AN 11-YEAR delay in
rebuilding a community
facility has been described as
an “injustice” to a “forgotten
suburb”.
Shirley locals were promised
a new community centre after
the old one at 10 Shirley Rd
was demolished following the
February 22, 2011 earthquake.
However, the city council is
only now starting the discussion
of a possible rebuild.
Community group Shirley
Road Central chair Jennifer
Dalziel has been advocating for
a rebuild since the old facility
was demolished, and described
the whole process as “hugely
frustrating”.
“My position is the injustice
of it,” she said.
“They call Shirley the
forgotten suburb, and recently
with Emmett St flooding and
no one came to do anything,
it’s like Shirley is just left out of
everything.”
Dalziel said the city council
told locals there would be
a rebuild of the centre at its
original site but in 2016, the idea
was dropped.
In 2018, there were two
feasibility studies carried out
but both were rejected, Dalziel
said.
In May last year, Dalziel,
along with Shirley residents
passionate abou the rebuild of
the community centre, created
a petition advocating for it.
They gained more than 1200
signatures from the community.
GONE: The site of the former Shirley Community Centre has had a skate ramp installed,
but locals want to see the centre restored. Below – the centre pictured in 2012 before it
Man who killed son
labelled
a ‘coward,
monster’
• By Kurt Bayer
A FATHER who deliberately drove
off the road at 130km/h, killing his
six-year-old son in a fiery car crash,
has been jailed for five years.
An emotional sentencing hearing
at the High Court in Christchurch
yesterday heard from Lachlan Gebhardt’s
heartbroken mother Kim
Manson who called her ex-partner
Niklas Gebhardt a “coward” and a
“monster”.
Manson said her “beautiful,
sweet son” – who she called her best
friend – was killed in a “planned
and calculated” act.
While she knows Gebhardt – who
claims he has amnesia and cannot
remember why he drove off the
road – was convicted on a charge of
manslaughter, she said it will always
be murder to her.
New Zealand Prostate Cancer
Foundation’s Blue September
campaign.
The 33-year-old will be a
special HRNZ ambassador for
the month.
The annual campaign is all
about increasing awareness and
raising funds for prostate cancer
research and treatment.
For Moody it’s a subject that’s
very personal. His father Tony
Moody died from prostate
cancer in July 2020.
It’s estimated that 10 per
cent of New Zealand men will
develop prostate cancer at some
time in their life.
Moody has been involved in
raising funds for the Prostate
Cancer Foundation before.
After becoming the 19th
Crusader to play 100 games
he auctioned his signed
playing jersey on Trade Me.
It eventually sold for $11,050,
with all proceeds going to the
foundation.
Ten harness racing drivers
will also be ambassadors during
the month. For every win
they have wearing their Blue
September pants funds will be
raised, thanks to the support
of HRNZ, harness racing clubs
around the country, and drivers’
individual sponsors.
The HRNZ campaign raised
$20,000 last year. This is HRNZ’s
campaign, and Moody’s first.
Reward sees tips in Kirsty Bentley case
• By Tina Grumball
POLICE yesterday started
sifting through information
prompted by a $100,000 reward
to try and identify the killer of
Kirsty Bentley.
Detective Inspector Greg
Murton said yesterday 20-25
people had nominated people
they had suspicions about or
provided pieces of information
since a $100,000 reward was
posted last week.
The reward was for information
or evidence leading to the
identification and conviction of
the person or people responsible
for the Ashburton
15-year-old’s death,
which remains unsolved
Murton said he would
be working through
the tips in the coming
weeks himself.
Kirsty was last seen
alive on the afternoon
of December 31, 1998,
as she left home to walk
her labrador-cross, Abby.
Kirsty
Bentley
Abby was found the next day
tied to a tree near the Ashburton
River, but Kirsty’s body was not
discovered until 17 days
later in the Rakaia Gorge.
Initially, the investigation
focused on Bentley’s
father, Sid, and brother,
John, but both denied any
involvement. Murton,
who has looked over the
cold case, believes Kirsty
was abducted and killed
by a stranger, who either
smoked or grew cannabis and
Christchurch
joins national
slump as
house prices
finally drop
CHRISTCHURCH has
belatedly joined New Zealand’s
residential real estate downturn,
as house prices record their most
significant slump since the 2008
global financial crisis.
Market analyst CoreLogic’s
latest House Price Index revealed
Christchurch experienced a drop
in prices for the first time in this
quarterly cycle, a 1.6 per cent dip
resulting in an average value of
$771,108.
Nationally house values slipped
0.9 per cent in July, resulting in a
three-month drop of 2.5 per cent
– the largest quarterly decrease
since a 3.4 per cent dip in October,
2008. The average house price in
New Zealand is $1,009,662.
CoreLogic also revealed the
city’s hillside suburbs copped the
largest decrease in a three-month
period up to and including July,
though the median value was still
far and away the most lucrative at
$1,067,034.
CoreLogic NZ research head
Nick Goodall was not surprised
Christchurch joined the other
main centres as the market flattened.
“Supportive factors such as better
affordability in Christchurch
may mean values and demand
hold up better than other main
centres but that doesn’t mean
Christchurch will be immune
from the downturn,” he said.
Despite the fall in house
prices, Goodall said it was still
challenging for buyers to enter the
market.
Real estate agent Richard
Withy from Ray White was not
surprised values in Christchurch
had dropped.
“There’s always a bit of buyer
push back after a sustained period
of a boom market,” he said.
“Buyers get frustrated, you then
have economic factors that come
in like interest rates, living costs
going up.”
‘Lachlan should’ve expected to be safe
• From page 1
And she will always question
why he took her son.
“Why not just do it yourself,
why did you have to take my
sweet boy with you?” Manson
said.
Former footballer Gebhardt,
32, stood with his head bowed
in the dock as Justice Jan-Marie
Doogue sentenced him to five
years in prison.
He earlier pleaded guilty to a
manslaughter charge.
Although defence counsel Andrew
McCormick acknowledged
an “absolute tragedy” which has
“affected many, many people”, he
stressed that it was not murder.
“This is not a murder case. He
has not pleaded guilty to murder,”
he said.
The lawyer took issue with the
Crown calling Gebhardt’s actions
deliberate.
Justice Doogue, however, found
he was “deliberately engaging in
highly-dangerous and reckless
driving”.
“This was a deliberate crash at
very high speed,” the judge said,
telling Gebhardt that he breached
the precious trust his young son
would’ve had in him.
“Lachlan should’ve expected to
be safe in the hands of his father.
“He was completely at the
mercy of your decision-making
that day.”
TRAGIC SCENE: Lachlan Gebhardt, 6, died after the car he was in failed to take the bend
at Lehmans Rd and River Rd, near Rangiora, in November 2019 and launched over a river
stopbank. Inset: Niklas Gebhardt at the time of the crash. PHOTO: KURT BAYER
The judge heard that Gebhardt
currently lacks insight into his
offending and has not taken
responsibility for it.
Gebhardt has amnesia from
the period of time he drove off
the road, McCormick said, and
cannot remember why he did so.
He’s now a broken man, he said,
suffering from diagnosed “complicated
grief”.
The court heard that Gebhardt
drove off the road at high speed
through the bend of Lehmans
Rd and River Rd near Rangiora
Racecourse, on November 5,
2019.
The car launched 24m in the
air before it hit a tree 7m higher
than its take-off point.
It burst into flames and Lachlan
died at the scene.
There were no signs Gebhardt
tried to brake or slow down, the
court heard yesterday.
As members of the public
dragged Gebhardt out of the
burning wreck, he asked to be
put back in to change places with
his son.
“He’s such a nice boy. I want to
swap with him,” Gebhardt told
them. “I want a bullet.”
Crown prosecutor Mark
Zarifeh earlier told the court
Gebhardt had shared custody of
Lachlan with his ex-partner.
It was a “very sad case”, Zarifeh
said, and one that defies explanation
or description.
“There are really no words that
can capture the loss caused by
Lachlan’s death,” he said.
On November 5, 2019, Gebhardt
arranged with Lachlan’s
mother to pick him up from
Dudley Swimming pool in Rangiora.
He took over from Lachlan’s
grandmother at the pool and
they left at 4.08pm, with Lachlan
sitting in the back seat of his
Mazda car.
