Near the three rivers section of the Kaiapoi River were Kath Coster, of Redwood, and Karen Berry, of Linwood. “We have about 40 I guess, there are slim pickings at the moment but we’ll see what the day holds,” Kath said. “If we can get enough to cook and eat then we will be happy.” The pair had been going to the area for years and were pleased to be able to get out and catch the white delicacy in a catching season cut short this year. Nearby, Doug Gilmour, of Sydenham, had only caught four whitebait in three hours. “It’s always a lottery,” he said. “It’s my favourite spot on the river, and today is my day off from carpet laying.” Gilmour says he had been going to the river for the past 10 years and catches vary. “Sometimes they are good, others not so, we’ll see what the other side of high tide is like,” he said, setting his nets to catch what he could. Neil Shanks, of Rangiora, hadn’t caught anything in an hour. “We’ll see,” he said, with the eternal optimism felt when talking with the white baiters lining the river. “Yesterday I had nothing for quite a while then caught a pound so I was happy.” Shanks said it’s a nice way to spend a morning. Meeting held to unite forces
against ‘large increase’ in crime
• By Tina Grumball
John
Filsell
A COMMUNITY meeting has
been held to discuss safety in
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
areas amid a “quite a large
increase” in crime.
At the request of the Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board, the meeting
assembled key organisations in
the area to discuss initiatives that
were under way and to identify
how members of the board could
assist with them.
Attendees
included both
the Hornby and
Riccarton community
patrols,
Neighbourhood
Support Canterbury
and NZ
Police, as well as
some members of
the community board and community
governance team.
City council head of community
support and partnerships
John Filsell said members of the
community board provided examples
of safety issues identified
by residents in the area.
Community board member
Mark Peters said there has been
“quite a large increase in crime
happening around Hornby” at
last month’s board meeting. Examples
he mentioned included
Sarah
Pallett
MP for Ilam
My team and I are here to
help. Please get in touch with
my office if you need any
A number of residents had
spoken to him about it, he said.
Speaking to Western News this
week, Peters said it was of “most
concern” that a couple of dairies
in Hornby appeared to have
closed down after one was ramraided
and the other was the
victim of an aggravated robbery.
“Plus there’s a lot of boy racer
industrial and also Hornby
Peters mentioned that through
residents’ association social
media pages, among others, they
had seen reports of cars being
broken into and intruders wandering
around properties.
At the community safety
meeting, Filsell said the “organisations
present outlined what
they currently do to support
these issues and what support
could be offered by the community
board in the future”.
Also chewed over was
what replications could be
made from the safety project
under way in the Waimāero
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board area, as well
as opportunities to contact those
in charge of the community
safety space and how best to
share the key messages of each
organisation.
The ideas discussed would be
used to create a project plan and
next steps will be provided to
those who attended the meeting,
Filsell said.
It was anticipated that would
include a community safety expo
where residents can meet with
organisations who support safety,
and working with online platforms
to ensure the community
are aware of the right reporting
channels and of how to connect
with the right organisations.
Peters said there had been a
fairly steady increase in crime
for a while, but it did seem to be
escalating.
“Whether it’s people
copycatting offending, one event
feeding off another and a chain
reaction, it’s something that
needs to be nipped in the bud for
sure.”
UPGRADE: From young Kwik Stiks players to seniors, new surfaces at Nunweek Park will be a benefit to all who play hockey.
$2.7m upgrade for Nunweek Park playing surfaces
YOUNG HOCKEY players will
soon be able to play on surfaces
good enough for the Black Sticks
thanks to a $393,400 grant from
New Zealand Community Trust.
Two of Nunweek Park’s
sand-based turfs owned and
maintained by the Canterbury
Artificial Surfaces Trust are to be
updated to modern water-based
surfaces along with new lighting,
fencing and drainage.
The two turfs were laid in 2012
following the loss of two waterbased
turfs at Porritt Park in
Avonside.
