Welcome to J’AIME
Ok hands up; who found themselves complaining about
last month’s 30-degree heatwave? Well now, as the
autumn months are most definitely upon us, I’m sure I’m
not the only one regretting wishing the summer weather
away! Never fear; just take a quick look at this month’s
interiors pages for a little inspiration on bringing that
sunshine feeling into your homes, all year round.
Aussie soap fans were left in tears when teatime favourite
Neighbours aired its final episode this summer. But
if you’re missing your Ramsey Street fix there’s good
news; soap legend Alan Fletcher, better known as Dr
Karl Kennedy, will be gracing the stage at the Lichfield
Garrick this month to dish the dirt on soap life on his
The Doctor Will See You Now tour. We caught up with
him ahead of his visit, which is a must for all Neighbours
fans.
We also take a look at a brand new show from an
emerging Lichfield theatre company, as well as a
celebratory exhibition from a Shenstone artist - so there’s
lots to keep you entertained.
We’ve got a great competition for you this month too;
we’ve teamed up with Midlands perfumer Freddie
Albrighton to offer readers the chance to win a bottle
of one of his unique scents worth £102 - will it be the
tantalisingly sweet Boys, the addictive Last Minute
Change of Heart, or something else? Two runners-up
will also win a full sample set so they can try Freddie’s
whole collection for themselves.
With our usual mix of fashion and beauty, features and
entertainment, we hope you find plenty to get stuck into
this month.
If you enjoy what you read in this issue, then why not
Unique scents from a
Midlands perfumer
FREDDIE ALBRIGHTON PERFUME IS A PRESTIGIOUS, QUIRKY AND ALTERNATIVE BRAND
WHERE FRAGRANCES ARE HAND-CRAFTED BY OWNER FREDDIE. HIS FLAGSHIP STORE,
LOCATED IN STOURBRIDGE, IS USED AS A CREATIVE SPACE AND A PLACE TO LEARN THE
CRAFTSMANSHIP OF FRAGRANCE. KEYLEIGH FREEMAN DISCOVERS MORE - AND ONE
LUCKY READER WILL WIN A BOTTLE OF PERFUME OF THEIR CHOICE
Working as a tattoo artist for several years, Freddie
Albrighton has a passion for letting his creativity
shine - which he now does through creating
delectable scents. His perfumes are unique to
his personal life experiences and emotions; as he
explains, he literally captures his moments in a bottle.
Freddie said: “I am an independent perfumer and
tattoo artist who launched this line after lockdown
- needing something creative to keep me occupied
during COVID lockdowns. I’ve been a tattoo artist
for almost 10 years, and into perfumery for longer.
“My interest in perfume-making began years back
when studying non-tangible art works, sound, light,
smell - in a gallery/installation setting. It led me to
become fascinated with fragrance materials, aroma
chemicals and the construction of perfume accords.
“Having loved fragrance, and specifically vintage
and avante garde perfumery, since my teenage years
I’ve finally launched my own line, focused around
concepts of nostalgia, family and comfort. Each
perfume in the collection has familiarity, inspirations
from life, love, travel, moments in time.
“We have stockists all over Europe but this flagship
store is the only UK stockist where everything is
designed, compounded, hand-poured and labelled
in-house. We are open on Saturdays only, as the rest
of the time I tattoo from here as a gorgeous private
studio.
“There is somewhat a crossover with perfume and
tattooing - both allow me to play with colour, texture,
and similar subject matters from fantasy to nature.”
Freddie added: “In both mediums, the final artwork
is worn by someone else - and although perfume is
short lived compared to a tattoo, in a way the bottle
can be kept for years or forever depending how often
you wear it, so both are a keepsake.”
Freddie has a variation of fragrances
on his website; one being inspired by
his mother, Bernadette. It was the first
perfume he created and he called it
Bernadette Margaret Evelyn Theresa.
Freddie remembers his mum wearing
Opium and other similar scents and he
references the spicy amber and powdery
florals of 80s perfume, while hinting
at those vintage fragrances and also
remaining contemporary and familiar.
He describes the scent as an 80s-inspired
spicy floral, carnations, frangipani,
apricot on a 70s nostalgic patchouli. It’s
a sepia toned comfort - warm and full of
love, just like his mother.
Freddie said: “It begins with a bright
blood orange and apricot amongst
clove, nutmeg and cinnamon spices -
softened with florals of carnation and
frangipani - which have a dusty warmth.
The difference here is the base - as the
fragrance sits on a heady, 70s punk
patchouli, but made translucent and
radiant.
“My mom was a punk back in her
teenage years and even when I was
growing up she would hunt out any
fragrance with patchouli.
“The overall effect is a warm, spiced, nostalgic cloud
of warmth that smells both vintage inspired, but
contemporary at the same time. It’s an every-day
wear for me, and of course like all the others, unisex
- if you identify as male please don’t be put off by the
name it smells amazing on everyone!
“It’s a love letter to both my mom, and perfumes of
the past - a hug in a bottle.”
From beautifully designed shop
windows and many ‘works in
progress’ to smell, if you’re a
perfume enthusiast or just want
a cool place to visit, you can stop
by Freddie Albrighton Perfume
to gain a greater understanding
of how to ‘read’ perfume within
the shop using Freddie’s cabinet
full of rare materials.
