FROM THE NOTEBOOK...
THE GAFFER
Good evening and welcome back to Deepdale for our first home
game of the season under the lights.
Last time we were here, on the opening
day of the campaign against Hull City,
your support was fantastic and the
atmosphere inside the stadium was brilliant.
It was great to see all the flags for the
first time and I look forward to seeing that
throughout the season.
We’ve definitely already felt the benefit of
the extra season cards sold. Seeing the Town
End packed to the rafters was brilliant, and
obviously the Kop will be open for the next
two at home as well.
We now just need to put the ball in the back
of the net to give the fans behind each goal
something to cheer about.
I thought that was the only thing missing
from the Hull game really. We were really
unfortunate to not get on the scoresheet, but
it was fantastic to score four at Huddersfield
last week.
It was really pleasing to see the attitude
and application of the boys who came in for
the game, stepping in and doing a fantastic
job, and showing how important it will be
throughout the season to have that strength
in depth.
This evening, we welcome Paul Warne, his
staff and his team to Deepdale. Paul’s a
fantastic bloke who has done an unbelievable
job at Rotherham United, getting them in to
the Championship on multiple occasions now
within a tight budget.
“IT WAS REALLY
PLEASING TO SEE
THE ATTITUDE AND
APPLICATION OF
THE BOYS WHO
CAME IN FOR THE
GAME, STEPPING
IN AND DOING A
FANTASTIC JOB.”
His assistant Richie Barker is someone I’ve
known for many years too, and he actually
turned out to be our manager the year we got
promoted at Bury.
We know we will be in for a tough encounter
this evening against a Rotherham team who
will be hard to beat, but hopefully we can
excite you with our football on the pitch.
Please continue to get behind the boys and
enjoy the game.
Ryan

Jordan
THE MAIN
INTERVIEW
Storey
The one and only » 19
Jordan Storey is enjoying life back at PNE, but he’s not happy to just coast
through life at Deepdale. He’s fully focused on being successful.
The central defender, who joined the club in
2018, spent the second half of last season
on loan with League One side Sheffield
Wednesday, and has since pushed his way back
in to the first team with Preston North End.
He recently reached an impressive milestone
for the Lilywhites, making his 100th appearance
for the club in the recent home draw against
Hull City, a game he also ended by being named
the EPIC Risk Management man of the match.
“It’s a good achievement at any club,”
Jordan told The One And Only. “It was nice
to finally reach that milestone and now it’s
about looking on to the next games.
“It was nice to top the day off with the award,
it was sort of a fitting occasion really.
“Not only because it was my 100th appearance,
but one of my best mates actually got married
that weekend and I couldn’t make it, so a shoutout
to Nathaniel and Megan on their special day!”
Jordan certainly appreciated the magnitude
of his achievement, given that in the modern
game it’s very few players who get the
opportunity to reach that landmark for a club.
The 24-year-old is already looking ahead
to the next milestone, and while that will
be another memorable moment when it
does come, Jordan is desperate for it to
come hand in hand with success.
He said: “Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good thing,
but it’s also about actually achieving something
with the team as well, I think more than ever.
“We’ve been in this league for a while
now and it’d be nice to really have a
good go for the Play-Off places.
“I think the club’s definitely heading in the right
direction; you can tell that with our style of play.
“We were missing that final touch in
the Wigan and Hull games, but once we
score we look like the real deal.”
Yeovil-born Jordan has been part of the
team to have kept two clean sheets in
the opening two games of the season,
occupying that right-hand spot in the
defensive three, which he appears to have
made his own.
It’s not been a straightforward 12 months for
the former Exeter City man, though.

20 « The one and only
In September, he extended his stay at Deepdale
until 2025 and at that point was regularly
featuring for the Lilywhites in the Championship,
however, things changed in December.
Ryan Lowe was appointed manager and
challenged the defender to go out to League
One, with Sheffield Wednesday, to go and get
some valuable minutes, and to prove himself
as one of the best players in the division.
He did just that, playing a crucial role in
the Owls’ push for a Play-Off place, albeit
they fell short at the semi-final stage.
