‘Ali Barbers’ building back on the market
AN ‘AS is where is’ landmark
building in Sumner is set to
change hands for the second
time this year.
Most recently known as the
Ali Barbers building, 23 Marriner
St is being marketed by
investment specialist Courtney
Doig of Colliers and earmarked
for auction on September 29.
Doig says the
vendor of the
high-profile corner
site bought
the property in
April, but has
now had a change
of direction.
Courtney
Doig
“The owner
is committed
to a project in
Auckland, which
means this prime Sumner site is
now for genuine sale,” she said.
“This is a great opportunity for
another purchaser to add value
to the revitalisation of Sumner
Village.
“Properties in this area are traditionally
extremely tightly held
but there is more activity at the
moment, heralding an exciting
new era.”
The distinctive pink building
is believed to be more than 100
years old when it opened on the
corner of Morton and Grafton
OPPORTUNITY: The distinctive pink building at 23 Marriner St is earmarked for auction on September 29.
some years and briefly became
an orphanage in 1917. It was later
subdivided into small flats known
as Sunleigh Flats and dubbed
Faulty Towers by locals. Before
the earthquakes, its tenants
included Ali Barbers Hair Stylists.
“The building offers an astute
value-added buyer ample
scope to refurbish or demolish
and start afresh in this prime
location. It’s right in the heart
of Sumner Village, surrounded
by an eclectic mix of amenity
including cafes, the cinema,
pharmacy, supermarket and
library,” Doig said.
The flexible commercial core
zoning allows for a variety of
end uses, including retail, commercial
and residential options,
subject to city council approval.
The 490sq m building, divided
into nine ground and first floor
flats, sits on a 761sq m freehold
Ross Taylor – Black & White
by Paul thomas
When an athlete with an exceptional record of achievement and longevity comes to the
end of their career, the numbers can speak for themselves. Ross Taylor has scored the
most runs, made the most centuries and taken the most catches by a New Zealander
in international cricket. He’s the first New Zealand cricketer to play 450 international
matches. He’s the first player from any country to make 100 international appearances
in all three formats of the game: test cricket, one-day internationals and Twenty20. There
are unlikely, if not unique, aspects of Ross Taylor’s journey to becoming one of our true
sporting greats: the part-Samoan youngster, brought up in humble circumstances and a
loving and supportive family environment. In order to realise his ambition of becoming a
champion in the most demanding format, test cricket; the young captain whose dream of
leading his country turned into a nightmare that took a heavy toll on his well-being; the
resilient performer who overcame rejection and adversity to play a central role in
New Zealand cricket’s golden era. Here is the whole story - in black and white.
Sons of a Good Keen Man
life in the shadow of Barry Crump by the Crump Brothers
‘Barry was never a father to me, but he did become a friend.’—Martin Crump
Barry Crump was a titan of New Zealand writing, his semi-autobiographical novels about
life as a rugged outdoorsman selling millions of copies. In his time, he was held up as
the quintessential Kiwi bloke. He was also an unscrupulous brute, womaniser, alcoholic
and absentee husband. And he was the father of six children – all of them boys. For Ivan,
Martin, Stephen, Harry, Erik and Lyall, Barry has always been an enigma that casts a
strange shadow over their lives. This is their story - offering straight-and-true anecdotes
that grip, entertain, surprise and even provoke a few laughs. Each son writes frankly
and movingly about how they have navigated life with and without Barry. Illuminating,
essential, at times confronting, and containing never-seen-before photos. A timely
reflection on fatherhood and identity, the legacy of trauma, and how time can both heal
and ask new questions.
A Load of Bull
by amanda King
A stunning photographic book recording the extraordinary beauty of farm animals
- cattle to be precise! Amanda King grew up in Brisbane, Australia, and like so
many young Australasians before her, she eventually headed off on her OE. On her
travels, she met a Kiwi farmer, and ended up living on a farm in Canterbury, New
Zealand, and falling head-over-heels in love with country life as well as the farmer!
