Desperate bid to
rescue trapped driver
A LINCOLN man felt a sense of
dread as he ran to a car which had just
crashed into a ditch.
Cam Downs was
worried the driver
would be seriously
hurt, but soon
found the man,
believed to be in his
20s, was uninjured.
The driver said “I
don’t know what the

f** just happened,”
as Downs helped
him out of the car.
Downs told the Selwyn Times it had
been a relief to find he was okay, after
the crash happened about 8.15am on
Wednesday last week
“I was fully in panic mode, thinking:
‘I have to get this person out of
here’,” Downs said.
Downs had been driving on
Ellesmere Rd on his way to work, as a
real estate agent in Christchurch, with
his three-year-old daughter, who he
was to take to pre-school. He heard a
loud “boom noise”, then saw a “huge
puff” of dirt up ahead.

Airport
noise plan
could
restrict
housing
expansion

DEVELOPMENT of West
Melton may be restricted as
Christchurch Airport proposes
moving its air noise contour to
the township.
Development of rural land to
residential in the 50 decibel outer
noise contour is heavily curtailed,
due to the risk of residents
complaining about the noise of
aircraft taking off and landing at
the airport.
It comes as a 220-home section
of a proposed subdivision at
Rolleston has been recommended
by a hearing commissioner to be
declined, as it is in the current 50
dB air noise contour.
The airport is in the process
of reviewing this contour, and it
may move from Rolleston to West
Melton.
Because of this, developers of a
proposed 130-home subdivision
at West Melton face the threat of
having to shelve their plans.

THERE WILL be at least
three candidates vying for the
mayoralty in October’s local
body elections.
Malvern Community Board
member and former mayor
candidate Bill Woods has confirmed
he will stand, while
incumbent Sam Broughton has
now submitted his nomination,
joining new candidate Calvin
Payne in standing for the role.
Nominations for the local
body elections close on Friday
at noon.
Woods told the Selwyn Times
he was standing for mayor again
as he wanted to offer an alternative
to the status quo. He said
Payne was not offering that, as
he had said he did not want to
win the mayoralty.
“How can he be an alternative,
if he’s going to vote for
the incumbent? What a load of
tripe,” Woods said.
At the last election, Woods
was the only candidate standing
against Broughton. He polled
4485 votes, compared to 12,041
for Broughton.
Meanwhile, the two Malvern
Ward district councillors of
Jenny Gallagher and Bob Mugford
face a battle to save their
seats, with four new candidates
having been nominated in
the two-seat ward as of Friday
morning last week.
Two new candidates have also
come on board for the threeseat
Rolleston Ward, which
is the current Selwyn Central
ward with district councillors
Sophie McInnes, Jeff Bland,
Nicole Reid and Mark Alexander.
Of these four current
district councillors, none have
put in their nominations. However,
Jeff Bland has said he is not

PHONE NO HELP IN
IDENTIFYING THIEVES
Police were no closer to identifying
suspects in relation to thefts from
cars, after examining a Samsung
smartphone found by a Prebbleton
resident. Mike Morton found the
phone in the early hours of the
morning July 30, believed to have
been dropped by one of two youths
who had been breaking into his
car. It was one of a spate of car
break-ins and thefts in and around
Prebbleton overnight. A police
spokeswoman said she was unable
to go into detail about examination
of the phone, but confirmed
it had not yielded any useful
information. “Unfortunately there
is no evidence or lines of inquiry to
enable us to identify the offender
or offenders.”
PUMP STATION FOR
PIPELINE DELAYED
Construction of a pump station in
Darfield for the Darfield-Kirwee
wastewater pipeline to Rolleston
has been delayed due to global
transit issues. In a report to district
councillors asset manager water
services Murray England and water
services delivery manager Elaine
McLaren say a ship carrying the
wet-well had its sailing scheduled
for July 11, from Melbourne,
cancelled with no notice. A new
delivery route had been worked
out, one which was via Brisbane
and Auckland. Delivery was now
expected at the end of this month.

Ward of Selwyn district. I grew up in
Christchurch and graduated from the
University of Canterbury in Chemical
and Process Engineering (Hons). For
over 20 years, I’ve worked in the food,
petroleum, and dairy industries of New
Zealand. Since 2019, I have volunteered
on the Project Management Institute
of New Zealand Board of Directors.
I am also an Associate Member of
Institute of Directors. My pastime
activities include playing football, golf,
and swimming, and I enjoy getting
together with friends and family.
The fresh perspective I will bring to
council comes from the passion I have
for our community and for turning
concerns into action that improves
the community’s wellbeing. We are
fortunate to live in a rich, natural
environment however, we need to work
together to protect our natural capital
and to work towards a more sustainable
lifestyle. My background in the
sciences and project management will
inform how I support our community
and address difficult challenges like
climate change that will affect future
generations. If elected, I will work with

that are important to them and work

Updated contour under review by experts

Meanwhile, the district council
will make a decision today
on whether to accept hearing
Commissioner David Caldwell’s
recommendation to approve Plan
Change 71, but not allow deferred
zoning of a 220-home section of
it, due to the air noise contour in
the area.
The PC71 rezoning plan change
application was from Four Stars
Development Ltd and Gould
Developments Ltd, for altogether
about 660 homes on about 53ha
at Rolleston, bounded by Levi Rd,
Lincoln Rolleston Rd and Nobeline
Drive.

‘You never want to see something like that’
smash the window, and found
an umbrella. When he got back
to the car, umbrella in hand,
the driver motioned to him to
try opening the door from the
outside, which was what he
did.
Balancing on the muddy bank
of the ditch, he held the door
open with one arm, using the
other to grab the driver, and
helped the driver out.
Soon more than 10 passing
motorists had stopped, including
a nurse. As they assisted at the
scene, it appeared both drivers
were okay and uninjured.
Downs said he continued on
his merry way to his daughter’s
pre-school and work, only having
been held up for about 20
minutes.
“You never want to see something
like that, but it was quite
good to be able to help out,”
Downs said.
A St John spokesperson said
that while it was notified of the
incident, no ambulance was
required.