Jordan added: “I definitely didn’t think I had my
place nailed down here, but it was a bit of a shock.
“I think it brought out the best in me though
because I was maybe a little bit annoyed,
but at the same time I was determined to
go and come back knocking on the door.
“I think the manager just wanted me to go out and
establish myself somewhere and play consistently,
and I managed to do that at Sheffield Wednesday.
“It’s benefitted me massively going there
and wanting to get that fight, being
determined to get back in the team here and
do well, so it’s benefitted me hugely.”
Jordan in action for Sheffield Wednesday in League One.
On his return to Euxton, he came back
to a squad which looked quite a bit
different to the one he left behind.
There were many departures in the summer
with players out of contract, including
the likes of Mathew Hudson and Josh Earl
who were close friends of Jordan.
Despite that, there are still plenty who
have been at the club throughout the
defender’s stay, so it’s certainly not like
walking in to a new changing room.
Jordan said: “Obviously there’s a lot of faces
that have left and moved on, but there’s still
that good core of players that have been here
for a while.
“I think all the new lads have settled in
really well already too, it’s a good bunch
of lads in there and as I said it feels like
we’re heading in the right direction.
“The way we’re playing now is different to
the managers I’ve worked with previously,
too. We play a lot more now.
“I think our style as a team has been good.
If you look at the Hull game in particular,
we had something silly like 500 passes.
“We had so much of the ball in possession,
and I think in previous seasons that’s
not been what we’ve been about.

A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
supporting strong action from the
“We’ve almost been about letting the opposition
have the ball, so it’s good what we’re doing
here and what we’re trying to achieve.”
That style of football which Ryan Lowe is
looking to adopt is something which Jordan
feels he’s really settled in to, helped by that
aforementioned loan to League One.
He said: “I’ve been getting on the ball a lot
more in the new system, and that’s one of the
ways being at Sheffield Wednesday helped
me, because they played that way a lot more
than what I’d previously played here.
“I think football’s always going to evolve. As
players we have to adapt to certain situations
and systems that a manager wants to play.”
“I WAS DETERMINED
TO GO AND COME BACK
KNOCKING ON THE
DOOR.”
This afternoon’s game against Rotherham
United is the first of a double header at
Deepdale, with Watford to come on Saturday.
The support in the opening home game of the
season against Hull City was nothing short
of spectacular, with over 14,000 PNE fans in
attendance, and everyone at the club is keen
to take advantage of the home support.
Jordan disclosed: “All the boys have said that
we want to make Deepdale a fortress this
year, and I think it’ll be important to take
positive results both today and on Saturday.
“It’s a big chance for us to take advantage of
that support. We’ll go in there expecting to take
three points, that has to be our attitude.”

Rotherham United will be looking to make their mark back in the
Championship this season, following their automatic promotion from
League One last term. The Millers more than warranted their secondplaced
finish with 90 points, therefore avoiding the tough test of the
Play-Offs. Manager Paul Warne will be aware of the difficulty in avoiding
the drop zone though, as the club have been relegated in their three
most recent Championship seasons, but each time bounced straight back
up. Some shrewd business over the summer has seen the arrivals of
experienced defender Lee Peltier and striker Tom Eaves – both for free.
Making a combined 364 appearances in England’s second tier, there is no
shortage of experience provided from the two new recruits.

The young Swedish goalkeeper first generated
attention back in his homeland, with boyhood
club Hammarby. Upon some fine displays,
Aston Villa swooped for his services, where
he stayed for four years before switching to
Leicester City. Capped internationally for the
U21s, Johansson signed for Rotherham in 2020,
following the expiration of his contract with
the Foxes. Since then, the shot-stopper has
become quite the hero to Millers’ supporters.
Johansson was responsible for a club-record
27 clean sheets throughout the 2021/22
campaign. During this time, he would not only
win automatic promotion to the Championship,
but he lifted the Papa Johns Trophy too.
