Operation Afghan Safety
When the Taliban assumed power in Afghanistan last year,
West Kootenay Friends of Refugees (WKFOR) decided to
sponsor an Afghan-Hazara family. The Canadian government
set up a program called Operation Afghan Safety, which was
designed to bring 40,000 people to Canada. Afghans who
had worked for the Canadian government were given highest
priority. Next were people who were considered at high risk
because of their human rights activities.
In April 2022, an organization based in Toronto called Journalists
for Human Rights contacted WKFOR to ask if they
would take a family they knew of. The group of volunteers
based in Rossland readily agreed.
In December 2021, the father of the family was arrested
and tortured. He was a journalist and had reported on human
rights abuses by the Taliban. His wife was a university lecturer
and has her Master’s degree in women’s issues. She is also an
activist at risk. They have two young daughters. The father
was eventually released and the family escaped to Islamabad,
Pakistan, where they contacted JHR for help. They have waited
in Pakistan without status, in the hope of a new start elsewhere.
JHR was very helpful in preparing their applications to Canada.
They have been accepted as refugees, passed immigration
interviews and medicals, and as of this week they are “travel
ready”. The final step is for the International Office for Migration
to arrange flights. In WKFOR’s experience, this means
that the family is likely to arrive at the Castlegar airport within
weeks. WKFOR will be raising funds to support this family
for a year. On October 2 at 2 pm, there will be a concert at
the United Church in Trail with admission by donation. Tax
receipts will be issued and all funds go directly to the family’s
costs of living. Carolyn Cameron, Sarah Currie, Leslie Mahr
and Hendrik Mendes have volunteered their substantial musical
talent in support of WKFOR’s efforts.
WKFOR is also in search of accommodation for the family,
and any leads would be appreciated. Please contact them at
Saskatchewan on
January 4, 1930.
He felt privileged
to provide medical
care in many
communities for
6 decades across
2 countries, a gift
he never took for
granted. Doc was
delighted to call
Kaslo home for
his final chapter.
Richard leaves a
legacy of those
he cared for both professionally and socially: His
wife Zoe, all his treasured extended family including
daughters: Heather and Moira, (grandchildren Kyle
and Lyndsay), his golf buddies, and recreational
flying community.
Richard in preparation of his final plan signs off
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor,
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, born
21 April 1926; died 8 September 2022
The Longest Reign
Queen Elizabeth II,
who has died aged 96,
became through the
course of her long reign
not only the oldest sovereign
in the country’s
history but also its longest
serving.
Elizabeth Alexandra
Mary Windsor was born
on 21 April 1926, in a
house just off Berkeley
Square in London,
the first child of Albert,
Duke of York, second
son of George V, and
his duchess, the former
to advise and warn political leaders privately and to show
herself publicly as a focus of national life, celebration and
commemoration.
The long reign of Queen Elizabeth II was marked by her
strong sense of duty and her determination to dedicate her
life to her throne and to her people.
She became for many the one constant point in a rapidly
changing world as British influence declined, society
changed beyond recognition and the role of the monarchy
itself came into question.
Her success in maintaining the monarchy through such
turbulent times was even more remarkable given that, at the
time of her birth, no-one could have foreseen that the throne
would be her destiny.
And now that destiny passes on to King Charles III!
4.64x6.62
The Guardian
Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
She is survived by their four
children, the Prince of Wales, the
Princess Royal, Prince Andrew and
Prince Edward, eight grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
The 42nd of a line of kings and
queens of first England, then Britain,
then the United Kingdom,
since William the Conqueror, she
was also the sixth queen-sovereign
of England and the fourth of the
UK. In addition, she was queen and
head of state of 15 other countries,
stretching from Fiji, Australia and
New Zealand to the Bahamas and
Canada, all once part of the former
British empire. She was for seven
decades head of the Commonwealth,
whose 54 countries comprise
2.1 billion people, a third of
the globe’s population.
