Yoga Retreat

spirit & Nature dancing together

welcoMe to yogAFest!

It is our deep joy to come together as a community for this

sacred celebration of Spirit and Nature Dancing Together!

YogAFest is...

A Celebration of Yoga in America

The diversity of offerings and presenters gives us a greater

appreciation for the various yogic paths that are available in

the West. Whichever path we may be on, true yoga is always

leading our soul to union with the Divine.

Community in Nature

We are all about community and that’s why we love to host this

gathering. It all takes place on this pristine land, reminding us

of the beauty of Mother Earth and our responsibility to care for

her.

A Joyful Heart of Service

The yoga of selfless service (karma yoga) is the lifeblood of our

spiritual community. YogaFest relies on the help of friends and

volunteers, and encourages participation from all who attend.

YogaFest truly is what we make it—together!

About Song of the Morning

Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat welcomes you to its 800 acres of

forest, meadow and stream. We welcome you into a community of

truth seekers who honor you, the path you follow, and the humanity

we all share and represent.

Song of the Morning was founded in 1970 by Yogacharya J. Oliver

Black at the request of his great master, Paramahansa Yogananda,

who came to the West to bring the science of Yoga in all its depth

and breadth. Truth, or God, is knowable; yoga is what brings that

statement into practical reality, as Self-realization.

Learn more about us, visit us on retreat, and get involved by going

to songofthemorning.org.

Living in Divine HarmonY

The theme of this year’s YogaFest expresses our intention to offer

programs that create divine harmony on the physical, mentalemotional,

and spiritual levels of being.

This harmony will expand outward into our relationships —with

friends and family, with our spiritual community, and with society

and our world. The goal — and the proof — of divine harmony is the

expression of love and wisdom that is felt by others around us. Those

who are committed to a spiritual life have the responsibility to create

inner harmony and manifest divine harmony in outer relationships

and in society.

Panel Conversation: Spiritual Support & Community

In tandem with our festival theme, we’ve invited five dynamic

and experienced leaders of different communities onto

a panel to share practical ways we all can receive from

and contribute to different forms of spiritual support and

community. This discussion will be in two parts, Friday at 2:30

pm and Saturday at 3 pm in the Main Tent.

Featuring: Swami Sankarananda, Deva Madhava Das,

Carol Malnor, Kevin James Karas, & Carol Armour

THings to Know

Have questions? Need first aid? Can’t find a program? Visit the

YogaFest Info Tent (see map center spread). We are here to help!

Helpful Tips

• If in doubt, bring your yoga mat!

• Bring your water bottle and stay hydrated! Refill your bottle at

the central drinking water station in the Dining Area.

• Bring a flashlight to the evening programs so you can find your

way back to your campsite in the dark.

• Warm water showers are a short walk away at our shower

pavilion next to the organic garden (see map center spread).

FestiVal Rules

• NO drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. Please respect our Yogic tradition of

family-friendly community values.

• NO campfires. Small cook stoves are fine, but please be mindful of

them at all times.

• NO generators.

• NO driving through the central festival grounds. After your campsite is

set-up, we ask that you park your vehicle and leave it parked until it is

time to leave. If you will be coming and going for any reason, we ask

you to park on the community roads before you get to the main festival

grounds for safety, organization, and in order to maintain a serene

atmosphere.

• Please DO NOT enter the Mainhouse or other buildings you are not

staying in during the festival.

• Campers - please only use the porta-johns throughout the festival

grounds, and not the indoor bathrooms which are reserved for guests

who have paid for indoor accommodations.

• Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out! If it came with you, it should leave with you,

including trash.

About Harmony Collective:

The Harmony Collective is a community

centered around the practice of Krsna Bhakti

as taught by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Established

in 2014, the project has since grown from one community center in

downtown Ypsilanti to two ashrams, a restaurant, and a 10 acre farm

outside the city. A special emphasis is placed on Sankirtan — the

communal singing of God’s names — as a uniquely powerful way to

cleanse hearts and deepen relationships with each other and Krsna.

Sustainability at YogAfest

Thank you for supporting Song of the Morning’s sustainability goals!

At YogaFest — and year-round — we try to decrease our waste as

much as possible, and here’s how you can help:

• Recycle what you can

• Follow “pack-it-in, pack-it-out” principles by taking your trash with

you when you leave

• Put all food scraps in the labeled compost bins for use in our garden

Garden Seva Opportunity

Join our Co-Manager and Garden Lead Justine Markey in our organic

garden to connect with nature, get your hands in the soil, and help Song of

the Morning in its efforts of sustainability and self-suffiency as we grow our

own food each season! All are welcome to come for any amount of

time Friday between 9:30 - 11 am in the Garden.

a spiritual home for thousands of devotees who live all over

North America. Golden Lotus, Inc. and Song of the Morning

were founded by Yogacharya J. Oliver Black in order to carry

by our Golden Lotus Tent to learn more!

