Exceptional Autumn sales driven by the commercial store trade
Following a very successful year for the Charolais breed we entered the festive period hoping for as near a normal Christmas and
New Year as possible so we could all enjoy time with our family, some of who we have not seen for a long time. However, another
new variant of Covid came along to put pay to a lot of people’s plans but I hope you all managed to make the best of this situation
and have a well-deserved break.
Hopefully the spring sales can carry on from the huge success of the autumn sales.
AUTUMN SALES
Stirling
It was a long wait to get back to a normal show and sale but it was well worth waiting for.
The breed achieved an all-time record average of £8,120 which was up £1,495 on the year with 14 bulls selling for 10,000gns and
above.
Three of these sold for 20,000gns and above.
The champion and top price was Major D F W H & N R Walter of Balthayock, with Balthayock Ranger which sold for a top price on
the day of 28,000gns.
Goldies Romeo sold for 26,000gns and Balthayock Rampage sold for 25,000gns.
To round off a great few days, the breed saw an exceptional production sale of heifers packed with a lot of the breed’s strongest
female lines consigned from the J W Millar, Lochend herd.
Iain has dedicated his life to the Charolais breed and the heifers were full of breed character and had the depth of back breeding to
go with it.
The 17 heifers sold to a top of 12,000gns and averaged 5,658gns and sold to both established and new herds showing the high
regard the Lochend herd is held in.
This was a sale that won’t be forgotten and the continued confidence and ever-growing demand for Charolais sired suckled calves
was clearly evident to see.
Swatragh
The sale was held in Swatragh Market on the 5 November and was a resounding success.
This was extremely pleasing for all our Northern Ireland members as they have undoubtably been hit the hardest with Brexit making
Stirling a near impossibility for them to attend to market their bulls.
31 bulls sold to an average of £4,515 and an 86% clearance rate.
2 females sold to an average of £4,357.50.
The Champion on the day, and I believe a Northern Ireland record price of 15,000gns, was the Junior Champion and the Reserve
Overall Champion from Balmoral show Stranagone Reagon from R McWilliams.
The Reserve Champion was Tullygarley Roscoe from J K Currie selling for 9,400gns.
A huge well done to all of the Northern Ireland members for making this such a great sale.
Welshpool
This was a very solid but selective sale.
31 bulls sold to an average of £4,875 with a clearance rate of 65%.
9 females sold to an average of £2,794.
The top price was from our President Gareth Roberts of Roberts and Jones Montgomery herd with Montgomery Regal selling for
8,000gns.
The Champion on the day was Hendy Rasputin from J A W Rees.
The Reserve Champion was Sportsmans Roman from Boden & Davies.
White Gold Sale
21 January 2022 will see a return to a stand-alone female sale at H & H Carlisle.
This will be the first sale of its kind since the once very successful Christmas Cracker Sale also held at H & H.
The ever-increasing demand for high quality Charolais females from both new breeders and established herds looking for proven
genetics saw the clear need for this White Gold sale.
We are very excited to have a quality line up of females forwarded from:
Tweeddale 8, Maerdy 6, Trefaldwyn 5, Burradon 5, Wissington 4, Elrick 2, Elgin 2, Mornity 2, Tophill 1 and Kelly’s 1.
We hope this sale will be a popular and permanent fixture on the Charolais calendar for years to come.
Congress 2022
The World Charolais Congress 2022 is due to be held from the 7 to 18 July and we are extremely privileged to be hosting it here in
the UK.
All of the initial planning is now complete and booking forms have been sent to delegates.
The modern Charolais is ideal for today’s marketplace and this will be a great chance to showcase to the world the exceptional cattle
we produce in this country.
Combining this with the spectacular scenery and our great hospitality this should be the making of a very successful Congress,
providing Covid does not spoil it for everyone.
NI animal movements
As you will all be aware, since Brexit the movement of stock form NI to GB and GB to NI is now extremely difficult, and the current
rules are now not practical or economical.
Our NI members are now unable to purchase or sell quality bulls and females in GB without extreme financial hardship.
We are working very closely with the NBA and will do everything we can to try to get this situation resolved.
Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the office staff
who have adapted during Covid to strive and give our members the best service
possible. I know how much extra work they have all put in to keep the office running
smoothly.
I would also like to thank my fellow council members for all they do in helping to
drive the breed forward in the right direction. They all give up a lot of time and their
efforts are greatly appreciated.
Thank you also to all of the regional Charolais clubs for all they do throughout the
year in promoting the breed at local events.
Lastly and most definitely not least, a huge thank you to all of the commercial
farmers who have purchased Charolais bulls throughout the year. As a Society we
want to work as closely as we can with you all to produce the type of bulls that can
work in any system, in any part of the country.
I want to wish you all the best for 2022 and I hope to meet up with as many of you
as possible at shows and sales, Covid permitting.
Here is to another successful year for the breed and all its members.
Charolais – the breed that improves all breeds.
Stirling October
Ranger drives
the top price at
Stirling
Judge Matthew Milne
In a long-awaited return to form, the
annual October bull show and sale at
United Auctions, Stirling took place
over the course of Monday 18 to
Tuesday 19 October 2021. Charolais
animals had a particularly strong
showing, with a total of 63 bulls and 16
females finding new homes. The bull
sale attained a top price of 28,000gns
with a clearance rate of 75% and an
average price of £8,120 – up £1,493 on
the previous year. The females sold for
a top price of 12,000gns, with an 89%
clearance and an average of £6,169.
Overall, 14 bulls and 2 females sold
for 10,000gns and above, and 31 bulls
and 6 females reached prices between
5,000gns and 9,000gns.
The star of the show, reaching an
incredible price of 28,000gns, was
the Supreme & Junior Champion
BALTHAYOCK RANGER. This impressive
young bull is from the well-established
herd of Major D F W H & N R Walter
of Balthayock, Perth, and boasts other
prize-winners in his heritage. Ranger
was sired by Balthayock Imp, who
achieved the titles of Breed Champion
and Interbreed Champion at the Royal
Highland Show in 2015. Meanwhile his
dam, Balthayock Melissa (a daughter
of Balthayock Ferdinand), also secured
a class prize at the same event in the
past. Ranger will be making his way
over to his new herd in Knighton,
Powys, under the care of winning
bidder V Corbett from the well-known
Teme herd.
Hot on Ranger’s tail was the Reserve
Supreme & Reserve Junior Champion,
GOLDIES ROMEO, who sold for
26,000gns. Romeo was bred by H
Goldie of Ruthwell, Dumfries and was
sired by the extremely easy-calving
Gretnahouse Heman, who sold for
15,000gns at Stirling in 2013. His
dam is Goldies Marion, a daughter of
Goldies Formidable. This charming
young 16-month-old will be making the
long journey to Highfields Park Farm in
Withyham, East Sussex.
