FROM THE MANAGER
IAN EVATT
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF
BOLTON STADIUM FOR TODAY’S RETURN TO SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
ACTION AGAINST CHARLTON ATHLETIC.
A warm welcome also to the
Addicks’ manager Ben Garner,
his staff and players, and to all
who have travelled up from South
London.
Tuesday’s mid-week victory against
Crewe Alexandra in the Papa Johns
Trophy gave us a great boost
of confidence heading into this
afternoon’s fixture.
Of late, we had been struggling for
goals, which is most unlike us. It
hasn’t been for the lack of creativity
because we generate so many
opportunities. We hadn’t been
taking them but on Tuesday we
were more clinical and we can still
improve in front of goal.
At times, some of the football we
played was breath-taking, although
I was a bit disappointed by the
manner in which we conceded
the goal and how many chances
we created before we found our
clinical edge.
Looking back, we should have had
quite a few more goals than the four
we scored but, overall, I thought
the performance was excellent and,
coupled with a comprehensive win,
it has given us plenty of confidence
going back into the league
programme.
The game also allowed me to
make a few changes to the team
and I was delighted to see Eoin
Toal make his first appearance in
a first team shirt for us. He’s going
to become a very important player
for us.
With Josh Sheehan back as well it
is like having a brand-new player
in the ranks. I thought he was
excellent for us and you could
immediately see the quality he
brings to the table.
I’m writing these notes ahead of
Thursday’s transfer deadline and I
hope that we would have managed
to get a little bit of business done
in order to enhance the quality we
have at our disposal.
The arrival of Owen Beck on loan
from Liverpool certainly does that
and we’re delighted to have been
able to bring him in to supplement
the squad.
The defeat at Plymouth over the
Bank Holiday weekend was a
disappointing one to take as I don’t
think we deserved to lose. We
dominated the game in the middle
of the park but lost the battle in
both boxes, which you simply
cannot do.
Today’s game will be another
tough challenge, and under Ben,
Charlton have had a decent start
to the campaign. That said, if we
maintain the standards we have set
ourselves and show that defensive
resilience and attacking edge we
are capable of, then I’m sure we will
get our just rewards from the game.
We want to get back to winning
ways in the league and playing in
front of a vibrant crowd at home
provides us with that platform.
Today is another of our Family
Days and it’s something that the
club does really well. We have had
tremendous crowds at the UniBol
this season already, and today
will be another opportunity for the
club to welcome new supporters,
whether that be friends and family
members of existing season ticket
holders, or people who are new to
the community.
Today’s fixture is also a celebration
of the Her Game Too campaign,
a fan-led movement that aims to
foster an ethos of respect and
inclusivity for women across the
game. Football is everyone’s game.
Here at Bolton Wanderers we want
to make everybody feel welcome.
We are a club who is not only
proud of our long and distinguished
history but one that is excited by
what the future holds - and every
single supporter can play a part in
what we aspire to be.
Enjoy today’s game and if you are
here for the first time watching
Bolton Wanderers, I hope that you
continue to support the club and
become a part of our family.
WANDERERS NOTICEBOARD
OPENING THE
FANZONE BAR
IN HONOUR
OF DAVE
HIGSON
Ahead of the home fixture against
Sheffield Wednesday Barbara
Higson and other members of the
late and legendary Dave Higson
were welcomed as guests of the
Club to officially open the Dave
Higson Bar in the Fanzone.
Dave was the voice of Bolton
Wanderers with his legendary
catch phrase “What a Ding –Dong-
Do” providing the commentary on
Bolton Wanderers video’s for over
10 years. Dave sadly died in 2005
but his videos are still revered and
played out to this day by fans all
over the world. He followed BWFC
everywhere and was deemed an
institution.
Best known for his work as a
commentator on Roadrunner video
when covering the Wanderers
games between 1988 and 1995
in the late 1990’s he also made
an appearance on BBC’s Fantasy
Football League alongside David
Baddiel and Frank Skinner.
Following the opening of the bar
in the Fanzone, Barbara and family
were invited on to the pitch at halftime
where they met up with Super
John McGinlay, who presented
Barbara a signed shirt along with a
presentation trophy from members
of the supporters Trust in honour
of Dave.