Freddie added: “Perfume these
days is marketed as merely a
commercial product to smell
good - but it can be so much
more - it is art. It is meticulously
designed, a balance of
creativity and chemistry and the
possibilities are endless. So smell
different - and unique.”
THE PERFUMES
Freddie’s fragrances all have compelling and
emotional names and feature mouth-watering
descriptions - they almost sound edible!
Boys: A pink fuzz of raspberry, cream soda and
parma violet dust paired with earthy black leather
and squeaky latex. Boys settles as sweet and powdery
with a rougher punk edge, a 90s white musk and a
memory of the night before. It’s high camp, flirty
and naive.
Mabel’s Tooth: Honeyed cereal and bitter coffee
remnants, burnt toffee and fruity tobacco sit on
vanillic dried woods and a hint of spiced leather. A
study in bronze and gold, bitter sweet.
11 Candles In Antwerpen: A classical white
orchid bouquet, spiked with pink pepper, melts into
a bed of dense, creamy candle wax and myrrh. A
memory, a soft focused, glowing light - minimal,
radiant, aery.
Last Minute Change Of Heart: A fully rounded,
chewy balloon of bubblegum, transitioning to
a skin scent of cashmere, spiced cedar, biscuit-y
sandalwood and musk. A dry, woody, sweet, everyday
fragrance. Addictive.
Freddie is launching a new fragrance in September
called Someone Else’s Flowers; the perfume
features bitter greens, radish and watercress - wet
vegetal notes and flower shop air. Chrysanthemums
and hyacinths on a vintage inspired mossy base
create a scent which is classical but contemporary.
Freddie Albrighton Perfume is open Saturdays from
9.30am-5.30pm, located at 14 Victoria Passage,
Stourbridge. For more details visit
NEIGHBOURS STAR ALAN FLETCHER IS COMING TO THE LICHFIELD GARRICK FOR AN
INTIMATE LIVE SHOW THIS MONTH TO LOOK BACK ON HIS 28 YEARS AS RAMSAY STREET’S
MOST FAMOUS DOCTOR, KARL KENNEDY. AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS MORE
Some three million UK viewers tuned in as Aussie
teatime favourite Neighbours bowed out after nearly
four decades on air this summer. The sunshine soap
catapulted many of its young stars to international
fame, and household names including Kylie
Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Natalie
Imbruglia and Guy Pearce all reunited for one last
hurrah on Ramsey Street.
Throughout the years of drama, crisis and plenty
of good times - the 1987 wedding of Scott and
Charlene is still one of the most talked-about and
best-loved television weddings of all time - one man
has been a consistent presence. With some 28 years
under his belt, Alan Fletcher’s Dr Karl Kennedy was
the soap’s longest-running continuously-appearing
character, arriving on the street in 1994 with wife
Susan and kids Mal, Billy and Libby in tow, and
staying the course until the curtain came down on
the show.
And this month, Alan will be sharing an exclusive
look behind the Neighbours scenes as his solo tour,
The Doctor Will See You Now, travels around
the UK, stopping off in Lichfield at the Garrick
on September 16. With the aid of video footage
and music from Neighbours, The Doctor Will See
You Now is an interview-style show, which will
undoubtedly go off-script, that will look back on
Alan’s time on the show, along with insights into his
life and career.
“I have appeared in hundreds of theatrical
performances in my 43 years as an actor, but this is
the first time I will lay myself bare for an audience. I
want to give fans a frank and truthful insight into my
life on Neighbours in an entertaining and fun way,”
says Alan.
“Using video, music and an interview style format
the show is a fun and reverential review of the trials
and tribulations of Dr Karl Kennedy’s professional
and personal life!
“Originally the show was designed as a celebration
of my 25 years on Neighbours and was planned to
coincide with the 35th anniversary of Neighbours.
Sadly, COVID ruined those plans but I was
determined to bring the show to fruition in the UK
and, finally, we are up and running.”
With almost three decades on Neighbours under his
belt, Alan has been involved in some huge storylines,
from marriages and divorces, to affairs and amnesia,
to health scares and medical emergencies. So
LIVE SHOW TO THE LICHFIELD
GARRICK THIS MONTH. PHOTO
COURTESY OF CHANNEL 5
deciding what to feature in the show has been a
mammoth task.
“There have been so many twists and turns in Karl’s
life that it was almost impossible to choose which
ones to highlight,” Alan says. “So I have gone for
a thematic approach. The show is segmented into
topics such as Makeups and Breakups, Sex, Medical
matters, Nudity and Disasters.”
Outside of his work on Neighbours, Alan has graced
theatre stages across Australia and the UK in a huge
variety of roles, from serious drama to panto stints.
He also shares Karl Kennedy’s passion for music,
and has fronted the band Waiting Room since 2004,
touring the UK some 12 times over ten years to sellout
crowds.
“The show is designed to inform the audience about
my entire career on stage, television, film and in
music although the main focus is on Neighbours,”
says Alan. “And there will definitely be a few songs! I
intend to honour Susan Kennedy in song!”
As well as Karl Kennedy, the other major constant
in Alan’s life is his wife, newsreader Jennifer Hansen,
who will be joining him on the show.