Gebhardt drove at speed along
Lehmans Rd on the westerly outskirts
of Rangiora, faster than the
posted 80km/h limit. He swerved
sharply when he passed a vehicle
and had to get back to avoid an
oncoming vehicle.
At the end of the straight, there
was a sharp right-hand corner
with a posted 25km/h speed
advisory.
Police estimated his speed at
about 130km/h when he reached
the turn, but he made no effort to
brake, slow, or swerve.
The car hit the speed sign,
airborne for 24m before it hit a
tree 7m higher than its take-off
point.
The car spun to the ground
and caught fire.
Members of the public called
for emergency services and then
pulled open the passenger door
and dragged Gebhardt out.
The fire prevented them from
getting back to the car.
Gebhardt received burns to 30
per cent of his body, a fractured
femur, and facial injuries.
Lachlan died at the scene.
When he was interviewed by
the police about seven weeks
later, Gebhardt said he could not
recall anything about the crash.
In September 2020, 10 months
after the fatal crash, he walked
into the Christchurch Police
Station, took his clothes off and
pleaded to be jailed.
He was arrested and charged
with obscene exposure in public.
At a court appearance soon
after, McCormick explained that
Gebhardt was “having difficulty”
with trauma issues.
However, Gebhardt insisted on
pleading guilty immediately, and
was jailed for a month for the
obscene exposure offence.
The crash was across the
road from Manson’s work at
the racecourse and around the
Justice Jan-Marie Doogue.
corner from where she lived with
Lachlan.
She believes Gebhardt wanted
to cause “maximum pain” and
would never forgive him.
In the days after the crash, the
family were led to believe it had
been a tragic accident, Lachlan’s
grandmother told the court
today.
But after visiting the scene,
she did not believe it was an
accident.
“I believe you murdered my
grandson,” she said in her victim
impact statement today.
“You used your car as a
The distraught grandmother
said Lachlan’s death has left a
“yawning chasm” in their lives.
She is disgusted and
appalled by Gebhardt’s act,
saying he never apologised
or showed remorse, and told
him today that she could never
forgive him.
Lachlan was the “best
grandson anyone could want”
who knew right from wrong.
She said Gebhardt “took his
life and stole his future”.
“I don’t know how anyone
could be so cruel.”
It was “deliberate driving
conduct” that day by Gebhardt,
Zarifeh told the court. There
was no other explanation, he
said.
In this case – unlike many
others – Gebhardt was an
unimpaired driver, Zarifeh said.
There were no external or
psychological explanations for
the crash, he said, referring to a
report that found Gebhardt was
not suffering from any type of
mental health issues at the time
of the crash.
And there was no suggestion
it was an accident, the Crown
says, with no evidence he’d tried
to brake or slow down before the
crash, on a piece of road he knew
well.
Justice Doogue said the
victims today eloquently
described the heartbreak, pain,
torture, torment, and anger they
continue to experience.
“Any sentence I impose,
irrespective of its nature and
length, will not address the
victims’ loss,” she said, adding
that no mother should have to
attend their six-year-old son’s
funeral.
Gebhardt is disqualified from
driving, once released from
prison, for seven years.
Extended
A WELL-BEING response
Bromley wastewater treatment
plant.
The plan was approved by the
city council to go towards residents
whose health and well-being
is still being impacted by the
stench from the plant.
The plan includes extended support
for schools and early learning
centres, including those in Southshore
It comes as complaints arose
from residents after the city council
approved a one off payment
of $200 to in-zone households to
help deal with the stench in May.
The money was offered to
residents in a set geographical
Kirsty Bentley’s best friend haunted
• By Kurt Bayer
THE BEST friend of murdered
Ashburton schoolgirl Kirsty
Bentley, who was with her hours
before she disappeared, remains
haunted by her final wave
goodbye.
Lee-Anne Murray, who hung
out with Bentley on New Year’s
Eve 1998, is hopeful the killer
will finally be brought to justice,
with police offering a $100,000
reward to help solve the 24-year
cold case mystery.
Murray (née Jellyman), a
married 40-year-old mother who
lives in Christchurch, has spoken
about the impact her close
friend’s death has had on her life.
“Unfortunately, as a teenager, I
feel I lost a lot of that innocence
and naïvety that comes with
being a 16-year-old,” says
Murray.
“I kept a lot of the trauma
pushed to the back of my mind,
until 10 years later when it really
hit me and I needed some professional
support.”
On December 31, 1998, Kirsty
caught up with her best friend
Murray for some shopping in
their hometown of Ashburton.
They lounged in the library before
going to The Warehouse and
some other shops around town.
“She wanted to get her
favourite body spray, which I can
smell right now thinking about
it,” Murray says.
“We talked about school, boys,
the rest of the holidays, her coming
to the races with me and dad
the next day – we were teenage
girls so we talked about a lot of
stuff! I don’t have a clue what
I ate, but I remember we had
milkshakes.
“Her mood was very Kirsty,
and those that knew her know
exactly what I mean. Lots of
laughing, giggles and smiles.”
Around early afternoon, they
parted ways, thinking they
would see each other the following
day.
Kirsty, who arrived back at the
family’s South St home at about
2.30pm before taking her black
labrador-cross Abby for a walk,
was never seen again.
The next day, Abby was found
tied to a tree near the Ashburton
River, and the teen’s underwear
was nearby – a scene that Detective
Inspector Greg Murton, who
is now in charge of the cold-case
file and working on a “strangertype
abduction” theory involving
a loner killer who lived locally,
believes was staged by the killer.
Her body was discovered two
weeks later in the Rakaia River
gorge, 40km away.
Murray often recalls Kirsty’s
smile and final wave goodbye
that fateful afternoon.
“That’s stuck with me,” she
says.
SWITCHING TO
FIBRE ISN’T HARD.
FINDING A SERIES TO BINGE.
THAT’S HARD.
y goodbye
“I think about Kirsty a lot,
especially now that I am married
and a mum. I think about how
unfair it is that she missed out on
all of it.
“I don’t think there is anyone
that was there at the time that
doesn’t think about it.”
But Murray still cherishes
the shared memories they had
together, and the good times.
She recalls passing notes in
maths class about the boys they
liked; spending hours discussing
their favourite band, Backstreet
Boys; Kirsty often biking out
to her house on the outskirts of
town; and one night, dressing up
OUT FOR A WALK:
Kirsty took Abby for a
walk about 2.30pm on
New Year’s Eve, 1998.
Abby was found tied
to a tree; Kirsty’s body
was discovered two
weeks later.
in their best clothes, putting on
mascara and lip gloss, and going
to KFC for tea.
“We thought we were the bee’s
knees,” she says.
“There are photos of her and I
from that night, and it makes my
heart happy when I look at them.”
Murray doesn’t have a clue who
killed her best friend.
But she’s hopeful that one day
they will be caught.
“It would bring some peace,
and closure – not closure to forget
about her, but that she can finally
lay at rest, as we [would] know
who took her from us.”
A GUN-TOTING cannabis
grower who killed a police dog
and shot two officers will remain
locked up, a parole board has
decided.
Christopher
Graeme
Smith, 46, was
convicted and
sentenced in
2011 for the attempted
murder
the previous
year of a police
dog handler, for
wounding a constable and killing
police dog Gage.
Gage was posthumously
honoured for taking a bullet for
his handler with the DSA Gold
Medal, which is awarded for
outstanding animal bravery.
Smith said he initially believed
he was confronting intruders to
his large-scale cannabis growing
operation in Phillipstown.
He shot Senior Constable
Bruce Lamb in the face as the
dog handler entered his bedroom.
Gage came to the wounded
officer’s aid but Smith shot and
killed him.
Gage was hailed at the time as
having saved his handler’s life.
Smith then shot Constable
Mitchel Alatalo in the leg.
Alatalo escaped out a window
and despite his leg wound,
armed himself with a Bushmaster
rifle and worked with other
officers to secure the scene until
ordered to go to hospital.
Smith was armed with a
number of weapons and it took
the Armed Offenders Squad to
bring him into custody.
He was convicted of the attempted
murder of Lamb, and
injuring with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm to Alatalo.
He received 16 months for
shooting Gage.
