extraordinary life and from our point of view
one area is of great interest, her time in the
Auxillary Territorial Service.
As Princess Elizabeth, at the age of 18 she
was the first member of the Royal Family to
MOTs
IN THE POST-PANDEMIC ERA
Bill Fennell, The Motor Ombudsman’s
Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director,
looks at some of the key factors affecting MOTs
in the post-pandemic era.
MOTs have been a staple source of revenue and footfall for garages
and workshops since the 1960s. However, with the recent decline in
new car registrations and changes brought about by the pandemic,
this is all having an underlying impact on the short and longer-term
trajectory for MOT demand.
Some of the key factors influencing the testing sphere for the
remainder of 2022 and beyond, are as follows:
New car registrations have fallen by around
two million since 2019
The pandemic and ensuing parts shortages have led to a decline in
annual UK new car registrations. In 2019, it was 2.3 million, in 2020
this dropped to 1.63 million, and to 1.64 million in 2021. The latest
figures for August 2022 year-to-date show a similar picture in that
new car registrations in the UK are 35% down on 2019 at about
983,000, and are forecast to end the year once again at around
1.6 million. The result of this is a combined drop of circa 2.1 million
registrations over a three-year period relative to the annual figure
seen in 2019 and before.
The effect of this is that, between 2023 and 2025, MOT stations
will see a corresponding fall in throughput in three to six-year-old
vehicles requiring their test. On the assumption of a maximum
chargeable figure of £54.85 per test, this equates to potential lost
revenue of around £115 million for businesses nationwide, which is
not an insignificant sum.
Recent industry estimates point to a slight increase in new car
registrations to nearly 1.9 million for 2023, as the automotive sector
continues to grapple with the strain of the cost of living crisis and
ongoing semiconductor chip issues. On a positive note however,
this means that footfall at MOT stations could start making a small
recovery in 2026.
Electric vehicle (EV) ownership is increasing
As with hybrids, pure electric vehicles (EVs) have witnessed a
notable growth in popularity in recent years. For example, in 2019,
37,850 new pure battery electric vehicles took to UK roads, a 144%
increase on the year before. This has since jumped to 108,205 in
2020 and to 190,727 units in 2021, with close to 137,500 already
registered in the first eight months of 2022. This means that,
EVs from the “class of 2019” will require their first MOT this year,
although in small numbers. From 2023 onwards however, a larger
proportion of battery-powered cars will require an MOT, and we
expect this trend to continue going forward.
Staying on the subject of EV MOTs, it has been interesting to
read that, following a recent analysis of 50 million Driver and
Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) testing records for the period
2019 to 2021 by two separate organisations, the jury remains out
as to whether EVs are in fact, more or less likely to fail their first
MOT compared to petrol, hybrid or diesel models. One school of
thought is that, because EVs are subject to fewer checks than their
internal combustion engine (ICE)-propelled counterparts – due to
the absence of emissions and other components, such as catalytic
6 THE GARAGE
6, 7 Industry Insight TMO.indd 1 15/09/2022 11:45

INDUSTRYNEWS
converters and diesel particulate filters (DPFs), there is a greater
chance of an EV passing. This can be viewed as a positive for
consumers, but it may have parts and labour implications for MOT
stations.
On the other hand, there is a view that EVs are less likely to pass
an MOT versus hybrid and petrol models, because they are generally
heavier, meaning a heightened level of wear for parts, such as
brakes and tyres. It may also be that, as electric vehicles have fewer
moving parts, they will make less visits to workshops over their
lifespan. The effect of this could be a diminished opportunity for
garages to identify any potential defects, and a possible heightened
chance of failure by the time vehicles go back for their MOT.
From a profitability perspective – if there are less failures within
the expanding EV parc, this could mean a reduced level of work
available to MOT stations, and a diminished opportunity to drive
revenue from replacement parts. However, if there are more, this
may have the reverse effect.
Regardless of where you stand on this subject, and as more MOT
test data becomes available, it is likely that an industry consensus
will be reached as to how EVs ultimately stack up against more
“traditional” powertrains and hybrids in terms of annual MOT pass
rates.
Periods of peak MOT demand have shifted
Traditionally, before the pandemic, MOT stations were at their
busiest during March and September, the two months of the year
where there is a change in the number plate series. However, with
the introduction of the government’s six-month exemption for cars
which had MOT certificates expiring between 30th March and 31st
July 2020, this meant that vehicle owners could delay the test to
later in the year or into the early part of 2021.
The resulting impact is that the autumn is now one of the peak
and busiest testing periods of the year. For example, DVSA forecasts
show that October 2022 will see nearly 14% or around 357,000
more MOTs expiring than a “typical” October (i.e. pre-pandemic
in 2019), with November due to witness a rise in MOTs expiries
of nearly 28% - equating to a jump of approximately 623,500 to
around 2.9 million vehicles.
With the newly-shaped peak and trough cycle for MOT demand
here to stay for the foreseeable future, garages need to plan ahead
to accommodate yearly upsurges. Bringing cars in before their
actual expiry date thanks to the month minus a day leeway, and
being adequately resourced in terms of staff (which is not a simple
solution in an era of technician shortages), are just some of the
steps that could be taken to help ensure that demand is smoothed
out when the pressure on MOT stations increases.
Older vehicles will be seen on the nation’s ramps
Due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, the latest motor industry figures
for 2021 show that the average age of cars on UK roads has risen to
a new high of 8.7 years, which is over a year more than when figures
were reported around a decade ago (i.e. 7.6 years old in 2012). This
means around 8.4 million cars i.e. just under a quarter of those on
the road, are more than 13 years old, having been in service since
2008.
As a result, up until the point where new car registrations stage
a recovery to the levels seen in 2019 and before, which may not be
in the short term, due to the aforementioned parts shortages, the
cost of living crisis coupled with a pending recession, MOT stations
will see a far greater proportion of older vehicles coming in. This
will therefore have a bearing on pass and failure rates, and the
number of cars needing replacement parts to ensure continued
roadworthiness.
Required investment may impact testing capacity
With a greater number of EVs set to come into garages for MOTs
alongside hybrids, testing capacity will be dependent on businesses
ensuring they have the right equipment, and that employees have
the correct knowledge and expertise to safely work on EVs. Our
recent summer service and repair survey of garages and workshops
showed that, encouragingly, nearly half (45%) of businesses are set
to upskill their technicians to accommodate hybrid and electric
cars. This of course carries a cost implication and possible time
out of the business. On the other hand, there is a sound argument
that investing now for the future will bring a return, as consumers
migrate to EVs in preparation for the government’s new petrol and
diesel car sales ban in 2030.
In summary…
The pandemic, new car registrations, the current economic
climate, as well as a gradual shift away from internal combustion
engines to battery power, are all impacting the MOT testing regime
and demand this year and going forward. Therefore, adaptation
to an evolving environment, as well as investment in equipment
and training to accommodate electrified vehicles and changing
technology, will prove key factors for businesses to stay ahead of
the curve.
TOWSHOW
ZPN
Energy
The Garage speaks to Mark Sanders-Barwick, Head of
Business Development to new Recovery Tow Show exhibitor,
ZPN Energy, reflecting on where they are as a business and
why they are attending the Telford International Centre for
the industries event of the year.
Stand B235
EV Charging, an interesting market to be involved with,
where are we at in regards the development within the
marketplace as of today?
We are at a standing point in terms of development, there is
currently a lot of misinformation around in regard to charging,
a lot of the larger networks are pushing faster charging
continuously, including ultra-rapid chargers that are being
quoted as being able to charge at 150kw plus, however, this
isn’t always the case.
Even though faster chargers are being installed, the grid
simply can’t cope with the demand that these charges are
trying to pull through.
Do we have the capacity to cope with EV charging
moving forward?
That, currently, is the elephant in the room that nobody wants
to talk about, especially the energy distributors and network
operators.
Are we moving towards a solution?
ZPN have had a solution now for some time, which is to have
battery storage between the energy supply and the charging
heads. That means you have a buffer of stored energy that
doesn’t put a strain on the grid when vehicles are charging. Our
HUBZ chargers can be connected in series as well, and these
can have additional, inbuilt batteries within the street side
charging unit to provide further resilience and ensure that they
will always output energy at the highest possible rate.
These connected HUBZ chargers can load balance,
effectively sharing their stored power between them, so if the
main energy storage is depleted, it can be trickle charging from
the grid whilst the chargers connected in series share their
stored power between them. This provides advantages over
other normal DC chargers too.
The majority of Rapid EV charging stations connected to an
AC supply will deliver power suited to the rate of the slowest
charging vehicle. So, if you have a Porsche Taycan charging next
to a Nissan Leaf, the Porsche will charge at the same speed
as the Nissan. Even though it potentially can charge much
faster. Our smart, load balancing Hubz chargers delivery the
appropriate amount of charge to each individual vehicle.
Where are ZPN at in the market and how exciting is
your future?
We’ve taken learning from the development of our street side,
battery storage enabled charge system and put this into a
mobile solution deliver EV charging to a vehicle wherever it is
needed. This was first tested at Heathrow in 2018 and further
tested at MIRA for charging depleted EVs on their test track.
We now have a compact, portable system that can provide
significant amounts of stored energy at Rapid Charging speeds.
This of course brings in the vehicle recovery industry,
which is appropriate as you head towards your first Tow
Show, what are you showing the industry in Telford?
We will be highlighting our ZapMe 50kWhunit at the Tow Show,
which is perfect for use in roadside recovery where EVs have
run out of charge. the operator pulls up with one of our units
and can give 10-20 miles worth of charge within 5 minutes
allowing recovery operators to get stranded vehicles off of
motorways or main roads as a matter of urgency and enable the
EV driver to fully charge at a safe location.