The final bull to break the 20,000gns
threshold was class winner
BALTHAYOCK RAMPAGE, also from
the herd of Major D F W H & N R
Walter. The hammer came down for
this Balthayock
Ferdinand-sired
18-month-old
at 25,000gns.
Rampage was born
to the easy-calving
Balthayock Unwary,
a daughter of
Balthayock Raffles.
Taking Rampage
home is J Price of
Staunton-on-Wye,
Herefordshire.
The next highest
price of the day
was secured by
ELRICK RABBI, at
16,000gns. Rabbi is
from the herd of M
Top price at 28,000gns Balthayock Ranger
J Massie of Auchnagatt, Ellon, and was
sired by the incredibly popular easycalver
Maerdy Gouverneur. His dam
is Elrick Lily, a daughter of historical
Supreme Champion Thrunton Fearless.
Winning the bid this time was T Smith
& Son, who will be taking Rabbi back to
their herd in Alford, Aberdeenshire.
Also reaching a final price of
16,000gns was another offering from
the Balthayock herd, BALTHAYOCK
RAMBO. This young 15-month-old
has an impressive lineage behind
him, having been sired by the easy
calving Balthayock Nevada. His dam,
Balthayock Mimosa, is a daughter of
Ugie Echo, who was Champion at Perth
in 2014. Rambo is sure to settle in
Goldies Romeo at 26,000gns
GLENERICHT RICKSEN, a 16-month-old
from the herd of W K & P Drysdale of
Middle Drimmie, Blairgowrie, attained
the next highest price of 14,000gns.
Ricksen was born to Glenericht
Melrose, a daughter of 2014’s Junior
Male Champion – Maerdy Hwre. His
sire is Glenericht Mecca, who boasts a
tremendous calving ease EBV of +31.4.
Ricksen will be journeying to Coalville,
Leicestershire, to the farm of new
owner C Jessop.
Also from the Glenericht herd was the
bull securing the next highest price of
12,000gns: GLENERICHT RYDER. This
charming 17-month-old was sired by
the easy-calving Glenericht Limpet,
and is out of Glenericht Jewel – a
daughter of the ever-popular Clyth
Diplomat. Ryder’s lucky new owners
are C Smeaton & Sons, who will
be introducing him to their herd in
Inverarity, Angus.
The final bull to surpass 10,000gns was
18-month-old ELGIN ROYALE from R A
Milne’s herd in Lhanbryde, Elgin, who
reached a final price of 11,000gns.
Royale was sired by Caylers Noah, and
born to Elgin Jane, a Caylers Gladiator
daughter who was Junior Female
Champion at the Royal Highland Show
in 2015. Royale will be making the trip
to Biggar, Lanarkshire, to the farm of
winning bidder F Smith.
A total of six bulls all sold for the next
highest prices of the day of 10,000gns,
the first of which was Senior Champion
PANMURE ROBERTO. This 19-monthold
was bred by J M Cant & Partners of
Arbroath, Angus, and was sired by the
12,000gns Elrick Jester. Roberto’s dam
is Panmure Molly, a daughter of the
prizewinning Thrunton Firecracker. Like
Royale, Roberto will also be journeying
to Biggar in Lanarkshire, this time to
the farm of J Hyslop & Sons.
Next to sell for 10,000gns was Reserve
Intermediate Champion, WESTCARSE
RADAR. Radar was bred by J H Christie
of Stirling, and offered for sale by R
& N Barclay of Insch, Aberdeenshire,
and boasts a notable heritage. Radar
was sired by popular easy-calver
Gretnahouse Ming, and was born to
Westcarse Candace, a daughter of the
28,000gns Farleycopse Turbo. Winning
the bid was A H Fisher, who will be
introducing Radar to their herd in
Stranraer, Wigtown.
The third bull to reach 10,000gns
was THRUNTON RINGMASTER, a
17-month-old from the well-known
herd of J H C Campbell & Sons in
Thrunton, Alnwick. Ringmaster was
born to a daughter of the 26,000gns
Balmyle Dickler, Thrunton Juniper,
and his sire is the popular 28,000gns
Maerdy Jerusalem. This young lad will
be making the trip to Kincraigie Farms
in Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire.
CHESHAM ROBUST was the next bull to
secure a price of 10,000gns. Bred by B
Harman of Chesham, Buckinghamshire,
this strapping young bull boasts a
calving ease EBV of +11.7 and some
well-known names in his lineage.
Robust’s sire is the popular easy-calver
Balthayock Musketeer, and his dam
is Chesham Lena, a daughter of the
18,000gns Thrunton Fairfax. Taking
Robust home to Latheron, Caithness, is
winning bidder S Sinclair.
The fifth bull to reach 10,000gns was
GLENERICHT REGGIE, another from the
herd of W K & P Drysdale and a brother
to the 12,000gns Glenericht Ryder.
Like his brother, this 17-month-old was
also sired by Glenericht Limpet, and he
was born to another Clyth Diplomat
daughter: Glenericht Hayley. Winning
the bid for this young charmer was J
Wight & Sons of Biggar, Lanarkshire.
The hammer came down at 10,000gns
for the final time for BALTHAYOCK
RORY, another impressive young
lad from the herd of D F W H & N R
Walter. At only 15 months old, Rory
was amongst the youngest of the bulls
offered for sale, however his lineage
indicates great potential. Rory was
sired by the 11,000gns Gretnahouse
Lunar, and his dam is Balthayock
Glenericht Ricksen at 14,000gns Glenericht Ryder at 12,000gns Elgin Royale at 11,000gns
winning bidders C & K Malone, who
will be taking her home to Cardenden,
Selling for the next highest price of
10,000gns was LOCHEND PAWNEE,
stranger to success, having earned the
titles of Reserve Supreme & Junior
Balmoral Show - Judge Raymond Irvine
The long wait for the return of
Northern Ireland’s largest agricultural
event, the Balmoral Show, was finally
over. The event was held over the
course of Wednesday 22 to Saturday
25 September 2021 after being
cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Charolais animals had a strong
showing in their classes on Wednesday
afternoon, highlighting some of the
best the breed has to offer.
Gretnahouse Pouncer Reserve supreme champion
The prestigious title of British
Charolais Breed Reserve Supreme
Champion was secured by 23-monthold
GRETNAHOUSE POUNCER. This
impressive bull was shown by first-time
exhibitor H Heron of Newtownards, Co.