Smith was also convicted of
cultivating cannabis, using a
firearm against a police officer
and the unlawful possession
of a .22 calibre Stirling rifle, a
Mauser rifle and a .22 rifle
with a silencer and telescopic
sight.
His total sentence was 14 years
in prison with a minimum nonparole
period of seven years.
He made his ninth appearance
before the parole board at
Rolleston Prison in early June,
according to a decision from
panel convener Mary More
recently released to the Herald.
Smith sought via his lawyer
Rahul George to be released
from prison.
George proposed a slew of
release conditions, including full
24-hour residential restrictions,
weekly meetings with police
and a “stepped reintegration” to
society.
He also said Smith would
consent to any other conditions
suggested.
More said Smith spoke well
to the board about his time in a
rehabilitative programme and
his progress with anger management.
“He gave examples that demonstrated
he is taking on board
what he has learned and has
insight into his own anger.”
But while Smith is now in
the reintegrative phase of his
sentence, his lawyer’s release
proposal was not enough to address
his risk.
A key issue was the fact the
entirety of Canterbury was a
Victim Notification Register
exclusion zone.
As a result, he had been unable
to undertake any guided reintegration
into the community,
whose name is withheld, where
his lawyer proposed for him to
be released.
“We canvassed a number of
proposals with Mr Smith, including
transferring to a prison
outside the Canterbury region
so he could undertake some
community-based reintegration,”
More’s decision said.
“He said he is not interested in
moving.”
He will next come before the
board in October.
A KEY advisor to Phil Mauger’s
mayoral campaign is pondering
whether to try and wrestle back
the traditionally safe National
seat of Ilam from Labour at next
year’s general election.
First-term city councillor Sam
MacDonald could signal an end
to his local government career
early next week following mentor
Gerry Brownlee’s decision to
continue on only as a list MP.
MacDonald, who confirmed
he would seek re-election at the
Waimairi Ward when nominations
for the local government
elections opened on July 15,
is now reassessing in light of
Brownlee’s announcement on
Tuesday.
Brownlee, National’s only MP
in Christchurch, held Ilam since
the electorate was formed for the
1996 election until 2020 when
he was sensationally ousted by
Labour’s Sarah Pallett through a
massive swing on election night.
He continued to serve as a list
MP and the former Canterbury
Earthquake Recovery Minister is
content with that designation.
“I will not be seeking re-election
as an electorate candidate
in 2023, and so will be a list-only
candidate,” Brownlee said.
“I have no doubt National will
find a strong candidate for Ilam,
and that person will have my full
support.”
A confidante of Brownlee’s
since 2010 and the former deputy
leader’s campaign manager at
the 2020 election, MacDonald
appears the logical selection.
He expected to make a call on
which role to focus on early next
week.
A member of the right-leaning
Independent Citizens faction,
MacDonald is a staunch ally and
Meates mayoral bid
DAVID MEATES had good
The former head of
himself as “miserable”
after contracting the
mayoral race in late June, had
Meates, who has
until next Friday to lodge
a formal nomination for
the mayoralty, is one of
three hopefuls vying to
succeed Lianne Dalziel.
Burwood Ward city
councillor Phil Mauger
lodged his nomination last week,
joining fellow independent
candidate, pastor Carl Bromley.
The Wizard of New Zealand
has also expressed interest in
standing.
financial advisor for fellow city
councillor Mauger, who is standing
as an independent to succeed
outgoing mayor Lianne Dalziel.
“I will continue to help Phil
regardless of the decision made,”
MacDonald said, adding he was
torn between the Beehive and
being party to implementing
Mauger’s vision, if elected.
“Phil’s mayoralty and what he
can do for the city will be one
LUKE JONES may only be 19
but he wants to be Christchurch’s
youngest city councillor.
“I’ve always held the firm belief
that your age does not determine
your ability,” he told The Star.
Standing as a council candidate
for the Riccarton Ward,
Jones said with a chuckle: “Truth
be told, I don’t have a lot of spare
time.”
While his peers are partying,
the Canterbury University
student is out in the Riccarton
community, meeting people and
volunteering his time to fight for
the issues important to them.
Driven by his passion for the
community, Jones said he was a
“confident communicator” who
Gerry Brownlee
Although the qualified accountant
faces a dilemma, he
was unequivocal on one point:
he will not seek to remain at the
council table and then stand
down to trigger a by-election.
“I need to make it really clear
I wouldn’t get to the end of the
(local government elections)
nomination period and then
double down on both, that’s not
my style,” MacDonald said.
“I’m not going to unnecessarily
incur a cost on the ratepayer.”
Nominations for the city council
and community boards close
at midday next Friday.
“I will be very clear with the
public well ahead of that time,”
he said.
“I love the job I’m doing now
but like anything, when something
like this crops up, you need
to think about it and weigh up
what people are telling you.
strives to listen to the
community and hear
their stories.
“Despite my age, I’ve
actually worked really
hard since leaving high
school to progress issues
for my community and
on a national level as
well.”
Though Christchurch
is his main priority, Jones has
also been a lobbyist for central
government for a couple of years
and understands how the bureaucracy
works.
“I’ve actually got a lot of
experience for my age and I’m
ready to take that next step into
Christchurch City Council,” he
said.
Sarah Pallett
Phil Mauger
“There’s no secret I’ve always
had a desire to go to parliament
at some stage, I didn’t think it
would be quite now.
“People have asked me in the
past to run. The feedback over
the last 24 hours has been 50:50.
Half have said: ‘Don’t leave the
council, we need you there’, the
other half have gone: ‘Oh my
God you’ve got to go and do the
Wellington stuff’.”
MacDonald has to be nominated
by the Ilam branch of the
National Party, a process that
should be completed before
Christmas.
He was chair of the branch for
five years before being elected to
the city council in 2019.
As of yesterday, there was
only one other confirmed
nomination for the Waimairi
Ward, Laly Samuel, who is listed
as Independent.
19yo who wants to help run the city
Luke Jones
Jones has been a part
of the Riccarton community
his whole life and
believes Christchurch
is the best city in New
Zealand to live in.
“Everything from
the layout, the culture,
the shared experiences
and the growth of our
city is so promising and
something I don’t think you can
see elsewhere.”
If elected, he said his top five
priorities would be community
safety, climate action, sensible
and strong public transport
investment, greater council
accountability and better
spending, specifically in
community initiatives.
Former Christchurch man guilty
of sex trafficking conspiracy
• By Ethan Griffiths
A FORMER Christchurch man
who built an American porn
empire has admitted he coerced
young women – many as young
as 18 – into performing in videos
viewed over a billion times.
Matthew Wolfe, 40, pleaded
guilty to conspiracy to commit
sex trafficking in a San Diego
court last week – the result of
him filming more than 100 porn
videos, many with victims who
were told the content would
never appear online.
Wolfe worked alongside
childhood friend and fellow
Christchurch Boys High
student Michael Pratt to build
GirlsDoPorn, an online porn
subscription service.
Pratt remains on the run,
believed to be overseas. The FBI
is offering a $50,000 reward
for any information on his
whereabouts.
Wolfe’s guilty plea is one of
the final steps in a prosecution
that has spanned three years, led
by the FBI, which has already
prosecuted another two people
involved in the business.
The brazen trail of lies began
to unravel when 22 women,
only identified as Jane Doe 1 to
22, claimed in a civil suit they
were duped into participating
in pornography by repeated
assurances the videos would
not be available online. The
filing of the claim led to an FBI
investigation.
To persuade women to appear
in the videos, Wolfe admitted to
telling them the videos would
never be posted online, would
never be released in the United
States, and that no one who
knew the women would ever find
out about their production.
Women targeted by Wolfe said
in their civil claim that he had
promised them the videos would
only be seen by private collectors
in Australia and New Zealand.
Many of those duped into
filming were struggling
Former Christchurch man Matthew Wolfe has pleaded
guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit sex
trafficking by force, fraud and coercion.
financially and offered between
US$3000-US$5000 as payment,
as well as an “all expenses” trip
to San Diego. They were taken to
motel rooms where the footage
was filmed.
The videos were then posted
to the company’s own
subscription-based website,
while shorter versions were
posted to some of the world’s
largest pornography sites, with
the company profiting over $17
million in revenue according to
court documents.