Drop in property prices ‘not a slump’

SELWYN’S average property
value has dropped 2.7 per cent in
the last three months, reflecting
a nationwide trend.
Figures from the latest
OneRoof-Valocity House Value
Index show the average value
remained more than $1 million,
but only just, at $1,001,000,
which is $28,000 lower than the
previous quarter.
The district reached the
all-time high of more than $1
million earlier this year.

it was now a market favouring

“It’s just a normal market.
Instead of 44 per cent up on 10
years ago, prices are only up 41
per cent up,” Shefford said.
“There’s good buying to be had
out there if you are a buyer. We
are still seeing many good results
for well presented, well priced
homes.

median values reported by the
Real Estate Institute of New
Zealand. Median values for
Selwyn peaked at $895,000 in
March, before dropping for two
months in a row then bouncing
back to $852,500 in June.
At the same time, Corelogic’s
House Price Index has shown
house prices nationwide are
falling at the fastest rate in more
than a decade, and at the fastest
pace since the Global Financial
Crisis.
The OneRoof data show
Rolleston and Springston had
the biggest drops for Selwyn
in the quarter – 3.4 and 4.6 per
cent respectively. Dunsandel and
Leeston dropped 0.2 and 3.3 per
cent respectively.
Some Selwyn areas bucked
the trend, climbing in their
average value, including
Prebbleton by 2.2 per cent, West
Melton by 2.4 per cent, Darfield
by 0.9 per cent and Lincoln by
0.3 per cent.
During the same quarter, to
the end of July, the nationwide
average property value dropped
BUYERS’ MARKET: The vendor is seeking $1.3

prices climbed slightly during the quarter.
3.6 per cent to $1,053,000, while
Canterbury’s average property
value dropped 0.4 per cent, to
$789,000.
Head of valuations at
OneRoof’s data partner Valocity,
James Wilson, said record-high
inflation and rapidly rising
interest rates were among
contributing factors. Selwyn was
among the majority of territorial
local authority areas in negative
growth territory.
“(It is) a sharp turnaround for
a housing market that was still
growing across all parts of the
country at the start of the year,”
Wilson said.
“However, Selwyn prices are
still 21.8 per cent higher than
one year ago, unlike some areas
such as Wellington where the
slump has reversed gains made
in the second half of 2021 and
early 2022.
“On the flipside, the low
unemployment rate of 3.2 per
cent and strong GDP growth of
5.2 per cent both provide some
buffer against values crashing,”
Wilson said.

Decision pending on new supermarket

A DECISION is pending on
whether Foodstuffs will gain
resource consent to build a
Pak’nSave at Rolleston.
Hearing commissioner David
Caldwell heard from Foodstuffs
and supporting experts at a
hearing last week, alongside
submitters.
In 2020,
Caldwell
turned down
resource consent
to build
a Countdown
at Lincoln,
David Caldwell
finding there
were adverse
effects on
local residents and the wider
environment. That application
attracted 72 submissions, the
majority in support of the development.
About 50 submissions have
been received for the Pak’nSave
Rolleston resource consent application.
Foodstuffs is proposing
to construct the supermarket at
157 Levi Rd.
Opposing submitters said
there would be an increase in
traffic congestion, noise from
heavy vehicles and the supermarket’s
mechanical services
plant and car park, visual effects
from signage, light spill from
external lighting, and adverse
effects from earthworks during
construction. They proposed
alternative locations such as in
the industrial Izone area.
“As a resident of Beaumont
Drive, it is extremely hard to
exit and turn right on to Levi
Rd. The speed of the traffic coming
off the Lincoln/Rolleston
roundabout heading to Weedons
interchange is very dangerous,”
said Shane and Donna Webb,
adding that increased traffic
would make the problem worse.
“Levi Rd is a unique part of
Canterbury where there is an
unspoiled vista of the Port Hills,
with the bold branding associated
with the supermarket chain
I have a concern this may detract
from this vista similar to the
Mitre 10 issues in Ferrymead,”

said the new supermarket would
mean cheaper groceries and
more choice in the town.
“I feel this is a great location,
and with Rolleston growing and
cost of petrol rising those in the
farming community will value
bulk buying closer to home,”
Tracey Gonzalez said.
“Levi Rd may become a little
more congested, but there
are many ways into Rolleston
central now. Countdown and
New World do not cut the mustard
when it comes to supply,”
Dwight Fray said.
Foodstuffs property development
manager Rebecca Parish
was among those speaking at the
hearing. She said in written evidence
before the commissioner
that prior to obtaining the land,
the company had been seeking a
site in Selwyn for 12 years.
“There are no suitable sites
large enough in the town centre,
or any other commerciallyzoned
areas in either the operative
or proposed Selwyn District
Plans in Rolleston or Lincoln,”
she said.
Foodstuffs would be mindful
of neighbouring homes, using
setbacks at the residential interface
for acoustic purposes and to
provide an attractive edge.
The company had made
further modifications to its
plans since viewing sumbitters’
concerns, including additional
landscape screening, reduced
corporate colours, and reduced

signage which would not be lit
between 10pm and 7am. In addition,
the design would ensure
deliveries were convenient and
safe, with unloading as fast as
possible as not to adversely affecting
neighbours or customers.
Parish said the site was serviced
by arterial roading and
located on routes suitable for
large delivery vehicles.
The new supermarket would
employ 260 people permanently,
while offering customers choice
and generating competition in
the grocery sector.
“The possible future establishment
of the consented Costco
Wholesale membership warehouse
in Rolleston Izone would
provide a different offering, and
would not impact the predicted
demand or time frame for the
Pak’nSave Rolleston,” Parish
said.
Caldwell needs to make a
decision on whether to grant
resource consent within a
15-working-days statutory time
frame following the close of the
hearing. He is likely to close the
hearing once he has undertaken
a site visit and confirmed he has
all the information he needs, following
the in-person part of the
hearing held last week.
One he has made a decision,
there is a right of an appeal to
the Environment Court for the
applicant or any submitter.

Loving husband desperate for
Ellesmere Hospital to reopen

EIGHTY-NINE-year-old Tom
Tyler has a broken heart.
He has not been able to bring
his wife, Helen, home to Leeston
since she was forced to move out
of the district in March.
Helen had been a resident of
Ellesmere Hospital for about
three years when the hospital
closed, alongside Darfield and
other Canterbury country hospitals,
due to health staff pressures
in the Covid pandemic.
Health authorities said at the
time the hospitals were expected
to open within six weeks of Omicron’s
peak, which happened in
April.
Tom, and Helen’s daughter
Amanda, said they were not
only desperate to see the hospital
reopen, but were desperate for
answers from Health New Zealand
as to when this might be.
“At the end of the day, we are
just missing each other, and
that’s the hardest part,” Tom
said.
“It’s hard on Helen, it’s been
hard on both of us.”
Helen is bedridden due to
having suffered a stroke, needing
hospital-level care. She is now in
Rosebank Rest Home and Hospital
in Ashburton.
Tom said every time he has
to leave after visiting her in
Ashburton, he gives her a kiss
goodbye, and will often see tears
in her eyes.
“It breaks my heart. I love her
to bits, we have had such a great
relationship and now we are just
waiting for the day when they
open the hospital down there
again.”
His visits to see Helen had
been cut back dramatically due
to the travel distance. Their
marital home is in Leeston, just
a minute’s drive from Ellesmere
Hospital. When she was there,
every single day he would drive
there and bring her home for
two-and-a-half hours.
“A lot of the time we would
just sit there and have something
to eat, just being in each other’s
company was great, in our own
place, that’s the big thing.”
Sometimes he would take her
in her wheelchair around the
town of Leeston, where they
would bump into locals they
knew and chat away. Other times
they would drive to Te Waihora/
Lake Ellesmere, to look at the
views.
Tom said on the advice of
his GP he can not drive as far
as Ashburton, so relies on a
community driving service and
family. This means he gets to see
Helen for about one hour once or
twice per week.
Health authorities are
planning on re-opening
Ellesmere and Darfield
hospitals before the end of
the year.

