New attractions
at 2022 Ox Roast
The West Jefferson Ox Roast is celebrating its 71st anniversary.
Even after all these years, the West Jefferson Community Association
(WJCA) is coming up with new attractions for its signature event.
Set for Sept. 3-5 at Garrette Park, the 2022 Ox Roast will offer
a beer garden for the first time. The Jefferson Township Fire Department
will operate the garden from mid-afternoon through the
evening all three days of the festival.
“We’ve talked about having a beer garden for several years and finally
decided to add it this year. We’ll see how it goes and, hopefully,
we can expand it in the future,” said Jeff Pfeil, WJCA president.
West Jefferson’s parks and recreation department is bringing
back an old tradition by hosting a dance at the Ox Roast. Adults
and children are welcome. The dance shares the same theme as the
parade, Hawaiian Luau. A deejay will provide the music.
Speaking of music, several new-to-the-festival bands are taking
the stage. Victorious KayBirds will play soul, rock, blues and more.
Our Short Years played at a recent Friday Night Uptown event in
West Jefferson; they will perform rock tunes from the 1990s and
2000s at the Ox Roast. For What It’s Worth is another new addition
to the lineup. The group plays music from across decades and genres,
performing not only the hits but also B-sides and deep cuts.
Stage entertainment also includes the return of the West Jefferson
High School jazz band, MLC Project playing classic rhythm and
blues, jazz, funk and rock, and escape artist Michael Griffin.
A pie auction made its debut at last
year’s festival. It went well enough last year
that it’s back on the schedule this year. Proceeds
benefit the Christmas party WJCA
throws for senior citizens in the community.
the Madison County Fairgrounds in London. The American Legion Riders Post 105 hosted the fundraiser to
benefit Madison County’s Special Olympics athletes. With the call at noon for kickstands up, participants
headed to Washington Court House for the first of four stops on the annual poker run before heading back
to the fairgrounds for an evening of live music, food, raffles and contests. The poker run also included stops
in Williamsport, Mount Sterling and Orient.
the state, the groups perform multiple concerts
each day of the fair.
The experience starts days before the fair
with band and choir members arriving at
the Ohio Expo Center & State Fairgrounds
for rehearsals. This year, band members put
in four 10-hour days learning 80 songs;
choir members put in six 12-hour days
learning 40 songs. Then came the 12 days of
the fair, July 27-Aug. 7, during which they
performed for the public dozens of times.
Through it all, the students stayed on site
in dormitories at the Rhodes Center.
“They get to spend over two weeks with
like-minded kids, play a wide variety of
music, play a lot, and get a best of the best
experience,” said Elmer Broecker, West Jefferson
High School’s band director. “Those
kids are all there because they love to play
and sing.”
Clara Drummond, a junior this year, appreciated
everything about it.
“We’re a small school, so we don’t have a
big music program. I saw this as an opportunity
to have a very different experience
singing with a lot of people who love singing
as much as I do,” she said.
Clara describes herself as an introvert.
She said the time spent with 81 other young
vocalists brought her out of her shell. She
said she would recommend the adventure to
anyone.
“You learn a lot and make best friends
for life. You learn more than just music—
huge work ethic, how to make friends, and it’s like a
trial run for college,” she explained. “I would do anything
to do it again.”
She has the chance to do that as students are eligible
to apply through one year after they graduate from
high school, something Graham Gardner has done.
Graham, who graduated this past spring, has an
interesting history with the All-Ohio State Fair Band.
He was selected to participate each of the last three
years but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, didn’t get
the full experience until this year. In 2020, everything
was virtual. Participants played to tracks at home,
then organizers pulled together the different parts
into a cohesive piece. In 2021, participants met in person
for one day, rehearsing in the morning then giving
a concert at a church in Columbus in the evening.
“This year, I got two weeks to make friends and finally
get that State Fair experience,” said Graham
who plays baritone saxophone.
Part of that experience were the shenanigans that
happened among the 126 band members during downtime
and back at the dormitories.
“It got rowdy after lights-out,” said Brent Gardner,
a junior who plays alto saxophone. He described cymbals
getting kicked off beds and random sounds, like
the Taco Bell bell tone, being broadcast over speakers
in the middle of the night.
Graham lost his voice three days into the experience
due to his overzealous participation in the marching
chants. Mathew Chmil, a sophomore who plays
alto saxophone, counts nighttime hide-and-seek in the
nearby Ohio Department of Natural Resources park
as one of the memorable moments.
Silliness aside, all four West Jefferson students
came away with a feeling of camaraderie and respect
for their fellow musicians.
“All the people there had a lot of talent, and I was
very happy to be a part of it,” Mathew said.
Soil & Water banquet includes Procter Center tour
The Madison Soil & Water Conservation District
(SWCD) will hold an election for the district board of supervisors
in conjunction with the district’s 75th Annual
Banquet on Sept. 15 at the Procter Center, 11235 State
Rte. 38 SE, London. Voting will be open from 5:30 to
6:30 p.m., a tour of the Procter Center is set for 6 to 6:30,
and the dinner starts at 6:30.
