Welcome to the Tow Show issue of Professional Recovery Magazine.
Inside
This is the first issue of the magazine since
the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II, and I
must start by offering our sympathies to the
Royal family and giving thanks to her Majesty for a
lifetime of service.
This is the Tow Show issue and there’s a very
good chance you’re reading it at Telford. If so,
you’re in for a treat. Nick and the Tow Show team
have been hard at work, bringing you some of the
best products and services the industry has to
offer.
The Vintage Vehicles proved incredibly popular
in 2021 and a new collection of vehicles have
returned to Hall 3 this year. The Boniface daily
demonstration is ready to go, and we even have a
demonstration of model recovery trucks.
The Business Seminar, held on Tuesday always
provides talking points and discussion and we have
Towby’s Telford Social on Wednesday evening.
All this and over 60 exhibitors make a visit to the
Tow Show a must for all the recovery industry.

share Tow Show sneak preview
The Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR)
looks forward to meeting industry
colleagues and friends at the annual
Tow Show. In a three-way collaboration with
show sponsors Creative Funding Solutions
and RED (Recovery Equipment Direct),
visitors are encouraged to stop by the IVR

Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Protocol (free). This
year the IVR will be highlighting the need for
an evacuation plan when storing alternatively

However, a key focus on the IVR stand will
be the IVR’s 40th year celebrations.
As technical advisors to the industry,
the Institute of Vehicle Recovery has
striven to raise the professional skill levels
and competence of those who work in
rescue and recovery through training and
development.
The Institute takes this opportunity to

who have over the past 40 years supported
them in their quest to move the industry
forward to professional and safer roadside

CAN SEE...
Our lives and the news headlines were engrossed
in two subjects over the past two to three years,
Brexit and of course COVID but today grabbing
the headlines is the sad passing of our Queen
Elizabeth II, and the investiture of our new head
of state King Charles III.

With hours and hours of TV coverage showing the world
just how the formalities of such an historic event should
be done when it’s played out on the world stage. The
attention to detail and precision planning of every minute is quite
amazing. From the procession leaving Balmoral and traveling to
Edinburgh and the subsequent flight down to Northolt, the drive
along the A40 into London to her next resting place at Buckingham
Palace.
Then the procession that followed the coffin as it left
Buckingham Palace to the Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall. The
procession didn’t leave at 20 past 2, no it was precisely 2:22pm on
the button. The procession then marched at 70 paces per minute,
again so precise in the time to the second it arrived at Westminster
Hall, the rest is history.
I don’t know about you readers, but it’s that precise attention
to detail that catches my eye, and over the years of her Majesty’s
reign there have been some key moments in some of the Queen’s
speech’s. For me there is one specific line that seems to have hit
the repeat button on the BBC over the past week and it’s the one I
love, it went something like this. “My first Prime minister, Sir Winston
Churchill once said to me; the farther back you look the farther
forward you can see.”
Broken operating model
That resonates with me as it should with others, now apply that
to the recovery industry and the sad situation we face today and
the announcement from Green Flag last week, I’ll come back to that
later.
If you were to go back through the magazine over the past year
or two you will see regular references and an emphasis on the
generational changes the recovery industry is facing, as well as
the most common message, the recovery industry continues to
operate a broken operating model. Something that is definitely
compromising a lot of operators today, just ask Dave and Emma
Drew!
As we consider Sir Winston Churchill’s quote, I first want to focus

on the positive and all the good successful work the recovery
industry can be proud of. When you look back an industry that
had the foresight all those years ago to use its own professionals to
create a safer working environment, using the Institute of Vehicle
Recovery to create a library of training courses bespoke to the
recovery industry. As we look forward from that moment, those IVR
modules have now become the bedrock, the industry standard,
embedded into the highest of industry standards, the farther
forward you see, the safer our roadside workers are as they (the
IVR) continue to strive for increased roadside safety.
Look farther forward and what do you see?
If we look back at the way your average garage came by a
recovery vehicle, you will see those first recovery vehicles hand
built by just anybody, there were no standards. If it looked like it
could do the job then the good old recovery operator made it
work. If we now look forward, that same recovery operator will only
accept the very best, precision-built trucks, meeting the highest in
safety compliance and longevity.
Your control room technology and the communication with your
drivers and your work provider/clubs. Look back, a phone call, a
pen and paper, the radio communication, today we have instant
communications, vehicle tracking and nowhere to hide, look farther
forward and what do you see?
In the true light of day, some of these advances in technology
have hindered the recovery industry, think about it for a minute
“the farther back you look the farther forward you can see”, where
did we go wrong? Who is truly to blame for this industry teetering
on a knife edge? Lift any stone, rock, job number or detrimental
change the recovery industry has seen over the last 30 plus years
and what do you see? What colour trail has been left behind.
Take a look back and then look farther forward.
● A callout for a rescue job, a second callout if it went to
recovery but now just one callout, “Now is time to look
forward”.