Amanda said she had asked
Health New Zealand and the former
Canterbury District Health
Board many a time, via phone
calls and an online submission
form, when the hospital would
be re-opening, but had not heard
back.
She said Ellesmere Hospital
was a beautiful building in beautiful
grounds. Country hospitals
in general were unique, and both
Ellesmere and Darfield needed to
remain open.
“They keep people’s loved ones
in the community,” Amanda
said.

Competition an opportunity for
PASSIONATE: Gabby Sanders has always had an interest in cooking and says food can be used as a way to bring people together.
Gabby Sanders is travelling
to Australia to compete for
a golden chef’s hat award.
Reporter Emily Moorhouse
talks to the former Lincoln
High School student about
her unlikely favourite foods
as a child, her thought
process behind a successful
menu and why she is
passionate about cooking
GABBY SANDERS remembers
trying to help her mum in the
kitchen when she was a little girl
was probably “quite annoying”.
But fast forward 20 years and
that curiosity in the kitchen has
paid off – next month she will be
in Melbourne representing the
South Island in the grand finals of
the 2022 Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat
Award.
Sanders, 23, won gold at the
regional heats to qualify for the
grand finals, held at Ara Institute
of Canterbury, where she is
studying towards a diploma in
cookery level 5.
She received gold for her twocourse
menu of hoisin glaze pork,
black vinegar dumpling and
umami broth and a dessert of chai
spice cake with pear, coffee, pecan
and white chocolate.
“It was surreal, it didn’t actually
feel real because I wasn’t expecting
it to happen at all,” Sanders said.

and celebrate the artwork of our High School aged
students at an Exhibition and Awards presentation
which take place over the weekend of 13th/14th
August. This event was first held last year and
exhibited a genuine concern for the issue of Waste
along with high standards of work.
It has been a difficult year for schools and students
but a pleasing number of them have taken the
time to complete projects that will showcase their
alternative view of “rubbish” in Art form. This year
Lincoln Envirotown has been very grateful to the
Selwyn District Council’s Arts and Community
Services Team who have enabled us to provide this
event at the relatively new and eminently suitable
venue of Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston. This move will
enable students’ efforts to be viewed by a wider
public.
Awards and prizes will be presented at 1.00pm on
Saturday 13th August by Mayor Sam Broughton.
Exhibition to the public will be for whole weekend
13th/14th in Te Ara Ātea, Rolleston.

passionate junior chef to shine
She had competed in the heats
last year, narrowly missing out on
bronze so wanted to really push
herself this year.
Sanders will be competing
against 12 other chefs, with
one other chef from the North
Island and the rest from all over
Australia.
The winner will be awarded an
AU$10,000 cash prize, something
Sanders said would be an amazing
opportunity to help expand
her cooking equipment.
“I’d be able to go out and immerse
myself in the food culture
in Christchurch and around New
Zealand a wee bit more which
would be fantastic as well.”
While Sanders has always had
an interest in cooking, she never
considered it to be her professional
career.
After leaving Lincoln High
School, Sanders worked full-time
at a supermarket, still figuring
out what she wanted to do.
Her co-worker Jeremy, who was
going through a career change
to be a chef, encouraged her to
study cookery, so she decided to
give it a go and enrolled at Ara.
Sanders said she is still in
contact with Jeremy and he was
stoked to hear about her securing
a spot in the grand finals competition.
Sanders said her mother is an
“amazing” cook and growing up,

she was encouraged to eat like an
adult and try new things.
“We’d always be pushed to try
new things. As a kid some of my
favourite foods were blue cheese
and pâté and olives which lots of
kids don’t really enjoy.
“I really like how food sort of
brings people together, it’s something
to enjoy with a group.”
Sanders lives with her partner
in St Albans and when asked
if they enjoy her cooking she
laughed.
“You’d think so but we eat a lot
of curries and baked beans and
stuff, just general easy dinners.”
Although, she did say she’s
been enjoying cooking heavy,
richer meals during the colder
weather, such as lamb shanks and
beef stew.
She said the most challenging
thing to cook is anything she’s
unfamiliar with as it can take a
while to get her head around it.
“I think the hardest thing to
make is probably something
you’re too scared to have a go at .
. . [but] the only thing worse than
messing something up is just not
trying in the first place.”
Sanders is “hesitantly confident”
for the grand finals and
while she’s excited to give it a go,
she’s also still processing it all.
During the regional heats,
chefs were judged on presentation,
taste and the use of ingredients
down to how clean they
are in the kitchen, general food
handling and how much food
they waste.
“You’re being watched the
whole time, it’s a bit scary,” Sanders
said.
For each competition, chefs are
given a set ingredient list which
they have to build their menu
around.
Sanders said she likes to sit
down and brainstorm what flavours
would work well together
then, with the help of her tutors,
figure out the best way to execute
each piece of the dish.
“You can always tweak it and
improve it and everyone’s taste is
different,” she said.
“It’s a group effort to get
something down that majority of
people would enjoy eating.”
Sanders works on what the
dish will look like last, once she’s
nailed the taste.
“The way it tastes is the most
important because it could look
amazing and just taste awful and
there’s not much point in that.”
As for kitchen fails, nothing
sprung to mind for Sanders,
although she admitted she has
dropped and burnt her fair share
of things.
“When you mess something
up it’s how you deal with it and
make it work in the end, it’s
always a really good learning
experience because when you
make a big mistake you’re always
going to remember it and not do
it again.”
Outside of study, Sanders
works part-time at The Monday
Room as a commis chef, a job
she scored from completing work
experience there as part of her
study.
As a commis chef, Sanders
assists the other chefs with food
preparation, particularly working
on entrées and desserts, although
she said she likes to give everything
a go.
When Sanders graduates she
said she’s open to moving around
a bit and maybe spending some
time overseas but for now she is
happy where she is, doing what
she loves.

THe Hororata crosscountry
equestrian
course is closed as the
district council consults
with users over safety

closed the facility as work
is undertaken to alleviate
a number of health and

the development of the
course and walking tracks
which were opened in 2008
about 70 years old and
undergoing assessment.
“Recent rain events have
accelerated the erosion of
the soils and supporting
structures around this
pool and a full report on
the remedial action and
high-level cost report will
be presented to council in
the coming weeks,” they
said.
Visitor rates to the
facility were low at about
1500 per year, compared
to about 10,000 at both
Darfield and Southbridge
pools.

community lifestyle to a whole new level.
Flex Fitness Prebbleton is a modern, state
of the art, fitness centre that is designed
to cater for all levels of fitness. The centre
offers 24-hour access so members can work
out when it suits them.
Manager Erin Manson says the centre
“caters for all ages and is goal dependent.
It doesn’t matter what the goal is or fitness
level, there is a programme to suit.”
LEVEL UP, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND
A tiered membership is available to suit
each person’s needs, dependent on how
involved they want their fitness programme
to be at the centre. The uniquely designed
Level Up membership is a results-based
programme and a first in the fitness industry.
Level Up offers group coached classes, and
is a tailormade, specialised programme
developed inhouse by owner/operator
Mel Nunan and Joe Kelso.
Level Up is a strength and conditioning
programme, where members are individually
assessed to work out their goals with advice
on the best classes to help achieve

every three months help keep

The equipment used in the centre
is Technogym, Italian designed and
manufactured. “It’s the best gym equipment

COMMUNITY CENTRED
Mel says the centre has been carefully
planned so people new to the exercise
concept don’t feel intimated, plus there is
also a smoothie bar onsite, stocking cold
drinks, merchandise, and supplements.
“We want people to feel comfortable.”
She also wants the community to feel
ownership and involvement, and emphasises
that the centre is for everyone in the
community regardless of age or fitness level.

