Personal service, customer loyalty are keys to shops' success.
“I
t’s a good time to have a store in Madison,”
says Chris Brinkofski, owner of
Tons of Toys (64 Main Street, 973-507-
For Brinkofski, who opened his Madison
toy shop 12 years ago, it’s no mystery why
downtown Madison is thriving. “It’s a very
clean and safe shopping downtown,” he says.
“You can come here and shop for your entire
family. There’s something for everyone.”
Jerry Harmon, who owns the shop
Madison PhotoPlus (40 Main Street, 973-966-2900;
Bret, agrees that variety is the spice of business life
in Madison.
“There are a greater number of reasons for a
consumer to come where there is a variety of establishments,”
says Harmon. “That makes it worthwhile,
Customer loyalty and personal service also
help downtown businesses compete with
Internet and mall shopping. “Service trumps
all,” says Harmon, who has been in business
in Madison since 1975. “Customers still like
you to know their name, know their dog’s
name, remember their children’s names. It’s
about building relationships.”
Christine Kosakowski, who owns the Pink
Pear (42 Main Street, 973-437-2132; shopthepinkpear.com)
with her husband Paul, agrees that
Madison breeds loyal customers. “People here are definitely
very conscious of shopping small and shopping
local,” she says.
Kosakowski, who opened her gifts-and-accessories
shop three years ago, lauds Madison’s foot traffic—
especially since many downtown eateries now have
The Sunroom (21 Kings Road, 973-434-0453;
since 2015, senses something
even more ethereal about Madison.
“It’s got a pleasant vibe,” says
Chalfin. “It’s not like a high-pressure vibe.”
While Madison provides the core clientele
for all of these shops, the stores also
attract customers from neighboring towns, such
as the Chathams, Summit, Morristown and
Florham Park. “We’re getting more and more
people from beyond Madison,” says Harmon.
▲ MADISON'S WALKABILITY
MAKES IT AN IDEAL PLACE FOR
“There aren’t a lot of stores like ours.”
The presence of three college campuses in
Madison is another boon for downtown business.
“The students love to come in. They’re
readers,” says Chalfin, whose store specializes
in hard-to-find and out-of-print books.
But it’s not just the students. “It’s great
when the parents come to visit,” says
Kosakowski. “They usually shop Main Street.”
All of the entrepreneurs applaud the local
Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown
and for events like Bottle Hill Day. “It’s a very
supportive town,” says Kosakowski.
SHAKESPEARE THEATRE
OF NEW JERSEY
By JACQUELINE MROZ
matters of
arts
the
with its sparkling new arts center, three semi-professional
theater companies, a museum, and one of the top Shakespeare
theaters in the country, Madison’s arts scene is
vibrant and flourishing.
Veteran arts impresario John Pietrowski, director of arts and events
for the Madison Community Arts Center, says the borough can take
much of the credit. “You can’t underestimate the commitment the
borough has made to the arts in this community over the years,” he
says. “It’s not lip service—they really support it.”
Pietrowski should know—he’s been promoting the arts in
Madison, in one way or another, for more than three decades.
For instance, when he ran the Playwrights Theater, the Madison
Board of Education supported the program by having
playwriting taught in all of its schools. At the end of the
school year, the organization would hold an annual Madison
Young Playwrights Festival, staging plays written by students.
The Madison Community Arts Center was built three years
ago with the objective of celebrating and nurturing the creativity
of people in town—including its students at Drew University,
Fairleigh Dickinson University and Saint Elizabeth University—as
well as bringing in professionals who do not live here, Pietrowski
says. “There’s always been cultural life associated with universities,
and the people who teach there,” he says. “Madison’s proximity to
New York City also allows for a talent pool of artists to easily be
brought to the town.”
The center hosts popular theatrical events and concerts, as well
as various open-mic nights for poetry, prose, music and comedy.
Pietrowski also lauds Lisa Ellis, Madison’s director of business
development, for her part in encouraging the arts and using them
as a way to improve the quality of life and the economy in Madison.
