6 flowers & grapes summer 2022

By the time this issue is published, the Fourth of July is already past, and we have sailed directly into
summer. The wine country is bright and hot. The perfect time for flip-flops, sunglasses, sipping rosé
in the shade, and escaping to a beach or lake. With Google maps and a little imagination, you will
discover fun-filled adventures and a few new places to disengage, relax and play in northern California.
Our issue is focused on summer fun and all of the inspiration of the season in the wine country.
It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing for my husband and me who finally got caught by Covid, which idelayed
the publishing of this issue past on the June drop date of the Summer Equinox. However, by
the Super Moon and King Tides of July, publishing was back on course with an issue as bright and
breezy as a summer day
on the Bay! In the pages ahead,
you’ll find some cool
places to go and some of our favorite
spots for summer
fun!
Go cut some flowers at
Andreotti Family Farms You Pick
Sunflower Field in Half
Moon Bay or take your kids out to
explore the natural
beauty of the season at the lavender
maze at Bees N
Blooms. The wafting fragrance of
14 varieties of lavender along the pathway combined
with the stunning natu-
ral setting home to birds, bees,
and butterflies of the
native habitat, will delight your
kids and grown-ups,
alike.
I’ve gone pickleball’in, gone wine tasting
and gone to the beach! And, there is still
Gardens are bursting in
full bloom with bright colors
time for more summer fun!
along with our favorite
fruits and vegetables, so don’t
forget to stop by your favorite flower or farmstand on your next road trip to the beach or lake. Fruits
of Summer shares how to make an eye-catching edible arrangement with your favorite fruits of the
season. Kari Copple's 7th St. Flowers is a summer must for the most beautiful home grown bouquets.
Just look for her iconic blue and white flower cart on 7th St. in front of her beautiful home
and surrounding gardens near the historic Sonoma Plaza.
In the wine country, a popular pastime is finding the perfect shady spot for sipping rosé. Far Niente
Winery is a tranquil place to disengage, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine under the shade of historic
oaks while taking in the stunning vineyard views of Napa Valley. After a long hot day of wine tasting
and summer adventures with friends or your out-of-town guests, kick back in your garden and serve
up an icy scoop of sorbet to take the edge off a hot summer night.
As it heats up this summer just remember: “it's a smile, it's a kiss, it's a sip of wine ...
it's summertime, sweet summertime!” — Kenny Chesney .
F
ar Niente is an enchanting oasis of shaded woodland gardens
that is the perfect respite to sip wine on a hot summer day in
Napa. You can also escape the summer sun in the cool expansive
wine caves. Far Niente's stately historic stone winery
emerges unguarded from the exquisite surrounding landscape and
sprawling vineyards that evokes a storybook quality. The beauty of the
stone winery upon a knoll can be enjoyed from every angle throughout
the gardens, making it a wonderful place to sip and stroll without care
this summer.
Far Niente was founded in Oakville, California in 1885 by John Benson, a
forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American
impressionist painter Winslow Homer. Benson hired architect Hamden
McIntyre, and together they worked to create an exquisite oasis in western
Oakville. The winery's beautiful site with stunning views of the Napa
Valley embodies a pastoral ideal and was then aptly named Far Niente--
an Italian phrase that means "without care." During prohibition, the gates
of the successful winery had to be closed in 1919.
In 1985, Gil Nickel bought and restored the winery and neighboring
property. Nickel preserved the winery's original name and restored the
winery in a three-year labor of love to recapture a bygone era when life
was "without a care." Far Niente's label is now a benchmark producer of
Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon and is known both as
one of the world's great wine estates and as one of the most beautiful
properties in Napa Valley. Wine lovers and garden enthusiasts will be
captivated by this charming, rustic storybook setting complete with some
of the most stunning vineyard views of Napa Valley.
Stunning views of the vineyard from
the woodland garden at Far Niente.

