Placer Artists Tour 2022 Directory & Tour Guide

This year we are excited to present 110 artists, 6 Galleries and 8 Music and Art Schools over two weekends in 71 locations! Save your Guide as a year long Artist Directory resource! Most artists are available year round by appointment, and Galleries and Art Schools are ready to welcome you. Placer Artists Tour is in its 2nd year as an independent organization. We are grateful to our many sponsors who help keep us moving forward. We extend a huge thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, the Art League of Lincoln, for serving as our fiscal receiver for two years. We are also grateful to the Placer Community Foundation as they continue to support the Tour through a grant. Once again, we are partnering with the Auburn Symphony and you will be able to experience some of their musicians at tour locations. Additional musicians have been invited to perform in various studios as well. This year, we are thrilled to announce the Placer Artists Tour Endowment Fund! This is a matching fund and in three years we plan to use the interest toward our operating expenses. This legacy event honoring our artists will live on and we need your support! We have a mighty group of Steering Committee members and Regional Leaders. The work of the Tour couldn’t happen without each and every one. And, of course, we wouldn’t be able to present the Tour without your participation so please enjoy exploring our rich, vibrant arts community! Watch for our survey after the Tour as we work on building our data to support the economic impact of the arts.

An excellent place to begin the
Adventure!
Joe Strickland...“Shoreline”
My work is typically non-representational abstractions made
of organic shapes and multiple layers of color. Numerous
road trips led me to notice natural and man made landscapes
with a closer eye on the horizon. Observing the edge of
where the ocean meets the sky or a structure in the distance
to define a horizon line seems to have a grounding effect on me.
Moved by the purity of that single line has consequently
urged me to use lines and straight angles to illustrate
perspective in some of my art. I used this method to create
“Shoreline”, which is my interpretation of the beaches
along the Northern California coast.
Having “Shoreline” selected for the cover art of the 2022
Placer Artists Tour Guide is an honor and a validation of
exploring new ways of art making.
CONGRATULATIONS TO JANET PAEHLIG!
Helen Phillips Founders Award 2022 Recipient
When Janet moved from the Bay Area in the Fall of 2006, she participated in Leadership
Auburn to learn more about her community. Janet met Rosie Stilwell, who was running
the Tour, and immediately became involved. She thought “What better way to become
a part of the art scene in Placer County and what a large art scene it was, still is and
will be!”
Janet jumped in to support her community as a member and board member of
Soroptimists International of Historic Auburn for ten years. With passion and appreciation,
she has also participated in the Auburn Chamber of Commerce Meddlers and is active
with the Friends of the Library. She has participated on the Placer Artists Tour for
16 years as a fiber artist and jeweler.
Her artistic inspiration comes from her travels to various parts of the world including
Africa and Italy. Natural elements, antiquities, unique beads and fibers combine to
create her art. Janet creates jewelry, fabric wall hangings and woven scarves. Many local and distant art events have
shown her work along with offering embellishments for quilters.
Consistently demonstrating her commitment to the Tour, she has served as Sponsor Chair for eight years. Her
contributions and networking skills have contributed significantly towards the Tour’s success and sustainability. The
Placer Artists Tour team and participants are grateful for her efforts. “Now that the Tour is being run by and for the
artists and supporters of artists of Placer County, its boundaries will have no limits. As the years go by, the Tour will
become more inclusive of different art forms as well. I implore each artist to consider being a part of Placer Artists
Tour. It is an excellent way to get your art out into your community.”
“By expanding to two weekends, the public’s art search can be experienced more leisurely with time not only to visit
artists whose work they have not seen in the past but to enjoy nature’s gift in Placer County. Enjoy this abundant art
filled experience!”
“The Tour has done wonders for me!”
Cathy and Jim Haagen-Smit couldn’t think of a reason to drive around
to the open art studios, when riding their tandem bicycle would be
much more fun!
These two art loving cyclists are comfortable riding the rural roads. On weekends,
traffic is fairly light and often is comprised of others participating in the Studios
Tour. Some drivers say they’ve passed the tandem and are amazed they often
arrive within minutes of each other. They notice lots of friendly waves and
comments, as everyone is out enjoying the studios as well as the nice scenery
in between.