The videos were viewed over
a billion times – a conservative
figure that doesn’t take into
account pirated copies of the
files.
According to the United
States Department of Justice,
Wolfe admitted that he moved
to the United States in 2011 to
work for Pratt, the owner of the
GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys
websites.
The pair had been friends since
childhood, growing up together
in Christchurch.
“Wolfe filmed approximately
one hundred videos, he uploaded
finished videos onto the internet,
he oversaw the company’s
financial books, and he operated
various business entities that
were used to promote the
business,” the DOJ said in a
statement.
The promises were made, in
spite of Wolfe knowing Pratt
was also operating a separate
site, pornwikileaks.com, set up
to expose the “true identities”
of women appearing in the sex
videos.
“Even after Wolfe became
aware of this, he and others
continued to assure prospective
models that no one would ever
find out about their video shoot
or learn their identity.”
In 2019, the NZ Herald
revealed Wolfe and Pratt had
been involved in the porn
industry since leaving high
school in Christchurch, founding
three porn sites in 2000.
Their business model had
surrounded teenage amateurs
who had never done porn before;
young women who “looked like
the girl next door.”
“This is the one and only
time they do porn,” the website
boasted.
Special Agent Stacey Moye,
the agent in charge of the FBI’s
San Diego Field Office said the
offending had a devastating
impact on victims.
“Wolfe lied to and preyed
on vulnerable young women,
subjecting them to years of
relentless harassment, fear, and
mental anguish,” she said.
US Attorney Randy Grossman
agreed.
“We will seek justice for
human trafficking victims in
hopes that it will help them
reclaim their lives and leave the
pain of this experience in the
past.”
Wolfe is scheduled to be
Safety concerns raised on Dyers Pass Rd
• By Tina Grumball
CONCERNS HAVE been raised
about the safety of Dyers Pass Rd
once the major roadworks under
way are finished.
Safety has not been taken into
account by the city council, a
Governor’s Bay resident has
said.
Reuben
Miller had
contacted
the city
council and
engineering
company
responsible
Reuben
Miller
daily, but had
received little
information
as to why they were removing
passing areas.
“I still have one answer
from the engineers . . . as to
why, and they said that it is safer
having consistent road widths
than having pull-over areas,” he
said.
These passing bays were
used by the copious amount of
cyclists Miller saw on the road
every day and without them,
cars were passing on blind
corners.
The second stage of the $3.4
million project to widen the road
and install more safety barriers
began on July 10.
But Miller said there was
“HEY MATE, I just seen an
article in the paper, I think I
bought your bike.”
That was the message that saw
a dad and his kids reunited with
their unique ‘bucket bike’ after
it was stolen from their home in
Waltham.
Two weeks ago Al Duncan
told Star Media’s community
newspaper Southern View he
had given up hope of finding
his cargo bike after a filed police
report and shared social media
posts offered no information on
its whereabouts.
USEFUL: The Dyers Pass Rd passing bay that will be removed.
insufficient consultation done
with the community who use it.
The city council held a drop-in
session three days earlier, where
several people expressed concern
about the amount of notification
prior to works commencing,
head of transport Lynette Ellis
said.
However, Miller noted “they
didn’t actually bring any plans
Until he received a message on
Facebook.
The person told Duncan they
had purchased the bike from
someone else for $1000, but
wouldn’t give details on who that
person was.
Duncan said he didn’t want to
risk not getting his bike back by
asking too many questions, so
accepted that he may never have
answers as to who stole it.
Duncan said his two kids
Neema, 10, and Malo, 8, were
over the moon to have the bike
returned, as they sit in the box on
their way to school.
“They couldn’t believe it, they
so they couldn’t actually tell me
what they were going to do.”
Ellis said there was no
opportunity for community
influence on design for the Dyers
Pass Rd guardrails project as it
was constrained by the “confined
terrain.”
The community had
the opportunity to make
submissions earlier this year as
were absolutely ecstatic,” he said.
Although the box was missing
and the gear leads and frame
were a bit damaged, Duncan said
these could all be repaired and
replaced.
“I thought there was no chance
of seeing it again . . . it’s quite
unbelievable really and I’m just
really grateful.”
part of Annual and Long Term
Plan processes, she said.
Said Miller: “I drive over this
hill twice a day, sometimes three
or four times . . . and you’d
think they’d be happy to talk to
someone that actually does that
regularly, and we know where
people pull over.”
An engineer himself, he did
not understand how removing
these areas made the road any
safer.
Ellis said the works would add
about 1200 sq m of sealed road
shoulder and current locations
where vehicles pulled over
informally would be removed,
while other locations would
remain.
The safety of all road users had
been considered in the design
process, she said.
“There was opportunity
provided, where site constraints
allowed, for cyclists to pull over”.
Cycling advocacy group
Spokes Canterbury chairman,
Don Babe, said that “often when
they say they’re going to make
things safer, that’s usually for
users of motor vehicles”.
Having a narrower road, with
no pull-over areas on one side
and safety barriers on the other,
meant there was nowhere for a
cyclist to go if a car was too close
or out of control.
Babe noted he had heard some
complaints about the road from
cyclists he knew.
The roadworks are expected to
be in place until December.
IF YOU, your parents, relatives
or friends were pictured
raising a glass at the Sign of the
Takahe, the image could end up
illustrating a coffee table book
covering the history of the venue.
Andrew Male, who runs the
Gothic-style Cashmere landmark,
has launched a public
appeal for photographs – preferably
monochrome – to illustrate
a publication he plans to release
before Christmas.
The Englishman started delving
into the history of the building
during the first Covid-19
lockdown the following year and
realised there was wider interest
when restrictions were relaxed.
“People would ask about the
history of the place. I’d be able
to tell them a little bit and they’d
say: ‘Have you got any books?’ or
anything like that,” he said.
“There had been flyers (leaflets)
but nothing major.”
Male did some research at
Canterbury Museum where he
accessed some old photos and
But rather than just regurgitate
facts and stock standard photos,
Male wants the public to provide
a personal touch.
“If someone got married there
and then their daughter got
married there 20-30 years later,
I’d love to hear about that sort of
stuff,” he said, adding it was imperative
the subjects were named
and there was a back story.
Male said he was particularly
interested in images from the
1950s, and even earlier if possible.
“I’d love black and white ones.
People getting married in the
1940s would be great,” said Male,
who is compiling a binder of
photos and wedding reception
schedules.
What he doesn’t need is photos
of people just standing outside
the building, which opened in
1920 as the partially constructed
Tram Terminus Rest House.
Originally envisaged as a
tearooms, the building was eventually
finished in 1948, 30 years
after the first sod was turned.
earthquakes – the city council
completed a $2.8 million restoration
project in 2017 – and Male’s
“When I first took it over
we were rip-roaring along,
it was really, really busy and
then Covid came along and it
changed the whole aspect,” said
Male, who leased the Sign of the
Takahe from the city council in
2019.
History
•The Sign of the Takahe is a
neo-Gothic style building
•Construction began in
1918, spearheaded by city
councillor and MP, Henry
George (Harry) Ell.
•Part of the building opened
to the public as the tram
terminus rest house in 1920,
•Ell died suddenly in
1934, having never seen
the building completed.
Construction of the building
continued under the
direction of architect J. G.
Collins. The city council
bought the building in 1942
and it was finally completed
in 1948.
earthquake repair was
completed in 2017.
Housing intensification not wanted
I am against housing
intensification in the suburbs.
Intensification should be in
the inner city with townhouse
developments and apartment
buildings.
I live on a small section in a
townhouse which I love and am
surrounded by people who are
retired. This is our forever home.
There is a beautiful, large
character home next to us on a
850 sq m section. If that
gets knocked over and three
townhouses of three stories go
up I will have to leave the area
and as I will lose my morning
sun, houses will be 1m from my
boundary and the owners/tenants
will look directly into my outdoor
living space.
We rented in the CBD for six
months to see whether we would
buy an apartment/townhouse
there. We decided not to and
moved to a quiet inner suburb.
I will fight tooth and nail
should a developer have designs
on my neighbour’s house – Sue
Bennetts
I live in Bishopdale where
intensification is proposed. Sadly
one development is already under
way on Leacroft St.
I fully support the views
expressed by Tony Simons of
the Riçcarton Bush-Kilmarnock
Residents Association. (The Star,
July 28.