Since then, the turfs at
Nunweek Park in Harewood
have been a seven-days-a-week
home to the region’s 6000
hockey players, with up to 100
games and 50-60 training games
taking place there each week.
But with their heavy use, the
turfs are now in a poor state
and are becoming unsafe to play
on. The $2.7 million upgrade
is being funded from CAST
reserves and with the support of
a range of community funders
including the $393k grant from
NZCT.
Said CAST chair Selwyn
Maister: “We’ve squeezed every
last minute out of these two
sand turfs, and they are now
past their use by dates. These
new generation turfs will be a
giant step forward for the future
growth of community hockey
in Canterbury. We’re incredibly
grateful for the amazing support
provided by NZCT and our
other funders. The future is
looking bright for hockey in the
region.”
Former Black Stick and current
NZCT trustee Lesley Murdoch
was delighted with the grant.
“I can only wish my generation
had facilities like those planned
for Nunweek Park. It’s fantastic
to be able to give young players
a surface as good as those
played on at the Olympics.
It will greatly improve their
development, provide enjoyment
and fun.”
Said NZCT chief executive
Mike Knel: “We’re only able to
make grants like this through
the support of our venues in
Canterbury and the people who
patronise them. Together we
PHOTOS: GEOFF SOPER
are helping thousands of people
in Canterbury to stay active for
years to come.
“We’re delighted to be able
to help modernise Nunweek
Park, especially for Canterbury’s
young players. I am sure parents
will enjoy the water surfaces’
kinder treatment of their
children’s elbows and knees.”
The two new water turfs will
add to another sand-based
turf already in place. Work is
expected to start in late this
month and be completed by
March.
“They’re beautiful family
homes whose innovations
promote great living and tenant
health and well-being.”
The open-plan homes are a
variant of Naylor Love’s Mahana
House design, developed as
a resource and time-efficient
response to community housing
demand nationally.
Naylor Love community living
project director Craig Dixon said
the response applies “biophilic
design” to bring the outside in
while providing generous, warm
and healthy space for family
living.
Utilising robust, lowmaintenance
materials and
ENERGY EFFICIENT: The new two-bedroom homes in Halswell have a New Zealand Green
Building Council Homestar 7 rating.
building to exceed current
building and thermal efficiency
standards means the homes will
be cheaper to maintain, with an
enduringly low carbon footprint.
“Having a low carbon footprint
isn’t just about the build – which
in this case is better than carbon
neutral – but about the life of the
home, so the homes are designed
and built to be cheap and efficient
to run for tenants and for the
Trust, which reduces operational
carbon over its lifetime,” Dixon
said.
“Community housing is in it
for the long-term, so sustainability
has to be valued.”
The resource-efficient build
utilised offsite pre-nail and nail
laminate timber manufacture,
and computerised numerical
control cutting to reduce waste
and improve the prefabrication
programme.
The wall linings are of highpressure
laminate, which is more
durable than plasterboard. They
have high insulation-value roof
panels, high performing thermal
glazing, and there is additional
insulation in the framework.
The homes have a New Zealand
Green Building Council Homestar
7 rating.
The new community will be
home to families previously
on the Ministry of Social
Development’s Public Housing
Register.
About a quarter of the people
on the register in Christchurch
need two bedrooms. All of
ŌCHT’s new communities
include family homes, whether
they are built on bare land or
replace old or earthquakedamaged
complexes of single
bedroom units.
Kearney said a safe and secure
home is the basic foundation
from which a family can thrive,
and ŌCHT is committed to
providing more family homes as
its building programme grows.
“The new homes provide
a wonderful opportunity to
for families, in an established
community that’s close to so
many services,” Kearney said.
“We’re grateful to the
community that supports us, and
we look forward to welcoming
new tenants into a community
they will call home.”
Canty University dominates futsal
MINE: Competing for the ball during their National Tertiary
Futsal Championship heat match at the Mainpower
Stadium in Rangiora were Luke Pritchard (left) of Canterbury
University and Matthew Peden of the University of
Wellington.