“Jen is my interviewer and she also fills the role
of cheeky critic,” Alan says. “We have enjoyed 32
years of happy marriage and this allows us to enjoy
bouncing off each other and gently ribbing each
other for the audience’s enjoyment.”
The performance will also offer a Q&A segment
to allow the audience to grill Alan themselves with
the questions they have always wanted to know the
answer to, and there will also be a limited number of
meet and greet tickets available.
“Interacting with fans has always been the focus of
my time on Neighbours,” says Alan. “I have had the
pleasure of meeting thousands of fans through my
music tours, publicity tours and panto appearances.
Also, my 15 years as a regular at the Neighbours
Night was a brilliant opportunity to meet hundreds
of fans a week. Through my website I have had
direct and close contact with thousands of fans.
“Basically the Neighbours audience kept the show on
air for 37 years and kept me in a job for 28 years so
I am deeply grateful for the support I have received
and I always try to repay the loyalty of fans.”
The Doctor Will See You Now will be heading to the
Lichfield Garrick on Friday, September 16. Further
Building an award-winning team
SUTTON COLDFIELD-BASED ESTATE AGENCY CHOSEN HOME IS SET TO MARK ITS
SECOND ANNIVERSARY IN A MATTER OF WEEKS, AND HAS WELCOMED TWO FAMILIAR
NEW FACES TO ITS TEAM TO HELP IT MOVE INTO ITS THIRD YEAR
No longer the ‘new kid on the block’,
Chosen Home, which was founded in
September 2020, has grown from a
four-strong team with big ambitions
and just one property to market to
an award-winning team of 12 - and
the fact that it recently listed its 100th
property, a £3.75million farm on the
exclusive Little Aston Estate, shows just
how far it has come.
Director Nicki Ash said: “We know
people thought we were mad back
then, launching an estate agency in
such a well-represented area; never
mind in the middle of a pandemic!
“Fortunately, we love a challenge
and we’ve never looked back. Having successfully
launched our ‘we sell your home for free’ model
throughout Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham and
Worcestershire, we’ve built up a strong reputation
for delivering first-class customer service, providing
accurate market intelligence and advice, and
putting together outstanding marketing packages
to sell properties throughout the region for the best
possible price, while picking up industry awards and
consistent five-star TrustPilot reviews along the way,”
she said.
Now just a matter of weeks from its second
anniversary, the past month has seen Chosen Home
make big advances, expanding its sales team further
with the appointments of Christopher Stuart and
Lisa Freer, both of whom are well-known and
respected within the Midlands.
Christopher, who formerly operated his own
estate agency, brings years of retail and property
experience within the Sutton Coldfield
area, while Lisa joins the business from
Fine & Country, bringing years of
experience in selling Midlands property
and joining her former colleague
Gemma Hemming, who became one of
the Chosen Few in May.
And that’s not all. “We have big plans
for the remainder of 2022,” said
Nicki, “with an ongoing recruitment
campaign and our expansion into the
wider Midlands this autumn. We’ve
been overwhelmed by the response
to Chosen Home so far, so with an
extended team now in place, it’s time
to branch out and introduce ourselves
further afield!”
Gold dust
AS arguably the most optimistic shade on the colour
spectrum, yellow is always a popular choice. From juicy
lemon to bold canary, these vibrant hues are perfect for
injecting a touch of sunshine into your everyday.
Now, as we tumble into the cooler months, it’s time for
those warmer yellows to make their mark. Rich hues of
honey and amber, fiery mustard and dazzling gold tones
make for a perfect antidote to those autumnal chills.
Go big with swathes of yellow across walls for an instant
mood lift; it’s impossible to feel dreary when surrounded
by such radiant tones. Statement furniture items also look
incredible in bright yellow hues; a velvet mustard sofa just
screams ‘relax in style’, while switching up your dining
space with golden-hued seating will help to spark joy at
mealtimes. Add a yellow rug, too, to add definition to
your space.
Carefully chosen accessories help to maximise impact;
layer up shades of gold, mustard, ochre and more
throughout your room to keep that sunny day feeling all
year round.
Let there
be light
WITH autumn proper soon upon us, meaning the nights
drawing in, it’s the time of year when lighting becomes
one of the most important aspects of interior design.
But far from being a solely practical addition to our
homes, lighting is increasingly becoming a style statement
all of its own. Lighting has the ability to completely
change not only the look, but the feel, of a space, making
it an essential component of any decor scheme.
For 2022, there has been a move towards creating a
statement with your lighting; from artful ceiling pendants
and elaborate chandeliers, to sculptural lamps which blur
the lines between functional and art, it’s time for your
lighting choices to take centre stage.
As the darker evenings begin, you need to look at different
ways to light those corners of the room which have
become reliant on lingering sunlight. Strategically placed
lamps - both floor and table - work in harmony with
carefully crafted ceiling fittings to bounce light around the
room and create an inviting, cosy feel into autumn and
beyond.
F E AT U R E
Not only school time,
but me time
AFTER THE CHAOS OF THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS, IT’S NICE TO BE ABLE TO CARVE OUT A
LITTLE ‘ME TIME’. JASPREET SHERGILL HAS SOME TOP TIPS FOR TAKING TIME TO RELAX
Ironing uniforms, packing lunches and going through
homework, sounds all a little familiar right? After
we return back to the busy school schedule, it’s still
important to make sure you’re not forgetting about
yourself and getting in that very much needed ‘me
time’. So here are our top things you can do, all
from home, to help you relax and unwind before the
alarm goes off for the school run.