In accordance with the precedent
established by Henry VIII, the
Queen was also Defender of the
Faith and Supreme Governor of the
Church of England, a role she took
much more seriously in both her
private and public lives than many
of her predecessors.
Her reign encompassed a period
that saw some of the greatest
changes in technological development,
industrial, economic and
social life across the world of any
era, yet it is hard to see her name
being bestowed, as her predecessor
Queen Victoria’s was, as the
defining symbol of an age. Instead
she played, largely impeccably, the
part of a modern constitutional
monarch, a symbolic figurehead
with a right to be consulted and
THC or CBD,
Which One is Better?
It really depends on your situation and why you are consuming
cannabis. THC has gotten a bad rap as being a ‘recreational’
cannabinoid with no medical benefits, which just
isn’t true. All parts of the cannabis plant have medicinal value
when consumed in the right amount, at the right time and
with a clear intention.
THC and CBD are the two most popular cannabinoids
found in the cannabis plant, though there are many, many
more that are currently being researched and have many beneficial
effects on the body.
CBD does not impair your cognitive abilities, it may even
enhance them by increasing energy, focus and memory.
THC can impair your cognitive abilities depending on the
dose. Low doses of THC, especially when accompanied with
CBD, greatly reduces the occurrence of impairment. Both
work together kind of like really great sisters (shout out to
my sister, whom I have a dream relationship with). Let’s say
I’m THC (as I am the more ‘out there’ kind of sister), and my
sister is CBD (she’s the more logical one). One day, I take
too much THC and am feeling the effects of a high and it’s
uncomfortable for me. I call up my sister, CBD, and explain
the situation and she’s all over it with bailing out some of the
THC to smooth out my high and bring me back down to
earth. Thanks sister CBD!
There are some situations where avoiding THC may be
warranted; for example, if you are taking a pharmaceutical
that may interact with THC, if you are subjected to regular
drug testing or if you have a family history of psychosis,
schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Otherwise, therapeutic
use of both THC and CBD can be done safely and effectively.
The benefits of these cannabinoids are diverse and support
many conditions within the body.
THC improves sleep with its sedating effects, relieves stress
and improves appetite. CBD supports the immune system,
promotes bone growth, and it’s also an antioxidant, antipsychotic
and anticonvulsant. The overlap benefits between the
two creates a synergistic effect on the body. Both THC and
CBD are analgesic, reduce anxiety, reduce nausea, anti-inflammatory,
antidepressant, and muscle relaxant.
So which one is better? The answer is: the combination of
cannabinoids that work best for you! We are all unique in our
response to cannabis and it takes dedication to the experimental
phase to find the perfect product for you. Cannabis is
a new way of healing. This isn’t your traditional “Dr. knows
best” scenario. This new way involves YOU - your knowledge
of your body, your intuition, your perspective.
How to be 57
Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to offer a new exhibition, How to
be 57 by visual artist Lucie Chan. Lucie Chan was born in Guyana,
and currently resides on the unceded and ancestral territories of the
Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-WaututhNations otherwise known
as Vancouver, BC where she maintains a multi-disciplinary visual
art practice and teaches at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Chan just completed a three-week residency at Oxygen Art Centre.
During the residency she was immersed in installing her large
body of work, How to be 57. The work was created over a six-year
period, and first shown in 2018. The installation includes watercolour
and ink drawings, handwritten text, and textural and found
materials. During her residency she also conducted interviews with
community members investigating experiences of racialized violence,
and in particular, the varying experience of people of colour
and immigrants today. These intimate conversations inspire and fuel
her work.
Critical to the development of How to be 57 was the artist’s conversation
with two women, one a Dutch immigrant in France who
finds herself interrogated in her home despite her innocence, and the
other, an unarmed civil servant who suffers from racialized violence
when her apartment is mistakenly raided. The work departs from the
stories and emotions of these important conversations.
