Rangi Ruru’s new multi-purpose 

centre opens 

RANGI RURU Girls’ School’s 

new sport and multi-purpose 

centre, Atawhai, is scheduled to 

officially open today. 

The $10 million project 

includes a state-of-the-art 

sports court which can 

be transformed into an 

events space, a fitness centre 

and learning spaces. 

It took 18-months to 

complete and has been 

brought to life thanks to 

donations from the school 

community. 

Said principal Dr Sandra 

Hastie: “The new build replaces 

a gym built in 1976 when the 

school roll was around 480 

students. With student numbers 

now at a maximum of 700, the 

new gym will not only be a 

transformational space for students 

to learn and play sport but 

will allow the school and wider 

community to come together for 

assemblies, conferences, events 

and performances.”

As well as the sports court 

with mezzanine seating that can 

transform into an event space, 

Atawhai also houses the 

PE, health and sport 

department staff offices, 

learning spaces, a fitness 

centre, changing rooms 

and gallery foyer space. 

The curved design, by 

Melbourne-based McIldowie 

Partners, speaks 

to the school’s name 

which means “wide sky 

shelter”. 

The design represents the night 

sky and features a statement 

façade that mimics solar 

constellations and is lit in blue at 

night. 

About 50 per cent of the build 

was contributed from fundraised 

capital. The fundraising effort was 

assisted by a generous bequest 

from an alumna, the late Elizabeth 

Reid, after whom the gymnasium 

in the building is named.

Seniors embark on bear-making mission 

NGAIO MARSH Retirement 

Village residents have been 

knitting up a storm with a Yuri 

Bear-making mission. 

The Ryman Healthcare Yuri 

Bear project aims to make 20,000 

knitted teddy bears for some of 

the millions of children displaced 

in the Ukraine since the country 

was invaded by Russia. 

The project is a labour of love 

for Debra Richardson, Ryman’s 

Victorian sales and community 

relations manager, whose former 

foster son Yuri remains in 

Ukraine. Debra and her family 

fostered Yuri in Melbourne following 

the Chernobyl nuclear 

disaster in the 1980s. 

A group of Ngaio Marsh residents 

have been meeting in the 

village centre for as long as most 

remember. Give them a task or 

challenge, they say, and the team 

will come through. Together 

village residents and staff have 

knitted about 160 teddy bears.

Skinner and Wendy Walker are 

members of the knitting group, 

which meets regularly, and have 

taken up the Yuri Bear challenge. 

The group of dedicated 

ladies are also making woollen 

‘comfort’ blankets for those 

in need in eastern European 

countries, including the poorer 

parts of Moldova, Bulgaria, and 

Romania. The blankets are then 

supplied to the charity Operation 

Cover Up. 

Booties and small woollen 

beanies are also part of the 

production line, with Margaret 

Strangman, and Marjorie 

Treblicock, specialising in these. 

These lovingly made items 

are sent to the Christchurch 

Women’s Hospital neonatal unit. 

Lois says she has knitted 

about 30 of the Yuri bears, 

having been a bit house-bound 

during Covid-19. There were 

probably more than 30 residents 

throughout Ngaio Marsh village 

who had knitted a Yuri Bear, 

with many having produced 10 

or more. 

Every resident at Ryman’s 

45 villages and the company’s 

offices in Melbourne and 

Christchurch were challenged to 

contribute a bear. 

Debra said the project was a 

tangible way Ryman residents, 

team members and the wider 

community could make a small 

difference to the lives of the 

youngest members of the wartorn 

country. 

Erin Wilson says she has 

concentrated on the stitching 

faces onto the Yuri Bears. “It’s 

not hard. I’ve done quite a few of 

them. It’s just like darning,” she 

says. 

“I made the silly mistake of 

saying: ‘Well if you don’t want

to do the faces, I’ll do them’. 

And they all arrived at our craft 

group.” 

All members of the knitting 

group agree they feel better 

for doing something towards 

those impacted by the war in 

Ukraine. 