Age does not stop skipper Richard Wood from
performing at this high level, as the 37-year-old
is ready for his ninth campaign in a Rotherham
United shirt. Starting as a youngster at Sheffield
Wednesday, the centre back secured moves to
both Coventry City and Charlton Athletic - where
he would make 100 appearances for the former
and reach the FA Cup quarter-final with the
latter. Despite signing for the Millers in 2014,
one of his most famous moments came in the
2017/18 League One Play-Off Final. The captain
netted a brace over 120 minutes to defeat
Shrewsbury Town 2-1 at Wembley and secure
promotion back to the Championship once again.

Academy graduate Ben Wiles will be a youngster
to look out for during Rotherham’s Championship
campaign. Despite plenty of transfer interest this
summer, manager Paul Warne insists he would
require a hefty fee to part with the midfielder.
After impressing in the youth set-up, Wiles was
rewarded with a professional contract in 2017
and his Championship debut in August 2018.
Making a grand total of 53 appearances across all
competitions last season, including a career-best
of ten goals, the 23-year-old’s efforts resulted in
lifting the Papa Johns Trophy and promotion to the
second tier of English football. Operating in the
heart of the midfield, Wiles is not afraid to burst
up and get involved at the top end of the pitch.
The pacey winger, who can also operate as a
centre forward, was recruited by the Millers in
August 2019. Born in Nigeria, Ogbene moved to
Ireland when he was eight, going on to become
the first African-born Irish international player
in June 2021. After originally shining for Cork City
and Limerick FC, Brentford came in with an offer
he and the club couldn’t refuse, and swiftly joined
them in early 2018. Ogbene struggled to reach the
Bees’ first team, though, and spent time out on
loan with Exeter City, before making Rotherham
his permanent home on a three-year deal.
Known as a very agile dribbler, he kick-started
the new campaign with a goal against Swansea
City, helping his side take a point at home.

DEEPDALE
17TH MARCH 1962
North End had never met Rotherham
United before the 1961/62 season and
then suddenly we met four times in
one campaign! Having met them twice
in the fourth round of the league
cup, losing 3-0 on a replay, just after
meeting in the league for the first time
– a game that ended 2-2 at Millmoor,
we grabbed the two points with a win
at Deepdale in March.
It was a 2-0 home win, with a brace
of goals from Alfie Biggs – who ended
the season as top scorer, with 22 in all
competitions.
The win was a good response in
North End’s first (of what has been
61 years) out of the top flight, having
lost a tight FA Cup quarter-final
replay to Manchester United at Old
Trafford just three days earlier. At
the end of the season Rotherham
would finish one place and one point
above the Lilywhites in ninth and tenth
respectively in a second tier won by
Liverpool – their last season outside
27TH MARCH 1993
In a relegation season, ending on
an emotional afternoon at Bolton
Wanderers’ Burnden Park, there
weren’t too many highlights… of course
all those of a certain age remember
Tony Ellis’ hat-trick at Bloomfield Road
in October of that season, but it wasn’t
his only treble of the campaign.
That one came after getting up from
being knocked unconscious by Gary
Briggs… these days he would have
been swapped by a concussion
substitute, but the one at Deepdale
against the Millers was a little less
dramatic.
John Beck was manager by the time
Rotherham came to Deepdale at the
end of March, but results were up and
down.
Having lost at the Hawthorns in
midweek, the team bounced back as
a brace from Mickey Norbury and
Ellis’ three putting the South Yorkshire
visitors to the sword in front of just
under 5,000 on the plastic at Deepdale.
Our last win over the Millers came as
the Lilywhites set an early light to the
fireworks on 5th November 2016, as
Aiden McGeady proved the spark at the
New York Stadium.
The home side’s winless run was
extended to 12 games as first half
goals from Jordan Hugill and Callum
Robinson helped PNE to a comfortable
win.
Robinson spurned a great chance
before Hugill headed in off the post
from Greg Cunningham’s cross to open
the scoring.
It was 2-0 when Aiden McGeady teed
up Robinson for a tap-in from close
range.
Substitute Peter Odemwingie crossed
for Richard Wood to halve the deficit
with a header, but Marnick Vermijl
Northern Ireland through his grandmother.