How to be 57 is situated in the historic and contemporary struggle
of the diasporic peoples, of women and of people of colour to find
justice in a world ripe with systemic violence and injustices. A powerful
body of work that both confronts and subdues the viewer. For
Chan this work is a way of honouring the individual who is often forgotten
in the collective experience of being human, and of conjoining
individuals through sharing stories around culture and identity.
Much of the installation is paper-based, which the artist has used
to create scrolls of rich colour and texture, cloud-like forms, passages
of handwritten text and figurative watercolour and ink drawings.
Immersed in her residency, Chan has thoughtfully unpacked
and installed the hundreds of individual pieces of worked paper that
form this body of work.
The exhibition is an immersive experience. A banner-like
installation of text hangs diagonally across the gallery space from
which the artist has attached layers of handwritten text. The tactile
nature of the papers with their yellowing tones and the use of the
ink is reminiscent of the delicate papyrus sheets of ancient texts
such as, the Dead Sea scrolls. Words and quotes from a variety of
sources are written across the sheets of paper, for example, I really
think the range of emotions and perceptions I have had access
to as a Black person and a female person are greater than those
of people that are neither by Toni Morrison remind us that these
issues are not new to society.
To attempt to grasp the multilayered emotions and messages of
this exhibit is a daunting task; however, like wandering in dream
imagery we find amongst the many elements that which speaks and
resonates with us. Several figurative drawings hold the abstract and
textural pieces. They are scattered throughout the installation almost
as if they are hiding waiting to be discovered, for the smallness of
scale does not contain the loudness of their voice, and the pathos
that is at the heart of this work.
How to Be 57 will be on view at Oxygen Art Centre from September
3 to October 1, 2022 on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 1:00 –
5:00 PM. Admission is free. Everyone welcome to attend.
‘Of Light Itself ’ - A RetroPerspective
by Tsuneko Kokubo
The Langham is honoured to present Of Light Itself
showcasing the life and work of the eclectic Kootenay-based
Japanese Canadian artist Tsuneko Kokubo. The exhibition
is a 66+ year survey of Koko’s creative life, including her
earlier art school days to her current works in oils and
acrylics. The exhibit also includes sample video clips of past
choreographed performances and interviews. Curated by
Maggie Tchir.
Showing from September 16 to December 11
Studio 26 Gallery, 2nd floor
from UVIC’s
of Injustice
project,
this exhibit
explores the
dispossession
of Japanese
Canadians in
the 1940s.
The story
follows seven narrators,
illuminating the loss of
home and the struggle for
justice. Learn about life
for Japanese Canadians in
Canada before WWII, the
administration of their
lives during and after the
war, and how legacies of
dispossession continue
to this day.
Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
Teen anglers win new kayaks
Aidan Burt and Roman van’t Land had one of their best
fishing weekends ever at Johnson’s Landing on Kootenay
Lake and topped their haul by each winning a new kayak.
The fishing friends from Nelson each entered trout heads
in the Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program Kids’ Derby,
which awards more than 30 prizes each season for rainbow
and bull trout. Fishing from a 16-foot metal skiff at the Burt
family cabin, the pair landed a bucketload of trout.
“It was amazing day and one of the best fishing weekends
I’ve ever had,” said Roman. “I entered one rainbow and two
or three bull trout heads, but we caught a lot more fish than
that.”
These young anglers really know their stuff.
“At that time of year, the kokanee are spawning and there
are schools all over the water,” Roman explained. “So, I was
using a Len Thompson red and white spoon, because the
white imitates the kokanee a bit more. For that time of year,
it works really well, and you don’t catch the kokanee.” That’s
an important point. The angler incentive program is geared
toward catching as many of the lake’s trout as possible to correct
a predator-prey imbalance with the dwindling kokanee.
“I was amazed that I won,” Roman said. “Aiden’s brother
entered 10 fish heads and his friends entered 15 or so. I just
entered three and I won. Then Aidan won the same prize.” “It
was crazy,” agreed Aidan.
The new kayaks are already getting a workout.