• By John Cosgrove
BALL HANDLING skills and
determination came to the
fore at the National Tertiary
Futsal Championship held over
the weekend in the recently
opened Mainpower Stadium in
Rangiora.
Canterbury University did the
double, winning both the men’s
and women’s titles against fierce
competition from the University
of Auckland teams.
Seven men’s and six women’s
teams from seven universities
nationwide, hit the courts over
the four days of competition and
worked through a multi-round
robin tournament of futsal.
The action came thick and fast
during all heats at the University
and Tertiary Sport of New
Zealand’s annual competition
which again saw South Island
teams dominate.
THe Canterbury University
men’s team played six matches,
won five and drew the other. The
2021 champions headed into
the final with a massive goal
difference of 43 goals over their
arch rivals.
THe final match on Sunday
morning was another
demonstrating Canterbury’s
dominance and ball skills,
easily beating University of
Auckland 8-1 to claim gold in the
tournament.
SLIDE TACKLE: Canterbury University’s Mitchell Radcliffe
goes flying after a slide tackle by University of Wellington’s
Dan Watts.
Later, on Sunday afternoon
Canterbury University’s women’s
team faced off against their
biggest rivals University of
Auckland and in a nail-biting
final match where the scores
were evenly matched right into
the second spell of extra time,
Canterbury finally get one more
home with just 1min 22sec
remaining, to win 5-4.
Funding applications
open for projects
that address
climate change
THE CITY council’s
sustainability fund is now open
and accepting applications
for projects that help address
the council’s climate change
objectives and targets.
Anyone can apply for funding,
including community
organisations, schools, social
enterprises and businesses.
The fund’s key objectives
are to meet the challenge of
climate change through every
means available, to help our
community understand and
prepare for the ongoing impacts
of climate change, benefit from
a just transition to an innovative,
low-emission economy
and be guardians of our natural
environment and taonga.
“It’s awesome to see the
range of ideas and projects that
emerge every time we open the
fund. We are lucky to have so
many passionate, innovative,
solution-focused groups delivering
sustainability projects in
Christchurch,” city council
climate resilience lead Tony
Moore said.
“Through the sustainability
fund we can encourage new
resulting in even bigger benefits
for our community and environment.”
Projects that have been funded
previously include a car sharing
network for the Little River
community, setting up composting
facilities in a school,
a project that refurbished old
laptops giving them to people
in need, support for a business
to establish a local plastics recycling
facility, a climate coach to
help reduce emissions in Lyttelton
and the creation of a climate
action campus.
“We are keen to support
projects that help reduce
greenhouse gas emissions or
grow community resilience to
sailing programme
THE PLEASANT Point Sailing
Club launched its 102nd sailing
season on Sunday with 24 boats
lining up for the starter’s gun,
and another six just out to enjoy
the day.
The race started in light winds
under sunny blue skies, with
these conditions prevailing for
much of the race. The forecast
blustery nor’wester arrived for
the last third to inject some
Every weekend, almost without
exception, I spend a portion of my
time planning for the week and
month ahead. Sometimes it’s a
fairly clinical exercise: confirming
appointments, researching different
market indicators, prepping for oneon-one
sessions and working on our
company’s goals and direction.
Sounds straightforward and it is,
but at other times it requires a
much deeper overview because
when you’ve been doing things
for a very long time it’s easy
to keep doing them the same way
without question. I like to counter this by
venturing down rabbit holes looking at
new ways of applying different creative
processes to the business.
There’s always so much to learn or
relearn and, being curious by nature,
I sometimes start with the simplest of
concepts.
Here’s one that began with a TED Talk
by Margaret Heffernan, a Professor of
Practice at the University of Bath School
of Management.
One of the presentation’s main focus
HARRISON JOSEPH
03 352 6166 or 027 695 7840
harrison.joseph@harcourtsgold.co.nz
areas was Social Capital.