Phil Mason, CEO of Bolton
Wanderers in the Community and
Club Chaplain said “The Club
were really keen to take forward
the idea of naming the Fanzone
bar after Dave as a fitting tribute
to someone who was loved by all
fans and an important member of
the BWFC family”.
SUNSCREEN
PROTECTION
FOR BWFC
In partnership with Bolton
Wanderers in the Community,
Bolton Wanderers Football Club
have installed free Sunscreen
Protection dispensers at the
StAidyum and Training Ground for
first team players, academy players,
coaches, community activities
and ground staff that are training,
playing and working outside
exposed to the sun.
This initiative has been dedicated
in memory of Aidy Harrison who
tragically died aged 34 on 20th
November 2022 and who was
diagnosed with skin cancer five
years before his death that spread to
his lungs. Adrian, a massive Bolton
Wanderers fan, served in the British
army in Germany and Afghanistan.
Following his service he worked as
one of the BWFC match-day staff
incident team.
His parents are keen to highlight the
importance of sunscreen protection
from an early age and through this
initiative are able to get this message
out on a wider platform.
Michael Foster, Facilities and Safety
Coordinator has worked hard to
source the right dispensers and
product for this initiative.
Phil Mason, CEO of BWitC and Club
Chaplain, said “I was with Aidy and
his family on the day he died and it
was so sad to see such a lovely lad
of only 34 lose his life in such a way.
The pain of having to say goodbye
and letting go was unbearable for
all the family. No parent want to
go through the loss of one of their
children and the family miss Aidy
dearly. Hopefully with this initiative
we can do something positive in
his memory, raise awareness of the
need for sun protection, and save
others from getting skin cancer”.
First team Manager Ian Evatt met
with Aidy’s parents at the training
ground and was keen to support this
important initiative and get the word
out about the right protection.
A very happy
birthday to
RICH MARSDEN,
lifelong supporter
and dedicated
fan both home &
away! Let’s hope
the wanderers
have a win for a
truly memorable
day Love from all
his family xxx
Wanderers bounced back to winning ways with an
emphatic victory against Sky Bet League Two side
Crewe Alexandra to get their Papa Johns Trophy
campaign off to a flying start.
Amadou Bakayoko finished excellently from inside the
box within the opening five minutes of the game to give
Ian Evatt’s side the lead, but Courtney Baker-Richardson
forced home an equaliser just after the quarter-hour mark.
The substitutes would make all the difference in this one,
with Dion Charles coming off the bench to score a brace.
His first was a superb composed finish from an acute
angle after rounding Dave Richards, and his second was
a sliding effort at the far post after latching onto Jack
Iredale’s low cross.
Between that, Kieran Sadlier produced an explosive effort
to find the top corner after playing a sharp one-two with
Elias Kachunga, with Wanderers really turning on the style
in the latter stages of the game.
THE SPINE OF THE TEAM
GOALKEEPER | JOE WOLLACOTT
AGE: 25 | PREVIOUS CLUB: SWINDON TOWN
The Bristol-born Ghana international stopper came through the ranks at
Bristol City but made his professional debut whilst on loan at Clevedon
Town in 2013/14. Going onto also spend time on loan with the likes of
Bergsøy, Truro City, and Gloucester City, he completed a permanent switch
to Swindon Town in June 2021 after spending the back end of the 2020/21
season on loan at the County Ground.
A key figure for the Robins last season as they reached the play-offs, after
making 39 appearances last term, he reunited with Ben Garner by signing
for Charlton Athletic in the summer. Capped 10 times for Ghana since last
year, Wollacott has enjoyed an encouraging start to life at the Valley.
CENTRE BACK | RYAN INNISS
AGE: 27 | PREVIOUS CLUB: CRYSTAL PALACE
An imposing central defender, Inniss has had a bit of a stop-start time at
Charlton Athletic since his move to the club in October 2020, but he has
started the season as a regular in central defence and will be hoping to
help the squad achieve their goals this term.
A graduate of Crystal Palace’s academy, Inniss made just two appearances
for the Eagles and gained the vast majority of his experience whilst out on
loan with the likes of Yeovil Town, Port Vale, Southend United, Colchester
United, and Newport County. Since his move to the Valley almost two years
ago, he has made a total of 38 appearances (2 goals).
