Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: George’s Place in the Washington Commons in Cape 

May. It is one of their two Cape May locations in addition to the original 

on the corner of Beach Avenue and Perry Street. 

The vibe: The Washington Commons location is set up a bit different 

than the original location, but it still has the same charm. There’s a 

lot of open space with both tables and booths filling the perimeter of the 

room. George’s also has the same open kitchen so you can see the magic 

happening behind the scenes. They offer the same menu and takeout so 

you can enjoy George’s inside or on the go! 

The new dining partner: Until this past week, Nicole and Kayla 

have been on a regular schedule of weekly lunches to bring you this column 

and tell you about our experiences through town. Well... Kayla has 

welcomed a new baby boy, Silas, into the world and will be out for the 

next couple months being a mom and doing mom things. Congratulations 

Kayla! We’re all fine here, we promise... we’re FINE. In the meantime, 

we’ve added a new full-time EZ-er to the mix who’s handling ads 

for Kayla, but also adding much more to our marketing, restaurant and 

events side of the biz. Courtney Rosenberg recently joined us and we 

are thrilled to have her! She’s truly a team player and willing to help 

wherever she’s needed. Including joining Nicole on a regular schedule 

of weekly lunches to bring you this column... thank you, Court! 

The food: We were HUNGRY and an early lunch is exactly what was 

needed. Courtney went for the chicken gyro while Nicole stuck with her 

favorite, the turkey and brie sandwich. It was delicious... “give me all 

the tzatziki sauce,” Courtney emphasized multiple times. Well worth 

the CHAOS of traffic Nicole had to endure on her way to pick it up. 

The takeaway: George’s is “old faithful” for us. The food is always 

good, they’re open year-round and this location specifically has plenty 

of parking. The Washington Commons location is open for breakfast 

and lunch from 8am to 4pm and dinner 4 to 8pm. Don’t forget they’re 

cash only!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

I’ve got to type fast this week so I hope 

you’re all quick readers. If you’re not, just 

do your best to keep up. Why do I have 

to type fast, you might ask? Shut up and 

I’ll tell you, I might answer. It’s because, 

as of Sunday, August 21 at 11:46am (the time 

of this writing), I am about three hours away 

from starting day 10 of a 12-day stretch of 

singing every day and I need to nap for at least 

two of those hours, which leaves me at one 

hour to produce this weekly gem which, hard 

to believe, usually takes three or four. Hence, 

quick typing. 

By the time you read this I will have 

played Exit Zero, Exit Zero, Rusty Nail, Ferry 

Station, Ferry Station, Ferry Station (twice), 

Owen’s Pub, Exit Zero, Exit Zero (twice), Ferry 

Station and Stone Harbor water tower. (My 

throat hurts just writing that.) But, thanks 

to my excellent bandmates, Jerry Kolber 

and Cathrine O’Brien, I was able to keep 

some tread on the tires and navigate my way 

through some rocky shoals. I’d thank Dave 

Hughes, too, but he doesn’t sing, so screw 

the guy. Ok, that was mean. Thanks to Dave, 

too, for being an awesome guitarist and good 

dude. (Of course, it could still fall apart before 

this goes to press, but I have faith in my ability 

to use my voice judiciously and/or numb it 

with enough Tito’s to get through a gig. I may 

have developed a drinking problem in the last 

12 days, but that’s for another column.) 

A couple of those gigs were at the BIG 

WEDNESDAY hullabaloo at Ferry Park. 

Legacy prowled the main stage and played a 

raft of top 40 hits from the last 30 years while 

the Terry O’Brien Trio played the pre-and- 

post-game shows at Ferry Station. We all had 

ourselves a day. The final Big Wednesday is 

the 31st with Hunkajunk, a retro funk soul 

band out of Philly on the main stage, with 

Gordon Vincent and Blue Street playing preand-post, 

respectively. Hard to believe we’re 

already saying goodbye to summer ’22, feels 

like it just started. Come see it out with a bang 

at Ferry Park and a day’s worth of great music. 

While bouncing between singing and 

emceeing, I had the good fortune of meeting 

Mike and Maureen Gallagher, long-time fans 

of the column, who continued a disturbing 

trend of people coming up to me and saying 

nice things. I’m not used to that. Regardless, 

it was nice meeting both of them. Maureen 

works at Hawk Haven Winery and liked my 

joke about not running through their sprinklers 

because my inner child is dead. Good 

to know my psychic pain amuses her. Sicko.

caring but figuring I should feign 

interest since he signs all my paychecks. 

After a pensive moment 

of reflection, he scratched his 

beard and answered, in his thick 

Scottish brogue, “Some days 

you’re the dog, some days you’re 

the hydrant. For today, at least, 

I’m not the hydrant.” He then 

began walking on the air and 

disappeared into the sun, like a 

sweet summer breeze that was 

never there. Or was it? (Eastern 

string music begins to play as we 

fade out.)

would like to extend our heartiest 

congratulations to digital 

media manager Kayla Jordan 

on the birth of her first child, a 

son, Silas. Undertow would also 

like to extend our condolences 

to Silas for having a name that 

will forever make him sound like 

an Old West gunslinger. “Tell 

the sheriff Silas Jordan is here, 

and that pretty soon this town is 

gonna need a new sheriff.” (Spits 

tobacco. Also, Silas is an awesome 

name. Undertow kids a lot.) 