And the roadside charging on a motorway, how safe
can that be?
Our cables are fifteen metres in length, so the recovery
operator can park the required eight metre distance from any
stranded vehicle to act as a safety barrier and the occupants
8 THE GARAGE
8,9 News ZPN.indd 1 15/09/2022 14:48

TOWSHOW
can be behind the crash barrier leaving the operator to work
in a safe environment, taking the charge cable around on the
inside of the stranded vehicle without the need to go into live
lanes.
How important is it to build the relationships with the
recovery industry?
We have spoken with many in the industry, the demand isn’t
quite there yet for EV specific recovery patrol vehicles. We
have had conversations with one of the major operators
and at the moment they can’t justify a whole fleet of ZapMe
equipped patrol units.
When do you see that crossover point coming?
With the rapid adoption of EVs in the UK at present, we would
see that coming within the next 2-3 years.
Garages and Service Centres should also now be
looking to add your product to their armoury too?
Yes, especially as it also opens up different opportunities to
them. A lot of Garages located in remote areas, for instance,
may have clients that have made the transition to EVs but
they don’t yet have suitable charging infrastructure close
to them and maybe no charging station for maybe 10-15, or
even twenty miles. That gives the Garage owner the chance
to provide an energy on demand service using our ZapMe
solution to take the charge to the customer, maybe even on a
subscription basis.
Imagine If a garage or recovery operator had HUBZ
chargers on their forecourt or depot and are called out to
recover a depleted EV using their ZAPME on a motorway
or main road. They then have the opportunity to direct the
‘rescue charged’ vehicle back to their premises for a charge
and earn further income! If that recovery operator was really
smart, they’d also have Solar PV on their roof, harvesting power
into Energy Storage provided by ZPN Energy. This stored energy
could run the depot or garage. Furthermore, the energy used
in the ZapMe, the van carrying the ZapMe (if electric) and the
HUBZ charger used to charge the recovered vehicle could all be
FREE!
Some locations may even be suitable for using the ZPN Energy
Stores to help support the grid via grid services – this can
create additional revenue for garages and recovery operators
too.
at the Tow
Show 2022
Stand B145
The Garage speaks to David Hall, CEO of new Recovery Tow
Show exhibitor, TotalKare, reflecting on where they are as a
business and why they are attending the Telford International
Centre for the industries event of the year.
You have been in business for 40 years, what is the
success down to?
You can actually trace our history back more than 65 years, but
it was just over 40 years ago that we first started manufacturing
mobile column lifts and supplying them to commercial vehicle
workshops in the UK. Since then, we’ve built our reputation on
supplying quality products and backing them up with reliable
and timely service support. In more recent years, our growth
has been achieved by expanding our product portfolio to
include a wider variety of vehicle lifts, brake testers, testing
equipment and, most recently, tyre changers and wheel
alignment, as well as vehicle pits.
I think anyone working with mechanical equipment accepts
that from time to time you may require assistance, and we
pride ourselves in providing first class engineer support that
gets our customers back to business quickly. In short, we’re
experts at what we do, and are a business that cares.
It’s your 1st year at the Recovery Tow Show and there is
a buzz about Totalkare, what will you bring to the show?
We’re really looking forward to the Recovery Tow Show – we’ve
been supplying and supporting workshop equipment to heavy
haulage and recovery specialists for many years (with customers
including Crouch Recovery, CMG Rescue, K2 Recovery, RS
Recovery, The Mansfield Group, Telescopic Haulage and more)
and are excited to showcase a range of products to those who
may not have seen us at other shows in recent years. For a long
time, our reputation in the marketplace was as mobile column
lift experts but, while we remain the number one supplier of
column lifts in the UK, these days Totalkare is about so much
more than that as I mentioned before.
Naturally, we’ll be exhibiting our cable-free mobile column
lifts at the show, and these will be complemented by a mobile
brake tester, headlamp tester, smoke meter, tyre changer,
wheel alignment, compressor, workshop furniture and our
fully-galvanised mobile column lift – the only genuinely fit for
Tell us about the equipment Totalkare provide and its
importance?
We’re workshop equipment experts specialising in the heavy
duty and light commercial end of the market. For anyone
running a fleet, vehicle availability is crucial to business success
and so the equipment and service support Totalkare provides is
all designed to make our customers’ lives easier.
Whether that’s lifting a 38,000kg recovery vehicle in the air
for vehicle maintenance, or enabling key vehicle testing to be
done in-house (thus saving considerable time and money AND
reducing the customer’s carbon footprint), we offer solutions
to ultimately keep vehicles on the road for longer. And as we
saw throughout the covid pandemic, keeping vehicles on the
road is crucial to keeping the country going.
How does the future look at Totalkare?
I’m really energised at what the future holds for Totalkare. It’s
a great business to work in, with great people who take pride in
what they do. Through this approach and our ever-expanding
product portfolio we’ve grown the business significantly in the
last five years and we plan to achieve even more growth in the
coming years.
We moved into brand new, purpose-built premises in
September 2020 and just two years later we’re adding an extra
floor to our office space to accommodate the increase in
headcount that has been necessary to support the business
growing. With everything now in place, we’re looking ahead to
an exciting new chapter in Totalkare’s history, and I can’t wait to
get started!
TOWSHOW
Autotech Training makes
Tow Show debut in a bid
to support HGV sector
upskilling
Stand A250
Autotech Training is delighted to announce that it will
be exhibiting at the 2022 Tow Show for the first time.
Showcasing its entire training offering, Autotech
Training will demonstrate to visitors how they can upskill
their workforce to future proof their businesses and meet
demand.
Building upon its reputation within the automotive
aftermarket Autotech Training increased its offering earlier
this year to meet the needs of the HGV sector.
Suffering from a technical skills shortage which goes
beyond a lack of drivers, the HGV sector is witnessing a
lack of vital roles including mechanics and technicians.
Couple this with the fast paced adoption of new vehicle
technologies unless training and upskilling measures are
swiftly implemented the skills gap will continue to increase.
One of the biggest disruptions to the sector is the increase
of electric/hybrid vehicles. With all new heavy goods
vehicles in the UK set to be zero-emission by 2040, training
is essential to not only ensure that these vehicles can be
maintained efficiently but to safeguard anyone working
around or on them. Greater awareness on the benefits and
challenges of EVs is also needed to ensure that anyone
towing or fitting a tow bar can do so skilfully and safely.
Autotech Training offer six training courses dedicated to
the HGV sector including IRTEC, REACT and IMI Levels 1-3
electric/hybrid heavy vehicle training.
TOWSHOW
AA hydrogen fuel cell patrol vehicle
to showcase next step in breakdown
vehicle evolution
● Having taken a lead in the conversion to electric vehicles the AA exhibits a new
first with its hydrogen fuel cell roadside breakdown vehicle
● The AA Hyundai NEXO shows how Patrol vehicles will evolve to assist the AA’s
13 million members in the future
The AA takes its next radical step in the
evolution of roadside rescue vehicles
by showcasing a hydrogen fuel cell
breakdown vehicle at this month’s Tow Show.
Its appearance at the Telford event (28-29
September) has major significance. The West
Midlands has been chosen for the AA’s trial
of this cutting-edge engine technology.
Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) use
a propulsion system like that of electric
vehicles, where energy stored as hydrogen
is converted to electricity by the fuel cell.
Unlike conventional internal combustion
engine vehicles, these vehicles produce
no harmful tailpipe emissions. The only
emissions are water.
Team AA has designed the NEXO to be an
operational roadside breakdown vehicle. It
will carry most of the tools, equipment, and
spares that you would find on the rest of
their yellow Patrol fleet.
It will be targeted at breakdown jobs in
ultra-low emission areas that require fixes
rather than tows. The vehicle will begin its
operational service in the Midlands area
working in and around Birmingham’s clean air
zone (CAZ).
The SUV-type vehicle has a fuel cell
system that combines oxygen and hydrogen
to create a flow of electrons that powers
the electric drive motor and charges the
1.56kWh high voltage battery.
The NEXO can fuel up in just five minutes
and has an impressive range of 414 miles
(WLTP) which is more than enough for city
work.
Edmund King, AA president, said: “The
discussions about carbon reduction and
zero-emission vehicles have tended to
concentrate on Battery Electric Vehicles
(BEVs). At the AA we are investing in electric
vehicles but believe that there will be a role
for hydrogen and possible synthetic fuels
in the future. Hence, we want Patrols to
pilot this hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to see
what lessons we can learn. We are aware
hydrogen might be used for the bigger tow
trucks in the future.
“The AA Hyundai NEXO could be a perfect
fit for Patrol work in ultra-low emission
zones so are looking forward to putting
it to work. We accept that the hydrogen
refuelling infrastructure is not currently
extensive, but the 414-mile range makes the
vehicle viable for our needs.
“As part of our ESG strategy we believe
that driving doesn’t have to cost the earth
and we’re committed to reducing our
impact and supporting drivers to do the
same. To achieve this the AA has recently
announced its commitment to become
Net Zero for our own Emissions by 2035,
including our greenhouse gas emissions
generated by our operational fleet which
are the AA’s most significant source of direct
emissions.
“This is an ambitious target, as there isn’t
yet a van in production that can run on
alternative fuel and meet all our needs. But
we’re trialling technology as it becomes
available and investing in innovation that
reduces our impact. We’re also partnering
with others to help develop the tech that’ll
make it easier to transition to electric and
lower carbon emission vehicles.