Starting his career with St. Ives Town in 2009, he
transferred to Newport County just three years
later for £5k. With the Welsh side, Washington
helped the club earn promotion to the EFL for
the first time in 25 years, via the Play-Offs.
This caught the eye of Peterborough United in
League One, who promptly signed the forward
in January 2014 for over £500k. He would make
just under 100 appearances at the Weston
Homes Stadium, registering 32 goals and 11
assists, to mark a successful time at the club.
Queens Park Rangers were next to acquire his
services in January 2016, paying a multi-millionpound
fee, but he was unable to hit the same
numbers. Spells at Sheffield United, Heart of
over four years – up until Rotherham boss Paul
Warne made the 30-year-old his first signing
After a senior career of over 250 appearances
hung up his boots in 2012. This wasn’t the end of
his time at the Millers though, as he soon joined
the coaching staff in May of that same year.
Just six months later, Warne would be granted a
testimonial by the club for all his years of service
including as a player, coach and caretaker
manager. 2016 came around and boss Kenny
Jackett had just resigned, which meant it was
Warne’s time to step up as caretaker manager
of Rotherham United. The club were sat bottom
of the Championship table, 12 points adrift of
safety at the time, but Warne was appointed
permanent manager in April 2017 once relegation
was confirmed. Despite the difficult times, he
has won the Millers promotion back to the
Championship on three separate occasions, while
also claiming the Papa Johns Trophy last season
too. He’s very much a fan favourite at the New
York Stadium, and respected even more so for
his honesty in media interviews. Rotherham fans
have also been able to gain a fascinating insight
into how he operates behind the scenes as a
THEY WORE THE SHIRT...
The one and only » 39
with Ian Rigby
For this season’s historical page, I thought it might be an ideal opportunity to
highlight the players who represented Preston North End exactly one hundred
years ago during the 1922/23 season. The country was still recovering from
the effects of World War One, but was slowly getting back on track.
Tommy Roberts, an England
schoolboy international,
was born very close to West
Bromwich Albion’s ground, the club
that rejected him after a trial as a
16-year-old.
However, he signed for Leicester
Fosse having played locally around the
Midlands area. The First World War
robbed the youngster of his chance
of league football, but he guested
numerous times for Southport Vulcan
during the war period. His goalscoring
exploits attracted much attention, but
it was Preston North End that were
successful in obtaining his signature,
although they had to pay Leicester
Fosse £400 for the privilege as they
still held his league registration. During
his first season with North End, Tommy
amassed 29 goals, including a brace
when knocking Blackpool out of the FA
Cup in January 1920. He was quickly
into his stride as a striker, scoring a
few hat-tricks along the way, the most
satisfying being his first league treble,
away at West Brom, the club that had
rejected him as a youngster. During
May 1921, Preston North End played in
six benefit and charity games, all away
from Deepdale, and his personal tally
in those games was 15 goals with hattricks
against Blackpool and Blackburn
Rovers on consecutive evenings.
Having lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the
1921 FA Cup semi-final, the club went
one better the following season, only
going on to lose the Final itself 1-0 to
Huddersfield Town with a controversial
penalty proving the difference. The
1922/23 season was a good season for
him as he set up a new club record
by scoring 28 league goals. Due to his
fine form he was selected to play for
the Football League, a game in which
he scored another two goals. Needless
to say he was chosen to make his
full international debut the following
season. He was selected twice, against
Wales and Belgium, and he scored
in both games. Unbelievably, in 1924,
he was transferred to Burnley for
more than £4,000 and he, amazingly,
was only earning £8 per week! Two
seasons later he was brought back
to Deepdale for a bargain £1,500 fee
and he brought his shooting boots
with him. He grabbed eight goals in
his first five games and was leading
goalscorer once again, with 30 league
and cup goals. It was the sixth season
he had been North End’s leading
marksman. In 1928, a £1,000 fee took
him to Tottenham Hotspur for a very
short spell before semi-retiring from
football, settling in Preston as mine
host of the Stephenson’s Arms in the
Deepdale area of town and playing
locally for Dick, Kerr’s and Chorley.