Bishopdale has much in common
with that area.
Please don’t over-intensify Bishopdale
which is a very effective
community environment. Don’t
allow the developers too much
scope to build high, close and
minus parking. – Libby Durey,
Bishopdale
I live in Elstow Pl and already I
can see the bad effect of intensification
with two storey apartments
going up over the road at Simeon
St and obviously cutting off the
neighbour’s sun. Let alone threestorey
when it is allowable.
There are four two-storey apartments
going up at the end of
Elstow Pl and the price of $690 to
$709 which is too expensive for
poor people and will cause cars
to be permanently all over the cul
de sac.
Apparently kitset fully insulated
housing can be constructed in a
short time frame.
Changing laws which don’t actually
help poor people but jeopardise
middle income people’s
assets is hardly fair. – Liz Coulter,
Spreydon
Council assets
It is interesting that The People’s
Choice candidates for the coming
elections have raised the issue of
sale of council assets.
This is just like the Government
which is on the back foot on so
many issues and now the PM is
talking about foot and mouth,
and hosting the Commonwealth
games in 2030 something.
I am only in favour of selling
assets if they are not producing
the results that they should be
and as Phil Mauger said why are
we holding onto land that is not
being used. I am sure there is no
plans to sell either the airport or
the port company but as all good
business people will agree it is
prudent to look at all your assets
from time to time and if as I said
they are not producing then they
need to change or be disposed of.
Keeping hold of all assets as
The People’s Choice candidates
seem to want is not good business
practice but what is new with
a Labour backed council. – R
Lucas, Papanui
I would support selling some
land-only assets if absolutely necessary.
Definitely would not support
selling our excellent income
producing assets, such as the
airport, the port and Enable, that
would be economic madness. –
Julie Duthie, Burwood
John MacDonald
I read John MacDonald’s piece on
ratepayers funding Government
bribes, and do not understand.
Is he saying that the ratepayer is
not paying for their local authority
costs to objectively decide on
behalf of the ratepayer over the
Three Waters proposal, and the
Government has to stump up for
this?
Or is this as he seems to allude
to that the Government sees fit to
send an associate minister to deliver
compensation for an inequitable
arrangement and to further
assist in some way or form?
I thought we lived and operated
in a democratically free society,
where there was separation
between local government issues
and the nationally run government,
so that the local authority
effectively and fairly presented
their ratepayers’ views?
I do not understand. – Andrew
Multi-use stadium
Our city, New Zealand’s second
largest in population, is to get a
magnificent multi-use stadium
but with the lowest seating capacity
of any major city.
Ratepayers were given a say,
but not a vote on its cost or
name. As a more recent returnee
I inquired as to how the name
came about.
Firstly the city is a Treaty
partner.
Secondly, Ngai Tahu (of charitable
status) and Mana Whenua
have a monopoly on naming
rights across the district. Their
generous gifting of names comes
at no cost to ratepayers which is a
relief, but no charitable sponsorships.
Christchurch is thus
significantly disadvantaged
compared with cities having
long-term stadium funding
sponsors.
With dual naming dropped
visitors will wonder what Te Kaha
stands for. – Gary Riggs, Shirley
Councils propose fix
to Three Waters
• By Thomas Coughlan
THE ECONOMIC case of the
Government’s Three Waters reforms,
particularly the justification for stripping
control of assets, doesn’t stack up,
according to the economic modeller hired
by councils that have banded together
against the reforms.
It has proposed an alternative that gives
more power to councils and has Māori
input at the community level, which
would walk back the Government’s cogovernance
proposal.
The main finding is that councils can
fund the same amount of investment as
the Government’s Three Waters reforms
plan, for the next 20 years without needing
to compulsorily merge water services,
impose water charges or change councils’
debt caps.
It is widely believed that the four new
water entities, which will absorb the fresh,
waste, and stormwater services of 67 councils,
will eventually fund their activities
with water charges on households.
The proposal comes in a select committee
submission from Castalia, a consultancy
that does economic modelling on
behalf of Communities 4 Local Democracy,
the group of councils opposed to
Three Waters reforms. The group counts
31 of the 67 councils as members.
The system relies on setting strong
regulations for water quality, but allows
councils significant freedom to meet those
regulated standards, without the need to
force councils to amalgamate their infrastructure
and lose control.
Councils could choose to keep their
own independent water services, like
Auckland’s council-controlled organisation,
Watercare, or they could merge the
provision of water services under a single
umbrella. It is likely smaller councils
would merge water services.
The model would mainly use Taumata
Arowai, the new water regulator created
by the Government. It would also require
economic regulation to ensure charges are
fair, given water services are effectively
monopolies. The Government had also
said it would create an economic regulator.
Castalia reckons that if existing water
rates and charges were increased by 0.6
per cent a year, below the rate of inflation,
it would be possible to fund the $97 billion
price tag of the Government’s water
reforms.
Castalia also proposed relaxing debt
caps for water-related investment. This
would allow councils to borrow more
to finance investment in water. It also
17
proposed revenue bonds, which would be
a debt instrument directly tied to water
revenue.
Another part of the model is a “resultsbased
water financing facility” or WFF.
This will be a Crown-owned entity, funded
by central government, which would make
investments in water infrastructure based
on need. This body could work along
the lines of road funding, which central
government sometimes funded based
on relative levels of deprivation. Castalia
suggested the Government fund the WFF
using the $2.5b of Crown funding already
committed to Three Waters.
Māori involvement would happen at the
level of the community and the council,
as it does with other parts of local government.
The submission noted that not every
community would want the same level of
service from its water entity.
“Customers in high-income areas may
wish to use more water for gardens and
be willing to pay to avoid sprinkler bans.
In contrast, customers in low income
areas may be happy with simply safe,
available drinking water. Some consumers
may value friendly customer service and
prompt attention to faults,” it said.
A bill that will create the four new
mega water entities which will take water
services delivery from councils is currently
before select committee. Submissions
on the reforms recently closed with
groups like the Taxpayers’ Union and the
National Party collecting at least 78,000
submissions have been submitted in opposition
to the reforms.
While most large interest groups agree
water reform is necessary, there is strong
disagreement over the Government’s
proposal, which would implement a form
of co-governance between councils and
Māori, and over the level of council control
over the four new water entities. They
will be owned by councils but they will
have very little ability to control them.
The Government’s proposal would have
councils and mana whenua represented
on a regional representative group, they
would jointly appoint an independent
selection panel, who would appoint the
entity board.
It is this structure that has caused
the most controversy. It means the four
entities are co-governed because mana
whenua have an equal stake with councils
as the group the entities are ultimately
responsible to; it also means local councils
have almost no day-to-day control over
their water services like they do now.
ARA INSTITUTE OF CANTERBURY
Virtual reality adds
new dimension to
midwifery study
Ara Institute of Canterbury has launched
a virtual reality birthing scenario that aims
to give midwifery students hands-on skills
before they head out into the real world.
The VR programme was a collaborative
project between Ara and Virtual Medical
Coaching and was a year in the making.
The full scenario takes place in a primary
birthing unit in which a woman called
Zara has arrived in advanced labour. Her
partner Philip is also in the room and the
student operating the VR can call another
midwife in to assist and oversee the birth.
The student makes decisions based on
observations, basic examinations, listening
to the foetal heartbeat and questioning the
woman.
Using VR, the student learns in a safe
environment how to support the woman
to birth her baby safely. After the birth the
placenta is examined, followed with the
after care of the baby including taking the
baby’s APGAR scores and assisting the
woman with the start of breast feeding
in accordance with the World Health
Organisation’s codes for breastfeeding.
Ara midwifery tutor Melanie Welfare
says the VR scenario is an excellent
way for students to practice their skills
and decision-making while being in a
situation that is safe and supportive.
“It’s an environment where they’re not
putting themselves, the woman or the
baby at any risk. Some of the students have
never witnessed a birth. To be able to use
VR and start to become acclimatised to
what a birth situation looks like is really
helpful for them. The VR scenario provides
a gentle way to be part of a process in a
non-confronting manner and to see how a
birth unfolds.”
Melanie says in the second year of
their degree, students work with more
complex births. “So we’re developing ways
to integrate critical situations into the
scenario. There are several ways we can
expand and grow this from a midwifery
perspective.”