The public is welcome to attend. Tickets to the banquet
are $20 ($15 for children 10 and younger) and may
be purchased from any board supervisor or at the district
office, 831 U.S. Hwy. 42 NE, London, or online at
madisonsoilandwater.com. Reservations are requested
by Sept. 1. No tickets will be available at the door.
Candidates in this year’s election are Nancy Denes-
Sparks and Suellen Graumlich Radabaugh.
Denes-Sparks, a resident of West Jefferson, has been
a special education paraprofessional and job coach with
Dublin City Schools for 22 years. In January, she took
the position of attendance counselor. She grew up in Jefferson
Township on her family tree farm, Denes Tree
Farm. She served on West Jefferson village council from
1994 to 1998. She volunteers with Sts. Simon and Jude
Catholic Church, the West Jefferson Ox Roast and various
organizations in the community. She also is a third
generation 4-H family, with her oldest granddaughter
taking a market goat and dairy feeder calf projects.
Denes-Sparks believes that Madison County has always
been a strong agricultural county and that with
current growth, there is a great need to make sure natural
resources are protected. Many areas of the country
struggle to maintain and collect quality water, so we
need to be good stewards of our water and land for future
generations, she said. Denes-Sparks knows she
would have a lot to learn as a member of the board and
welcomes the challenge to serve Madison County.
Radabaugh, a Mount Sterling resident, lives on a 97-
acre farm. She has goats, chickens and other animals,
as well as corn, soybeans and wheat. She was a teacher
Homecoming in Lilly Chapel
at Miami Trace High School from 1965 to 1991, where she taught
biology and anatomy, as well as girls’ sports. She used to be on the
scholarship committee for Madison-Plains.
Radabaugh’s biggest concern is the health of the
environment.Everyone makes decisions that can have a big impact
on the health of the creeks, she said. Anything put on the land by a
landscaping company, resident, farmer, etc., can wash off if not
properly managed. She would like to support programs that help
young people to be adequately exposed to these topics. She hopes to
bring ideas to the group, listen to others, and get new kinds of programs
implemented to address local concerns. She views the board
as a team, and she would like to be a team player.
To cast a vote, call or visit the Madison SWCD office, (740) 852-
4003, to request an absentee ballot; vote at the Madison SWCD office
during regular office hours through Sept. 20; or cast a ballot at
the banquet on Sept. 15.
During the banquet, retiring supervisor Howard Yoder will be
recognized for 14 years of service. Denes Farms LLC will be honored
as the Cooperator of the Year. West Jefferson High School will be
recognized for having Madison County’s top ranked Envirothon
team. A slideshow will honor Madison SWCD’s 75th year.
The Madison SWCD, established in 1947, is a legal subdivision
of state government that provides natural resource management
assistance to county landowners and other units of local government.
The district is funded by the Madison County commissioners.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture supplements the county funds.
The district is governed by a five-member board of county residents.
Board members serve staggered, three-year terms.
Grand marshal: Dr. Rohner
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Dr. Ralph Rohner Jr. knows a thing or two
about putting on an Ox Roast, just one of many
reasons he has been named grand marshal of
this year’s Ox Roast parade.
Ralph’s history with the Labor Day weekend
festival dates back to 1980, the year he and his
wife, the late Karen Rohner, moved to West Jefferson.
“We joined Sts. Simon & Jude Church where
we met Rudy and Joan Denes who got us into the
Community Association,” Rohner said.
The West Jefferson Community Association
hosts the Ox Roast, now in its 71st year. Ralph
was elected to the group’s board of trustees in the
fall of 1980 and remained on the board until
2013. He served three years as president.
During Ralph’s time on the board, the festival
evolved as organizers added stage shows to the
entertainment schedule, opened up space at Garrette
Park for craft booths, and expanded vendor
opportunities to commercial entities to complement
the local groups who set up shop at the festival.
While the cooking process for the famous Ox
Roast sandwiches has remained the same—beef
seasoned and wrapped in foil and set over coals
in a long, in-ground trench to cook overnight—
Ralph said a change was made back in the day
to make the meat preparation a little more efficient.
“We used to buy the meat on the bone, so we
spent Sunday cutting it off the bone, trimming
the fat, rolling it in spices and wrapping it in
foil,” he recalled. “Then we moved to Falters
(Fine Meats) who cut the meat off the bone for
us.”
The preparation process is still a herculean
chore, but association members and other folks
volunteer to get it—and the many other tasks it
takes to put on the four-day festival—done.
For many years, Ralph helped to man “The
Big 6,” a gambling wheel, at the festival where
the maximum bet was 25 cents. He and Karen
also worked the bingo tent.
“Oh, we had big prizes at the bingo tent. We
gave out watermelons!” he said with a chuckle.
Ralph cherishes the many friendships he
made during his time with the community association
and the many memories made at the Ox
Roast.
“Every year, when we closed up the festival
on Monday night, it was a feeling of relief and accomplishment,”
he said.