THERE WAS little doubt flowers
would always be a crucial part of
Courtney Chamberlain’s life.
She is a sixth-generation member
of the Chamberlain family
to live at Springston’s Hadstock
Farm and the fourth generation
of flower growers.
The farm has been in the
Chamberlain family since 1878
and, from small beginnings,
now cultivates just shy of 25ha
of spring bulbs. Daffodils are the
major crop on this land bursting
with floral beauty.
Armed with years of first-hand
experience and Bachelor of Laws
and Commerce degrees, Chamberlain
is the farm’s assistant
manager, and also assists at Miss
Feaver Florist, which has been a
Chamberlain family-run business
for 36 years.
Chamberlain, 28, is about to
put all that pedigree and her
practical experience to the test.
She has been nominated as
the Young Florist and Flower
Grower sector representative to
compete at the national Young
Horticulturist Competition in
November.
There she will compete against
finalists from the competition’s
other sectors. The sectors are:
Young Grower of the Year
(Horticulture New Zealand Fruit
and Vegetable Sectors); Young
Amenity Horticulturist (New
Zealand Recreation Association);
Young Achiever (New Zealand
Plant Producers incorporated);
Young Landscaper of the Year
(Registered Master Landscapers
New Zealand); Young Viticulturist
of the Year (New Zealand
Winegrowers); New Arborist
(New Zealand Arboriculture
Association); and Young Florist/
Flower Grower (FLONZI Florists
and Flower Growers NZ).

in young horticultural talent in
New Zealand.
Chamberlain and the other
competitors will be judged on
several challenges including
practical skills, industry expertise,
leadership ability, business
knowledge and communication.

Chamberlain continued working
at the farm. She completed her
degrees, then the professional
legal studies qualification, before
becoming fully employed in
2020 at the family enterprises.
“I manage bulbs sales, take
orders, interact with customers,
manage the website and fulfil
orders. During daffodil season
I recruit, interview, hire, train
and supervise employees. I am
also involved with bulb production
throughout the year from
digging, washing, grading,
preparing the ground and planting
bulbs to caring for the bulbs/
flowers as they grow,” she said.
“I enjoy the rewarding nature
of flower growing, it can take
years – even generations – to
build up a strong line of a
particular variety, but I take
great pride in growing and
selling a variety that my
grandfather started with only a
few bulbs.
“I love seeing the growth we
have achieved in our family
businesses.”
That growth looks set to
continue. There’s talk of
expanding the flower range and
having flowers blooming yearround.

While both year 13 students
at Christ’s College are “incredibly
scared of heights,” they are
committed to raising money for
the foundation by facing their
fears and leaping out of a plane
to support the Skydive4Prostate
initiative.
“We’ve never jumped out of a
plane before and skydiving has

never been on our radars,” Finlay,
of Lincoln, and Spencer say.
“But, as year 13 students at
an all-boys school, we have an
opportunity to raise awareness
about prostate cancer and

“This is such an important
issue for us as young men that we
are willing to take a leap outside
our comfort zone. We hope that
everyone will get behind us and
donate to such a brilliant cause,”
Finlay and Spencer say.
Finlay and Spencer say it’s a
once-in-a-lifetime challenge.
Definitely never to be repeated.
Their skydive will take place
in the next school holidays, late
September/early October.

family (everyone in her family

her mother, Cynthia (a professional
florist) at Miss Feaver
Florist when needed.
“I always knew flowers would
be a part of my life. I have always
loved growing them and feel
very grateful to have grown up at
Hadstock,”

the event is important for the
primary sectors of New Zealand
and couldn’t occur without the
support of official partners, supporters,
and friends of the competition.
Returning as the official
2022 partners are Countdown,

right to the customer’s
door, so rather than them
having to drive somewhere
to purchase their meat, we
go to them so it’s not just
convenient, it saves their
petrol costs too.”
The refrigerated
delivery truck doesn’t
start its rounds until
3pm, which means the
boxed meat order is not
left for an extended time
if the customer is away
at work. The delivery
areas cover Halswell,
Lincoln, Prebbleton,
Rolleston, West Melton
and Kirwee. Customers

Corey’s experience in

apprenticeship, which he
completed in 1995, and has

international team of six
butchers that won the competition
in 2014.
His retail business,

Kirsty Bentley’s best friend
haunted by goodbye

THE BEST friend of murdered
Ashburton schoolgirl Kirsty
Bentley, who was with her hours
before she disappeared, remains
haunted by her final wave
goodbye.
Lee-Anne Murray, who hung
out with Bentley on New Year’s
Eve 1998, is hopeful the killer
will finally be brought to justice,
with police offering a $100,000
reward to help solve the 24-year
cold case mystery.
Murray (née Jellyman), a
married 40-year-old mother
who lives in Christchurch, has
spoken about the impact her
close friend’s death has had on
her life.
“Unfortunately, as a teenager, I
feel I lost a lot of that innocence
and naïvety that comes with
being a 16-year-old,” says
Murray.
“I kept a lot of the trauma
pushed to the back of my mind,
until 10 years later when it
really hit me and I needed some
professional support.”
On December 31, 1998, Kirsty
caught up with her best friend
Murray for some shopping in
their hometown of Ashburton.
They lounged in the library
before going to The Warehouse
and some other shops around
town.
“She wanted to get her
favourite body spray, which I can
smell right now thinking about
it,” Murray says.
“We talked about school,
boys, the rest of the holidays,
her coming to the races with me
and dad the next day – we were
teenage girls so we talked about
a lot of stuff! I don’t have a clue
what I ate, but I remember we
had milkshakes.
“Her mood was very Kirsty,
and those that knew her know