l A pin in the map and base to base mileage, today just how
many free miles are you contracted to give? “Now is time to
look forward”.
l Specialist charges, correctly authorise them and no problem
they will be paid, today in most cases it’s an all-inclusive price,
“Now is time to look forward”.
l Police storage charges paid, average days charged 15, today
free storage average days charged 0, “Now is time to look
forward”.
l Police SOCO and vehicle examination facilities all chargeable,
today a free service, “Now is time to look forward”.
l A contract direct with your local area police force, no fee
charged, today fees paid per vehicle and generally a costly
agents fee, “Now is time to look forward”.
We all know the list of detrimental industry changes only reflects
some of today’s financial challenges. The list goes on and on, it’s an
abuse of a professional and essential service that directly assists
the three emergency services and other government agencies in
keeping the UK road network operating. No other essential service
would stand and be treated in this way.
Who is to blame?
But who is to blame, those who introduced these changes,
changes not made to progress the industry, but made only for
financially beneficial reasons, or is it those who accepted these
changes that are to blame. Those who accepted the changes will say
they had no choice and in some cases desperation, to retain some
financial turnover, another form of corporate bullying. I think we are
all to blame, those implementing the changes and those accepting
them! However, “Now is time to look forward”.
Earlier I mentioned Green Flag, those operators on their network
must once again feel let-down by them, considered by most as one
of the best and perhaps the premier work provider/club totally
dependent upon the independent network of recovery operators

and again they are upsetting that operator network.
If you have not heard, Green Flag are setting up their own
roadside operations and are putting a fleet of roadside patrols on
the road. What that means exactly - size, how many vans, how many
trucks, timescales, I don’t know but I’m sure we will all find out soon.
Let’s use the same principle, Sir Winston Churchill’s quote “the
farther back you look the farther forward you can see”. Why are
Green Flag taking this decision, well I’ve not discussed this with
them, but I’m sure there is an obvious answer. In recent times Green
Flag’s work has been insurance based, white labelling products for
other insurers. They have always wanted to add a manufacturer
to their portfolio. As much as they have tried, they have never
managed to succeed, probably safe to say not even come close to
winning, no, these contracts always go to the yellow or orange van
fleet.
The industry’s good friend
Green Flag started as a small breakdown club, in the early 1970’s.

The minds of two men Bob Slicer and Jeffery Pittock, they both
met in a pub in Bradford and decided to take on the AA and the
RAC using a network of garages and mechanics that would recover
and fix their member’s cars. Using a network of local mechanics,
this assured a swifter response to calls and attendance times and
greater customer satisfaction. The service was established and
shortly after, two men became three with Ernest Smith joining in
1971. National Breakdown Recovery Club (NBRC) as it was known
then went from strength to strength under the stewardship of
Ernest Smith, within three years it had over a 100,000-member
portfolio.
The mid 1970’s Brian Hagan joined, this expanded the massive
headcount to only six, it was under the industry’s good friend
Brian’s stewardship that the independent network grew, not only
in numbers, but also in the quality of operators and high operating
standards, National Breakdown expanded and developed to a UK
brand we all grew to know and respect. Renamed in 1994 to Green
Flag Rescue.
It didn’t work out for them
Jump forward to 2011, Brian Hagan now retired, heading up Green
Flag as Rescue Fulfilment manager is Gary Amos, tasked to reduce
the number of approved garages on the network from 283 down to
171 and eventually in 2012 down to only five.
Regularly referred to as the Big 5, Gary Amos and Green Flag
entered into a seven year contract with five large operators,
Ontime Rescue & Recovery, Kavanagh Group, Westbourne Motors,
Mansfield Group and Macadam Rescue. Right or wrong and many
know my views, the underpinning plan was to indirectly have their
own liveried roadside and recovery fleet. Feeding the five preferred
operators with enough volume so each could afford their own
exacting green liveried fleet. Huge volumes, I’m talking 265,000
jobs a year just for Ontime and that was not the largest of the five
contracts by volume, I’m sure they were hoping this would tick the
box for manufacturer tendering, I think it’s safe to say that didn’t
work out for them.
Today the number of independent operators on the Green
Flag Rescue network is back in three figures, each one must be
disappointed with the communication recently received, but why
have Green Flag made this bold move?
Many of those independent work providers including Green Flag
have over the last few months and years lost customers to those
yellow and orange clubs, I guess there is several reasons for this,
price being a big one, but just as big and important will be the ability
to compete on all fronts, and the strength of their own roadside
operation will be just as big a factor, if not the main reason.
Clearly Green Flag were not sitting on their laurels back in 1971
Ernest Smith, as National Breakdown’s Chairman, took on both the
AA and RAC, and now this fresh Green Flag team lead by Damon
Jowett is looking forward and once more, it looks to me as they
are about to take on both again. How long it will take to establish
their unique brand of professionals, who knows, but to gradually
introduce their own roadside and recovery fleet in the long term I
believe can only be good for the industry. Why, because It’s without
doubt time the industry stood up against these modern-day
influencers that drive the price down and, in some respects, lower
our industry’s high standards. It’s possibly short-term pain for the
network but for long-term gain. This is possibly the big shakeup the
whole industry needs.
It’s important the independent network supports this bold move
being made by Green Flag Rescue and to realise this can only be
for the good and in the long run serve to protect the future of the
recovery industry.

