The Council and staff are exploring
the costs and associated implications
of installing fiber optic cable to
support the increased capacity and
higher speeds residents are
requesting. Our goal is to
understand how to improve internet
service offerings in Greenwood
work through the options, this
ARAPAHOE
ENTERTAINMENT
DISTRICT —
MOBILITY STUDY
In December 2019, the City Council
approved a new zoning overlay district
known as the Arapahoe Entertainment
District (AED). This area is located
west of I-25, north of Arapahoe Road,
east of Syracuse Way, and south of
Peakview Avenue. Since the AED’s
inception, a number of new businesses
have been part of the area’s
revitalization program. These
businesses include Pindustry, The
Grange, Shake Shack, and Starbucks.
In an effort to continue improving the
area, City Council engaged a
consultant to conduct a mobility
study. The purpose of the study is to
determine ways to facilitate walkability
and pedestrian safety within the AED
and to/from surrounding areas;
improve convenience and safety as it
relates to first/last-mile users in the
area, and reduce auto/pedestrian
conflicts that exist or may be created
with anticipated future area
development.
The study will also include the area
near the AED; Fiddler’s Green
Amphitheater, the Arapahoe at Village
Center Light Rail Station, and
connected employment centers. The
consultant will identify recommended
improvements to the physical
infrastructure (sidewalks, roads,
lighting, signage). These improvements
will be funded through business
participation and future Capital
Improvement Program projects.
I wish you a continued safe and
fun-filled summer!
EARN IT YOUTH
BUSINESS
spotlight
Is your student easily distracted with the influx of social media or having difficulty
managing stress and the pressures teens feel due to adversity, trauma, or social
media? Could your student benefit from assistance in honing their timemanagement
skills or prioritizing tasks to meet their goals? Today’s teens face
unique challenges unlike ever before. Earn It Youth bridges the gap between
academic success and life skills through executive function coaching.
Earn It Youth offers small group and one-on-one
coaching for six essential skills every teen needs to
master. Executive function and self-regulation
skills are the mental processes that enable us to
plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and
juggle multiple tasks successfully. Mindset
coaching creates a growth mindset instilling a love
of learning and resilience that is essential for great
accomplishment. Goal accountability means you
are 100% committed to completing the tasks
necessary to achieve your goals, even if the tasks
and route changes. Time management skills
include the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between
different activities to work smarter and get more done in less time. Organizational
skills create structure and order, boosting productivity. Integrated resilience skills
help students manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.
Earn It Youth was established in April 2022 by the mother-daughter team of Ann
Moore and Molly Valenta. Ann and Molly are both former Cherry Creek School
District teachers with 24 years combined experience working with students of all
backgrounds and abilities and a passion for impacting student’s lives. According to
Ann and Molly, “Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, teens have
struggled with underdeveloped executive functions skills. Normal school growth
during middle school and high school was gravely interrupted at a time when
students are learning how to deal with social pressures, increased academic
expectations, and how to navigate responsible independence.” Earn It Youth aims
to help students learn how to set goals, manage their time, and grow into a
successful high school mindset with self-confidence and resilience.
Ann taught English at Cherry Creek High School and served as a dean of students
for five years in the Cherry Creek School District. She developed an intervention
class based on an academically rigorous curriculum, which engaged critical
thinking, reading, and writing skills and empowered students to succeed in life
after high school. This curriculum is now being used in high schools across the
United States.
iconic moment exemplifies that just because you have made
GENERAL INTEREST
OUR NATURAL environment
AVOIDING HUMAN AND PET
CONFLICTS WITH COYOTES
June through November is the time of year when Greenwood
Village sees the most conflicts between coyotes and humans
and pets. Young pups born in the spring and early summer
are leaving their dens and learning to hunt and establish their
territory. Coyotes are most active during the hour before
dawn and the hour after sunset when they are looking for
sources of food.
Coyotes are not dangerous to people, but they can be
dangerous to unsupervised small pets such as cats and dogs.
They will attack small pets in your yard if they are left alone,
especially during their most active hours around dusk and
dawn. If you let your pets out after dark, be sure to supervise
them.
Here are some tips to help you avoid conflicts with coyotes in
your neighborhood:
• Never feed coyotes! Intentionally feeding coyotes is illegal
and this law will be enforced.
• Remove attractants from your yard such as pet food, water
sources, bird feeders, and fallen fruit.