ATTACKING MIDFIELDER | SCOTT FRASER
AGE: 27 | PREVIOUS CLUB: IPSWICH TOWN
Fraser’s professional career began with his hometown club Dundee United,
and his debut came in a 3-1 defeat at Celtic in May 2014. Following a loan with
Airdrie in 2014/15, he went onto become a key player for his parent club and
made 106 appearances (15 goals) before a move to Burton Albion in July 2018.
Enjoying an impressive couple of years at the Pirelli Stadium, he made 91
appearances (16 goals) before earning a switch to MK Dons in September
2020. Scoring 14 times for the Dons during the 2020/21 campaign, he
was snapped up by Ipswich Town in the summer of 2021, but after just 20
appearances for the Tractorboys he joined Charlton Athletic in a permanent
switch in January 2022.
STRIKER | JAYDEN STOCKLEY
AGE: 28 | PREVIOUS CLUB: PRESTON NORTH END
Stockley was a revelation for the Addicks last season during a difficult campaign
and managed to net an impressive 20 goals in 38 appearances. The Bournemouth
academy graduate has scored just a single goal this term at the time of writing – that
goal coming in a 5-1 demolition of Plymouth Argyle.
Making 22 appearances for Bournemouth after coming through the club’s youth
system, he signed for Aberdeen in June 2016 but returned to England to sign for
Exeter City a year later. During a year-and-a-half at St. James’ Park, he scored 41 goals
in 76 appearances and subsequently earned a £750,000 move to Preston North
End. After 18 months in the North West, Stockley moved to Charlton Athletic on a
permanent basis following a loan spell during the second half of the 2020/21 season.
THE BOSS…
Appointed in the summer as the club’s new Manager, the Addicks
will be hoping for less of a turbulent time on the managerial front
than last season. Nigel Adkins began the season in the hot seat at
the Valley before Johnnie Jackson’s appointment and subsequent
departure following the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
Ben Garner is now in charge in South East London and arrived
after guiding Swindon Town to the League Two play-offs in just his
first season in charge of the Wiltshire club. The 42 year-old has
overseen an encouraging start to the season for his Charlton side,
and the former Bristol Rovers boss will be targeting a top six finish
this time around with the Addicks finishing in the bottom half of
League One last term.
MUSINGS
WANDERERS
MATTERS WITH
CLUB HISTORIAN
SIMON MARLAND…
GET THE SUB WARMED UP!
Whilst we now take five
substitutions during a game as
the norm, on the opening day of
the 1965/66 season, history was
made in a Second Division fixture
between Bolton and Charlton at
Burnden Park when the first ever
League substitute was made.
Eleven minutes into the game
Charlton’s Keith Peacock came on
for the injured ‘keeper Mike Rose.
He couldn’t prevent Wanderers
running out 4-2 winners with a
couple of goals from Francis Lee, a
goal from Warwick Rimmer and an
own goal from Billy Bonds before
12,744.
The new substitute rule that
season was only allowed for
injuries and it was to be a further
two seasons before they were
allowed for tactical reasons.
Peacock went on to play more
than five hundred games for the
Addicks and in 2013 was inducted
into the Club’s hall of fame.
Bolton’s first League substitute
was Gordon Taylor who replaced
the injured John Napier in a 3-2
home defeat to Southampton in
September 1965.
OLD FACES RETURN AS
PUNDITS.
A couple of old faces returned to
the Wanderers as SKY TV pundits
for the Carabao Cup tie with
Aston Villa.
Emile Heskey, now head of
development at Leicester City
Women, joined the Wanderers in
December 2014 from Newcastle
Jets. International clearance was
received on Christmas Day and he
made his debut the following day
as a substitute coming on to score
as Wanderers came from behind to
defeat Blackburn Rovers 2-1.
EMILE HESKEY SCORES
BOXING DAY 2014.