Photography started off as a favourite hobby - a way to capture unique split-second
scenes and make them last a lifetime. Her business really began when she
decided to create a large wall print for her own living room. An opportunity arose to
photograph a stunning highland cow. The resulting animal print became the focal
point of the room and friends started requesting similar pieces. This inspired her to
head out and take photos of other rural animals. Amanda also tells brief stories of
some of these animals, their personalities, and how the shoot day went. As you
may imagine, it’s not always entirely straightforward!
Billy Wallace: A True Rugby Legend
by denis dwyer
In 1905 Billy Wallace was selected to represent New Zealand, touring the British Isles,
France and North America, as part of a rugby team that became known as The Original
All Blacks. It was during this landmark tour that Billy Wallace showed the rest of the world
how the game should be played.
Wallace’s rugby career highlights include: scoring the first points for New Zealand in
an international test match; being the first Kiwi to score 500 points in first-class rugby;
holding the New Zealand record for the most points scored in a single All Blacks match
for 46 years. To this day Wallace holds the world record for the most points scored on a
rugby tour by any player.
Including previous unseen rugby archive and family photographs, this fascinating
biography tells the complete story of the life and career of Billy Wallace, a true rugby
legend.
Revenge:
Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors
by tom Bower
The British Royal Family believed that the dizzy success of the Sussex wedding, watched
and celebrated around the world, was the beginning of a new era for the Windsors.
Yet, within one tumultuous year, the dream became a nightmare. In the aftermath of the
infamous Megxit split and the Oprah Winfrey interview, the Royal Family’s fate seems
persistently threatened. The public remains puzzled. Meghan’s success has alternatively
won praise, bewildered and outraged. Confused by the Sussexes’ slick publicity, few
understand the real Meghan Markle. What lies ahead for Meghan? And what has
happened to the family she married into? Can the Windsors restore their reputation? With
extensive research, expert sourcing and interviews from insiders who have never spoken
before, Tom Bower, Britain’s leading investigative biographer, unpicks the tangled web
of courtroom drama, courtier politics and thwarted childhood dreams to uncover an
astonishing story of love, betrayal, secrets and revenge.
Eye surgeon pleads not guilty
to attempted murder charge
Resene DIY Card special!
• By Kurt Bayer
AN EYE surgeon has denied
attempted murder after an
alleged home invasion in
Lyttelton earlier this month.
Ian William Dallison, 65,
was named for the first time after
interim suppression lapsed
at the district court on Friday.
Dallison, who is from
Merivale and whose occupation
has been listed as doctor,
was earlier charged with
grievous bodily harm after
two people were injured in an
alleged stabbing.
Police said they received
a report of an assault at a
residence on St Davids St at
7.45pm on August 4.
“Two people are being
treated, one of them for serious
injuries, one of them for
moderate injuries,” police said
at the time.
The people involved in the
incident were known to each
other, police said.
A man was arrested at the
scene and later appeared at
the district court charged
with intending to cause
grievous bodily harm to two
people and using a pistol
EYE SURGEON: Ian Dallison has pleaded not guilty
to six charges, including a charge of attempted
murder, after an alleged home invasion in Lyttelton
earlier this month.
PHOTO: NZ HERALD
as a weapon.
At his first court appearance,
he was granted interim
name suppression.
But on Friday, new charges
have been laid in court, including
an allegation that he
attempted to murder a man
during the incident.
It’s also alleged that he had
six firearms with him at the
Lyttelton house – a Ruger
semi-automatic pistol, a Smith
& Wesson revolver, a Sterling
Model 300 handgun, an
Accelerator model handgun,
a Ruger revolver, and a small
silver handgun.
Dallison has also been
charged with unlawfully possessing
a restricted weapon,
namely a Maglite torch gun
and two mag pen guns.
The case was called in court
again on Friday where he appeared
from custody via audio
visual link and was represented
by Kerryn Beaton QC.