NEOM CANDLE
Candles can do so much, they bring a warm light,
set the mood and fill the room with a beautiful scent.
Try out the Happiness Scented candle from NEOM
Organics, made with a burn time of 35 hours. Let
the refreshing fragrance of white neroli, mimosa
and lemon clear the mind and balance emotions.
The NEOM range is
made from a blend of
natural vegetable wax,
pure essential oils and
completely free from
toxins. Perfect for
any evening in, so sit
back, put your feet up
and let all its natural
goodness help you
unwind.
THE BOTTLED BAKING CO
There isn’t much that can beat a little sweet treat in
the evening. Now picture this – fresh, warm, gooey
cookies, straight from the oven. The Bottled Baking
Co. have an easy, mess-free Seriously Smart Cookies
Kit, all you have to do is add an egg and butter and
voila, deliciously sweet cookies ready to devour.
These also make a great after-school activity for
the kids to get involved with but if you’re not quite
feeling in the sharing mood, it’s okay we won’t tell
anyone…
COCKTAIL PARTY HAT BOX
Who said you can’t have a tipple on a school-night?!
This cocktail and nibble kit from Harvey Nichols, is
the ultimate weekday treat, with fuss-free, bar-quality,
single-serving classic cocktails and snacks alongside,
there isn’t much that can go wrong. To enhance the
evening, we recommend putting on a film such as
a classic James Bond which is quite fitting, you just
can’t say no to a bit of 007. This box also makes a
great gift or night in with friends – we’ll have ours
shaken not stirred, thanks!
OUAI CHILL PILLS BATH BOMBS
An oldie but a goodie, taking a bath has been around
for centuries and is known to relax the mind and
body, there really is nothing like it. So, to add that
extra bit of bliss to your ‘me time’ try the OUAI
Chill Pills bath bombs, made with softening jojoba
seed oil, hemp seed oil which helps to regenerate
your skins protective
layer and safflower oil
to lock in the moisture.
Just in case that wasn’t
enough, they are rose
and jasmine scented,
they’ll get you feeling
chilled in no time -
exactly what they say
on the tin.
CALM BOOK
Reading makes a lovely wind-down activity and
if reading books isn’t your usual thing, it will be
after this! The Calm book by Michael Acton Smith
gives great advice on how to reduce stress, be in the
moment and manoeuvre in what sometimes can be a
rather chaotic life. The beautiful presentation alone
instantly calms you as soon as you pick it up. Before
bed or waiting for the dinner to cook, ten minutes of
this little book of goodness can do wonders.
DECLUTTER
You have to try it before you knock it, trust us on
this one! Decluttering the spare-room, the random
drawer that seems to have everything in or clearing
out the cupboard under the stairs. Sometimes it can
feel like there is so much to do but if you tackle one
drawer at a time, put some light music on in the
background or your favourite podcast, you would
have blasted through it all by the end of the week
– and it’ll feel great! Getting rid of excess stuff can
make you feel calmer, happier, and more in control
so a tidier space can make for a more relaxed mind.
COLOURING
Colouring isn’t just for kids! Adult colouring books
are a thing too! Let your creativity flow and relax for
the day. We love The Mindfulness Colouring Book
by Emma Farrarons for its pocket-sized pictures
depicting soothing waves and geometric patterns.
This also makes a great wind-down activity to do
with the kids after dinner or before bed.
THE MAN BEHIND TWO OF BIRMINGHAM’S MOST FORWARD-THINKING COCKTAIL EXPERIENCES,
ROBERT WOOD, OPENS HIS NEW VENTURE ATELIER, A CREATIVE DRINKS STUDIO AND COCKTAIL
BAR, IN THE CITY’S JEWELLERY QUARTER THIS MONTH. AMY NORBURY GOT THE LOWDOWN
FROM THE AWARD-WINNING DRINKS CREATOR AHEAD OF THE LAUNCH
Housed in a restored factory in Newhall Square,
Atelier is a bar as singular as its guardian. Like a
true atelier, the space will be a workshop that offers
complete creative freedom, allowing Robert to
express his ever-changing interests and ideas through
drinks. Open for just a few nights a week for a
handful of guests each evening, and with each menu
available for a limited time only, guests can expect a
constantly evolving experience.
Where have you drawn inspiration for the
bar and experience from?
My almost 20 years in the cocktail world have
brought me to this point. Both Smultronstalle and
18/81 (my previous bars) are direct inspiration points
- our former fans will find much that is familiar - but
Atelier will take things a step further.
Each menu is available for just a short time (around
eight to 12 weeks) and will be a laser-focused
expression of my current creative interests. The first,
‘Terroir’, is a celebration of the native pantry of
the British Isles. It will be available from September
22 to November 12, after which I will completely
reinvent the menu, starting afresh with the freedom
to create entirely new drinks around whatever
inspiration next strikes me.
My direct influences in the food and drink world are
Gen Yamamoto, Luke Whearty, Doug McMaster
and Ryan Chetiyawardana.