On the first Studios Tour they attended, Cathy and Jim bought two large
sculptures from Rodney Mott’s studio in Penryn. He was more than happy to
invite them to pick up the sculptures later.
These two insist riding between studios on a fine weekend is just plain fun!
Help save our historic arts venues!
Almost Free to All
The Carnegie Library in Auburn has a mighty group of supporters that have formed a
non-profit, Almost Free to All, to help bring it back to life after a five year hiatus. Previously,
the historical library housed artists in residence through a partnership between the Arts
Council of Placer County and the City of Auburn.
The restored library, Branches at the Carnegie, will be used for arts, cultural and educational
events. The City of Auburn has committed some funds for improvements including ADA
accessibility. However, community support is needed to move this restoration forward.
DeWitt Dilemma
The Dewitt Theater, located in North Auburn, was built by the U.S. Army in 1943 as part of
Dewitt General Hospital. The theater presented current films as well as live USO shows
featuring such performers as Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour.
For many years, the DeWitt Theater was the home of Music & More Performing & Visual Arts
Center. They have since relocated next door to 3116 Olympic Way but would love to return. A
grassroots effort known as DeWitt Community Complex has been created to prevent the
destruction of the historic and much needed theater. Architectural drawings have been
created and a business plan is in place. This group is looking for Placer County Supervisor
support in order to apply for grants and funding. Visit www.dccnorthauburn.org
Music & More Performing & Visual Arts Center is participating in the 2022 Placer Artists
Tour #52. Enjoy the works of three artists along with musical performances during the Tour.
Information concerning the restoration of DeWitt Theater will be a special concert presented
by Music and More, Sunday, November 13th, at 6pm.
Both the Carnegie and DeWitt Theater would like to hear from interested arts groups who
could make use of these restored venues. Show your love for the arts!
Arts and Culture Month
in Placer County
November is officially designated as Arts & Culture
Month in Placer County. The Arts Council of Placer
County invites you to join in the celebration!
Along with the Placer Artists Tour in November, you
will find an offering of events, classes, and experiences.
Visit a gallery, attend a live performance of the ballet or
symphony, or get your hands on experience at a sculpting
or painting class. Art should be a part of everyday living,
when it is, everyone in the community benefits!
A large role of the Arts Council of Placer is administering
grants to local artists and arts organizations, with the
goal of bringing more art to more people. We hope you
will be a part of the amazing experience art has to offer
this month. To learn more about what is offered, and how
you can support the arts in Placer County visit:
More Art!
Less Waste!
Making hands-on exploration of STEAM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Art and Math) learning accessible to all, is the mission
of ReCreate, a non-profit Rocklin business. Building interest in
STEAM nurtures a more vibrant community, and creates a stronger,
future workforce.
They also provide waste reduction education, and divert over 70
tons annually of unwanted items from businesses and individuals
to "re-create" hands-on learning and creative expression.
The Art and Maker Studio hosts events, workshops and camps, as
well as classes for adults and a drop-in studio.
The GeniusMobile, a STEAM program on wheels, brings hands-on
project based learning to schools in our region. Each year more
than 10,000 regional elementary students participate in More Art!
Less Waste!
ReCreate, the craft thrift store, helps fund visits to under-served
schools. It should be a first stop for all artists and crafters as a way
to participate, give back, and find treasures to reuse!
DISCOVER PUBLIC ART!
When in Auburn, enjoy searching
for the many public art projects
sponsored by the Auburn Arts
Commission. “Sierra to the Sea”
is mosaic mural that provides an
overhead view of the American and
Sacramento rivers. The Art Park
invites you downtown to view
“Stella Stella Stella” as you wander
under colorful umbrellas. Wonderful, and sometimes whimsical,
micro murals can be found on the many utility boxes.
The Central Pacific Railroad’s first paid freight, three mine
cart loads of Rocklin granite for a building in San Francisco,
inspired “Off the Rails” presented by the City of Rocklin Art
Task Force. See if you can spot these mining carts as you visit
the artists of Rocklin. A 30-ft high mural, by local artist John
Horton, is located on the walls of City Hall. This contemporary,
colorful mural depicts quarry workers from days gone by.
Murals can be spotted in historic downtown Roseville and
Lincoln thanks to our vibrant arts organizations, Blue Line Arts
and the Art League of Lincoln.