“As part of this target we are rolling out
electric vehicles (EVs) into our operational
fleets, where we can and trialling other low
carbon vehicles and technology
across our group, like hydrogen
chargers and vehicles to gain learning and
understanding how these vehicles could be
used in the future.
“The launch of our fuel cell vehicle is
another step towards our technological and
sustainable future.”
Under the Spotlight
Motul partners UK’s newest
classic car tv programme
Leading lubricant brand, Motul becomes lubricant partner of Paddock Speedshop
- a new TV programme aimed at next generation vehicle restoration.
Motul used to the forum of this year’s Practical Classics
Classic Car and Restoration Show with Discovery+ - for
which it is official lubricant partner - announce its latest
initiative, as it becomes the official lubricant supplier to a new TV
series - Paddock Speedshop, which aims to put a fresh view on
car restoration as it seeks to attract younger enthusiasts into the
world of classic cars and how to return them to full working order.
Andy Wait, Head of UK Motul PCMO sales said, “This is a truly
exciting new development for Motul. Paddock Speedshop is fresh
- and hugely relevant for our growth in the classic vehicle market.
As people will have seen over the last few years, the Classic
sector is really important to us. Our range of products targeted
at older vehicles has greatly expanded and our partnership with
the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs - together with its
associated partnerships - as well as the launch and development
of our Club Motul concept, emphasise our commitment to this
sector. Now, our close involvement with Paddock Speedshop adds
another key string to the Motul bow.”
Motul is supplying lubricants, coolants, greases and associated
products for the show, together with technical support and
assistance to ensure the optimum results for all of the restored
vehicles as they make their way back onto the UK’s roads and race
tracks. Motul is also providing one of its new, BioClean sustainable,
solvent-free workshop cleaning systems to the Paddock
Speedshop workshop, which ties in well with the overall ethos of
the show.
Paddock Speedshop centres around a small group of twenty
somethings, who bring a number of different vehicles back to full
working order over the course of each series. The programme
is not only aiming at a new generation of potential restorers but
is also seeking to give a modern-day interpretation of what a
restored classic can offer.
UNDERTHESPOTLIGHT
“This is a truly exciting new development for Motul. Paddock Speedshop is
fresh - and hugely relevant for our growth in the classic vehicle market”
The show’s leading restorers are two
23-year-olds: Lucy Busby and Ethan Blake-
Jones, who will be maintaining and restoring a
varied selection of Classics and Youngtimers
- both for everyday road use and also for
competition. Resto-mod is often going to be
the order of the day, but there is no hard and
fast policy as each car will be assessed on
its own merits, so many may well be straight
restorations.
Series Producer, Craig Blake-Jones adds
“We are delighted to be working with Motul
on Paddock Speedshop. Not only do they
have a comprehensive portfolio of quality
products that are already proving of real use
to us, but their outlook is completely aligned
with that of the show. The Motul brand has a
fantastic history but also has that sense of fun
and enthusiasm that fits well with Paddock
Speedshop and that I think will make for a
really good partnership.”
Paddock Speedshop is set to air later in the
year in the UK.
NEWS
BACK IN THE
90’s
By Onkar Chahal
Onkar has a wealth of experience in the automotive industry
including recovery work, engineering, motor racing, and is a master
technician, to name but a few. As well as being an MOT tester, Onkar
currently runs Team Arlington, overseeing businesses offering car
sales technical training, detailing, photography and special projects.
So way back in the 90’s I used to be a parts manager for a
newly set up Express Factors. During my time there I learnt
a new phrase: Don’t discount, offer better value. Essentially
the idea was not to reduce the price of the part you were selling
but offer an additional item for a rounded up price.
I took a phone call from a local garage for a water pump. I
can’t remember the application but I know it was expensive. The
garage owner told me he could get it three pounds cheaper from
his regular supplier so I offered a bottle of anti-freeze if we could
round the price up by about a pound to fifty pounds (it’s in the
90’s remember).
The bottle cost us about a pound but sold for about three. By
rounding the price up instead of down we covered the cost of the
antifreeze, the customer got what he needed to complete the
job and we increased our takings. The customer agreed and we
sold the pump, but more importantly we maintained profitability!
If we reduce the price we’re directly removing our profit, which
means we’re working for nothing. And no profit means no job.
It just becomes a race to the bottom, and there’s no money at
the bottom. By increasing the value to the customer we maintain
our profit as the turnover stays the same. Yes the cost of the
sale increases but it’s better than reducing the price as the slight
price increase covers the cost of what you are adding.
Someone doing the service cheaper down the road? Offer a
summer or winter check for free. It’s almost the same checks but
the customer feels like they have received an upgrade. Or offer
to service their partner’s car for a discounted price. That way
you have taken work away from your competition and got a job
that you wouldn’t have had otherwise. Taking work away from the
competition also makes them weaker.
Similar with car sales, rather than reduce the screen price by
a few hundred to entice them, keep the screen price high and
offer a year warranty opposed to the standard three months.
The warranty would cost less than a few hundred pounds and the
customer has a real tangible benefit.
In both cases you have increased profitability without
discounting the price and still won your customer over. I once
sold an M5 with worn rear tyre’s which he used that as a
bargaining tool. I countered with offering to pay for one if he
paid the other but at the screen price as a used car wouldn’t
necessarily have new tyres. He agreed and the price was adjusted
accordingly, in my favour!
Obviously there comes a time where it’s just not feasible in
which case it’s probably prudent to refuse the sale altogether.
Why work at a loss? Don’t be afraid to say no if it doesn’t work
out for you.
I was back and forth with a customer recently over the price of
a 640i I had for sale. He was starting to irritate with his low offers
so I just cut the conversation short by telling him it wasn’t for
him. It pained me to do it as I hate shutting down a sale but we
were miles away on price. A week later I sold it for asking price so
I was right to say no.
With the cost of living having increased recently combined
with a more informed customer, I just feel some times we’re
pressured into reducing the price as it’s the obvious answer. But
most of the time if we just slow down & think about it, we could
offer a little more, for not a lot more, but get more back.
And we all want more, don’t we?
LKQ Euro Car Parts CEO
offers advice for garages
ahead of peak MOT season
In the second half of this year, MOT volumes
will increase by more than 50%, as a
long-term consequence of the extension
given to drivers in the early days of the
coronavirus pandemic.
September to November will be the busiest
period, accounting for almost a third of this
spike in demand.
And while the prospect of a boom in
demand will be welcome to many garages,
the UK and Ireland’s leading supplier of parts,
services and other workshop solutions has
highlighted some key considerations for those
looking to take full advantage.
Andy Hamilton, CEO of LKQ Euro Car Parts, said:
“A recent poll by the Motor Ombudsman found that 63% of
workshops plan on increasing prices to maintain margin. But what
about labour rates?
“They’ve barely budged across the sector despite costs rising
elsewhere. It’s time for garages to consider modest increases to
protect profits – though of course there is a limit to how much
can be passed onto customers that are already feeling the pinch.
“That’s why making marginal gains in profit and productivity also
has to be a focus for garages. We’re doing everything we can to
support – we’ve been talking about digitalisation for a long time,
and this is where it can really make a difference.
“To give just one example, we’ve invested in enhancing our
Omnipart trade website to help more garages go digital so that
they can save time and keep phonelines free for customers.”
LKQ Euro Car Parts is also helping garages to support drivers
who are facing hardships – recognising that having conversations
about increasing costs might feel awkward in the current climate.
As well as highlighting the breadth of its range of parts –
designed to suit every vehicle and every budget – there are a
number of other solutions the business is recommending, to give
garages and their customers some much-needed flexibility.
One example is Payment Assist, an interest-free, fee-free way
to allow drivers to spread the cost of their bill and pay just 25%
upfront – but where the garage still receives the full amount
straight away.
And for garages, hiring temporary technicians through
Autotech Recruit can be a good way to cope with a spike in
demand, without taking on long-term cost.
Andy Hamilton added: “If managed in the right way, this
MOT season can be a great opportunity for the independent
aftermarket. The key though isn’t just doing the work; it’s making
money from it.
“And while work volumes aren’t in question, the types of
vehicles coming through the workshop doors are changing.
Hybrids and EVs will account for a greater percentage of MOTs
than ever this autumn, which means it’s important for garages to
adapt and upskill as their customer base evolves.”
Autoelectro launches new part
identification initiative – using
WhatsApp!
Autoelectro is encouraging motor factors to take advantage of a simple but effective tool
if they are struggling to identify an alternator or starter motor – by sending images of the
parts to the rotating electrics specialist on WhatsApp!
On receipt of the images, an Autoelectro
expert will be able to help by identifying the
part in question, along with answers any
questions the motor factor may have. If the
member of staff doesn’t have WhatsApp,
they can still send the images either by text
message or by e-mailing sales@autoelectro.
co.uk.
How does it work?
1. Autoelectro advises the user to take a
minimum of three photographs; the images
need to be taken square-on and include
front, side and back of the alternator or
starter motor.
2. The individual composes a message that
includes business name, contact name
and information related to the part, such
as original equipment number, application
detail or engine manufacturer, if known.
3. Send the message and images to +44
7972 804336
4. One of Autoelectro’s experts will give that
person a call within 30 minutes of receipt.
The leaflets are free to download from
the Autoelectro website – www.autoelectro.
co.uk/technical-support – but the factor
must be a website account holder and
logged in to do so. Registering is quick, easy
and free!
Why has Autoelectro produced these
leaflets?
Part number identification can be a tough
and time-consuming task for motor factors,
due to the quantity of references available
but also because of the number of obscure
parts that they might have to track down –
from a Triumph Herald to a Corvette C7, or
something off-highway, like a tractor, boat
or excavator.
