom said that having access to precision
farming specialists, Dean Chaplin and
James Sharp is seen as a big advantage
by customers. “It’s a very specialised
area and the technology has evolved
quickly, so knowing that we have
experts available to provide advice by
phone or on-site is reassuring. We sell
machines knowing that our customers
will be looked after well – it’s all about
dealing with people.”
farmer
upgrade to
Fendt
David has managed the
700ha Perching Manor
Farm at Fulking in the
South Downs National Park
for 13 years. The operation
includes 240ha of arable
cropping plus grass grazing
for a 100-head single
suckler herd of Angus x
Limousin cattle and up to
600 sheep.
Excellent local back-up
Crawfords is a relatively new dealer
in the area but, when the farm’s
existing Amazone sprayer was due
for replacement, David contacted the
team. “They couldn’t have been more
helpful,” he stressed. “We agreed a
suitable specification and I placed the
order. There was very little support
needed after delivery, but the few
times that I contacted the dealer
there was always someone available.
I was very impressed. In the past I
have used smaller local dealers who
looked after me well, but it was quickly
obvious that the larger Crawfords
business with four depots and a
team of product specialists offered
advantages. We get so few good
spraying days due to the weather, and
knowing excellent back-up is available
is essential.”
A neighbouring farmer and contractor
suggested that a Fendt tractor
might suit the farm. “I had always
believed that a Fendt would be too
expensive to justify but we needed
a suitable tractor, so I requested the
demonstration.”
FendtONE advantage
The Fendt 724 Vario supplied was the
latest Gen 6 version with a FendtONE
user interface, and it immediately
impressed with its compact size and
versatility as well as the exceptional
cab comfort. “It ticked all the boxes
for me, with plenty of power for
working the steep slopes, but also
being light and manoeuvrable,” David
explained. After the demonstration we
were convinced that it was the right
tractor, so the Crawfords Area Sales
Representative worked out a price for
a tractor which was due into stock. An
attractive finance deal meant it was
just within our budget, so we placed
the order.”
CenterPoint RTX guidance is used,
which provides adequate precision
for drilling, then subsequent field
operations rely on the tramlines
created. The FendtONE operator
interface allows guidance maps to be
displayed on either of the two large
touch terminals, or on the dashboard
display. “I love the FendtONE concept
– it’s easy to use and incredibly
versatile,” continued David. “The
potential is limitless, but that means
there is a lot to learn to get the best
from it and I’m still finding out what
it can do four months after taking
delivery.”
Quick and convenient set-up
One of the most useful features is an
implement list stored on the system,
along with the settings which were
last used. “For me – doing as much as
I can on my own it’s a big help and it
saves a lot of time. When an Isobuscompatible
implement is connected,
the settings load up automatically and
if it has been used previously on the
tractor then all my preferred settings
are automatically applied.
Tractor knows best
The Fendt 724 Vario is the farm’s
first with continuously variable
transmission. David describes
himself as a stick and throttle tractor
operator, so accepting that the tractor
knows best regarding the engine
speed and transmission ratio took a
while. “The TMS system is superb. On
the road, the engine just seems to be
ticking over even at maximum speed,
and for subsoiling where I would
select engine revs of 1,800–1,900rpm,
the TMS system easily maintained
the set operating speed, but at much
lower revs. After using other tractor
brands for more than 30 years, now
that I have experienced the Fendt I
wouldn’t want to go back.”
“After using previous tractors for a
few years I’ve always felt the need to
update them, but I’m confident that
in 10 years’ time I will still be just as
enthusiastic about the Fendt 724 as I
am now.”
Excellent dealer
Regarding his experience dealing
with the Crawfords team, David said
he remains extremely impressed.
“When I’ve needed advice, Product
Demonstrator Tom Power has been
excellent. He’s new to the role but
has always provided a solution. These
days, having technical specialists is
essential to help customers get the
best from the latest machinery and
clearly Crawfords is happy to invest
which gives me reassurance for the
future. When I’m looking for more
new machinery, I will consult the
Billingshurst depot team again.”
When I borrowed the
Fendt 700 Vario-series
demonstrator from
the local Crawfords
Billingshurst depot I
didn’t expect to buy it,
but within 30 minutes of
it arriving on the farm I
just didn’t want to give
it back.
-
David Ellin, Sussex Farmer
More comfort and less tiring
“It’s obvious that Fendt thought
carefully about users when designing
the 724 Vario, and the new FendtONE
controls. It cost a little more than
other tractors we considered, but I
remain very pleased with our decision
to buy it. It’s more comfortable and
less tiring to operate during long
working days and managing the farm
will be easier. Each job is automatically
recorded by the FendtONE system
which will help with our environmental
activities, and we will have no
problems as we move towards
adopting variable-rate seeding in
future years.
