Students prepare to entertain
TE ARATAI students will
present a night of musical
performances next week.
About 40 students have gathered
to organise the school’s
first official music night for the
community since its reopening
at school music event
REHEARSAL: Te Aratai students are rehearsing for their first official music night since the school reopened in May.
in May this year.
Te Aratai Music Night features
18 musical performances,
with year 9-13 students covering
many genres. This is its first
event in three years.
The event will take place in
Te Puna – the school’s 650-seat
auditorium.
Student Connor Armstrong
said the event is a result of
students coming together to
prepare and plan after two years
of pandemic.
“The new school has become
host to an extremely highstandard
of learning - including
specialty programmes within
the music department.”
This free event will run from
6-9pm on September 28.
Study into
alcohol
ban for
Woolston
under way
• By Natalie Pham
AN ALCOHOL ban for Woolston
is being investigated.
City council staff have started
to collect information from
police and council officers working
in the area as a first step to
determine whether a ban can be
implemented.
Photographic evidence of
alcohol-related incidents in the
area and a petition signed by
residents were also included.
This came after the city council
decided to investigate a liquor ban
after concerns about an increase
in anti-social behaviour because
of people consuming alcohol on
the street.
The investigation will take from
one to two months. If there is sufficient
evidence, staff will write a
report recommending the council
consider bringing in a temporary
alcohol ban. However, the report
will be delayed due to October’s
local body elections.
Under the Local Government
Acts 2002, councils can impose
a liquor ban in areas where ‘a
high level of crime or disorder’
has worsened through alcohol
consumption.
If the temporary ban appears to
address the problems, the council
will consult the community about
imposing a permanent one.
In my view a practical approach is critical for
Buses ‘woefully lacking’ in Dallington
• By Natalie Pham
DALLINGTON residents are
asking for more bus options to
combat social isolation.
“Woefully lacking” is how
Dallington Community Trust
chairman David Collins
described the
available bus
services.
There are
currently no buses
going into the area
after 9.25pm or out
after 7.52pm, with
David
Collins
the exception of
Sundays when they
run at 8.22pm and
6.50pm respectively.
The loss of the Orbiter bus
after the 2011 earthquake also
means residents have to wait
30-minutes on weekdays and an
hour on weekends to go to The
Palms.
“Restoring the Orbiter bus
service through Dallington
would help decrease the level of
social isolation,” said Collins.
He sent a letter to the Waitai
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board last week to raise
awareness about the challenges
facing residents.
Said Collins: “There is not so
much things to do in Dallington
anymore. So elderly are feeling
isolated as there is nothing to do
and buses are limited.”
With limited options for
recreational activities, he said
a group of young people had
turned to vandalism and graffiti.
Many stores have had their
windows smashed or scratched,
Collins said.
The community craft shop
on McBratneys Rd has also had
multiple failed break-in attempts.
Said Collins: “We’re lucky that
we have a great graffiti team that
will quickly come out and help
with repainting the wall.”
The team, which started out
in 2008, is part of a city council
initiative to reduce graffiti.
However, the clean up team does
not cover scratched or broken
glass. To bring the community
together, the trust has held many
events over the past few years,
including Christmas hunts and
street barbecues.
About 75 children participated
in its Christmas event last year.
NO RIDE: Dallington residents want the Orbiter bus service
through the suburb restored. Below – There has been an
increase in graffiti and tagging in the community.
HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think Dallingtion
needs more buses? Email your views to
natalie.pham@starmedia.kiwi
The trustees also fund events
that are not covered by grants.
“It’s been getting difficult due
to the reduction in funding. But
we’re not the only organisation
(which) suffers from that,”
Collins said.
He said the other main reason
for the letter was to thank the
community board for its support
and funding of the craft store.
However, it was also a
reminder that the community is
still here and “still have a need”.
Environment Canterbury has
not responded to questions from
the Pegasus Post as to whether
Orbiter bus services through
Dallington will be restored in
the future.
Celeste
Donovan
Councillor for
the Coastal Ward
About me
I am a coastal resident of Christchurch, born and raised, I
love this city and especially our coastal communities.
As a middle child in a bunch of 5 kids, I learned at an early
age, how to strongly advocate for what was important to me.
I have honed those early skills with a Masters’ degree in
international relations and honours in politics and law, and
through work in government.