Through his lawyer, Dallison
entered not guilty pleas to
all six charges.
Due to the seriousness of
the attempted murder charge,
the case has now been transferred
SECOND TIME AROUND: Artist Amber Moke and a Fulton Hogan staff member hanging the repaired mural.
Mural all about community
Excess stock
prices slashed
From $15.00
• From page 1
To Moke, the mural was an
interpretation of a korowai – a
traditional woven Māori cloak
– and symbolised safety and
protection.
She wanted it to be inclusive,
to add a touch of femininity to
the area, and to create a piece
of work that acknowledged
the intergenerational efforts of
everyone involved.
About 30 to 40 residents
helped to paint the mural last
year.
Moke noted the mural was
about finding commonality
and was a great example of the
community working together.
Davidson acknowledged that
“right from the start, people
got on board and helped, from
Fulton Hogan who provided
the site, Lyttleton Port Company
with people and resource,
and Resene with a whole lot of
paint,” Davidson said.
Moke also wanted to
acknowledge Mitre 10 Ferrymead
as a sponsor.
“This empowered the community
to come together and
create the artwork,” Davidson
said.
He hoped the protective seal
would discourage graffitists
from tagging it again.
“It’s great to have this large
artwork, telling the story
of our Whaka-Ora Healthy
Harbour korowai on such a
prominent corner in port.”
The mural was a visualisation
of these Healthy Harbour
plans and represented
the environmental aspirations,
Moke said.
She appreciated all the support
and the people that made
it happen, and said she was
“really thankful to be able to
contribute to Ōhinehou vibe.”
Amazing Grace wins songwriting comp
ST ANDREW’S College head
prefect Grace Lawrence has won
the Play It Strange songwriting
competition.
The year 13 student received
an $8000 New Zealand On Air
‘special tracks’ grant to record
her song and make a music video,
and $1000 from the Rockshop.
The announcement was made
at a special school assembly and
came as a complete surprise for
the top music student.
Grace said she was “in shock”.
“I never expected to win or
even become a finalist, after
already making the finals of this
year’s Play It Strange peace song
competition.
“I’m so happy and very grateful.”
Mike Chunn, former bass
player for Split Enz and chief
executive of Play It Strange, said
Grace was no stranger to the
music awards. She was twice a
finalist in the organisation’s peace
song competition, and a finalist
in the 2021 Lion Foundation
songwriting competition.
“With her winning song this
year Grace has reached an engaging
and varied lyric and musical
standard. She is a natural and her
future is bright.”
The Lion Foundation songwriting
competition is the trust’s
flagship songwriting competition.
It attracted 352 entries this year
from year 9-13 students across
New Zealand. Following the
school presentation, Grace performed
the coming-of-age song,
Differently Now, to the assembled
students and teachers.
“I couldn’t have asked for more
support from my teachers and St
Andrew’s College over the last
five years,” she said.
“They are incredible and I
wouldn’t be able to do it without
them.”
Grace has been a prolific
songwriter on piano and strings,
and utilised synths and drums to
create a more electronic sound,
said St Andrew’s College head of
music Duncan Ferguson.
“We are incredibly proud of
Grace.”
The multi-talented musician,
songwriter and performer has
already achieved great success,
winning the 2021 New Zealand
Chamber Music Contest as a
She was also concertmaster
of the New Zealand Secondary
Schools’ Orchestra and has
had several lead roles in school
productions.
St Andrew’s College rector
Christine Leighton said Grace’s
creativity is an inspiration for
many students.
“As a head prefect this
year, she has balanced
many responsibilities and
commitments. It was fantastic
to surprise her with this award in
our cultural assembly, which
I know will mean so much to
her.”
The winning song will feature
on the 2022 Play it Strange album.
A brand new adventure playground has given South New Brighton
School another reason to celebrate as it marks its centenary
this year, with the support of Mitre 10 Helping Hands - Project
Playground.