MUSEUM OF EARLY
TRADES & CRAFTS
MADISON IS KNOWN for being home to the Shakespeare Theatre of
New Jersey, located on the grounds of Drew University; the theater is
celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The Dorothy Young Center
for the Arts, also on the campus, has a world-class concert hall with
nearly perfect acoustics, says Pietrowski.
Art lovers can peruse the borough’s Museum of Early Trades &
Crafts, located in a former library space on Main Street that looks
like a castle, as well as its education annex that hosts classes and
activities for children.
Each fall, Madison celebrates Bottle Hill Day,
its annual street festival, with five stages of music
throughout the day. It’s one of the biggest music
festivals in the area—and a great chance for
Madison residents to meet and spend time with
each other and celebrate where they live.
Meanwhile, the Madison Holiday Arts Festival,
held annually after Thanksgiving, is another
highlight for culture lovers, with its music, spoken
word and dance performances.
Much of the arts programming in the borough
can also be credited to the Madison Arts & Cultural
Alliance, a coalition of arts organizations,
artists and neighbors dedicated to encouraging
collaborations among the wide-ranging cultural
offerings in town.
“They’ve made a commitment to improving
arts and culture in Madison, and they really get
things done,” says Pietrowski.
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is
celebrating its 60th anniversary this year—
and its season is unlike any other fans have seen.
The Arts
BONNIE J. MONTE
Artistic Director
performing
for
60
years
The current season marks the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic that the
Madison staple is performing a full lineup of five mainstage performances, which in the
coming months includes The Metromaniacs (through September 4), The Caretaker
(September 21-October 9), Two by Childress: Two One-Acts by Alice Childress
(October 26-November 13), and Twelfth Night (December 7-January 1).
“For people who love Shakespeare, there’s Shakespeare. For people who don’t like
Shakespeare, there’s a lot of non-Shakespeare,” says longtime artistic director Bonnie J.
Monte. “Our main goal is to get our audiences back again, and to bring them the kind of
thrilling experience that only live theater can provide. It’s just not the same as looking at
a computer screen.” Monte spoke about the theater’s history and future showing classic
and classic-inspired plays to local theatergoers.
What does it mean
for the Shakespeare
Theatre to be celebrating
60 years?
Sixtieth anniversaries
are not
particularly remarkable
in certain spheres.
But certainly in the world
of theater, making it to 60
is quite an accomplishment.
Keeping theaters alive these
days is a very difficult thing, made even
worse by the pandemic.
What’s also remarkable is that this is a
theater that has only ever had two artistic
directors. ... It was founded by two gentlemen,
Paul Barry and Phil Dorian, back in
1963. Paul Barry was the artistic director up
until October of 1990. And then I took over,
so I’ve been here for 32 years. So that’s
really unusual. And what that’s been able
to do is give the company a really strong
degree of continuity.
Because we’ve been around so long and
because we re-infused our mission back in
1990 to include an equal focus on education,
we’ve really been able to affect the
education landscape in New Jersey pretty
remarkably over the years.
What makes makes the theater
unique?
I think that we’re the only theater
totally dedicated to classic
work. Obviously, there’s a huge
focus on Shakespeare, we are the go-to
Shakespeare theater in the state. And we’ve
expanded the mission over the years to
include new work that is either inspired by
the classics, or is in some way derivative of
the classics. While a lot of people think
that we just do Shakespeare, nothing
could be further from the truth. We
do classical authors from all over the
world from all time periods, but we
also do a fair degree of new work. That
includes what we consider contemporary
classics. For example, this...season,
we’re doing two plays by Alice Childress.
She was a black female writer from
the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, and her
work has stood the test
of time.
How did the theater shift
gears during the pandemic?
During the pandemic, we
did manage to do quite a bit of
work outside. We started a whole online
program where we were able to do online
content called Pandemic Playhouse.
How else did Covid affect the theater?