FOR
RECORD
with Mike Payne
Over the years, many club records have been set by Preston North
End players, and in this new series of articles we look at some of those
records that have been set, and broken, here at Deepdale. Some are well
known, but others are more obscure, and hopefully fascinating.
When playing in goal, most
goalkeepers love to keep a
clean sheet, mainly because
it usually means they have had a good
game.
In North End’s case there are 34
goalkeepers who have all kept ten
or more clean sheets in their North
End careers, that is the cut-off point
for the benefit of this article. It was
sad that Daniel Iversen left us during
the summer as he was steadily
climbing the list with 23 clean sheets,
a testament to his ability having made
just 71 appearances for us. There are
two others on 23 clean sheets on this
list of players, with James Branston
and John Brown all in joint-21st place.
Those three goalkeepers came from
three very different eras, with Jimmy
Branston making 136 appearances for
the club in the 1920s, whilst Brown
was often an understudy to Alan Kelly
Senior in the 1960s and ‘70s. He had 72
games in a North End shirt.
As you move up the list, some popular
goalkeepers have very respectable
clean sheet totals, like Chris Maxwell,
Thorsten Stuckmann, Peter Litchfield
and John Vaughan. They all managed
to reach the late 20s in total, but
then in the 30s there are some other
famous names. There was a spell when
Alan Kelly Junior and David Brown
shared the goalkeeping duties and
it was strange that Kelly had 38 and
Brown had 37 clean sheets at the end
of their Deepdale days. Who was the
Alan Kelly Senior

The one and only » 41
better ‘keeper of the two? Well, Brown
earned his total in 97 games for us,
whilst Kelly played 164, so you can
make your own decision on that one.
Carlo Nash was another who had a
good record and fails to make the top
ten on this list by just one clean sheet,
as he finished on 40. David Lucas had 41
to his name, but he ended way behind
two players on 56 clean sheets. One of
them, Declan Rudd, was cruelly denied
to improve on his total when retiring
through injury last season. Level with
him was Andy Lonergan, one of our
most popular goalkeepers of recent
years. A 1950s favourite comes next
as the only goalkeeper to end in the
‘60s (62) for clean sheets. His name
was Fred Else and many good judges
reckoned he was so unlucky not to win
at least one England cap, such was his
consistency and talent.
We now reach the top six in this
unique look at our goalkeepers, and
this one is the last of what I call the
Peter McBride
Roy Tunks
modern player. This one is the only
player to end his clean sheet career
for us in the 70s – 75 shut-outs to be
exact – and he was the very popular
Tepi Moilanen. The Finnish goalie made
159 appearances in our first team,
including four from the bench, and he
also won four full caps for his country.
More importantly he played a major
role in our division two championship
win in the 1999/2000 season.
Moving on to the fifth and fourth
players in the list, we find two old
timers in James Trainer (86 clean
sheets) and Harry Holdcroft on 90.
They were both fine ‘keepers, and if
you read all the match reports of their
eras, Trainer (276 games between 1888
and 1898) and Holdcroft (289 games
between 1932 and 1939), the both of
them were top, top goalkeepers who
gave many outstanding performances.
And now I can reveal the top three
goalkeepers in this fascinating list.
In third place we have a former
player with today’s opponents in Roy
Tunks, who had 104 games where he
didn’t let a goal in, and that from 355
appearances in two spells between 1974
and 1989. In second place comes the
ever popular and wonderful Alan Kelly
Senior. He gave so much unstinting
and loyal service to North End and fully
deserved the naming of the Town End
stand after him. As a player though, he
was outstanding, and his total of clean
sheets was 145, from 513 appearances.
If he hadn’t received a career-ending
injury in 1973 he would surely have
held the record in this particular list of
players. However, that accolade goes
to the one and only Peter McBride,
who played for us from 1898 to 1912,
amassing 474 appearances with a
clean sheet total of 150. That is now the
target of our new ‘keepers this season
in Freddie Woodman and David Cornell!