What is most important to me now, is standing up strong for our
coastal communities as your elected councillor. I feel privileged every
day to represent such a vibrant part of our city.
Kia ora, I’m Celeste Donovan, Councillor for the
Coastal Ward.
Last year you elected me as your Councillor, and I hit the
ground running. I have made strong strides already, and I
seek your vote in the October election because there is a lot
more that I want to achieve for you.
What I have achieved so far
Since my election last year, I have focused on bridging the
gap between Council and our communities by establishing:
• live streaming for Community Board meetings,
• a community advisory group for the wastewater plant
issues
• an Engagement Working Group.
I have got businesses and community groups the
funding they need:
• secured funding for a community centre in Parklands to
help rebuild what was lost after the earthquakes.
• helped coordinate a business support package for those
impacted by Covid
• supported progress on key urban regeneration projects,
such as the New Brighton mall.
What I plan to achieve if re-elected
As an independent, I will prioritise the needs of the city, and
as my actions show, I will advocate for you at the Council
table. My priority goals for the coming term are:
1. Action on climate change. I will help ensure
our communities are at the forefront of decisionmaking
to prepare for climate impacts, and ready to
seize opportunities that arise from investment and
development of a more climate-resilient city.
2. Community engagement and empowering
local decision making. I will work to establish a
citizens’ panel, move our electoral system to Single
Transferable Vote (STV) and have councillors elected
at large across community board areas. I will seek to
empower residents and community boards to equitably
participate in local decision-making and climate
adaptation planning.
3. Developing our local communities and a more
sustainable city
I will work ensure support for local businesses, better
public transport and urban planning and reconnecting
people with their local areas so they can easily live,
work, and play close to home.
‘An alcohol ban is a very blunt tool’
• From page 1
Said Woolston resident Paul
McMahon: “I’m glad that the
council accepted there is enough
evidence and now it’s time for
them to get the right people
around the table.”
McMahon
presented a
petition to
the Waikura
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community
Board in July.
Paul
McMahon
The petition,
with more than
170 signatures
from residents,
was in support of introducing an
alcohol ban.
McMahon said alcohol-related
harm has been an ongoing issue
in the community.
“I am aware that an alcohol
ban is a very blunt tool and is not
a solution in itself. I do not wish
to criminalise people who are
poor and addicted to alcohol.”
Last month, he lodged an appeal
against the decision of the
District Licensing Committee to
grant an off-licence to a liquor
store in a high deprived part of
Woolston.
The appeal came after a group
of residents, police and the medical
officer of health failed to stop
Super Liquor Ferry Rd’s application.
The store is located in a level
nine deprived area.
ACTION: Concerns about alcohol-related harm and litter in
Woolston Village have led to a call for a ban on alcohol.
The New Zealand Index of
Deprivation ranges from one
to 10 and measures the level of
socioeconomic deprivation for
areas. One represents areas
with the least deprivation
and 10 represents those with the
most.
Boutique Christchurch retirement village
recognised for excellence in aged care
The upscale and boutique Ashley Suites care facility
within The Russley Village in Christchurch has carried
off the prestigious Jackson Van Interiors Built and
Grown Environment Award as part of the NZACA/
EBOS Excellence in Care Awards.
The award recognised how considered design,
quality and a refreshed approach to residential aged
care is delivering positive clinical outcomes for its
residents.
This was announced in Christchurch last night at the
New Zealand Aged Care Association (NZACA) and
Retirement Villages Association (RVA) joint Summit.
The Ashley Suites is an elegant care residence
comprising 44 care suites, offering rest home and
hospital level care. Its completion in late 2019 enabled
The Russley Village to fulfil its promise to residents of
providing quality residential care within the village.
The Russley Village is operated by the Generus
Living Group. For Group Director Graham Wilkinson,
announcement that Ashley Suites won the award was
further confirmation that its positioning in the luxury
end of retirement living not only resonated with the
market but, more importantly, was investing in the
wellbeing of residents.
“With Ashley Suites we sought to provide a care
offering and environment that was exceptional in the
market. We focused on creating a beautiful residence
from which tailored and meaningful care could be
given. We are delighted that this approach has been
recognised by the industry and is reflected in the care
outcomes of our residents. The Ashley Suites offers a
personalised care approach uniquely overlaid with a
quality hospitality offering.”