The next intake for the Bachelor of
Midwifery at Ara begins in January.
Applications close on 1 September.
costs of their care. The Subsidy is
financially means assessed, and you qualify
if you have both assets and income under
certain thresholds.
Asset thresholds have increased each
year since 2005. As at July 2022, you must
have assets below $256,554 (including your
house and car) if you are single or if you
and your partner are both in care. If you
are a couple with one partner in care and
one still living in your family home, you
can choose between the $256,554 threshold
or a threshold of $140,495 excluding your
family home and car. You are also entitled
to have an amount of up to $10,000 each
set aside in a prepaid funeral or in a funeral
trust which is not included in your asset
assessment.
If you are under the asset threshold then
an income assessment is applied. Any
income you and your partner receive will
be assessed. Income received from your
assets is also included except for the first
$1,114 for a single person, $2,228 for a
couple where both partners are in care
or $3,341 for a couple where one partner
is in care. Income received from paid
employment of the partner who continues
to live in the community is also excluded.
Gifting
You are still presently able to make gifts
in the period leading up to your application
for a subsidy, but the assessment will
include “excess” gifts as part of your assets.
Gifting of up to $7,000 per couple per year
made in the five years before you apply for
a subsidy is not counted in the financial
means assessment. Any gifts made above
this total of $35,000 per couple over the five
years will be considered “excess” gifts and
will be included. However if you and your
partner are both assessed as requiring long
term residential care and are applying for a
subsidy at the same time, this limit doubles
to $70,000.
Any gifts of more than $27,000 per
couple, per year, made before the five
year period are considered “excess” gifts
and are included in the financial means
assessment.
If you are looking at making a gift
to a family member or settling assets
into a Trust, or winding your Trust up,
Harmans have a team who understand
the implications of these decisions and
how they may impact on you. We can
also assist with the completion of an
application for a residential care subsidy
and to set up a funeral trust if required.
Volunteering
in our Region
Very often what is happening in
the paid workforce is reflected in the
volunteer workforce – and just as there
are so many organisations and businesses
affected by staff shortages due to winter
ailments and COVID, so too are many of
our community organisations. Relying
on volunteers to provide much needed
responses in the community is as crucial
during ‘normal’ times as during crises, so
if you would like to lend a hand to make a
difference in your community, do contact
the Volunteering Canterbury team (or
check out the wide range of ‘volunteer
roles’ available on its website, www.volcan.
Joint issues will affect most of us at some time.
They can show up in any joint such as in your neck,
back, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees,
ankles and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surfaces between
moving bones that allows them to move freely. It
is constantly worn away and needs to be rebuilt on
a constant basis. This repair process slows down
for most of us as we age. The result is not enough
cartilage in some joints causing the joint function
to be less smooth. This is the most common form
of arthritis, called osteoarthritis, and it leads to
inflammation, pain, stiffness and reduced mobility of
the joint.
Joint pain can also be a factor in falls. Generally
joints with the most use or stress show problems
first.
Many people seek pain relief from their doctor.
The usual prescription is non-steroidal antiinflammatory
drugs, or NSAIDs, which offer pain
relief but do nothing to stop the progression of the
arthritis.
According to the British Journal of General
Practice, NSAIDs are not recommended for long
term use and are responsible for 30% of hospital
admissions, mainly due to internal bleeding, heart
attack, stroke and renal damage. Research shows all
NSAIDs double the risk of hospitalization due to
heart failure.
Supporting the body with the right supplementary
nutrients has been found to be highly beneficial in
supporting joint health for many people.
A local Christchurch company, Kiwi Natural
Health or KNH, have produced an advanced, highpotency
formula called “Joint Care Plus” to support
healthy joint function.
Inflammation of joints can cause pain and slows
the healing process. Joint Care Plus contains
turmeric, ginger and black pepper to help reduce
inflammation and pain, and enhance digestion and
absorption of its nutrients. The formula also contains
nutrients that have been researched to support joint
health, including boron, selenium, zinc, manganese,
proline and MSM, as well as the highly researched
glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride complex,
and chondroitin sulfate.
This comprehensive formula is in an easy to
swallow capsule. Due to the amount of nutrients in
the formula it is recommended to take two or three
capsules once daily to achieve a necessary amount of
each nutrient. In severe cases a loading dose of three
capsules twice daily may be used.
information is available from the natural health
advisers, medical herbalists and naturopath at
‘He’s been bloody great for our sport’
• By Will Evans
DYED-IN-the-wool Cantabrian
Reon Edwards has received the
highest of honours awarded by
New Zealand Rugby League,
becoming just the seventh
person in the past seven years to
be awarded life membership.
Edwards joined recent Canterbury
stalwarts such as John
Coffey (2018) and Frank Endacott
(2020) in having the honour
bestowed upon them from the
national body.
“It’s a huge privilege, having
been involved in the game for 42
years now,” Edwards said.
“You don’t set out to be recognised
for a life membership, you
just follow your passion and I’ve
been fortunate to find myself in
some senior roles where I’ve been
able to influence – hopefully in a
positive way – the game. It’s been
a great journey so far.”
Edwards first pulled on a pair
of boots for Marist-Western
Suburbs as a five-year-old, later
played for Eastern Suburbs, won
a CRL premiership with Halswell
in 2003 and represented Canterbury
Māori .
After calling time on his
playing career, Edwards’ path
in sports administration began
with a place on the Marist-
Western Suburbs committee.
From there, he served on the
Southern Zone board from
2009-13 and the CRL board from
2012-15 – the latter during a vital
and transformative period for
the organisation.
“Where I was with my professional
career, and I had some
governance roles outside of
rugby league as well, I enjoyed
the administration but also the
governance roles in business,” he
explains.
“And I enjoy the business of
sport – not necessarily just rugby
league, it really interests me.
We all have similar challenges,
whether it’s rugby league, netball
or union.
“Helping Canterbury Rugby
League with the 100-year celebrations
(in 2012), that was a
big event. It was a transitional
period, because we moved from
being run like a committee, to
HONOURED: Committed Cantabrian Reon Edwards has
been made a life member of New Zealand Rugby League.
my role being to create some
more governance within the
structure of Canterbury Rugby
League.
“We then embarked on a
three-year strategic plan, and
that was the first time a strategic
plan had been implemented in
the game here in Canterbury.
From there we worked on building
some good capability around
the board table and it’s continued
to grow from there. We’ve had
some good people come in after
me, quality directors, which is
really good to see.”
Edwards accepted a position
on the New Zealand Rugby
League board in 2015. At the
time, the Kiwis were Four Nations
champions before carving
out a drought-breaking Anzac
Test triumph and the Kiwi
Ferns – only recently coming
under the NZRL umbrella – were
receiving unprecedented, well
overdue exposure ahead of the
2017 men’s and women’s World
Cups, of which New Zealand was
installed as a co-host.
Edwards took over as chair of
the NZRL board in September
2017 – just prior to the World
Cup. While the Kiwi Ferns performed
superbly in reaching the
final, the Kiwis’ jarring quarterfinal
exit ensured a demanding
period for the national administration.
“The game was in a bit of
a state of crisis following the
World Cup,” Edwards recalls.
“It was a stressful, challenging
time for the game. Coming into
the role as the new chair, it was
a massive challenge – but hugely
rewarding as well.
“I’m proud of the fact that we
got the organisation through that
tough time, we reset the organisation
with the review, reset the
management and coaching staff,
and now NZRL have got some
excellent leadership in place.
“It was probably what the
game needed at the time and we
were able to take advantage of
that opportunity to turn things
around. Now we’re in a great
position financially and have set
a platform for a stronger game.
Not just at high-performance
Kiwi and Kiwi Ferns level, but
we’ve got the bones of a really
strong structure for the game
moving forward.
“We’ve still got challenges at a
grassroots level, but I think we’ve
got the right people and the right
foundations to build on.”
Edwards became a director on
the International Rugby League
board in 2018 – and he remains
New Zealand’s representative on
that board after stepping down
from his NZRL posts last year.
With international rugby
league essentially put on ice for
two seasons and the Englandhosted
2021 RLWC controversially
postponed by 12 months by
Covid-19, Edwards again finds
himself in a key administrative
role at a crucial juncture.