Established in 1922, the school in the coastal east of Christchurch
with approximately 500 students, has long been at the heart of a
vibrant community hit hard by a series of events.
The Christchurch earthquakes forced many families to relocate out
of the area after their homes were red zoned, and caused the loss
of the joint Council and school hall and other facilities. After a long
wait, the rebuild of the school hall was to begin in 2020, when an
electrical fire destroyed a block of five classrooms, a library and
resource rooms.
The school’s Project Playground submission described the state of
the school’s existing play equipment as “dismal, however, any hope
of upgrading the playground area had to be put on hold while
classroom and hall design, plan and build were prioritised.
Principal Sue Walls said: “Seeing your school injured in that way is
difficult for people and it takes a long time to repair and recover.
To have something new around the school feels like the rebuilding
is starting to happen after 10 years, that we’re starting to get some
positive things happening.
“We’re a real community here and the wider community uses our
playground during the weekends and holidays, so the school is
really the hub. We’re a fair distance from another playground so to
have one that people can come to with the whole family is special.”
Despite Covid disruption and manufacturing delays, the playground
opened early on Friday 17 June to the delight of students and
teachers alike, with Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead, who also helped with
demolition and the new fence build, putting on a sausage sizzle for
the long anticipated opening celebration.
Special thanks to The Playground People for their hard work and
dedication to the ‘Project Playground’ builds.
HAVING highlighted the
purpose and function of the
Lyttelton Timeball last week,
today we focus on the original
building and some of the people
who called it home.
The 1876 Timeball Station was
designed by Provincial Architect
Thomas Cane; his charming
watercolour painting captures
the castle-like quality of the
architecture, with gothic windows
and Oamaru stone quoins,
corbels and parapets.
The building was constructed
of scoria from the Sumner Rd
quarries by William Brassington
and John Kennington, with
labour provided by prisoners
from the Lyttelton Gaol.
The tower’s beautiful spiral
staircase of Cass Peak bluestone
was much admired, not least
because the column and
cantilevered step were cut in one
piece – a rare example of this
methodology. Brassington’s fine
carved shields, which flanked the
original entry, were also worthy
of note.
The interior of the building
featured kauri and oregon
ceilings and baltic pine floors
and doors – mostly imported
wood as Banks Peninsula had
little suitable timber at that time.
With windows opening inwards,
a flat lead roof and the porous
scoria body of the structure,
issues of excessive heat, cold
and water ingress soon became
apparent.
During 1877-1878, under
the watchful eye of architect
Frederick Strouts, the building
was weatherproofed with a
stucco cement coating and
additional stone walls built to cut
the wind on the exposed site.
The first to use the building
were Alexander Joyce,
telegraphist and timeball keeper
from 1876-1914, in residence
with his wife and two sons; John
Toomey, flag signalman from
1879-1892; and Alfred Button,
a Crimean war veteran and flag
signalman and timeball keeper
from 1892-1905.
By 1911 John Porteous had
been in residence as signalman
(and from 1914-1932 also holding
the role of timeball keeper)
since 1905, along with his wife
and seven children. For this
family the damp and cramped
conditions with no bathroom
had become intolerable.
Porteous successfully
petitioned the Harbour Board
such that in 1912 Harbour
Board engineer Cyrus Williams
designed a two storey extension
with more living space. This was
built of stucco covered brick and
Oamaru stone detailing to tie in
with the original building.
Later residents included Jack
and Phyllis Burns and their
children from 1932-1941, the
Army during WW2, the Collins
family from 1943-1958, and
Owen Berry from 1959-1967.
By the late 1960s the building
had fallen into significant
disrepair and the Harbour Board
was no longer interested in its
expensive upkeep.
A group of local enthusiasts
set up the Lyttelton Maritime
Association; led by Harbour
Master Captain Roy Champion,
they began the huge task of
restoring the building and
mechanism.