Down, who had purchased him from
breeder the late A Houston at Carlisle
in May 2021. Pouncer was sired by the
popular Westcarse Jimmy, and was
born to Gretnahouse Japan, a daughter
of Balthayock Gladiator.
Reserve to Pouncer was the day’s
Junior Champion, STRANAGONE
REAGAN. This strapping 18-monthold
was bred and exhibited by
R McWilliams of Maghera, Co.
Londonderry. He was born to
Falleninch Fanna, a daughter of Prime
Colombo, and sired by Stranagone
Jones.
Standing in reserve to Reagan for
the title of British Charolais Junior
Champion was the stunning heifer
SYDENVILLE RASPBERRY. Raspberry
was bred and shown by another
first-time exhibitor at Balmoral, G
Hadnett of Armagh, Co. Armagh. This
19-month-old is out of Brigadoon
Imeria, a daughter of popular Irish
bull Royal Capitan, and was sired by
Newhouse Maxamus.
was purchased by Mr Heron in October
2019 from breeder J H C Campbell, and
is proving to be an excellent asset. She
was shown with her charming heifer
calf, Loughriscouse Savina, who is sure
to perform well for Mr Heron in the
future. Nefertiti was born to Thrunton
Flamenco, a Newhouse Bigal daughter,
and her sire is Maerdy Jerusalem.
When it comes to raising the profit margin, AHDB’s campaign
‘Maternal Matters’ brings the focus away from carcase traits
and back to the maternal performance of the suckler cow.
The importance of maternal characteristics is underestimated
in the English suckler herd with only 82% of suckler cows
producing a calf each year.
An economic study suggests that fertility is five times more
important than growth rate and ten times more important than
carcase quality to the suckler producer. So, are we missing a
trick here in the UK?
AHDB’s new Maternal Matters campaign is focused on increasing
the use of good maternal genetics within the English suckler
herd. Whilst also informing producers of the management and
selection practices required to enable greater cow lifetime
reproductive performance and profitability through careful
heifer breeding and development. Over the next two years,
we’ll cover:
• KPI’s and suckler profit margins
• Choosing breeding stock to produce female replacements
• Managing heifers to successfully calve at two
• Choosing bulls for replacement heifers
• Calving heifers
• Post-calving heifer management
You can’t manage what you don’t measure
Knowing what to measure, so that management decisions can
easily be made, can sometimes be confusing. So the first part
of ‘Maternal Matters’ looks at herd key performance indicators
(KPI’s)
Focusing on specific maternal KPI’s could increase the
performance and output of your suckler herd. Using KPI’s
allows you to benchmark against your own farms performance
year on year as well as benchmarking against other producers
performance to highlight areas of strength and weakness.
What KPIs should you consider monitoring and how are they
calculated?
1. Cost of Production (COP) per calf weaned
Knowing your COP allows you to make informed marketing
and business decisions. An accurately calculated COP can also
be used to benchmark yourself against similar enterprises and
identify areas where your spending/income may be above/
below average.
COP can be calculated using the AHDB KPI Express tool (see
farmbusinessreview.ahdb.org.uk) and requires knowledge of
business income and expenditure.
2. Age at first calving
Reducing age at first calving is a proven and effective way
of reducing COP and increasing cow lifetime performance.
Replacements account for 8.5% of COP, so can we really afford
not to calve them at two? Aim for between 22 and 26 months
for maximum efficiency.
While there are many factors contributing to successfully
calving at two, hitting target bulling weights is essential to
ensure puberty is reached early enough and heifers calve easily.
Nutrition and selecting for positive 200-day and 400-day growth
can be achieved using estimated breeding values (EBVs).
3. Cow herd efficiency
Cow herd efficiency assesses the relationship between cow
weight and calf output. It is linked to profitability and reflects
herd fertility, health, genetics, feed and management.
To calculate you need an average liveweight of calves at
weaning, an average liveweight of females to the bull, and your
average age at weaning (in months). A cow should wean 40–
60% of her liveweight in calf.
Pay close attention to selecting female replacements. Keeping
records of their mothers ability will make selection easier.
Bull choice to breed replacements from is also vital. Milk EBV,
Mature Cow weight EBV and 200 growth EBV are all important,
whilst always looking for easy calving.
4. Females calved in first six-weeks
A tight calving block indicates good fertility and makes
management easier resulting in calves that are more consistent
at weaning, easier to market, and can be effectively managed
in a block. The aim is for over 65% to calve within the six-week
window, with anything above 80% being excellent.
The feeding, grouping, and general management of cattle all
have a huge impact on fertility. The egg that is fertilised at
bulling is matured in the cow before she calves, so nutrition
pre-calving is as important as post-calving. Body condition score
is a good indicator of energy status and ask your vet to take
blood samples if you feel mineral deficiency may be an issue.
Minimise stress around bulling and in the following weeks to
improve conception rates, and consider keeping heifers in a
separate management group right through to
second calving.
both through genetics and nutrition will make the most of those
early feed conversion rates. Good feed quality is key, be that
grass or forage. This applies not only to the cow but to the calf
as well, as by four-months old, only half its feed requirements
are met by milk.
To calculate all of the KPIs mentioned in this article and to see
how your farm compares, visit the AHDB KPI tool found at
farmbusinessreview.ahdb.org.uk .
How can breed societies and members get involved?
• Both breed societies and members are encouraged
to shout about what they are doing to enhance the
maternal characteristics of their cows! Post a video on
your social media feeds talking about how you calve at
two and why, how you use maternal EBVs within your
herd or how you ensure your heifers are fit for the future
using #MaternalMatters
• We also have a variety of infographics we can share
with you to aid promotion of maternal traits, and all
our events and webinars can be found at ahdb.org.uk/
events
• We are always on the lookout for new photos to use
within the campaign, so if you have a high resolution
photo of cows, heifers or calves, please send to Emma.
Steele@ahdb.org.uk
• Is your herd performance recorded? We’ll be encouraging
suckler farmers to choose breeding stock with
good maternal EBVs and Indexes, so if you sell bulls,
this could be an opportunity for you. Speak to your
breed society about who your EBV provider is and how
to get involved.
5. Daily liveweight gain (DLWG) of
calves to weaning
With the right genetics, the dam’s ability to
milk, and correct grassland management,
calves should average at least 1.1kg/day from
birth to weaning. It is important that this is
achieved cost effectively, and if higher rates of
growth can only be achieved from increased
inputs, COP must be considered carefully.
Weigh calves at weaning to calculate, with
the average weight gain from birth to weaning
divided by the average age of calves when
weighed.
Young calves are the most feed-efficient
animals on the farm; make the most of this.