According to Edwards, the
years ahead are about making
up for lost time – both for the
game’s historical inaction and
the circumstances forced upon
the code by the global pandemic
more recently. He has no illusions
about the scope of the job
ahead but is positive about the
direction world rugby league is
headed.
“International Rugby League is
reliant on one source of income:
the Rugby League World Cup.
We need to see the game generate
new revenue streams and
channels,” he stresses.
“It’s about trying to build a
good four-year program so we
can go and promote that international
content to sponsors, so
then it can become a sustainable
business with multiple
revenue streams. We can put
that back into the game and the
international body becomes a
solid support mechanism for the
emerging nations.
“The first Rugby League World
Cup was in 1954 and the first
rugby union World Cup was in
1987, so we’ve missed a whole
lot of opportunities during that
time. And in the last World Cup
in 2017 we made a profit of $7
million – the rugby union World
Cup (in 2019) made over $300
million.
“Unfortunately, our game has
had some opportunities over
the years that we haven’t taken
advantage of. That’s not to say
we can’t grow the international
game, but we’re very much at a
ground zero level at the moment
and there’s a lot of work to do in
that space.
‘Unfortunately, our game has had some opportunities
over the years that we haven’t taken advantage of’
– Reon Edwards
“In terms of my role on the
international board, it’s just
been assisting the audit and risk
committee and making sure first
and foremost getting through
the Covid period, keeping the
international body afloat and
getting us through to the next
World Cup. Then we’ve got
some certainty for revenue and
income for the next four years
and we can start to build an
international calendar and commercialise
that.”
While Edwards is a heartbeat
away from the important
decisions being made at rugby
league’s highest levels, the mark
of the humble 47-year-old’s passion
and unwavering diligence
for the game he loves can be
summed up by his ongoing commitment
to grassroots footy.
Retiring as NZRL chair has
freed up some time – which
Edwards has put into lending
Papanui Tigers a hand.
“I went to Papanui High
School, I’ve got a bit of a connection
there growing up on that
side of town – and it’s been a lot
of fun engaging with the committee
at the club, and help guide
them along on a new journey.”
Canterbury Rugby League
CEO Malcolm Humm paid
tribute to Edwards in the wake
of his life membership
recognition.
“He’s been bloody great for our
sport and still is. I congratulate
him for the work he’s done over
many years – but he is still doing
that work. He’s just so passionate
about the sport and just wants to
help.”
Old rivals face-off to make league final
• By Chris Barclay
CHAMPIONS Hornby need
to clear one last hurdle to make
the Canterbury Rugby League
premiership grand final, with
Halswell now blocking their
path to a clash with favourites
Linwood.
The Panthers made the playoffs
on points differential after
drawing Papanui in the last round
and then capitalised on that
advantage by ending the Eastern
Eagles impressive campaign with
a 28-22 victory based on a strong
opening half.
Hornby led 18-0 inside the
opening quarter through tries to
Muipu Nati, Christian Fetu and
veteran Corey Lawrie.
Second rower Kolone Faalilo’s
double helped trim the deficit to
22-16 but counterpart Eti Collins’
converted try with 15 minutes remaining
at Wainoni Park proved
decisive.
Sincere Harraway, Hornby’s
Mel Cooke medal-winning MVP
in last year’s grand final win over
Linwood, scored a late consolation
try for his new club.
Linwood, unbeaten in the regular
season with a draw against
Halswell the only blemish, will
play for the Pat Smith Trophy for
an eighth consecutive year after
a convincing 40-10 win over the
Hornets.
Although there was only a
point between the sides in two
previous meetings this year, Linwood
basically booked a place in
the August 14 grand final by producing
five first half tries by halftime
at Nga Puna Wai, including
a double to wing Makarini Mohi.
Penitito Ilalio then ran amok
down the other flank in the
second spell, notching a hat-trick
to leave Linwood a win short
of avenging last season’s loss to
Hornby.
to face Northern Bulldogs in the
Gore Cup decider on grand final
day.
The Knights utilise their second
life after losing 19-10 to the Bulldogs
while the Lions had a free
pass into the preliminary final after
struggling Papanui defaulted.
Linwood’s premier reserve
side also took the direct route
to the Canterbury Cup, beating
Greymouth Greyhounds 24-14,
the West Coasters have a second
chance to make the decider when
they play Hornby, who eliminated
the Eastern Eagles with a 30-24
victory.
The Keas future also appears
bright with the men’s 18s edging
their grand final with Hornby 22-
20 at Nga Puna Wai on Monday
night.
In the women’s semi-finals
Linwood and Sydenham are
expected to face off in the grand
final after playing Burnham and
Woolston respectively on Saturday.
Football
Cashmere Technical’s Chatham
Cup reign ended at the quarterfinal
stage with Wellington Olympic
advancing to an all North
Island knockout stage through a
3-2 victory in the capital.
Lyle Matthysen struck first for
the visitors in the seventh minute
but an own goal allowed Olympic
to have parity at half-time before
they dominated the majority of
the second spell.
Olympic then took - and
extended – their lead through
a Kalian Gould penalty and
Tor Davenport Petersen before
Cashmere Technical’s prolific
goal scorer pulled one back from
the spot with only four minutes
remaining.
Cashmere Technical’s Southern
League rival Dunedin City Royals
also had their cup run ended
last weekend, when they were
thrashed by favourites Auckland
City 6-0.
Hamilton Wanderers and
Eastern Suburbs (Auckland)
also head to the semis after
eliminating last year’s runners-up
Miramar and Waiheke United
respectively.
Cashmere Technical now
switch focus to National League
qualification, which can be
sealed with a win or draw against
Coastal Spirit on Saturday.
Southern League leaders
Christchurch United face the
same relaxing scenario and have
two opportunities to earn their
necessary point with Saturday’s
clash with relegation candidate
Selwyn United followed by a
rescheduled Covid-19 postponement
with Nomads on Tuesday
night.
In the women’s four-team South
Island championship, Coastal
Spirit SAS earned home advantage
for Sunday’s final – a rematch
with Dunedin City Royals, who
they beat 3-0 in an English Park
doubleheader.
Isla McPherson, Geena Horne
and Bel van Noorden scored
for the title favourites while
Cashmere Technical head into
a third/fourth play-off against
Roslyn Wakari with confidence
after thrashing the Dunedin outfit
9-1. Jonelle Arthur spearheaded
an intimidating rout with a hattrick.
Universities progressed to the
Reta Fitzpatrick knockout final by
beating Christchurch United 2-0
on Tuesday night while holders
Coastal Spirit SAS and Cashmere
Technical played their semi-final
last night after the deadline for
this edition.
Hockey
The race for Canterbury
Hockey’s Presidents Shield will go
down to the wire with the current
top four in the men’s elite grade
all capable of heading into Championship
Cup format on a high.
Marist head into the Saturday’s
final round in pole position after
beating Hornby 4-2 in a Covid-19
catch-up game on Tuesday night.
They lead by two points from
Carlton Redcliffs and also have
the perceived advantage of playing
bottom-placed University of
Canterbury to round out their
regular season schedule.
Carlton Redcliffs lost ground
with a 3-1 defeat to Marist last
weekend and now must defeat
Harewood and hope Marist slip
up.
HSOB/Burnside warm up
for the semis with a run against
Avon.
In the women’s competition
Carlton Redcliffs will assume
ownership of the Rosebowl as
regular season leaders barring
a bizarre outcome in their final
match with champions Harewood.
They would need to lose by
17 goals for Marist, who have a
final round bye, to finish top on
percentages.
Marist squandered an opportunity
to claim the Rosebowl when
they were beaten 4-2 by Carlton
Redcliffs last weekend. Anoushka
Chiswell scored three times in
open play to take her season goal
tally to 10.
Harewood, who finish third
regardless of the outcome against
Carlton Redcliffs, blitzed winless
Southern 14-0, with Charlotte Lee
and Breana Catley both recording
hat-tricks.
HSOB/Burnside had already
secured the fourth semi-final
berth before their 3-2 victory over
Hornby.
Get adventurous in a RAV4 hybrid
IF EVER THERE was indication
of the direction the automotive
world is heading in terms of
electrification, it has to be the
decision of one of my good
friends.