Year on year including past challenges of recession and most
recently the pandemic, we are proud that we have continued

Lands’ End to Scotland ! Needless to say, the meeting went well,
and several orders were placed.
But, interestingly, during the meeting he remarked to Richard
( MD) that we could double the size of the company. Richard’s
response, was as always; “we have no ambition on being the
biggest, we just consistently strive to be the best, not only when
it comes to the product itself but also the service back up we
provide.” Richard is steadfast in his ethos, “We always try to assist
our customers wherever we can. We believe in transparency
and never give fictitious delivery dates just to obtain an order. We
continue to develop our products to not only improve ease of use
but also to reduce whole life vehicle cost to the customer whilst
maintaining hight residual values.”
The VRS Evolution II is going from strength to strength and is well
represented and respected throughout Europe. After 15 years on
the open market, it certainly has a proven reputation.
We have received repeat export orders to Belgium and most
recently a large export order to Switzerland. The Swiss had
purchased a unit over a year ago and tested it alongside several
other designs. After a rigorous 12 months of extensive trials the
VRS Evolution II proved itself top of its class in all categories.
We are a loyal and close-knit team at J & J and take an active
interest in our Company’s goals, and pride in our Company’s
achievements.
We have an open-door policy here at J & J and welcome our

in Red House!

Red House Service Station in Derbyshire have
been a customer of J&J Conversions for many
years, often staying understated and modest
with one or two new vehicles purchased
each year as part of their fleet replacement
programme.
This year Red House Service Station are
celebrating their 60th anniversary. Tom
and his brother John are the thirdgeneration
owners of the family company
based just outside Chesterfield. Tom said, ‘We
wanted to celebrate our diamond anniversary
and pay homage to our past, ironically in sixty
years Red House have never previously had a
red recovery truck’. Their latest J&J Predator
Iveco slide bed has been customised in house
by Tom (between his day-to-day operations
and the arrival of his new baby!) with a full
vehicle wrap in a very eye-catching metallic
red complimented with the familiar Red House
chevrons and graphics. The cab features

been applied in a timeline from the very start of
the business to the modern day. This is sure to
turn heads whilst out on patrol around Derbyshire,
Nottingham and South Yorkshire.
Due to increased workload and fleet
replacement, this year Red House have taken
delivery of four new J&J Iveco slide beds with a
mixture of Predator and F1 Low approach bodies
all based on the Daily chassis and all fitted with
BHW Reel Smart winches. “It’s a product that just
works, and it works well! It’s made with an attention

celebrating 60 years

It was once a roadside filling station together with Jaguar
Triumph car showroom built around the house that was
covered in Virginia creeper which encouraged local people
to call it the Red House. Today the site has been totally
rebuilt and boasts a very modern filling station, a busy shop,
repair workshop and the headquarters of a successful
recovery company.
It all began in October 1962 when Bob Bootyman and his wife
Ellen bought a small roadside filling station and car showroom, at
Heath, just outside Chesterfield. The recovery business began
as a support service for the car sales and grew organically and then
expanded externally by delivering services for the police and national
motoring organisations. The rate of growth was greatly accelerated
when the M1 motorway was built in 1967 and the reputation of the Red
House Service Station ensured they received significant work in the
area.
Tragedy struck in 1979 when Bob, aged 55, suddenly passed away
unexpectedly. At which point his son Robert, who was already a
partner, found himself having to quickly get to grips with running the
business. Margaret, his future wife, who was working in high class
catering at the time, gave up her profession to help run the business
with Robert. Starting from the bottom serving fuel, driving trucks etc
and on becoming a partner she eventually took on a more officebased
role, running the control room, doing the accounts and wages