Good quality colostrum is essential in a suckler
system, and this can be achieved through
getting cow nutrition right through pregnancy
by ensuring cows have good milking ability
Boosting Margins with Charolais Genetics - Ian Goldie
Switching to rearing bull beef and
integrating more Charolais genetics to
their cows is boosting margins at Ian and
Dorothy Goldie’s Solwayfirth herd. At the
couple’s two farms between Annan and
Dumfries near the Solway coast, they have
high stocking rates and put more emphasis
on the Charolais cattle they keep.
The two farms, Greenfield and Aiket, are
run as one holding and are half a mile
apart, totalling 280 acres with 35 acres
of winter barley, and 15 acres of spring
barley. Both are grown each year and all
straw and grain is used on the farms.
“The rest is down to grass and all
ploughable,” explains Ian. “Most is grazed,
with around 80 acres cut for silage with
two cuts taken, and the aim of getting
1400 tonnes in the clamp at a yield of
around 8 to 10 tonnes/acre.”
He believes forage quality is key, aiming
to get a lot of his animals’ growth from
quality forage rather than bought-in concentrates.
The commercial cows are the couple’s main enterprise, with
the Charolais starting off as a bit of a hobby but now they pay
their way, and he’s keen to point out that they don’t carry
any passengers. His family were among the first enthusiasts
to import the breed from France, with Ian taking over the
running of the Longbridgemuir herd from his father David on
leaving school.
Originally Limousin cross heifers were bought in with calves
at foot for a flying herd. But, because of fertility and high
replacement rates in these cattle, it was decided to start a
closed herd to improve the herds health status and phase out
the bought-in Limousin crosses.
Ian Goldie
The spring calving herd totals 140 head consisting of 15
pedigree Charolais, 35 homebred Charolais cross cows incalf to
the Shorthorn, 65 Limousin cross Saler crosses and Shorthorn
cross cows in calf to a Charolais and 25 heifers in calf to the
Saler. The best Charolais, Saler, and Shorthorn cross calves
from these cows are then kept as replacements, and join the
herd after calving at two years, again to a Saler. A further 15
pedigrees calve in the autumn along with 15 cross cows in calf
to the Charolais.
“I’ve become a big fan of using Charolais genetics in my herd,
not least because the Charolais is a commercial animal in big
demand within the trade,” says Ian. “Easy fleshing and weight
for age are both bonuses, as is the easy calving traits and the
ability to be right up to date with performance figures thanks
to genetics. All the pure-bred heifers are pelvic-scanned by
the farm’s vet to detect any potential problems, but to date
they have scanned consistently well.”
Ian’s come a long way since his entire herd
and 400-head flock of sheep were wiped
out with Foot and Mouth. The sheep
haven’t come back, so there’s more space
for the cattle. Although 20 texel/beltex
ewes are now kept for their daughters
Heather(13) and Grace(9). Rebuilding
the Charolais under the Solwayfirth prefix
has taken time, with purchases made
from Moyness in the north of Scotland to
Brampton and Bassett in North Yorkshire.
The purchase of Glenericht Magestic
from Allen Drysdale, Middle Drimmie,
Perthshire for 11500gns in October 2017
was a gamechanger for the Solwayfirth
herd, with one of his first sons, Solwayfirth
Oneal, selling for £10000 on Harrison and
Hetheringtons online sale in May 2020
with the four Majestic sons averaging
out at £5525. Another son, Solwayfirth
Peterpan, sold for the second
top price of 14000gns in
February 2021 and a further
two Majestic sons selling for
7000gns each in May 2021.
All the cows are housed from
around the end of October on
slats, and when they begin to
calve around the 15 of April,
they move outdoors to calve
to prevent the calves picking
up bugs which can build up
indoors. A cow catcher was
purchased several years ago,
and this has made calving
outside a lot easier - weather
permitting.
All cattle are fed a TMR diet, with the young bulls on a growing
ration fed 1.5kg/dlwg. The ration includes their home-grown
barley and a bought-in protein balancer. The in-calf cows are
fed silage and minerals but the ration includes up to 4kgs of
ground straw, depending on silage analysis, to prevent them
from putting on too much weight pre-calving.
“The Charolais are popular in the store ring and sell well,” he
says, and aims to sell his steer calves and heifers not retained
as herd replacements at 10-12 months old, weighing between
380 and 400kgs. “We’ve decided to try something different,
by rearing bulls, and so far, this is paying dividends. We
finished about 30 this summer and have now left all male
calves entire this year as we’ve found the margin is a lot
better. We’re getting an average of £1650/head for the bull
beef ranging between 14 and 15 months
of age at slaughter, and 380 to 420kgs
deadweight. This equates to about an
extra £500 a head for keeping them an
extra 16 weeks, although this is probably
the most expensive period to keep them.
We’re relying on a deadweight price of
around £4.20/kg to get a decent margin.
“Overall our aim is to breed easy-care,
commercially viable females, and to
move away from the dairy influence on
the suckler cows. We want docile cows,
ones that are a bit smaller but still have
good pelvic space, are good milkers, carry
flesh better and feed the calf well. The
Charolais genetics certainly play a big, and
ever-increasing, role in this.”
Management, Genetics and Nutrition all play their part
in sustainable pedigree units. Jill Hunter - Harbro Beef & Sheep Nutritionist
When it comes to turning out top quality stock,
genetics, management and nutrition are all required
in equal measures.
Charolais stockmen and women are some of the
best in the business, well respected for their expert
stockmanship and ability to turn out exceptional
stock for both shows and sales. Couple that with a
pool of increasing quality genetics to choose from, it
just leaves the nutrition. This is where we at Harbro
come in.
Anyone can get cattle fat. You just give them more
starch.
However, to do the animals justice, we need to look
beyond big, fat cattle in the sale ring and think about
supplying prospective buyers with what they are
really searching for; fit and healthy animals which are
efficient, fertile and will last.
There is no silver bullet to improving on-farm
environmental credentials and sometimes we can
be inclined to think ‘what’s in it for me?’ when asked to make
changes – it is human nature! It is well accepted that any
improvement which is positive environmentally and also has a
positive effect on enterprise profitability, which is the ultimate
goal whether producing commercial or pedigree stock.
For an example of an easy way to improve environmental
credentials and profitability simultaneously, consider calf creep
feeding:
As soon as a calf starts to grow, feed efficiency begins to
reduce, simply because a bigger body size results in higher
maintenance requirements. For example, a calf is likely to
need only 90kg concentrate to gain 30kg liveweight, while an
older animal could eat 280kg concentrate to gain the same
30kg.
This means we should take advantage of this inbuilt high feed
efficiency to maximise liveweight gain early and minimise cost
per kilo gain. This will improve calf quality, weaning weights
and overall enterprise profitability.