Thank goodness for both the
federal government and the state
government stepping up and helping
the arts institutions through
a huge variety of relief grants.
That’s what got most of us
through this and allowed us
to come out of this thing still
alive. That’s another way
that makes the 60th anniversary
so remarkable.
There were a number
of companies that just
couldn’t make it through the pandemic.
So, in the scheme of huge dilemmas, we all
feel quite proud that we survived one of the
toughest ones you could imagine. We kept
thinking about Shakespeare and how the
plague shut down the theaters in England
on and off for a number of years. And we
kept thinking, ‘Well, if they’ve managed it,
so can we.’
How has the Shakespeare Theatre
evolved in 60 years?
A huge amount. It started as a very small
operation...in Cape May. The first 10
years, there was a fairly gypsy-like existence,
insomuch that they had to keep
changing performance spaces. But
then in 1972, Drew University
invited the theater to take
up residence on campus,
and so Drew has been our
landlord for the past 50
years, and the ability that
we had back in the 1990s to renovate and
expand the theater made the performance
space finally competitive with other performance
spaces of other theaters in America.
It’s a beautiful gem of a space. And then, in
partnership with Saint Elizabeth University,
we were able to acquire a second performance
space.
And we are a teaching theater. The professional
training that occurs here is pretty
profound. We have supplied the American
theater scene with hundreds and hundreds
of emerging professionals over the years
who have taken up their place in the American
theater and made a big difference.
What do you see in the future?
That’s hard to tell, because who knows
what the world is going to do? But I think
right now, our focus is on slowly, but surely,
making our way back to some semblance
of what I would call a totally normal
existence. —Thomas Neira
amusement areas: at the Central
Avenue School and on Kings Road.
More activities can be found at
Dodger Drive on Green Village Road.
SO WHY IS BOTTLE HILL DAY CALLED
BOTTLE HILL DAY?
The name dates back to the 1715
establishment of the humble village of
Bottle Hill, in what is now the bustling
borough of Madison—which received
its current name in 1834 after residents
thought the name Bottle Hill was
too rustic. They chose Madison after
James Madison, the fourth president
of the United States and the namesake
of the local private school, Madison
Academy.
These days, Bottle Hill Day represents
a family-friendly community
celebration presented by the Madison
Downtown Development Commission.
However, it is easy—and a fun history
lesson—to remember Madison’s roots
by visiting the Bottle Hill Historic
District of Madison any time.

THE BEST PART OF BOTTLE HILL DAY?
All activities are free and open to the
public. The event is a great chance
for Madison newbies and longtime
residents to get out and mingle with
their neighbors, and for New Jerseyans
living in nearby towns to see what that
Madison spirit is all about.
A FOCUS ON
WELLNESS
Madison residents embrace
healthy living with local workouts.
▲
Residents of Madison
are focused on
wellness.
Need proof?
There are dozens of
fitness studios, gyms
and other wellness-focused
businesses dotting Madison’s
downtown and the surrounding
areas.
The studios host a variety
of workout classes—from yoga
to interval training to barre to
Pilates—and personal training,
while other businesses
offer more traditional gym
environments with cardio and
strength-training machines.
Each place is unique and understands
the needs and desires
of its particular clientele.
Take Fitness For Mankind,
which offers small strengthfocused
classes and high-intensity
cardio classes—as well
as low-cost childcare ($4-$5/
child) for clients during classes,
since many of the attendees are
moms. That detail shows that
Fitness for Mankind truly cares
about its community of exercisers,
and that management
understands how challenging it
can be for parents to find time
for themselves.
Health & Wellness
Elsewhere in town, there are facilities
including Rose City Strength, a personal
training studio and gym that prioritizes
top-tier, individualized training for clients
who value strength training; Santosha Yoga
Studio, which teaches the Iyengar method
and caters to yogis (or wannabe yogis) of
all levels of experience, fitness and flexibility;
and Club Pilates, which offers a variety
of classes, both on and off equipment, for
teens and adults.