With an excellent track record in handling
requests from distributors, generated
by a 36-year database and a wealth of
experience, Autoelectro is a product
specialist in this sector; therefore, it is
well equipped to ensure the motor factor
receives the information it needs and
quickly.
TOWSHOW
This solution leaves motor factors with
the skill to convert enquiries into a sale,
thus leaving their customers with a feeling
of professionalism and an experience where
they know their distributor is an expert in
the rotating electrics category.
Autoelectro UK Sales Manager, Nick
Hood, who has started to communicate this
initiative to motor factors in the field, has
received encouraging feedback.
He added: “This is another illustration of
how Autoelectro is using its pedigree to the
advantage of the motor factor. We hope
our customers will pin up these posters
inside their branch, as it will strengthen the
confidence and communication between
themselves and customer.”
Are you sending semi-automatic gearbox
work to specialists? Do you know that the
latest semi-automatic vehicles are equipped
with easily repairable double clutch systems?
LuK wet and dry double clutch transmission
systems can be found in an ever-growing
number of popular vehicles. They can be
serviced and repaired with just a little bit of
know-how from us, along with the correct
tools and a LuK 2CT repair solution from
your local parts distributor. We also offer an
advanced 2-day IMI certified training course
so you can add double clutch repairs to your
service menu and stop turning money away!
MOTUL’S ACE
NEW PARTNERSHIP
Legendary Cafe
and renowned oil
brand get together
Motul and the Ace Cafe are delighted
to announce an agreement that
sees the global oil company
becoming a partner of the famous motor
enthusiasts rest halt.
The Ace Cafe has long been a favourite
of London Bikers, Performance Car and
Historic Vehicle lovers and, in recent
years, its following has spread far beyond
the Capital. The North London landmark,
located just off the famous A406 North
Circular Road near the Park Royal and
Wembley turn-offs now sports visible
allegience to Motul, with branding visible
from most angles of approach.
“We are delighted to have joined forces
with the Ace, ” enthuses Motul UK Head of
Business, Callum Goodland. “It is such an
emotive name and, like us they share both a
deep passion for Cars and Bikes, and a deep
common interest in automotive history. We
are really looking forward to engaging with
Ace customers over the coming years and
showing them what Motul can do!”
The Ace is one of the busiest places for
automotive enthusiasts, with different
types of vehicle in the spotlight every
evening and often during the day as well.
The new partnership means that Motul will
have a visible presence at many of the Ace
Cafe’s different day and night events - and
Motul staff will often be on hand to give
advice and help with Lubricant issues.
Motul and the Ace also plan to look for
opportunities of other joint projects and
event opportunities moving forward.
The first of these - which will also
mark the public launch of the Ace-Motul
partnership - will be the Ace Cafe Reunion
over the weekend of 3-4th September.
Motul will have a stand on Saturday at the
Cafe in London, before moving down to
Brighton for the remainder of the Reunion,
an event which is expected to attract
crowds of up to 100,000 people.
“The new partnership marks the
coming together of two great names in
the Motoring World,” remarked Ace Cafe
London’s Mark Wilsmore. “Like the Ace,
Motul has a long and fascinating history.
Motul is an innovative brand, as its track
record in bringing new advanced product
to both the car and bike markets shows in
no uncertain terms. Likewise, at the Ace,
we are always looking to new and exciting
opportunities and, with Motul I believe
there will be many of these.”
Six of the Queen’s most iconic cars
Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – who sadly passed away aged 96 – was a keen motorist.
Not only did she serve during the Second World War as a driver mechanic in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service – but she was the
only person in the UK that didn’t need a driving license to drive, due to every license being issued in her name.
So to honour the Queen’s love for all things automotive, the motoring experts at Vanarama.com have created visuals of her most iconic
cars throughout the years.
1. Land Rover Defender
Throughout her lifetime, The Queen owned over 30 Land Rover
Defenders. This particular model has specially added mod cons, such
as heated seats and electric windows – features you rarely find on a
Defender, which normally has a back-to-basics outlook on tech. It was
built specifically for the royal family by Land Rover in 2002 and was
bought by Sandringham, despite the estate typically leasing cars rather
than purchasing them. After the Defender was auctioned, shotgun
cartridges were left in the glove box from a hunting party.
4. Bentley Bentayga
The Queen was lucky enough to receive the first Bentley Bentayga to
ever roll off the production line in 2015, with Bentley CEO Wolfgang
Dürheimer commenting at the Frankfurt Motor Show that they had
“reserved the number one car for her”.
At the time of production, the Bentley Bentayga was the fastest SUV
ever produced, and this particular model came equipped with a full list
of mod cons. For example, the interior boasts leather seats with feature
stitching and a quilted diamond design.
2. Bentley State Limousine
The Bentley State Limousine comes equipped with security features that
one would expect the royal family to enjoy. Armoured bodywork and
glass protect the occupants inside the cabin of the car from external
threats, while internally, the car is completely air-tight to guard against
potential gas attacks. The car also comes equipped with a blast-resistant
chassis and Kevlar-reinforced tyres.
5. Daimler Double Six
Although the royal family no longer owns this car, it has a rather special
feature which meant we had to include it. The Daimler Double Six was
auctioned by Sotheby’s in 2019 and fetched around £80,500. The car
boasted an interior finished in parchments and a specially manufactured,
full-length bench seat, installed to make journeys more comfortable for
the Queen’s three corgis.
The car was manufactured with no rear headrests or seatbelts.
For security purposes, a blue convoy light above the rear-view mirror
enabled security systems to recognise the car more easily at night.
3. Aston Martin DB6 Volante
The Aston Martin DB6 Volante was bought by the Queen and Prince
Philip as a gift to Prince Charles on his 21st birthday. Famously said to be
“powered by wine”, the car uses around four and a half bottles of wine
for every mile it travels, after the Prince converted it for bioethanol in
2008 to be kinder to the environment.
On converting the car, the Prince said, “At first, the engineers weren’t
convinced that the conversion would work, but I insisted that it would.
When the conversion was done, they had to admit that the car now
performs better than ever.”
The car was also used as Will and Kate’s going-away car during the
royal wedding.
6. Jaguar Daimler V8 Super LWB
The Jaguar Daimler V8 Super LWB is a specially built model used to drive
around Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. At the time of the car
being auctioned, Her Majesty managed to rack up around 15,000 miles
on the odometer over their ownership of the car.
It has a factory-adapted armrest to hold the Queen’s handbag, and
several extra switches to operate the windows from either side. The
interior of the car was specifically made with no cigarette lighters and
the ashtray was converted into a security lighting system. In the boot, the
car has a direct line to Downing Street for instant communication.
NEWS
10 Years in business,
time to mobilise the future
Team Valley Service and MOT Centre, based in Gateshead, is celebrating a decade in
business this year, and the achievement has not gone unnoticed by Managing Director,
Marvin Campbell who started the business from scratch.
Now one of the largest centres in the
Nort East, Campbell commented
on the success, saying “We are built
on customer service and loyalty, when we
started the business, our attitude was always
to say yes, we can do that, then we would
figure out how we would offer that service,
yet still at a reasonable price.”
“Our customers are key; we are loyal to
them, and we are very fortunate to receive
that loyalty back in return with continued
business. One of our philosophies is to
maintain and service the vehicles to avoid
issues rather than firefight when breakdowns
happen. This saves the customers time
and money and ensures we know a large
percentage of our work schedule three
months in advance, giving the vehicles the
time needed”
Looking towards the future, the business
is already diversifying into new technologies
with the introduction of the CAN-PHANTOM
immobiliser service, which includes adding
two new full-time staff to the team of 20
people across two sites, and an additional
specific branded van.
Marvin added “In business you should
never stand still, and when we met the team
at CAN-PHANTOM, they really did take us
aback, we have seen car security always
being top of the agenda, but with very little
actual prevention measures taken, we see
more solutions that are a cure to the vehicle
going missing.”
“But the CAN-PHANTOM immobiliser
means the vehicles are much harder to be
taken in the first place, we deal with most
industries you can think of, from emergency
services to couriers, from taxis to food
delivery and also plenty of chauffeurs, all
whom without a vehicle for a day seriously
effects their income. An income that nobody
can afford to lose with the current cost of
living crisis of course.”
“A relatively small investment of just under
£400 for the immobiliser can actually make
you money and save you time, insurance
companies will also begin to look at the
CAN-PHANTOM as well, and when fitted, will
save you money per year.”
“As a vital part of our future strategy we
have added two full time staff purely for
the system and taken on a new van which
we have branded, working in partnership
with Steven Stone and the team at the
manufacturers in Stafford means we are
working hard to eliminate a problem one
vehicle at a time.”
Steven Stone MD of CAN-PHANTOM added
“When we visited Team Valley, we were really
impressed by both their sites, the body shop
was so innovative and inspiring, yet with so
much potential for expansion, and when
we went to the MOT and service centre, we
couldn’t believe our eyes, Marvin certainly
has advanced technologies in his sights, so
we both believed the CAN-PHANTOM was a
natural fit from almost the first conversation”
“As we spoke over time, Marvin’s plans for
our product actually took us by surprise,
when launching a new product, it is always
a scary yet exciting time, and to find
somebody with as much enthusiasm as
you and willing to invest into the project
was a match made from the start and has
developed, the time and investment has
proved fruitful for all involved, but most
importantly, the customers who have
them fitted, it is heart-breaking when a
vehicle is taken and can have devastating
consequences for a few weeks.”