As well as increasing feed efficiency, creep feeding improves
rumen development. This sets them up for life, whether
joining the breeding herd or being fed in preparation for shows
and sales.
There are four factors which should be considered when
feeding pedigree animals:
1 Health - Fundamentally, animals need to be healthy
if they are to perform and maximise their genetic
potential.
2 Immunity. A robust immune system ensures animals
fight infection and repair damaged tissue.
3 Fertility. Male and females must be fed to promote
fertility and prolificacy. Infertility is a waste of animals
and resources.
4 Longevity. Rearing replacements has a financial and
environmental impact, therefore animals need to last
a long time.
Last year, we launched the Stockman’s Choice range of
pedigree cattle feed which holds health, immunity, fertility
and longevity as core values to promote sustainability and
profitability. The range is quickly growing in popularity and we
were delighted to see so many customers doing exceptionally
well at shows and sales this year.
The range was developed by combining years of experience
in the pedigree world with technology and innovation. It was
informed by working closely with our nutritional partners,
leading producers as well as academic institutions, including
Glasgow Vet School to ensure both a holistic view as well as
the quality of our advice.
Stockman’s Choice was formulated using a carefully selected
range of sustainably sourced, quality raw materials with key
additives included to promote feed efficiency, health and
performance. To give you a flavour, key additives include:
• Rumitech, which is a Carbon Trust assured additive
proven to reduce methane emissions, while also
increasing feed conversion ratio. A trial carried out
with young bulls fed Rumitech showed an increase in
loin eye muscle area.
• Rumi Defence, which has antioxidant and antiinflammatory
properties. It enhances immunity and
improves the function of vital organs such as the
liver, which is undoubtedly under pressure with the
performance expected of these animals.
• Maxammon, which is an alkaline grain treatment,
meaning pH and protein level of the cereal have been
increased, allowing higher cereal inclusion more
safely. Improving rumen health also reduces the risk
of acidosis and laminitis.
The final piece which pulls the range together, is the advice
and support which comes from our team. We have a pedigree
team with a vast range of experience on hand to tailor
nutrition plans to meet performance targets and to allow stock
to be turned out to the highest standards.
We would love to speak to you about how a Stockman’s Choice
nutrition plan would complement your management and
genetics. Please get in touch.
Progressive Ataxia
Progressive Ataxia (PA) is extremely rare within the British
Charolais herd book. It is our duty to protect the members
and our herd book therefore, we have made a few changes to
our bye laws. We would like to see these changes as a positive
step and a tool to help our members make informed decisions
on their breeding programme which will in turn give them a
healthy and profitable business. There is no reason as to why
breeders should shy away for a single carrier of PA providing,
they know the status of the bull / cows they are mating them
with. Below you will find some answers to common questions
and some research from the University of California which
explains things in more detail.
Progressive Ataxia (PA) of Charolais cattle is an inherited
neurodegenerative disease affecting the hind limbs that can
gradually progress until the affected animal is unable to stand.
Animals can carry no copies, one copy, or two copies of the
gene.
- Animals who carry one copy are normal but can
potentially produce affected offspring if bred to
another carrier.
- Double carriers are affected by the disease and must
be avoided.
What are the signs of double PA carriers? The animal begins
to lose power in its back and limbs. It begins to walk like it’s
drunk! Over time, it will get worse until it is no longer able to
stand. Some of you may have seen animals in your herd with
signs or symptoms of PA. If you have, we advise that you test
these animals and their relations, sons, daughters, etc. This will
assist you in making future breeding decisions. It is important
to bear in mind that other neurodegenerative defects occur in
Charolais cattle which show similar signs and symptoms of (PA),
but only if the animal is tested as a double carrier can it have
progressive ataxia.
Is PA a problem? PA can potentially be a serious problem if not
handled correctly. Double PA carriers are a major problem and
can have disastrous effects on a herd. The production of double
carriers must be avoided. Double carriers must be eliminated
from the breed. As breeders, you must educate yourselves on
the disease and avoid the production of double carriers. Single
carriers are not affected by the disease but can potentially
produce affected animals if mated with another carrier. For
instance, single carriers must not be mated with other single
carriers.
How do you test your animals for PA? You can test your
animals for PA by sending in a hair sample to the society office
or alternatively, if the animal has existing DNA tests, then
the society can request the lab to carry out the test from the
original sample. The cost for this test is £20 plus VAT. It usually
takes 4-5 weeks for results to come back, but it depends on
when samples are received. Unfortunately, you cannot test for
PA from a genotype at present. We hope that this will be an
option in the future.
How does it affect commercial cattle? Charolais Bulls are
typically crossed with a range of other breeds and as such,
commercial cattle are not affected as there can only be a
maximum of one copy of the gene passed to the cross cattle,
which cannot produce the effects of the disease.
With selective breeding, problems associated with PA can be
avoided. It is understood PA has been in Charolais cattle for
over 50 years. In that time, Charolais have risen to become Europe’s
number 1 beef breed. As such, the current steps taken
by the society are considered to be measured and proportionate
to the potential problem of progressive ataxia.
Information based on research carried out by the Veterinary
Genetics Laboratory at the University of California. Please read
through this thoroughly and educate yourself on Progressive
Ataxia.
Phenotype: Progressive ataxia (PA) of Charolais cattle is
characterized by onset of unsteady gait and stiff hind limbs with
gradual worsening of the condition that results in an inability to
stand and permanent recumbency (lying down). Other signs of
the disease include head bobbing when excited and, in females,
irregular pulsatile urination. Onset of the disease is typically
around 18 months of age but can occur as early as 6 months or
as late as 3-5 years. The evolution of the disease is also variable
from a few weeks to more than 18 months from onset of signs.
Mode of Inheritance: Autosomal recessive
Alleles: N = Normal/Unaffected, PA = Progressive ataxia
Breeds appropriate for testing: Charolais, Charolais crosses,
Blonde d’Aquitaine
Why is PA coming to light now? The British Charolais Cattle
Society have been closely liaising with the French Herd Book
Charolais who have been aware of the disease for many years
and have been taking steps to manage the disease in the herd
book with an aim for elimination. As such, the Charolais Society
have now taken initial steps with a plan to review the situation
regularly.
What does this mean for you? The progressive ataxia status of
animals may become important for you as a pedigree breeder
and the society would like to encourage members to test
their stock bulls/ females and any new potential stock bulls
or females coming into their breeding programme. Once the
status is known, then you as the breeder can make informed
decisions on mating.
Explanation of Results:
· Cattle with N/N genotype will not have this progressive
ataxia and cannot transmit this progressive ataxia
variant to their offspring.