How important is the Jewellery Quarter
location, and the building itself, to the
overall concept?
The JQ is super important to our plans. Our building
has tons of history - it dates back to 1838 and is the
former home of one of the city’s most important
manufactories, Elkington Mason & Co. We have
allowed the natural charisma of the building to be
part of the process and it’s played a part in directing
the design. The concept has definitely been shaped
by the building and the Jewellery Quarter itself,
the historic home of many of Birmingham’s finest
designers, makers, workshops and studios.
30 www.jaimemagazine.com
How long has Atelier been in the pipeline?
We viewed and fell in love with the building over two
years ago. It’s been a long road to this point and we
can’t wait to share the space with our guests.
Tell us about the wider team behind Atelier?
Kyndra (my long-term professional partner and
fiancée) and I will be your hosts, but we have an
entire team of people who have made Atelier
happen. Alex Claridge, my friend and long-term
collaborator, has been a huge support behind-thescenes,
and we’re lucky to have a team of creatives
that really share our vision and have helped bring it
to life.
Tell us about the first menu, Terroir? What
sort of thing can guests expect?
‘Terroir’ is a celebration of the native pantry
of the British Isles. There will be three ‘Terroir’
experiences to explore, a seven-course cocktail tasting
experience that takes guests on a journey across the
UK celebrating a plethora of landscapes and their
esoteric flavours and ingredients, house cocktails
from the a la carte menu, and a four-course tasting
menu that offers a concise, but tailored experience
that reflects British seasonal changes.
Do you have any particular favourite
ingredients to use?
I really love introducing new flavours to people. It
brings a sense of intrigue rather than expectation.
Whether that be acorn or sandalwood or even
bamboo, new experiences seldom come along for
foodies, so I take it very seriously.
Will there be any ingredients which guests
might find unusual?
Every single drink should have something familiar
and something unusual about it. ‘Terroir’ will really
test people’s dependence on overused flavours like
ROBERT HAS ALSO
passionfruit and strawberry. Instead, we want to
show people awesome flavours like gorse flower,
birch, meadowsweet, sea buckthorn, quince and oak
moss.
How has your passion for drinks creation
and cocktails developed over the years?
20 years of cocktail making has culminated in
what I hope is a hybridity of approachability and
iconoclasm. I want to change the way people
think about cocktails, and offer them flavours and
experiences that push the boundaries. However, the
experience has to be inviting and welcoming - the
success of experimentation only comes from building
trust with your guests, bringing them on the journey.
What are your main influences when it comes
to constructing a new drinks experience?
Fine dining restaurants, 100%. Kyndra and I eat all
over the world and we take a lot of inspiration from
restaurant culture and those experiences.
Reservations are now open for the first Atelier
menu, ‘Terroir’, which runs from September 22
to November 12, and can be made at
just 26 guests and is open Thursday to Saturday,
with advance booking highly recommended.
A celebratory exhibition
A SHENSTONE ARTIST IS CELEBRATING A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY WITH A FANTASTIC
EXHIBITION OF LANDSCAPE AND ARCHITECTURALLY-INSPIRED PAINTINGS RUNNING
THROUGHOUT OCTOBER AT SHENSTONE COMMUNITY LIBRARY
Since he was a young man, Dennis Harper
hasn’t stopped painting. From picturesque
Sutton Park to the majesty of the Lake
District, tranquil Cannock Chase to
the wilds of Cornwall, he has travelled
around the UK and beyond, capturing the
landscapes of our fair isles in oils on canvas.
And now, to celebrate his milestone
80th birthday, Dennis will be holding an
exhibition of some 40 of his newest works
in the gallery at Shenstone Community
Library.
Dennis says: “Albeit late due to Covid,
I am celebrating my 80th birthday with
an exhibition of my paintings. Do come
along, enjoy a glass of wine and chat while
viewing my new work, considered to be
some of my best yet.”
The exhibition will also help to support the
Shenstone 1st Scouts group, of which three
members have been chosen to represent
Staffordshire at the World Scouts Jamboree
in South Korea in 2023. Dennis has chosen
a painting to donate to the cause, with
proceeds from its sale going towards the
£4,100 fundraising target each of the three chosen
scouts has to achieve. Any additional donations
from visitors to the exhibition will also be gratefully
received.
Having first picked up a paintbrush as a youngster,
Dennis moved from watercolours to oils at the age
of 19, working hard to master the thicker medium
which would become his signature. He joined the
Sutton Coldfield Society of Artists when he was 25,
and is now the longest-serving continuous member
of the prestigious group. As a member of the
Lichfield Society of Artists too, Dennis is a wellknown
member of the local arts community.
“I’ve been painting in and around Sutton Coldfield
for a very long time, and have sold a lot of paintings
in the area,” Dennis says.
ARTIST DENNIS HARPER IS
HOLDING A CELEBRATORY
EXHIBITION IN SHENSTONE
Landscapes are a particular passion for Dennis,
while architecture is another interest and he is often
commissioned to paint house pictures.
“A self-taught artist, I have captured scenes close to
home and have found inspiration on holiday, whether
it be in a Cornish hedgerow or in the swathes of
purple heather on the rolling Yorkshire Moors,”
Dennis says.
“We are spoiled for choice, and I wish people would
look around more often at the lovely countryside we
have here in the UK. It provides endless inspiration
for my work.”
