Nearby, Doug Gilmour, of Sydenham, had only caught four whitebait in three hours. “It’s always a lottery,” he said. “It’s my favourite spot on the river, and today is my day off from carpet laying.” Gilmour says he had been going to the river for the past 10 years and catches vary. “Sometimes they are good, others not so, we’ll see what the other side of high tide is like,” he said, setting his nets to catch what he could. Papanui Library to be closed for six-week upgrade THE PAPANUI Library is closing for six weeks for refurbishment and a change of layout. Meeting held to unite forces

against ‘large increase’ in crime

A COMMUNITY meeting has

been held to discuss safety in

the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton

areas amid a “quite a large

increase” in crime.

At the request of the Waipuna

Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton

Community Board, the meeting

assembled key organisations in

the area to discuss initiatives that

were under way and to identify

how members of the board could

assist with them.

Attendees

the Hornby and

Riccarton community

patrols,

Neighbourhood

Support Canterbury

and NZ

Police, as well as

some members of

the community board and community

governance team.

John Filsell said members of the

community board provided examples

of safety issues identified

by residents in the area.

“quite a large increase in crime

happening around Hornby” at

last month’s board meeting. Examples

Peters mentioned that through

residents’ association social

media pages, among others, they

had seen reports of cars being

broken into and intruders wandering

around properties.

At the community safety

meeting, Filsell said the “organisations

present outlined what

they currently do to support

these issues and what support

could be offered by the community

board in the future”.

Also chewed over was

what replications could be

made from the safety project

under way in the Waimāero

Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood

Community Board area, as well

as opportunities to contact those

in charge of the community

safety space and how best to

share the key messages of each

organisation.

The ideas discussed would be

used to create a project plan and

next steps will be provided to

those who attended the meeting,

Filsell said.

It was anticipated that would

include a community safety expo

where residents can meet with

organisations who support safety,

and working with online platforms

to ensure the community

are aware of the right reporting

channels and of how to connect

with the right organisations.

Peters said there had been a

fairly steady increase in crime

for a while, but it did seem to be

escalating.

“Whether it’s people

copycatting offending, one event

feeding off another and a chain

reaction, it’s something that

needs to be nipped in the bud for

sure.”

the parking area directly behind

the library will be closed off for

this period, including the row of

parking spots closest to the back

of the library. The rest of the car

park will stay open as normal.

During the closure, items

cannot be returned to Papanui

Library. However, they can be left

at council libraries around the city

and on Banks Peninsula.

The nearest alternatives are

Fendalton Library, Redwood

Library and Ōrauwhata:

Bishopdale Library.

From September 19, any hold

items requested for pick-up at

Papanui Library will instead be

available at Fendalton Library,

UPGRADE: From young Kwik Stiks players to seniors, new surfaces at Nunweek Park will be a benefit to all who play hockey.

$2.7m upgrade for Nunweek Park playing surfaces

YOUNG HOCKEY players will

soon be able to play on surfaces

good enough for the Black Sticks

thanks to a $393,400 grant from

New Zealand Community Trust.

Two of Nunweek Park’s

sand-based turfs owned and

maintained by the Canterbury

Artificial Surfaces Trust are to be

updated to modern water-based

surfaces along with new lighting,

fencing and drainage.

The two turfs were laid in 2012

following the loss of two waterbased

turfs at Porritt Park in

Avonside.

Since then, the turfs at

Nunweek Park in Harewood

have been a seven-days-a-week

home to the region’s 6000

hockey players, with up to 100

games and 50-60 training games

taking place there each week.

But with their heavy use, the

turfs are now in a poor state

and are becoming unsafe to play

on. The $2.7 million upgrade

is being funded from CAST

reserves and with the support of

a range of community funders

including the $393k grant from

NZCT.

Said CAST chair Selwyn

Maister: “We’ve squeezed every

last minute out of these two

sand turfs, and they are now

past their use by dates. These

new generation turfs will be a

giant step forward for the future

growth of community hockey

in Canterbury. We’re incredibly

grateful for the amazing support

provided by NZCT and our

other funders. The future is

looking bright for hockey in the

region.”

NZCT trustee Lesley Murdoch

was delighted with the grant.

“I can only wish my generation

had facilities like those planned

for Nunweek Park. It’s fantastic

to be able to give young players

a surface as good as those

played on at the Olympics.

It will greatly improve their

development, provide enjoyment

New community homes have 7-star rating

ŌTAUTAHI Community

Housing Trust is opening more

innovative community housing,

designed for tenant well-being

and long-term environmental

sustainability.

The six two-bedroom homes in

Halswell, officially opened

by Minister of Housing Megan

Woods, will be ŌCHT’s 12th

community of new homes

and its first in the city’s

southwest.

The homes are designed and

built by Naylor Love.