• Secure trash in containers with a locking lid.
• Trim up vegetation to reduce hiding places.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER A COYOTE
The most effective method people can use is hazing to move
the coyote out of the area or discourage undesirable behavior
or activity. Coyotes that have been effectively hazed are much
more likely to develop a fear of humans and move along to a
new habitat.
Recommended Methods Of Hazing:
• Yell and wave your arms — “Go Away Coyote!” —
Stand your ground and face the coyotes. Be as big, mean,
and loud as possible. Shout in a deep, loud, authoritative
voice. Do not turn your back or run away from the
coyote.
• Use Noisemakers — Make yourself loud with whistles, air
horns, bells, soda cans filled with pennies, etc. Greenwood
Village offers air horns to residents to aid in coyote hazing
efforts.
• Use Projectiles — Show your authoritative presence by
exhibiting power with walking sticks, small rocks, cans,
tennis, or rubber balls.
• Use Repellents — Hoses, water guns, or spray bottles
filled with vinegar water, pepper spray, bear spray, or
Citronella spray such as Spray Shield are very effective for
hazing a coyote.
Don’t haze a coyote that appears sick or injured or if you
think you could be near a coyote den where pups could be
present.
WHEN TO CALL THE GREENWOOD
VILLAGE POLICE DEPARTMENT
TO REPORT COYOTE ACTIVITY
Always haze a coyote even if it seems non-confrontational,
and then call the Police Department at 303-773-2525 to
report any sightings or interactions with a coyote. The Police
Department actively keeps a record of coyote activity in the
Village which helps track the coyote population. Call 9-1-1
immediately to report an aggressive coyote.
WHERE CAN I FIND
MORE INFORMATION?
Greenwood Village has a Comprehensive Coyote
Management Plan and informational brochure available on
our website at greenwoodvillage.com/coyotes. You can also
RECREATION
REIMBURSEMENT
TIPS!
Have you enjoyed being out on the
golf course this summer or watching
your kids participate in swimming,
sports, and other fun activities? Is your
desk cluttered with receipts that you
are saving for reimbursement? Well
now is a great time to submit those
receipts before everyone gets caught up
in the craziness of back to school!
Here are some tips to understand what
agencies are reimbursable, how to
submit your request, and how much
you will get back when you submit
your form.
HOW DO I KNOW
WHAT ACTIVITIES
CAN BE REIMBURSED?
• We reimburse for two types of
entities:
1. Public recreation agencies
include municipal parks and
recreation districts, metropolitan
districts that offer recreation,
and municipal golf courses.
Please note that not all courses
that are open to the public are
municipal courses.
2. Nonprofit youth sports
agencies. If you are unsure
whether your child’s youth
sports organization is a
nonprofit, give us a call and we
can look it up.
• Agencies must be located within
the Denver Regional Council of
Governments (DRCOG) region
(Roughly the Denver metro area
from Longmont to Castle Rock).
WHAT DO I NEED
TO SUBMIT?
• A completed form (you will find
one in the middle of this
Newsletter) with a phone number
where we can reach you with any
questions. If you live in an
apartment or townhouse, be sure to
include your unit number.
• An itemized receipt showing the
activity, the amount paid, and the
date paid must be submitted for
each activity.
• Tip! Please do not use a highlighter
on your receipts.
WHAT WILL I GET BACK?
• The maximum reimbursement per
household is $500 in a calendar
year.
• You will get back 1/2 of the cost of
the activity up to a maximum of
$50 per activity. That means for
receipts of $100 or less, you will get
back 1/2; for receipts of more than
$100, you will get back $50. We
reimburse on the total cost of the
activity. If you are taking advantage
of a payment plan offered by the
agency, we do not reimburse on
those individual payments.
• For annual dues only (12 months
dues paid in advance) at a
qualifying facility — you will
receive 1/2 of what you paid up to
a maximum of $500.
HOW DO I SUBMIT
MY RECREATION
REIMBURSEMENT
REQUEST?
• Mail — your request can be mailed
to Parks, Trails and Recreation,
10001 East Costilla Avenue,
Greenwood Village 80112.
• Drop off — your request can be
dropped off at the Maintenance
Facility at the address above. We’re
always happy to see you!
• Scan and email — your completed
request and receipts can be scanned
and emailed to
ptr@greenwoodvillage.com.
You will find a reimbursement request
form in the middle of this Newsletter.