The Celebration Exhibition of paintings by Dennis
Harper will run at Shenstone Community Library
from Tuesday, October 4 to Saturday, October 29.
Theatre for all
THERE’S A NEW SHOW IN TOWN – AND IT’S FOR EVERYONE, AS MIDLANDS THEATRE COMPANY
LET ME IN PRESENT THEIR REIMAGINING OF ONCE - THE MUSICAL IN LICHFIELD
If there’s one thing that makes a great evening out,
it’s a theatre show. But sometimes it can stretch the
pocket a little and, as fun as they are, you might
need to save up before splurging on some tickets.
Well, you might be in for a treat as Midlands based
theatre production company Let Me In are making
their regional debut with Once the Musical - and are
particularly focusing on accessibility by featuring a
range of shows on a Pay What You Can basis.
Director Christopher Buckle, said: “We believe that
theatre has both the potential and responsibility
to support the strengthening of communities and
in actively fighting against injustices that provide
a select few in society opportunities that should be
accessible to everyone.”
Let Me In are dedicated to creating intimate artistic
experiences that explore real and integral themes
in our society through a diverse array of artistic
mediums. In 2019, they made their debut with a
critically acclaimed production of Spring Awakening
in Lichfield and have since produced many more
performances including socially distanced outdoor
productions of Lord of the Flies, a new adaptation
of Macbeth and People, Places and Things by
Duncan Macmillan. The foundation of Let Me In
revolves around exploration of mental health and
identity, using theatre, dance and spoken word to
engage with these themes.
This month, they are back in Lichfield with a
show based on the Academy Award Winning
2006 film, and the winner of eight Tony Awards,
Once. The play tells the unforgettable story of two
disenfranchised artists, drawn together by their
shared love of music. The production features the
Oscar winning hit, Falling Slowly, and the beautiful
music of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (The
Swell Season, The Frames), with a book by Enda
Walsh (Lazarus, Ballyturk).
Let Me In have put their own spin on the folk
musical and have adapted it for a modern audience,
with an immersive new design and visionary creative
team. The production is being staged at The Hub at
SINGER-SONGWRITER
PHIL KING AS GUY
St Mary’s in Lichfield, with a talented cast including
singer-songwriters Luchi and Phil King as Girl and
Guy alongside an ensemble cast of actor musicians
from around the world.
“We are so blessed to have the opportunity to bring
this beautifully human story to the Midlands in this
brand new, regional debut production of Once. To
be working with a cast and creative team with this
level of talent, creativity and passion is exhilarating,
and we promise that this will be Once as you have
never seen it before,” said Christopher.
Artistic director of The Hub, Anthony Evans, added:
“The Hub is all about showcasing new work from
emerging artists and local talent. We’ve been working
with Let Me In for a long time now and know how
exciting and original their performances are. We are
really looking forward to Once and think it’s a great
story that audiences can easily connect with.”
Performances run until September 17,
with Pay What You Can shows available on
September 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 8pm. For more
Health Matters
DR DAVID ECCLESTON, FROM THE OAKLEY PARTNERSHIP
PRIVATE GP PRACTICE IN FOUR OAKS, DISCUSSES ALL THINGS HEALTH
EACH MONTH. THIS MONTH, HE TAKES A LOOK AT A COMMON
PROBLEM WHICH CAN OFTEN BE A SOURCE OF EMBARRASSMENT
This month, I will be addressing a common problem,
often incorrectly seen as a sign of poor hygiene.
Those of us old enough to remember the school
verruca nurse will recall the indignity of those white
‘verruca socks’ in swimming lessons!
Warts and verrucas are due to infection by the
human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than
150 known HPV types, only some of which infect the
skin. Infection begins in the deepest layer of the skin,
causing proliferation of the skin cells, and production
of infectious virus particles — the wart. A verruca is
simply a wart that grows on the foot. Walking around
on these warts causes them to grow inward rather
than outward, causing a flatter appearance, and
often causing pain on weight-bearing.
HPV is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact; if a
wart is scratched or picked, a wart may develop
under the fingernail, or the virus may be spread
to another area of skin. ‘Seeding’ of the virus in a
scratch can result in a line of warts. The incubation
period before the appearance of a wart can be as
long as 12 months, depending on the amount of
virus inoculated into the skin.
Topical over-the-counter and prescription treatment
includes wart paints, pastes, or patches, which work
by removing the surface skin cells. Topical treatment
is applied once daily to the wart. Treatment usually
makes the wart smaller and less uncomfortable, and
up to 70 per cent of warts resolve within 12 weeks
of daily applications. Unfortunately the need to pare
down the wart daily with a pumice stone or similar
leads to a higher failure rate, as the novelty of daily
wart care wanes.
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen is repeated at one
to two-week intervals to cause peeling of the surface
layer. It is uncomfortable, and can result in blistering
for several days. Treatment is required frequently to
prevent the wart regrowing between appointments,
and success is of the order of 70 per cent after three
to four months of regular freezing.
A remarkable new device, called Swift, is more than
80 per cent effective at permanently removing warts
and verrucas. This technology delivers a precise,
highly controlled energy dose to the treatment
area through a special probe. This is placed on
the same spot, five times, for two seconds a time.