· Cattle with N/PA genotype will not be affected by this
progressive ataxia but are carriers. They will transmit
this progressive ataxia variant to 50% of their offspring.
Matings between two carriers result in a 25% chance
of producing a calf with this progressive ataxia.
· Cattle with PA/PA genotype will have this progressive
ataxia, a neurodegenerative disease, and will transmit
this progressive ataxia variant to all of their offspring.
Progressive ataxia (PA) of Charolais cattle is an inherited
neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. It
is caused by abnormal development of the myelin sheath that
supports and insulates axons of nerve fibers in specific parts
of the brain and spinal cord. PA is characterized by onset of
unsteady gait and stiff hind limbs with gradual worsening of the
condition that results in an inability to stand and permanent
recumbency (lying down). Animals have to be euthanized as
there is no effective treatment for this condition.
A single base substitution (c.608G>A) in exon 5 of KIF1C gene
has been identified as a causal variant for PA in the Charolais
breed. This substitution modifies a conserved amino acid
(p.Arg203Gln) resulting in a mutated protein. In addition,
because of the location of this mutation at the end of exon 5,
this variant also causes alternative splicing of this gene that
skips exon 5 and produces a truncated (shorter) protein. The
overall combined effect of the mutation is the absence of KIF1C
protein in the brain.
PA is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion, which means
that both males and females are affected and that 2 copies of
the defective gene are needed for presentation of the disease.
Frequency of PA mutation in the Charolais breed has been
recently estimated to be about 13%. In a sample of 3,300
French commercial Charolais cattle screened for the mutation,
the incidence of affected animals was around 1.1% among
animals aged 7 and just below 1% at 24 months old, with no
affected, homozygous animals observed at 30 months of age.
The prevalence of the mutation and disease in the Charolais
breed result from a popular sire effect tracing to a carrier bull,
born in 1964, that had high contribution to the breed, and to
a hitch-hiking effect from close proximity of the PA mutation
to a genomic region under positive selection for muscular
development and weight gain. A very low frequency (less
than 0.1%) of the PA mutation has also been found in Blonde
d’Aquitaine cattle, which have Charolais influence.
Testing for PA in Charolais, Charolais-crossbreds, and Blonde
d’Aquitaine cattle helps breeders determine if carriers are
present among breeding stock and use mating strategies to
avoid producing affected calves. Carriers can be safely bred to
N/N mates, as this type of breeding will not produce affected
calves. Genetic testing also helps veterinarians to confirm
diagnosis of progressive ataxia in animals exhibiting signs of the
disease.
Other neurodegenerative defects occur in Charolais cattle
that are not caused by the PA mutation, but their etiology is
unknown.
Results will normally be reported as follows –
· Homozygous N/N - Normal. No copies of the PA
mutation are present
· Heterozygous N/PA - Carrier. 1 copy of the PA mutation
is present. Animal is normal but can produce affected
offspring if bred to another carrier.
· Homozygous PA/PA - Affected. 2 copies of the PA
mutation.
SALES ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
BVD VACCINATIONS - ALL Charolais cattle forward at BCCS auspices sales are to be vaccinated against BVD (Bovine Viral
Diarrhoea) as per the manufacturers instructions.
For herds which are in a CHeCS approved health scheme and are BVD accredited they do not have to be BVD blood antigen
tested, but must be fully BVD vaccinated.
For the herds which are not BVD accredited, then potential sale cattle should be BVD antigen tested negative, and
given the first BVD vaccination on the same day as the blood sample is taken. If the BVD antigen test is negative, the
animals should then be given the second vaccination 3-4 weeks later (if using a double jab vaccine). BVD antigen testing
certificates must accompany the cattle to the sale or they will be rejected from the sale.
IMPORTANT - Do not vaccinate cattle just prior to the sales as immunity to BVD will not have
built up sufficiently.
CATTLE NOT FULLY VACCINATED FOR BVD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE AUCTION
CENTRE.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE STIRLING FEBRUARY AND OCTOBER SALES ARE EXCLUSIVE FOR
ABRI BREEDPLAN RECORDED BULLS WHICH MUST (AS A MINIMUM REQUIREMENT) BE
RECORDED FOR BIRTH WEIGHT, 200 DAY WT, 400 DAY WT AND BE INDEPENDENTLY ULTRA
South Midlands - Steve Hookway
I hope you all had a nice festive holiday
and I wish everyone a Happy and
Prosperous New Year.
Lets hope that by the time the summer
comes, we will be able to put the
challenging last couple of years behind
us and meet up with people that we
don’t get to see if we don’t get to go to
our summer shows and events. It has
been a sad time hearing of friends that
have passed away in the last few years.
These are people that we only meet
up with a few times a year but look
forward to spending time with in the
summer,the old characters that make
these events what they are. You soon
realise that it’s people who make these
shows memorable.
Moreton in the Marsh Show
Cattle entries were low at Moreton.
This was one of the few shows to go
ahead as restrictions were eased. This
put the Charolais entries in the “any
other continental breed” classes. PJ
and Anne Maher were successful with
their young bull Roscrea Riverdance
who was second in his class.
Christmas Dinner
The first get together since the
pandemic was our Christmas lunch
held in December. It was nice just to
get together again as a group of friends
and catch up with each others news.
Border - Betty Graham
We’re now at the end of December,
and although some events have
been held, we’re still experiencing
cancellation of events due to the
virus. We hope that everyone has had
their two vaccinations plus the booster,
and that these prove to be effective
in our battle against Covid. We’re
now looking forward to Christmas
and the New Year. Hopefully we can
all see family and friends if no further
restrictions are applied due to the
severity of the omicron variant.
buzz and atmosphere.
The Society had its stand with support
from the Border Club who sourced the
cattle on display, supplied and served
refreshments and manned the stand
on the day. Thanks go to all our cattle
suppliers and helpers - your efforts
were much appreciated by our many
visitors who admired the animals on
display. A pen of three lovely Charolais
sired heifers from Mark and Sarah
Harryman were used for the total
Guess the Weight competition. The
heifers weighed in at 1310 kgs and
Scotland - Carly Mackay
AGM Results
The forty-ninth AGM of the S&N
Charolais Club was held at UA Stirling
on Sunday 17 October 2021.
Colin Wight gave a summary of the
Charolais bull sales including top
prices, averages, and mentioned
Scottish members who had done well.
He mentioned the Highland Showcase
and The Yorkshire show where Scottish
cattle had won prizes. Socially, the
club had no events because of the
pandemic but hopes this will change
this year.