However by 1973, with the
Association unable to meet
increasing repair costs, the
building and site were gifted to
the Historic Places Trust. This
enabled a major restoration, with
the guidance of architect AP
Harper and stonemason James
Cormie, to take place during
1975-1976. For some years the
building again housed private
tenants.
In the early 21st century,
the Lyttelton Timeball Station
was one of only a handful left
operational world wide and held
Category 1 Historic Place status.
Another major phase of
restoration in the early 2000s
took place under the auspices
of the Historic Places Trust,
with many expert tradespeople
involved and Goldfield Stone
leading the repair of the
stonework.
The building interior was
dressed in Victorian style and
was open to the public, with flags
again flown from the flagpole
and a daily timeball drop. In
this phase the site was a popular
venue for school visits, tourism
groups, historical and music
events, and weddings.
Tragically, the earthquakes of
2010 and 2011 dealt the building
several devastating blows. The
damage necessitated a careful
deconstruction after the building
all but collapsed in an aftershock
on June 13, 2011.
However, due to the generosity
of several major donors, in 2017-
2018 the current tower was built
by Hawkins, with stonework
completed by Bosworth and
Barthal Stone Restoration and
local company Stark Engineering
rebuilding the now automated
mechanism.
You can once again see the
tower on the skyline and visit the
site with the best view in town
SPONSORED CONTENT
A CHRISTCHURCH-based
international student has
come up with what could be a
two-pronged ‘green’ solution
to problems facing the New
Zealand building industry –
namely carbon emissions and a
critical shortage of Gib board.
Andy (Minhong) Park, 21,
arrived here from South Korea
to complete his Bachelor of
Product Design at Canterbury
University. While studying, he
recognised the significant impact
the building industry was having
on the environment – currently
contributing 20 per cent of the
country’s carbon emissions.
So, as part of his final-year
project, he experimented with a
low-cost plasterboard alternative,
which resulted in the development
of a biocomposite wall panel
that uses algae – or seaweed
– as a bio-filler.
As well as helping the building
industry reduce its footprint
through recyclable components,
in comparison to traditional
gypsum-board seaweed plasterboard
requires significantly less
energy to manufacture, further
reducing its environmental
impact.
Andy explains: “Seaweed is
fast growing at 0.5 metres per
day and is capable of sequestering
around 173 million metric
tons of carbon annually. It’s
farmed offshore, not competing
for farmable land with other
bio-based materials, making it
an attractive, low-cost farming
commodity.
“Because seaweed can absorb
carbon underwater, large
wall-panel manufacturers could
employ seaweed farming as a
carbon offset by growing it,” he
adds.
An ability to control moisture
also means seaweed bio-filler
contributes to warmer, drier, safer
homes, and preliminary testing
indicates fire performance
at the level of commercially
available products.
“Seaweed has been proven to
reduce ignition risks, increase
flame retardancy, and promote
auto-extinguishing behaviour of
seaweed-based composite systems
because it contains boron,
a natural fire retardant,” Andy
says.
“Seaweed is also recognised
for its ability to absorb and
release moisture and is a greener
alternative to traditional passive
the absence of non-recyclable
elements. This also makes it
The finished seaweed plasterboard
product has a glossy
marble surface, coloured green,
red or brown depending on the
type of seaweed used.
One more sale for Mazda’s CX-30
AS A motoring journalist for
more than 30 years, I’ve long
wanted to write – ‘I loved the car
so much I went out and bought
one.’
That has happened, and my
wife and I are now the proud
owners of a Mazda CX-30 GTX
sport utility vehicle, only the second
time we have bought a brand
new car, the first being way back
in 1982.
Weighing up the CX-30
against other SUVs of a similar
ilk was a lengthy process for us,
we needed to be 100 per cent certain
the Mazda was the right fit.
I wasn’t in much doubt though,
after having driven several since
its introduction here just on two
years ago, the CX-30 had already
made an impression on me with
its quality of build and, in this
day and age of soaring fuel costs,
relative economy.
