THE SLA
Supporting everyone involved
with school libraries
The SLA works towards all schools in the UK
having their own (or shared) staffed library to
help all children and young people fulfil their
potential.
School staff and children should have access
to a wide and varied range of resources and
have the support of an expert guide in reading,
research, media and information literacy.
Established in 1937 by a group of headteachers
who recognised the need, we now have over
2,200 members and are the first port of call
for even more people who support school
libraries.
We’re pleased to continue to provide
training and access to resources to support
the running of school libraries and the
continuing development of all school library
staff, as well as advocating for and allowing
other educational staff to maximise their
understanding and use of school libraries.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
CEO
Welcome.
Thank you
for taking the
time to look
through our
CPD offer for this academic
year. There’s something for
everyone, including if you are
facing budgetary challenges
(see back cover!). The skills and
expertise of school library staff
are more important than ever,
and over the year we’re putting
on a range of training – both
virtual and in-person – to try
and make sure that everyone
in the sector has a chance to
develop their skills. If you have
training you’d like to sign up
for, or you’re able to offer your
school as a venue, please let us
know.
- Alison Tarrant
The training is very broad,
meaning there is something for
all, whether completely new or
experienced librarians
out via the post, this service is currently
available to UK schools only.

This new publication will be
particularly relevant for any education
professionals based in a primary school
planning to establish a school library, or
perhaps those looking to enhance their
existing one. Written by Dawn Woods,
and former manager of Worcestershire
County Council School Library Services, the
publication shares a wealth of experience
through chapters such as ‘What role does
a school library play?’ and ‘Setting goals in
a development plan’, as well as practical
advice on what furniture, resources and
technology are required. There is also
a useful section on using the library for
learning/information literacy, plus the
appendices include a budget planner,
Cultivating Curiosity:
Information Literacy
Skills and the Primary
School Library
by Geoff Dubber and
Sarah Pavey 2018
9781911222156 £9 / £13.50
Cultivating curiosity in children in
primary schools is one of the most
important things that we can do for them.
Developing an enthusiasm for learning is
at the very heart of human development
and a central reason for teaching
information and digital literacy, and is
a crucial focus for school library work.
With information about the most recent
primary curriculum, government initiatives
and inspection changes, this new edition
explains the importance of embedding
information literacy into a whole school
and curriculum context. It outlines and
explains research processes for children
and shows ways that teachers and school
library staff can develop and promote
information and digital literacy through
the primary school library, linking it to
classroom practice.
Developing Digital
Resources in the
Primary School Library
by Sarah Pavey
2019 9781911222200 £11 / £15
Developing, promoting, maintaining and
mastering digital resources is important
in primary school libraries for its essential
life skills impact, as well as its role in
raising the library’s profile while promoting
reading and effective information handling
skills. The curriculum now requires primary
schools to have an ICT presence, and this
publication guides the reader on how best
to utilise these resources in the primary
school library to the best curriculum and
financial effect.
Get Everyone Reading
by Alec Williams
Whilst reading is a powerful
tool for learning, it’s also much
more than that. Research shows that
children who engage with reading for
pleasure are more likely to have better
mental wellbeing than those who do not.
This free primer on reading for pleasure
serves as a guide through all the different
elements which create a reading culture,
as well as briefly touching on why reading
for pleasure is so beneficial.
Identifying Fake News:
Critical Literacy and
the School Library
by Cathal Coyle
2020 9781911222217
£11 / £15
While ‘Fake News’ isn’t a new phenomenon,
there’s still no clear definition of what it
is, or isn’t. It can be challenging for primary
and secondary school pupils to analyse
and understand what ‘Fake News’ is,
and Critical Literacy, a whole-school,
cross-curricular approach that has the
school library at the centre, can help. This
guideline looks at the historic and current
contexts of ‘Fake News’, the definition
and practice of Critical Literacy and
includes case studies and recommended
resources for school library staff.
I have always found any
of the publications I have
bought from the SLA to be
hugely beneficial.
An often unseen role of a school library
is to support the mental health and
wellbeing of students, both through the
provision of resources and as a space
where they can be themselves. While
school staff are not expected to replace
professional help, it is important that they
understand the factors that impact on
mental health and wellbeing, how certain
circumstances can increase anxiety,
and how to support struggling students.
This publication looks at why some
students experience problems and gives
guidance on how school staff can provide
assistance, together with lists of further