Valerie and the ladies say 

they would welcome any 

donations of wool to Ngaio 

Marsh Retirement Village for 

their projects.

we are today. Bit of a blur really. Every step in the process has gone into 

achieving the result today that exceeded our expectations. The detail and

New pavilion has a familiar look

NESTLED IN the corner of 

Elmwood Park, many cricket 

fans may recognise the Old Boys’ 

Collegian Cricket Club’s iconic 

pavilion design from elsewhere 

in the city. 

The pavilion at the park shares 

the same white, plastic roof 

structure as Hagley Oval’s and is 

set to open next weekend, ahead 

of the 2022/23 cricket season for 

the South Island’s largest cricket 

club.

year” following the Christchurch 

earthquakes. 

Wakefield joined the club’s 

committee soon after and began 

the process of getting Elmwood 

Park a modern cricket pavilion. 

Funding the pavilion began 

after persuading his now late 

father Jim Wakefield, who gave 

the club money to start the build. 

The pavilion has since been 

named after him. 

Wakefield calls the design a 

“modest echo” of Hagley Oval’s 

roof design of five peaks. 

“We decided to do a similar 

one for Elmwood Park, just with 

a single peak.” 

Trevor Watt, of Athfield Architects, 

worked on both Hagley 

and Elmwood’s cricket pavilions 

and says the design creates the 

“desired village green concept.” 

He says “there is a modern 

international tradition, which 

originated at Lord’s Cricket 

Ground, for this building typology 

to reflect cricket.”

the traditional cricket whites 

against a green outfield.”

OBC premier women’s player 

Abby Gerken says the new pavilion 

is a “brilliant asset” to the 

club. 

The 20-year-old has played for 

the club since she was 11 and has 

only ever known the old Portacom 

buildings at Elmwood Park. 

She says, “without the pavilion, 

there were a lot of issues 

regarding social activities so 

hopefully, the new facilities are 

able to bring all the teams closer 

together and build that club 

environment even more.” 

“I honestly think that Elmwood 

Park is like a little Hagley 

Oval… not a bad thing to associate 

with club cricket.” 

With approximately 500 junior 

players at the club, the new pavilion 

is exciting for young players 

who haven’t known undamaged 

clubrooms. 

Eight-year-old OBC player Ollie 

Turner has played for the club 

for three years, and thinks the 

new pavilion is good for the club, 

saying the old changing rooms 

were “really small.” 

He enjoys going down to 

games at Hagley Oval in the 

summer and says the design 

of his club’s pavilion is “pretty 

cool.”

Wakefield says the club has 

been “really pleased” with feedback 

on the design. 

“A lot of people have said to 

me, just driving down Heaton St, 

it looks so iconic in the corner of 

the park.” 

He says that it’s like a “revitalisation” 

to have the pavilion 

finished before the 100th club 

anniversary in 2024 as well.

present representative players of 

the club available for photos and 

signatures.

Buses ‘woefully lacking’

combat social isolation.

30-minutes on weekdays and 

an hour on weekends to go to 

The Palms. 

“Restoring the Orbiter bus 

service through Dallington 

would help decrease the 

level of social isolation,” said 

Collins. 

He sent a letter to the 

Waitai Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board last 

week to raise awareness 

about the challenges facing 

residents. 

Said Collins: “There is 

not so much things to do

With limited options for 

recreational activities, he 

said a group of young people 

had turned to vandalism and 

graffiti. 

Many stores have had 

their windows smashed or 

scratched, Collins said. 

The community craft shop 

on McBratneys Rd has also 

had multiple failed break-in 

attempts. 

Said Collins: “We’re lucky 

that we have a great graffiti 

team that will quickly come 

out and help with repainting 

the wall.” 

The team, which started 

out in 2008, is part of a city 

council initiative to reduce 

graffiti. However, the clean up 

team does not cover scratched 

or broken glass. To bring the 

community together, the trust 

has held many events over 

the past few years, including 

Christmas hunts and street 

barbecues. 

About 75 children 

participated in its Christmas 

event last year. 

The trustees also fund 

events that are not covered by 

grants. 

“It’s been getting difficult 

due to the reduction in 

funding. But we’re not the 

only organisation (which) 

suffers from that,” Collins 

said. 

He said the other main 

reason for the letter was to 

thank the community board 

for its support and funding of 

the craft store.

has not responded to 

questions from the Nor’West 

News as to whether Orbiter 

bus services through 

Dallington will be restored in 

the future.