The Madison Area YMCA is about community
as much as it is about wellness,
with a variety of programs for youth,
adults and seniors. Fitness-wise, the
YMCA offers swim classes, group exercise
classes, personal training, physical
therapy, sports and more. “Now, more
than ever, our community understands the
importance of health and wellness,” says
Joe Gonsalves, vice president of Member
and Support Services for the YMCA.
Or, if you are looking for a simple, costfree
way to improve your health, what better
option is there than strolling through
the beautiful streets of Madison?
Meet Ashley!
JOJO STARBUCK
Former Olympic figure skater JoJo Starbuck has lived in Madison
since 1997, when she settled here with her husband Jeff and twins, Abraham
and Noah. At just 16 years old, Starbuck, now 71, and skating partner
Ken Shelley were going for the gold at the Olympics. Since then,
her career has also included stints on Broadway and with the Ice
Capades, plus her current gig: teaching skating locally to adults.
Q. What about skating drew you in as a kid
growing up in California? There’s a real art to it.
You hit it right on the nose when you said art because
it is an Olympic sport but also, it’s like ballet. ... It
employs both the athleticism and the artistry. When
I was little, before I found skating...I was always running
around the neighborhood and climbing every
tree and up on fences and walking on them like a
tightrope. I had boundless energy, but I also loved
“I wasn’t comfortable in my own skin and was fed up with how bad I let myself
go. I won’t lie I was skeptical at first and really thought this program wasn’t
going to work, but I still decided to try it out. Well, that was the best decision
I made! I worked this program and each week saw a little more “fluff” falling
off of me. THE MAX environment alone was so comforting and I didn’t
feel judged. They push you to do your best and everyone is like a family”
theater and shows. ... I started putting on plays in
my garage. When I found skating, it was perfect
because you could go fast and jump and spin
and feel the wind in your hair, but you could
also wear a costume and have music and an
audience and perform.
Q. What made you fall in love with Madison?
It has everything. It's got trees and flowers
and the church bells ring and the train is a
12-minute walk from the house, there’s woods
across the street, the school systems are good,
the medical care
nearby is all wonderful,
you’re a
short train ride
from culture
and arts in New
York City. ... I love
that I'm within 20
minutes of three
different ice
rinks.
▲ JOJO STARBUCK
Q. For the last 20 years, you’ve been teaching
skating to adults and seniors. Tell me
about it.
It started out at Rockerfeller Center, and I was
teaching people like James Colley, the producer
of the David Letterman show, who used to be
at NBC at the time, and a lot of people who
worked for the Olympics at NBC, and they were
just looking for a fun workout.
It’s a great for your balance, for your muscles,
your posture. Your mental focus really
has to work because you're having to think of
several things at one time to make every move
work correctly...and it's invigorating, you know?
I mostly have women who range in age from 50
through their 70s, and the fact that I can make
them feel strong and confident and beautiful is
a joy to me because, as I get older, I want to feel
strong and confident and beautiful, and I want
to feel more sure of myself. —Falyn Stempler
A ROSY
DINING
SCENE
Dig into the varied
offerings in Madison.
Photos: Courtesy of Tino's Artisan Pizza Co.
Madison earned its nickname, the Rose
City, in the 19th Century, when greenthumbed
Italian immigrants settled in
town and launched a local industry.
Things are still pretty rosy in the
Morris County borough. In New Jersey
Monthly’s most recent Top Towns survey, Madison ranked
No. 1 overall, rising on an enviable combination of excellent
schools, low crime, leafy streets and robust shops.
The highly varied dining scene—from Bottle Hill Tavern,
opened in 2018 and named for the historic Bottle Hill
District, to the venerable,
upscale Il Mondo
▲ TINO'S ARTISAN PIZZA CO.
IS A FAVORITE IN TOWN.
Vecchio—weaves through town, not contained in any
one restaurant row but enlivening stretches of Main
Street, Park Avenue, Prospect Street and Central Avenue.