Kevin Nolan needs little
introduction to most Wanderers
supporters. A product of the Clubs
Academy, a Club captain with
over 300 appearances, he netted
twice in his first Premier League
game, on the opening day of the
2001/02 season as the Wanderers
won 5-0 at Leicester and scored
in successive seasons in victories
over Manchester United at Old
Trafford. Now a first team coach
#20 KIERAN
LEE
20 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888

GROWING UP AT MANCHESTER UNITED, KIERAN LEE WAS
USED TO IMPRESSIVE SURROUNDINGS.
And being a North-West lad, the
Stalybridge-born midfielder also
has a recollection of Wanderers
taking up residence in their new
home 25 years ago this week as
United’s peers as top-flight club.
“I was only nine, but I do remember
them coming to play in the
stadium,” said Lee.
“It looked good and even now it
still looks really well and is a nice
stadium to play in.
“It’s a big club. My girlfriend is from
not far away from here and a lot of
people she knows are Bolton fans.
“You seem to see them pop up
everywhere, so it’s still a big club
and we are aiming to keep pushing
it that way.”
Wanderers played their first
Premier League game at the then
Reebok Stadium on 1 September,
1997.
In a quarter of a century since, the
Whites have seen plenty of highs
and their fair share of lows.
This past week also brought
another key anniversary as
it marked three years since
the Sharon Brittan-led board
completed a deal to save the club
from going out of existence.
It’s been a steady climb since, with
the arrival of Ian Evatt two years
ago accelerating the process with
promotion in his first campaign
in charge and a top-10 finish in
League One last season.
Evatt has overhauled the playing
staff during that time, with Ricardo
Santos and Gethin Jones the only
survivors from his opening game.
And of the signings Evatt has
made in the intervening period,
Lee – pictured in Wanderers’
2107/18 kit as we mark 25 years at
the University of Bolton Stadium –
remains one of the shrewdest.
A free agent after ending an
outstanding eight-season stay
with Sheffield Wednesday in
the Championship during the
uncertainty of the Covid period,
Lee signed a deal with the Whites
in January, 2021.
And he’s been a class act ever
since, one of the catalysts for
the promotion push and a key
component of Wanderers’ League
One challenge either side of the
heel operation he underwent
which kept him out of the run-in to
last season.
“I’m over that and I feel fine. I feel
as a good as I always have,” said
Lee, 34 years young.
“I’ve been in and out a little bit so
far this season with rotating the
team quite a lot, which is probably
helping me, but every time I’ve
been on the pitch I’ve felt it good.
www.bwfc.co.uk
The Wanderer | 21

IT’S GOOD TO
PLAY AGAINST
A PREMIER
LEAGUE
SIDE AND I
THOUGHT WE
GAVE A GOOD
ACCOUNT OF
OURSELVES
FOR A QUITE
A LONG
TIME IN THE
GAME…
“A lot of the lads here are quite
young and building their careers,
so it’s nice to help them and they
can run for me I suppose!”
What Lee lacks in running power,
he more than makes up with the
vision and guile of a creative
midfielder who briefly made it
to first-team level at Old Trafford
before becoming a regular at
Oldham and then Wednesday.
And when he faced Aston Villa in
the Carabao Cup last week, he
also showed he can cut it with the
best – even if he wouldn’t admit it
himself.
“It’s good to play against a Premier
League side and I thought we gave
a good account of ourselves for
a quite a long time in the game
before their quality shone through
in the end,” he added.
“I’m not very good with praise. I
don’t like looking at myself but it’s
nice to play well and with the game
being on television.
“It is nice but I’m more about the
team and we lost, so it wasn’t the
perfect night in the end.”
Lee won’t play every game this
season and was given a night off
as Wanderers got back to winning
ways with their mid-week Papa
Johns Trophy victory over Crewe
Alexandra.
Making progress up League One
remains the priority, however,
and Evatt’s men will be looking
to resume that when they face
Charlton Athletic this afternoon.
Last season Wanderers completed
the double over the Addicks, with
Lee scoring twice in a memorable
4-1 win at the Valley.
And a repeat would be timely
as the Whites aim to make up
lost ground following successive
league defeats, including last
weekend’s 2-0 loss at Plymouth.
“Saturday was a tough one to
take,” admitted Lee. “It was a game
we could have won and we need
to bounce back from the two
defeats and get back on track.