exactly what I mean. Lots of
laughing, giggles and smiles.”
Around early afternoon,
they parted ways, thinking
they would see each other the
following day.
Kirsty, who arrived back at
the family’s South St home at
about 2.30pm before taking
her black labrador-cross
Abby for a walk, was never
seen again.
The next day, Abby was
found tied to a tree near the
Ashburton River, and the teen’s
underwear was nearby – a scene
that Detective Inspector Greg
Murton, who is now in charge
of the cold-case file and working
on a “stranger-type abduction”
theory involving a loner killer
who lived locally, believes was
staged by the killer.
Her body was discovered two
weeks later in the Rakaia River
gorge, 40km away.
Murray often recalls Kirsty’s
smile and final wave goodbye
that fateful afternoon.
“That’s stuck with me,” she
says.
“I think about Kirsty a lot,
especially now that I am married
and a mum. I think about how
unfair it is that she missed out on
all of it.
“I don’t think there is anyone
that was there at the time that
doesn’t think about it.”
But Murray still cherishes
the shared memories they had
together, and the good times.
She recalls passing notes in
maths class about the boys they
liked; spending hours discussing
their favourite band, Backstreet
Boys; Kirsty often biking out
to her house on the outskirts of
town; and one night, dressing up
in their best clothes, putting on
mascara and lip gloss, and going
to KFC for tea.
“We thought we were the bee’s
knees,” she says.
“There are photos of her and
I from that night, and it makes
my heart happy when I look at
them.”
Murray doesn’t have a clue
who killed her best friend.
But she’s hopeful that one day
they will be caught.
“It would bring some
peace, and closure – not
closure to forget about her, but
that she can finally lay at rest, as
we [would] know who took her
from us.”

SELWYN WELCOMES NEW
CITIZENS TO AOTEAROA
Kirwee Reserve open for play
The next stage of the Kirwee Reserve upgrade is now complete
with the new playground and cricket nets in place ready
for spring.
The final inspection has been completed and Project Manager,
Sandrine Carrara says the new playground has officially opened,
even though the outer fencing is staying up however while
contractors finish levelling and re-sowing the outer grassed areas.
The new playground features a basket swing, slides and a seesaw,
with facilities including shade sails, picnic tables and a bike rack.
The old playground will be removed by contractors in the next
few weeks.
The upgrade started last year when new pedestrian entrances
were added at Tramway Road. The first stage saw a cricket oval,
new irrigation, new sports field lighting and a pump
track installed.
Selwyn has hosted its first New Zealand citizenship ceremony in 12 months – welcoming 78
new residents from 14 different countries.
More than 260 people turned out at the Tai Tapu Community Centre last week to congratulate
the new citizens in a special event, organised after ceremonies were put on hold due
to COVID-19.
The ceremony featured a welcome from Mayor Sam Broughton and a kapa haka performance
by students from Tai Tapu School.
Selwyn’s newest Kiwis have come from all over the world including South Africa, the United
Kingdom, India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, and included many families.
Among them was the Colloty family from South Africa who have been in the district since
arriving in the summer of 2015. Dave Colloty says he, his wife Jolanda and their two boys were
made welcome from the day their arrived.
“We love the Selwyn District and the
country feel,” Dave says. “We’ve lived in
Prebbleton and now in Lincoln and our
boys, Geordan and Declan, are getting the
quality education they never could have
obtained in South Africa.”
Each new citizen who attended the
ceremony had already received their
official citizenship certificates in the post
– the Colloty family got theirs in October
last year – but were presented with a
special welcome certificate by
Mayor Broughton.
Many of our new citizens have been
waiting a long time due to delays caused
by Internal Affairs moving to a fully
online processing system. This means the
citizenship process can take a year or more.
If you are a resident thinking about becoming a citizen, visit the Immigration New Zealand website
as soon as possible to start the process of making Aotearoa your country, as well as your home.
Time running out for election nominations
Thinking of standing for Council, Mayor or Community Board elections in Selwyn? Act fast, as
you only have a few days left to get your nomination in.
Nominations close at 12 midday sharp on Friday (12 August).
The Council’s deputy electoral officer Stephen Hill is urging potential candidates to get their
nominations in as soon as possible.
“We know many candidates leave their nomination till the last minute,” he says. “They may be
wanting to keep an eye on who else is running – but it’s definitely risky to leave it till late.
“There are no extensions – so an early
nominations gives us time to ensure
candidates have all their details right
and have included everything on
their application.
Mr Hill says it’s been good to see
a number of first-time candidates
putting their names forward, and to
have a range of ages, backgrounds and
ethnicities represented.
“Anyone who is passionate about the
future of Selwyn, who wants to make
a difference in their local community
and to help shape the district’s future
should consider standing.”

Friday is also the last date for voters to enrol to receive voting papers by mail – people can still enrol

Driver behavior identified as focus
for road safety
There’s a drive to encourage motorists in Selwyn to pay more
attention on the roads.
Selwyn’s road safety team is urging drivers to pay better
attention to the quality of their driving – with poor observation by
drivers identified as a major factor causing crashes.
Statistics from police crash reports show what factors contribute
most to fatal and serious injury road crashes – with driver
inattention a major cause of accidents in the district.
Data from the last 10 years shows there were 344 serious
crashes in the district in which 447 people were killed or
seriously injured.
Council’s Road Safety Education Advisor, Mike Patterson, says
in almost every serious crash the drivers’ actions were a primary
contributing factor.
Poor observation and distraction were by far the biggest
contributing factors to serious crashes, followed closely by
alcohol and failing to give way at intersections; and more than
half the accidents involved male drivers on full licences.
Nearly half of the serious accidents happened at intersections
and 43% happened on rural or state highways where the speed
limits are 80kph or more.
Mike says the overall message is for drivers to change their
behavior: plan ahead, stay alert, slow down, and drop back.

Darfield Kirwee Wastewater Pipeline
Courtenay Road in Kirwee, from just south of the railway line to SH73, remains closed
until early September. Vehicle access between Kirwee and properties to the south is
via a detour along Bealey Road. Pedestrian access is available from Courtenay Road
direct to the township. The closure is for the installation of pipes under the railway line and will be
the last one required as part of this project.
From Wednesday (10 August), SH73 south of Kirwee will have traffic lights in place for the next
two weeks while pipe laying is undertaken. The lights will be in place from 9am Wednesday and
will be removed for weekends, coming down from 4pm Friday – 9am Monday. Our contractors will
be monitoring wait times through these works to minimise delays as much as possible.

Weedons Ross Road seal widening
The road is now fully open to two-way traffic from Kingsdowne Drive to Maddisons Road. A
shoulder closure is now in place for Orion contract works, on the Newtons Road intersection
through to end August. Manual four-way stop/go will be required on some days. Please follow
signs and controls for the safety of all road users and workers.
Other repairs and upgrades
Flood repairs are taking place around Hororātā and on Whitecliffs Road from
Flagpole Road and Algidus Road from Homestead Road.
The Armco barriers are being repaired on the Selwyn River Bridge on Bealey Road
and on Tancreds Road at Raineys Road.

in helping the Rolleston community and

his knowledge, including working
towards a Post-graduate qualification in
Occupational Physiotherapy.
Evexias welcomes
new physiotherapist
Rowan to the team
Another team member, Phillipa Horne (Co-Director), confirms
her approach is about finding the cause, not just treating the
symptoms. Growing up she was the “one that helped the kids on
the playground”. From there, it seems she naturally progressed into
physiotherapy. Phillippa previously came from a rural practice in
the North Island, covering a diverse range of people and conditions
but has been based in Christchurch for ten years. Phillippa says,
“People around me had headaches and migraines and were
struggling with them.” In 2016, she decided she “wanted to go into
an area where I could make a difference in people’s lives”. After
training with Dean Watson in Australia, Phillippa developed her
skills in treating migraines and headaches. After working in a clinic
that only treated headaches and migraines, she consolidated her
skills and has completed over 3500 hours in that speciality field
since then. Phillippa would eventually like to expand the services
at Evexias by providing a headache clinic and branching into
concussion services.