etc, whilst Robert continued to do roadside repairs, something
he still enjoys to this day. They continued to expand the
business in the 1980s and 90s and although they had originally
recovered heavy vehicles with a fleet including a Scammell
Crusader, Diamond T and a Bedford RL, they decided to focus
on light vehicles and continue the growth in that direction.
Today, their two sons John aged 37 and Tom aged 35 are
now running the company. After being brought up around the
business they were encouraged to continue their education
at college and university which they did. They became
partners in 2012 and now head up what has become one of
the busiest independent, family-owned fuel retailers in the
country. The responsibilities for the day-to-day operations are
shared between the brothers, with Tom overseeing the fleet
and operational roles and John managing the control room,
accounts and fuel station. These roles fit extremely well with
their natural talents.
Now in the safe hands of the third generation the business is
growing by taking the best philosophies of the past and combining
them with modern imperatives to continue moving the company
forward. The business was built on the basis that ‘The Customer is
King’ and has a right to a quality service, delivered by professionals.
This has continued through to the present day and is a key element
of the overall business ethos.
Roadside breakdown work generally is within a 20-mile radius of
its base and Red House will recover to anywhere in the country.
Most of the 35-strong mixed fleet are Ivecos, along with DAF LFs,
Mercedes-Benz Ategos and Mitsubishi Canters. Aluminium slide
beds are favoured for their recovery transporter vehicles because
of the high payload and are generally fitted with BHW ReelSmart
winches due to their adaptability and reliability. More Ivecos from
J&J Conversions are currently on order and due for delivery later

this year. This will ensure the
whole fleet is compatible with
the Low Emission Zones and the
emerging clean air zones.
The family all have their own
interests outside the recovery
industry. Robert has a keen
interest in classic vehicles,
Margaret breeds and show’s
prize-winning Shetland ponies.
John is an avid skier and has a
passion for all things technology,
he also enjoys traveling
throughout North America.
Tom, who is a new father, has
a passion for general aviation,
having gained his pilot’s license
and has built several light aircraft,
he also travels to air shows
around the world as part of a
formation aerobatic display team.
So, while they’re all committed
recovery people, they have
gained the best of both worlds
by achieving a balance with their
leisure activities.

for Burke
Bros
It was back in 2013 that Sam Burke of Burke Bros Recovery
collected his first ever T35 transporter from the Boniface factory
in Thetford, Norfolk. Like many operators over the years, Sam
soon realized that the T35 was an excellent addition to his fleet. It is
an extremely tough, durable and versatile truck that can be driven
by anyone with a car license and be used not only to move everyday
cars and motorcycles that have broken down but also damaged
vehicles.
At just 3.5t GVW, the T35 is not speed restricted meaning that
jobs can be attended quickly and unlike larger vehicles, it does not
require a tachograph – even when moving road worthy vehicles or
other goods. Being a small vehicle the T35 is also very fuel efficient

Green Flag - we
can’t blame them!
As PROF has
established itself as
the premier recovery
industry platform, the
responsibility that now
goes along with that
title is becoming more
apparent each day.
There is a very appropriate saying that sums up
PROF’s progress: “BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU
WISH FOR IT - MAY COME TRUE”.
Post PROFCon 22, I’ve had numerous meetings
with PROF’s partners and stakeholders, all of them
with the appropriate people at the appropriate
levels.
When Green Flag asked for meeting with me, I
naturally thought it was to do with Automania and
our fantastic service levels.
However, although indirectly the meeting did
concern Automania it was called for by Green
Flag to speak to PROF regarding their future plans,
which are now subsequently public and I thank
them for their honesty.
I listened intently to the inevitably of what
was being said, and I must admit my mind kept
wandering from to how it could and would affect
Automania!
Although the consequences of Green Flags
announcement will in the short term have a
massive impact on many of us, I’m afraid it has to
said, the recovery industry have forced Green Flag
into making a purely commercial decision based
purely on the economics they are being beaten by,
predominantly the AA.
Some time ago in this very magazine, I warned of
the damage the AA, business model would do to
this industry, and that if we kept supporting them
the damage would soon become irreparable. YES,
IT WAS ME UNDER THAT PAPER BAG!
Well, here we are, and I am afraid as much as

Let’s be frank, this is our doing,
and while it’s all too easy to blame
the ‘Clubs’ and ‘the rates’ I blame
the people that continue even
now to work for the AA.
Green Flags decision is going to affect my business, I can’t say I blame
them for taking a logical business decision, and if I’m honest, I have to
commend them for taking the decision to take the AA on at their own
game. Because we can’t! And we didn’t want to when we could have.
The independent network has never had the appetite to say no to the
AA.
In the last 18 months LV, Green Flag, and Call Assist have all lost
major contracts to the AA. These work providers/companies, have
been the life blood of the recovery industry, they all supported the
industry through COVID.
Yet many VRO’s have continued to subsidise the AA with their
willingness to work for them, and without the mix of breakdown
work we enjoy from our other work providers and for about a 20%
Less margin. How can our other work providers compete with those
margins.
The truth is the independent VRO cannot continue to exist on
those margins, and COVID has accelerated the inevitability of what is
happening now.
Green Flag have seen the writing on the wall, they must have a
sustainable network model that can support their memberships while
remaining profitable whilst doing so.
The long term flip side to this situation is I believe Green Flag can
and will beat the AA, and as long as they don’t become the AA, there
is a lot of work to be won back by them and our other work providers,
that can be returned into our businesses at a profitable rate.
Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but let’s be frank, this is our doing,
and while it’s all too easy to blame the ‘Clubs’ and ‘the rates’ I blame
the people that continue even now to work for the AA.
This is all my personal opinion, not as President of PROF but as the
MD of Automania Group Ltd.
PROF will continue to work with Green Flag as a valued stakeholder
and hopefully our platform can work together with them to try and
make the whole business model somehow more sustainable for us all
in the future.
As far as Automania is concerned, I’ve got some even harder
decisions to make myself.
I can’t tell other VRO’s how to run their business, and I can’t blame
them for mine.
But I won’t be blaming Green Flag either, and nor can you!