“Our network of installers continues to
grow, and our product awareness really
is exploding every day. All we are trying to
achieve is to keep your vehicle, that you
have invested in and means so much to you
and your family, at your rightful place safely.”
RIGHT OR
Electric vehicles are more likely to fail
MOTs than petrol and hybrid vehicles,
finds BookMyGarage.com
● New research by BookMyGarage.com shows electric vehicles have higher
MOT failure rates than equivalently aged petrol and hybrid vehicles
● However, diesel vehicles have the highest MOT failure rate
● DVSA data shows 76,000 electric vehicles were MOT tested in 2021, a
36% increase on 2020 and a 68% increase on 2019
● BookMyGarage.com urges EV drivers to book MOTs with garages
equipped and trained to work on electric vehicles
Electric vehicles have higher MOT
failure rates than equivalently aged
hybrid and petrol vehicles, new
research by BookMyGarage.com has found.
The DVSA data1, obtained via Freedom
of Information request, showed electric
vehicles have a MOT failure rate of 11.4%
for three-year-old vehicles, which rises to
21.8% for six-year-old vehicles.
At 11.2%, three-year-old hybrid vehicles
are marginally less likely to fail but six-yearold
vehicles are some 29% less likely to fluff
their MOT than EVs.
Petrol vehicles have a failure rate of 10.7%
after three years, meaning they’re 6% more
likely to pass than electric vehicles of the
same age.
The study by the MOT and servicing price
comparison site found diesel vehicles to be
the worst performing fuel type, with 15.1%
of three-year-old vehicles failing. However,
six-year-old diesels shared a similar failure
rate to electric vehicles at 21.4%.
Initial MOT failure rates of Class 4 vehicles aged
three to six years old
“One of the benefits of driving an electric
vehicle is the reduction in maintenance
required,” said Karen Rotberg, Co-founder
of BookMyGarage.com. “Service intervals
are typically longer than the interval for
many petrol or diesel vehicles, and fewer
components or fluids need replacing during
the service itself. However, this doesn’t
mean electric vehicles are immune to
safety defects. In fact, because electric
vehicles are generally much heavier than
vehicles with internal combustion engines,
wear on some components – such as tyres
– can be greater.”
Tyres are responsible for 22% of all
electric vehicle MOT failures, compared to
just 12% for all fuel types.
“With electric vehicles requiring less
maintenance, it’s likely they’re making
fewer visits to workshops, which means
fewer safety inspections are being carried
out to check for potential defects. This
data highlights the importance of regular
servicing and safety checks on electric
vehicles, even though their service
schedules are simpler, to ensure any
defects are found before they become
dangerous,” Rotberg continued.
The Freedom of Information (FOI)
request to DVSA also revealed the rapidly
increasing number of electric vehicles
being MOT tested each year. In 2021, nearly
76,000 electric vehicles were tested, a 36%
rise on 2020 and 68% increase on 2019.
However, with 337,0002 electric vehicles
registered in the last three years alone, this
figure is expected to boom over the coming
years and garages will need to be prepared
to take on significantly more MOT, servicing
and repair work on EVs.
Rotberg added, “Our EV servicing
badge helps customers find and book with
Karen Rotberg Co-founder of BookMyGarage.com
garages that are equipped to service EVs.
Consumers should remember that even
if they’re only booking their EV in for a
MOT test, it’s possible that repairs may be
required as a result of a failed test, and this
is where more specialised electric vehicle
knowledge and training might be needed.”
“This data isn’t a reflection of electric
vehicles being any less reliable than other
fuel types, but with them generally making
fewer visits to garages it does highlight the
importance of owners carrying out regular
checks to ensure their vehicle is always in a
roadworthy condition.”
Drivers are advised to regularly carry out
basic checks themselves on components
such as the tyres, lights, windscreen wipers
and windscreen, and keeping on top of this
maintenance can reduce the chances of
failing an MOT test.
BookMyGarage.com recently launched
a new electric vehicle hub, providing
motorists with a comprehensive overview of
electric vehicle ownership and purchasing
advice. It also added the ability to compare
local prices for servicing electric vehicles.
WRONGEV
carwow reveals hybrid and electric vehicles are
more likely to pass MoT tests than petrols and diesels
Exclusive carwow analysis of 50 million MoT tests shows electrified vehicles doing better than petrol and diesel counterparts,
though EVs and hybrids are more likely to have defective tyres.
Hybrid and electric vehicles are more likely to pass their
MoT tests at the first attempt than their petrol and diesel
counterparts, carwow can reveal.
The statistics, obtained from the Driver and Vehicle Standards
Agency (DVSA) via freedom of information request, cover 49.9 million
MoT tests carried out on vehicles aged between three to nine years,
over 2019, 2020 and 2021, and show that just 14.84% of hybrid cars
and 17.87% of pure electric cars failed their MoT at the first attempt
between 2019 and 2021.
The average failure rates for petrol vehicles over those three years
was 20.07%, while diesels brought up the field, with an average firsttime
failure rate of 23.11%.
There are a number of possible reasons for EVs being more likely to
pass their MoT test first time, including the fact that they are subject
to fewer checks as part of the MoT. Petrol and diesel vehicles can fail
for producing excess levels of harmful emissions from their exhaust,
for example, but EVs don’t produce any emissions on the road at all.
Petrol and diesel vehicles are also subject to checks on their fuel
lines, catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters; because EVs
have none of these items, there are simply fewer opportunities for
them to fail the test. One possible reason for the higher rate of failure
among diesels, meanwhile, is that Class 4 vehicles include small vans,
which often live hard lives.
Addressing the impressive failure rate for hybrid cars is less clearcut,
though hybrids are far less likely to fail the MoT test for “noise,
emissions and leaks”. Just 1.29% hybrids that didn’t pass their MoT
test had a failure in this category, compared to 6.46% for diesel
vehicles, and 5.42% for petrols.
Testing times for tyres
But while electric and hybrid vehicles are more likely to pass their
MoT first time, they are more likely to fail for having tyres that don’t
meet legal minimum requirements.
Cars can fail an MoT for more than one reason, but over a third
(36.18%) of EVs that failed their MoT had tyres that didn’t meet legal
standards. Hybrids didn’t fare much better, with 33.24% of all failing
hybrids having substandard tyres. With diesel vehicles the tyre failure
rate was 28.18%, while just 25.94% of failing petrol vehicles had
defective tyres.
One potential reason for the relatively high tyre failure rate for
electric vehicles is the instant torque such vehicles can deploy, which
puts strong forces through tyres. Similarly, electric vehicles tend to
be significantly heavier than petrol and diesel ones due to the weight
of their battery packs, with this extra mass also likely to cause tyre
wear.
New MoT rules were introduced in 2018, so for consistency our
analysis concerns tests from 2019, 2020 and 2021, while we also put
a nine-year age limit on the vehicles whose data we analysed to give
more of a level playing field, as very few electric vehicles are older
than this.
While the number of petrol and diesel vehicles significantly
outweighs the number of hybrids and EVs, this data paints a
nationwide picture of how likely it is a vehicle will pass its MoT based
on what powers it.
Vehicles are consistently less likely to pass the MoT test as they age,
with the worst pass rate in the data being for nine-year-old diesel
vehicles, of which just 65.81% passed their MoT at the first attempt.
Three-year-old hybrids had the best pass rate, with 88.86% sailing
through the test, while three-year-old petrol vehicles were actually
slightly more likely to pass their MoT first-time than three-year-old
EVs.
Commenting on the data, the DVSA’s head of MoT policy, Chris
Price, told carwow:
“We know that overall the MoT failure rate for hybrid and electric
vehicles is lower than that for conventionally powered vehicles.
However, it is important to understand the detail behind that – as
some test items, such as tyres, have comparatively higher fail rates in
EVs.
“There will be many reasons for differing overall rates, including
the relative newness of these vehicles, fewer things to fail (such as
emissions), how the vehicles are serviced and fewer mechanical
parts.”
Price added: “The best way to ensure your vehicle, however it’s
powered, passes the MoT is to ensure it is properly maintained and
that you carry out basic safety checks.”
Almost two-thirds of drivers won’t go
electric until they ‘absolutely have to’
As the cost-of-living rockets, price comparison experts Quotezone.co.uk asked consumers how they
really feel about electric versus fossil fuel cars (petrol/diesel) and which they found most cost effective.
The new survey reveals that 59.3%
of petrol/diesel drivers will only
consider buying an electric or hybrid
vehicle ‘when I absolutely have to’. 26.2%
said they would buy ‘within the next 5
years’, 10.3% said they would ‘buy now /
as soon as is feasibly possible’ and only
4.3% said they’d buy ‘just before the
deadline’ – 2030, when the government
plan on banning the sale of new petrol and
diesel cars.
The research also found that the main
barrier that is stopping people from buying
an electric car is the price, with 35.7%
of drivers saying they are too expensive,
followed by 20% of people who said range
anxiety was a major concern, while worries
about the availability of public charging
points were cited as an issue by 19.3% of
respondents.
Interestingly though, 57.8% of those
with electric cars said they were saving
over £100 per month compared to their
previous fossil fuel vehicle - with 36.6%
saving under £100 per month. Only 5.6%
didn’t believe they were making savings.
When electric vehicle owners were
asked what they didn’t like about their
cars, 24.8% said there weren’t enough
readily available charging points, followed
by range anxiety (20%), broken charging
points (19%) and rising energy costs (18%).
The data, compiled by Quotezone.
co.uk, was taken from a survey of 500
electric and petrol / diesel car insurance
policyholders, completed in August 2022.