Clean sheets are part of a goalkeeper’s
DNA. Finally, and just for the record,
North End have used 112 goalkeepers in
all, before this season.

PNE U19s 9
OLDHAM ATHLETIC U19s 1
Preston North End U19 started
the season in style as they fired
nine past Oldham Athletic to get
their defence of the Youth Alliance
title off to a flier at Springfields on
6th August.
Finlay Cross-Adair, Kitt Nelson and Kian
Best grabbed a brace apiece, while
Noah Mawene, Dana Amaral and U16
Felipe Rodriguez-Gentile also found the
back of the net in what was a fantastic
victory.
The visitors actually took the lead just
three minutes in, as a corner was
whipped into the far post towards
James Pradic, but he was unable to
keep hold of the ball and Oldham were
ahead.
But it was the Lilywhites who
dominated and they equalised in the
23rd minute. Nelson picked the ball
up outside the box, danced around
the Oldham defenders and finished
brilliantly in the bottom right-hand
corner to level the score.
Just two minutes later they had the
lead. The ball dropped to Amaral on the
edge of the box, and he calmly slotted
the ball past the ‘keeper.
Just like that North End had a third
goal seven minutes later. This time
Cross-Adair was played in on goal and
fired a ferocious shot into the left-hand
side of the net.
Oldham had no answer for the boys in
white, Best ventured forward from the
back and fired a thunderbolt past the
‘keeper and into the bottom right-hand
corner to make it four.
As the game approached half-time,
North End weren’t finished, Nelson got
his second and PNE’s fifth as he rose
highest to guide his header into the top
right-hand corner.
The Lilywhites didn’t slow down in the
second half, as Mawene made it six just
ten minutes in and it was great work
from Cross-Adair to find Mawene free
in the box for him to slot home.
Just three minutes after coming on,
substitute Rodriguez-Gentile made
it seven. The ball dropped out to the
young forward on the edge of the area
and he volleyed a great effort past the
‘keeper.
The relentless Lilywhites still wanted
more, and they got more with Cross-
Adair adding an eighth. It was smart
thinking from Cross-Adair to take a
quick free-kick, he found Rodriguez-
Gentile who played a lovely pass back
to Cross-Adair and he fired the ball
past the ‘keeper for his second of the
game.
As the game was drawing to a close,
North End found time to add one more.
Once again Best ventured forward
from the back and unleashed a wicked
effort to once again find the bottom
right-hand corner to complete the
scoring.
Manager Nick Harrison was extremely
pleased with his team’s performance,
he said: “It was an incredible
performance and obviously a great
result. It’s good for us to get off to a
good start in the league, it really was a
great performance.
“The way the team passed the ball,
created chances and played together
as a team was outstanding and really
good to see.”

ACADEMY INTERVIEW
CROSS-ADAIR:
“NO BETTER
START”
Finlay Cross-Adair felt there was no better way to start the new season as PNE U19
thrashed Oldham Athletic 9-1.
It was the perfect way to start
the season for North End as they
began their title defence and
Cross-Adair was pleased to start the
campaign on a high.
“I don’t think you can start the season
better than that,” said the 17-year-old.
“It was a brilliant performance, I
thought we did really well as a team all
game, especially to bounce back from
conceding that early goal. A great start
to the season!”
As well as two goals, the forward also
grabbed an assist, and he is looking to
continue his goalscoring form which
he started at the end of last season.
“I think I had a good performance.
Scoring two goals is always good and
to get an assist as well is great.
“I still think I could have been better
which might be a little harsh on myself,
but there is always room to improve.”
It was such an impressive season last
time out for PNE U19, winning multiple
trophies including the division, and the
lifelong PNE fan wants to build on last
season and just continue winning.
He said: “After such a strong season
last time out it’s just about trying to
build on from that.
“We want to win as many
things as we can win, but
most importantly we want
to improve as a group.
“As for myself I just want
to keep getting better,
keep improving that is
always the aim.”