Hawks league player to captain World Cup team

SHIRLEY HAWKS rugby 

league player Harley Roach has 

been selected to captain the 

Kiwi PDRL World Cup team to 

compete in the United Kingdom 

in November. 

The World Cup in Warrington 

will be held in conjunction with 

the men’s and women’s World 

Cups. 

The Physical Disability Rugby 

League team was selected from 

PDRL players from throughout 

New Zealand. 

Harley plays for the Shirley 

Hawks presidents team in the 

Saturday competition. 

He also plays for the Shirley 

Hawks masters team. His club involvement 

also extends to coaching 

a Shirley Hawks 11-year-olds 

team. It includes his daughter, 

Myiah along with four other girls 

in the mixed gender team. 

Harley’s selection is a great 

honour for him, his whanau 

and the Shirley Hawks Club are 

exceptionally proud of him. 

Harley has only one arm but 

this has not stopped him participating 

in full contact games 

with distinction, in his favourite 

sport. He welcomes any player to 

join him at the Hawks, especially 

if you have not played before or 

have a disability. 

Said Harley: “Shirley is a fully 

inclusive club and if I was not 

playing for the Hawks, I would 

not have advanced to be a World 

Cup Kiwi.” 

South Island players usually 

have limited exposure for Kiwi 

selection. To have Harley represent 

Canterbury and the whole 

of the South Island is absolutely 

fantastic his Hawks coach Jimmy 

Young said. 

The club is hoping Harley brings 

the PDRL World Cup home to 

Shirley as a Christmas gift.

Event to lure women and girls into sailing 

THE PLEASANT Point Yacht 

Club in the South New Brighton 

Park will hold a sailing event on 

the weekend of October 1 and 

2 expressly for women and girls 

interested in getting into sailing. 

The weekend is called Wahine 

on the Water and is part of World 

Sailing’s ‘Steering the Course – 

Women’s Sailing Festival 2022’, 

which aims to attract and retain 

more women and girls to the 

sport, including all ages and levels 

of sailing ability. 

Pleasant Point Yacht Club’s 

initiative in holding this 

event has the full backing and 

encouragement of the national 

body, Yachting New Zealand. 

The activities on both days are 

scheduled to coincide with high 

tide in the estuary. 

The interest in this event is 

such that the Saturday “have 

a go day” between 8am-1pm, 

is unfortunately already fully 

subscribed. However, girls and 

women who have never sailed 

before are welcome to attend 

and find out more about sailing 

from the club’s committee and 

spectators are most welcome to 

attend. 

Participants will learn how to 

rig a dinghy, how to read the wind 

directions and how to sail in a 

small boat either on their own or 

with another person. 

Depending on the weather, the 

club’s recently acquired Sigrid 

trailer yacht sail trainer will be 

out sailing with a female crew, 

under the supervision of an 

experienced club member. On 

Sunday, the programme runs 

from 9.30am-1pm and includes 

a women’s cup regatta involving 

three short races between 

10.30am and noon and sailors 

will be on site rigging their boats 

from around 9.30am. Sailing in 

the Sunday event is open to any 

woman or girl registered with a 

Yachting NZ affiliated club. 

The race courses will be close 

to shore so spectators will get a 

great view from the shore from 

the expansive decks in front of the 

clubhouse. Refreshments will be 

available at the club. 

The racing will be followed 

the presentation of the Margaret 

Kennett Trophy and prize-giving. 

Access to the South New 

Brighton Park is off Beatty St, 

the club is at the end of the park’s 

access road. 

The club has over 20 women 

and girls actively sailing on a 

regular basis and two of the club’s 

committee are women.

8 Dos and Don’ts for a Well- 

Functioning Walk In Pantry 

1. Do consider what you’ll be 

using the pantry for 

A walk in pantry can take various forms 

and perform different functions, so make 

sure yours delivers exactly what you 

need it to. At the planning stage, work 

out what you want to use the space for 

and any activities you plan to do there so 

you can work on the layout and inclusions 

accordingly. 