ŌCHT chief executive Cate

Kearney said the modern,

architecturally designed homes

will establish a new benchmark,

while providing security and

opportunities for families in

need.

“They’re beautiful family

homes whose innovations

promote great living and tenant

health and well-being.”

The open-plan homes are a

variant of Naylor Love’s Mahana

House design, developed as

a resource and time-efficient

response to community housing

demand nationally.

The wall linings are of highpressure

laminate, which is more

durable than plasterboard. They

have high insulation-value roof

panels, high performing thermal

glazing, and there is additional

insulation in the framework.

The homes have a New Zealand

Green Building Council Homestar

7 rating.

The new community will be

home to families previously

on the Ministry of Social

Development’s Public Housing

About a quarter of the people

on the register in Christchurch

need two bedrooms. All of

ŌCHT’s new communities

Kearney said a safe and secure

BALL HANDLING skills and

determination came to the

fore at the National Tertiary

Futsal Championship held over

the weekend in the recently

opened Mainpower Stadium in

Rangiora.

Canterbury University did the

double, winning both the men’s

and women’s titles against fierce

competition from the University

of Auckland teams.

Seven men’s and six women’s

teams from seven universities

nationwide, hit the courts over

the four days of competition and

worked through a multi-round

robin tournament of futsal.

The action came thick and fast

during all heats at the University

and Tertiary Sport of New

Zealand’s annual competition

which again saw South Island

teams dominate.

THe Canterbury University

men’s team played six matches,

won five and drew the other. The

2021 champions headed into

the final with a massive goal

difference of 43 goals over their

arch rivals.

THe final match on Sunday

morning was another

demonstrating Canterbury’s

dominance and ball skills,

easily beating University of

Auckland 8-1 to claim gold in the

tournament.

Canterbury University’s women’s

team faced off against their

biggest rivals University of

sustainability fund is now open

and accepting applications

for projects that help address

the council’s climate change

objectives and targets.

Anyone can apply for funding,

including community

organisations, schools, social

enterprises and businesses.

The fund’s key objectives

are to meet the challenge of

climate change through every

means available, to help our

community understand and

prepare for the ongoing impacts

of climate change, benefit from

a just transition to an innovative,

low-emission economy

and be guardians of our natural

environment and taonga.

“It’s awesome to see the

range of ideas and projects that

emerge every time we open the

fund. We are lucky to have so

many passionate, innovative,

solution-focused groups delivering

sustainability projects in

Christchurch,” city council

climate resilience lead Tony

Moore said.

“Through the sustainability

fund we can encourage new

Every weekend, almost without

exception, I spend a portion of my

time planning for the week and

month ahead. Sometimes it’s a

fairly clinical exercise: confirming

appointments, researching different

market indicators, prepping for oneon-one

sessions and working on our

company’s goals and direction.

Sounds straightforward and it is,

but at other times it requires a

much deeper overview because

when you’ve been doing things

for a very long time it’s easy

to keep doing them the same way

without question. I like to counter this by

venturing down rabbit holes looking at

new ways of applying different creative

processes to the business.

There’s always so much to learn or

relearn and, being curious by nature,

I sometimes start with the simplest of

concepts.

Here’s one that began with a TED Talk

by Margaret Heffernan, a Professor of

Practice at the University of Bath School

of Management.

Social Capital is all about relationships.

It enables people to work together as a

team rather than as isolated individuals

chasing their own goals. It powers up

sports teams and companies alike. An

easy explanation given by Professor

Heffernan was: “it’s the mortar rather

than the bricks” in a relationship, team

or business. It holds us together, driving

greater empathy and connection.

Here’s where it becomes significant,

and it feels particularly important to

me as part of a leadership team. It’s

where ideas flow, loyalty grows and trust

strengthens. It can start with the simple

easy gestures: greeting everyone every

day, every time; shared food and events;

celebrating birthdays and successes;

business planning aimed at developing

skills and talents; as well as a ‘hand-up

not hand-out’ philosophy. There are

numerous ways of making the mortar

in your business stronger, but you must

focus on that growth.

It’s so easy to let these things slip. I have

memories of working in an environment

where the person in charge never, ever

greeted you unless you had upset the

status quo and that greeting was more

of a snarl followed by a note written

in red plastered up on the office wall.

It’s no surprise that the fractured team

struggled to find its best work.

A culture of helpfulness is another

powerful enabler and this plays a big

part in our business. It’s critical to how we

think of our people and our desire to add

value to the industry we’re part of.

So, as you work through your own

personal journey at home or at work, tap

into these ideas and actions. Teamwork

bests the actions of the individual,

especially if it’s aligned and values based.

Do more to help the person beside you,

give of your time and yourself … who

knows where it could go?

And who knows what new rabbit holes I’ll

get to explore in the weeks and months

ahead?

3 tbsp red wine vinegar

3 tbsp coriander seeds

2 tbsp fresh rosemary