“We’ve lost the last two but before
that we were doing well and
there’s still a lot of confidence in
the team that we can try and push
on.”
Over the course of the campaign
Lee is sure to have a key role to
play and he’s determined to wring
every drop out of what’s already
been a model career to help
Wanderers achieve their goals.
“I’d like to play as much as I can. I
know we’ve got a big squad and
a good squad, which will probably
get rotated,” he said.
“But I still feel good. There’s plenty
of life left in me yet.”
#HerGameToo
Today’s fixture is a celebration
of the Her Game Too campaign,
a fan-led movement that aims to
foster an ethos of respect and
inclusivity for women across the
game.
Wanderers, with the support of
the Bolton Wanderers Supporters’
Trust, were proud to officially
partner with Her Game Too in
March of this year. And, working
closely with Her Game Too Club
Ambassador Emily Parker, hopes
today’s events will bolster that
relationship and further support the
aims of the campaign.
Since its launch in May 2021,
Her Game Too has enjoyed
widespread, nationwide support.
A growing list of EFL and Premier
League clubs have now pledged to
ensure women and girls of all ages
feel confident and safe sharing
their opinion about football both
online and in everyday life, without
fear of sexist abuse.
A recent survey of 400 female
football fans, carried out by the
Her Game Too team, discovered
that 92.3% had seen sexist abuse
online and 62.8% had actually
experienced sexist abuse online
– a stark indication of why the Her
Game Too campaign is necessary
and important.
We’re pleased to welcome Club
Ambassador Emily to the game
today, along with the club’s Her
Game Too Advocates; Angela
Abbott, Abbie Morton, Rachel
Ryder, Emily Cronshaw and Kelly
Thorpe.
As well as the Her Game Too
team, almost 200 girls from Bolton
Wanderers in the Community’s
Development Centres have
been invited to the University of
Bolton Stadium this afternoon and
Bolton Ladies and Girls players
will take to the pitch at half time.
In addition, the players will warm
up in Her Game Too t-shirts, all
today’s mascots will be female and
you’ll see the Her Game Too logo
around the stadium throughout
today’s game.
Bolton Wanderers is an inclusive
club where women play key roles
both as fans and as staff in senior
roles across the club’s operations.
After a summer of exceptional
success from the Lionesses,
women’s involvement in every
aspect of the game continues to
rise and Wanderers are proud
champions of this move towards
equality.
However, there is still some way to
go so should you ever be subject
to or witness any incidents of
sexism at the University of Bolton
Stadium, please report this directly
to the ‘One Wanderers’ reporting
system via text or WhatsApp on
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
AND FUN(DING)!
This summer, Bolton Wanderers
in the Community (BWitC) has
been able to offer a wide range of
exciting and engaging activities
for young people right across
Bolton, thanks to some amazing
funding opportunities that have
been offered.
HOLIDAY ACTIVITY
AND FOOD FUNDING
Through Department for
Education ‘Holiday Activity
and Food’ (HAF) funding,
BWitC delivered 4 exciting new
sessions per day throughout
summer, in order to help young
people stay active, whilst eating
a healthy, balanced meal.
BWitC’s sessions took place in
Kearsley Academy, St. James’
CE High School in Farnworth
and St. Catherine’s Academy in
Breightmet, as well as offering
fun and exciting activities at
Bolton Council’s park-based HAF
sessions at Queens Park, Moses
Gate, Central Park Westhoughton
and Moss Bank Park. Through
these sessions, BWitC has
engaged hundreds of young
people across Bolton in safe and
engaging activities.
BOLTON’S COMMUNITY
SAFETY PARTNERSHIP
X STREETGAMES -
VIOLENCE REDUCTION
FUNDING
As well as HAF, BWitC has
gratefully received further
summer funding from Bolton’s
Community Safety Partnership,
distributed through community
sport organisation, StreetGames!
This funding, focusing on Violence
Reduction, has allowed BWitC to
add even more daytime sessions
at PowerLeague Breightmet,
Harper Green Playing Fields and
Pikes Lane in Gilnow – allowing
more young people to take part
in structured and safe sessions
throughout summer.