The Ox Roast isn’t the only thing Ralph
knows a thing or two about. He spent decades as
an orthopedic surgery specialist, operating a private
practice in Columbus from 1971 until his retirement
on Dec. 31, 2020.
Ralph was born in Columbus and raised in
German Village in the house his great-grandparents
built. He graduated from high school in
Messenger photo by Kristy Zurbrick
Dr. Ralph Rohner Jr., a longtime West Jefferson resident, will
serve as grand marshal of this year’s Ox Roast parade.
1956 and from Capital University with a degree in biology in
1960.
“I started as a physics major, but I was disenchanted with
mechanical drawing, so I went into biology because I’ve always
been interested in plants and animals,” he said.
That interest remains strong to this day, as Ralph shares
his home and property with three peacocks, two peahens, a
rooster, eight chickens, three dogs, two cockatoos, two lovebirds,
one canary, and a fox.
Ralph considered going to veterinary school after college,
but his father, who was in orthopedics, convinced him to go to
medical school. Ralph did not plan to go into orthopedics, but
he was assigned to a stint in that specialty his sophomore year
at the Ohio State University (OSU) School of Medicine.
“I don’t know if my dad had anything to do with that (assignment)
or not, but I just stayed with it,” he said with another
chuckle.
While in medical school, Ralph worked as an extern at
Riverside Methodist Hospital where he met Karen who was a
student at Riverside’s White Cross School of Nursing. They exchanged
vows in 1964, the same year Ralph graduated from
OSU. Ralph served two years in the U.S. Air Force, and the
couple raised four children, Ralph III, Laura, Marc, and
Christopher. Ralph is now grandpa to five grandchildren, five
step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and another
great-grandchild on the way.
Visitors to this year’s Ox Roast can watch and cheer for
Ralph as he heads up the parade at noon on Sept. 3. The festival
runs Sept. 3-5.

Queen cherishes reign
Hello, everyone. My
Donna Warner, thank
name is Morgan Myers,
and I’m the 2021 West Jefferson
Ox Roast Queen.
you for being my pageant
director and encouraging
me to start this journey,
A year ago, I was
along with Jeff Pfeil for
crowned and started an
amazing journey. My reign
as queen was amazing, but
I never knew how much it
would end up meaning to
me. From the videos and
pictures with my queen best
friend to “borrowing” decorations
from luncheons, this
is genuinely a year that will
live with me forever.
Being here today wouldn’t
be possible without a few
running the Ox Roast and
giving us a festival that I
was able to represent.
To my court, there is
something special about
every single one of you. I
was so scared going into
this—afraid the kids wouldn’t
like me or want to be
with me. This couldn’t
have been further from the
truth. When life had me
struggling and at my lowest
point, the parades
people, so I want to thank Morgan Myers
them. To my amazing mom:
where I got to see all of my
you’ve always had a deeper understanding of
who I am. You’ve always known that sometimes
I need a reminder that I am beautiful,
because sometimes I just don’t feel it. You
would always offer that extra compliment to
make me feel good about myself before walking
out the door. I may have had the crown
and the sash, but ,as everyone knows, you are
“Queen Tiff,” and I simply wouldn’t have
made it if I didn’t have you by my side.
To my dad: thank you for being the ultimate
pageant dad and standing by my side
when I didn’t have the courage to do things.
To my Aunt Kate and Uncle Lee: thank you
for pulling the float and for taking me places
when my mom couldn’t. We had the best
times together, from Lee telling me I looked
like the witch coming out of the well to the
endless Dr. Peppers you’d buy me on car rides.
I couldn’t have done it without you guys.
Speaking for myself and the court, you guys
did amazing stepping away from dirt drags
and trucks to being the pageant family of
any little girl’s dream. Of course. thank you
to my grandparents for lending the truck
when we needed it and watching me in parades,
and to my sister for reminding me
what she did as queen and how she “definitely”
wore the crown better than I did.
littles reminded me that even though I’m
not perfect, they still loved me for who I am.
You made me realize that maybe I am a
kid’s person after all. You guys are the future
of the Ox Roast, and I can say without
a doubt it is in good hands.
Just about every court has impacted me
somehow, but I especially want to thank the
Ashville 2021 queen, the 2021 Parade of the
Hills court, and the Swiss court for the endless
pictures, laughs, inside jokes, and memories
we made together. Saying I came to love
you as family would be an understatement.
At this year’s festival, I will crown a new
beautiful girl, and she will step in my place.
Although I’ve been dreading this moment
for all of the 365 days that I’ve had the
honor of holding this title, I know you lovely
ladies will care for her and teach her just as
you did for me. At 16, I’m starting my senior
year, hanging on to what feels like the end
of my childhood. So, I want to leave with a
quote from my favorite childhood TV show:
“Why are you so sad? Because we’re saying
goodbye, and that’s a really hard thing to
do. So, say hello.”
So, hello, everyone. My name is Morgan
Myers, and I am and forever will be the 2021
West Jefferson Ox Roast queen. Thank you.