On Main Street, for example, the new Encore Bar &
Lounge downstairs at Shanghai Jazz adds live music to
cocktails and small plates, and the Indian food at Begum
Palace includes many vegetarian options. On Prospect,
seafood and salads amplify the namesake offerings of
Prospect Tavern Beef & Ale.
ENJOYING FRESH,
DELICIOUS MEALS that
you don’t have to cook,
is just the beginning of your
experience with Dish Kitchen.
DISH KITCHEN is an award-winning local
meal delivery business, receiving the first
ever “Sustainability Award” from the Madison
Chamber of Commerce, and is certified by
the state of NJ as a Sustainable Business.
“We are good for people and planet”,
says Dish Kitchen. “We serve up seasonally
inspired meals that help save you time, and
deliver them in sustainable packaging that
helps save the planet.”
Seventy-five percent of ingredients come
from local NJ farms, which supports local
economy and reduces carbon footprint.
Dish Kitchen is also free of single use
plastics, using plant based, compostable
containers and reusable delivery bags. In
order to complete the circle, they collect
containers weekly and send them to a
commercial composter.
In addition, zero waste kitchen practices
consist of transforming food scraps
into house made seasonings, sauces and
stocks. “Our creative outlet not only reduces
food waste, it also enables us to deliver a
higher quality product to our customers, by
minimizing preservatives and additives that
are found in packaged products.”
“We are more than just meal delivery,
we are building a circular system to provide
fresh, nutritious meals to our community, in
an environmentally responsible way. We are
proud of our achievements to date, though
we plan to launch a reusable container
system in the future.” Reusable systems are
gaining traction in urban restaurant scenes,
and Dish Kitchen looks to pave the way in
suburban New Jersey.
Dish Kitchen is a pre-order service,
facing a similar
volunteer shortage, according
to crew chief Jack Luts. He is in
search of EMTs and ambulance
drivers. “We need people badly,”
he says.
There are several factors
contributing to the dearth of
volunteers. For one, both departments
require hundreds of hours
of training through time-consuming
programs, classes and
tests. DeRosa also says the high
cost of living in Northern New
Jersey eats into people’s free
time—they have to work more—
and makes it harder for younger
adults to stay in the area. “That
hurts us tremendously,” DeRosa
explains, because the fire department
ideally prefers
younger
“
IT'S A GIVE-BACK TO
YOUR COMMUNITY
THAT YOU'RE
A PART OF.”
volunteers in good shape, as the
role requires heavy lifting and
physically challenging activity.
“But we’ll take any able-bodied
person that’s willing to commit.”
DeRosa’s combination department—it
uses paid and volunteer
personnel—is also down one career
firefighter.
It also doesn’t help that Madison
is just over four square miles.
Sometimes volunteers
are brought
in from just beyond
the borough’s borders,
but the departments
can’t rely on people
who don’t live nearby. Response
times must be swift during emergencies.
DeRosa says the shortages are
a New Jersey-wide problem and
that “volunteerism is on the way
down, at least from where we’re
sitting.” But he and Luts believe
the rewards of lending a hand
will make up for the time commitment
required.
Luts notes that EMT training
can be used for the rest of one’s
life. “The medical knowledge
that you gain will help you in just
about anything that comes up,”
he says. And of course, there’s
the chance to make a
difference and save
lives.
“There’s always
the self-satisfaction
of knowing that
you’re helping other
people who are in
need,” Luts continues.
Adds DeRosa: “It’s
a give-back to society and
a give-back to your community
that you’re a part of. It’s
a rewarding experience. It’s a
dirty job. It’s a job that you risk
your life for, but we take a lot
of safety precautions to try to
really minimize that. The personal
rewards are many.”
Carry-On Legacy of Family Business
L to R: Betty Dangler, President/Owner
with Christine Dangler, Funeral Director
“Dangler” ...A name
that is synonymous
with family-owned
and operated funeral
homes in Morris
County. Betty and
Christine, the Mother-Daughter
Team of
Burroughs, Kohr &
Dangler in Madison,
realize that the love
and support they receive
from their family
helps them guide,
comfort, and support
the families entrusted
to their care.