“IT WAS A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE,
I THOUGHT WE DID REALLY WELL AS A
TEAM ALL GAME, ESPECIALLY TO BOUNCE
BACK FROM CONCEDING THAT EARLY
GOAL. A GREAT START TO THE SEASON!”

BALL INTENT ON
GOALSCORING
RETURN
New signing Samantha Ball has had an immediate impact on the Preston North End Women’s
squad in pre-season following her return to the game
Ball – formerly of last season’s
champions in PNE’s division,
Blackburn Community Sports
Club – has just come back into playing
football after having taken some time
out from the game after having her
baby girl, giving birth to her daughter
Lilly last September.
She has been involved throughout
pre-season, featuring – at the time
of writing – in friendlies against
Haslingden Ladies and Girls, Atherton
Labernum Rovers Ladies and most
recently Fleetwood Town Wrens Ladies.
All three games ended in draws and
Sam was among the scorers against
Atherton, who North End have also
coincidentally been drawn to face in the

Women’s FA Cup first qualifying round
next month.
Sam is aiming to use the pre-season
period first and foremost to get
back to full fitness, but also to build
up momentum ahead of the league
campaign starting on Sunday 21st August
– away to Accrington Stanley – and she
has high expectations for the season.
She said: “My aims for this season are
to get back on the scoresheet as much
as I can to contribute to us hopefully
winning the league this season.
“It was nice to get on the score sheet
against Atherton. It definitely gives me
more confidence going forward as I
would like to get a few more goals to my
name in the coming season.
“There is so much talent at the club. We
just need to show that on the pitch week
in, week out, and get the points on the
board.”
This season, Ball has advanced forward
from her usual defensive midfield role
to taking on the mantle at No.10, and
with it, additional responsibilities from
set pieces.
She is pleased to be enjoying her football
again, particularly having returned to
teams as a teenager before moving on
to Bolton Wanderers.
Sam continued: “I started going on to
PNECET IN
ZANZIBAR:
APRIL 2023!
Preston North End Community and Education Trust is coordinating
a trip for a team of more than 20 volunteers to
visit Zanzibar in April 2023 to leave a positive lasting legacy
of Preston North End on the African island.

The one and only » 57
The One And Only is catching up
with all the volunteers heading to
Zanzibar with PNECET throughout
the season – the latest being PNECET’s
Graphic Designer Sue Devaney.
Sue will be one of our construction
and renovation volunteers in Zanzibar,
working to renovate and construct both
new and existing classrooms and school
facilities.
Why did you sign up to volunteer in
Zanzibar?
I knew this trip had my name on it, I
wanted to be involved and chances like
this don’t come around very often. It felt
like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
What do you hope to gain from
volunteering as part of a team in
Zanzibar?
It’s more that I really want to give
something back and make a difference.
I’ve signed myself up for renovations,
maybe I will learn some new skills. I’m
sure it’s going to be hard work, but
incredibly rewarding.
What are you looking forward to
most on the trip?
I am looking forward to every aspect
of the trip. It’s a country that I’ve never
been to, never thought I’d ever visit, and
know very little about. I’m also looking
forward to meeting and spending time
with the children whose lives we will be
improving.
Why do you believe it is important
that PNECET facilitate trips like this
for volunteers to take part in?
Individually it is hard to find available
opportunities like this, so having PNECET
backing a group project like this really
helps. I wouldn’t have heard about this
without PNECET.
What impact do you think we
will have on the individuals and
community whilst on our trip?
I’m hoping that we can make an
impression on the building projects
already taking place so that more
children can benefit from the improved
facilities in the future.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I love a bit of DIY and can’t get enough of
home renovation shows!
Have you done anything similar to
this trip previously or any other
charitable work?
I have never done anything like this
before, only a sponsored swim for
Macmillan Cancer Support and two
twilight walks for East Lancashire
Hospice which are eight-mile walks
around Blackburn.
What would you say to fellow North
End fans who might be interested in
going on future trips?
I’d say just go for it and try something
new!