Quotezone.co.uk’s Founder, Greg
Wilson, comments: “It’s really interesting
to see what’s holding people back
from going electric and again, lack of
infrastructure and car price, appear to
be the top offenders that are making it
impractical for many to make the switch.
“The hike in car prices is most likely due
to the new car shortage, brought about
by lack of materials and logistical issues
across Europe, causing a spike in shoppers
choosing ‘nearly new’ second-hand petrol
cars.
“One positive point to bear in mind for
those worried about costs is that electric
car insurance is now more readily available
as the majority of insurance providers
have added electric cars to their offering
– making it easier for consumers to shop
around and get a competitive premium.”
Currently only 2% of cars are hybrid
and 3% are electric in the UK. Data from
Quotezone.co.uk shows a small increase in
customers with electric or hybrid cars of
0.2% from June 2021 compared to June
2022 - with the average cost of those
electric vehicles increasing by £5k from
£34,000 to £39,000. The government has
been increasing investment in charging
points, including grants for motorists, as
well as tax relief to help make electric
vehicles more affordable.
SMP Europe
increasing
understanding
EV
Leader in engine management products, SMP Europe, has
increased investment into research and development of
electric vehicle (EV) parts, to produce new references for
the increasing EV aftermarket.
SMP Europe, the home of the Intermotor, Lemark and Lucas
brands, has opened a new garage facility within its
Nottingham-based UK Centre of Engineering with the capability
of stripping electric vehicles to research and develop new
applications.
John Wass, engineering director at SMP Europe, said: “The
new facility enables the wider engineering team to investigate
EVs and research how certain systems perform. Our new garage
facility can find faults with standard equipment and utilise this
new knowledge to develop more robust references for the everexpanding
cohort of EVs within the UK vehicle parc.”
Following the introduction of the new garage facility, SMP
Europe is also set to offer technical training on electric vehicles,
with engineers able to complete work to level 3 certifications.
SMP Europe has invested heavily in its technical and engineering
resource, becoming the trusted authority on engine management,
ignition, and emission products. The engineering team has grown
from four to 16 members of staff in recent years, and additional
investment has also implemented 3D printing to assist in rapid
product prototyping.
The one-stop shop for
certified green car parts
Over the past six years, the UK’s recycled car parts sector has continued to grow. The Maintenance and Repair
sector was worth over £27.1 billion in 2021* - proving that now is the time for a platform which can give auto
professionals confidence of quality when purchasing recycled parts from multiple suppliers. eBay’s Green Parts for
Business platform is doing exactly that, by requiring independent certification from all its recyclers.
eBay is a household name for ecommerce
and have utilised their vast experience
to make the Green Parts for Business
platform the go-to marketplace for
vehicle professionals of all shapes and
sizes to purchase automotive parts
that are top quality, whether recycled
or original. eBay are working towards
reducing critical key-to-key times for
bodyshops and garages, whilst helping to
connect professionals with independently
certified sellers and give warranties on all
bodywork and mechanical parts. Users of
the platform are making cost savings of up
to 70% versus OEM parts RRP.
Laura Richards, Senior Business
Development Manager, Vehicle Parts
& Accessories, at eBay says: “Our aim
for eBay’s Green Parts for Business
platform is for it to be a marketplace that
aggregates supply so that it’s an easy,
one-stop shop, rather than buyers having
multiple supplier relationships to find the
good quality recycled parts they need.”
In eBay’s Green Parts for Business
platform, professionals search through
an extensive range of reclaimed OE
auto parts using either a VRN look up
or through a feed from their estimating
system. This means that parts buyers and
mechanics locate the vehicle part needed
from eBay’s extensive catalogue and view
detailed images of the parts they wish to
order.
The platform was created with
bodyshops and garages in mind, so that
they have a place where they can get not
only a reliable service, but parts they can
trust will reach them in the condition
they expect. That’s why independent
certification was eBay’s main priority
when building the Green Parts for
Business platform. Laura states: “We
listened to feedback from trusted garages
and insurers and found that the warranty
which came alongside the certification
made them feel more comfortable and
gave them peace of mind.”
Buyer confidence in a marketplace is
so important. By requiring the recyclers
to be independently certified, those using
eBay Green Parts for Business have an
extra layer of assurance that the products
they are purchasing for their customers’
vehicles meet the required standards.
Certification allows eBay to set strict
quality control measures for their
recyclers. Different car parts are tested
and valued to a certain grade. This then
makes for a smoother process from
buying the part to being able to correctly
quote the end customer, for both the
part and any work that may need doing
to the part before installation. A process
which is also made quicker and more
efficient by the fact that over 90% of the
parts listed on the platform are available
with next day delivery.
eBay worked with the Vehicle Recycling
EV
Association (VRA) to establish a set
standard for certification. To meet these
standards, recyclers must ensure that
their products are correctly identified,
recorded, tested, removed and sold by
an automotive recycler that operates a
robust quality management system.
In order to keep their certified status,
suppliers must undergo annual inspection
and review to ensure they are still
operating to these standards, as well as
meeting the UK Standard for Reclaimed
Parts from End-Of-Life Vehicles - a
standard which the industry widely
recognises and is owned by the current
leading trade body for vehicle recyclers.
Users of the platform are helping the
planet by using recycled parts, and with
eBay’s carbon calculator on each user’s
dashboard, they know just how much
they’re supporting the environment by
virtue of a simple calculation showing the
amount of carbon the user has offset with
each of their purchases.
eBay Green Parts for Business platform
is available for businesses big and small to
register now as sellers or buyers. When
you register, choose from thousands of
green parts from VRAC certified sellers
for your peace of mind purchasing. Do
your bit for the planet and save money at
the same time.
Partsformachines.com
creating new horizons for the Agriculture Aftermarket
Now with more than a year and
a half of trading under its belt,
Partsformachines.com - the
Aftermarket Online Sales Platform for the
Agricultural and Construction Sectors,
having – exceeded its initial targets is
working towards a future of expanded sales
opportunities through continued growth of
its both its customer and Supplier Partner
bases, and a continual refinement of its
customer journey.
Partsformachines.com (PFM) significantly
exceeded the expectations of its
management both in terms of total quantity
and of average order value during its first
year of trading - and all this with a continued
ongoing excellent customer satisfaction
rating.
PFM has established itself as a serious
player in high quality alternate parts for
major brands such as JCB, Doosan, Kubota,
and Bobcat. In most cases PFM now ranks
in top 5 search for customers looking to buy
high quality parts for their machines – an
incredible achievement considering its short
history.
Partsformachines.com is in the midst
of substantial growth in both its supplierpartner
base and the amount of different
products now made available. Many supplier
partners are now offering a vastly expanded
number of products through the PFM portal
than at the outset.
There is also a major snowball effect:
growing awareness of the Partsformachines.
com offer has sparked interest from further
leading brands who supply into the sectors
it serves. A quick look through the site now
reveals the presence of top names such as
De Walt, Shell, Sykes Pickavant, Castrol and
Draper Tools, joining the likes of wiper blade
giants, Trico who signed with PFM before
Christmas and others, like Yuasa Batteries,
SIP. Astrak, Philips, Top Gear and BYG, who
have been there since the outset. Many
new and exciting partnerships are under
discussion and will be revealed in the coming
months.
PFM has also recently reached agreement
with Rossmore Lubricants – who took over
distribution and marketing of the famous
Gulf brand of Lubricants in the UK – for an
enhanced supplier partnership across the
Parts for Machines platform. Gulf, famous for
its many global firsts in the lubricant and fuel
industry and its iconic sky blue and orange
racing colours, was one of the original PFM
supplier partners, so its return is, therefore,
noteworthy.
Customers of Partsformachines.com now
have one of the widest choices of lubricants
available for the markets it serves - the
Gulf brand’s increased presence will now
complement and enhance an already strong
lubricant product offer on Partsformachines.
com aftermarket platform and there is now a
Lubricant Advisor application, which should
make sourcing the correct lubricant a simple
process for PFM users, whatever their
requirement. This will be even more relevant
as PFM moves rapidly towards providing the
bundled product offers, such as a combined
filter lubricant service package, which have
been requested by its customer base.
Partsformachines.com is also in the
middle of a substantial upgrading of its
entire platform as it gears up both to
handle the greater than expected growth
in customers and to enhance the customer
experience further still.
The purchase and delivery of top line
products directly to the doorstep of and
farmers and construction businesses found a
ready market during Coronavirus lockdown.
PFM’s awareness that down-time costs
money, means that delivering to the door
will make maintenance an easier and a more
efficient, cost-effective process seems
to have found its way increasingly into the
consciousness of people in these sectors.
UFI Filters chosen for the filtration and
thermal management systems for SAME
Deutz-Fahr’s FARMotion engines
l Diesel filter and pre-filter from the UFI Green Farm series reduces environmental impact
l Easier and cleaner maintenance operations thanks to the patented coupling
l Aluminium heat exchanger produced by means of a vacuum brazing process
UFI Filters Group, a leader in filtration
and thermal management, confirms its
position as sole diesel filtration supplier
for SAME Deutz-Fahr, extending its longterm
collaboration to cover thermal
management products as well. The
Italian group, one of the world’s foremost
manufacturers of agricultural machinery,
has chosen UFI diesel filters and heat
exchangers for its new FARMotion engines.
In particular, the products of the UFI
Green Farm range, the GF100 pre-filter
and filter, and the GF1000 pre-filter
are mounted on applications with
FARMotion engines. The new compact
powertrains offer optimal integration
with the agricultural machine, optimised
consumption and noise values, boosted
productivity and comfort levels.