With their own
experience of loss, in particular, William R. Dangler, Sr. and
James E. Dangler, (father, grandfather, and husband), Betty
and Christine realized that the loss of a loved one had a
profound impact on their lives. This realization helps them
to create a personal experience with the families they serve
during one of their most difficult times.
“I always knew I wanted to become a Funeral Director.
My Grandfather and Father taught me how to be compassionate,
empathetic, generous, and trustworthy. By their
examples, I witnessed first-hand how these traits helped to
build and maintain relationships with people. To this day,
families who dealt with my Grandfather and Father mention
how they treated them and remember how special they felt
when they were around them,” adds Christine. “It’s these
special relationships with families that I love hearing about
and we cherish as a Family
Business. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to
carry on their legacy.”
Our service to our families does not end once the funeral
is over. It continues even after the funeral. As an integral
part of this service, Betty emphasizes the importance of
Aftercare. “That is the reason I offer a seven-week Grief
Support Program in the Spring and Fall. As I continue to
connect with families during these programs, the family
members realize that they are not alone on their journey of
healing.”
In 2020, Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home celebrated
200 years as a family-owned and operated business.
Since its establishment in 1820, Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler
Funeral Home has been managed by seven generations
of families, which includes 3 generations of Dangler family
members.
Today, Betty and Christine, along with their colleagues Kip
Dangler and Samantha Muro, are honored to continue the
legacy of the Dangler Family – “Caring for families before,
during and after a loss.”
INNOVATIVE
EDUCATION
Madison’s three universities
offer exciting programs.
Photos: Courtesy of the universities
Drew University, Fairleigh Dickinson University and
Saint Elizabeth University are all located within
the confines of Madison, making the borough a true
college town.
Each school is unique, and each offers innovative
programs to give students great opportunities while
they are studying here in Morris County.
Here are three programs that are making waves with students.
DREW UNIVERSITY
• New York Semesters
Drew takes advantage of Madison’s 50-minute train ride to New
York City by offering students the opportunity to experience the
global center of culture and commerce through seven different New
York semesters. Each is capped at 20 students.
Students travel into New York City multiple times a week to learn,
network and immerse themselves in their field of study: the United
Nations, Wall Street, communications and media, contemporary
art, New York theater, social entrepreneurship, or museums and
cultural management.
The one-of-a-kind New York semesters lead to hands-on learning
experiences, relationships, internships, jobs and career paths.
FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY
• FDU at the Royal Shakespeare Company
Theater students at FDU have a unique opportunity starting this
fall: the chance to study and experience Shakespeare across the
Pond at the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company. The new
program is offering roughly 15 students the chance to participate
during the initial semester.
The program is geared toward students
who are intersted in acting, or
theater production and/or arts management,
and includes courses like
“Shakespeare in Practice,” which allows students to take workshops
at the RSC and to immerse themselves in their craft, and “Musical
Cabaret,” including a masterclass/talkback with the cast of the West
End production of Matilda.
“We think of FDU at the RSC as an integral part of—and expansion
of—our existing curricula, which focuses on the study and
production of classical theater along with musical theater, contemporary
theater, music, and dance,” says Stacie Lents, director
of FDU’s theater program.
Students live and study at the 17th-century Jacobean mansion
known as Wroxton Abbey. “FDU theater students say it’s like going
to school in an episode of Downton Abbey,” Lents says.
SAINT ELIZABETH UNIVERSITY
• Esports
It’s game on at Saint Elizabeth University. Focusing on the field of
Esports in a variety of ways, the university now offers a Bachelor
of Science in Computer Software Engineering with a concentration
in Game Development and Design. Students in the program learn
the skills required to develop games for video game platforms. The
school also offers a friendly, competitive gaming environment,
which includes a newly constructed gaming facility, plus varsity
and recreational teams.