STREETGAMES
SUMMER CAMP
AND PRIDE HOUSE
BIRMINGHAM
In July, BWtiC had the opportunity
to take a group of young LGBTQ+
people to the StreetGames
Summer Camp in Birmingham, as
part of an ongoing project with
BWitC’s LGBTQ+ Youth Club and
Pride House Birmingham.
Pride House provides a safe
space and a welcoming, inclusive
environment for LGBTQ+
supporters, athletes, staff,
volunteers and organisations at the
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth
Games. BWitC worked with Pride
House to engage participants from
their weekly LGBTQ+ Youth Club
in a project to create “TikTokstyle”
dances to be shared on
Social Media to try and engage
young LGBTQ+ people in the
Commonwealth Games and
promote accessible activities. The
group created 3 dance videos
and then were able to attend the
StreetGames Summer Camp to
perform and teach these dances
to the other young people at
the Camp! Our participants and
staff were also able to watch the
Commonwealth Boxing at the NEC
and had the most amazing 4 days
camping with other young people
from across the country.
Further to this, BWitC’s LGBTQ+
participants also took part in a
number of other Pride House
Youth activities, such as writing
letters of support and solidarity
to LGBTQ+ athletes and visitors
of the Commonwealth Games,
and also engaging in a number of
youth-focussed Future Aspirations
workshops with notable figures
in the world of LGBTQ+ sport and
inclusion.
clubs and communities, have
a presence at football grounds
and sports bars to build a more
welcoming environment for young
girls and women and to continue
to campaign against sexism in
football and online abuse.
Here at the Bolton Wanderers we
have our own champion in Emily
Parker who has been passionate
about bring this day together and
creating a positive environment
in our club for women and girls
across all we do including in the
Fanzone.
The success of the England
women’s team at the Euros has
brought into focus women in the
game and is truly to be celebrated,
but there is also a recognition that
this is just the start and there is
still a long way to go in bringing
equality to the game.
We are blessed to have Sharon
as our Chairman of this football
club who is bringing a change in
the way we look at the game and
the football industry and so we
are in a strong position to make a
difference and, if we join together
at all levels, we can ensure this is
her game too.
Enjoy the Game,
MEMORABLE MATCHES
SEASON 2022/23 MARKS THE 25TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
BOLTON STADIUM.
THROUGHOUT THE SEASON CLUB
HISTORIAN SIMON MARLAND WILL LOOK
BACK AT SOME MEMORABLE GAMES.
Sunday 16th May 1999
Nationwide League Division One
Play-Off Semi Final First Leg.
Bolton Wanderers 1
Ipswich Town 0
The Wanderers faced Ipswich for
the third time in five months and
once again came out on top to
set themselves up for the second
leg at Portman Road the following
Wednesday.
In the League encounter in Suffolk,
Bolton’s winner came in the last
minute, on this occasion the
winning goal came six minutes
from time to give them the initiative
against a side who were appearing
in the play-offs for the third
consecutive season.
It was a tactical double substitution
by Colin Todd that led to the
winning goal. Michael Johansen,
switched to the left wing in place
of Ricardo Gardner, who laid the
ball up to Bob Taylor who used his
strength to hold off the challenge
of Tony Mowbray to chest a return
back into the path of the Dane. His
right footed shot curled beyond
England Under-21 ‘keeper Richard
Wright, who had kept 30 clean
sheets during the regular season,
into the net to send the home
crowd into raptures.
Earlier, the Wanderers had a let off
when Mark Fish sent Town striker
David Johnson flying in the penalty
area, referee Mark Halsey and his
assistant seeing nothing wrong
although time seemed to stand still
before he awarded a corner.
Full back Neil Cox won the man of
the match and he claimed that the
Wanderers were always going to
score goals wherever, encouraged
by the team’s 78 goal League haul,
only bettered by Sunderland and
Bradford.
The following Wednesday in the
second leg, it was the Wanderers
that progressed to Wembley on
away goals, losing 4-3 on the night,
but not before having to endure
extra time, having been thirty
seconds away from victory during
normal time.