“I took mine out on Erie Lake near Salmo, where I go for
largemouth bass,” said Aidan. “I caught five of them.”
Anglers who are 15 years of age or younger can enter their
rainbow and bull trout catches to win one of more than 30
prizes, including kayaks, fishing gear, Kokanee Zip Line tickets
and Ainsworth Hot Springs passes. Entries will be taken
until September 30.
“This program reduced rainbow trout and bull trout abundance
faster than any other recovery action implemented to
date,” said Molly Teather, Fish Biologist, Ministry of Forests,
Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development
B.C. “In the absence of these predators, kokanee will
likely have a better opportunity to survive to maturity and
reproduce. We anticipate this last year has made significant
steps towards the goal of recovering kokanee and the Kootenay
Lake trophy trout fishery.”
HOW TO ENTER: Anglers must bring an intact fish head
(or full fish for Woodbury tissue sample) to one of four
return depos: Balfour Gill & Gift Gas Station, Woodbury
Resort, Crawford Bay Market, or Wynndel Foods & Outdoor
Gear.
Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program is managed by the
local West Arm Outdoors Club with support from B.C. Wildlife
Federation, Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C., Habitat Conservation
Trust Foundation, Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural
Resource Operations and Rural Development, and several
local merchants from around Kootenay Lake.
Comic Book Storytelling
Storytelling can take many forms from the oral tradition to the written
word. On Tuesday, September 20 at the Nelson Library, budding
and experienced cartoonists from ages 7-100+ can learn to tell better
stories through comics. Cartoonist and illustrator Adam de Souza will
lead two free workshops, one for children at 3:30 pm and one for teens
and adults at 7 pm.
In his workshop, Telling a Story in Four Panels, de Souza will show
kids how to use the classic comic strip format as the basis for telling any
kind of story. De Souza says, “Whether you love manga, superheroes or
Garfield, this workshop will be a helpful reminder of the basics of writing
your own comic!” This workshop for ages 7-12 runs from 3:30 to
4:30 pm. De Souza’s workshop for teens and adults, Beginning with an
Ending: Understanding Your Own Comic”, is all about knowing where
the story is headed. De Souza says, “We cartoonists get so excited by our
cool characters, ideas, conflicts and moments that we forget to think
where a story is headed.” The workshop will include a series of comic
book storytelling exercises to identify what’s important in a story and
help guide the creative process. To register email Heather at hgoldik@
nelson.ca. The workshop for teens and adults starts at 7 pm.
The workshops are sponsored by Vancouver Comics Arts Festival
(VanCAF) to get more hands-on arts workshops and interaction with
working artists to people outside the larger cities. “These workshops
also provide more opportunities for under-served BC based creators to
expand their own impact on the BC arts scene” says VanCAF Education
Coordinator Isabella Laird, “We’re excited to see what people create in
these workshops!”
Adam de Souza is a cartoonist and illustrator. He has illustrated
children’s books such as The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers by Jen
Campbell and The Human Kaboom by Adam Rubin. He is currently
working on his award-winning online comic strip Blind Alley as well
as an unannounced YA graphic novel with Tundra Books
History and hiking combine
Fascinating discoveries—such as remnants of a turn-of-the-
20th-century waterline, log cabin and dam—make the Riondel
Historic Waterline Trail more than a place to walk. By restoring
and enhancing this four-kilometre trail, both history and
recreation have been brought to the forefront.
“With a need for opportunities to maintain health and vitality,
this trail development is an excellent addition to our trail
networks on the East Shore,” says Farley Cursons, Executive
Director of the East Shore Trail and Bike Association, which
oversaw the project. “With the historical element of the trail,
we have already had our local school come out for a field trip.
Every community should have a signature trail and this one,
above Riondel, is one to be very proud of.”
The trail, used in mining operations from 1905 until the
mid-1930s, was identified over 10 years ago by the Regional
District of Central Kootenay as a possible community asset.