The microwave energy helps stimulate an immune
response, which kills the virus. This machine is
unique in its approach - by ensuring the virus is
killed, the warts cannot return. Other wart and
verruca treatments do not impact the virus directly,
only the wart itself, so they continue to grow back.
Most patients will see a successful result after three to
four treatments. The effectiveness of each treatment
can be dependent on age and how long the wart has
been there, so the number of treatments required
can vary between patients. Unlike most treatments
for warts and verrucas, pain felt during the treatment
quickly subsides. In some cases the treated area may
feel sore post-treatment but will not prevent you
undertaking normal daily activities.
A MONTHLY REVIEW OF THE WORLD OF FINANCE FROM
LICHFIELD FINANCIAL ADVISER JEAN LAMB DipPFS
FEELING “TAX TRAPPED”?
With a rule book thousands of pages thick and regulations
seemingly changing all the time, the UK’s tax system is
famously complex. It means that for many people, tax
represents a threat with pitfalls at every turn. Here are
some of the most common - and costly - tax traps to look
out for.

IT PAYS TO SHARE
Most tax allowances, exemptions and tax-efficient
investment opportunities are available to each person in
a couple. For example, if only one person in a couple has
used up their ISA allowance for the current tax year, they
can gift some money to their partner who has some or all
of their own allowance left. The same applies with each
person’s annual Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowance.

LEAVING IT TO THE LAST MINUTE
Many of us are in the habit of paying attention to our
allowances only towards the end of each tax year. This
can result in it being too late to use some allowances and
exemptions effectively. Try and get ahead of the game at
the start of each tax year.

JOINING THE TAX-FREE CASH RUSH
Here’s a humdinger I see all the time among those
reaching retirement and accessing their pension. They
rush to draw all their tax-free cash in one go for no reason
other than simply because they can.
However, it can be an immensely valuable tool in planning
clients’ retirement income as it can be used as part of their
annual “income” to help reduce the Income Tax paid
each year. And don’t forget - if taken out and not spent, it
can increase your Inheritance Tax (IHT) liability.

SAYING NO TO FREE MONEY
A surprising number of people forget, or can’t be
bothered, to reclaim certain payments to which they’re
entitled. For example, some higher-rate and additionalrate
taxpayers fail to reclaim the pension tax relief they’re
due, while the tax relief available on gifts to charities can
also be overlooked. Yet this can be done quite simply via
self-assessment or by calling HMRC with the figures.

NOT REVIEWING OPPORTUNITIES ANNUALLY
Many potentially significant tax-saving opportunities come
around every year on a “use it or lose it” basis. These
include the £20,000 ISA allowance, the £2,000 dividend
allowance and the £12,300 CGT allowance. Over a
number of years, not planning and not taking advantage
of these opportunities can cause serious tax damage.
GETTING CAUGHT BY THE 60% INCOME TAX
RATE
The way the personal allowance works creates what is
effectively a 60% Income Tax rate on earnings between
£100,000 and £125,140. It’s a complex concept so I am
not going to explain it in any more detail here. Suffice to
say, if the cap fits, I suggest you seek professional advice as
this can potentially be mitigated or avoided altogether.

IN SUMMARY - AVOIDING THE PITFALLS
Tax-saving strategy is always best planned before the tax
year starts, so that it can be executed in a structured way
throughout the year rather than left to the last minute.
I am a great believer in running through a tax health
check with my clients each year in order to highlight
any missed opportunities so we can then address them
together. This is a complicated area where many mistakes
can be easily made and just as easily avoided. So, it makes
a lot of sense to seek specialist, experienced advice when it
comes to tax and its impact on your wider financial plans.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be
directly linked to the performance of the funds you select
and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You
may get back less than you invested.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation,
can change at any time. The value of any tax relief
generally depends on individual circumstances.
A nod of support for Ukraine
A FABULOUS RANGE OF UKRAINIAN WATCHES FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN IS NOW AVAILABLE
AT ALLEN BROWN JEWELLERY, AT THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY SHOPPING VILLAGE, AS A
SMALL WAY OF SHOWING SUPPORT TO UKRAINE DURING THIS TIME.
The watch brand is called Kleynods, and the name
derives from the German word Kleinode and Polish word
Kleinote meaning treasure. Kleynods are special signs
of state power, symbols of the power of the hetmans of
Ukraine.
Owner Allen Brown says: “After a chance meeting
with some of Kleynods staff I was deeply moved by
their strength and determination to maintain some
sort of normal life and business in the most terrible of
circumstances. I am delighted to be able to help in a small
way by bringing their watches to the UK.”
The ‘Forces’ range is a line of military-style wrist watches
based on Swiss quartz Ronda movement, inspired by the
bravery of the Ukrainian servicemen, while the ‘Kleynods
of Independence’ range is dedicated to the anniversary
of Independence of Ukraine. The motif of the original
design of watches was the small state emblem of Ukraine
and its main element – the famous Ukrainian trident.
The watches retail from £175 to £340 and can found at
Allen Brown Jewellery or online at
Finding treasure in Burntwood
LIBRARIES ARE NO LONGER JUST ABOUT BORROWING BOOKS – BUT
BURNTWOOD’S HAS A PARTICULARLY SPARKLING NEW STRING TO ITS BOW.