Team: Banks, Cox, Todd, Fish,
(Bergsson), Elliott, Johansen,
Jensen, Frandsen, Gardner,
(Warhurst), Taylor, Gudjohnsen,
Wednesday 12th January 2000
Worthington Cup
Semi-Final First Leg
Bolton Wanderers 0
Tranmere Rovers 1
The Tranmere jinx of the 1990’s,
that began with a heartbreaking
1-0 play off defeat at Wembley
in 1991, continued into the next
decade when the Birkenhead side
put one foot into the final thanks
to Clint Hill’s 23rd minute strike.
Bolton had gone into the game
in confident mood having won a
fourth round FA Cup tie at Grimsby
Town but were without Mark Fish
who had left to join up with his
South African team mates for the
African Nations Cup.
Although it was a below par
performance from the Wanderers
they had enough chances to have
at least gone into the second leg
on level terms. Michael Johansen
saw his goal bound shot pushed
onto the post by Dutch ‘keeper
John Achterberg in the 14th minute
and, eight minutes from time,
the woodwork came to Rover’s
rescue again when substitute Dean
Holdsworth’s left foot snap shot hit
the post.
Wanderers best opportunity
to level matters came seven
minutes from time when Eidur
Gudjohnsen’s point blank header
from Paul Warhurst’s cross was
straight at Achterberg.
But for all the might have-beens
the defining moment came from a
corner when Hill slid in at the back
post to get the decisive touch after
Gary Jones had headed on.
Before the second leg a fortnight
later the League form continued
to be good with victory at QPR
and a draw with Ipswich at the
Reebok. Unfortunately the return
proved to be a disaster with Rovers
scoring twice in the opening
twenty minutes before running out
3-0 winners to earn their first ever
appearance in a major final.
Team: Banks, O’Kane, Bergsson,
Ritchie, Whitlow, Johansen,
(Warhurst), Jensen, Passi, Gardner,
Gudjohnsen, Hansen, (Holdsworth).
Subs not used: Taylor, Holden,
CHATTING WITH WANDERERS SUPPORTERS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES OF
SUPPORTING THE CLUB SINCE THE MOVE TO OUR CURRENT HOME IN 1997.
GEORGE BROWN
AGE: 28
FROM: BOLTON
First game you attended at the
current stadium?
I’m fairly sure it was against
Newcastle during the 03/04
season, Henrik Pedersen’s
ridiculous lob past Shay Given
forever sticks in my memory.
It was nowhere near as plainsailing
as that in my early
Wanderers watching days at the
Reebok however. The next two
home games I went to that season
were defeats against Manchester
City and Fulham!
Last game you attended at the
current stadium?
The Carabao Cup clash against
Premier League Aston Villa was a
brilliant atmosphere and genuine
pleasure to be part of the crowd
watching.
When Dion Charles opened the
scoring I haven’t heard the stadium
like that in years! Limbs like those
were rivalled only by Sir Aaron of
Wilbraham’s goal against Forest
in 2017.
Best opposition player you’ve
seen play at the stadium?
A performance that sticks in my
mind was when Wayne Rooney
scored a hat-trick against us in a
4-0 win for United on his birthday
in 2006. We were possibly in our
Premier League.
Bruno
N’GOTTY
Hard as nails.
Big Sam era peak then and they
completely tore us apart!
In terms of stealing the show
against us, Frank Lampard’s double
for Chelsea for them to secure
their first Premier League title in
2005 remains an iconic moment
that happened right in front of our
very eyes.
Best atmosphere you’ve ever
experienced at the stadium?
Beating Lokomotiv Plovdiv 2-1 in
our first ever UEFA Cup game in
05/06 was special. I knew how
special it was for our club to be
playing in Europe and I couldn’t
believe we’d finally got there.
Pretty sure I cried when Jared
Borgetti smashed in the winner!
As mentioned, you’ll do better to
find a more manic 10 minutes than
those against Forest in 2018. I’ll
be honest, I barely remembering
celebrating Wheater’s equaliser
because I was convinced we’d
blown it. Next thing you know,
he didn’t get an
England call-up.
Nicolas
ANELKA
Slightly out of position,
but how can you not
have his goals?!
Alfie crosses it into the path
of Wilby’s head and the roof is
absolutely blown off the Macron
and everyone around you has
completely lost their mind in
unbridled joy!
The best set of away fans you’ve
seen at the stadium?