Speaking of children of Exit 

Zero Magazine employees (Segue 

Level: Over 9000), I was remiss 

in not wishing my youngest son, 

Henry James, a happy 17th birthday 

last week. (August 15, and 

fine... that was two weeks ago 

but I promise I’m a good father.) 

If you’d have told me a few years 

ago that Henry would be the normal 

one of my three kids, I’d have 

slapped you in your stupid mouth. 

But here we are. Girlfriend, driver’s 

license, playing high school 

football… none of my other loser 

kids has all those things. Henry.

I’m not sure whether to be proud 

of him or embarrassed for Owen 

and Jackson. Congratulations, 

kiddo. 

Speaking of family members 

of employees of Exit Zero magazine 

(okay, that segue was a bit 

of a stretch..), my lovely wife, 

Cathrine, recently started her 

new job with Cape Island Foods. 

She is kind of assistant managing 

at several CIF locations before 

finding a permanent assignment. 

I’m sure wherever she ends up 

will be great, but it couldn’t possibly 

be as exciting as filling jars 

with olive oil, putting labels on 

those bottles, putting lids on 

those bottles, putting those bottles 

in a box and putting that box 

on a shelf like I did for them last 

winter. I can’t believe no one’s 

made an action-adventure movie 

yet about a guy who works in an 

olive oil factory. It’s a thrill-aminute. 

(KIDDING. I enjoyed my 

time over there. But it’s not what 

I’d call overly exciting work.) 

Thank god for the curling 

iron in the employee restroom at 

Exit Zero Filling Station. My hair 

would have been a disaster all 

weekend without it. 

It was a real Sophie’s Choice for 

me on Thursday morning. On the 

one hand, 101.5 WCFA continued 

an excellent run of programming 

to coincide with my early morning 

delivery route. On the other 

hand, 88.5 WXPN was honoring 

the 80s on their Throwback 

Thursday. So, instead of deciding 

which child will live and which 

one she’ll let die (uh, spoiler alert 

for a movie from 1982) I did the 

sane thing and toggled back and 

forth. This meant a morning 

chock full of Squeeze, REM and 

dozens of others from the last 

decade for decent music. 

Lastly this week, no, I haven’t 

forgotten the promise I made 

about losing a certain amount of 

weight by the end of the year or 

wearing a certain article of clothing 

on New Year’s Eve. I was just 

hoping all of you did. I’m going to 

do it. I wish I could say it was for 

my own general well-being, but 

it’s because Jack Wright patted 

my belly last Wednesday. So, I’ll 

be doing it out of spite. See you 

in 45lbs.

It’s an iconic symbol of love from the 

Hellenistic period (way back in 125 BC). 

You know the ancient Greek statue of 

Aphrodite, the Venus de Milo, where you 

need to imagine where her arms would 

be positioned. Now she’s been reimagined for 

the digital age in a new show by local artist 

Richard Samuelson called “The Venus File,” at 

the Soma Gallery through 18. 

The pieces are brilliant with intricate 

compositions that inspire the imagination. 

The five-foot wide painting, “The Apartments 

of Venus,” provides a rainbow slice of the 

goddess’s life. The piece “Venus Rising Up” 

is both a cascade and fireworks of imagery. 

In “Venus Communing with the Trees,” the 

forest is an unquenchable pillar of fire. All 

the pieces — both the Venus and the separate 

works — are complex interpretations from the 

artist’s mind, and they ignite ours. 

Why is the show called “The Venus File?” 

“A few years back, as respite from interlocking 

complexities of my core imagery, I started 

messing around with shapes from Matisse’s 

The Arts Column

famous cut-outs,” Samuelson says. “A change 

of scenery so to speak. Not all that curiously, 

my attention seemed to zero in on the silhouettes 

of the nudes. Before long I was arranging 

these Venuses in rows, and then layers; 

and when these layers were stacked up, they 

appeared to be the apartments of Venus. Once 

again, like so many before me, I had been 

seduced. She was my muse. Oh, poor me.” 

When the time came for Samuelson to 

end his little vacation and return to his core 

imagery, he says, “She didn’t seem to want to 

go away. I had fallen into the habit of naming 

my paintings with the word Venus in the title 

— a habit which persists to this day… And 

therein lies the story of how I came to call this 

show the Venus file.” 

Samuelson also notes, “Sometimes people 

ask about the common thread in my work 

given that, at first glance, they appear to be 

rather different from one another and even 

difficult to make sense. It’s actually a question 

that I’ve wondered a good deal about myself; 

and leaving aside the small matter that artists, 

like everyone, often ‘know not what we 

do,’ the best short answer I can think of runs 

something like this: ‘Yes, there is a common 

thread; actually, there are two of them.’ The 

first is that I am always on the lookout for 

visual metaphors for the mysterious energies 

that move us and the world we live in.”

