Brian Fies, A Fire Story, 2019;
expanded edition 2021, Ink on
Bristol Board, Courtesy of the Artist
In a new environmental era, we face an
annual “fire season” that starts earlier and
lasts longer, surprising us with its
fierceness, speed, and scale, bombarding
us with images of crisis and loss, and
striking us with “climate fatigue,” an
underlying fear that cycles of drought and
wildfire will never end. How can we
transform our fear, sadness, anger, and
confusion into clarity, perhaps even calm
and comfort? The artists in Fire Transforms
show us ways to explore, reflect, and make
sense of our questions about this new
reality, in highly accomplished artworks
ranging from photography and painting to
installation, sculpture, ceramic, textile, and
digital media.
Fire Transforms is part of a series of exhibitions and
public programs at the Palo Alto Art Center
focused on climate, Climate Connections.
The Know Your Neighbors Grant Program is designed to help neighbors better connect with each other
while strengthening community and improving the quality of life and neighborhoods in Palo Alto. The goals of
the Program are to:
1) Build a sense of community.
2) Develop or renew neighborhood relationships.
3) Encourage interaction between generations and cultures.
4) Increase governance and organizational leadership of neighborhood associations.
5) Develop collaborative partnerships between Palo Alto neighborhoods and the City.
Citizens may apply for up to $500 (neighborhood associations may apply for up to $1000) for activities such
as block parties, event kick-off celebrations, neighborhood crime prevention and safety activities, and
gatherings involving the building of connections between neighbors. Funding is limited. Grants may be
applied for at any time throughout the calendar year (at least one month prior to event date) and will be
awarded on activities that meet eligibility requirements on a "first come, first served" basis.
