HOME WASH: 

A laundering process normally defined as washing in a 

residential type top- or front-loading unit followed by tumble 

drying. Detergents used in this process are formulated for 

home use and are readily available on the consumer market.

THE IMPORTANCE OF 

FLAME-RESISTANT (FR) STATION WEAR 

For many industries, flame-resistant (FR) clothing has been widely adopted as a means of protecting employees from burn injury or even 

death. However, while the fire service community takes firefighter safety very seriously, it’s estimated that only a quarter of fire departments 

require flame-resistant station wear. Instead, the majority are wearing either cotton or synthetic uniforms underneath their turnout gear. 

FR station wear should be considered an integral part of every firefighter’s personal protective equipment (PPE) – clothing designed to be 

worn continuously in designated locations where intermittent exposure to radiant heat and flame is possible. 

I ALREADY WEAR TURNOUT GEAR, 

WHY DO I ALSO NEED FR STATION WEAR? 

The proper selection of PPE is very important, and it doesn’t stop at your turnout gear. A systems approach: building your PPE from the inside 

out, is essential in maximizing fire fighter safety. Station wear and the material from which it is made has the potential to contribute to fire 

fighter burn injury. 

Ultimately, under today’s conditions, firefighters fight fires about 10% of the time. The other 90% of the time they’re called on for non-fire 

hazards and technical rescue responsibilities, including roadway incidents, vehicle extrication, medical emergencies, hazmat, urban search 

and rescue, high/low angle rescue, swiftwater rescue and flood rescue. For many of these responses, typical structural PPE is not utilized or 

may be doffed mid-operation. However, the threat of an accidental thermal incident may still exist, making FR station wear a critical layer of 

protection for firefighter safety.

Unlike FR fabrics, cotton, although acceptable under NFPA® 1975, is a fuel and can ignite if exposed to an ignition source, 

ultimately contributing to firefighter burn injury.

INDUSTRIAL LAUNDER - LIGHT SOIL: 

This less aggressive (industrial) laundering process is commonly 

used on uniforms which are lightly soiled or made of fabrics 

that are not designed to withstand higher wash temperatures 

or harsher chemistry. In a typical light soil formula, water 

temperatures are usually held to a maximum of 140° F and 

pH to 10.5 max.

Edition. NFPA 2113 – Standard on Selection, Care, Use, and 

Maintenance of Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of 

Industrial Personnel Against Short-Duration Thermal Exposures 

from Fire, 2015 Edition, requires that garments cover the upper 

and lower body and flammable underlayers as completely as 

possible. Bulwark garments meet this requirement either as a 

single garment such as a coverall or when worn with another 

certified garment such as a shirt or pants to provide both upper

Although synthetic or synthetic blend fabrics are not compliant with NFPA® 1975, for many fire departments uniforms made 

from synthetic fabrics are still the station wear fabrics of choice. Unlike FR fabrics, synthetics easily melt, drip and can