Keep safe, keep smart, keep
promoting your business
You turn up on site in the
small hours. The driver of
the vehicle you’ve gone
to recover is stressed, tired,
hungry and cold. He wants you
to sort out his problem and
you do because that’s your job.

It’s time for
reflection
As another year has passed and another Tow Show is upon us, hopefully many
operators will come to the show and not only meet those involved with the
work supply but, more importantly, there will be a chance for them to meet
their fellow operators. It will not take them long to realise that the same
problems and challenges still exist that existed one, two or even more years
ago.

It is amazing really how the industry has become more like ‘upstairs downstairs’
with work providers and a further group of people on one level and the hundreds
of operators left at the lower level. It’s still about the upper level trying to work out
how to make as much money as possible whilst using the lower level as work drones.
The biggest leech of all, of course, is the third party handling people; people who run
some Police contracts and, of course, National Highways. But, then again, the club work
providers are also an intermediary for, in many cases, the insurance companies. It’s
incredible how they even believe that they can keep the rate of remuneration so low
without having the system collapse but, sadly, we are at the lower level having never been
any good at standing up for ourselves.
People who keep claiming to improve things, as long as I can remember, have done
absolutely nothing. Their first port of call is usually to try and introduce more regulation,
then have a few meetings and tell each other how good they all are. How Peter Crosby

operators is just amazing. Perhaps that was more of a time when men
were men and sheep were nervous and everybody just pushed on
regardless.
If we revisit the use of red lights there have been numerous
attempts and even now if I am not mistaken they are being studied
and trialed. Just how much study is necessary to see if a red light
works is beyond me. Regarding red light use, I would have thought
with the advent of the current range of LED amber lights and their
amazing efficiency, the need for red lights probably means that the
horse has bolted on that one. Meanwhile we are still required for
the next five years to work on smart motorways as their usability and
safety is studied and accessed. I ask you, how’s that for kicking the can
down the road, perhaps Liz Truss will be as good as her word.
How much longer?
With inflation at over 10% and the cost of running a breakdown
truck ‘out the roof’, how much longer can operators function on the
current rate of remuneration. Before I go any further, I need to isolate
LV=Britannia Rescue from the rest of the work providers as they have
always been ahead with regard to payment and, given a free hand,
they would put the rates up to where we all want them but, of course,
in a free market they are still restricted by the greed of everyone else.
Britannia Rescue’s new rate of £80 for a call out at night is somewhere
near where we should be but, sadly, not many Britannia members
drive about at night so the process is a bit self-defeating. If it were,
say, the AA or RAC, with all their night-time culture members, it would
make a significant difference. The delay in introducing new statutory
rates is deplorable when we consider that they are already in place in
Scotland. There is no excuse for them not to be rolled out elsewhere.
I would suspect that the insurance companies are responsible for
some of the delays as they have always been anti Police contractors.
Going back to the PROF Conference, I was surprised that the NPCC
Representative believed that Police contracts across the county are
working well when we know that many are not. Perhaps he meant
police contracts are working well from the police point of view but
that’s not the contractors. AVRO is probably a better barometer for
these sort of things. The Durham scheme is in complete disarray
with contractors outside the County having to travel 30/40 miles to
recover cars, because only two contractors within Durham County are
doing jobs. The rest have found it uneconomical and, for one reason
or another, have given up and nobody else will take it on. It’s just a
matter of time before there are a raft of complaints from people
having to travel long distances to collect their cars or property, then
again is this the new normal? It is great that a scheme in London with
40,000 jobs is working well but in many places there are very few jobs
and many don’t make any money, not to mention the police tender
document that is floating about with its unreal demands on potential
operators.
Operators giving up
As we roll on to another year, I would suspect that the model of
industry that I was brought up with is progressively changing from
loads of operators going too jobs within a 30 minutes eta and either
getting them going or recovering them home is a thing of the past.
Now we have a mixture of a few small and a selection of larger
operators covering vast areas with eta’s of one to three hours being
commonplace. It’s a changing world were rapid response is four or
five longer than it used to be take the police or an ambulance so why
should we be any different.
It is sad to see a lot of operators giving up but it’s probably just
the way the whole thing is evolving. The same as city centre shops
have had to give way to out-of-town supermarkets. Sooner or later
operators will have to be paid enough money to function, otherwise,
big or small, they won’t be doing what we call ‘club work’ anymore.
And finding someone who helps all the operators instead of helping
themselves is as far away as ever, and in the meanwhile have a great
show.