Rinaldo Facchini, CEO of the UFI Filters
Group, says: “We are truly proud to be one
of the reference suppliers for the SAME
Deutz-Fahr Group, one of the world’s
leading manufacturers of agricultural
machinery. This gives UFI Filters Group
the opportunity to enhance its role with
regards to original equipment on vehicles
for the agricultural sector, providing
reliability and a guarantee of the best
engine protection for vehicles that are an
essential work tool.”
The 3- and 4-cylinder FARMotion
engines are available in EU Stage IIIB and
EU Stage IV/US-EPA Tier 4 Final certified
configurations, and now EU Stage V too.
They’re fitted on a variety of SAME Deutz-
Fahr applications such as the flagship
Explorer model, equipped with a UFI GF100
filter and pre-filter, or Deutz-Fahr Series 6,
Series 7 and Series 8 that apply the GF1000
pre-filter.
The primary filters (pre-filters) GF100
and GF1000 ensure the fundamental
function of separating water from diesel,
using filter media developed according to
the exclusive FormulaUFI.H2O technology
that guarantees maximum filtering
efficiency on contaminants from 30 to
10 µm. The secondary filter is for fine
filtration and is developed according to
the FormulaUFI.CELL technology to ensure
maximum filtering efficiency at 4 µm.
Tested and validated in collaboration with
SAME, they guarantee up to 1,000 hours of
work.
The main advantages of the Green
Farm filter range are its compact
dimensions and the firm focus on reducing
the environmental impact of worn
components during the maintenance and
disposal phases.
Compared with the previous spin-on
filters, this complete model allows only
the filtering element to be replaced,
thus significantly reducing metal waste.
Furthermore, the elements are made with
infrared welding, without using any glue.
The patented coupling ensures safer and
cleaner maintenance for the operator,
additionally avoiding diesel seepage.
The filtration system of the Green Farm
range also has an error-proof design. In
fact, it’s impossible to mount the filter
element in place of the pre-filter or vice
versa, thanks to a mechanical safety
system.
SAME Deutz-Fahr has also chosen UFI
Filters for the heat exchanger for KE and
KF engine oil. The UFI Filters model has an
exchange power of 11.5 kW, and stands
out for its unusual production technology
- a set of aluminium plates welded with
a vacuum brazing process and watercooled.
This guarantees greater resistance
not only to immediate high-pressure
values (0-20 bar for 1 million cycles)
but also over time and ensures better
temperature management as well. The
result is increased protection and a longer
working life for the engine, with reduced
consumption and emissions.
Its collaboration with SAME Deutz-Fahr
is further proof of UFI’s ability to supply
complex, high-quality original equipment
modules for a wide range of heavy
vehicles, both on-road and off-road.
New KUHN autonomous
diet feeder launched
KUHN has launched a new self-propelled, autonomous diet
feeder capable of feeding 280 cows. The new AURA works
autonomously using GPS and RTK to move around a farm
collecting and feeding out a TMR. Inbuilt loading and weighing
modules calculate the exact mix of forage material including
grass and maize, along with any supplements and concentrates
required.
The AURA’s 3m3 mixing tank features two vertical augers
that require a lower power requirement and feature KUHN’s
K-NOX technology to guarantee a service life of six times longer
than steel alternatives. The mixing and chopping speed can
be adjusted to create a homogenous TMR with a palatable
consistency.
A 56hp (42kW) diesel engine can power the AURA for up
to a week of continual loading and feeding, making it a truly
autonomous machine.
The AURA is remarkably compact, standing at 2.6 metres high,
1.9 metres wide and just under 7 metres in length. This helps it to
move around most areas of the farm including feed passages and
clamps. It feeds out at a speed of 2km/h on both the left and
right using a conveyor, and can travel at up to 7km/h.
A dual guidance system uses GPS and RTK outside and LIDAR
inside in conjunction with an onboard odometer. Farms choosing
an AURA will be mapped and WIFI devices installed to enable
connectivity throughout. The AURA also has inbuilt sensors to
stop or avoid objects and it can travel on gradients up to 20%.
The TMR can be calculated as often as is needed and uploaded
to the AURA remotely. Its built-in loading and weighing modules
enable it to travel to sources of forage, concentrates and
minerals to load. A multi-purpose milling head ensures that all
forage is loaded efficiently whilst onboard weighing sensors
can calculate the TMR to the nearest kilo. Farms using the AURA
will also be fitted with augers connected to silos containing
concentrates and minerals that have a receiver to communicate
with the AURA’s onboard transmitter.
The time and frequency of feeding can be set to precise points
The new KUHN AURA is a self-propelled, autonomous diet
feeder capable of feeding up to 280 cows
24 hours a day to enable consistent feeding without intervention.
The AURA also features rotating bushes that push up forage and
double up to clean the clamp of any fallen material. The brushes
operate on both sides of the machine to offer the flexibility to
feed in any housing.
The AURA will be distributed initially in France with other
countries in Europe following. The first units are expected in the
UK from 2024/25.
The AURA can work autonomously for
up to 7 days and is guided by GPS and
RTK to be entirely autonomous on farm
Eclipse Automotive
Technology, enter the
Agriculture world
The Garage speaks to Ben Parkin, Marketing Specialist to
Technology, reflecting on where they are as a business
and how they are entering the agriculture market in a big
way, see Eclipse in Telford on September 28th and 29th.
Eclipse are making a concerted effort to enter the
agriculture world currently, tell us how you are
achieving this?
We have been a leader in the commercial vehicle industry for
some time now and many know us for being the go to company
in diagnostics with the Jaltest product, but we are now looking
to expand into different sectors hence the push into the
agricultural market recently.
We are basing this around it being a multi brand diagnostic
product and there is no need to continually go to the dealer
anymore, we are following the same education path we took
with the commercial world a few years ago.
With the product being able to reduce the down time
dramatically, we are saving time for the repairers that are
working on the machinery, as well as the dealer network itself
who work with several different brands. Also, it can be used by
contractors whom work on several different types of machinery
but don’t yet have the inhouse capability to work on different
brands.
By covering so many brands, are you a one stop
solution?
That is our aim, when people think of a diagnostic tool, many
people believe it will just show the error code, however, our
product is a complete repair solution that gives you not only
the error code and pinpointing the faulty component, but also a
trouble shooting guide with a step-by-step path of repair.
The technical information incudes technical and wiring
diagrams, test values and also component locations too, it really
is the complete package enabling the repair to be actioned. In
addition, we also offer technical support to compliment this
service.
Not only does it cover all leading manufacturers, but it
also covers different types of machinery doesn’t it?
Yes, we also offer extended coverage across the board, with
our four database updates a year, it also means we cover
vehicles of all different ages, we are continually adding more
technical information to the system to enhance this.
Of course, we are about to enter the harvest system,
so this is vital to save both time and money, isn’t it?
It is about keeping these vehicles moving, they are huge assets
for the businesses so the time they spend in a workshop means
the farms are losing money. It is not just saving time for the end
user but also for the maintenance company too meaning they
can do more jobs, offer a better, quicker service and increase
their profitability.
Have you managed to provide one to Clarksons Farm
yet?
Not yet, but we are working on it.
What’s the future for Eclipse in the agriculture world?
We are looking to become the industry leader in many different
sectors including the agriculture and farming world, also to
enable technicians to become more efficient at what they do
through our training support and constant innovations with new
products. There are already a couple of telematic products
that we are trialling with commercial vehicles and we will look
to bring these across to the farming industry shortly enabling
remote diagnostic fault finding.
As you mentioned, there is a huge commercial product
line that is relevant too and people can come and see
you at the Recovery Tow Show in Telford, Shropshire a
county that also has a huge farming sector as well?
Yes that is correct, we will be at the Telford International
Centre on September 28th and 29th, our stand number is B390
New twin auger trailed
mixer launched
KUHN has filled the gap between its
PROFILE S and L range of trailed mixer
wagons with the PROFILE M series. Fitting
neatly between the narrow- and widebodied
machines, and aimed at mediumsized
farms, the M series will be produced
from 2023 onwards in five mixing capacities
from 16 to 25m³.
The 20m³ capacity machine has an overall
height of less than 3 metres, making it well
suited to housing with lower access. The
largest machine in the range at 25m³ can
feed 200 cows in a single pass, making it
perfectly positioned for the average UK
dairy herd which is estimated at 212.
Two feed out options are available, a
cross conveyor in the CM model can be
positioned at the front of the machine,
and a chute or tilting slide conveyor is
offered on the DM models. Plus models
are specified with a straw blowing turbine
capable of blowing 158kg of straw up to
18 metres per minute, and all models can
be upgraded by adding a selection of tub
extensions.
All models in the range feature KUHN’s
patented 5 load cell weighing system that
is well suited to both small and full-load
mixtures. This is coupled to KUHN’s unique
C-DRIVE system which, with a 1.10 metre
distribution door, offers fast and wellbalanced
distribution of forage.
The twin augers can be specified with
KUHN’s long-life K-NOX coating. This
increases the life of the auger by up to six
AGRICULTURE
times by acting as a corrosion resistant layer
to protect against the abrasion of acidic
silica contained in forage.
For farms looking to distribute forage
into troughs or raised feeders, FLEXILIFT
can be specified. This tilting cross conveyor
will distribute forage evenly and does not
protrude from the body of the mixer wagon.
20 years for KUHN’s i-BIO+
KUHN has produced the i-BIO+ combination
baler-wrapper for 20 years. Since its release in
2002 it has been continually developed, with the
most significant update being a shift to KUHN’s
patented twin film-on-film wrapping system.
This system reduces wrapping costs and offers a
complete bale-in-one operation.