This evaluation doesn’t focus on
the GTX, but on a newcomer to
the CX-30 range, simply badged
SP20 Blackout. It, as you would
guess, has black wheels, black
grille, black mirror caps, black
cabin theme with red stitching
and other discreet highlights. The
special edition model certainly
adds depth to the line-up and it is
priced rather well at just $44,390.
There are now five CX-30 models,
front-wheel-drive and all-wheeldrive,
and sharing between the
2.5-litre engine and the 2-litre
mild hybrid driveline that is fitted
to the Blackout model.
Let’s get one thing straight,
Mazda’s mild hybrid system isn’t
like the hybrid operation we
know so well in, say, Toyota’s Prius;
Mazda’s battery system works
solely on the energy gained from
braking and deceleration, that is
called regenerative energy and it
is stored to power the electrical
systems and assist the engine
under acceleration.
In terms of the mechanicals to
make this happen, the traditional
alternator and starter motor have
been replaced with an integrated
starter/generator, the benefit of
all of this is taking the load off the
petrol engine, thereby saving fuel
in the process.
It’s not a new system, some
premium brands have been using
regenerative energy for many
years but not so many mainstream
models come with it, and
it is just another way Mazda has
developed its drivelines so that
fuel economy has been a major
manufacturing priority.
During my time with the
Blackout model the combined
cycle fuel usage gauge never went
higher than 8l/100km, and at
100km/h the engine merely sips
fuel at the instantaneous rate of
5l/100km, the engine turning
over at just 1900rpm at that
speed. Those figures sit well with
Mazda’s figures of 7l/100km on a
STRONG LINES: The Mazda CX-30 has a flowing shape
that also combines with practicality.
MAZDA CX-30 SP20: Black wheels, grille and mirrors are features of the Blackout edition.
combined cycle average.
the car filthy as it was beautifully
If you think this economy • Price – Mazda CX-30 SP20 presented when I picked it up.
comes at the expense of power, Blackout, $44,390
It’s fair to say, though, at all
then that is not the case. Mazda • Dimensions – Length, speeds the CX-30 is a dream to
rates the 1998cc unit with 114kW 4395mm; width, 1795mm; drive and it just feels so nice and
and 200Nm, which are healthy height, 1540mm
involving from behind the wheel,
outputs and energy that is useful • Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive, pants. I asked my wife to drive for
and that is the case for all occu-
right through the rev band, peak
power developed at 6000rpm and
maximum torque at 4000rpm.
If there was one other thing
that steered me towards the
1998cc, 114kW, 200Nm,
six-speed automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9sec
a feel of the Blackout model and
during my time as passenger I got
a good account for the quality of
build and the level of fitment.
CX-30 GTX, it is that drive is • Fuel usage – 7l/100km While the Blackout edition
directed through a traditional
doesn’t get all the trimmings
six-speed automatic gearbox and gentle firming on the steering that come with the Limited and
it is similar to that of the Blackout and it loads up pleasantly when Takami grade models, it satisfies
model, with drive thereafter sent turned into a corner. Sport utility with what it does have. Of course,
to all four wheels in an on-demand
basis. I like transmission balanced it’s hard to keep in mind in the way of safety, the entire
vehicles have become so well nothing has been compromised
simplicity, and Mazda’s driveline there is quite a bit of height in Mazda range gets a five-star Australasian
I’ve looked at the CX-30
and clean while the ratios work On that subject, the fully independent
Blackout as I would any potential
characteristics of the engine. The link set-up has spring and damper
to buy a new car, and I came out
boost you get when the load is
taken off the engine through the However, that doesn’t come at the perience. That is something quite
hybrid system is quite noticeable cost of occupant comfort, there new to me, I’m generally looking
under acceleration, there is about is just enough compliance to at more of a mechanical aspect
an extra 6kW on tap. For the soak up bumps and ruts without in an evaluation, but there’s also
record, the CX-30 Blackout will jolting the in-cabin. The benefit a very human element as buyers
make 100km/h in 9sec and will of that is also the right amount and sales staff discuss options.