Lois Scott & Abbie Anderson were
elected on to the S&N committee and
Colin Wight was re-elected Chairman,
with Matthew Milne re-elected as Vice
Chairman. Carlene Mackay is to remain
as Secretary and will now also take
on the Treasurer role due to Yvonne
Grant’s retiral from the club.
We would like to thank Yvonne &
David for all their help and time they
have given to the club over the years
– they have been a tremendous help
and support for everyone, and we wish
them both all the very best. We had
hoped to have a presentation for them
but due to unforeseen circumstances
we will now hope to have this at our
next meeting in February.
Scottish & Northern Commercial Herd
Competition 2022
It has been proposed that the club
organise a suckler herd competition for
2022 to support commercial farmers
using Charolais bulls. As a club we are
currently looking at what we can do
to make this possible and we will have
all the information for you after our
meeting in February 2022. Keep your
eyes peeled on the club’s Facebook &
Instagram pages for updates on this.
October Bull Sales – United Auctions
Stirling
Coming up trumps at the October
show and sale was the Supreme
& Junior Champion BALTHAYOCK
RANGER.
At 28,000gns this young bull from
Major D Walter, Balthayock, Perth has
a vast array of prizes in his pedigree.
Ranger was sired by Balthayock Imp,
who won the titles of Breed Champion
and Interbreed Champion at the Royal
Highland Show in 2015. Ranger was
purchased by T Corbett of the Teme
Herd in Knighton, Powys.
Please see Page 4 for all the other
leading prices and prize winners from
the October 2021 Bull Sales
The Lochend Ladies had a sizzling finish
to the two days for the breed with
some truly exceptional heifers from Iain
& Rhona Millar of the Lochend herd in
Port of Menteith, Stirling. The top price
of their sale was for Lochend Rolo, a
12-month-old heifer by the easy calving
Gretnahouse Ming and out of Lochend
Navajo, a daughter of Mortimers Echo.
Rolo went away home to Pitcairn Farm
in Fife with Craig & Katreen Malone.
Selling for the next highest price of
10,000gns was Lochend Pawnee,
who had been scanned in-calf to
Gretnahouse Ming. Pawnee was sired
by 2016 Class Winner Nuthampstead
Judas, and her dam is a daughter of
Bassett Unicorn, Lochend Eve. Pawnee
was sold down to East Sussex, where
she will settle into her new home at
Highfields Park Farm.
Borderway Agri-Expo – Harrison &
Hetherington, Carlisle – Friday 29
October 2021
Winning the British Charolais Society
sponsored class “Special Charolais
Heifer” was “Molly Malone” from
Hugh & Stewart Dunlop, Holehouse,
Ayr – this home bred heifer is sired by
their stock bull Doonvalley Harry and
has an exceptional pedigree behind
her as her granny, sired by Allanfauld
Vagabond was a sister to the famous
2004 Smithfield Champion Dancing
Queen who sold for the record price of
£16,000. With this depth of breeding,
it’s easy to see why Hugh & Stewart
have decided she’s far too special to
part with and will be kept for breeding.
Molly’s winter show haul has been a
first in her class as well as winning the
society prize at Agri-Expo, third in her
class at LiveScot in Lanark, and her final
show destination being the Royal Welsh
Winter Fair where she also took the red
ticket back to Holehouse Farm.
Stars Of the Future Calf Show – United
Auctions, Stirling – Saturday 13
November 2021
This year saw a bumper entry of 39
calves from all over Scotland for the
much-anticipated Stars of the Future
Calf Show. The committee had been
eagerly waiting for this day after last
year’s show was sadly cancelled due to
covid restrictions.
Chairman Robert Paterson spoke after
the event and said, It had been a show
to remember with exhibitors coming
from as far south as Devon and as far
north as Inverness, with the standard of
cattle being as good as I have ever seen.
The task of judging the Charolais
section was handed to Allen Drysdale,
Middle Drimmie, who later said, “It
was a great honour and privilege to be
asked to judge the Stars of the Future
Calf Show, there certainly was a few
stars of the future in front of me to
judge.
The quality of the cattle I judged was
tremendous, especially the calves
winning the reserve and overall
championships in each age section.
The most pleasing thing for me was to
see so many new and young exhibitors
showing, this gives me a great heart
that the breed is in safe hands for years
to come.”
LiveScot 2021 – Friday 26 & Saturday
27 November
A new format for the Live Scot
Committee saw them host a Pedigree
Calf & Lamb Show on the Friday
evening which proved to be a great
success for the event. Winning the
Inter-Breed Pedigree Calf Champion
was Brailes Samson owned by Brailes
Livestock and brought out by the Rettie
Team, Methven. Winning the breed
section earlier that evening, Samson
had also previously won the Junior
Championship a few weeks prior to this
at Stars of the Future.
Saturday of the show weekend
brought a day to remember for the
well-known couple Craig & Katreen
Malone, Pitcairn, Fife. A day they both
have dreamed of since childhood
and a dream they had always hoped
they could both achieve. Finally, their
dreams came true in the form of “Silver
Lining” a Charolais cross steer which
was purchased from Duncan & Judy
Semple, Dippen, Argyll after standing
champion at United Auctions sale at
end of September. Sired by a home
bred bull, Carradale Felix out of a Lim
X Cow, he crossed the weigh bridge
at 622kg for LiveScot. Standing first
in his class in the morning under the
watchful eye of judge Jimmy Woods,
Popes Farm, Preston, he then went
on to take the Steer Championship
closely followed on by the prestigious
Supreme Beef Cattle Champion before
finally selling to Kitsons Butchers in
Yorkshire for £5600. As a buyer of 450
to 500 head of prime cattle each week
for his meat business, he said, “This
beast had presence right from the getgo
and he was shown in just the right
condition to appeal to the high street
butcher’s market, with just a perfect
amount of cover.”
Royal Welsh Winter Fair
On behalf of the Scottish & Northern
Charolais Club, we wanted to say
a very well done to our friends &
fellow members on the Royal Welsh
Winter Fair Society stand – they did
such a fantastic job of decorating it
and deserved to come home with the
“Overall Winner” plaque for “Best
Tradestand” at the Royal Welsh Winter
Fair.
Committee Christmas Catch Up –
Saturday 4 December
A very enjoyable Christmas catch
up was held at the Cairngorm Hotel,
Aviemore on Saturday 4 December for
those from the committee that were
able to attend. Some of our team even
managed to get lost on route and visit
another hotel in the close vicinity –
time for a sneaky drink or a dip in the
pool I reckon. So, for next year I will be
sending out detailed maps to everyone
who can attend just to make sure they
get the right hotel !!