Shaded under historic oaks, Far Niente's gardens and patios make a
beautiful summer spot to enjoy a glass of wine. Groves of towering redwoods,
acacias, dogwoods, century-old cork oak trees, and a winding
road that leads to the winery populate the woodland garden. The winding
paths and sparkling ponds of the gardens make the winery perfect
for strolling and escaping the hot summer sun. Although, the winery's
landscape offers visitors moments of seasonal interest throughout the
year.
In the Spring, the garden is celebrated by many for its thousands of
southern azaleas with vibrant hues of red and pink sprinkled throughout
its verdant winding paths. Spring also offers beautiful displays of colorful
blooms and canopies of blossoms throughout the season. Tulips, lilies,
and hyacinths punctuate the landscape with their bright colors. Grazing
sheep among the vines and surrounding hillsides add to the pastoral
scene. The herd of sheep also serves a beneficial role in consuming the
native grasses before they turn golden and dry to reduce the fuel and
threat of summer fires.
Fall harvest is announced with the luminous seasonal display along Acacia
Drive, the road leading to the ornate entry gates of the winery. Visitors
come from far and wide to see this vibrant show of fall color each year!
Over 100 Autumn Gold ginkgo trees with branches of bright yellow leaves
create a gently curved allee along Acacia Drive. This allee aglow in the afternoon
light is one of the region's most spectacular displays of fall color
and should not be missed! By Winter, the branches are bare. A peaceful
quiet blankets the stunning landscape of dormant vines in the surrounding
vineyard and Napa Valley.
From world-class wine tasting experiences to stunning gardens and patios
with fantastic vineyard views, Far Niente is one of the most beautiful and
enchanting wineries in Napa Valley and a wonderful place to visit any time
of year. Garden enthusiasts and wine lovers can sip and stroll the gardens
"without a care" any time of year. However, summer offers a refreshing
break to enjoy the shade of the stunning verdure canopies and sprawling
vineyard views. Please check the website to make reservations for wine
tasting and coming events this summer.
Car lovers should not miss the vintage car collection of Gary Nickel who
was a committed car enthusiast, motorcyclist, and vintage racer. He and
his wife Beth created an amazing “toy barn” to display their vintage cars.
Dubbed "Gil's Place," this is not a museum, but rather the Nickel family's
personal collection of amazing and eclectic vehicles.
The star of the collection is Nickel's Vignale-bodied '51 Ferrari 340 America
roadster. But other items include a Corvette, Ferrari, Bentleys, a Porsche,
and even a wooden boat.
Far Niente certainly has charms for everyone. You can find Far Niente winery
raphic, bold organic prints give these cool tote bags a fresh modern
look. Poolside or at the pickleball courts, these chic bags give you some
summer style while carrying your towel, paddles, and outdoor gear.
Created by Susan Story for SuzeQ Designz, these bags are simply constructed
with traditional web handles. “Anyone can make these,” said Susan, who
learned to sew many years ago from her mother-in-law. “I started making them for
friends and now get orders from vendors and my community.” Though simple in
design and construction, these totes are all about the prints. “I love graphics and
color,” said Susan during our visit to her Lucas Valley home studio, where we did
the photoshoot. “I collect unusual fabrics during my travels, and often use many recycled
fabrics in my sewing projects, from old curtains to coverlets.” Susan’s gift is
an artful eye for modern design, from her sewing projects to her lovely home’s interior
and exterior landscape design. “Sewing to me is a practical art ...and I love that
you can wear or use what I make in everyday life.” For special orders, direct message
are by special order with pickup from her home located in the heart of
Sonoma.
The iconic light blue and white flower cart can be found at the corner of 7th St.
East and MacArthur Street in front of Kari Copple's lovely residence. Her home,
Kari Copple is an extraordinary gardener with two acres of property surrounding
her home. For over 20 years, Kari developed her gardens and expanded them to
include a flower farm. She wanted to grow more flowers and varieties to share
with others. Kari is involved in every aspect - from planting the seeds to tending
and harvesting flowers, to bundling bouquets and designing her stunning arrangements.
She has also created a fantastic online community of flower lovers
who follow her garden and farming adventures. She even developed a local network
California, south of San Francisco.
While tending her flower cart, Kari often connects with neighbors and tourists
She recently posted to Instagram, "Access for the disabled is a subject I rarely
talk about, but as we come to the end of National Disability Pride Month and the
32nd anniversary of the ADA this week, I feel it's important to celebrate what has
Seasonal Celebrations

Fruits of
Summer
S
ummer bounty from your garden or local farmers
market can make a show stopping arrangement
for your summer buffet table. Slices of watermelon
and cantaloupe placed with stone fruits,
grapes and halved figs make an awesome alternative to
flowers when decorating your summer tables.
A three-tiered silver tray gives height to the arrangement
while offering shallow trays to present the fruit. Mix and
match the beautiful fruit to create contrast and pops of color
like the bright green grapes next to the red grapes. Alternating
sliced or halved fruits adds to the visual interest.
Blushed peaches and apricots are great companions and
add deep rich tones to the arrangement. It is so simple and