AVROUPDATE
PREMISES:
l All premises must be commercial premises, suitable for the
operation of a roadside recovery operation. The members trading
name and contact number will be clearly displayed on the outside
of the premises in a prominent position. Where local regulations do
not permit the use of signage, written confirmation of this will be
required.
l If applicable to the operator’s business, the operator’s premises will
include a Reception Area, Waiting Area or similar which will be in a
clean and presentable condition, along with access to a clean toilet
area, the availability of a telephone, and facilities to offer hot and
cold drinks.
l If applicable to the operator’s business, the operator will have
secure storage facilities (either internal or external) for a minimum
of two vehicles or such facilities suitable to the operation of the
business. All storage areas are to be of hard standing construction
and in compliance with environmental regulations.
VEHICLES:
l The members trading name and contact number will be clearly
displayed on the outside of the vehicle in a prominent position.
Roadside and recovery vehicles utilised in specialist or sensitive
circumstances, requiring to be inconspicuous, will be exempt from
the above
l All roadside and recovery vehicles MUST have in place
Manufacturers Certificate of Conformity or a Proof Load Certificate
and MUST comply with current legislative LOLER and PUWER
regulations with relevant certification.
l In Republic of Ireland all roadside and recovery vehicles will comply
with the Safety & Health at Work (General Applications) Regulations
2007 with relevant certification.
l All roadside and recovery vehicle cabs and passengers’ areas must
be clean, presentable and free from tools, equipment and other
articles which contaminate such areas or cause injury in the event
of a collision.
l All roadside and recovery vehicles will have the correct level of
Road Excise Duty in place and will have a valid MOT Certificate and
DVSA Plating Certificate as required by Law
EQUIPMENT:
l All items of equipment (including winch ropes, spec-lifts, under
lifts, over lifts, lorry mounted cranes, slide bed bodies) must have
a Proof Load Certificate or Certificate of Conformity clearly
displaying the relevant proof load and safe working load where
applicable. In addition to this, all items must comply with LOLER and
PUWER regulations. All items will display upon them the relevant
safe working load (SWL) or will lift load (WLL) in a prominent position
evident to the operator.
l All roadside and recovery vehicle operational equipment controls
will be clearly marked for the correct mode of operation. In respect
of lorry loader cranes, in addition to the above, the safe working
load (SWL) and capability radius must be displayed.
l All supplementary and additional items of equipment (including
shackles, lifting chains, strops, lifting strops, winching strops etc)
must have a Proof Load Certificate or Certificate of Conformity
clearly displaying the relevant proof load and safe working load
where applicable. In addition to this, all items must comply with
LOLER and PUWER regulations. All items will display upon them the
relevant safe working load (SWL) or will lift load (WLL) in a prominent
position evident to the operator
l All equipment will undergo regular maintenance and be maintained
in a safe, operational condition and free from defects.

new ‘Eco’ conscious
clothing range
RED were recently very fortunate to spend
a day with the welcoming team at Bakers
Recovery based in Oakely near Basingstoke.
Bakers have trialled
the newly launched
eco conscious range of clothing
from the popular Swedish manufacturer
Fristads. The range is ground-breaking as it
is the first work wear range to incorporate a
high proportion of material formulated from
recycled plastic bottles and other bio-based
materials. The range also closely monitors
and minimises water usage which is often
very high in garment manufacture negatively
impacting the environmental. The use of
organic cotton in addition to these measures
gives these garments real “green” credentials
so RED have been keen to get them into
trial to see if they would be suitable for our

