& Programs

The Role of Arts in
a Changing World
As we continue to navigate the
uncertainties of a global pandemic,
we know the arts play a crucial role in
learning, healing, and social change.
With evolving philosophies in arts education and new models
for communication in the digital realm, UMS remains steadfast
in its commitment to offer arts experiences that are engaging,
thought-provoking, and accessible to everyone.
The arts have inspired curiosity, challenged beliefs, envisioned
new possibilities, and promoted action for positive change for
centuries. During our 2022/23 school year, we invite students
and educators to experience how the performing arts can be
a catalyst for meaningful conversations, offer new lenses of
understanding, and create space to develop empathy.
Connection
Between the
Arts & Social
(SEL) in everyday practice and across multiple competencies.
Participating in the arts enhances self and social awareness, increases
self-management, builds relationship skills, and cultivates responsible
decision making. Incorporating arts practices into teaching and
learning strategies directly supports SEL in child development.
Climate change — an issue that is frequently cited by youth as one of the most pressing
issues of our time — takes center stage in this ingenious theatrical presentation. Like
its title, this performance is a palindrome that you will be able to see both forwards and
backwards — because some people believe humanity is moving forward, while others
believe the opposite. Some say the world is coming to an end, and others call them
doomsayers. No matter who is right, in our quest for progress, we have dramatically
changed the world we live in. Are our actions irreversible? Or can we undo them?
SDP+
Free program!
UMS ARTIST FACILITATORS IN YOUR CLASSROOM
Formerly called pre- and post-show in-class workshops, SDP+ is
presented in conjunction with UMS School Day Performances. UMS
collaborates with highly skilled and knowledgeable artist facilitators
to create an arts-integrated workshop that will prepare your students
for the performance. The 30-45 minute workshop (in-person or
digital) connects directly to your school curriculum. Students actively
explore, experience, and express the art form and themes from the
performance right in your classroom. And the learning does not stop
there — after the performance, the UMS artist facilitator returns to
lead students in discussion to help them synthesize their learning
experience.
And the good news is that these workshops are offered FREE of charge.
When you register for a School Day Performance, please indicate if you
are interested in having a UMS artist facilitator visit your classroom.