Wilkinson said Generus set out to craft villages
that reflected their unique location and which enabled
residents to retain their individuality. “I believe with
Ashley Care Suites, and, indeed, The Russley Village, we
have achieved that.”
The stunning architecture of the care facility has
been seamlessly integrated with the urban fabric of the
broader village. The care facility residents of Ashley
Suites enjoy the extensive amenities on offer within the
wider village, including activities in the village pool,
time in the garden or enjoying a restaurant experience
with friends and family.
Spaciousness is a feature of the care suites, with a
fully accessible ensuite bathroom and a kitchenette with
a refrigerator and microwave to enable personalised
and convenient light refreshments for residents and
family. Individually controlled air-conditioning and a
55in television add to the impressive amenity on offer.
Aligned with the village’s upscale hospitality offering,
residents of Ashley Suites enjoy a quality dining
experience, supported by a dietician-designed gourmet
menu and daily social hour.
A private lounge area on the upper floor provides
both residents and families a place to congregate,
both for social engagements and also for respite and
reflection. On the first floor, a dedicated salon and
wellbeing suite allow residents to be pampered and
groomed while maintaining dignity in the privacy of
their residence.
All residents can access an in-house physiotherapist,
podiatrist, dedicated general practitioner, hair salon,
Raised garden beds allow residents to actively or
passively engage with the garden, adding meaning and
purpose to their days.
“I’m proud to say we have created an environment
which enhances a resident’s feeling of independence,
freedom and choice,” said Wilkinson.
“The collaborative approach we have fostered
between our clinical team and family members is
delivering remarkable outcomes and enhancing the
daily life of both our residents and our team.”
Generus was also a finalist in the newly founded
RVA Sustainability awards under the APL Best
Operator Led Sustainability Initiative category with
their Bay of Plenty pilot project at Pacific Coast and
Pacific Lakes Villages. Generus has led an extensive
sustainability pilot in the Pacific Coast and Pacific Lakes
Villages, achieving outstanding results and attracting
nationwide interest since the pilot’s commencement.
Following the successful roll out of the pilot, the
Generus sustainability programme has now been
adopted in all villages within the Generus Living
HONOURED: Harley Roach with daughter Myiah and coaching the mixed team of 11-year-olds.
Hawks league player to captain World Cup team
• By Gary Foster
SHIRLEY HAWKS rugby
league player Harley Roach has
been selected to captain the
Kiwi PDRL World Cup team to
compete in the United Kingdom
in November.
The World Cup in Warrington
will be held in conjunction with
the men’s and women’s World
Cups.
The Physical Disability Rugby
League team was selected from
PDRL players from throughout
New Zealand.
Harley plays for the Shirley
Hawks presidents team in the
Saturday competition.
He also plays for the Shirley
Hawks masters team. His club involvement
also extends to coaching
a Shirley Hawks 11-year-olds
team. It includes his daughter,
Myiah along with four other girls
in the mixed gender team.
Harley’s selection is a great
honour for him, his whanau
and the Shirley Hawks Club are
exceptionally proud of him.
Harley has only one arm but
this has not stopped him participating
in full contact games
with distinction, in his favourite
sport. He welcomes any player to
join him at the Hawks, especially
if you have not played before or
have a disability.
Said Harley: “Shirley is a fully
inclusive club and if I was not
playing for the Hawks, I would
not have advanced to be a World
Cup Kiwi.”
South Island players usually
have limited exposure for Kiwi
selection. To have Harley represent
Canterbury and the whole
of the South Island is absolutely
fantastic his Hawks coach Jimmy
Young said.
The club is hoping Harley brings
the PDRL World Cup home to
Shirley as a Christmas gift.
•Anyone interested in
joining the Hawks for 2023, can
phone Jimmy Young on 021 420
937 or the junior club captain
Andre Posthuma on 027 303
7088. Players are welcome for all
grades and abilities. For 2023 the
club is focusing on entering a full
girls team in the 12/13/14 year
age, to complement the work
Harley has achieved with his
mixed 11-year-olds team.
A winning combination for early spring
This slow-cooked, silky
aubergine-chorizo
casserole and a bright,
zesty blood orange
dessert are both
made for double
helpings, writes Nigel
Slater
Slow-cooked aubergine
and chorizo
This is a good-natured dish
that will keep for a day or two.