Once we all had arrived & checked in,
a fantastic time was had by all, as a
few of us hadn’t had a chance to catch
up since before covid. It truly was a
great night with lots & lots of laughs
– a Christmas feast was provided by
the hotel and a few sherries were
consumed until the last straggler’s
went to bed around 4am. I can neither
South West - Vickie Sellick
With another year of uncertainty due
to the pandemic, we don’t have much
news to bring you from the South
West. Given that a lot of our big shows
are held early in the season, there
were a lot of changes to the normal
schedule, with some shows opting to
move to the end of the season, others
not offering cattle classes and some
called off altogether. I really hope 2022
sees the return of the shows and hope
that they will be well supported after a
difficult few years for everyone.
At the Devon County Show in July,
Penfound Royalnairn, owned and
exhibited by Mr Roger Hopper,
Penfound Charolais, Bude, Cornwall
was crowned Supreme Male Champion
Charolais. Royalnairn, born April 2020,
is by the Hopper’s stock bull Balbithan
Nairn, and out of a Balmyle Dingle
daughter. Penfound Razzledazzle stood
second behind a heifer from Thor
Atkinson, Cumbria. This was followed
by more success at Okehampton
Show in August where Royalnairn and
Razzledazzle, a January 2020 Blelack
Digger daughter were awarded overall
champion beef pair of all breeds.
After a successful 2021 show season,
Herd Competition
We were lucky enough to be able
to hold our herd competition in the
autumn. Our judge Charlie Mclean
from Mortimers Charolais, looked
over plenty of good cattle during his
trip from Cornwall to Swindon and
awarded the results as below. We
were very pleased to invite Charlie and
our sponsors, Greenslade Taylor Hunt
and Barnaby Bridgman, to our annual
DNA PARENTAGE CHECKING
All animals sold privately to pedigree herds must be tested and at least sire verified before they are transferred. This will
be at the vendors cost unless, at the discretion of the society, the animal has been purchased from a non member, a membership
which has ceased or prior to this rule being implemented on 01/03/2020, in which case the cost will default to the purchaser.
All animals entered into a Society sale must be at least sire verified.
All animals’ samples must be either already being processed by the lab or have their DNA profile already completed at the time that
they are entered into a Society sale.
Furthermore, if the DNA profile, parentage verification and myostatin tests are not complete prior to the sale catalogue going to
print (usually approximately three weeks before the sale) then the animal will not be permitted to attend
Having a pending sample stored at the Society office, will not count as the sample being processed at the lab, therefore it is the
responsibility of the member to check that the animal’s sample has been sent to the lab prior to entering the animal into a Society
sale.
All animals will have its parentage verification status displayed in the sale catalogue as either PV, SV or DV. In addition the parentage
verification status will also be displayed on pen cards.
Please note there is a saving of £5.00 + VAT on DNA testing for submitting pending hair samples for animals under 10 months of
age.
January Newsletter 22.indd 64 21/01/2022 15:45:59
Breed Information
Charolais is the leading terminal beef sire noted for its fast growth and excellent conformation. Charolais cattle are creamy white
through to wheaten in colour. Bulls are noted for muscling, with excellent loins, good hindquarters and deep second thigh, while
females are less heavily muscled and have well developed udders. Charolais stand on four strong feet and legs and should be alert.
Charolais Males
• The Charolais bull should be a well-muscled animal on good strong feet and legs to carry the heavy weights associated
with the breed.
• The head should have a wide muzzle with a strong jaw placement.
• The eyes should be set reasonably wide apart.
• The ears should be big.
• The head should be sat proud on a strong muscular neck.
• The back should be long and level without dips, particularly behind the shoulder.
• There should be a good heart room and a minimum amount of brisket in the forequarter.
• The tail-setting should be set comfortably into good wide plates over the hindquarters of the bull.
• The hindquarters should also have a good depth of second thigh and should be well rounded.
• There can be two extreme types of Charolais which should be discouraged. One type would be the tall, flat sided bull
which has a slack back and a poor hindquarter. This type has no place in modern day beef production (and indeed
never has). The second would be the double-muscled heavy shouldered bull which invariably has associated fertility and
calving problems.
Charolais Females
• The females should have a feminine appearance and should not be heavily muscled and masculine in appearance as this
sort tends to be either poor or irregular breeders.
• The head should be wide muzzled with a longer rather than boxy type appearance. Like the bulls, the head should be
alert.
• The back should be long and level with a good spring of rig and a minimum of brisket in the forequarter.
• The tail setting should not be dropped and preferably should be slightly raised as this is alleged to be associated with
easier calving.
• The legs should be of strong flat bone on good sound feet.
• In the case of cows, the udder should be of good capacity with four well-formed teats for suckled calf production.
• The colour of Charolais cattle is generally creamy white through to a light tan colour. Broken coloured cattle are not to be
encouraged
BVD VACCINATIONS
IMPORTANT - Do not vaccinate cattle just prior to the sales as immunity to BVD will not have built up sufficiently.
CATTLE NOT FULLY VACCINATED FOR BVD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE AUCTION CENTRE
Pre-Sale Checks
To avoid the disappointment of having cattle rejected at the pre-sale inspections, members should carry out
the following checks before consigning Charolais cattle to the Sales.
1. As from 1/1/2020 All Charolais animals sold through
BCCS auspices sales must be DNA tested, sire verified
and myostatin tested prior to sale. DNA bags are
available from the Society office, and all cattle are to be
BVD vaccinated.
2.Check the I.D and documentation is correct.
3.Check the dentition is corrrect and the incisor teeth are
biting on the upper pad.
4.In the case of bulls, check testicles are firm and even
sized and comply with the following minimum scrotal
circumferences:-
13-18 months Minimum 34cm
18-24 months Minimum 36cm
>24 months Minimum 38cm
5.Check the animals are free from warts (pay particular
attention to the sheath and scrotal area) ringworm,
mange and other infectious or contagious diseases.
6.Check the animal’s feet and legs are sound and the
general locomotion is satisfactory.
7.*All bulls must be nose rung and halter-led and be 13
months or over on the day of the sale.
8.Check the animals are of good conformation and in
good condition and meet the minimum weight for age
standard as per the charts.
*NB. Stirling Sales - October and February
The minimum selling age is 14 months on the day of the
Please note: there is currently a shortage of
BREEDPLAN-accredited ultrasound scanners in
the south of England. We are working with other
breed societies in order to gain accreditation for
new technicians to cover the area, but the training
process is still ongoing. In the meantime, if you
are in one of the affected areas, please contact the
Society office via email (charlotte@charolais.co.uk)
or telephone (02476 697 222) for the latest advice
on arranging a scanning visit.