Public art offers a way to bring communities together and
create gathering spaces for residents and visitors alike. How
many projects can you find?
We are thrilled to announce that a fund has been established at Placer
Community Foundation to provide long-term support of the Placer Artists
Tour. Pledges from the Sky View Foundation, Mary Ann Flemmer Arts and
Environment Fund at Placer Community Foundation, the Family of Susan
Cooley-Gilliom and Joanne Neft, all strong and essential supporters of our
arts community, provide a matching challenge for the long-term support of
the Placer Artists Tour.
Your gift to this important fund will be doubled dollar for dollar up to
$250,000 and will ensure that the Placer Artists Tour will continue to impact
future generations.
“For more than a quarter of a century, we have cherished our deeply satisfying lifestyle
in the Sierra foothills and a significant contributor is the abundance of arts, culture and
vibrant volunteerism. The Placer Artists Studios Tour has been one of our very favorite
events for all this time, too. We wholeheartedly endorse and support keeping it alive and
flourishing, and encourage our friends and neighbors around the region to join us!”
– Stephanie & Bob Snyder
Legacy Fund
Creating a
Sustainable
Future
“When we moved to Placer County over 25 years ago, we noticed right away how many
nonprofits do great work here, and what an amazing giving community it is. We enjoy
supporting the organizations that benefit our residents and visitors through cultural arts,
conservation, and so many essential services. We appreciate the funds that Placer County
Community Foundation hosts that make it easy to give today and in the future.”
– Karen and Steve Killebrew
“We are supporting the arts in our area with a contribution to the Placer Artists Tour
Endowment Fund at the Placer Community Foundation. Our long tenure as arts patrons
and donors has convinced us that collaboration among all of the arts organizations
results in a stronger and more diverse community with an increased aesthetic, social and
environmental awareness in its citizens. We encourage participation with and support of
the Auburn State Theatre, the Auburn Symphony, the Placer Artists Tour, the Arts Council
of Placer County and all of the other organizations and events that support the diverse
artistic creativity in our region.”
led by Placer County and developer Mercy Housing, was officially opened this past May.
Mercy Housing, along with the Placer Community Foundation, made a commitment to making
art a cornerstone of this development, for residents as well as the entire Auburn community.
A Selection Committee was formed; a Call to Artists went out to local artists; and two
wonderful artist proposals were selected.
The exterior sculpture, titled “Three Feathers”, was created by local artist Norm Tucker and is
made out of more than 2,000 lbs of corten and powder coated steel. “Three Feathers”
endeavors to honor the heritage of this site, which is the traditional land of the Miwok, Nisenan,
and Maidu tribes. This sculpture was made possible by PCF donor, Mary Ann Flemmer.
Stan Padilla’s contribution resides in the Community Room, titled “The Song of the
Baskets”, and is a bas-relief, multi-paneled, painted assemblage. This piece expresses an artistic
affirmation of living in harmony with nature. In addition, in the fall, Stan will create a tiled
wall in the courtyard, titled “Balance of Nature - Water is Life - The Sun Gives Life”, which will
be completed by engaging the housing residents.
WELDERS TO PAINTERS...EXPLORING NEW DIRECTIONS
Many Tour artists are exploring new mediums and will share a variety of new works on
the Tour this year. Metal sculpture artists, Jay Stargaard and Jennifer Johnson, have
begun to paint!
“As a metal sculptor for the past 17 years, I had no idea I would find a passion for mixed
media painting. To my surprise I love it. Because of our incredible community of artists it
has been a delight to study with some of my local artist sheros! This experience has not
only allowed me to flow a new way of expressing myself but it has also strengthened my
bond in our artists community.” – Jay Stargaard #70
“I think of connecting and creating with family. I close my eyes and imagine. I am inspired
and so I create. I forget everything except how we connect, how we communicate and
how to put that in a sculpture or painting so that I do not forget how to live.”
– Jennifer Johnson #55
“During the 2021 Studio Tour, I had an abstract
painting on an easel and had slips of paper where
people could put down their name, and email
address and “what they saw” in the picture. The
prize was a 6 x 6 painting of their choice. This is
Declan (age 7) - he won the drawing! He chose
the encaustic painting called “Going Home” as
he saw his little dog trying to get home before
the big storm.”