You could also use it as the filling
for a savoury crumble, with a
crust of breadcrumbs or flour,
butter and crumbled feta. It is
a dish to take your time over,
letting the aubergine soften to
the point where you could cut it
with a spoon.
Serves 4
Ingredients
2 Tbsp olive oil
250g cooking chorizo
1 red onion
150g soft, dried prunes
500g aubergine
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
500ml chicken stock
Directions
Warm the olive oil in a deep
saucepan, break the chorizo into
short pieces and add them to the
oil. Let the chorizo cook for 3
or 4 minutes until its torn edges
start to turn golden. Peel and
roughly chop the onion, add to
the pan and continue cooking
until the onion is soft and translucent.
Stir in the prunes.
Set the oven at 180degC. Halve
the aubergine lengthways, cut
into thick slices and then into
small cubes. Add to the pan and
continue cooking until soft and
tender. Stir in the cumin and
coriander and let it cook for a
minute or so, then pour in the
chicken stock, add salt and black
a lid. Bake in the preheated oven
for 45minutes until all is meltingly
soft.
Finely grate the orange zest,
chop the herbs, then mix them
together. Scatter over the stew as
you ladle it into bowls.
Blood orange and lemon
cake
I often cook this cake in early
spring, usually in a traditional
loaf tin, a cut-and-come-again to
take us through the week. This
time I made a shallow version
to offer as dessert. The cake will
cook quite quickly in a shallow,
square tin. Keep an eye on its
progress, testing it after 20 minutes.
It will keep well, too, in a
To
finish:
grated zest of 1 orange
10 mint leaves
a handful of coriander leaves pepper and cover the dish with cake tin or lidded plastic box.
Serves 12
Ingredients
225g soft butter
225g golden caster sugar
grated zest of 1 orange
grated zest of 1 lemon
110g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
115g ground almonds
3 large eggs
For the syrup:
100g granulated or caster sugar
1 lemon
1 blood orange
To serve:
200ml cream
IN BETWEEN:
For those
who like to
cook with the
seasons, ‘late
winter, early
spring’ seems
to last forever,
says Nigel
Slater. This
combination
allows for both.
PHOTO: GETTY
You will need a square cake tin
20-22cm in diameter, lined with
baking parchment.
Directions
Set the oven at 180degC. Put
the butter and sugar into the
bowl of a food mixer and beat
until soft. Finely grate the orange
and lemon zest. Sift the flour and
baking powder, then stir in the
ground almonds.
Break the eggs into a bowl
and beat with a fork. Add to the
butter and sugar a little at time
with the beater at moderate
speed. Should the mixture
curdle, add a little flour. Add
the remaining flour, almonds
and baking powder. Transfer
the mixture to the lined tin,
smoothing the surface as you go.
Bake in the preheated oven for
20-25 minutes.
To make the syrup: Squeeze
the lemon and the orange into a
small saucepan, add the sugar,
then bring to the boil. Let it cook
for a couple of minutes until
lightly syrupy, then remove from
the heat. Using a metal skewer,
pierce about 20 holes in the
surface of the cake, then spoon
the citrus syrup over. Leave the
cake to cool then cut into 12
pieces.
In a cold bowl, whip the
cream until it sits in soft folds,
then place a spoonful on each
cake. Remove the peel from the
blood orange and separate the
segments. Place one on each slice.
It is with deep sadness we acknowledge the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who died
peacefully at Balmoral on the afternoon of 8th September 2022. For many of us it
is the end of an era and the end of her majesty’s 70 year reign. In 1990 the Queen
visited Waitangi and acknowledged the problems of the past and the damaging legacy
of the colonisation of Aotearoa and the negative impact on Māori. Queen Elizabeth
affirmed that te Tiriti o Waitangi had been “imperfectly observed.”
Our thoughts are with the British royal whānau and the House of Windsor at this
sad time.
I was privileged to speak at the
NZEALS international educational
leadership conference at the
University of Waikato last week.
I shared with conference delegates
Haeata’s commitment to Kaupapa
Māori principles of leadership and
ako/teaching and learning.
A highlight for me was hearing Keynote addresses
by Mere Berryman, Russell Bishop and Anne Milne
and then visiting Hobbiton for the conference dinner.
Hobbiton is a place I would love to take our ākonga
to as part of our Year 8 Camp project in 2023.