The popularity of the i-BIO+, and its longevity,
has been largely attributed to how it fits British
farming systems. “With smaller, often undulating
or hilly fields, many farmers have invested in the
i-BIO as an ergonomic, efficient machine, that
can make the most of unpredictable weather
windows,” explains product specialist Rhodri
Jenkins.
The compact combination baler-wrapper
features a 2.3m wide pendulum pick-up unit
with five tine bars and cam-track technology
to maximise crop pick-up and transfer to the
integral rotor system. The i-BIO+ is fully ISOBUS
compatible through the tractor terminal or,
operated via a separate CCI 800 control unit.
The KUHN i-BIO of 2010
The i-BIO+ of 2015
The i-BIO+ can be used with conventional
net binding or film-on-film bale binding and
wrapping to eliminate the need for separate
netting. KUHN’s unique film binding system only
requires two standard-sized 750mm rolls which
removes the need to order separate binding and
wrapping film. The rolls are loaded with ease as
the rollers fold down enabling the 27kg roll to
slide on comfortably.
“Switching between film and net binding
is quick and simple as the two systems are
separate, making it easy to switch from one
system to the other for different customer
requirements,” he adds.
The i-BIO features KUHN’s INTELLIWRAP
system which enables the operator to select
the number of film layers and to adjust film
overlap so that 5 or 7 layers can be applied. The
high-speed wrapping ring applies film at up to
50 revolutions per minute and produces wellshaped,
tightly sealed bales for improved crop
preservation.
New 2023 Yamaha line up
Yamaha has announced a range of modifications and
additions to its ATV and side by side models with
new colours, features, accessories, and technology,
to offer agricultural operators’ greater choice and
versatility.
The new range of Yamaha ATVs has been announced for 2023
The Kodiak 450 and 700 ATVs both offer the option of
Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Diff-lock for greater
stability on uneven ground. Special Edition (SE) specification
models will offer alternative paint colours and all models will
be supplied with a 10-year belt warranty and Datatool tracking
devices free of charge*.
Also new to the range is a revised Grizzly 700 ATV with MKII
686cc engine and upgraded 14-inch wheels. This, combined
with the Grizzly’s On-Command® 2WD/4WD drive system with
Diff-lock, makes it well suited to hill ground and wet conditions.
The switchable drive system is operated using a switch on the
Powerful engines and Yamaha’s Ultramatic® CVT automatic transmission
make the new ATVs suitable for a wide variety of farm work
The 2023 Yamaha Grizzly 700
handlebars to enable operators to move between 2- and 4-wheel
drive as ground conditions change. This coupled with Yamaha’s
Ultramatic® CVT automatic transmission and independent longtravel
adjustable suspension, makes the Grizzly easier to control
and more comfortable on difficult terrain.
A new Wolverine RMAX 1000 side by side model will be
launched in the UK in both SE and Limited Edition (LE)
specifications. Both models benefit from a new VRX 45 winch,
front bumper, interior lighting, dash mounted USB charger, and
will retain Yamaha’s versatile D-Mode selector with sport, trail,
and crawl modes.
The Wolverine RMAX LE is fitted with adjustable FOX 2 iQS
suspension, and for the first time on a UTV this can be adjusted
from within the cab. The LE model features a dash mounted
control to adjust the ride quality based on the terrain. Operators
The new Grizzly ATV features the MKII 686cc engine with upgraded
14-inch wheels and On-Command® 2WD/4WD drive system with Diff-lock
can choose comfort, medium, or firm, with all controlled by a
Bosch ECU and IP67-rated components.
Focussing on safety, Yamaha has introduced its speed
management key technology to the Wolverine RMAX LE. The
key enables owners to limit the top speed to 25km/h without
affecting power. This, Yamaha says, will protect both operators
and machines in conditions where higher speeds are not
required. The key can be removed by the owner to return the
Wolverine RMAX to factory specification at any time.
Yamaha has also extended its commitment to operator safety
by offering free ATV rider competency training from the European
All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute (EASI®) to anyone purchasing a
new Yamaha ATV. This training provides the necessary information
and practical experience to operators, enabling the full features
and performance of the ATV to be utilised safely in all conditions.
WORKPLACEWELFARE
Supporting your employees
through the current crisis
There is no doubt that the winter of 2022/23 is going to be a very bumpy ride, energy price caps rising exponentially
meaning essentials such as food and other goods will also rise. Petrol and Diesel still at highly inflated prices and other
services undoubtedly increasing over the next six months.
This is going to put immense pressure on your employees and
their households, the likes that haven’t been seen for many
a decade and is going to mean employers must take good
care of staff to ensure retention.
The cost of losing an employee that you have paid to be
trained to the skill level needed in the automotive world, could
potentially put your business at risk if you have to repeat the
process with a new team. Since Covid we have seen employee
loyalty rising, but this could soon quickly evaporate if they are
badly let down during the next few months.
Currently the industry is at a cross over from ICE vehicles to
EV, and the cost of training is on the rise as a consequence of
this, so to lose the mechanics that are trained on todays vehicles,
means your training costs for new employees could be doubled
over the coming years, a cost that for many business owners, will
be hard to swallow, if not impossible.
Pay increases will be a major factor, but not the only
consideration for the businesses to take on board, also to be
considered will be flexibility. Many people will be forced to take
on second jobs, or even start their own part-time business just
to cover personal costs over the next few months, this may mean
working times will need to perhaps be flexi time, especially if you
can’t afford to pay the wages somebody needs to survive and
keep a roof over their heads, as an employer, you will need to
By Alasdair Hobbs
Human Results Shropshire
talk them through the options and be open-minded. Failure to do
so will mean losing staff, remember families will do what ever it
takes to get through the cost-of-living crisis.
Also, staff could soon be looking to change jobs very quickly
and handing in the minimum notice period required, this could
leave workshops and service centres short staffed at a moments
notice, especially if it is more than one person leaving during that
time. This would be devastating for many businesses and mean a
dramatic drop of income for the company, with business finance
and support expected to be harder to obtain, this could mean
the business is effectively insolvent and banks could pull the plug
immediately.
With many predictions being that the UK will enter recession
by the final quarter of 2022 and inflation to rise dramatically, it is
vital that businesses take steps to protect themselves and their
staff now, because many experts are already saying this could be
a very sharp decline in the economy, a decline that many can’t
afford, especially after the last couple of years during the Covid
pandemic.
Leading bodyshop supplier appoints
new head of channel to advance
customer proposition
LKQ Coatings, the UK and Ireland’s only complete end-to-end provider for paint,
parts and bodyshop equipment and services, has appointed a new Head of Channel to
help deliver the best possible support, solutions and results for its customers.
Jodie Mullard brings more than 10 years’
experience to the role, having held a series
of marketing, customer experience and
digital positions with companies including
Thomas Cook and PPG Industries.
Most recently, she spent five years with
LKQ Europe, where for the past year she
acted as Director of Digital Customer
Experience, overseeing everything from
product value propositions, centralisation
and execution of the digital portfolio,
through to business model development
and the effective use of data to understand
customers’ needs.
As Head of Channel for LKQ Coatings in
the UK and Ireland, Mullard will manage the
go-to-market strategy and development
of customer first value propositions and
programmes to drive channel performance,
leveraging best practice and functional
relationships from across the LKQ network.
A key element will be the implementation
of a new customer relationship
management (CRM) database. This will sit
alongside an enhanced internal reporting
tool, which will provide real-time insights
into purchasing data and customer trends,
helping the business to plan and adapt
faster to continued changes and challenges
in the automotive sector.
Jodie’s appointment follows that of
Andy Southby, who took over as Managing
Director of LKQ Coatings in November
2021.
Andy Southby said: “Jodie has invaluable
expertise in all things digital and data, and
brings fresh perspective to how we can
deliver the best results for our customers.
She will spearhead a series of changes,
both internal and customer-facing, to
ensure we are leading the way when it
comes to supporting UK bodyshops.
“We know it’s not just about staying
abreast of challenges – we need to be
one step ahead, so that whenever our
customers need support, we have already
anticipated what they’ll need and have a
solution ready to go. Jodie’s role is key to
helping us achieve this.”
Jodie Mullard added: “LKQ Coatings
is already known as the market-leader
for bodyshop solutions, but there is so
much more we can do to differentiate
ourselves in the market, and to provide
our customers with the tools they need to
succeed.
“I’m excited to leverage the full strength
of the LKQ Group, bringing together
excellence in areas such as logistics,
product reach, sustainability, talent
development and data, to enhance our
proposition and ensure we are ready to
listen and adapt to support our customers
today, tomorrow and well into the future.”
Smith brings to MAHLE Aftermarket more
than 25 years’ industry experience, joining
from Ring Automotive, after previously
progressing through the industry in roles
at Exide and DENSO. He will be responsible
for daily management of the national sales
team and working with internal and external
partners to plan UK marketing activities.
“The opportunity to join such a brand
like MAHLE was a huge factor in joining the
team. It’s a company renowned for quality,
which is something that shines through
from feedback from the customer base I’m
now working with,” Smith said.
Povey also brings a wealth of industry
knowledge to the team and has covered
all areas of the aftermarket, with a
strong emphasis on the technical areas
of products, presenting and reporting
on product issues from fitting to
manufacturing.
The new addition to the MAHLE team
will be responsible for maintaining and
improving the aftermarket specialist’s
technical and quality response within the
automotive aftermarket, and will develop
product training to all levels of the market.
He will also provide technical updates
on products on a regular basis to keep
Alan Povey
the industry informed and to stop
installation errors in product categories
such as Thermal, Air Conditioning, Rotating
Electrics and Seals.