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

North America’s boreal forests are 

the planet’s greatest bird hatchery. 

Billions of songbirds breed in those 

forested confines stretching from 

Alaska to Newfoundland. How does 

this concern us? Over the course of the next 

several weeks, Cape May becomes Bird Route 

One on the old north/south migratory highway 

as northern breeders bail for winter territories 

in the Caribbean, Central and South 

America and southern portions of the US, 

too. It’s part of a timeshare agreement that 

allows for a seasonal redistribution of life. 

Our job is to ensure that weary migrants have 

the resources they need while they are in our 

airspace. 

This means food (mostly insects) and 

habitat (mostly woodlands and brushy edge). 

Most of these southbound migrants are firstyear 

birds just learning the rudiments of survival. 

Their survival is critical if birds like 

Wood Thrush, Blackburnian Warbler, Cape 

May Warbler and Philadelphia Vireo are going 

to survive. All these species and more are 

declining, part of the three billion bird loss 

North American birds suffered in the last 

decades of the 20th Century. And, no, the 

decline has not slowed. We are facing the 

greatest ecological disaster in a generation 

and the onus is upon us to stem the tide. 

Otherwise, our children are going to wake up 

to a Silent Spring and Cancelled Skies. 

It’s not hopeless. But it is going to take the 

commitment of all human residents of planet 

earth to ensure that this world of our making 

has room enough for birds. 

You can start by making your yard more 

bird friendly. More natural plantings, less 

lawn. Lawns are avian deserts, supporting 

a handful of species but nowhere near the 

wealth and diversity found in adjacent woodlands. 

Keep bird baths filled. Migration is a 

thirsty business. Keep cats indoors. House 

cats are bird killing machines and northeastern 

birds have no historic defense against 

small feline predators. This is particularly 

true of juvenile birds. I say again, keep your 

cat indoors. That is why they are called “house 

cats.” It is estimated that over two billion birds 

are killed by house cats in the US every year, 

making cats the number one human related 

bird killer. 

In Cape May the senseless carnage is 

multiplied by our strategic migratory importance. 

Few places in the world see the density 

of migratory songbirds that are supported by 

Cape May and many birds forage on or near 

the ground.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, be a pirate! 

Have you ever dreamt of running 

away to become a pirate? Before 

you go, do your research at the 

Seafarer’s Weekend. 

Pirates have a reputation for 

ignoring rules, so it’s no wonder that budding 

hedonists dream of joining them. This 

reputation owes a great deal to Robert Louis 

Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” which sparked 

many pirate myths, including the notion that 

all pirates bury their loot. There’s also a myth 

that Stevenson was inspired by a visit to the 

Jersey shore, and that he found his “treasure 

island” where the Manasquan River meets the 

Atlantic Ocean. But Stevenson didn’t see New 

Jersey until after he wrote the book, which 

was inspired by Washington Irving’s fiction 

rather than an actual sea voyage. 

History tells us that pirates had a fairly 

rigid code of behavior, and there was little 

time for leisure aboard ship. The Welsh pirate 

Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts drafted an 

early code for his shipmates as early as 1722. 

Black Bart’s rules included a vote for every 

crew member, a ban on gambling, a clear division 

of booty, and even an early form of worker’s 

compensation, giving sailors who lost a 

limb “800 pieces of eight from the common 

stock.” Most pirates had a similar shipboard 

document, called the “Articles of Agreement.” 

Pirates had a heavy workload. Once they 

were done with tending livestock, swabbing 

decks and hoisting sails, they practiced their 

fighting skills, shooting targets and sparring 

with crew mates. Educated sailors also taught 

others to read and write. Literate pirates 

were more valuable because among the most 

valuable treasures pirates could plunder 

were maps and sailing logs. For example, 

by stealing “a great Book full of Sea Charts 

and Maps, containing a very accurate and 

exact description of all the Ports, Soundings, 

Creeks, Rivers, Capes and Coasts belonging 

to the South Sea, and all the Navigations performed 

by the Spaniards in that Ocean,” pirate 

Benjamin Sharp brought valuable info to King 

Charles II, earning him a fortune and pardon.

Weekend at Historic Cold Spring Village on 

August 27 and 28 from 11-4. There will be 

history, comedy and sea shanties, along with 

a chance to “laugh, gasp and gape in amazement” 

at the tales to be told. The Cold Spring 

Grange Restaurant will also have Seafarer’s

favorite haunts. He died this winter and there 

is a lot going on. We are here now and see the 

broken mailbox and the dents which were not 

there when we last visited. My question is, do 

we have the right to question her — she’ll deny 

everything. But what if she hurts someone?

Cape May Tennis Club is a lovely way to meet 

people. Also, Cape May National Golf Club 

if she is so inclined or just the nature trails 

which only require putting one foot in front of 

the other.

within blocks of the beach and after raising 

our four children are enjoying our time 

together. We love hosting our children and 

10 grandchildren, but on our terms. They call 

and tell us when they are coming, as though 

we have nothing to do but wait until they 

arrive. How do we tell them reservations are

EVEREST is a large two-year-old boy who