Libraries are no longer just about borrowing books – but
Burntwood’s has a particularly sparkling new string to its
bow.
The Sankeys Corner library on Bridge Cross Road is
playing host to Richard Winterton Auctioneers once a
week and every Tuesday specialists will be there from
2.30pm to 4.30pm expertly equipped to examine jewellery,
watches, gold and silver.
The family firm is an associate member of The National
Association of Jewellers and the jewellery department
features certified gemmologists and diamond graders.
The new ‘pop-up’ valuations are completely free for
people to drop in and discover if they are sitting on a
fortune!
“Discovering hidden treasure is the essence of what we’re
about and we’re delighted to bring this new free evaluation
service to Burntwood,” said Richard, who appears
regularly as an auctioneer on television programmes
including Bargain Hunt and Dickinson’s Real Deal.
“As demonstrated by recent sales, collectors all over the
world keep their fingers on the pulse and can easily join
our auctions online. With a new programme of weekly
sales taking us into the autumn and beyond, it’s a great
time to drop in to see us and make the most of a buoyant
auction market.”
The new Burntwood Library sessions add to the
company’s existing pop-up valuations at The Hub at
St Mary’s in Lichfield city centre from 9.30am to 11am
on Tuesdays and at Richard Winterton Auctioneers’
Knit picking
AS WE TRANSITION INTO THE COOLER MONTHS, IT’S TIME TO TURN OUR
ATTENTION TO THAT FAITHFUL WARDROBE HERO, AS KNITWEAR IS SET TO BE THE
STAR OF THE AW SHOW, SAYS AMY NORBURY
IT was hard to imagine just a mere couple of weeks ago
when we were all basking in a 30-degree heat wave that
knitwear season was just around the corner. But here we
are. The nights are starting to draw in, which can only
mean one thing; autumn is on its way.
And with the start of autumn comes that eternal fashion
dilemma; how to dress for the changing seasons? Now this
is where layers usually come into their own, but for AW22
perhaps designers had the threat of rising energy costs
on their minds because knitwear has been the standout
wardrobe fixture across the catwalks. The message is to
forget the central heating and wrap yourself up in the
cosiest garb the fashion gods have to offer.
From preppy twin-sets at Chanel to Louis Vuitton’s
love affair with Fairisle style, knitwear was just about
everywhere. Dressed down with denim or party-ready
teamed with evening dresses, it was wool for all occasions.
The good news is that the standout styles are ones which
have been around for seasons now, meaning there’s a
good chance you’ve got an on-trend piece or two already
lurking in your wardrobe. Cable knit sweaters are a
perennial favourite, perfect for casual cosiness, while
jumper dresses take knitwear and make it ‘going out’
worthy.
Cardigans have been having a fashion moment for a
while, and there’s no shortage of button-down numbers
on the high streets right now. From chunky, casual
throwover to fitted fine-knit, there’s a cardi style to suit
everyone. And cardigans no longer mean librarian-esque
either; wear a waist-length number with your favourite
jeans and just a bra underneath for effortless chic with a
touch of va-va-voom.
In keeping with the preppy knitwear theme, sweater vests
are another geek-chic garment to top the style stakes
this season. Beloved of fashionistas everywhere, the
sweater vest has thrown off its nerdy image to become the
knitwear layer of choice. Wear solo while it’s still shortsleeve
weather, and layer with shirts or dresses as the
temperatures drop.
The anti-ageing beauty booster
AS WE AGE IT’S INEVITABLE THAT OUR SKIN WILL AGE TOO, SO THERE’S ONE VITAL INGREDIENT WE
SHOULD BE INCLUDING IN YOUR DAILY SKINCARE ROUTINE… AND THAT’S COLLAGEN. DEBORAH
MITCHELL, CELEBRITY FACIALIST AND FOUNDER OF HEAVEN SKINCARE, EXPLAINS WHY
VITAMIN C CAN HELP WITH NATURAL
COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS
Remember when you were younger and your
complexion just had that lovely natural firmness?
Before those pesky wrinkles start to appear and we
notice sagging around our jawlines, our skin felt taut,
healthy and hydrated – even without the countless
lotions and potions that end up filling our bathroom
cabinets. The reason for this is simple … collagen.
As the most abundant protein our bodies produce,
collagen plays a vital role in the structure and
function of skin, bones and connective tissue. Think
of it as the glue that helps our body maintain its
firmness as it binds tissues and cells together. Sadly
as we age, the amount starts to diminish; so much
so that as we reach our 50s it’s estimated that we’ve
already lost up to a third of it. This causes cell
structures to weaken and in turn, skin loses that
youthful elasticity.
There are steps we can take: including certain foods
in our diet, like bone broth, can help boost these
natural building blocks; while studies show that
upping our vitamin C intake, with citrus fruits and
berries, can enhance collagen synthesis. We can also
add naturally-derived supplements – that include
marine collagen, for example – to our daily routine
to help replace those lost levels.
And while the skin benefits of taking collagen
are well documented, it’s great for boosting your
crowning glory too. Research reveals that because it
acts as an antioxidant it protects against the negative
effects caused by free radicals which can damage hair
follicles.
clients.
“As a convenience to clients, our office will open