sector. Justine discussed the trial with Ian Baker who was also
very enthusiastic about the idea and happy to test them for
a few weeks to see how the garments would stand up to the
rigours of Bakers Recovery team’s use and abuse!
Bakers Recovery was established in 1970 by brothers David
and Kenneth Baker, primarily to recovery their own haulage and
coal trucks, as their family ran established businesses in haulage
and solid fuel distribution, which continues to this day. The
recovery business started just in time for the opening of the
M3 motorway, with the brothers attending its first accident and
covering it ever since. David and Kenneth both remain active
in the business, with David’s sons Ian and Russell are also now
part of the management team running the busy site which has
includes garage repair workshops, MOT and servicing as well as
SOCO facilities.
On the recovery side of the business they have a core
customer base with a broad mix of work covering casualty vehicles
of all sizes. Running a fleet of 10 recovery trucks, plus vans, their light
fleet consist of slide-beds built by J&J Conversions and SLA’s from
Roger Dyson. For the heavier recoveries they have an impressive
MAN Mk6 H Boom maxi-reach under lift with pioneer axle, built by
Boniface Engineering.
Bakers are a very impressive operator who clearly value their
professional team of over twenty staff, from the team in the office
and workshop technicians to the recovery operators out working at
the roadside. Covering Basingstoke, Andover, the M3, A34 and A303
trunk roads they work on behalf of Berkshire Police and National
Highways as well as a number of roadside assistance clubs and
motoring organisations.
Ian Baker contacted RED at the start of the summer, as he was
keen to update his recovery team’s range of work wear. Bakers
have always been happy with the quality of the Fristads products

and were really interested to hear that they had launched an “Eco”
range. With more emphasis from work providers for contractors to
demonstrate sustainability in their operation, there was no better
time to consider the environmental impact of uniform.
Bakers recovery team tested the garments for a month before
feeding back to RED that they were really comfortable to wear,
and lighter weight than the original Fristads high visibility
garments – which was just as well, as when RED visited them
to take photos of the team for this launch, it was in the
midst of the heatwave at 38 degrees !! They tested out
the work wear trousers and jackets, there are also stretch
versions available and bib and brace overalls all made
from either recycled or bio-based materials.
Ian told RED, “The trousers are definitely much
lighter in the heat. We have been searching for some
time for trousers with a much lower gsm (Weight)
as in the hot weather we still have to be roadside
compliant for the Highways and Police contracts,
but also ensure our team are appropriately
dressed for the conditions. Roadside safety is our
priority and company image is also very important
so finding these trouser in the same style as
our existing uniform ticked all the boxes. I was
particularly pleased with the shorter leg – they
fitted just right and the elastic section in the
waist made them super comfortable. With the
testing so far, it looks like they wash well too which
is important. Cheaper items we have bought in
the past have faded quickly and the reflective has
come off. These items look equally as robust as
the higher gsm products we have bought from you
before.”

Boniface Engineering are back for another year
of impressive demonstrations, ranging from
some of the smallest products in the range
all the way up to some very imposing and powerful
models. With help from their skilled demonstration
team, led by Nick Ovenden the team will showcase
another year of Boniface innovation and engineering
and what that means for the recovery industry
With electric vehicles becoming more popular,
the increased weight along with new risks, the
demonstrations will show various ways to move
electrified vehicles using a selection of Boniface

going up against challenges much larger than their size

a number of larger scenarios including two rollovers -

accident unit with damage free lifting frame.

on a tanker. The casualty will then be towed away

AA hydrogen fuel cell petrol
vehicle to showcase next step
in breakdown vehicle evolution
Having taken a lead in the conversion
to electric vehicles the AA exhibits a
new first with its hydrogen fuel cell
roadside breakdown vehicle.
The AA Hyundai NEXO shows how
Patrol vehicles will evolve to assist
the AA’s 13 million members in the
future.
The AA takes its next radical step
in the evolution of roadside rescue
vehicles by showcasing a hydrogen fuel
cell breakdown vehicle at this month’s
Tow Show.
Its appearance at the Telford event
has major significance. The West
Midlands has been chosen for the
AA’s trial of this cutting-edge engine
technology.
Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)
use a propulsion system like that of
electric vehicles, where energy stored
as hydrogen is converted to electricity
by the fuel cell. Unlike conventional
internal combustion engine vehicles,
these vehicles produce no harmful
tailpipe emissions. The only emissions
are water.
Team AA has designed the NEXO to
be an operational roadside breakdown
vehicle. It will carry most of the tools,
equipment, and spares that you would
find on the rest of their yellow Patrol
fleet.
It will be targeted at breakdown jobs
in ultra-low emission areas that require
fixes rather than tows. The vehicle will
begin its operational service in the
Midlands area working in and around
Birmingham’s clean air zone (CAZ).
The SUV-type vehicle has a fuel cell
system that combines oxygen and
hydrogen to create a flow of electrons
that powers the electric drive motor
and charges the 1.56kWh high voltage
battery.