KIWI ENTERTAINERS
Lynda and Jools Topp have
spoken out about their “hard”
journey with cancer, thanking
their fans across the world for
the support and love.
The Topp Twins announced
in March that they were both
fighting breast cancer.
Jools was diagnosed with
breast cancer 16 years ago and
after having chemotherapy,
went into remission.
However, this year she
discovered that her cancer
has metastasised, and started
radiation therapy.
In December 2021, Lynda
was diagnosed with grade 3
invasive breast cancer.
She underwent a double
mastectomy and started a harrowing
six months of intensive
chemotherapy.
The famous sisters spent
more than four months apart
during their treatment due to
the Covid-19 pandemic but
managed to get together for
their recent birthday.
Last week they posted an
update on their Facebook

“It has been eight months
since Lynda was diagnosed
with grade 3 breast cancer and
six months since Jools was
discovered with a new tumour
in her rib cage,” they said.
“We are both alive and
kicking but it has been a
pretty hard journey of surgery
chemo and for Jools radiation
therapy.
“The love and support we
have had from Kiwis and fans
around the world has been
amazing and we thank each
and every one of you who have
sent messages and donated to

ZACH TUCKER has accelerated
past another career goal, with the
talented Prebbleton kart racer
winning overseas at the first
attempt.
The 11-year-old kept his nerve
after being overtaken late in final
of his cadet 12 class at the City
of Melbourne Titles on Sunday,
coolly executing a passing manoeuvre
as the chequered flag
loomed at the end of 17 hotlycontested
laps.
Zach, who represents New
Zealand at October’s ROK
Superfinal in Italy, qualified in
pole position at the culmination
of two days of racing in his
36-strong division.
“There was lots of pressure. I
led all the way until the third to
last corner but I passed him back
on the hair pin with one corner
to go,” he said.
“I’m very proud of our team
and I really appreciate all the
messages of support from friends
and family,” he said.
Zach qualified to race in Italy
after defending his Vortex Mini
ROK national title in Wellington
in June.
Before racing overseas for
the first time, Tucker also secured
his first national schools
title in Invercargill, claiming
the Vortex Mini ROX crown last
month.
Zach’s coach Matt Hamilton
was convinced the Medbury
School pupil was destined to
achieve his long-term goal of
emulating Shane van Gisbergen
and driving across the Tasman
in the Supercars Championship.

double at Addington Raceway
on Sunday.
Earlier in the week the
dual code trainer claimed the
gavelhouse.com Newcomer to
Training Award for his deeds in
thoroughbred racing, fulfilling a
lifelong passion.
Fresh off the high of receiving
the award, House was pleased
to visit the winner’s circle at
Addington Raceway twice on
Sunday courtesy of Maximilian
in the King Of Swing Standing
At Cobbitty Equine Mobile Pace
(1980m) and Santanna Mach
in the Locharburn Standing At
Phoebe Stallion Handicap Pace
(2600m).
It was the third win of the
season for Maximilian, a gelding
House races in partnership with
Bruce Negus, and he was happy
to reward his fellow trainer with
the victory.
“S Wigg in an amateur race,
off the front, he was always going
forward. He tried to throw
it away but he won the race,”
House said of Maximilian.
“Bruce Negus and I have won
a lot of races together. He is a
great guy and has been rewarded
for his desire to have horses
racing.
“We will just see what happens
over the next few weeks. The
programme is a bit average for
the low-grade horses, they are
all jelled in and mixed up. It is
pretty hard to be tactical in what
you do.”
Later on the card House
was back in the winner’s circle
welcoming back Santanna Mach
after his 13th career victory.
“He is one of those horses we
play snakes and ladders with
and he found his race today,”
House said.
“He will hopefully get another
100 starts and 13 wins over the
next couple of years.
“He is very sound and easy to
train. He will be around for a
long time that horse.”
Reflecting on his Newcomer to
Training Award, House said he
is realising his dream of training
thoroughbreds, his initial passion
in racing.
“It is testament to great staff. I
am living my dream a little bit.
I probably should have been in
thoroughbreds from the start,”
House said.
“My passion is the thoroughbreds.
When I was 15, I knew
I was going to be too big to be
a jockey, so I went to a harness
stable.
“I have only done this (train
thoroughbreds) because I have
got two beautiful fillies that I
have bred out of Ombre Rose,
a Group One mare that we
raced.
“I was desperate to train a
couple of her progeny. We sold a
lot of foals out of the family and
have made good money out of it,
and I wanted to stay in, so I bred
to affordable stallions in Zed
and Zacinto.
“That is my future in
thoroughbred racing, plus
whatever horses we buy off
gavelhouse.”

Chris Cairns reveals life
lessons after brutal year
CHRIS CAIRNS has
opened up on what he’s
learned 12 months on
from a serious health scare
that he says “would impact
every aspect of my life”.
The 52-year-old former
cricketer and Cantabrian
suffered a life-threatening
heart attack last year,
resulting in an aortic dissection,
or a tear in the
inner layer of the body’s
main artery.
He also suffered a spinal
stroke and received a cancer
diagnosis just months
later.
Following multiple surgeries,
rehabilitation and
chemotherapy, Cairns took
time to reflect on the last
year in an Instagram post
he labelled “reflections
from 12 months on”.
“It is a year today that I
was admitted to hospital
with an aortic dissection,
an event that would
impact every aspect of my
life (and those around me)
in ways I never imagined
possible. As I reflect on all
that has happened there
are three key takeaways
that I will carry forward
with me,” he wrote on the
social media platform.
“1. Set the direction,
not the destination. I now
use a compass to navigate
rather than a GPS, setting
my North Star towards
where I am heading, but
very alive to the fact that
there will be unintended
stops, delays and some
rerouting.
“2. Life is what happens
between the plans you
make. Mel (Cairns’ wife)
reminded me recently that
I needed to stay present.
I have always been guilty
of focusing on the future
and rushing to get where
I was going. Saying things
like ‘once XXX happens,
then it will be the start.’