You see, he’s long been a Holden
owner, and while he still owns
a classic Brougham, he has just
sold his pride and joy – a 2017
Walkinshaw Commodore SSV – a
car claimed to be Holden’s most
powerful.
Not only did that surprise me,
but his big V8 has been replaced by
a Tesla and a Toyota RAV4 hybrid.
I know my friend is sorry to see
the Holden go, but he says that
with changing times and being
in the professional field he felt
he needed to set an example and
drive something less taxing on the
environment.
Now, I’m not knocking his
choice of new transport and, as it
turns out, the RAV4 hybrid is on a
shortlist of models my wife and I
are considering as we contemplate
the purchase of a new car. But the
point I’m making is that the buying
public is well aware electric vehicles
and hybrids are taking control of
the new car market. Toyota claims
the RAV4 hybrid as one of its best
selling models, often selling second
to Hilux on a month by month
basis.
Bear in mind too, that you don’t
have to buy the RAV4 with Toyota’s
hybrid synergy drive system,
conventional driveline variants are
included.
The RAV4 hybrid line-up has just
been extended. Two new models
have been added – Adventure
and XSE. Just like its non-hybrid
stablemate, the Adventure gets a
body kit and interior treatment that
makes it stand out markedly from
the rest of the range. If you like
bold and brash it is the car for you,
large fenders, aggressive bumper
and grille, and big wheels are there
to tempt. Inside, there is also bright
orange detailing.
The Adventure is in the line-up
as a point of difference, and after a
week in the car I can certainly see
its appeal, it looks a little bit rugged
and it has appeal in that way. It is
also the model that my friend now
owns.
I also genuinely believe the
Adventure model could be used as
a vehicle that would take you offroad
and into the backblocks. You
see, the RAV4 has had a fairly good
reputation for cross-country work
and just because it is a hybrid that
doesn’t change anything. The fourwheel-drive
network, along with a
slight suspension elevation, is such
that it will cope well with a bit of a
pounding on those gnarly tracks.
More importantly, I suspect it
will be the model of choice if you
are a winter sport enthusiast, I can
see many sitting in the Mt Hutt ski
field car park.
There are no surprises under
RUGGED LOOKS: The RAV4 Adventure has aggressive
styling to go along with its off-road capability.
TOYOTA RAV4 ADVENTURE: Choice of conventional or hybrid driveline.
• Price – Toyota RAV4
Adventure hybrid, $57,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4610mm; width, 1855mm;
height, 1690mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2487cc, 131kW, 221Nm,
continuously variable
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8.1sec
• Fuel usage – 5.3l/100km
the bonnet, Toyota’s 2.5-litre
hybrid system is well proven and
has become an established part
of the fuel-saving drivelines that
are now so important in a vehicle.
Without delving too deep into the
intricacies of the system it works
simply like this – the four-cylinder
petrol engine drives much like
conventional power; however, it
also charges the batteries that, in
turn, power an electric motor that
works in tandem with the engine
to supply drive through a continuously
variable transmission. The
whole system cycles constantly, the
benefit being less of a load on the
engine and, consequently, lower
fuel usage.
The RAV4 as a series has a fairly
respectable fuel usage figure, the
non-hybrid claimed to return
6.7-litres per 100km. All hybrids
are listed at 5.3l/100km, which, by
my reckoning, is a fairly healthy
figure and quite achievable. The
fuel usage readout was sitting constantly
at a respectable 6.5l/100km
during the 280km I drove in the
evaluation model. At 100km/h on
the open road the instantaneous
figure is around a thrifty 4l/100km.
I didn’t venture off-road during
my time in the evaluation car, the
weather was filthy across the plains
and I don’t like returning media
evaluation cars untidy. However, I
can report that it is a fabulous open
road tourer. It sits tightly and quietly
on the road, and when those
long Canterbury straights run out
and tight corners present themselves
the RAV4 steers directly into
a bend and the complexity of the
suspension quickly sits composed
and controls body movement.
I mentioned big wheels before,
the Adventure model gets Yokohama
tyres at 235/55 x 19in. They
are a new compound to me but
they equip themselves well with
solid feedback towards the steering
wheel and quiet coarse chip seal
movement.
All factors considered, the RAV4
hybrid is a comfortable touring
car, well it’s a comfortable car at
all speeds and circumstances, and
I guess with its $57,990 figure for
the Adventure model it is stretching
towards the luxury car market.
Bear in mind, though, the RAV4
range starts at $38,990, the hybrid
models starting at $46,990. All
RAV4 hybrids are eligible for a
Clean Car Programme rebate of
over $2000, the Adventure amounting
to $2335.69.
If you want all the bells and whistles
along with in-your-face adornments,
then the Adventure is there
for those who like to be seen, or
who like bold colours and designs.
In terms of fitment, it is a model
that wants for nothing, although I
could do without the video screen
that acts as the interior rear view
mirror, I found it confused my
senses a little. Other than that, the
RAV4 is laid out with ease of use
and it has an intuitive layout.
Toyota has made good use of
the RAV4’s generous proportions,
there are a host of storage pockets
and cubby holes that will easily
take care of those loose items that
we generally travel with, including
a tray for your mobile phone that
will charge it as you drive.
While I’ve long considered
the 2.5-litre Toyota driveline as
being the best hybrid system in
the market, so must many others,
delivery of a new RAV4 hybrid is
pushed out to around 12 months.
How that affects the decision my
wife and I are making hasn’t quite
yet come into focus, but I’m sure
if we do head in that direction the
RAV4 would be well worth the
wait.
All Welcome
Selling a property in winter may seem to
go against received wisdom, but there are
plenty of reasons why it can be a good idea.
It’s hard to ignore powerful or
compelling reasons like a change in your
work, financial or family circumstances,
or because the timing seems right. In
addition, there are several other, more
tangible upsides to selling in winter.
Firstly, there are often fewer houses on
the market so there’s less competition. Your
property is less likely to be lost in a swarm
of listings and it will be easy to make it
stand out. People who are looking to buy
at this time of year are usually highly
motivated because they need a home
sooner rather than later. The upside of this
is that you may get fewer ‘tyre-kickers’ than
in the warmer months – and increased
demand will often result in higher prices.
If you’re selling your property with a
real estate agent, you need to mine their
experience. When you’re choosing an
agent, ask them how houses in your area
sell over the colder months. It’s in their
interests to make sure the sale of your
property is as advantageous as possible;
if they think you’ll be better off waiting
a couple of months, they should tell you.
They should also work with you to work
out the best times to hold open homes
or viewings, taking in account shorter
sunlight hours.
You want your property to look
attractive, inviting and easy to look after
– and there are plenty of practical steps
you can take to make it seem an attractive
proposition on a cold winter’s day. Now’s
throughout Christchurch
the time to fix any leaks, cracked windows
or sticking doors or broken drains. All
the usual rules for preparing a home for
Should you sell your
house in winter?
sale will apply - your buzzwords should
be decluttering and deep-cleaning. If
it has good insulation and an efficient
heating system, make sure these factors
are included in any marketing. Ensure
the house is warm and dry during any
viewings.
Don’t forget that people will want to
look around the outdoor areas too -
sweep or waterblast paths, mulch garden
beds and clear gutters. If your garden is
picture-perfect in summer and spring,
consider making some photos available so
prospective buyers can see what they’ve got
to look forward to. A few colourful plants
in pots will also help brighten outdoor
spaces and a new letterbox or freshly
painted front fence or gate will do wonders
for your property’s street appeal.
Prepare well and there’s no reason why
you can’t successfully sell your property
before the weather warms up. Sell now and
you’ll hopefully have lots of properties to
choose from when you start scanning the
market in spring.
Enrolment 2023
The Board invites applications
from parents who wish
to enrol their children at
Casebrook Intermediate
School for 2023.
Enrolments can be made
through the school website.
www.casebrook.school.nz
The deadline for receipt of
applications for out-of-zone
places is 31st August 2022.
Parents of students who
live within the home zone
should also apply by this date
to assist the school to plan
appropriately for next year.
Because the board operates
an enrolment scheme, it is
required to fill any vacant
out-of-zone places by
ballot in cases where there
are more applications for
enrolment than there are
places available.
The board has determined
that 100 places are likely to
be available to out-of-zone
students for 2023.