• See our brand new photo displays that tell the story of who

we are.

• Meet our local residents, many who have longtime ties with

our rich history.

• Looking for a place to call home? Ask about our Clear

Light Community!

practice to start our days off with devotion, including prayer, chanting,

meditation and affirmations. This is a beginner-friendly program!

Song of the Morning Devotional Meditation Service

The spiritual heart of Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat is this nightly

service which includes prayer, the devotional music of Paramahansa

Yogananda’s Cosmic Chants, meditation, a brief healing service, and

a lengthy period of silence to saturate in stillness and sacred presence.

Led by Clear Light Community members in the Meditation Tent Friday

Matri MandiR

Next to the river we have consecrated a sacred space for Divine

Mother in Her form of Kali, where we invite you to come anytime for

darshan, a moment of prayer, meditation, mantra japa and chanting

—just come to feel Mother’s loving presence.

““What lightning flash Glimmers in Thy face, O Mother!””

~ From a devotional song by Paramahansa Yogananda

Altar: Paramahansa Yogananda worshiped this image

of Kali as a youth in India, and privately throughout

his life in America. Divine Mother Kali is all-pervading,

unconditional love and the creative force (Shakti) of all

creation. She is the protective power of transformation

that liberates the soul from ego-induced ignorance. Her

“color” is eternity, dark like the infinite sky. Devotees also

approach Her with childlike love, for She is our Mother.

Yajna - Sacred Fire Ceremony:

All are welcome — even for a short time — to make an offering into the

sacred fire and to pray and meditate. Beneath the starlit sky, in the temple

of trees — in Nature’s temple — the Vedic homa (yajna) has been practiced

since ancient times in India. It creates a sacred presence on the altar of

fire. It will bless the land of Song of the Morning and the vision of its founder

and Guru.

Location: Held at the homa kund (fire altar) up the hill from the Dining Area

(see map center spread), Friday from 8:45 - 10:15 pm

Shrine Trails

Traverse the 800 acres of Song of the Morning by walking our meditative

shrine trails. These fairly short and easy hikes offer ample exposure to

beautiful forested land that surrounds the YogaFest grounds. See the Festival

Map to find where most of our trails start.

Swimming

Take a dip in the Pigeon River, a shallow river that offers good opportunity to

wade and splash around, but please do so downstream of the main bridge

and be aware of the current, which can be unexpectedly swift. We hope you

enjoy the beautiful Pigeon River while you are here, but please understand

that doing so is at your own risk!

River Restoration

If you noticed the construction site upstream of the main

bridge as you came in and wondered what it is all about:

it is a major grant-funded project to restore the Pigeon

River to its original glory following over 100 years of river

damming. The dam - which was located where the main

bridge is now - was removed in 2014. The goal of this project

is to stabilize the river, bringing it to a single channel that

flows optimally under the bridge, while also creating and

protecting environmentally friendly wetland habitats.

It is a short term disruption (with most major work to be

completed by winter) which will usher in an exciting new

chapter of ecological stewardship far, far into the future.

For shorter stays, our karma yoga work exchange program is a

wonderful way to experience Ranch life by offering service for a

month or more in exchange for room, board, and delicious vegetarian

meals.

Upcoming Retreats

It’s not too late to join us for these upcoming public retreats:

Silent Retreat with Swami Sankarananda

We are blessed to welcome Swami Sankarananda not only for YogaFest,

but also returning to lead a powerful week-long retreat in August!

This will be a deep immersive experience into Yoga via a week of

meditation, chanting, yoga asana, and introspection, all in an attitude

and atmosphere of silence. Dates: Aug. 20-27 (with a weekend option

Aug. 20-22); Cost: Donation Based.

Yogacharya’s Birthday Weekend Celebration

Each year we celebrate our founder’s birthday by hosting a weekend

program for all who wish to learn more about Song of the Morning!

It’s a perfect time to connect with our community, soak in the land

through a facilitated hike, and learn about the vision for the Pigeon

River Restoration project that is underway. The weekend concludes

with a birthday celebration where inspiring and astonishing stories of

Yogacharya and Song of the Morning’s impact on people’s lives are

shared. Dates: Sept. 4-5; Cost: No program fee. Lodging & meal rates

are available on our website.