Probably when Chelsea won the
league at our place in 04/05. We
lost so don’t need to go into any
more detail there.
Best match you’ve attended at
the stadium?
Beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in
07/08. The ground was rocking!
Nicest home kit Bolton have worn
since 1997?
For sheer nostalgia it has to be the
03-05 home kit. All those legends
in all-white. T’Galaticos!
The best goal you’ve witnessed in
person at the stadium?
Anelka’s rocket against Arsenal
when we beat them 3-1 in 06/07.
Jens Lehmann had no chance.
ABOUT THE TRUST
JOIN THE TRUST
NEWS FROM THE
BWFCST
What a momentous occasion it
was at the University of Bolton
Stadium for our last home
league game – apart from the
result that is!! The Supporters’
Trust was delighted to present a
commemorative trophy to Barbara
and her family in recognition of
all her husband, the late, great
Dave “Ding Dong Do” Higson
did for Bolton Wanderers. Dave’s
devotion to the Wanderers was
unparalleled and he worked
tirelessly to support the club in so
many ways. He was adored by our
fans and we thought it only fitting
that we showed our appreciation
by remembering his huge
contribution with this award.
Barbara and the family officially
opened the new Fanzone Bar
named in Dave’s honour and were
then entertained by Sharon Brittan
in the Chairman’s Suite. As the club
has changed immeasurably and
moved forward into a new era over
the last three years, it is to their
credit that the Board acted on the
BWFCST suggestion and honoured
our past by immortalising the great
man and ensuring that a big part of
Wanderers’ folklore lives on.
On the same evening, there was
also a milestone to honour as
the legend that is Jack Dearden
celebrated his 70th birthday in the
Reflections Suite. Jack is a great
friend of the Supporters’ Trust and
has given us huge support since
that very first meeting back in 2016.
Jack is synonymous with Bolton
Wanderers and his commentary
for BBC Radio Manchester has
provided many years of excellent
coverage of our games. His
unmistakable voice has been
the soundtrack for many iconic
moments in our history, through
both the highs and the lows. Happy
birthday Jack. We salute you!
Today’s game also features
the work of #HerGameToo,
another of our trust affiliates.
We will be featuring Emily and
her team in future weeks, but
if you would like to know more
about #HerGameToo visit www.
B TEAM AND ACADEMY
Eoin Toal completed his first 45 minutes for
Wanderers as a strong Blackpool side came from
behind to win at Bamber Bridge.
Summer signing Toal stepped up his match fitness
after recovering from injury and played the first half
of the Central League game.
Josh Sheehan and Lloyd Isgrove also got more
valuable game time into their legs, with the duo
playing for 75 minutes to edge nearer a first-team
return.
Isgrove went close to a stunning goal as he
crashed a first-time volley from a corner against
the crossbar as the Whites went close to doubling
their early lead.
Conor Carty had made it two goals in two games
as the striker followed up his winner at Fleetwood
in the Whites’ opening game with another cool
finish after running onto a Sheehan through-ball
just five minutes in.
Wanderers’ lead lasted until five minutes before
the break when the Seasiders – containing a
number of first-team players – levelled from the
penalty spot through Beryly Lubala.
Blackpool then went ahead when CJ Hamilton –
with three Championship appearances under his
belt this season – fired past the impressive Luke
Hutchinson after 65 minutes.
And the home side hung onto all three points after
Wanderers’ substitute Matthew Tweedley was
denied by Stuart Moore’s fine save.
Wanderers: Hutchinson, Khumbeni (Tweedley
75), Toal (Tutte HT), Sackey, Sheehan (Pettifer 75),
Isgrove (Conway 75), Carty, Toure, Sithole, Stanley
(Lockett HT), Senior.
The Under-18s have enjoyed an unbeaten start to
the 2022/23 season. Julian Darby’s side began
the campaign with a 3-2 win at Grimsby Town
in the Youth Alliance Cup, with Joel Burgess (2)
and Abdul Kamara finding the net in a come from
behind victory.
The young Whites began their league campaign
with a 1-1 draw against Oldham Athletic at Lostock.
After falling behind, Noah Halford scored an 89th
minute equaliser to rescue a deserved point.
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