A huge congratulations to the Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua
Society national committee for their organisation
of the national competition which has now returned after four long years. The
committee were committed to holding a national event this year after the disruptions
of COVID-19 lockdowns to ensure the 2022 ākonga Year 12 cohort did not miss
out on performing at the national competition in their secondary school years.
The competition is being held over two days across five different regions and Haeata
Community Campus has the privilege of hosting her in Ōtautahi. We wish these
talented rangitahi well for the competition.
Kaimahi/staff and ākonga/students
welcomed members of the Education
Review Office evaluation team to kura
last week. It was exciting to be able to
share the journey our kura has been on
since their last visit in 2019.
Kōmanawa Hapori
For the past four weeks, ākonga from Takirau and Ohua in
Kōmanawa have been taking part in Have A Go afternoons
with St James students, run by ACTIS. This has involved
being split into groups and then spending an afternoon playing
either badminton, football, ripper rugby or cricket.
These sessions are run by members of local sports groups
like Canterbury football and are built around fun sessions
designed to introduce skills and related games particular to
these sports. The ākonga love these sessions, although some
sports are more popular than others (until they get to try
them), and many groaned loudly today when they realised
the cooler weather had seen today’s sessions being cancelled.
Not only are these sessions enjoyable but great learning
experiences, so many of our tamariki are natural sports
people!
Haeata Community Campus hosts
Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival
area rehearsal
As one of the participating
schools, Haeata Community
Campus had the privilege to
host one of the area rehearsals
of Christchurch Schools’
Music Festival. The festival is
organised by the Christchurch
School Music Festival
Association Inc (CSMFA), a
charity registered with the
Department of Internal Affairs.
The CSMFA is made up of all
schools involved in the current
Music Festival.
On each night of the Festival, a different Massed Choir of about 700 voices made up
from some of the schools involved, performs a selection of songs with the support of
the Junior and Senior Representative Choirs, the Concert Band and/or the Symphony
Orchestra.
The whole rationale of the Christchurch Schools’ Music festival is based on the
involvement of choirs from schools in Christchurch, its environs and from the
West Coast.
The event will take place from 1 to 4 November in the
Christchurch Town Hall.
Haeata Community Campus presents
“This is me” Performing Arts Production
“This is me!” is an inspiring and
uplifting production, giving voice to
the hopes, dreams, potential, rights
and individuality of our modern day
youth, brought to you by the Haeata
Community Campus Performing Arts
department. The ākonga involved
are representing year 6 – 13 and
the event is a celebration of dance,
singing and various forms of acting.
The show will run for two evenings,
27 and 28 September, with the first
show being a dinner theatre event in
collaboration with the hospitality team
and the second a seated show.
74A MONCKS SPUR ROAD | REDCLIFFS
7 FRANCIS JAMES LANE | THE POWER OF ONE
SOLD AT AUCTION | $1,500,000
We have all heard the analogy, it only takes one. In the real estate world, unfortunately only one Family
can buy a HOME. 7 Francis James Lane in Redcliffs was the prime example. With a successful campaign
meeting 40 buyers through the open home and 28,853 online impressions, we managed to have one cash
unconditional buyer in a position to purchase the HOME at auction.
What do you do when there is only one bidder? Some people might think it is a disadvantage only having
one bidder for their property, in the buyers eyes they are thinking 'why am I the only person wanting to
buy this HOME?'. In this situation, your HOME specialist has to be creative and transparent. Having an
open conversation with your only bidder is very important, also we need to talk to our conditional
interested parties because the money at auction isn't always the best option for owners.
When we conduct our auctions with one bidder, we brief the one party that they are the only person that
we will be talking to through the auction process and create a strategy that allows us to pause the
auction and enter into a private negotiation with the bidder and the vendor. In the case of 7 Francis
James Lane, we had that transparent conversation and the bidding kicked off at $1,200,000, when there
were no other parties there to participate in the bidding, a bid on behalf of the vendor was placed by
the auctioneer at $1,250,000 and offered back to the highest bidder at $1,300,000. Once the bid was
accepted we announced if there was no further bidding we would pause the auction and enter into a
private negotiation with our highest bidder. After 40 Minutes of negotiations and life-changing
conversations, the vendor and purchaser agreed on the final sale price of $1,500,000, and the HOME
was withdrawn and SOLD.
Through this process, we managed to achieve the highest possible price the market was willing to pay
for 7 Francis James Lane which left our owners ecstatic.