discussions about carbon reduction and zeroemission
vehicles have tended to concentrate on
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). At the AA we are
investing in electric vehicles but believe that there
will be a role for hydrogen and possible synthetic
fuels in the future. Hence, we want Patrols to pilot
this hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to see what lessons
we can learn. We are aware hydrogen might be
used for the bigger tow trucks in the future.
“The AA Hyundai NEXO could be a perfect fit
for Patrol work in ultra-low emission zones so
are looking forward to putting it to work. We
accept that the hydrogen refuelling
infrastructure is not currently
extensive, but the 414-mile range
makes the vehicle viable for our
needs.
“As part of our ESG strategy
we believe that driving doesn’t
have to cost the earth and
we’re committed to reducing
our impact and supporting
drivers to do the same. To
achieve this the AA has recently
announced its commitment
to become Net Zero for our own
Emissions by 2035, including our
greenhouse gas emissions generated by
our operational fleet which are the AA’s most
significant source of direct emissions.
“This is an ambitious target, as there isn’t yet
a van in production that can run on alternative
fuel and meet all our needs. But we’re trialling

Manchetts
Paul Montgomery for Manchetts takes part in East Coast
Truckers convoy in children’s day out.
About 100 lorries formed a convoy to take disabled or
disadvantaged children on a bank holiday day out trip from
Norwich in Norfolk to make the 26-mile trip to the
Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park in Lowestoft, Suffolk. It’s the
35th time the East Coast Truckers charity has run the event, which
gives children the chance to ride in the lorry cabs.
Manchetts driver operator Paul Montgomery supports the
charity in his own time was keen to take part in the event, and
Sean Manchett was pleased to donate funds and proud to supply
the truck. Paul drove Manchetts Scania R520 V8 which we call the
Grandad truck as it is airbrushed with the business founder George
Manchett and sons Peter and Ray Manchett all now since passed.
Paul said that a special dispensation was given from the police to
allow the children’s carers to travel in the vehicles with them.
The Organiser Trevor Howlett said he was relieved the event was
back this year, “We’ve been away two years, if the pandemic had
stopped us this year, it would have been very hard to start it up
again,” he said. “It shows how good it is to get 92 trucks for the
first year back, we can have up to 100.”
The convoy returned to County Hall in Norwich via the seafront
at Great Yarmouth where more people lined the route to see the
spectacle.

Midhurst Engineering
Midhurst Engineering started a breakdown service (not recovery)
in the 1930s, working for the AA and RAC, using a Buick tourer with
a homemade crane in the back. Then by the early 1960s we had
progressed to an ex Ambulance Austin with a Harvey Frost crane in
the back, in addition to a Morris pick up.
At this time we had only one man on call out of hours. From this
time until 1988 we converted ex WD (War Department) vehicles
(Austin K9s, a Bedford RL and a Ford A series) as breakdown vehicles.
In 1988 we purchased a second hand Ford Cargo fitted with a new
crew cab and slide back from Brimec in Bristol. During the 80s and
90s we purchased a number of used vehicles from other operators.
Things moved up a gear from 2001 as we commissioned new
vehicles to our specification to be built gradually building the fleet up
as the workload grew to be a more significant part of the business.
Today we are running five roadside vans, a rapid response motorbike,
two trailers (one covered), an off road Landrover, backed by a Unimog
& a Foden. On the lorry side there are eight flatbeds including 2 x 16
ton twin decks with specs, an American F450 snatcher spec lift (and
when required dolly wheels) & finally the accident unit equipped with
a 19 ton metre lorry loader crane.

Owl Motors
It was early winter when Owl Motor Services Ltd of Portsmouth were
called out to a gentleman in a tuxedo, on the way to his golf club in
his Mercedes, he had tried to cross Pigeon House Lane Ford. It was
flooded at the time to a depth of 3 feet, as the measure at the side
of the picture shows, but he thought his air suspension would get him
through!
The picture shows his car still floating in the water when our truck
arrived shortly afterwards. He explained that he had to climb out the
sunroof as all the electrics had stopped working and he could not
open the door - just as well because the vehicle would have sunk into
the mud. He was only worried about the damage to his clothing and
losing his golf clubs in the boot.
Our driver bravely wadded into the freezing water and then had
to dive under the back of the car to get it hooked up to the truck
winch and tow it out. The Mercedes was declared a write-off and was
still dripping water when it was taken away by his insurance company
several days later.

number 8328) contains a selection of fully insulated tools
to suit the needs of any mechanic working on hybrid and
electric vehicles, or by electricians.
The hand tools are suitable for live working up to 1000V AC /
1500V DC and include insulated combination pliers (35mm jaw
opening) and insulated side cutters (19mm jaw opening) both
with two colour VDE insulated handles with slip guards. Insulated
screwdrivers are included: Ph2 x 100mm long, flat 5.5mm x 125mm
long; 5x insulated open ended spanners: 8, 10, 12, 14, 17mm.
For spannering, an insulated 3/8”D ratchet (72 teeth); 9x 3/8”D
insulated sockets: 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19 and 22mm; length 71mm,
together with a 100mm extension bar providing greater access.
Also in the set, an insulated cable knife ideal for stripping standard