Ask yourself, will the space just be used 

for food storage or will you be prepping 

meals in there too? Do you need to 

include a sink? A second dishwasher? Do 

you have enough benchtop space and 

power points to leave appliances out 

so teenagers can make an after-school 

snack without messing up the kitchen? 

2. Do think about functionality 

Before you automatically 

allocate a task or function 

to your walk in pantry, 

consider whether it makes 

practical sense to do so. 

Some commonly used 

food items, such as oils and 

spices, are better located 

near the cooking zone in 

your kitchen. Do you really 

want to be preparing tea 

and coffee in the walk in 

pantry when you have 

guests over or would you 

prefer to do it in the kitchen? And while 

it’s great to wash (and hide) dirty dishes 

at a sink in the pantry, how far would you 

then have to walk to put them away? 

On the other hand, large pots and serving 

platters might be better stored in the 

pantry if they are not used often. 

3. Do opt for adjustable shelves 

– but don’t go too wide 

Having several sets of narrow adjustable 

shelves makes it easy to store items of 

different heights and sizes in your pantry. 

It also allows you to easily sort items of 

different sizes into categories, such as 

baking goods, tins and snacks. 

But be aware that if shelves are too wide 

they can bow when filled to capacity. 

If you don’t like the look of holes in 

adjustable shelves, remember that most 

will be hidden when the shelves are filled. 

4. Do spend wisely on materials 

A walk in pantry should put practicality 

first and looks second. But that doesn’t 

mean the space has to be unsightly and 

utilitarian. 

Laminate benches and open shelves are 

hardwearing and practical, and won’t 

break the budget. They come in a vast 

range of colours and finishes so you 

should be able to find one that matches 

the colour of your kitchen materials in 

order to create a seamless look. 

You could also use laminate (or paint) in 

the walk in pantry to have a bit of fun with 

colour. 

5. Don’t forget the view from the 

kitchen 

Even if there is a door between the 

kitchen and walk in pantry, it will probably 

be left open a lot of the time, so the space 

will be in view of your kitchen. Because 

of this, you’ll want to find ways to 

prevent your walk in pantry from looking 

cluttered and untidy. 

While shallow open shelves make access 

easy and allow you to see what you’ve got 

at a glance, they can look messy from an 

open door. An easy and affordable way to 

make them look neat is to store items in 

matching containers on shelves. 

If you have the space, specify drawers 

and closed cabinets under benches 

where you can conceal pantry clutter. 

Just remember this may not work well in 

a small pantry, where open drawers and 

cupboard doors can create visual clutter. 

If you prefer, you could have closed 

cabinets near the door and open ones in 

out-of-sight parts of the pantry. 

When specifying drawers, bear in mind 

that styles with low fronts are easier to 

see inside. 

Tip: If you have room, allocate a small 

area in your walk in pantry to store a 

broom and a step ladder to access higher 

storage. 

6. Don’t forget the electrics 

Specify plenty of power points in your 

walk in pantry so you can leave small 

appliances plugged in and ready to go. 

And look to create a pleasant and 

practical lighting set-up. Most walk in 

pantries don’t have windows and just 

rely on a single ceiling light, which can be 

harsh and make it hard to see to the back 

of shelves. 

Create a more functional and visually 

appealing scheme by adding LED 

striplights under shelves. Install a dimmer 

switch so you can alter lighting levels to 

suit the mood and function. 

7. Do get your measurements 

right 

For overhead cupboards, a depth of 

between 350 and 400 millimetres is ideal 

as it creates generous storage while still 

being shallow enough to allow you to 

reach right to the back. 

Allow between 1,000 and 1,200 

millimetres of space between benchtops 

so you can move through the pantry 

comfortably or accommodate two people 

side-by-side in the space. 

Overly narrow benchtops won’t provide 

enough space to prep and store small 

appliances; too deep and they’ll be tricky 

to clean. Aim for a sweet spot of between 

600 and 700 millimetres for the depth of 

your benchtops. 

8. Don’t underestimate the 

importance of natural light 

Drawing sunlight into the pantry makes it 

feel bigger, brighter and more welcoming. 

I love to bring natural light into a walk in 

pantry through splashback windows or a 

skylight. Strategically positioned mirrors 

within your joinery can help bounce light 

around further.