62 YOUNG PEOPLE
COMPLETE NCS
PROGRAMME
Sixty-two young people completed Preston North End Community and Education Trust’s
[PNECET] National Citizen Service [NCS] programme earlier this month!
The NCS programme is designed
to get 15 to 17-year-olds outside
of their comfort zone and
develop their life skills with a twoweek
programme which comprises
a five-day residential, adventurous
outdoor activities and planning and
implementing a social action project.
Young people on our most recent
summer programme spent time in
Chester on their residential and took on
activities including rock climbing and
abseiling in Llangollen, Wales.
Back at Deepdale in week two,
participants were split into four groups
as their social action projects raised
more than £700 combined for four
different charities – Young Minds, Age
UK Lancashire, Hearbeat north west and
the Salvation Army.
They are now being invited back to
Deepdale next month to celebrate their
graduation.
One participant, Nama, said: “We were
treated with maturity and respect so
we had opportunities to gain our own
independence. In the second week
when we did our social action project,
we came up with ideas on our own and
tried to plan everything on our own.
I’ve gained independence, planning and
teamwork skills from that.
“We had our residential so we went
on hikes and spent a whole day
rockclimbing and abseiling which took a
lot of confidence. We had a lot of fun.
“In the second week we raised £440 for
the Salvation Army in Preston. We also
brought food, clothes and baby products
and were able to donate that as well. It
was nice to help the community with our
social action project.”
Fellow participant, Angel, added: “We did
activities like hiking and abseiling, which
was really fun and interesting because
many of us have not done something
like that and it really improved our
confidence and bravery.
“I’ve really enjoyed meeting new
people and finding people with common
interests. I really enjoyed doing the
fundraiser for a great cause and you
could tell at the end it was going to
really help people.”
PNE WELCOMES THE EPIC
RISK MANAGEMENT MAN
OF THE MATCH
Preston North End were delighted to announce EPIC Risk
Management as the club’s new man of the match sponsor
ahead of the opening home game of the season.
In a new twist on a popular concept, for every competitive
first team home fixture in the 2022/23 season, Preston
North End’s star man – as chosen by the match sponsor or
our new award sponsors – will be winning the accolade on
behalf of a cause close to their heart, as our new partners
pledge to donate £500 to the player’s nominated charity.
EPIC Risk Management – who are a Lancashire firm,
based in Appley Bridge, but working in 27 countries – are
globally-leading specialists in gambling harm minimisation,
preventing gambling from harming people and organisations
through education, training, advice and consultancy.
The company enjoys plenty of connections with PNE, having
been executive box holders and player sponsors in recent
seasons thanks to CEO Paul Buck’s lifelong support for
the club, while their marketing communications manager,
Adrian Ward, job shares the stadium announcer’s role on
matchdays at Deepdale.
Reacting to the new arrangement, Ward explained: “It’s
a pleasure for EPIC Risk Management to increase our
involvement with Preston North End and become the new
Man of the Match sponsor, furthering a long-standing
connection with the club and supporting some very worthy
causes in the process.
“It’s in keeping with our company ethos to be benevolent
wherever we can. We’re currently part of the B1G1
movement, which sees us donate to global causes on a
sliding scale every time we enjoy a business success, and
we’ve also been sponsors of other professional, grassroots
and charitable sports and events.
“Preston North End are one of the many sports clubs that
we already work with. Every year for the past four seasons,
we’ve delivered our education programme to various groups
within the club, by staff who have lived through serious
gambling disorders, and will be back working with the club’s
first team squad again this season.
“We do that for every club within the EFL, as well as elite
cricket and rugby union in England and the huge NCAA
college network in the USA, plus many other high-risk
sectors in 27 countries.
“On a personal note, this is the ideal arrangement for me,
given that I work full-time for EPIC whilst also sharing the
stadium announcer’s role at Deepdale on matchdays, so I
look forward to announcing all the man of the match winners
and their chosen charities this season.”
At the opening game of the season, the award went to Jordan
Storey, who selected local children’s charity Rainbow Hub as
his beneficiary, he can be seen above receiving his cheque
from EPIC’s research manager Anca-Maria Gherghel.