complete a highway overtake (80- of firming to promote controlled It must also be mentioned the
120km/h) in 6.5sec. If you like a behaviour in a corner and, of MazdaCare after sale package of
constant feel of engine urgency course, that four-wheel-drive five-year free servicing, five-year
there is also a sport mode button system is there to glean grip on all warranty and five-year roadside
that will constantly liven throttle surfaces when required.
assistance played an important
pedal response.
I didn’t take the evaluation car part in our purchasing decision.
On the open road the CX-30 off sealed roads, winter in Canterbury
BEST FOR BANKS PENINSULA
Our communities are facing challenges
and change. Our response will define us.
As a pragmatic independent, I’m solutions
focused – not politically driven.
Working together as a community is
where we draw strength. I’m ready to
lead that effort. You’ve told me that we need modern
infrastructure that works; clean water to drink. Your rates
money must be spent smarter, and Banks Peninsula needs to
receive its fair share. I will provide a strong focus on the
practical everyday realities. The things that really matter.
My management background in banking and engineering
has equipped me well with the skills to work for you.
I currently serve with Rotary, the Cressy Trust, and St John. I’m
here for our community. I was born and bred in Banks Peninsula
and it’s where I live with my family. It would be an honour
to serve as your councillor. Together we can do great things.
YOUR VOICE FOR BANKS PENINSULA
Having spent six years on the community
board and many years in community
roles, I know how important it is to have
a strong voice to share concerns and
advocate for the community. Our homes,
businesses, schools, and remote communities
need someone that understands how different our lives are in
Lyttelton, the bays and on the Peninsula compared to the city.
We must plan for more storms, floods, and droughts, as they
have impact on us all. Climate change is happening now, we
need to ensure we are addressing issues to protect our future.
Being resilient, resourceful, and prepared will help us grow
stronger and be able to live in this natural beauty that we call
home. Council spending needs to prioritise our infrastructure,
environment, and community wellbeing.
This work will be my priority and I need your vote to make
it happen. I am your voice.
THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE
As a fourth generation Lytteltonian my
love for our Peninsula runs deep. I have
worked hard on our Community Board
to value our environment, strengthen our
partnership with hapu, honour our heritage,
and fight for core infrastructure and services.
I will continue to support the things that help us build prosperous
communities and prepare us for the challenges of climate
change. After a decade working as an analyst in London’s
financial district, I gained a master’s degree in social work,
supporting our most vulnerable young people and their families.
These experiences have taught me to deliver under pressure
in tough situations and build rewarding relationships with
people from all walks of life, which will serve me well on our
Council. I pledge to listen to and learn from you, to protect
our environment and special character, and give it everything
fighting for what our Peninsula needs and deserves.
my first term on the Community Board.
We’ve worked to get the Naval Point
Lyttelton. That said, there is still more to do.
My background involves producing children’s TV shows like
success but there is still a lot more to do.
Our communities are growing but the
council is not investing in our infrastructure.
The one main road needs urgent upgrading, including flood
protection. You should be able to walk along Marine drive
without the risk of being hit by a car. It’s time for safe
footpaths. Our communities from Governors Bay to Purau
need access to high speed and reliable broadband internet.
The development of the Hunters Road site will be a
contentious issue with some councillors wanting to sell it
off and let the developer do as they please. I have always
fought for a restricted approach with infrastructure investment
before wholesale population increase.
I stand against financial stupidity but the investment in core
community projects, needs to be increased.
So I need to stand for ECan - to improve our water; to stand
up against industrial dairying; to make meaningful progress
on climate change; to get public transport moving for
future generations of Cantabrians.
I have undergraduate and Master’s degrees in biological
fix them.
We need radical action - now. People created these problems.