I’ve also looked back and
wondered if I could have
done something differently
to avoid being where I am
today. Chemo can feel like
Groundhog Day, but I have
found that taking it day
by day (and even hour by
hour when needed) has
given me the ability to
stay in the moment and
I find that calming. It
also helps to focus on the
little things, watching the
kids play sport, helping
with homework, reading
books, dinners with family
and friends …these little
things, strung together
are no longer taken for
granted.”
Cairns finished his
thoughtful post by saying
he wants to “pay it forward”
after everything he’s
been through.
“3. Find your purpose.
You are always evolving
and who you were isn’t
always who you will be.
We often define ourselves
by what we do, but recently
I’ve been able to engage
with different groups of
people and find that my
story has an impact. Not
just the outcome of my
medical events, but the
roller coaster of triumph
and disaster that is life and
that at varying degrees
everyone encounters. I
have been told by people
far smarter than me, that
there is no medical reason
I should have survived - so
I will assume that I have
been given a gift and I will
do what I can to pay it
forward.”
In an interview with
the Between Two Beers
podcast, Cairns said he
now has a positive outlook
of life and is determined
to make the most of his
second chance.
“I’m no different from
anyone else … there’s no
secret recipe.
“It’s choice, fundamentally.
The human race is
gifted with an asset in the
mind that allows you to
choose your reaction to
any situation.
“That is the most important
thing you possess, and
at times people don’t tap
into that.
“It’s easy to be a victim,
easier for it to be someone
else’s fault … to be unlucky.
“I just never carried that
mentality. Maybe that was
through cricket or other
things in my life … that
choice aspect is always the
most important.
“Of course, I will burst
into tears or feel horrible,
but I quickly try to
transition out of that. The
key things in all of this are
choice and purpose.”

Visit Darfield
There’s nothing quite like taking a drive in the
country, especially if you are heading towards
breathtaking scenery – green farmlands and snowclad
mountains.

Darfield art and
history ramble
While you’re there take in some local art and history.
Start at the clock tower at the corner of South Terrace
and Ross Streets, cross over to the other side of the
street. Then head east along South Terrace (the main
street) past the shops. If you’re visiting on a Saturday
morning, chances are you’ll find the local market set
up along the green common near the railway station
selling a variety of crafts, plants, books and goods.
Continue along until you reach the historic 1915
jail, further along you’ll find the town’s muraled toilet
complete with painted images of local mountain
ranges gracing its exterior walls. Continue until you
are opposite Darfield’s Te Huanui Gallery – after you’ve
enjoyed a visit to the gallery, continue your walk back
towards the town centre. Stop when you reach Tussock
Square and take some time to check out the bronze
plaques, crafted to depict the history of Darfield.
Take a leisurely walk back to the shopping centre and
enjoy some time shopping or finish off with a coffee
or a meal at one of the local cafes. While you’re in the
town, don’t forget to try one of Darfield’s famously big
ice creams from the local dairy.

Hidden
talents
emerging
in Malvern
Selwyn is known for its creative
communities and none more so than
in the Malvern area. Here you’ll find
writers and authors, both published and
unpublished, tucked away in the foothills
and plains, most likely bent over their
computer, tapping away, honing their craft.
A new group called the Malvern Writers’
Café created a year ago has taken off
with 14 members on its email list so far.
The purpose of the group is for writers
and authors to come together, share
their expertise, publishing experiences
and resources plus support one another
through the writing journey.
The group meets on the second Tuesday
of each month at the Darfield library from
10am to 12pm to discuss their work in

progress and set up writing challenges
for the following month. Genres covered
but not limited to by the group include
children’s books, travel, romance,
historical, women’s fiction, contemporary,
biography, plus short stories, flash fiction
and poetry.
Spokesperson Fi Maddison says the
group is also about creating an awareness
of the writing talent in the area – some are
yet to come out of the cupboard – while
others are giving it a go for the first time
or have already been writing for a number
of years. It doesn’t matter what stage
people are at, the Malvern Writer’s Café
offers writers of fiction and non-fiction a
friendly, supportive and non-judgmental
environment.
The Malvern Writers’ Café has just run
its first one-day mini writing retreat, which
included speaker and author Alyse Boaz,
who presented a two-hour workshop on
marketing in the morning, followed by
lunch and dedicated writing time in the
afternoon. There are also plans to host
author readings; run writing competitions
open to the public and to showcase and
sell locally authored and published books
within the township and further increase
the awareness of local talent to the reading
community.

Darfield via train on 19 January 1954,
as part of their New Zealand Royal
Tour. According to A View From
Tussock Square written by Margaret
E. Knowles, the train missed the red
carpet for the Queen to step onto the
platform by “a yard or two”. Children
from the local Malvern schools waited
in great anticipation to greet the Queen,
waiving small British flags and the local
Horticulture Society decorated the arch
at the end of the railway with flowers in
honour of the Queen’s visit.

GARDENING
Spring is around the corner – prepare now
MANY GARDENS are
resplendent with the
flowers of azaleas, camellias,
rhododendrons, and flowering
cherries this month. The fact that
spring is close provides some
comfort during this cold, wet
month when we are all tired of
winter.
House plant care
Winter can be a difficult time
for many houseplants, those that
have survived to August are pretty
robust and/or have been lovingly
cared for! The key aspects of
houseplant care over winter are,
good light, a warm environment,
sufficient water (but not over
watering), misting of foliage and
regular inspection to check for
any early signs of problems.
Vegetable garden
Keep harvesting your winter
vegetables including broccoli,
brussels sprouts, cabbage,
cauliflower, carrots, kale, leeks,
lettuce, parsnips, rhubarb, silver
beet, spinach, and turnips.
Replant seedlings of broccoli,
cabbage, kale, lettuce, silver beet
and spinach to ensure supplies
of these vegetables in spring and
early summer. Seeds of traditional
summer vegetables can be sown
into seed trays and kept in a
glasshouse.
In the flower bed
Winter flowering annuals are
now near the end of their
best displays. Calendulas,
cornflowers, pansies,
snapdragons, stock, violas, and
wall flowers all provide excellent
late winter flowering. Top up
any plantings with potted colour,
such as winter annuals grown to
flowering size when available for
sale.
Blooming bulbs
Numerous bulbs flower this
month, providing a delightful
burst of colour and fragrance in
the winter garden, these include
daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths,
muscari, and lachenalias. Other

Strawberries
Even though it’s winter, existing
strawberry plants will be growing,
and producing flowers towards
the end of August. These flowers
should be removed as the fruit
that forms will not grow to
maturity. Remove any weeds that
appear among the strawberry
plants as they compete for water
and nutrients. If you haven’t put
any strawberries in yet, it’s not too
late! You can source established
strawberry plants from your
local supplier and plant through
until early spring for a bumper
summer crop.
Fruit trees
A prolific month for harvesting
a number of citrus fruit such as
lemons, limes, late mandarins
(clementine), navel oranges and
grapefruit. Remember to give all
pip and stone fruit trees a spray of
copper oxychloride to help reduce
an outbreak of fungal diseases in
spring.
Feijoa trees can be pruned by
thinning out dense branches.
Allowing better light and air
movement through the plant
leads to improved fruiting.
Container gardens
Containers and even hanging
baskets are very useful in winter
for growing salad greens and
herbs or for providing colour on
decks and patios. When starting a

clean the container thoroughly

Rose Care
Complete the planting of new
specimens into the rose garden,
taking care not to damage
the roots and adding plenty

end of the month.
Planting ornamental trees
and shrubs
August is a very safe month for
planting large deciduous trees
(drop their leaves in autumn)
and any ornamental shrubs and
trees. Ensure planting sites are
well prepared by adding compost.
Stake new trees if they are planted
in windy areas.