However, after the association was asked by locals to clear
downed trees, it realized the trail would also be a significant
safety hazard without major work to its surface and surrounding
area. “Several kilometres of rolled rusty wires and connectors
were beside and under the trail,” says Cursons.
Funding from the Trust and Regional District allowed the
hazards to be reduced, creating a safer experience for users. By
helping residents maintain healthy lifestyles, all while engaging
in the region’s heritage, trail projects like this help the Trust
meet a priority of people in the region: to promote community
well-being. Since 2020, the Trust has supported work on 380
kilometres of trails.
Complete with two major footbridges with hand railings
and three simple boardwalks, the trail can be accessed from
Riondel North Road, which offers a longer, mostly uphill
experience, or the Tam O’Shanter Forest Service Road, with
a shorter hike into the creek canyon, home to most of the historical
features.
The oldest items date back to 1905 when Bluebell Mine,
founded in the 1820s, was revitalized by the Canadian Metal
Company under the direction of Count Edouard Riondel,
president of the French-owned company. To operate the
mill and pumps, located in Riondel, a four-kilometre wood
stave pipeline was built for a gravity-fed system, and circular
flanges, which were rock-bolted to the canyon walls to hold
the suspended pipeline, can still be viewed by trail users today.
Other interesting features hikers can see include the intake
of the old dam on Tam O’Shanter Creek, wooden cribbing,
rock walls and the remains of an old cedar log cabin, named
Tam O’Shanter Hotel by the workers who were stationed there
to maintain the water flow through the pipeline.
“This project has been an amazing opportunity for our
area,” says Cursons. “The Trust grant helped us create our
own unique recreation trail destination that is quickly being
discovered.”
Spirit and Mother Earth
Healing is the act of coming into union with wholeness—the
whole of this universe and the omnipresence of Spirit. Trauma and
grief give us the impression that we are separate from Spirit, which
is magnified by our pain. This fosters a sense of division that is
reconciled primarily through the choices we make along the way.
In the early stages after trauma, we question, “How can there be
such a thing as a holy and wise universe when this can happen to
me? How can both exist within the context of the whole?” This is
a common human struggle, and it might initially leave us feeling
abandoned or neglected by Spirit.
What became apparent to me through time is that we cannot
heal trauma without divine support. As much as we do not understand
why something happened, the perspective and grace of Spirit
is required for us to tackle our soul wounds. We need the omnipotent
point of view of the highest consciousness of the universe to
lead us. This way, the truth—I don’t know what to do, please help
me with this—may be asked, spoken, and written down. This mantra,
this prayer, is needed before you can fully open to what help is
present. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t there before; but when you ask,
you demonstrate to Spirit that you are humble and ready to receive
a higher level of help. Healing becomes a conscious collaboration.
Spirit responds to your questioning through sensations (prompts
in your gut, heightened emotional responses, or a sense of knowing)
that keep you actively participating in your healing. Sometimes
you will receive messages in dreams, symbols in waking life,
or visions from altered states.
When we realize ourselves as part of something greater, we can
surrender our ego and invite this power—which is sourced in
love—to fuel our approach to healing. Waking up to the energy
responsible for the holiness and sacredness of life helps us name
ourselves as holy and sacred. We need to know that what has happened
in our lives is holy and sacred—even trauma.
One of the best ways to feel the energy of Spirit is through your
relationship with Mother Earth. They are interchangeable in their
capacity to guide our healing. Both are necessary. I encourage you
to get outside on the land and lie down upon the Mother Earth—
on your belly if possible—and breathe with her. Imagine that on
your inhale, you can pull the living energy of Mother Earth up
through your body, and on your exhale, you send energy out from
your belly into the earth. Notice the energy of Spirit rising through.
Breathe for awhile and think about your intention. As you breathe,
ask for help.
Sarah Salter Kelly is sharing an inspirational talk at the Langham
on September 29th as well as facilitating a four day Trauma as
Medicine retreat October 13-16 at the Sentinel.