Social Capital is all about relationships.
It enables people to work together as a
team rather than as isolated individuals
chasing their own goals. It powers up
sports teams and companies alike. An
easy explanation given by Professor
Heffernan was: “it’s the mortar rather
than the bricks” in a relationship, team
or business. It holds us together, driving
greater empathy and connection.
Here’s where it becomes significant,
and it feels particularly important to
me as part of a leadership team. It’s
where ideas flow, loyalty grows and trust
strengthens. It can start with the simple
easy gestures: greeting everyone every
day, every time; shared food and events;
celebrating birthdays and successes;
business planning aimed at developing
skills and talents; as well as a ‘hand-up
not hand-out’ philosophy. There are
numerous ways of making the mortar
in your business stronger, but you must
focus on that growth.
It’s so easy to let these things slip. I have
memories of working in an environment
where the person in charge never, ever
greeted you unless you had upset the
status quo and that greeting was more
of a snarl followed by a note written
in red plastered up on the office wall.
It’s no surprise that the fractured team
struggled to find its best work.
A culture of helpfulness is another
powerful enabler and this plays a big
part in our business. It’s critical to how we
think of our people and our desire to add
value to the industry we’re part of.
So, as you work through your own
personal journey at home or at work, tap
into these ideas and actions. Teamwork
bests the actions of the individual,
especially if it’s aligned and values based.
Do more to help the person beside you,
give of your time and yourself … who
knows where it could go?
And who knows what new rabbit holes I’ll
get to explore in the weeks and months
ahead?
RAY WHITE PAPANUI NEWS
Choosing the right agent to
sell your home
Selecting the right agent to sell
your home is a crucial piece of
the puzzle to ensure that you are
making informed decisions in the
property sale process and in the end,
comfortable with the outcome of the
sale.
There is no one answer to the best
agent, as everyone’s approach to
selling their property will be different.
There are some key things that you
might like to consider when choosing
the right agent for you.
Research the options
In finding an agent that you can
align your property sale with, it is
important to research the options
that are available, usually in your local
area, from the pool of agents that are
available.
You might like to look at who amongst
the pool is a local agent and has
local knowledge of the area and the
market that you are selling your
home. If they are familiar with the
local area and market, then they are
likely to have more knowledge of
what prospective buyers look for
and the best ways to present your
property for sale.
Asking for recommendations from
friends, family and colleagues is also a
good option to widen the prospective
agents that you might like to employ
and make a shortlist of those who you
feel would be best suited.
Ask as many questions as
you need to
A good agent while knowing the
local area, should also have a great
track record of their past and recent
sales and listings. Ask questions like,
what are the average days on market
for your listings, or what is your
auction clearance rate? Also test their
knowledge of the local market and
facilities like school zones, amenities
and lifestyle options that would draw
prospective buyers.
Asking for examples of their track
record may also help to make your
decision and they should be able to
provide case studies of recent sales
or situations that may be like yours
and how they managed the sale
to gain a positive outcome for the
vendor.
Visit their open homes
When you have a shortlist of
potential agents that you would like
to choose from, before bringing them
in to appraise your home and present
what they can offer, visit some of
their open homes to get a feel for
how they operate.
Walking through a live open of
another property that may be like
yours will give you an opportunity
to view how they may present your
home if they were to take care of
the sale and how they will treat
prospective buyers through the sales
process.
Set guidelines and ensure
that you are secure
When you make the decision to sell,
and the paperwork is signed, a good
agent will have a sound strategy
throughout the campaign and a
contingency plan for each step along
the sale. They should communicate
with you throughout the whole
process until the end and beyond.
Make sure that you are also
communicating any expectations
that you have of the sale, any special
conditions and set guidelines in the
beginning to avoid possible confusion
down the track. This will also help
you to feel secure in your decision
throughout the sale.
If you are thinking of selling, please
get in contact with one of the Ray
White Papanui team today. It would
be our privilege to assist you.