but his big V8 has been replaced by
a Tesla and a Toyota RAV4 hybrid.
I know my friend is sorry to see
the Holden go, but he says that
with changing times and being
in the professional field he felt
he needed to set an example and
drive something less taxing on the
environment.
Now, I’m not knocking his
choice of new transport and, as it
turns out, the RAV4 hybrid is on a
shortlist of models my wife and I
are considering as we contemplate
the purchase of a new car. But the
point I’m making is that the buying
public is well aware electric vehicles
and hybrids are taking control of
the new car market. Toyota claims
the RAV4 hybrid as one of its best
selling models, often selling second
to Hilux on a month by month
basis.
Bear in mind too, that you don’t
have to buy the RAV4 with Toyota’s
hybrid synergy drive system,
conventional driveline variants are
included.
The RAV4 hybrid line-up has just
been extended. Two new models
have been added – Adventure
and XSE. Just like its non-hybrid
stablemate, the Adventure gets a
body kit and interior treatment that
makes it stand out markedly from
the rest of the range. If you like
bold and brash it is the car for you,
large fenders, aggressive bumper
and grille, and big wheels are there
to tempt. Inside, there is also bright
orange detailing.
The Adventure is in the line-up
as a point of difference, and after a
week in the car I can certainly see
its appeal, it looks a little bit rugged
and it has appeal in that way. It is
also the model that my friend now
owns.
I also genuinely believe the
Adventure model could be used as
a vehicle that would take you offroad
and into the backblocks. You
see, the RAV4 has had a fairly good
reputation for cross-country work
and just because it is a hybrid that
doesn’t change anything. The fourwheel-drive
network, along with a
slight suspension elevation, is such
that it will cope well with a bit of a
pounding on those gnarly tracks.
More importantly, I suspect it
will be the model of choice if you
are a winter sport enthusiast, I can
see many sitting in the Mt Hutt ski
field car park.
There are no surprises under

styling to go along with its off-road capability.

the bonnet, Toyota’s 2.5-litre
hybrid system is well proven and
has become an established part
of the fuel-saving drivelines that
are now so important in a vehicle.
Without delving too deep into the
intricacies of the system it works
simply like this – the four-cylinder
petrol engine drives much like
conventional power; however, it
also charges the batteries that, in
turn, power an electric motor that
works in tandem with the engine
to supply drive through a continuously
variable transmission. The
whole system cycles constantly, the
benefit being less of a load on the
engine and, consequently, lower
fuel usage.
The RAV4 as a series has a fairly
respectable fuel usage figure, the
non-hybrid claimed to return
6.7-litres per 100km. All hybrids
are listed at 5.3l/100km, which, by
my reckoning, is a fairly healthy
figure and quite achievable. The
fuel usage readout was sitting constantly
at a respectable 6.5l/100km
during the 280km I drove in the
evaluation model. At 100km/h on
the open road the instantaneous
figure is around a thrifty 4l/100km.
I didn’t venture off-road during
my time in the evaluation car, the
weather was filthy across the plains
and I don’t like returning media
evaluation cars untidy. However, I
can report that it is a fabulous open
road tourer. It sits tightly and quietly
on the road, and when those
long Canterbury straights run out
and tight corners present themselves
the RAV4 steers directly into
a bend and the complexity of the
suspension quickly sits composed
and controls body movement.
I mentioned big wheels before,
the Adventure model gets Yokohama
tyres at 235/55 x 19in. They
are a new compound to me but
they equip themselves well with
solid feedback towards the steering
wheel and quiet coarse chip seal
movement.
All factors considered, the RAV4
hybrid is a comfortable touring
car, well it’s a comfortable car at
all speeds and circumstances, and
I guess with its $57,990 figure for
the Adventure model it is stretching
towards the luxury car market.
Bear in mind, though, the RAV4
range starts at $38,990, the hybrid
models starting at $46,990. All
RAV4 hybrids are eligible for a
Clean Car Programme rebate of
over $2000, the Adventure amounting
to $2335.69.
If you want all the bells and whistles
along with in-your-face adornments,
then the Adventure is there
for those who like to be seen, or
who like bold colours and designs.
In terms of fitment, it is a model
that wants for nothing, although I
could do without the video screen
that acts as the interior rear view
mirror, I found it confused my
senses a little. Other than that, the
RAV4 is laid out with ease of use
and it has an intuitive layout.
Toyota has made good use of
the RAV4’s generous proportions,
there are a host of storage pockets
and cubby holes that will easily
take care of those loose items that
we generally travel with, including
a tray for your mobile phone that
will charge it as you drive.
While I’ve long considered
the 2.5-litre Toyota driveline as
being the best hybrid system in
the market, so must many others,
delivery of a new RAV4 hybrid is
pushed out to around 12 months.
How that affects the decision my
wife and I are making hasn’t quite
yet come into focus, but I’m sure
if we do head in that direction the
RAV4 would be well worth the
wait.

Many homes, whether a new build or
an existing house, benefit from installing
a skylight, roof window or sun tunnel.
Apart from the dramatic effect created
and increased daytime light in your
home, there are other practical reasons
for adding these fixtures.
Skylights are sometimes referred to
as “roof windows”, but traditionally, a
skylight cannot be opened while a roof
window can.
Roof windows are outward opening
windows designed to be installed in
the same orientation and plane as the
surrounding roof at a minimum pitch
and are incorporated at the design stage.
Roof windows are usually bigger than
skylights, allowing high-level ventilation
and having electric or manual opener
options. Also, technology can now be
integrated, including rain sensors with
an electric opener providing automatic
closing if it rains, dimmers with a remote,
or ventilation kits.
Sun tunnels have a roof-mounted lens
connected to a diffuser in the ceiling
via highly reflective aluminium tunnels.
This tunnel brings the light from outside
into areas such as hallways, walk-in
wardrobes, bathrooms, laundry rooms,
and pantries.
Health and well-being
Exposure to natural light is essential
for our well-being as sunlight helps
our bodies produce Vitamin D. This
vitamin is needed to regulate our moods
and energy, and bedroom skylights can
also aid in regulating sleep patterns. In
addition, having opening roof windows
can provide ventilation and enable hot
air to escape from the room. Nowadays,
these systems can be opened and closed
electronically or even sensor-based to
measure temperature, humidity, and CO2
levels. An opening skylight will prevent
mould and mildew in a bathroom by
releasing steam and condensation while
not giving up privacy.
Privacy
You’ll want to maintain privacy in
certain areas of your home, such as
bathrooms and bedrooms. However,
with houses built on smaller sections
and closer to surrounding properties,
you’ll still need access to plenty of
natural light and preserve privacy. In this

unlikely (unless nearby properties are
significantly higher than your own) that
people would be able to view these areas
