ABOUT THE <strong>SLA</strong><br />

The <strong>SLA</strong> was set up in 1937 to support all those who work in school libraries. We currently have over<br />

2400 members, and are <strong>the</strong> first port of call for even more people who work in school libraries, whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

that’s through our training, publications or advice line.<br />

We believe that every pupil is entitled to effective school library provision and <strong>the</strong> educational, emotional<br />

and developmental benefits that come with it. The <strong>SLA</strong> is committed to supporting, promoting and<br />

sustaining high quality reading and teaching and learning opportunities for all in a diverse and changing<br />

world.<br />

WHAT WE OFFER MEMBERS<br />

The School Librarian - A quarterly journal full of best practice for primary and secondary that enables<br />

educationalists to stay up to date with <strong>the</strong> latest in children’s publishing and maximise <strong>the</strong>ir budget.<br />

Advice line - Email or call to ask about any issues, best practice or guidance and get realistic,<br />

personalised advice.<br />

A mentoring service for anyone with responsibility for running <strong>the</strong> library.<br />

Exclusive member only online resources and guidance - Access via our website as and when you need<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, covering everything from promoting reading for pleasure, library design, recruitment and more.<br />

Member only events such as <strong>the</strong> ‘Meet <strong>the</strong> Creator’, an online author/illustrator event.<br />

Special groups for particular interests, including ‘Leading School Libraries’ and ‘Primary’.<br />

Training<br />

Online courses – Work through at your own pace and time.<br />

Weekend course – A 3 day event that takes place each year and is a highlight of <strong>the</strong> year for many.<br />

Webinars - A selection are available each week, including one a month which is free to members.<br />

Regional training – Our one day courses are currently suspended, but will be back as soon as possible.<br />

Publications – Whe<strong>the</strong>r you're new or experienced, <strong>the</strong>se cover a range of topics and across all school<br />

stages and are lively, practical and easily readable.<br />

Regional branches - Bringing training to you and ensuring a local support network.<br />

Competitions, giveaways and discounts - Great deals from publishers and o<strong>the</strong>r organisations such as<br />

Softlink, Peters, DLT magazines and The Literary Gift Company. Plus, discounts on all <strong>SLA</strong> publications<br />

and training.<br />

CPD Library subscription option - Allows members to borrow CPD texts and access a Certificate of<br />

CPD Engagement to focus, record and recognise your ongoing CPD for a small, additional fee.<br />

Support various campaigns, such as <strong>the</strong> Great School Libraries campaign, a collaboration between<br />

CILIP, CILIP's SLG and <strong>the</strong> <strong>SLA</strong> that aims to bring school libraries back to every school in <strong>the</strong> UK and<br />
