SHELTER
SCOTLAND

Our Shelter Scotland services,
policy advocacy, and campaign
teams come together to
create the best possible
outcomes for people in
housing need.
We do this by providing
practical support and advice to
people experiencing bad
housing or homelessness,
informing professionals, and by
campaigning for legislative
change.
HOME IS
EVERYTHING
Scotland’s housing system is broken and
biased. It can and must be fixed.
2022 marks 10 years since the Scottish
Parliament implemented the 2012
homelessness commitment. MSPs of all
parties promised that nobody who
becomes homeless could be denied a
permanent home. And yet at the start of
2022, that promise remains unfulfilled for
thousands of households.
Homelessness is rising, a record number
of children are trapped in temporary
accommodation, councils are struggling
to provide safe homes for people
experiencing homelessness and tenants
still wait too long (and pay too much) for a
secure affordable home.

RECOVERY
Aberdeen in Recovery is a charity that is open to all
individuals who have actually lived experience of
active addiction personally, as well as those who
have been affected by a loved ones behaviour
From our creation back in 2012 as a
steering group, we have continued to
grow.
We had our first event in October 2012,
where we had in a region of 130 people in
attendance, highlighting services in our
community, offering complementary
therapies, online recovery groups, and a
conversation cafe. Following the event, we
came to the understanding that with the
enthusiasm and interest generated we
required more events.
Barnardo's

We help children through the trauma of sexual abuse and
exploitation.
We provide support for young people in care – and we
don’t forget about them when they leave the care system.
We give children caring for a loved one the help and
support they deserve.
And that’s not all. Our specialist workers support families
through domestic abuse, mental health problems, prison
sentences, asylum seeking, and much more.
We also amplify the voices of young people to influence
the Government on the issues that affect their lives,
fighting their corner and making sure their voices are
heard.
The scale of what we do may be big and complex, but our
aim is simple – to provide the best outcome for every
child, no matter who they are or what they have been
through.
Scottish Welfare Fund
Apply to the Scottish Welfare Fund
The Scottish Welfare Fund provides financial support if you are facing a
crisis or need help to live in the community. This is normally in the form of a
one-off grant to help with living costs. The fund does not cover ongoing
expenses.

You do not need to pay the money back.

Crisis grants - to help meet immediate needs after an emergency or
disaster. For example you can apply for things like food, heating costs,
nappies, toiletries and travel.
Community care grants - to help people to settle in a new home, when
moving from an "unsettled way of life" (for example hospital, prison or a
homeless accommodation unit). They can also support families who are
facing exceptional pressure. For example you can apply for things like
furniture or carpets.
We award grants based on your situation. We only receive a limited
amount of money from the Government each year, so we can only provide
small grants. We normally cannot give you more than 3 grants in any 12
month period unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Who can apply for a grant
You can apply for a grant if you:
are over 16 years old
have a low income or do not have access to your money
You can apply for a community care grant if you have savings of less than
£700 (£1200 if you're over the age for pension credit).
